Avoid contaminated water

Leptospirosis

How most people get sick (most common modes of transmission)

  • Touching urine or other body fluids from an animal infected with leptospirosis
  • Swimming or wading in urine-contaminated fresh water, or contact with urine-contaminated mud
  • Drinking water or eating food contaminated with animal urine
  • Avoid contaminated water and soil
  • Avoid floodwater

Clinical Guidance

Avoid bug bites.

Leishmaniasis

  • Sand fly bite
  • Avoid Bug Bites
  • Mosquito bite
  • An infected pregnant woman can spread it to her unborn baby

Airborne & droplet

  • Breathing in air or accidentally eating food contaminated with the urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents
  • Bite from an infected rodent
  • Less commonly, being around someone sick with hantavirus (only occurs with Andes virus)
  • Avoid rodents and areas where they live
  • Avoid sick people

Tuberculosis (TB)

  • Breathe in TB bacteria that is in the air from an infected and contagious person coughing, speaking, or singing.

Learn actions you can take to stay healthy and safe on your trip. Vaccines cannot protect you from many diseases in Portugal, so your behaviors are important.

Eat and drink safely

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). You can learn more about safe food and drink choices when traveling by accessing the resources below.

  • Choose Safe Food and Drinks When Traveling
  • Water Treatment Options When Hiking, Camping or Traveling
  • Global Water, Sanitation and Hygiene | Healthy Water
  • Avoid Contaminated Water During Travel

You can also visit the  Department of State Country Information Pages  for additional information about food and water safety.

Prevent bug bites

Although Portugal is an industrialized country, bug bites here can still spread diseases. Just as you would in the United States, try to avoid bug bites while spending time outside or in wooded areas.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Consider using permethrin-treated clothing and gear if spending a lot of time outside. Do not use permethrin directly on skin.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

  • FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
  • Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
  • Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

  • Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
  • Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Although bed bugs do not carry disease, they are an annoyance. See our information page about avoiding bug bites for some easy tips to avoid them. For more information on bed bugs, see Bed Bugs .

For more detailed information on avoiding bug bites, see Avoid Bug Bites .

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in Portugal include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip:

  • Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
  • Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
  • Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
  • If you are outside for many hours in the heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
  • Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
  • Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

  • Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
  • Do not dive into shallow water.
  • Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
  • Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if you are driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

  • Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
  • Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
  • Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
  • Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
  • If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately.  Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

  • Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
  • Go to a doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

  • Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

  • Use latex condoms correctly.
  • Do not inject drugs.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
  • Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
  • If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

  • Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
  • Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance for things your regular insurance will not cover.
  • Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medicines you take.
  • Bring copies of your prescriptions for medicine and for eye glasses and contact lenses.
  • Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call Portugal’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
  • Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

  • Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
  • Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
  • Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

  • Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
  • Make sure there are seatbelts.
  • Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
  • Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
  • Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
  • Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

  • Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
  • Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
  • Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

  • Wear a seatbelt at all times.
  • Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
  • When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
  • Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
  • Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
  • If you choose to drive a vehicle in Portugal, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
  • Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
  • Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
  • Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
  • If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
  • Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Maintain personal security

Use the same common sense traveling overseas that you would at home, and always stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Before you leave

  • Research your destination(s), including local laws, customs, and culture.
  • Monitor travel advisories and alerts and read travel tips from the US Department of State.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) .
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary, contact information, credit cards, and passport with someone at home.
  • Pack as light as possible, and leave at home any item you could not replace.

While at your destination(s)

  • Carry contact information for the nearest US embassy or consulate .
  • Carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp; leave the actual passport securely in your hotel.
  • Follow all local laws and social customs.
  • Do not wear expensive clothing or jewelry.
  • Always keep hotel doors locked, and store valuables in secure areas.
  • If possible, choose hotel rooms between the 2nd and 6th floors.

Healthy Travel Packing List

Use the Healthy Travel Packing List for Portugal for a list of health-related items to consider packing for your trip. Talk to your doctor about which items are most important for you.

Why does CDC recommend packing these health-related items?

It’s best to be prepared to prevent and treat common illnesses and injuries. Some supplies and medicines may be difficult to find at your destination, may have different names, or may have different ingredients than what you normally use.

If you are not feeling well after your trip, you may need to see a doctor. If you need help finding a travel medicine specialist, see Find a Clinic . Be sure to tell your doctor about your travel, including where you went and what you did on your trip. Also tell your doctor if you were bitten or scratched by an animal while traveling.

It’s been a long 15 months for U.S. travelers eager to visit Portugal, but now the wait is over. Portugal on Tuesday reopened to all COVID-tested travelers from the United States, the U.S. Embassy in Portugal reports .

“Beginning June 15, non-essential (i.e., tourist travel) from the United States to mainland Portugal is permitted for travelers with proof of a negative COVID-19 test,” the embassy says in its latest update.

One week ago, Reuters reported that Portugal was preparing to open to vaccinated U.S. travelers, but there is no COVID-19 vaccine requirement for travel to Portugal from the U.S. at this time. Instead, all passengers entering Portugal, except for children age 24 months and younger, must simply provide proof of a negative, lab-generated COVID-19 test result. It either needs to be a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), such as a PCR test, performed within 72 hours of boarding, or a rapid antigen test performed within 24 hours of boarding.

No additional testing or quarantine will be required for mainland Portugal.

Airlines and cruise lines are being asked to confirm the test results prior to allowing passengers to board flights or ships heading for Portugal.

Travelers should complete a Passenger Locator Card within 48 hours of traveling to Portugal.

The current measure is in place until June 27 when it will be reviewed; the rule will be revisited every two weeks after that and must be renewed to remain in place.

The number of COVID cases in Portugal has been on the decline—in the last month, Portugal reported 16,200 COVID cases, down from a high of nearly 307,000 cases in January, according to Johns Hopkins University . To date, 23 percent of Portugal’s residents are fully vaccinated, Johns Hopkins reports.

Consequently, Portugal has begun to relax some of its COVID-19 restrictions . As of June 14, restaurants, cafés, and patisseries are allowed to welcome up to 6 people inside or 10 people outside and can stay open until 1 a.m. Public transportation can operate at two-thirds capacity. Concert halls can welcome up to 50 percent capacity and remain open until midnight.

Visit Portugal, the country’s destination marketing arm, reminds travelers that face masks are still mandatory in Portugal, that alcohol consumption in public spaces is banned (alcohol can be served and consumed in restaurants and on terraces), and that some businesses and tourist attractions may continue to have limited capacity or hours (such as shopping centers).

U.S. travelers who want to visit the Portuguese islands of the Azores or Madeira should be aware that they both have their own rules for entry. To enter the Azores , a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of departure is required, including for domestic flights, for passengers age 12 and older. Arrivals can also show proof of recovery or test upon arrival and quarantine until they received their results. Those who want to stay in the Azores for more than seven days will need to test again on the sixth day.

Those heading to Madeira, including on a domestic flight, must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of departure, proof of being fully vaccinated for COVID-19, or proof of recovery from COVID-19.

Related CDC Approves At-Home COVID Tests for International Travel All international passengers age two and older flying into the U.S. (including returning U.S. citizens and permanent residents) must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test procured within three days before boarding their flight to the U.S.

According to the U.S. Embassy in Portugal, COVID-19 antigen and PCR tests with results ready within 72 hours are available in Portugal. The embassy refers travelers to the Portuguese health department for additional information regarding COVID-19 testing locations.

u.s. travel to portugal covid 19

[Updated on 1 July]

Entry Requirements can vary greatly during the Covid-19 pandemic. We do our best to update these as new information is released, but please confirm travel eligibility with Government issued information here .

Entry Requirements for Travelers to Portugal

Depending on your country of origin, you may need a passport, visa or simply your national ID card to enter Portugal.

Traveling with a Passport

EU citizens within the Schengen area are able to enter the country simply by exhibiting their ID card – which is mandatory when flying, for example, but may not always be asked for when entering via land. Passports are of course valid as well, while no visa or return ticket is required.

International travelers (outside EU) must provide a valid passport with at least six months’ validity, as well as proof of sufficient funds to cover their stay. A return ticket is recommended but not compulsory.

