A Corregidor Island tour in Manila

Not just one of the most important things to see in Manila, Corregidor Island is also one of the most important historical military sites in Asia.

As a tourist, it's possible to visit Corregidor Island, but you need to do a bit of planning to join one of the Corregidor Island tours. To help, I've put together this information.

Control this island, you control Manila. It’s a maxim that explains why Corregidor Island has always been considered so important – and why it was the scene of such heavy fighting in the Second World War, as the Japanese advanced on the Philippines.

Even when the soldiers knew the end was upon them, they never gave up. This small island had held out against some of the most determined attackers, against all odds. The soldiers had every reason to be proud and so they fought on.

The date was May 6, 1942 and it was the Americans (with the help of the Filipinos) who were fighting to protect Corregidor Island this time. I say ‘this time’ because Corregidor has changed hands many times over the centuries.

Why is Corregidor Island so important?

The position of Corregidor Island in Manila Bay makes it an extremely strategic island for anyone wanting to attack or defend Manila. For this reason, it was the scene of incredibly heavy fighting during the Second World War.

What is Corregidor Island today?

These days, Corregidor Island is a war memorial to the American and Filipino soldiers who died here. Many of the original buildings and military infrastructure have been left in ruins out of respect for those who fought on the island.

Can you visit Corregidor Island?

Corregidor Island is technically open to visitors, but it’s only accessible by private ferry. Since the pandemic, those ferry trips have been very limited, meaning it can be difficult to reach Corregidor Island sometimes.

This rock rising out of the water is situated at a strategic point of Manila Bay and is one of the most important defences for the capital of the Philippines. Whoever holds the island can control the maritime access to the country’s key port.

It’s for this reason that, during the Second World War, the Japanese were so intent on claiming it. It was the key to their planned conquest of the Pacific.

Corregidor Island in World War II

For months the Japanese bombarded the island, throwing everything they had at it.

From December 1941 until May, bombs rained down and large guns shot at Corregidor. Japanese aircraft flew more than 600 missions and dropped more than 1700 bombs. Meanwhile, the artillery pieces fired consistently.

It’s estimated that on the night of heaviest fire, more than 16,000 shells hit the island.

When the Japanese finally landed on Corregidor on the night of May 5, the men waiting for them fought back as best they could. They were terribly outnumbered, though, and were running low on resources. You can only imagine how weak they would have been too.

The months of attacks had meant they could hardly get any supplies. They were eating just 800 grams of food a day and drinking water just twice.

But they knew how important Corregidor was. They weren’t just fighting for their lives but, as far as they knew, for the future of the world.

In the end, the island fell to the Japanese. The commander sent a message to President Franklin Roosevelt:  “There is a limit of human endurance, and that point has long been passed” . The remaining Americans and Filipinos, waving white flags, surrendered.

The story of the island doesn’t end there. The Japanese, with control of Corregidor, were able to take Manila Bay. It was the finest port in the Far East and they used it to expand their advance. The overnight battle on this small island meant the fall of Asia.

The tide turned a few years later and Corregidor was retaken from the Japanese in February 1945. This was the last major military action it would see.

Since the Spanish first established a base on the island in 1570, it had also been taken – and held – by the Dutch, the British, the Americans, and the Japanese. But finally Corregidor Island was at peace.

Now, when you visit Corregidor Island, you’ll be able to trace much of this history. But being able to land here peacefully is relatively new in the site’s long history.

Things to see on Corregidor Island

Until recently, the island knew nothing but war, so it’s fitting that’s what you see when you visit. All across Corregidor are the ruins of the military base run by the Americans and Filipinos during the Second World War.

The buildings that were destroyed by bombs have been left that way and others, destroyed by time, have been secured but not rebuilt. The large bases for the guns are still there and, in many cases, the guns are too.

The barracks are just skeletons but they are evidence of the men who once lived here and the lives they led.

One of the most impressive things to see on Corregidor Island is the enormous tunnel complex inside a mountain.

The main tunnel, with entrances at each end, is 250 metres long and about 7 metres wide. 24 smaller tunnels of about 50 metres come off it in both directions.

