She has earned different certifications to increase her knowledge in the travel industry. These include:

FUNOLOGIST from Carnival

Wow EXPERT from Royal Caribbean

Wedding Moons Specialist for Sandals

Sandals Certified Specialist

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA)

Jamaican Expert

She loves to sell cruises! Two of her favorites are Royal Caribbean and Holland America. She loves Royal Caribbean because it has excellent cuisine, and phenomenal entertainment, and the ships have the "wow" factor.  On the other hand, she loves Holland because it is known as the grandmother of the cruise lines.  Distinguished, regal and with a more tranquil environment which makes it a great choice for older adults not looking for the "wow" factor but instead the "grand" factor.  From her experience Holland cruises are relaxing, feeling closer to a Ritz Carlton experience while Royal Caribbean is just plain fast paced fun!

For land vacations she loves to sell Funjet Vacations and ALG RESORTS. With many of us having to look at the budget, these two companies are excellent for the value they offer. Don’t forget AMTRAK Vacations are a great option and she has experience with them as well. So whatever type of vacation you are looking for she will be the one to talk to! Travel is what opens your mind and leads you to experience an adventure.

Top 13 Things To Do in Winchester, England

One of England’s flagship Cathedral cities, Winchester makes for the ideal historic day trip or weekend getaway.

With one of the oldest high streets in the country and a religious building that’s famous the world over, there’s no question, this place is big on the heritage gems!

Set in the county of Hampshire, it’s pretty near London and can also be fairly easily reached from many places in the southwest too, which makes it a great option for a short trip.

With the South Downs National Park also beginning on its doorstep and the peace of the New Forest, the beauty of Dorset and the wonders of Salisbury and Stonehenge not far away, there’s plenty of options if you want to extend the adventure too.

So here, to fire up your wanderlust for Winchester, is my list of the top 13 things to do in this beautiful city…

#1 Head to the Cathedral

England, Winchester, Cathedral

It’s almost certainly no surprise that the number one entry on this list of the top things to do in Winchester is to head to the famous Cathedral.

With its official title being The Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Swithun , you’d be forgiven for finding that a bit of a mouthful and just sticking to the easy option, which is referring to the Cathedral by its location!

But whatever you choose to call it, there’s no question this guy is impressive!

One of the largest Cathedrals in Northern Europe, with parts that date back to 1079, this structure is absolutely massive when viewed from the outside, however it’s going inside that really allows you to get a sense of just how enormous this building is!

Open daily with an entrance fee, there’s nevertheless a lot to do here (including exhibitions, a crypt, some gardens and even a café) that make it worth the price!

#2 Snap the Great Hall

Hampshire-Winchester-Old-Buildings

Next up on this list of the top things to do in Winchester, we continue the heritage trail with a visit to a neighbouring building, the Great Hall.

Dating back to the 13 th century and one of the best-preserved examples of “aisled halls” (seems they were a thing back in the day!), this is a Winchester classic.

However it’s rarely the building which pulls the crowds here, rather it’s what’s held inside because, legend has it, King Arthur’s Round Table lives here – the only remnant of the once-standing Winchester Castle, which was actually built by William the Conqueror.

There’s also a fab array of period costumes you can try on here and take selfies wearing (which was honestly my favourite bit!), as well as some beautiful gardens to stroll.

The Great Hall is open 7 days a week and costs just a few pounds to enter.

Tours are also available if you want to learn more about the history of this Winchester icon.

#3 Wander the Historic High Street

independent travel winchester

At once a modern shopping district and an antiquated lane from hundreds of years ago, Winchester High Street manages to combine both the old and the new in a delightful blend of ages.

With parts dating back as far as the Roman period, The Square, The City Mill, Kingsgate and Hyde Abbey are all historic parts you can’t miss as you wander down.

Interspersed are the modern shops and bustling cafes of a lively city, which really helps this place feel like a living museum.

But the jewel in the crown for me has to be the Winchester Clock, which dates back to the 19 th century and now proudly looms out over the High Street.

#4 Enjoy the King’s Walks

Hampshire, Winchester, Painter

And once you’re done wandering the high street, how about taking a walk through one of Winchester’s best markets?

Yes, the King’s Walk Antique Market is just minutes from Winchester High Street and a short walk from the Cathedral too.

Running from Thursday to Sunday, this is a community hub with food and produce also on offer.

#5 Discover the Keats Walk

Hampshire, Winchester, Keats Walk

And once you’ve wandered the high street and to the market, it’s time to wander a little further afield and explore the charming Keats Walk.

