m4 travel

The M4 is a motorway in the United Kingdom that connects London and South West England. It runs from London to South Wales and it is a crucial part of the English transport network.

The M4 was first proposed in 1927 and construction began in 1958. It was completed in 1971, running from London to Reading, Berkshire and later extending to South Wales.

The M4 is one of the major roads in the UK and a significant part of the economy. The M4 has been upgraded in certain sections and currently consists of 146 miles (235 km) of motorway.

The M4 is one of the safest motorways in the UK. According to the Department of Transport (DfT), the M4 had a collision rate of just 0.41 per million vehicle kilometres between 2017-2018. This is lower than the UK major-road average of 0.71.

Live m4 traffic news and updates for m4 junctions, plus real time travel reports on delays, accidents, roadworks and snow.

Diesel motorway pollution smog traffic

The M4 is the main road running between London and South Wales, passing via Slough, Reading, Swindon, Bristol, Newport, Cardiff and Swansea along the way. Much like the rest of the UK’s road network, the M4 has its areas most likely to cause tail backs – primarily where it joins the M25 on the west of London and also where it meets the M5 near Bristol. Naturally, accidents, roadworks and other traffic issues cause delays, so it pays to be on top of your journey before you start your engine.

There used to be a toll road charge to cross the M4 Severn bridge that joins England and Wales, but after 52 years, the charge was scrapped on December 17th 2018.

Best sat-nav apps

Generally the majority of the M4 tends to stay relatively clear, but the 189-mile route can see extra congestion during rush hour and summer holidays. If you’re planning to use any section of the M4 motorway, this page will be a useful aid for travel alerts, live updates and an incident map for both westbound and eastbound lanes.

The history of the M4

The Ministry of Transport first proposed a new road from London to South Wales in the 1930s. Plans for the M4 as one of the first major post-war trunk roads were produced in 1956 and construction began in 1961. The Chiswick flyover, a short section of elevated dual-carriageway built to reduce the impact of traffic travelling between central London and the west, opened in 1959 and later became part of the new M4 route. The section from J18 to the west of Newport was opened in 1966, including the Severn Bridge, which is now part of the M48.

The English section of the motorway was completed in December 1971 when the 50-mile stretch between Maidenhead and Swindon was opened for public use. The Welsh section was finished in 1993, when the Briton Ferry bridge opened. The Second Severn Crossing opened in 1996, and motorways on either side of the river carried the M4 over the new crossing when construction was finally completed.

HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M4

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M4 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

We have been told by National Highways that the camera feeds for the M4 in England will be reinstated shortly. Please check back.

If the images are not updating, please check back later.

Man critical condition after crashing into guard rail, with traffic on Sydney’s M4 brought to a halt

A serious crash brought traffic to a halt on a busy Sydney motorway.

Emergency services were called to a crash on the M4 Motorway at the Prospect Highway Off-Ramp in Sydney about 8am on Monday, with two of the three westbound lanes closed according to Live Traffic NSW.

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson confirmed paramedics and a rescue helicopter were called to the scene, with a NSW Police spokesperson confirming a motorcyclist had crashed into a guard rail.

A 27-year-old man was treated by paramedics on the scene and is being transported to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the crash, and a nyone with information or dashcam footage is urged to call police.

Traffic was built-up for about an hour while emergency services cleared the road. It has since reopened.

The traffic chaos comes as a spate of light rail strikes are planned across Sydney this week, with the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) poised to carry out two-hour stoppages between 8am and 10am, and 4pm and 6pm Monday to Friday.

The action comes after failed negotiations between the RTBU and operator Transdev, with RTBU secretary David Babineau claiming staff were meant to receive a pay rise schedule from Transdev, but “what (they’ve) been given is worse off than the previous offer”.

“Workers are just after the pay and conditions they deserve. It’s disappointing the company has forced us back to taking protected industrial action and impacting commuters,” he said.

“We have tried to limit the inconvenience to those peak times to ensure people can get safely to where they need to outside of those hours, for example late at night.

“It’s clear these huge companies aren’t feeling the cost-of-living pinch like our workers are, otherwise they wouldn’t be dragging out this bargaining period.”

A Transdev spokesperson thanked customers for their patience as they work to resolve their new Enterprise Agreement.