Originally it was designed as bomb-proof storage but, when the Japanese siege became too much, it was used as a bunker, a hospital and a command centre.

It was from here inside Malinta Tunnel that General Douglas MacArthur had his headquarters and the President of the Philippines had his seat of government at one point.

Around the island are walking trails – and even bike trails – that allow you to explore the heritage that remains. These days, there’s also a fair bit of interesting flora and animal life to look out for.

Corregidor isn’t massive and you could walk around the whole thing on your own if you wanted, but there wouldn’t be time to do that and get the detailed visit with all the historical information that’s usually offered with a tour.

Visiting Corregidor Island

To get to Corregidor Island, you need to go by boat. However, there are no public transport options, so you’ll need to use a private ferry.

Unfortunately, since the coronavirus pandemic, the usual ferry operator has shut down and access to Corregidor Island has been fairly patchy, with limited information about what’s available.

Tours (including boat transfers) restarted in the middle of 2022, just on Saturdays and Sundays, but then stopped again.

The tours and transfers began again in January 2023, but they are only happening on specific days.

UPDATE MAY 2023: There are currently some tours going to Corregidor Island on the following dates – Monday 1 May, Saturday 6 May, Saturday 13 May, Saturday 20 May.

The tours cost 4500 php (U$80) and includes roundtrip boat transfers, island entrance fee, historical tram tour with guide, Malinta Tunnel light show, and a buffet lunch by the beach.

The boat leaves Manila at 06:00 and gets back at 16:30.

It’s also possible you may be able to get a tour company in Manila that can arrange a boat to Corregidor Island, but I haven’t been able to find one. (Please drop me a note and let me know if you do know of one!)

Normally, when the boats are running regularly, most tourists book a tour package with the ferry company which includes ground transportation around the island.

If you want a bit of independence and a bit more time to explore, you also used to be able stay overnight in the hotel on the island. Many people who choose this option take the tour during the day and then have the evening and next morning to explore for themselves once the tourist groups have left.

It’s a very quiet place to spend time in. Far from hectic Manila, there’s just the wind in the trees and the lapping of the water on the shore. It’s hard to imagine how noisy and chaotic it must have been when the bombs were dropping and the guns shooting.

We should be thankful for the peace now but not forget the lives that were lost here and the heroism of those who held out for so long, determined to protect Corregidor against all odds.

Yeah, I really didn’t know anything about it before I went so it was really interesting to learn all about how important it was during the Second World War. And, you’re right, seeing it in person really helps you to understand what the people based here would have gone through.

My grandfather was a part of the group of american soldiers taken POW here in 1942. I’d like to know if you could tell me more detail about what each photo represents? I’m just doing a bunch of research off the backend of his memoir from 1995. If you know anything about each photo’s contents more specifically it’d be awesome to know.

We visited THE ROCK 2x .. 2011 and 2014 , Amazing PLACE, lots of war history ,my father was a war veteran both US and PHILIPPINES, was a POW with the Bataan march. Passed away at 100 yrs old. He had many stories about the war .

A Day Tour of the Philippines' Historic Island of Corregidor

For a quick escape and a unique experience outside Metro Manila, taking a day tour to Corregidor Island of Cavite is a great option especially if you’re into appreciating the country’s remarkable historical sites. What was once a harbor defense of Manila during the war now serves as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines.

Brief story of corregidor.

Corregidor Island, being located 30 miles out at the entrance of Manila Bay, served as the country’s immediate harbor defense against enemy warships. This U.S. Army Coast artillery had cannons, disappearing gun batteries, minefields, and other defense weapons installed in different parts of the island.

The historical battle of Corregidor began ten hours after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 8, 1941. After their attack, they concentrated their efforts on the Philippines’ archipelago and targeted Metro Manila. At the time, the Bataan peninsula, Corregidor Island, and the defensive guns of the city aimed to protect Manila and the nation from being conquered by the Japanese.

The island of Corregidor served as a witness to the heavy bombardment, thousands of lives lost, and also the moment of victory when the Filipino and American forces recaptured the island in 1945.