Inspired by the famous British poet who strolled this path daily when he lived in Winchester, this trail is a gorgeous 2 mile circular through and around Winchester which celebrates not only this city, but also the famous writer who resided here, as well as his incredible poem Ode to Autumn , which is said to have been inspired by the beauty of Winchester.

How can you not give it a go after this?!

#6 Stroll Big in the South Downs

England, Seven Sisters, Me in Wind

But if you want something a bit more hardcore, then it’s time to head out on a big hike and thankfully Winchester offers plenty!

Set at the edge of the South Downs National Park – one of the best places to walk in England in my opinion thanks to its dramatic rolling countryside – the multi-day South Downs Way actually starts from Winchester.

Otherwise, there’s loads of one day options to select from here that will also take you into this delightful protected area.

My suggestion is to use the free version of the AllTrails app, which gives loads of great walks from Winchester with difficulty levels. length and reviews all built in!

#7 Take a Coffee with a View

Hampshire, Winchester, Coffee

And once you’ve enjoyed all that fresh air and exercise, it’s probably time to settle down with a coffee and, if you’re lucky, a slice of cake!

Thankfully the centre of Winchester is chockful of great cafes and independent bakeries that can offer you just that!

My pick of the bunch include Hoxton Bakehouse (yes biased because I live in Hackney!), 4 th Street Kitchen and The Hatch.

Oh and if you fancy a takeaway  – the Abbey Gardens (just off the High Street) are a great place to relax with a picnic on a sunny day!

#8 Hit Up a Museum… or 2!

Hampshire, Winchester, Street

Then, once you’re refreshed and revived, it’s time to get back on the sightseeing trail and to hit up at least one of Winchester’s museums.

After all, you can’t come this far and not learn a bit about the history you’re seeing around you.

Definitely one of the top things to do in Winchester, from the Winchester City Museum to the Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum, the Westgate Museum to the Gurkha Museum, there’s stacks to choose from.

My top pick however is a little out of the city, but well worth the effort if you can get there.

Yes the Jane Austen House’s is a must-visit for period drama lovers everywhere (hands in the air please!), as this is the exact house where the famous British author spent the last years of her life and penned some of her most renowned works.

Set in a beautiful village, this spot regularly gets top reviews thanks to both its attention to detail and the fascinating insight it provides into Jane’s and her sister’s lives.

#9 Check Out the Wolvesey Castle

Hampshire, Winchester, Great Hall

And on with the historical tour we go!

Next up in this guide to the top things to do in Winchester, we head back in time and into town to tick the 12 th century sight of Wolvesey Castle off our lists.

Also known as the Old Bishop’s Palace, as this is where the Medieval Bishops of Winchester lived, we are just a short distance away from the Cathedral here.

Now owned and managed by English Heritage , this set of ruins are free to enter and it’s well worth strolling around them and imagining the grandeur and power they conveyed at the height of their importance in the Middle Ages

#10 Say Hello to Alfred

Hampshire, Winchester, King Alfred

And while we’re on the subject of wealthy and powerful historic male figures, it’s time we had a quick chat about Kind Alfred!

You can see his statue at the end of Winchester High Street, which commemorates this most famous of Anglo-Saxon Kings, who strongly defended the Kingdom of Wessex (of which Hampshire was the capital) against the marauding Vikings.

He also made a heap of sweeping reforms that are said to have benefitted the common man greatly – hence why he is known as Alfred The Great – and this monument was built to mark the 1000 years since his death.

#11 Eat with Rick Stein

Moving to a rather more modern figure now, Rick Stein also has a spot on Winchester High Street, namely in the form of a restaurant!

This famous eatery is always a hit with visitors, so be sure to book in advance if you want to grab a table here!

Hampshire, Winchester, Abbey Gardens

#12 Visit the City Mill

Continue down past Rick Stein and King Alfred and you’ll eventually get to the National Trust treasure that is the City Mill.

Certainly one of the best things to do in Winchester, this beautifully preserved working mill is actually the oldest in England at over 1000 years old.

Wonderfully restored in 2004, this is now a working mill powered by the River Itchen and paying a visit to this heritage gem will actually allow you to see how flour was stoneground for centuries using the force of water alone.

You can then sample the produce in the onsite café, before you head off to wander the grounds and spot some of the magnificent wildlife that call this place home – including kingfishers.

A great one for the whole family, this top thing to do in Winchester is free to enter for National Trust members (if you’re late to the party, sign up here ) and is open every day except Tuesday.