Traveling with a Visa

European citizens do not need a visa to enter Portugal, however should their stay be longer than 90 days they will need to apply for a residence permit.

Citizens of non-EU countries mentioned in the table above do not need a visa for a stay of up to 90 days in any 180 day window if they are traveling with the purpose of visiting friends or family, for business reasons, or to attend cultural and sports events. If the purpose of travel is different, it is recommended to check with the respective embassies or consulates in order to obtain correct information.

Nationals of countries not mentioned above may be able to visit Portugal and other Schengen countries for up to 90 days. More detailed entry requirements can be checked here when planning your trip.

Traveling During the COVID-19 Pandemic

As the Coronavirus pandemic evolves, so do entry requirements for Portugal. The local government has implemented a series of public health measures to protect citizens and visitors alike.

A digital certificate with full vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test is no longer required to enter Portugal! You can travel to Portugal without a test or proof of vaccination.

Covid-19 Rules in Portugal

Most COVID-19 restrictions in Portugal have been lifted. For mainland Portugal and the Azores, you ONLY need to wear a mask in public transport, taxis as well as when visiting nursing homes and health facilities. You do not need to wear a mask in restaurants, bars, shopping malls, etc.

In Madeira, the mask rules are slightly different. The use of a mask is mandatory for people over the age of 6 in the following scenarios:

  • Health facilities and services, including pharmacies;
  • In public transport, taxis and similar passenger transport;
  • Platforms and covered access areas to public transport, including airports and maritime terminals;
  • In confirmed cases of COVID-19, in all circumstances, whenever the person is out of the location of isolation, until the 10th day after the onset of symptoms or a positive test result.

According to an update by DGS on July 7 to norm 004/2020 , here are the full Covid-19 isolation updates:

  • People with asymptomatic infection or mild illness: 5 days
  • People with asymptomatic infection or mild illness, hospitalize or in an elderly residence: 7 days
  • People with moderate illness: 10 days
  • People with serious illness: 20 days or 10 days with a negative rapid antigen test
  • People with serious immunosuppression: case by case basis decided by medical professionals

It is also no longer necessary to quarantine after being in contact with someone with COVID. You do not need to provide an EU Covid Digital Certificate when entering a restaurant, club, or bar, meaning you no longer need a vaccine or test to enter these locations.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, we advise you to always check with your embassy or consulate for advice on your trip. You will also find useful information here . SEF (Portuguese entity for borders control) also has up-to-date information we recommend checking before traveling, as well as this official European website.

Hi Lara I’m hoping to travel from Scotland to Faro 26th March 22 but I’ve just noticed my passport expires 25th April 22 does this mean I can’t travel? Regards Helen

Unfortunately on the Scottish government’s website it says you need at least 6 months on your passport to travel to an EU country. https://www.mygov.scot/travelling-to-europe

But I am pretty sure you can get a passport fast tracked in one week which means you could still make it, check here https://www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently

Wishing you luck!

Hi Lara ,. Good evening I am from Pakistan .I want to know that what is the process of visa for Pakistan. And when registration start for WYD2023 lisbon

Hi Yasir, I recommend contacting an immigration lawyer in Portugal to help you out.

Are Indian nationals living in USA on work visa allowed to travel to Portugal with a Schengen visa? I have tried contacting the embassy here in US but did not get a response and not able to find this information anywhere.

It is my understanding that you can travel to Portugal with a Schengen visa. We recommend trying to contact the Portuguese embassy again so that everything is in order. Check out this list of Portuguese embassies in the US https://www.portugal.com/travel/portuguese-embassies-and-consulates-in-the-usa-uk-and-canada/

To travel to the Azores, I need to complete a Questionnaire. When I click on the link, I see the requirements but cannot find a link to a questionnaire? Where is the questionnaire link?

Hi Patrick! After clicking the link, you must select your airline at the bottom of the page and that will take you to the questionnaire after you fill in your flight information. Let me know if this works for you.

Can a person with dual nationality UK and Australian (holder of both passports) travel to Portugal?

In regard to COVID rules, travel from both the UK and Australia are allowed so if you are coming from those countries (or the list of accepted countries) you can travel to Portugal. If you are not asking about COVID restrictions, but rather visa rules, take a look at this article. https://www.portugal.com/travel/guide-to-portuguese-visas-types-of-portugal-visas/

If my vaccine is over the 270 days but i have had my booster am i classed as fully vaccinated?

I recommend checking the government’s official guidelines here https://www.visitportugal.com/en/content/covid-19-measures-implemented-portugal

Comng from USA to Portugal for visit June 18 to July 2, 2022. Passport expires Dec 10 2022. Have over 5 months after departure from Portugal, I believe I’m ok, correct??

Hi Jose! I believe so but contact your airline to be sure.

Hi lara I have completed my Vaccination 2 doses of Sinopharm from Pakistan and i have its QR code certificate also. I am planning to travel Portugal from Dubai but i can’t find my country Pakistan in given vaccination country list. What does it mean. Can’t I travel to Portugal using my vaccination certificate?

Hi Farfhan, I recommend contacting your airline.

Hi, I am due to enter Portugal by sea, early April, on a cruise ship, and can see that the rules are the same as for by air, however, the Passenger Locator Form does not seem really fit for the purpose by sea, as the questions ie flight number, seat number, where (hotel etc) are you staying are not fully applicable. Yes I can input the ship name, my cabin number, and my port of call, but it mentions that all questions are mandatory. Can you please advise what information I am required to complete in each field?

I recommend contacting your local Portuguese embassy as I cannot find the answer to your question. Sorry about that!

Lara If you have a Canadian passport but enter Portugal from South Africa via Frankfurt will they be alliwed in Portugal ?

Hi Annamie! I would recommend contacting a Portuguese embassy wherever you are located or your airline. For Portuguese embassies in Canada go here https://www.portugal.com/travel/portuguese-embassies-and-consulates-in-the-usa-uk-and-canada/

if I have a Croatia visa can I travel to Portugal

I would suggest contacting an embassy. However, since Croatia is not yet part of Schengen, Croatian visas do not give you the right to enter a Schengen country.

Hi Lara, great that you are replying to each and everyone. Do you have an updated version of those coming from Australia to Portugal? My sister lives in Melbourne and wishes to come and finally visit us in the Algarve, but we both cannot find a satisfactory and official answer. Muito obrigada!

Thank you! My understanding is that you can only travel from Australia to Portugal for “essential travel” right now, such as “to allow the entry into Portugal of citizens traveling for professional, study and family reunion purposes, and for health or humanitarian reasons”. Australia is not on the list of allowed essential travel. You can always check the government’s updates here:

We are entering Portugal via air on 4/8. We are fully vaccinated & boosted (and have our card). Do we still need COVID test to enter? If so, 48 or 72 hours before entering?

Check the travel requirements here https://www.visitportugal.com/en/content/covid-19-measures-implemented-portugal

We are traveling to Madeira from 13-20 April. My daughter’s passport expires in June. We are EU citizens/ Ireland passport holders. I understand passport validity requirements for EU citizens is up until return date. Does this apply to Madeira? Will we have any problems passing through customs/airport or with airline staff with her passport? Thank you.

Hi Francis! Since Madeira is fully integrated into the EU as an autonomous region of Portugal, the same rules apply. You are unlikely to have problems but maybe contact your airline if you are unsure.

We are from Singapore and planning to travel by land (bus) from Santiago De Compostela to Lisbon in May. May I know if also subject to ““essential travel” only? Please advise.

Technically, since you are coming from Spain, you are allowed in and no border control exists by land. This is still a loophole so I would recommend contacting the Portuguese authorities here so you are 100% sure you are in the clear https://eportugal.gov.pt/en/cidadaos-europeus-viajar-viver-e-fazer-negocios-em-portugal/viajar-para-portugal

Also, “it is mandatory to present the EU COVID Digital Certificate. Citizens who are not holders of the Digital Covid EU certificate in vaccination, test, or recovery modalities, will have to present proof of a negative RT-PCR test (TAAN), performed in the last 72 hours, or rapid antigen test (TRAg), performed in the last 24h.”

