Kelong Acheh Fishing Resort

Kelong Acheh is a Fishing Resort built on stilts, located between Pulau Acheh and Pantai Penyabong near Mersing, Johore. It is a popular resort for visitors from Malaysia and Singapore. If you are coming from Kuala Lumpur, the drive will take you about 6 hours.

You can park your vehicle at the parking lot near the jetty when you arrive at Pantai Penyabong. A boat will ferry you out to the resort.

We normally plan our journey so that we reach Kelong Acheh around 12 pm. On arrival, lunch is normally waiting to be served. The best package to take would be the 3 days 2 nights stay. If possible, plan your stay for weekdays. Weekends are normally packed with holiday makers looking to fish their biggest catch. Even if you are not into fishing, just lazing around enjoying the cool breeze and the 5 meals that are prepared each day would be more than satisfying.

About the place

The rooms are dormitory style and can accommodate 12 pax. If you go in a group of about 7 pax or more, and the palace is not too crowded, they will let your group have the whole dorm to yourselves. There are a number of common bathrooms and toilets located around the resort.

Electricity is available from 7pm to 7 am each day. The sea breeze keeps the place cool so fans or air conditioners are not necessary during the day.  You can charge your phones and other devices at night.

Food is served for breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner and supper. Lunch and dinner will consist of fresh seafood with rice, vegetables and probably eggs. Our last trip there, they had biscuits as well as hot and cold drinks available through the night for those doing night fishing.

The fishing is not too great and also depends on the time of year. There are a number of lucky fishermen hauling up big fish weighing more than 50Kg. Even if you do not catch the record fish you were looking forward to, the feeling of being with nature is satisfaction enough. On our last trip, we were fortunate enough to see a pod of dolphins. One even jumped up about 20 meters away from us. Unfortunately, we did not have our cameras on hand.

In the daytime, you can see lots of bait fish very near the kelong. These are caught to use as bait for the bigger fish.  You may also see barracudas swimming around the stilts. Another common sight is to see Ikan Bawal Mas (Golden Pomfret) swimming past. These fish do not swim in an upright position. Instead, you find them swimming on their side. At night you may see Sotong (squid) darting around in the water where the light shines on it. These squid are not that easy to catch.

What do you need to bring?

Almost all that you need will be provided. There is lots to eat, you can buy beer , soft drinks and snacks from the kitchen. The bedding materials include mattresses, blankets and pillows. There is a fan and lights in each dorm. Basically what you need to bring are your toiletries, chargers, bait and fishing equipment, medicines, an ice box and other personal items.

When are meals served?

That’s the best part about your stay here. There is someone who goes around alerting everyone that the meals are being served. You may be engrossed in your fishing or other activity and suddenly you hear that the next meal is ready. The food is fresh and tastes good.

Is it safe at Kelong Acheh?

Kelong Acheh is situated in-between Pulau Acheh and the mainland, so it is shielded from the worst effects from stormy seas. It is even safe during the North-East monsoon which occurs at the end till the beginning of the year. The only effect you will see other than the daily rain is that the water is brownish. This is due to the mud that is being washed by the rivers from the hills into the sea. But the structure of the place is secure with regular strengthening works carried out during the year.

How do I book a boat to ferry me back to shore?

Just inform the manager or staff of your intention to leave a day before and he will make the arrangements. If you have booked a fixed package, no notification is needed and a boat will be waiting at checkout.

This place is one of my favourite nature spots. Just watching the waves and listening to the sound from the sea is very calming. You can fish to clear your mind of the daily tensions and problems. The management and staff are very friendly and informative. All these makes us want to come back over and over again.

kelong trip malaysia

Kukup Fishing Village , or Kukup Laut , is a fishing community in the Pontian district of Johor .

This quaint village is built on stilts above the muddy mangrove shoreline and has been in existence for more than 100 years.

Together with the neighbouring area called Air Masin , the settlement is home to a population of 1400 people, nearly all Chinese, and mostly engaged in fishing and catering for tourists.

At weekends and holidays, the population is boosted by hordes of tourists from other parts of Malaysia and from nearby Singapore who come to savour the fresh seafood, stay in one of the holiday chalets and soak up the relaxed seaside atmosphere.

If you have been to Crab Island (Pulau Ketam) near Klang and you enjoyed it then you will probably like Kukup too.

You can walk around the village on the wooden or concrete boardwalks built on stilts above the mud and water. The villagers have everything they need such as schools, temples, shops and restaurants.

Those restaurants near the international ferry terminal are the biggest and busiest, serving a full variety of seafood dishes at reasonable prices. There are also shops here selling dried fish products like keropok and belacan .

There are scores of floating fish farms in the channel between Kukup Laut and Pulau Kukup . Visitors can take a boat tour to visit these fish farms, or kelong s, and take a closer look at the various species of sea creatures being cultivated here. The kelong boat tour costs RM10.

Pulau Kukup is a protected uninhabited nature reserve covered in dense mangrove forest. It is possible to visit and there is a boardwalk with view towers .

How to Get To Kukup Fishing Village

The location is marked on the map on my Top Johor Attractions page.

Unlike Crab Island, you do not need to take a ferry to get there as it is located on the mainland of Peninsular Malaysia.

There is no parking in the heart of the village but as you approach the outskirts you will see some large secured car parks where you can leave your vehicle for a few Ringgit per day. Some of these car parks have a free shuttle service to bring you from the car park to the town centre in front of the ferry terminal.

The ferry terminal by the way links Kukup to Tanjung Balai in the Riau province of Indonesia. The ferry runs hourly and takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes and tickets cost IDR130,000 one way plus Terminal fee of IDR30,000.

Kelong Fishing

Give a man a fish and he can eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he can eat for a life time, and what better place to fish than over the sunken wrecks of Malay fishing villages? Known as Kelongs, these stilt houses built over the water were decommissioned 5 years ago but that certainly hasn’t stopped their remains being the best fishing spots that we have!

Guests collect their fishing rods and bait from the dive base around 3pm, and buy any drinks they would like to take along to be kept in an ice cold chiller on the boat

Depart Sea Gypsy Beach, heading around the northwest point of the island and get driven to the GPS tagged Kelong wrecks.

Relax, enjoy the boat and the banter, and if you do happen to catch anything, we’ll cook it for you Sibu style and serve it for your dinner.

Sunset Fishing

Dan’s Nasty Frogmen use Sea Gypsy’s 32’ twin engined speed boats, with canopy for their fishing trips and what better time to run them but at sunset!

Departing Sea Gypsy at 5.30 p.m., we have several fishing spots that we like to visit close by, plenty of time to be settled to watch the sun set.

Anchoring up its time to get serious about the fishing, Dan's Nasty Frogmen will provide all of the equipment, bait and tuition, should it be required and hopefully you will be pulling in something big enough that we can give it to the kitchen to steam with ginger and spring onions and have it for our supper!

With a cold box full of drinks, this excursion is also fun for those just wishing to watch the sun set

Check the What’s On boards in our restaurant for details of the excursions planned for that day, or just come on over to the dive base and have a chat about what you would like to do during your stay at Sea Gypsy Village.

We will also take you up-close to Pulau Ubin (the only inhabited island out of Singapore’s 63 islands) and explore it from the sea. Along the way, discover how Sustainable Fish Farming works in Singapore and learn about its struggles. Topping off the intriguing boat tour would be a visit to a kelong restaurant, where you get to experience life on a floating fish farm.

Soak in the sun, let your hair down in the wind and just breathe in the salty sea air. It will be an unforgettable Singapore Boat Tour experience!