Set on the edge of the South Downs, you can either walk here along one of the trails from Winchester (The Itchen Way is a hot choice!) or else catch a local bus or drive, although it’s worth noting there’s no onsite parking.

#13 Do Your Christmas Shopping!

Hampshire, Winchester, Bookshop

And last but least, one of the top things to do in Winchester is to time your visit to this quintessentially English city to coincide with your Christmas shopping.

Yes Christmas is probably when Winchester Cathedral – in fact, this whole city – is at its most charming and magical!

Set in the Cathedral grounds, this festive spectacle has over 100 stalls of hand-picked producers who set up shop in cute winter chalets – plus there’s an ice rink, craft village & even a food court too!

Inspired by the German Christmas markets, Winchester is one of the most famous alternatives outside of that country and is the perfect way to get into the festive spirit!

Top Winchester Travel Tips

Hampshire, Winchester, Bus Station

Winchester is located in the county of Hampshire in the south of England.

Getting from London to Winchester by train is probably the most common way of getting to the city, especially for those on public transport.

There are several direct departures every day from London Waterloo station and the journey takes just over an hour.

The train station in Winchester is very close to the centre of the city and you can easily walk from there to all the main attractions in around 10 minutes.

You can also take the National Express bus to Winchester from London, but it takes a fair old while, which is why it’s definitely not advised for day or weekend trips.

This option is usually for longer excursions however, or when budget is a greater consideration than time, so it’s useful to know National Express runs the service from London Victoria Coach Station to Winchester bus station, which is brilliantly located just off the high street!

As always, I book all my train and coach travel in the UK using Trainline – I like the way they compare multiple journeys and use split-fare technology to get you the best prices.

If you’re travelling from London, there are also a number of day trip tours that will not only take you to Winchester (meaning you don’t have to worry about transport), but include a guided experience in parts of this city too!

This is a winner if you’re short on time, so check out this top option for a Winchester tour from London as a superb option.

When to Visit & How Long to Stay?

No question in my mind that you should definitely visit the historic city of Winchester during the summer season.

This will allow you to get the most from the city’s lovely setting because, let’s face it, England is exponentially more beautiful when the sun shines!

The other option for visiting Winchester is during December when the Christmas markets are in full flow and the city takes on a beautiful festive flavour.

You can actually probably enjoy most of Winchester’s attractions in a day, but if you really want to get under the skin of this city, and perhaps enjoy some of the surrounding attractions, including the South Downs National Park, then why not make it a weekend… you won’t regret it!

How to Get Around Winchester?

The centre of Winchester is easily walkable on foot and I honestly wouldn’t advise any other method of transport, especially given the traffic!

If you’re going slightly further out of the city, then thankfully there is a great local bus service that should be able to get you to most places.

Check out the Stagecoach website to plan your journey.

If you’re continuing on elsewhere after Winchester, like across to the New Forest as I was, then it’s probably best to hire a car, which will allow you the flexibility to explore more rural and remote areas.

As always, I recommend Discover Cars for the job.

Where to Stay in Winchester?

And if you’re looking at staying overnight in Winchester then here’s my top suggestions…

Winchester Premier Inn certainly also offers great value accommodation within strolling distance of the city centre and the train station.

This is well-suited to overnight stays, where you just want somewhere to lay your head and aren’t too worried about the feel of the place.

If you want something with a more independent spirit, then check out the quirky Black Hole – very central and with a great breakfast, it also has a lovely roof terrace!

Don’t be put off by the name… it’s a great spot!

For more ideas, check out this list of other recommended spots.

5 Essential Packing Items for Winchester

And here’s 5 packing essentials you shouldn’t head to Winchester without…

#1 A Good Camera

No doubt you’re going to be snapping like crazy in this iconic city and need to ensure you have a good camera to do the place justice.

I love my Sony A6000 , which is light, compact and great for travel.

#2 Decent Walking Shoes

You’re likely to do a lot of walking within the city of Winchester, let alone beyond it, so ensuring you have a decent pair of walking shoes is a must.

These trainers from New Balance are ideal (and totally stylish) for the job.

#3 Light Waterproof Jacket

Whatever the time of year, you have to remember this is England after all, a country in which the heavens can open at any point!

Don’t get caught out and ensure you have a good lightweight and waterproof jacket with you!

#4 Compact Hiking Day Pack

I never go on any trip, no matter how short, without a sturdy backpack to ensure I’ve got everything I need and that the weight is equally distributed across my back and shoulders,

This super featherweight Kompressor from Marmot is my go-to, because it folds down to nothing and is water-resistant – perfect for travel!