Hey I’m Traveling to Portugal from Armenia, do you know about covid restriction? do I need valid vaccine certification for 6 months? I want to enter to Portugal on May 1st and come bake to Armenia on May6, My vaccination 6 month will expire on May 12. Is it ok?

First, make sure you are going for “essential” travel as Armenia is not on the non-essential travel list. “Essential travel is defined as trips allowing the transit, entry into and departure from Portugal for professional purposes, study, family reunions, health and humanitarian reasons and under the reciprocity principle”.

About your vaccine, all should be good if your vaccine expires on May 12. However, make sure that you have your full vaccine schedule and all the doses completed. I recommend contacting the airline to make sure all is in order. You can also check out the official government website about COVID-19 restrictions here https://www.visitportugal.com/en/content/covid-19-measures-implemented-portugal

Hi, I’m travelling to mainland Portugal on 14th May ‘22 returning 21st May. My passport is 10 years old on 05/09/22 and expires on 05/02/23, I believe this is within the rules allowing me to travel? Regards Matt

So your passport will be 10 years old before you travel to Portugal? The passport needs to be less than 10 years old on the day you enter. The expiry date is fine, but the date of issue could be a problem. Contact your airline to clarify the issue.

Hi Lara, my passport won’t be 10 years old until 3 months after I return home from Portugal.

I return home 21 May 22, my passport is 10 years old on 5 September 22, I think this makes it ok?

Thanks Matt

My bad! Yes, then it should be fine. Safe travels 🙂

Thanks Lara

I am flying to Portugal from the Uk 22nd May, return on 25th May. I have a Spanish passport that expires 11th June. I cannot renew it as the Spanish consulate is on strike. Can I travel with it without 3 months validity as it is EU passport even though I’m travelling from UK?

I would not advise traveling without a valid passport. Even though they are on strike, you should call the Spanish embassy in the UK and ask whether they would consider issuing an emergency passport.

Thanks Lara. It will be valid for 2 weeks after I return. I know for EU citizens the rules are different and the passport juts has to be valid for the length of stay, as opposed to 3 months for UK citizens. The question really was which rules apply to me as I travelling from the UK. The Spanish embassy are only dealing with emergencies for Spaniards in the UK. Thank you for the response ☺️

Hi Jessica!

I would contact your airline as I am not sure. Sorry for not being able to help out more!

I am a Zambian national who lives in Cambodia, for 7 seven years now, working with UN. i want to travel to Portugal on 12 April to visit my daughter for 16 days only. I am fully vaccinated, with AstraZeneca 2 doses, Pfizer, 3rd dose. Am I allowed to enter Portugal?

Hi Florence! Check out this link to the official government travel restrictions https://www.visitportugal.com/en/content/covid-19-measures-implemented-portugal

If I just have a layover (in transit) in Portugal for a few hours, does my passport need to be valid for 6 months?

And the vaccination certificate from the USA is valid correct?

Hi Victoria,

I recommend contacting your airline. In theory, this should not be an issue, but if something happens and you need to leave the airport this could be a problem. A USA vaccination certificate is valid, yes.

I am sorry to ask this but it is a bit confusing and we really need to know. We are traveling from the USA, USA citizens, and going to Portugal. We are both vaccinated with a booster. Do we need to get a PCR or antigen test before we leave the USA? I have read that if vaccinated with a booster we do not need a test. Will Portugal accept our vaccination card from the USA? Thanks, Jim

If you have all your vaccines, you do not need to take a test. And yes, your US vaccination card is accepted. Check out this official link for this information https://www.visitportugal.com/en/content/covid-19-measures-implemented-portugal

I have the same question. The USA is not listed as a third country on that website.

The information on this is unclear so I would recommend contacting your airline.

I am a US citizen traveling from the US to Senegal for 5 days and then had plans to travel from Senegal to Portugal but am now concerned I will not be allowed entry because I am coming from Senegal. Is it only those with Senegalese passports who are not allowed entry or anyone traveling from Senegal. I am fully vaccinated and have a US vaccination card.

Hi! Senegal is not on the unessential travel list so you could be denied entry. If it’s for essential travel, you should be fine (i.e. to allow the entry into Portugal of citizens traveling for professional, study and family reunion purposes, and for health or humanitarian reasons). I recommend contacting your airline. Check out the official website https://www.visitportugal.com/en/content/covid-19-measures-implemented-portugal

Its good to know that you reply to everyone’s query !!! My question is : I have Portuguese PR card that allows me to travel to all EU countries but i have Pakistani Passport. Will i be allowed to enter Lisbon as i will be coming from Pakistan to Spain for 4 days then Lisbon for 2 days ??

Thank you! I advise you check the COVID travel restrictions before you travel. Currently, Pakistan is not on the non-essential travel list, but you should always check at the time of travel. Regarding your permanent residency status, you should contact the embassy.

My husband and I are traveling to Portugal from the US but will change planes in Munich. I’ve filled out a passenger locator form with information for the first leg of the trip but not the second, which actually gets us from Munich to Lisboa and there does not seem to be an option for that. So I’ve probably provided the wrong information. What now?

Hi Barbara,

I suggest contacting your airline with this question.

Hello Lara, My aunt and nephew, both Indian nationals are going to Edinburgh for a golf tournament after which they would like to visit us. Can they travel to Portugal? Thanks Pam

I do not see why not since they are traveling from the UK. However, it is mandatory to present: Mandatory to present: – A valid vaccination EU Digital COVID Certificate (with a complete vaccination schedule or with a complete vaccination schedule and a vaccine booster) – Or a valid test or recovery EU Digital COVID Certificate, – Or a valid vaccination certificate (with a complete vaccination schedule or a vaccine booster) or recovery certificate issued by a third country, under reciprocal conditions – Or a negative RT-PCR Test (or similar NAAT test) – 72h before boarding, or – Or a negative Laboratorial Rapid Antigen Test- 24h before boarding (according to the European Commission list)

Do check here if there vaccine is valid for entry. https://www.visitportugal.com/en/content/covid-19-measures-implemented-portugal

Will be travelling to Portugal from Malta soon. So PLF form is no longer required?

Nope, no longer required 🙂

Is there a QR code / Form necessary for US citizens entering Portugal? Is the CDC vaccination card an acceptable form of proof of vaccine? Thank you!

Hi we are going on a Douro River cruise in June 2023. My passport was issued August 2016 and expires May 2027. There will be under 10 years left when we travel. will entry be allowed, as I understand some airlines will not allow travel.

I recommend contacting your airline about your passport validity.

Hi my daughters has an irish passport we travel to Portugal in August 2022, her passport runs out April 2023 how can i find out if this is ok?

From what I read since they have an Irish passport, that validity is totally fine. On the Embassy of Ireland on Portugal’s website, it says that your Irish passport must be valid up to your return date. Check out the link here https://www.dfa.ie/irish-embassy/portugal/passports/top-passport-questions/passport-validity-needed-for-overseas-travel/

My brother and I are fully vaccinated Canadians (triple vaxxed) entering Portugal on May 4 to get to Spain. We return to Portugal on May 8 to catch our flight back to Canada.

Does Portugal accept Canadian Vaccination Certificates for entry? Or do we require Negative PCR or Lab Antigen tests?

I’m reading conflicting information on the web. It says Canada is not listed as an approved third party country issuing under reciprocal conditions.

Any information/clarity would be great!

Hi Ravinder,

I recommend contacting your airline as the information available on this is conflicting, as you have said.

hello, I am travelling back to Canada from Spain on May 1st with a transit in Portugal for a few hours. I am fully vaccinated with booster late November. 1. Do I still need an antigen test. My husband and kids (who travelled 3 days ago) said that has been lifted. Is that true? 2. do I still need to fill the passenger locator form for Portugal.

I dont have a travel agency to ask, is there a Portuguese site to answer these questions if you are not able to answer?

Thank you very much!

Check ou the official government website https://www.visitportugal.com/en/content/covid-19-measures-implemented-portugal

My husband and I will be traveling to Portugal later this month from the US. We are US citizens and have vaccination cards which show that we are fully vaccinated and boosted. Do we need to take an Antigen test 24 hours before we travel? Thank you.