“We are working hard with transport partners to minimise impact to customers caused by this industrial action,” the spokesperson said.

“Customers should plan ahead and consider alternate transport options during the disruption period or, if possible, avoid non-essential travel on the trams.

“We will have as many personnel as possible on the ground to help manage the disruptions. Testing activities for Parramatta Light Rail will continue.”

Best times to avoid M5 and M4 this weekend ahead of mega getaway

Motorists are being warned ahead of an estimated 27 million car journeys expected to occur over the upcoming weekend, with the M5 and M4 predicted to be among the most congested routes. Data from the RAC and transport analytics experts INRIX suggests that holidaymakers will embark on 2.4 million getaway car journeys on the first Friday after schools break up for summer, with traffic steadily increasing towards the weekend.

Between Monday, July 22 and Thursday, July 25, it's projected that 13m getaway trips will be undertaken before the usual rush commences over the first weekend of the summer holidays. On Friday, July 26, dubbed 'Frantic Friday' by the RAC, it's anticipated that a total of 3.2m journeys will be made as holidaymakers and daily commuters share the roads.

However, traffic congestion is forecasted to reach its peak on Saturday, July 27, with a total of 3.6m journeys predicted, followed by an additional 2.9m trips on Sunday. The RAC also forecasts that an extra four million getaways will occur between Friday and Sunday, resulting in a potential total of 13.8m trips over the course of the weekend.

  • Cyclist dies of serious crash injuries
  • Dramatic A38 rush hour crane fire caught on camera

Historical data suggests that these three days could potentially be the second-busiest getaway weekend since 2015, only outdone in 2022 when 18.8m took to their vehicles following a series of Covid-related lockdowns.

Motorists are being advised to steer clear of the roads during peak times this weekend, with specific warnings for Friday and Saturday between 12pm and 5pm, and Sunday from 11am to 1pm. The M5 southbound is expected to be particularly congested from junction 15 near Bristol to junction 23 for Bridgwater, as travellers make their way towards Devon and Cornwall, reports Bristol Live .

RAC Breakdown's spokesperson Alice Simpson cautioned: "Anyone heading off on holiday on Saturday or Sunday should expect a weekend of woe on the roads with journeys taking far longer than normal. If you can't set off really early, then it's highly likely you'll be sitting in traffic for quite some time."

A total of 27.1million leisure journeys will be made by car between Friday and Sunday, with the RAC urging drivers to avoid travelling during peak times to avoid congestion

Delays ease on M4 Motorway near Prospect after serious motorcycle crash

Motorists on the M4 Motorway were warned to brace for delays after a serious motorcycle crash sparked traffic chaos on Monday morning.

WATCH: Sprinkler incident in M5 tunnel

Don't miss out on the headlines from NSW. Followed categories will be added to My News.

Traffic waded through water in the M5 tunnel on Monday morning in Sydney’s southwest after a car caught on fire on the motorway.

Commuters faced delays as emergency services were called to the M5 near Bexley Rd shortly after 7.20am following reports of a car fire in the tunnel.

Smoke detectors in the tunnel set off the sprinklers before traffic could be blocked from the tunnel, with vehicles wading throug huge puddles of water.

Firefighters arrived to find a car fully engulfed in flames, with crews extinguishing the fire shortly after their arrival.

The M5 citybound was closed for about an hour and diversions were in place.

As of 8.30am, the tunnel reopened and traffic conditions returned to normal.

At its peak traffic conditions were heavy with congestion banked back 7km to Riverwood.

In a separate incident, a man is fighting for life in hospital after a serious motorcycle crash on the M4 Motorway on Monday morning.

Paramedics were called to the M4 at Prospect near the Cumberland Highway Exit Ramp and Prospect Highway Off-Ramp just after 8am following reports of a multi-vehicle crash.

Officers were told a motorcyclist crashed into a guard rail and other vehicles.

The crash forced the closure of the M4 Motorway in the westbound direction for about 45 minutes.

The rider, a man aged 27, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.

The highway reopened but traffic conditions remained heavy until about 12pm, with queues banked back 10km to Parramatta for most of the morning.

Motorists were advised to use the Great Western Highway instead.

As of 1pm, emergency services cleared the wreckage from the scene and traffic returned to normal flow.