#5 Portable Charger

And finally, I would never head off anywhere without my trusty Anker Portable Charger , which keeps my phone charged meaning I can take all the snaps and use all the maps I need wherever and whenever I am!

Where to Head to After Winchester?

Top of the list of places to visit near Winchester if you’re carrying on your travels are the delightful New Forest to the south with its superb walks and pubs !

Otherwise, continue west out of Winchester and Hampshire you’ll be pretty closer to Wiltshire with its famed cathedral city of Salisbury and, of course, the pre-historic gem of Stonehenge .

Finally, over to the southwest, it’s just a short drive on until you reach Dorset and the excellent number of things there are to enjoy in this county too.

Or, if it’s more cathedrals you’re after, then the other most impressive ones I’ve visited in England are Wells in Somerset, Liverpool , York , Ely in Cambridgeshire and St Pauls in London.

History of Winchester, Virginia

With a long history of Native American settlement on the lands, the city known as today’s Winchester was first known as Fredrick Town in the 1730s. An immigrant from Winchester, England, Colonel James Wood was the town’s first court clerk and instrumental in its establishment–and the town was later renamed after his birthplace. And, a young George Washington spent a lot of time in the city, surveying the area before beginning his political career.

The town also served as an important battleground during the Civil War–possession went back and forth between the Union and Confederate forces more than 70 times.

Where to Stay in Winchester

  • In the Old Town – There’s a reason why everyone loves the George Washington Hotel ( Booking | Hotels | TripAdvisor ). Only a block away from the heart of historic downtown Winchester on East Piccadilly Street, the restored historic hotel is found in a Georgian Revival brick building. Now a Wyndham Grand Hotel property featuring amenities like an indoor pool, a spa tub, and a full-service spa on-site, it’s a phenomenal place to base yourself when you visit.
  • Apartment stay – If you’re looking for an apartment stay in downtown Winchester, this beautiful Airbnb is within walking distance of the Old Town. Originally known as the Seymour House, built in 1776, today, it’s a fully renovated space with everything you’d need for a romantic getaway.
  • Close to Shenandoah University – Attached to a shopping center, the Hampton Inn Winchester ( Booking | Hotels | TripAdvisor ) is great if you’re visiting Shenandoah University. Within walking distance to the college, the standard Hilton-brand hotel features a couple of choice amenities, like an outdoor pool during the summer season and an on-site fitness center.
  • Luxury stay – Although it’s a little outside the city, L’Auberge Provencale ( Booking | Hotels | TripAdvisor ) is worth the splurge. The picture-perfect bed and breakfast is a 20-minute drive from the Old Town of Winchester and home to an outdoor seasonal pool with a beautiful terrace to enjoy your complimentary breakfast, an on-site spa, and a restaurant with its own bar and lounge.

Check out the Shenandoah Valley Civil War Museum in the old Fredrick County Courthouse

independent travel winchester

Another one of the best Winchester VA things to do is visit the Shenandoah Valley Civil War Museum. It’s housed in the old Frederick County Court House right in the center of North Loudoun Street, built in 1840. The building was used as a hospital, prison, and barracks for both Union and Confederate soldiers during the war.

Head inside the museum to visit a restored version of the courtroom, wall drawings left by soldiers, and a collection of artifacts and exhibits dedicated to Shenandoah Valley Civil War history.

Grab a bite at the old Union Bank building

Experience the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum

independent travel winchester

The entire family can enjoy hours of fun at the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum. Located in downtown Winchester in a renovated furniture building off the historic district, the exhibit areas are focused on mathematics, science, humanities, and arts–there’s even an artist-in-residence on-site.

The museum is interactive with hands-on activities for kids and parents, and in the warmer months, the rooftop sky level is an excellent place for gardening and games.

Wander around the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley and the Glen Burnie Historic House & Gardens

independent travel winchester

You could spend an entire day trip to Winchester just at this museum! There are four significant galleries, rotating exhibitions, a café, and a museum store at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley.

Their 7 acres of gardens are exquisite. As you wander the grounds, you’ll see how they incorporated distinct gardens dedicated to roses, statues, vegetables, Chinese-style, and perennials throughout.

They also have various musical performances, youth workshops, and other sets of exciting events for kids throughout the year. You can find the calendar of events on their website.

The Glen Burnie House is included in the regional cultural center. The oldest parts of the historic house were built by Robert, James Wood’s son, in the late 1790s, and his descendants inhabited the residence all the way up to 1992. Experience the house and beautiful gardens to learn stories about those who lived here.