Check out the official rules here https://www.visitportugal.com/en/content/covid-19-measures-implemented-portugal

Hello, we are hoping to travel to Portugal on 18th May. My friend will get his second vaccine today (4th May) around 12.00h, and we arrive into Portugal by air around 21.00h. So we arrive on the 14th day of his vaccine schedule, plus maybe nine hours. Will this be permitted for entry – it is technically just over 14 whole days, but we don’t want to be turned away at the airport? Many thanks for your help.

Please check out the official rules here https://www.visitportugal.com/en/content/covid-19-measures-implemented-portugal

Could you confirm how long a British passport needs to be valid for a visit to Madeira? The gov.uk website says it’s 3 months but I think I’ve been told 6 months in the past, so can you confirm the latest requirement?

I recommend contacting your airline

Hello. I am a US citizen.. traveling from US to Portugal (mainland). 9 June 22. I am fully vaccinated… have received three shots. My third shot was 6 months ago. I have a card from the CDC proving this information. Does this count as a valid vaccination certificate? I would tend to believe that the answer is ‘yes.’ I have an official card from the CDC verifying that I have had two vaccine shots plus a booster. However… the travel requirements are slightly confusing. I ask here to double check to see if I am correct. It would appear that I also need a valid vaccination EU Digital Covid Certificate. Am I correct? Thank you in advance.

or contact your airline 🙂

Hi, Lara, Thanks for answering so many questions. I did check the VisitPortugal site and it doesn’t say the USA is a reciprocal 3rd party unless I missed it? So anyone coming from the USA should get a test.

We fly into Warsaw for the night and then through Spain before Lisbon. We’ll will be right at 72 hours as our test is at 3pm on June 1 (losing 8 hours from USA time) when we land in Spain on June 4th at 2:35pm. I wonder if we’ll be ok with the airline Tap Portugal if we get to the gate a little after 3pm?

I recommend contacting your airline to make sure you will be fine 🙂

Hello Lara,

We are from USA, coming to Portugal from Switzerland through Spain. I see that Portugal is not reciprocal with US so we will need to take a test. For a different trip this year we used the Navica App from Abbott. This is a proctored covid test that is done over zoom and then you are provided with a QR code. will this work for Portugal or is there a specific test that is necessary?

I recommend contacting your airline or DGS to make sure this test is accepted.

Morning Lara i have just been on the website you recommend to check rules regarding travel from UK by air to see if we need PCR test but it says last updated 19th March?? the travel agent says they think? you still have to do one but someone we no who was there last week says they have stopped doing tests now and she wasnt asked for any tests is their a more up to date site we can check or phone

Hi Steve! The official website has been updated May 30 https://www.visitportugal.com/en/content/covid-19-measures-implemented-portugal

June 16, 2022. Will Portugal accept a Covid recovery letter from the USA?

Hi Michelle! Contact your airline because you might still need a covid 19 test.

Hi Lara, we are planning a trip to Lisbon next year on March 6, 2023 to March 16, 2023. My only concern is my daughter who will be 15 her passport expires on September 25, 2023, it is 6 months before expiration. Do I need to renew her passport?

It depends on your passport. I recommend contacting your airline.

We are travelling to Lisbon on July 8th. We get out boosters on Tuesday, which is 11 days before we arrive in Portugal. Will we have to provide a negative Covid test? The guidelines I have read so do not indicate how long before the booster considered valid.

Hi Christina,

Please contact your airline.

Hello Lara, my daughter is US national with Swiss residency card, we all leave in Switzerland (work permit B). We plan to go to Madeira for holidays July 2022, but noticed her passport expires in September 2022. Do you foresee any issue entering Portugal. Thank you,

btw, airline was not able to comment or provide more information.

Hi Anastasia, I recommend contacting your airline

Is the info about masks updated? Someone in a FB group wrote me that he returned from Lisbon a few days ago and he didn’t have to use a mask neither in taxis nor in flights.

You still have to wear a mask on flights and taxis, according to the SNS website, updated in early July. You can check out the mask rules here https://www.sns24.gov.pt/alerta/medidas-covid-19/

The latest update of that page from 29 August no longer requires masks in public transport.

To travel from Mexico is visa requiered to enter Portugal?

Hello! To travel to Portugal with a Mexican passport you do not need a visa (for up to 90 days). However, if you are unsure, you should always contact a Portuguese embassy.

Hey I’m planning to visit Portugal in octomber. Im nationality Georgian, East Europe. I hold just Georgian passport and visited couple times Germany with no problem. so my question is if I could get to Germany with no problem at all, will I be able to visit lisabon via tourist purposes?

You don’t need a visa to visit Portugal and you can stay up to 90 days visa-free.

Hi Lara, I am a Libyan leaving in Cardiff ,Wales/ UK And I have indefinite leave to remain. I am planing to travel to Djerba, Tunisia from Manchester through Lisbon, and my transit is a bit long it’s 20hr. I am not gonna leave the international airport area. My question is do I have to apply for a vise or I don’t need? Thanks a lot

Hi Shaban, Please contact your airline as they will advise you!

Hello What are passport requirements for entering Madeira from UK? I have read conflicting statements – some say valid for at least 3 months after the date you intend to leave the EU country you are visiting and some say valid for at least 6 months after the date you intend to leave the EU country you are visiting, Could you clarify current situation please. Thank you

Hi Terry, I recommend contacting your airline.

I’m a Ghanaian national with a UK resident card transiting through Portugal to Ghana. Please i would like to know if I’ll need a transit visa to transit through Portugal to Ghana. Thank you.

Hi Sandra, I recommend contacting a Portuguese embassy to address your question.

Hi Lara, we are visiting from the US in March. I have two children under the age of 3 traveling and we are getting their passports this week. It takes about 3-4 months to get the passports and I just read they must be valid for over 6 months to enter Portugal. Will it be an issue that my children’s passports will be less than that? Thank you!

Hi Courtney,

The children’s passports must have at least 6 months of validity in terms of their expiry date. If they travel with brand new passports this is fine.

I come from Hong Kong. Both my citizen card and Portugal passport expired. Can I go to Portugal with my Hong Kong SAR Passport? And then renew my expired citizen card and passport, can it be done?

Hi Stella, Without Portuguese documents you would technically need a tourist visa to visit Portugal (for up to 90 days). However, I would recommend contacting a Portuguese embassy about your case.

This web page says 6 months validity on passport from date of departure. The US Portugal Embassy website says three months. Which is correct?

Hi Robin, It depends on your nationality, but it is only three months for US passports.

Hey I have a silly question. So my husband is Portuguese and he wants to travel back home to Portugal. But his Portuguese passport is not valid. When he leaves Canada to go to Portugal does he need his valid Portuguese passport to travel or can he travel with an expired passport? He has an Portuguese identification card. Is that enough? He does not have a Canadian passport he will be travelling with a PR card to come back.

Hello! Not a silly question. From my understanding, he would need a valid passport, the Portuguese identification card is only valid within the European Union.

I have a US Green card and hold an Indian passport. I plan on visiting Morocco from US and there is a stopover in Lisbon both ways. Do I need a transit visa in Lisbon?

Hi Evita! It’s best to check with a Portuguese embassy or airline.

Hello, still wondering if US Passports are ok with the 3 months from date of departure?

Hi Katie, for US passports its 3 months.

New travel to Portugal rules now in force

By TPN/Lusa, in Tourism , COVID-19 , Portugal · 07 Feb 2022, 10:09 · 10 Comments

u.s. travel to portugal covid 19

Now, to enter the country, “only the presentation of the Covid Digital Certificate of the European Union in its three modalities or other duly recognised proof of vaccination is now required”, according to the office of the Minister of the Presidency.

The Council of Ministers also approved changes regarding the Covid digital certificate and adjustments to proof of vaccination to be presented for access to certain establishments.

Now, the digital certificate requires that rapid antigen tests be performed within the previous 24 hours, instead of the 48-hour deadline, and in the case of a molecular nucleic acid amplification test (TAAN), the deadline is 72 hours.