The RAC predicts a steady flow of traffic starting today – Tuesday July 23 -ahead of what is known as ‘Frantic Friday’ on July 26. That Friday alone is expected to see around 3,200,000 trips.

But some roads are set to be busier than others. And the RAC has helpfully revealed which spots could turn into traffic mayhem – and when to avoid them.

Where summer traffic hotspots are expected

UK roads are set to see staggered delays starting today – Tuesday, July 23.

Here are the hotspots where traffic is expected to be the worst over the weekend.

A grey map showing part of the UK where the busiest traffic hotspots are going to be according to RAC.

Traffic into major UK airports and holiday destinations will start building from Thursday, July 25 onwards, transport expert Inrix has warned.

It said drivers could be hit with delays of more than half an hour between the Chiswell Interchange near St Albans southbound to Gatwick Airport, and the A303 eastbound between Ilminster and Andover – the main route to London and the Southampton and Portsmouth ports and ferries to the Isle of Wight.

But it’s said the worst is still to come.

A monster queue of over two hours is set to develop on Saturday lunchtime on the M5 heading south between J15 (M4 and M5 interchange near Bristol) and J23 for Bridgwater as holidaymakers head to Devon and Cornwall, Inrix said.

The weekend is likely to be the second busiest summer getaway weekend since 2015, the RAC said.

Data graph showing the number of getaway trips between 2015 and 2024 based on RAC data.

Only 2022 saw more trips following two summers of Covid lockdowns – 18,800,000 were made between Friday, July 22 and Sunday, July 24 that year.

To make matters worse for stationary traffic, Frantic Friday could see temperatures reach mid-20s in parts of southern England and London, the Met Office forecast predicts.

Saturday, July 27 will be the busiest of all days with 3,600,000 trips by car, followed by another 2,900,000 trips on Sunday, according to RAC data.

There could be as many as 13,800,000 trips made over the ‘weekend of woe.’

When to avoid travelling on UK roads

Inrix told drivers to avoid travelling between 12pm and 5pm both Friday and Saturday.

On Sunday, July 28, the worst congestion is expected 11am and 1pm.

Your best chance of avoiding the worst getaway traffic is if you hit the road after 6pm on Friday and Saturday, or 3pm on Sunday, according to Inrix.

Saturday will see the worst hold-ups. Delays on A-roads and motorways are expected to take third longer than usual.

Problems with your car could land you waiting for recovery on the side of a busy motorway, risk an accident or being pulled over.

RAC said one-in-ten motorists decide to drive to a holiday destination knowing there is a problem with their car such as a warning light, mechanical issue, fluid leak or poor tread on a tyre.

RAC Breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson said this figure was a ‘truly frightening statistic’ and equivalent of more than 2,700,000 drivers ‘at the wheel of a faulty vehicle this week.’

She said: ‘Anyone heading off on holiday on Saturday or Sunday should expect a weekend of woe on the roads with journeys taking far longer than normal.

If you’re heading out on a journey this weekend, make sure your #TRIP is a safe one. Always remember to Top up, Rest, Inspect and Prepare. Don’t forget to pack some essentials before you set off. ‘If you can’t set off really early, then it’s highly likely you’ll be sitting in traffic for quite some time.

‘Our research suggests this year’s getaway is set to be busier than average, possibly due to the UK inflation rate having slowed, giving people a bit more confidence to spend.

Traffic on UK roads on 'weekend of woe'

RAC said drivers will make around 27,000,000 leisure trips during the great summer getaway.

Here is the breakdown of trips.

Tuesday, July 23 – 2,400,000 journeys

Wednesday, July 24 – 2,600,000 journeys

Thursday, July 25 – 2,500,000 trips

Friday, July 26 – 3,200,000 trips

Saturday, July 27 – 3,600,000 journeys

Sunday, July 28 – 2,900,000 trips

‘However, with our recent bad weather causing an increase in international travel bookings, queues to major airports should not be underestimated. We’d advise drivers to plan their routes well in advance if jetting off abroad this week.’

RAC urged motorists to book their car for a check-up before setting off for a holiday as vehicle TLC outweighs ‘the expense of a nasty repair and precious lost holiday time.’

Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said that drivers should expect ‘long queues’ on major roads.

Being flexible with your route – whether that’s a longer journey in miles or the time you leave – could ‘reduce the stress of being held up and make for a more enjoyable trip,’ he added.