Check out the Handley Library

independent travel winchester

Found on West Picadilly Street in the center of town, the Handley Library was designed by New York architects J. Stewart Barney and Henry Otis Chapman. It’s an exceptional example of the Beaux-Art style, prominent from 1890 to 1920, with lavish cultural decoration and architectural elements derived from the European Renaissance. Above the entry, you’ll find a copper dome with fluted Corinthian columns. The rest of the architecture is inspired by an open book, with a rotunda as the spine and two wings as the open book covers.

Fun Fact : Even though he never resided in Winchester, John Handley, a Pennsylvania judge, bequeathed the city $250,000 to establish and manage the public library.

Visit George Washington’s Office Museum

independent travel winchester

Before the construction of Fort Loudoun finished, military officer George Washington needed an office. He set up his headquarters in a small log structure which operated from September 1755 through December 1756. Now, the area he once used as his office is the center section, with stone additions flanking either side.

Outside, you’ll see the cannon left there by General Edward Braddock. George Washington’s Office Museum is open daily for tours from the beginning of spring until the end of October but call ahead to make a reservation and for specific times.

Find Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarter’s Museum

independent travel winchester

Just around the corner from George Washington’s office, you can find Confederate General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson’s Headquarter’s Museum. He used the Hudson River Gothic Revival-style house throughout the winter of 1861 to 1862. Maintained from the time he occupied the space, you can observe the most extensive collection of his personal effects and artifacts here.

Visit Winchester National Cemetery and Mount Hebron Cemetery

independent travel winchester

As a final resting place for Union Soldiers, Winchester National Cemetery contains gravesites and 15 monuments dedicated to battles and lives lost during the Civil War. You’re welcome to visit every day from dawn to dusk.

Across the street from the Winchester National Cemetery, you’ll find Mount Hebron Cemetery. Also known as Stonewall Confederate Cemetery, this subsection of the larger site is for deceased Confederate soldiers. Once a month throughout the summer, you can tour the Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Visit the Patsy Cline Historic House

independent travel winchester

Country music legend Patsy Cline was born in Winchester, Virginia, on September 8, 1932. She became one of country music’s most popular singers and one of the first to successfully cross over from Country to Pop. Tragically, she died at the age of 30 in a plane crash on March 5, 1963, returning from a concert tour in Kansas City, Kansas.

However, before the world knew her as Patsy Cline, Virginia Patterson Hensley lived just outside the Old Town area of Winchester in a humble home from age 16 through 21 and returned to the house many times after that. At the Patsy Cline House, visit her teenage home and learn about the woman she was before she became a legend. Find opening dates and tour hours on the town’s website .

Things to do near Winchester

Head outside of town for the wineries.

independent travel winchester

While you can cross the border into West Virginia or Maryland , there are over 20 vineyards within 30 minutes of Winchester, making this a great place to explore wine tasting.

Not affiliated with the make-up influencer, James Charles Winery & Vineyard is found just on the outskirts of town. Ancestors of the Bogaty family immigrated from Italy and brought their winemaking tradition with them, which they now share with the Winchester community.

In Stephens City, you’ll find Valerie Hill Vineyard & Winery . They’re committed to preserving and sharing the art of Virginia wines which they feature in their Tasting House–located in the 1807 Federal-style brick manor on-site.

Both vineyards offer wine tastings daily, incredible views with outdoor seating, and a lite fare menu.

Visit the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum

independent travel winchester

Like Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum located in Poughkeepsie, New York , the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum is found close to Winchester points of interest in nearby Staunton, Virginia.

Fun Fact : Woodrow Wilson served as the 28th President of the United States from 1913 to 1921, throughout World War I.

Born in Staunton in 1856, you can find Wilson’s Presidential Library in his childhood birthplace.  Take a tour of the building to learn about life in the mid-to-late 19th-century. Tour the galleries to see artifacts like his famous restored 1919 Pierce-Arrow limousine, weapons, uniforms, and World War I paraphernalia. There’s even a World War I trench exhibit complete with sound effects to help people understand what it was like to be in battle.

Find your inner history buff at the Frontier Culture Museum

independent travel winchester

Just like Colonial Williamsburg in Williamsburg, VA , the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton, Virginia is also living history museum dedicated to what life was like for immigrants from the Old World to the United States.

The museum showcases the differences between life on 18th and 19th-century American farms versus those found in West Africa, England, Ireland, and Germany.