Regarding vaccination, the Covid-19 digital certificate now attests to the completion of the primary vaccination programme for more than 14 days and less than 270 days since the last dose, or the booster dose.

The rules regarding the recovery certificate remain unchanged.

Does the acceptance of a EU Covid test certificate for entry to PT apply to UK ones as well

By RICHARD MCKENZIE from UK on 07 Feb 2022, 15:30

The detail on the third line of the first paragraph appears to be incorrect and misleading. It is inconsistent with the rules given on the official Visit Portugal website. Your article says UK citizens can enter with just proof of vaccination but in reality it would appear you still need a negative test or a recovery certificate?

By Alan Booth from Algarve on 07 Feb 2022, 15:43

What time on 7th because my husband came back from the UK today and they were still issuing fined

By Linda from Porto on 07 Feb 2022, 16:18

Once again, this applies only to EU (and recognized third countries). It does NOT apply to North America and the rest of the world. Your article does not indicate this important fact.

By David White from USA on 07 Feb 2022, 16:50

I’m still waiting for someone to explain why vaccinated travellers, who can still contract and transmit the virus, are allowed to enter without testing. Why are they free to spread it? This is discrimination purely to coerce people who do not want to be vaccinated to get injected.

By SS from Algarve on 07 Feb 2022, 19:43

We are a bit confused, Fly on Monday the 21st my second dose was in September and had my booster today. My Wife had second dose in April and also having booster today. that takes us over the 14 days by one/two days! our 13 year old has had no vaccinations for medical reasons we decided it wasn't worth the risk..... Still don't know who has to test prior who can get into venues! We would like to eat in local restaurants as I'm sure they need the business after the last 2 years, rather than just go to Lidl and eat from Apartment

By Stephen from UK on 08 Feb 2022, 12:09

Would you kindly published a corrected version of this story as it is very confusing/inaccurate. It suggests that a test is not needed and then goes on to say that it is. The Visitportugal website suggests that a valid Vaccination Certificate or Test Certificate or Recovery Certificate. The use of "or" appears to indicate that only one of of these options is required. The statement "Or a valid vaccination or recovery certificate issued by a third country, under reciprocal conditions" and listing several countries including UK suggests the NHS vaccine passport is acceptable. Allowing fully vaccinated travellers into Portugal without a test means that Portugal and the EU has moved on. It is a decisive action that it is now time to live with Covid (as per colds, Flu and other viruses).

By Paolito from Algarve on 08 Feb 2022, 13:12

Could this Newspaper please call the Government and update this article. Some of the information does not match what the official rules state. Also check for North American traveler requirements and UK. Do we test or not if vaccinated and current? Will a USA CDC Vac Card Paper form work?

By Bob Jay from Lisbon on 08 Feb 2022, 15:08

UK fully vaccinated residents can enter Portugal without a test as long as they are fully vaccinated and can show their certificate and complete the Passenger Locator Card online BEFORE check in at the airport as you will be asked for this. The gov uk website has this information https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/portugal/entry-requirements

By Margo from Porto on 08 Feb 2022, 15:55

Suddenly as of 12 February 2022, fully vaccinated Canadians can no longer enter mainland Portugal except for "essential travel". This happened 3 days before we were to depart for the Algarve for 6 weeks vacation; we had to cancel all our plans and bookings? Why are Canadians banned?

Portugal is the latest European country to reopen its borders US travelers this summer.

The US Embassy in Portugal advises that from today (June 15), non-essential travel from the US to mainland Portugal is permitted for travelers with proof of a negative COVID-19 test result.

Visitors are required to submit a negative COVID PCR result from a test taken no more than 72 hours before traveling, or a rapid antigen test performed within 24 hours of boarding. Children under the age of two are exempt. You can find out more about testing requirements  here .

Economy Minister Pedro Siza Viera suggested last week that vaccinated travelers from the US could potentially visit Portugal, provided they show proof of vaccination. However, in this latest travel update, test exemptions for vaccinated travelers have not been set. The rules will be reviewed in two weeks' time on June 27.

As Portugal opens to American tourists, the UK recently reintroduced quarantine restrictions on travelers returning from Portugal, which Reuters reports, will be a big blow to the country's tourism sector as Britain is one of Portugal's largest foreign tourism markets.

Lifting restrictions for Americans will be a last-ditch attempt by the country to avoid another catastrophic blow to the country's GDP. According to Reuters , 1.2 million tourists from the US visited Portugal in 2019. That number dipped to 135,229 in 2020.

I Traveled to Portugal During the Coronavirus Pandemic — Here’s What It Was Really Like

From QR codes to new cleaning procedures and test requirements, here’s what I encountered while visiting Portugal amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

For U.S. travelers fantasizing about a vacation in Portugal , it might be some time before that dream becomes a reality, as the country remains off-limits to Americans seeking nonessential travel.

But what I can tell you is that Portugal seems to have a head start for if and when that time comes. I can say this from experience as I witnessed firsthand how public health and safety policies are being implemented — not only for the well-being of travelers, but also for hospitality workers and locals.

While American tourists can’t visit Portugal now, I was permitted to travel there through a business exemption — as a journalist to observe and report on how Portuguese tourism was coping and getting ready for reopening. I flew on TAP Air Portugal’s new nonstop route from Boston to Ponta Delgada, which ceased for the winter and will recommence in the spring. I traveled with Azores Getaways, first to São Miguel Island and Terceira Island in the Azores , and then for an overnight in Lisbon .

11 Bucket List-worthy International Vacations That Are Surprisingly Affordable

To enter the Azores, Americans must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test taken 72 hours before departure. Scheduling two tests — the second, a backup — I bought travel insurance with coronavirus-related coverage , a ton of masks, and as much hand sanitizer as TSA sizing requirements would allow. I also prepared letters in English and Portuguese, explaining that I was to see how officials were responding to the coronavirus pandemic.

My homework also included me uploading a Risk Assessment and Early Detection of SARS-CoV-2 questionnaire to receive a form with an identifying QR code that I had to bring along.

My prepping was paired with reading about Turismo de Portugal ’s Clean & Safe program , which awards a yearlong stamp of approval to tourism, hospitality, and entertainment businesses, including TAP, complying with COVID-19-related hygiene and cleaning requirements. (Portugal was among the first destinations to be awarded with World Travel & Tourism Council's "Safe Travels" endorsement in May.)

After having my temperature and test results checked at the airport gate before boarding, I was given an antibacterial wipe packet on the way to my seat. We were required to wear face masks during the flight, with the exception of during dinner. Plus, TAP’s fleet of new Airbus Neo aircrafts feature HEPA filters that clean the air several times a minute.

Exiting João Paulo II Airport on São Miguel Island seemed almost post-apocalyptic. Hazmat suit-wearing workers directed us along a line similar to customs across from open-facing container workspaces. As I went along what I assumed was the line for negative test holders, I was directed to a counter, where I presented my paperwork to an official. I answered some questions, signed a document, and got the nod plus a slip of paper that permitted me to enter Terceira Island in a few days. The process was efficient, taking no more than 20 minutes.

At the Hotel Marina Atlântico , I encountered plexiglass windows installed between guests and the reception desk, and hand sanitizer bottles and stations throughout the common areas. A fixed seal on my room door indicated that it was cleaned and no one had been inside since then; I would tear it upon entry. Inside my room, I noticed the TV remote was placed in a bag, as it can get pretty germy.

In the hotel restaurant, as I would come across at other properties, masked waitstaff provided paper placemats with QR codes for bringing up menus on our phones, as well as cutlery sealed in bags.

At the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel in Furnas, the check-in process was shorter. Instead of reciting information on amenities at the desk, reception called guests in their rooms to provide details. Two housekeeping teams handled room cleaning — one removed everything after checkout, the other cleaned and sanitized. And in the restaurant, diners received a bag to store their face masks when eating — a much-appreciated gesture, especially since mine often ends up smashed in my pocket or purse.

The Terceira Mar Hotel had similar safeguards, plus a dropbox at the reception desk for sanitizing keys after checkout.

In Portugal, tourist attractions were open, but remained quiet, especially during the week when I visited. From Pico Do Carvão and Caldeira das Sete Cidades on São Miguel to Terceira Island’s Algar do Carvão and Gruta do Natal, I felt like we had the place to ourselves.

At restaurants, diners seemed comfortable eating indoors, as I had noticed one morning at Quinta dos Açores and night at Taberna do Teatro on Terceira. (Right now, only five diners can sit at an indoor table; cafes and bars close between 8 and 11 p.m., restaurants by 1 a.m. ).

In Lisbon, I found a varying amount of people out and about on a Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Praça do Comércio was nearly empty, Time Out Market Lisboa was semi-vacant, and the crowds at Avenida da Liberdade were scant. Portugal’s government has started requiring masks in busy outdoor spots .

At Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa , the property went from offering their popular breakfast buffet to sit-down meal service, and to cleaning commonly used surfaces and objects several times a day. The hotel reopened on July 31 after shutting down in late March.

Currently, guests are mainly traveling from Europe, according to Joana Jeunehomme, regional director of public relations for Minor Hotels Portugal, which includes Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa. She notes that public awareness on what’s being done to keep and make people feel safe, from temperature checks to sanitization practices, is key to tourism recovery.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first time in Portugal, but as a traveler, I will likely wait until further research advancements to return. As public health regulations and travel policies continue to change, so will our planning.

It’s crucial to follow updates on government websites and news reports before booking a trip. According to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center , Portugal has reported over 160,000 COVID-19 cases and over 2,700 deaths.

With a final temperature check in Portugal, at the gate for my TAP flight from Lisbon to Newark, I wiped down my airplane seat area with peace of mind . Now, it’s onto quarantining and a follow-up test.

Entry Requirements for Portugal COVID

Portuguese immigration authorities implemented COVID-related entry restrictions during the pandemic , as did most countries in the world. The travel restrictions were standard precautions during the health crises and helped the Portuguese government to control COVID-19 cases and keep the territory safe for locals and tourists.

But in 2022, countries are leaving the COVID-19 restrictions. For example, since May 3, 2022, the Portugal Passenger Locator Card is no longer necessary to visit the country. Still, travelers wonder: What is still required to enter Portugal?

Do Portuguese Health Authorities request negative test results on arrival? Is it necessary to present proof of vaccination?

This article will provide further information about the current requirements for local authorities related to COVID-19 and what documents you need to get to travel to Portugal .

Frequently Asked Questions

Portugal covid entry requirements: what are the entry requirements for portugal during covid.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Portuguese law included some requirements for visitors. On arrival, it was necessary to submit a Portugal Passenger Locator Card online, presenting a negative COVID-19 PCR, or proof of vaccination and antigen test. But the Portuguese authorities no longer have COVID-19 restrictions .

DO I NEED A COVID-19 VACCINE OR VACCINATION CERTIFICATE TO ENTER PORTUGAL?

No, you don't. Today, COVID-19 vaccine certificates are not mandatory to enter Portugal . You don't need to present proof of vaccination or present a valid recovery certificate.

But, if you are fully vaccinated as an EU Digital COVID Certificate holder, it's a good idea to carry it on a Eurotrip. Other European countries may still ask for a vaccination certificate.

DO I NEED TO PRESENT A NEGATIVE PCR TEST RESULT BEFORE TRAVELING TO PORTUGAL?

No, you don't. COVID-19 testing is no longer included in the national measures . When entering Portugal, you have to present neither PCR nor antigen test since there are no longer testing requirements.

However, for foreign visitors who want to take the Covid-19 test, it is possible to do so at any time in mainland Portugal or Madeira:

  • At the Airport .
  • At the Laboratories approved by the Portuguese Health General Directorate.
  • Available testing points in the Algarve.

DO I HAVE TO QUARANTINE ONCE I ARRIVE IN PORTUGAL?

No, you don't. There are no quarantine requirements in the islands or mainland Portugal. Wearing face masks and presenting test results are no longer required.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS: DO I NEED A PORTUGAL PASSENGER LOCATOR FORM?

The European Union countries developed a series of documents to track travelers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, the Portugal Passenger Form was a mandatory document to enter the islands or mainland Portugal during the health crisis. But since the country left the COVID-19 restrictions, the form is no longer necessary . According to the current local laws, the ETIAS is the only document you need to worry about to enjoy Portugal's tourist attractions.

DO I NEED A VISA TO TRAVEL TO PORTUGAL?

Most countries were exempt from visa requirements to travel to this EU country. However, the ETIAS Visa Waiver will go into effect by the end of 2022 and will be a mandatory document to visit Portugal, as in other Schengen countries.

The ETIAS visa waiver for Portugal is expected to work similarly to the ESTA system currently in place for the United States. The document will allow eligible passport holders to visit Portugal and the European Union without getting a visa from the nearest Portuguese embassy.

The entire process will be online, so you can count on iVisa services for a simple and quick application.

WHAT ARE THE DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE ETIAS PORTUGAL?

Before packing your personal belongings, you must apply for the ETIAS Portugal from November 2022 onwards. But it's easy to obtain this new travel document. All you need to provide is the following:

  • A passport from an authorized-issuing country with passport validity of at least three months from the date of arrival in Portugal.
  • Payment method (credit or debit) to pay the ETIAS fee.
  • A current email address to receive the approved ETIAS to enter Portugal.

WHAT IS THE INFORMATION REQUESTED DURING THE ETIAS APPLICATION?

The Schengen member countries developed this document thinking about border security . So you have to provide some personal information while filling out the ETIAS online form. You will be asked to complete different sections depending on the country of citizenship you have chosen.

As a result, you may be asked to provide the following:

  • Biometric or passport details such as your first and last name
  • First European Union country you wish to visit
  • Education and work experience
  • Eligibility and background information, such as medical insurance, travel to countries at war, countries from which you have been deported or denied entry, and criminal record.

WHAT IS THE PORTUGAL GOLDEN VISA PROGRAM?

The Government of Portugal created the Portugal Golden Visa for non-EU nationals who make significant investments in the Portuguese economy , such as purchasing real estate, making capital investments, or creating jobs. This visa is valid for six years, so you can become eligible for Portuguese citizenship via the visa program. The document can be extended from the parent or legal guardian to the children and other family members under family reunification.

The Golden Visa intends to attract investors from around the world and boost the country's economy by making a positive economic impact on the country. More than 10,000 Golden Visas have been issued since the program began in October 2012, making the initiative one of the world's most popular investment-based residency visa programs.

IS IVISA A RELIABLE PLATFORM FOR GETTING MY TRAVEL DOCUMENTS?

A COVID-19 wave has surged in all US regions. Know the symptoms and new variant

Portrait of Janet Loehrke

The U.S. is experiencing its largest wave in COVID-19 cases since January.

To help public health experts stop outbreaks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to test wastewater, which acts as an early warning system for outbreaks.

Wastewater sample data shows a regional trend of COVID-19 is significantly growing. Right now, the KP.3.1.1 variant makes up nearly 37% of the cases; its related strain KP.3 follows at 17%, according to CDC data . Data collected late last week by the CDC showed that 32 states have reported "very high" levels of wastewater viral activity nationwide.

COVID-19 wastewater monitoring by region

Even in cases when a community's residents are not showing symptoms, it is possible to test wastewater for the presence of infectious diseases. The data from the CDC can detect possible changes in the levels of illnesses in your region.

Certain regions have been more severely affected than others. Western states have had the most reported cases, followed by the South.

States face COVID-19 late-summer surge

The CDC estimates that COVID-19 infections will grow or likely grow in 25 states, decline or likely decline in five states, and remain stable in 17 states.

"At this point, COVID-19 can be described as endemic throughout the world," Aron Hall, deputy director for science at the CDC's coronavirus and other respiratory viruses division, told NPR in an interview.

CDC's projected COVID-19 growth status by state:

When is a disease endemic, epidemic or a pandemic?

There's a new dominant COVID-19 variant: FLirT

The COVID-19 virus continues to be a notorious shape-shifter.

Today there are more than 26 variants of the original COVID-19 strain. The newest variant, FLirT, includes KP.3, KP.3.1.1. and KP.2 Since early spring, these strains have been the fastest-growing omicron subvariants circulating in all U.S. regions.