They also have a Native American exhibit, an early American schoolhouse, an 18th-century Irish forge, where historic re-enactors show you what life was really like in those environments. The museum also hosts special events all year for more opportunities to interact with history.

You can find information about their hours and ticketing on their website.

Watch a Shakespeare play at the American Shakespeare Center

independent travel winchester

Can we talk about how cool this is, please?! In Staunton, Virginia, the American Shakespeare Center has created one of the world’s only working replicas of William Shakespeare’s Jacobean indoor theater space, Blackfriars Theatre.

Called Black Friars Playhouse here in Virginia, the theatre produces several plays by the Bard each year, as well as the traditional A Christmas Carol every December. I went to college for acting and studied Shakespeare extensively, so when I tell you this is first on my list the next time I’m looking for things to do in Winchester, believe it!

Check out Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park

independent travel winchester

The partnership of Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park portrays the Shenandoah Valley’s rich legacy, from early settlements into the Civil War.

Cedar Creek is the space on which the major Civil War Battle of Cedar Creek took place in 1864. This battle marks the last time the Confederacy ever attempted to invade the north or threaten Washington D.C. through the Shenandoah Valley, and the Union win assisted Abraham Lincoln in winning his reelection bid for President.

Although a lot of the battlefield area is not open for public viewing, you can take a self-guided or schedule a ranger-guided driving tour to be taken through the field and its history on public roads.

Fun Fact : Every year, the Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation produces a two-day Battle of Cedar Creek Reenactment! Find this year’s reenactment information on their website .

Belle Grove Plantation was built in 1797 as the home for Major Major Isaac Hite Jr., and Nelly Madison Hite, the sister of the 4th president of the United States, James Madison. Union General Philip Sheridan used the home as his headquarters for the Battle of Cedar Creek. With a range of programs and exhibits, there is so much history to explore at this park!

Play with the dinosaurs at Dinosaur Land

independent travel winchester

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play with dinosaurs? At Dinosaur Land in White Post, visit a prehistoric forest with more than 50 life-size dinosaur recreations. Shenandoah National Park

independent travel winchester

From raging waterfalls and panoramic views to beautiful scenery, Shenandoah National Park offers something for everyone. It was founded in 1935 in order to develop more national parks east of the Mississippi River, and the driving distance is only 75 miles from Washington, D.C.

Skyline Drive is the park’s only road, a 105-mile drive that takes roughly three hours to complete–not including stops. Over 500 miles of hiking trails are available throughout the road trip route, with more than 70 overlooks, two visitors centers, fishing areas, picnic sites, and several spectacular waterfalls.

Williamsburg, Virginia

Looking for a historic United States city to visit this year? Filled with Colonial history, you'll find many things to do in Williamsburg, Virginia!

About a three-hour drive from Winchester, Williamsburg, Virginia is one of the three cities in the Historic Triangle of Virginia.

After visiting this incredible area, I wrote a guide on all of the fantastic things to do in Williamsburg . Colonial Williamsburg, known as the largest living history museum in the United States, is located in the city’s center.

Learn about the customs and history of Virginia’s former capital city as reenactors realistically engage with the town.

While walking the grounds, you can see many of the structures that were built when Williamsburg was at its peak, as well as visit the College of William & Mary campus across the street.

Also, there are three theme parks in town–Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Water Country USA, and the Great Wolf Lodge (an indoor water park), and Jamestown and Yorktown, the two other towns in the Historic Triangle, are close enough to visit for easy day trips from Williamsburg , too.

With so much American history around, which of the best things to do in Winchester, Virginia will you experience first?

IS IT WORTH VISITING WINCHESTER?

Winchester, located in Hampshire, England, is a city steeped in history and culture . Known for its stunning architecture, rich heritage and vibrant community, Winchester has long been considered one of the most important cities in the UK.

From ancient Roman ruins to a medieval cathedral and modern-day museums, Winchester offers visitors an unforgettable experience that spans centuries of human history.

Winchester was one of my favourite day trips from London (and weekend escapes) when I lived and worked in the capital! I couldn’t resist the lure of the cathedral and exploring the higgledy-piggledy streets.

In this article, you’ll discover the top things to do in Winchester and some of the city’s most significant historical landmarks, how to get there, and recommendations for where to eat and stay.

Where Is Winchester?

Winchester Map

Winchester is a small city in the county of Hampshire in southern England. It lies approximately 60 miles south-west of London and has a population of around 45,000.