Symptoms of COVID-19

A breakdown of possible symptoms:

The FLirT variant symptoms are typically milder than past variants from the pandemic, which include fever, coughing, exhaustion and loss of smell or taste, according the Johns Hopkins University . On the CDC's website , symptoms can range in severity from mild to severe and can appear two to 14 days after a viral exposure.

The Algarve

Douro valley, peneda-geres national park.

First-time visitors will want to add Portugal's capital city to the top of their bucket list. Travelers flock to Lisbon from all over the world to revel in its soulful Fado music, marvel at its colorful azulejo tiles and stroll through its historic Alfama district. Get your hands on a pastel de nata, Lisbon's beloved custard tart, then spend the rest of your day visiting top sights like the Bélem Tower, São Jorge Castle and the Jerónimos Monastery. If you need a break from trudging up and down Lisbon's steep hills, take the city's iconic Tram 28 to one of the city's famed overlooks, called miradouros.

This picturesque region in southern Portugal includes roughly 100 miles of golden Atlantic Ocean coastline, so it comes as no surprise that it boasts some of Portugal's best beaches . It's tempting to spend your whole trip lounging on shorelines like Praia da Falésia and Praia da Marinha, but if you can tear yourself away from the sand, you'll find that sampling fresh seafood in fishing towns like Olhão and wandering vibrant resort areas like Lagos and Albufeira is just as worthwhile. But if you're seeking a truly one-of-a-kind experience, make time for a boat tour to the spectacular Benagil Sea Cave.

Known for its port dessert wine, this coastal city in northwest Portugal is an excellent destination for oenophiles who want to spend their vacation sampling vino from Porto's many wine cellars. But there is more to this scenic metropolis than wine. As Portugal's second-largest city, Porto offers a range of attractions to explore, including the Porto Cathedral, Crystal Palace Gardens and sprawling Porto City Park. Don't leave without taking in the view of the Douro River from the Dom Luís I Bridge and perusing the titles on display at Livraria Lello, one of the world's most beautiful bookstores and the rumored inspiration behind several " Harry Potter " set designs.

From emerald-green forests to black sand beaches to natural rock pools, it's easy to see why this group of nine volcanic islands roughly 1,000 miles off the coast of mainland Portugal is called the Hawaii of Europe. Newcomers should head to the archipelago's largest island, São Miguel, where they can wander the historic city of Ponta Delgada, explore Terra Nostra Park's botanical garden and admire unique twin lakes at Sete Cidades. The Azores are also known for their year-round whale-watching opportunities, and you can't miss a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage town of Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira Island.

Although Sintra sits less than 20 miles northwest of Lisbon, it may as well be worlds away. Set amid the rolling Sintra Mountains, this UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once a getaway for Portuguese nobility is today known for its magnificent castles, including the National Palace of Pena and Quinta da Regaleira. The best way to see Sintra is on a full-day tour from Lisbon, as driving the area's winding roads can be harrowing and you'll learn more history from an experienced guide (plus, many tour providers offer skip-the-line options). Choose a tour that stops in the nearby town of Cascais to wander its charming old town and lounge on its idyllic beaches.

Photos of Madeira's stunning scenery (think: lush greenery, rushing waterfalls and rugged coastlines) don't do justice to this four-island archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa – you'll just have to experience it for yourself. Head to Madeira's capital, Funchal, to knock top attractions like the Monte Palace Madeira, Madeira Botanical Gardens and Mercado dos Lavradores, a popular farmer's market, off your to-do list. Spend whatever vacation hours you have left hiking Madeira's famous irrigation channels, called levadas, and sipping Madeira wine. Just don't leave without going for a dip in Porto Moniz's incredible seaside swimming pools, which are naturally filled with seawater.

u.s. travel to portugal covid 19

Yet another destination on this list known for its wine production, Portugal's Douro Valley was made for travelers who want to slow down and smell the rosé. The whole region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, prized for its unique terraced vineyards, charming villages and gorgeous landscape. Revel in the valley's beauty on a scenic train ride or a boat tour of the Douro River, then visit a historic quinta (wine estate) for a port tasting. No trip would be complete without visiting Peso da Régua's Douro Museum and viewing Paleolithic rock art at the Côa Valley Archaeological Park.

Travelers will be spoiled for choice in this Portuguese city approximately 30 miles southeast of Lisbon. Not only does Setúbal feature a mix of green spaces (like Arrábida Natural Park) and sandy beaches (like Praia da Figueirinha and Praia dos Galapinhos), but it is also one of the country's most important ports. You'll want to pencil in time to tour several historic attractions, including the Fort of São Filipe and the Palmela Castle, as well as browse the stalls of Mercado do Livramento, Setúbal's indoor fish market. And if watching animals in their natural habitat appeals to you, book a dolphin-watching tour of the Sado River.

Who needs more than one national park when you have Peneda-Geres? Despite being the country's sole national park, this 270-square-mile piece of wilderness in northern Portugal has a lot to offer, from ancient forests to valleys to cascading waterfalls. Spend your day observing the park's ample wildlife, which includes mammals like wolves and wild ponies, and hiking to glassy lagoons. You'll also want to visit the granite granaries in historic villages like Soajo and Lindoso and walk along the park's well-preserved Geira Roman Road.

u.s. travel to portugal covid 19

Revered among surfers for its massive swells, this town 75 miles north of Lisbon is sure to impress. Watch professional surfers ride some of the largest waves in the world at legendary Praia do Norte – the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo is said to offer the best views – or spend the day lounging at the tamer Praia da Nazaré. Beyond the beach, Nazaré is a quaint town that cherishes its local customs, as seen in the traditional costumes still worn by some residents. Other must-do activities here include riding the funicular to the cliffside Sítio district and sampling Nazaré's delectable seafood.

As the birthplace of Portugal's first king, Alfonso I, Guimarães appeals to history buffs who want to learn more about the country's medieval past. Begin with a visit to the well-preserved Guimarães Castle, then head to the impressive Palace of the Dukes of Bragança to admire its collection of tapestries, ceramics and furniture. You'll also want to set aside time for exploring the narrow, winding streets of Guimarães' UNESCO-listed historic center, which is lined with cafes and charming plazas. Before you leave, take a cable car to the top of Penha Mountain for postcard-worthy views of the city.

Encircled by medieval walls, this town about 50 miles north of Lisbon is straight out of a dream. Óbidos' charm lies in its whitewashed architecture, cobblestone streets and purple bougainvillea flowers. Stroll down Rua Direita, Óbidos' main street, to browse shops and cafes, or snap a photo of the town's colorful azulejos at Porta da Vila (the town gate). The Óbidos Castle is another must-visit, and you can walk the battlements for panoramic vistas. Meanwhile, travelers with a sweet tooth will want to visit during the town's International Chocolate Festival, which occurs in the spring.

Home to one of Europe's oldest universities, the University of Coimbra, this historic city in central Portugal is characterized by its lively student population and rich cultural heritage. Arrange a visit to the university's hilltop campus, which is a dedicated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and tour popular sights like the Santa Cruz Church, St. Michael's Chapel and the Royal Palace. You'll also want to check out the Machado de Castro National Museum and, if you're craving a piece of nature, Coimbra's botanical garden features several rare plant species, a greenhouse and an aqueduct.

Called "the Venice of Portugal" for its network of scenic canals, this colorful city 45 miles south of Porto on the country's west coast should be on your radar. Travelers should start with a canal cruise on one of the city's traditional moliceiro boats to get a feel for the city, then spend the rest of the day exploring the Aveiro Cathedral and the Museum of Aveiro. When you've toured as many of Aveiro's historic sights as you can, pack a hat and some sunscreen for a tranquil day on nearby Costa Nova beach, known for its iconic striped houses, called palheiros.

Dating back to 16 B.C., this city roughly 35 miles northeast of Porto is one of the oldest cities in Portugal. As one of the world's first Catholic cities, Braga is a popular pilgrimage site for its Bom Jesus do Monte, a UNESCO-listed sanctuary. The city's historic center is home to other religious sites like the Sé de Braga cathedral and Igreja de Santa Cruz. Other can't-miss attractions include the Santa Barbara Garden and Praça da República, a public square lined with cafes and restaurants.