The city is best known for its magnificent cathedral, which dates back to the 11th century. The cathedral houses one of Europe’s largest collections of medieval stained glass and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

History Of Winchester

Winchester has a rich history and was the capital city of England during the Saxon period. Visitors can explore Winchester Castle , home to King Arthur’s Round Table , and walk along the ancient city walls that date back to Roman times.

12 Things To Do In Winchester

With King Arthur’s legendary Round Table and Winchester Cathedral , it’s not surprising that visitors flock to this enchanting city to learn about its past.

There’s more to discover beyond the city’s historical landmarks. From its thriving arts scene to fantastic restaurants and bars, exploring Winchester is a truly rewarding experience.

Are you ready to see what this vibrant city has to offer?

1. Visit Winchester Cathedral

Exterior of the beautiful Winchester Cathedral in England

Winchester Cathedral is one of England’s most iconic religious structures, with a rich history that dates back to the 7th century.

Dedicated initially to Saint Swithun , the cathedral has been rebuilt and expanded several times, creating an architectural masterpiece showcasing the evolution of English building styles.

If you only have a day in Winchester, the cathedral should be the first place you visit!

The first cathedral on this site was built around 648 AD when King Cenwalh of Wessex founded a monastery; however, little remains of this early structure as it was destroyed by fire in 1079.

The building of the current cathedral began shortly after this devastating blaze: it represents some of the finest examples of Norman architecture.

Over time, various parts have been added to Winchester Cathedral, including chapels, transepts and cloisters. Each addition reflects changing architectural styles from Gothic to Tudor and beyond.

Top things to do in Winchester Cathedral

✔️ Gaze at the grand nave , which boasts impressive rib vaulting and stunning stained-glass windows .

✔️ Check out the famous West Window , featuring intricate medieval tracery that creates a dazzling kaleidoscope effect when sunlight streams through it.

✔️ The Lady Chapel is one of the most beautiful spaces in the cathedral, with its ornate fan vaulting ceiling and delicate carvings adorning every surface.

✔️ Discover the tombs of William Rufus (son of William the Conqueror), who was buried after he died during a hunting accident in the nearby New Forest. Henry III and Jane Austen are also interred in the cathedral.

✔️ Take on the 213 steps of the Tower Tour : one of the best quirky things to do in Winchester. You’ll see the bell ringing chamber, the great Cathedral bells, and walk the length of the Nave roof with its massive wood beams.

✔️ Visit the cool underground Norman crypt to see the incredible Anthony Gormley sculpture Sound II . Guided tours run Monday through Saturday at 10.30 am, 12.30 pm and 2.30 pm, although these may not run if there has been heavy rain, as the crypt is liable to flood!

If you’re planning to visit the city at Christmas, you’ll want to add the Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market to your itinerary, as it’s one of the best in the south of England 🙂

2. Check Out The Statue Of King Alfred The Great

Statue of King Alfred the Great, Winchester

The statue of King Alfred the Great is one of its most prominent landmarks in Winchester. The figure stands prominently on the Broadway, in the heart of Winchester city centre.

The statue depicts King Alfred holding his sword aloft with one arm while pointing towards heaven with his other hand – a symbol of his faith and military prowess. This spot will also give you an excellent view of some of Winchester’s historic buildings.

Remember your camera! This iconic landmark makes for an excellent photo opportunity that will remind you of your visit for years.

3. Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum

The Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum in Winchester is a must-see for lovers of military history. It tells the story of one of the British Army’s most famous regiments, from its formation during the Napoleonic Wars to its role in modern conflicts.

The college has a rich history and remarkable architecture, making it an excellent tourist destination. Here are some of the things you can see on a tour of Winchester College:

A peaceful space where students can study or relax while enjoying views of beautiful gardens tended by generations of students since medieval times.

The two museums located within Winchester College offer fascinating insights into the school’s history and culture:

  • The Treasury Museum showcases rare artefacts from the school’s past, including ancient manuscripts, silverware, artwork, uniforms, furniture, and weapons used during battles fought by famous alumni like Sir Walter Raleigh .
  • The Natural History Museum houses an extensive collection of specimens from all over the world.

8. Take a stroll along the River Itchen

River Itchen, Winchester, UK

Winchester is known for its stunning scenery and wildlife. One of the best ways to experience this natural beauty is by strolling along the River Itchen, which runs through the city.

The historic Winchester Great Hall has stood tall for over 800 years! This magnificent hall is famous for its medieval architecture and the legendary Round Table that hangs on its walls.

Here are some things to see and do at Winchester Great Hall:

✔️ Enjoy the impressive architecture of this ancient building. The hall was built in the 13th century and featured beautiful stone walls, high ceilings, and large windows that let in plenty of natural light.

✔️ See King Arthur’s Round Table – said to have been used by King Arthur and his knights during their meetings. However, some historians believe it was created much later as a symbol of chivalry.

✔️ Learn about Medieval History through interactive exhibits throughout the hall, including displays on medieval life, battles fought nearby, and famous figures who visited Winchester, like Queen Victoria.

10. Winchester City Mill

✔️ Watch the mill in action to see flour produced using traditional methods. You can watch as the water wheel turns and see how grain is milled into flour.

11. See a show at Theatre Royal Winchester

This historic venue in the city centre has entertained audiences for over 150 years, with a diverse range of shows and events.

From comedy to drama, musicals to dance performances, there is always a show worth seeing at Theatre Royal Winchester.

12. Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium

One of the best things to do in Winchester with kids is to visit the Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium.

The Science Centre boasts over 100 interactive exhibits to stimulate curiosity and inspire learning. My son loved the hands-on experiments , science shows, and workshops on biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, astronomy and space exploration.

We both enjoyed the night sky virtual tour at the state-of-the-art planetarium and the interactive displays in the themed galleries, which are equally fascinating for kids and adults 🙂

Four Unesco World Heritage sites in the UK are among those at the most risk of climate change devastation, a study has found.

World Heritage sites gain their status for being an outstanding value to humanity and showcase some of the world’s cultural legacy, rich history and natural wonders. Unesco bestows these places with the title to encourage their protection and preservation while incentivising people to recognise their importance.

New data suggests that coastal flooding, droughts, landslides and storm surges are some of the top factors that are putting heritage sites at risk.

In an analysis by Climate X, a global climate risk data analysis organisation, their experts found that four out of 35 of the UK’s Unesco Heritage Sites are among the top 50 sites in the world that will be at risk by 2050.

Using Climate X’s ‘Spectra’ platform algorithm to determine how climate change will affect 500 natural and man-made heritage sites, the analysts discovered how the sites would fare in eight global warming scenarios.

Volcanic archipelago St Kilda in Scotland is at risk of coastal flooding

They found that the most at risk in the UK , taking third place on the worldwide list, is the Forth Bridge in Edinburgh, Scotland , a structure representing an important milestone in bridge design and construction in the Victorian period.

However, the railway bridge is exposed to a coastal flood risk that could impact the preservation of the marvelled structure.

Volcanic archipelago St Kilda, also in Scotland, featuring at number six on the world scale, is also predicted to be at risk of climate change. Coastal flooding could impact its high cliffs, where colonies of endangered species of birds, such as puffins and gannets, nest.

The third Scottish heritage site to appear on the list is New Lanark, a small 18th-century village in which utopian idealist Robert Owen created a model industrial community.

However, analysts say that this idyllic village, appearing in seventh place in the top 50, is at risk of landslides caused by climate change.

The final UK heritage site to appear is Yorkshire’s Studley Royal Park, featuring at 27th place, as being at risk of storm activity impacting its preservation.

The park includes the 12th-century Ruins of Fountains Abbey and other buildings from various periods of British history, all placed among an what the UN-body describes as an “exceptionally beautiful” landscape designed in the 18th century.

There were many other wel-known heritage sites that made a list, such as Australia ’s Sydney Opera House (at risk of coastal flooding), the USA ’s Olympic National Park in Washington, predicted to be impacted by flooding and landslides, and the West Norwegian Fjords in Norway , at risk of coastal flooding.

The sacred Sansa Buddhist Mountain Monasteries in South Korea are at risk of river and surface flooding

Taking the top spot at the most at-risk Unesco World Heritage sites is the Sansa Buddhist Mountain Monasteries in South Korea , sacred temples that were established between the 7th and 9th centuries but also structures that analysis believe could be at risk of river and surfacing flooding.

Lukky Ahmed, the CEO and co-founder of Climate X, said that their findings should be a warning to governments and global organisations to recognise the impact climate change also has on our cultural heritage worldwide.

“The potential impact of climate change on these sites is profound. But it’s not just our past heritage that’s at risk – it’s our present, too,” he said.

“While the loss of these cultural treasures – many of which have endured for millennia – would, of course, be devastating, it’s also vital to remember the real societal and economic impact of climate change is happening in the here and now.”

“Our findings serve as a stark warning for governments, preservationists, and the global community to prioritise the safeguarding of our planet – to preserve our ancient monuments and our current assets and infrastructure – and to protect life today and into the future.”