After three shepherd children reportedly saw apparitions of the Virgin Mary here in 1917, this town in central Portugal has become one of the country's most important Catholic pilgrimage sites. The biggest draw is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima, a large complex that is home to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Chapel of Apparitions and the Basilica of the Holy Trinity.  Though some devout religious travelers arrive on foot via one of the four Fátima Ways (pilgrimage paths from Lisbon, Coimbra, Nazare and Porto), a stop in Fátima is also included on many organized tours from Lisbon.

Is Lisbon Safe for Travel in 2024?

Updated September 19, 2023

In normal circumstances, Lisbon is absolutely safe for travel. Portugal’s colorful capital city is a great place to visit! With the help of some locals, we created this guide to safety in Lisbon. It covers everything from the coronavirus to tips for solo travelers.

Lisbon and the COVID-19 Pandemic

“When can I travel to Lisbon?” This is a common question about Portugal these days. Given the coronavirus pandemic, when will Portugal be safe to visit? Can travelers even go to Portugal right now?

Here's the latest:

Americans can travel to Portugal! There are no entry requirements, it’s almost like pre-COVID travel. The CDC recommends making sure you’re up-to-date with the COVID vaccine before travel, but it’s not required to visit Portugal. As for masks, they are only required in healthcare settings.

Safety in Lisbon

Tram Is Lisbon Safe

Locals tell us that Lisbon is a lovely place to visit in Portugal. The colorful capital city offers a wealth of great restaurants, fun activities, and easy day trips. Lisbon is also pretty safe—although, since it’s a big city, locals say there are some things to keep in mind.

All in all, Portugal is a safe place to visit. Follow a few common-sense safety rules and you should be fine!

Common scams in Lisbon

Generally, Portugal is very safe. But locals tell us there are some scams you should be aware of in the capital city:

  • Petition scam: If someone approaches you with a petition to sign, you’re best off ignoring them. If you engage, they’ll try to pick your pockets. The petition scam is common throughout Europe
  • Taxis with “broken” meters” : Although transportation in Portugal is safe, be cautious about taking taxis. If the driver says the meter is broken, you’ll likely end up paying more than normal.
  • Be careful on the tram : Speaking of transportation...it’s fun to hop on one of Lisbon’s cherry yellow trams, but keep a sharp eye on your belongings. Pickpockets are known to target tourists here.
  • Appetizers at restaurants : This is not a scam, but keep in mind that if a waiter places bread on your table you’ll have to pay for it. (If you go to a restaurant where there are no prices on the menu, that is likely a scam.)

All in all, Lisbon is a safe place to visit. As long as you stay aware of your surroundings and use common sense, you should be ok.

Is Lisbon safe for solo travelers?

Solo Travel Is Lisbon Safe

Portugal is a safe destination for solo travelers! And Lisbon is an especially wonderful place to explore. Locals note that anyone traveling alone in Lisbon should:

  • Keep an eye on your drink: Just as you would at home, keep an eye on your drink. If someone offers to buy you a drink, make sure you see it made.
  • Stay with the crowds : Once the party ends, don’t wander off by yourself. Stay in well-lit, well-populated areas of the city, especially at night.
  • Avoid certain neighborhoods : You may want to avoid certain neighborhoods in Lisbon, like Intendente and Anjos. Metro stations in this neighborhood have a reputation for being unsafe at night.

Important Portuguese phrases

No matter where you stay in Portugal, it’s good to know a few words in Portuguese. Locals tell us that these basics are a good start:

  • Por favor - Please
  • Obrigado - Thank you
  • De nada - You’re welcome
  • Bom Dia - Good morning
  • Com licença - Excuse me
  • Onde está - Where is the…

The mpox strain spreading now is different from the one in 2022: Here's what to know

The World Health Organization’s decision to declare mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years may seem like déjà vu — but there are key differences between the strain that’s causing international concern now and the one that spread in 2022.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral infection characterized by painful lesions. It’s spread by direct contact with an infected person, animal or contaminated items like clothing or bedding.

The virus is classified into two distinct groups: clade I and clade II.

Clade II was responsible for the 2022 outbreak, which has led to around 100,000 cases worldwide .

But now, a version of clade I has spread internationally. The outbreak started in January 2023 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and has since reached 12 other countries in the region.

On Thursday, Sweden confirmed the first known infection of clade I outside Africa , though Swedish health officials said the person was infected while spending time in Africa. Health authorities in Pakistan also confirmed a case of mpox on Friday but have not identified the strain yet.

Clade I is more transmissible than clade II and capable of being more severe, so infectious disease experts are concerned about further international spread.

“We should have learned a lesson from 2022 that an infection anywhere is potentially an infection everywhere,” said Anne Rimoin, an epidemiology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles Fielding School of Public Health.

How does this version of mpox spread?

Mpox has historically spread in a few ways. The first is through close, personal contact with an infected person, such as skin-to-skin contact with rashes or with saliva or mucus. The second is via contact with contaminated materials. And the third is contact with infected animals: hunting, trapping or cooking them, touching sick rodents or getting bitten or scratched.

In 2022, the version of clade II that spread globally, dubbed clade IIb, was passed primarily through sexual contact, particularly among men who have sex with men.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo recently, clade Ib has also been spreading through sexual contact among female sex workers and men who have sex with men. Research that hasn’t yet been published or peer reviewed linked an outbreak in an eastern mining town in Congo to professional sex work in bars.

But that’s not the only way the virus is being transmitted. Dr. Stuart Isaacs, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, said much of the spread of clade I could be due to exposure to animals and transmission within households, but limited surveillance in the regions where the virus is make it difficult to know for sure.

Isaacs said there’s early evidence that clade Ib has certain “properties that are allowing it to spread more readily person to person.”

How severe are the recent cases?

In the past, outbreaks of clade I have been deadlier than clade 2, killing up to 10% of people who got sick . But more recent outbreaks have had lower death rates. Out of an estimated 22,000 cases in this outbreak in Congo , more than 1,200 people have died — which puts the fatality rate at just above 5%.

By comparison, clade II outbreaks in Africa have generally had a mortality rate of around 1%, and just 0.2% of cases linked to the 2022 global outbreak were fatal.

Rimoin said the disease’s severity “can have less to do with the actual clade and more to do with route of transmission, the immune system of the individual, the source of the infection.”

The threat in the U.S. could be milder than in Africa, according to Marc Siegel, an associate professor of medicine at the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

“The underlying health conditions of the population in the DRC are probably contributing to the current case fatality rate,” he said, using the acronym for the Democratic Republic of Congo. “With less malnutrition and better access to health care resources, I would imagine that the case fatality rate will not be as high as we’re seeing in the DRC.”

Vaccines for mpox are also widely available in the U.S., following a major rollout effort in 2022. Two doses of the mpox vaccine or a previous clade II infection should protect against severe illness from clade I, the Department of Health and Human Service said Wednesday.

Do mpox symptoms differ between the clades?

Symptoms of the two mpox clades can be difficult to distinguish from each other.

The illness generally starts with a rash that progresses to small bumps on the skin, followed by blisters that fill with whitish fluid — a hallmark of the disease — and eventually scab over. People may also experience a fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy and swollen lymph nodes.

These symptoms often disappear on their own within a few weeks. But in severe cases, people may develop larger, more widespread lesions, secondary bacterial infections, pneumonia, heart inflammation or swelling of the brain. Immunocompromised people may develop atypical symptoms and have a greater risk of hospitalization and death.

Historically, mpox lesions have tended to appear on the face, chest, palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. But during the 2022 outbreak, people frequently developed lesions around the genital and anal region or inside the mouth and throat, presumably because of how the virus was spreading at the time . The lesions were also fewer in number and less pronounced overall.

Some cases of this nature have also been detected in the current outbreak in Congo.

“There is talk that there are more people that have lesions around the genitals this time around than previous clade I outbreaks,” said Amira Albert Roess, a professor of global health and epidemiology at George Mason University. “It’s going to take us some time to really understand what may be going on here.”