Today, the island serves both as a historical monument and must-visit destination that lures in tourists to take a look at the preserved military installations, wrecked buildings, and other important sites that serve as a tribute to the sacrifices of the Filipino and American forces who died while defending the country against the Japanese.

How to get there

There are tour companies that offer day tours for those who’d like to visit Corregidor Island in a day. Their packages often include ferryboat transfers, terminal fees, guided tour, and lunch. Upon arrival in the island, some tour operators would pick up travelers by pre-war type streetcars called “tranvias” before the beginning of the tour. Nonetheless, tourists still have the chance to rent ATVs, buses, or jeepneys .

Usually, day trip travelers are scheduled to leave the port in the morning and depart Corregidor in the afternoon. It only takes about an hour to reach the island and see the important landmarks and historical significance of the tadpole-shaped island. While a day tour is an ideal option for a quick trip outside Manila, there are lodgings and accommodations for those who’d like to spend a night on the island.

Sights to look forward to

There are a handful of places to visit (more than 10 remarkable sites) and activities to do when on the island. Apart from the tour, one can swim at the South Beach, ride a zip-line or a kayak, try birdwatching, or catch a light and sound show.

Malinta Tunnel

Usually tagged as the highlight of the Corregidor Tour, the Malinta Tunnel is famously known for being a place for ghost sightings on the island. During the Second World War, it served as a bomb shelter and even had an office for the Philippine President and a medical ward in it. When translated into English, the word “ malinta ” actually means full of leeches as the place had lots of slugs during the time it was being constructed. Now, anyone can catch a light and sound show at the Malinta Tunnel to get a glimpse of what life was like during the war.

Japanese Garden of Peace

The Japanese Garden of Peace symbolizes the peace and friendship between the Filipinos and the Japanese. It’s a park dedicated by the Japanese to the late soldiers who fought during the war, whether it’s their fellow countrymen, Filipinos, or Americans. The park has a shrine, a prayer area, and a pavilion where Second World War photographs, markers, and memorabilia can be found. Visiting family members of war veterans often say a prayer to their loved ones whom they lost during the war.

Mile-long Barracks

Located on the island’s highest point, the Mile-long Barracks was constructed to be a hurricane-proof structure that houses the quarters for soldiers and the office of General Douglas McArthur. Although its length does not really reach a mile, the Topside Barracks are considered to be the longest that we have in the world. Today, it’s one of the few sites in Corregidor where travelers are allowed to roam around and explore. Even during the day, the iconic skeletal building exhibits the dark and empty ambiance that would remind one of the island’s war-ravaged past.

Battery Hearn

When in Corregidor, you’ll notice that there are numerous artillery batteries in sight. But among the island’s major batteries you’ll come across, Battery Hearn is the most famous. That’s because it’s the longest gun you’ll ever find and its 12-inch mortars (bullets) can fire to a range of 27 kilometers. However, this was a disadvantage during the war because its 35-degree firing elevation failed to hit Japanese forces in Bataan.

Filipino Heroes Memorial

Mainly designed by Filipino Architect Francisco Manosa (who also designed the EDSA Shrine in Ortigas), the sprawling Filipino Heroes Memorial is one of the island’s most notable spots. This landmark honors the Filipinos who bravely fought during the war, even if the country’s sovereignty meant losing their own lives. Here, one will find a museum which holds old photographs of President Manuel Quezon, murals carved by sculptor Manuel Casal, and some paintings of Lideo Mariano that convey the horrors of the war.

How to get to Corregidor Island?

The way to Corregidor is by a Sun Cruise ferry that leaves Manila once a day from Sun Cruise Terminal in Esplanade Seaside Terminal in Pasay City. Boarding time is 07:00 AM, and the estimated time of departure is 07:30. They are very punctual with their schedule, and being even slightly late will result in cancellation of your booking. Getting back to Manila takes place once a day at 03:00 PM, and boarding time is 02:30 in Corregidor.

The ride takes 1 hour and 15 minutes. Getting there can be part of the whole Corregidor tour, or independent (and then you can tour the island on your own). The rate for the ferry ride itself will be arranged by you. The price difference between a full tour and just the ferry ride isn’t significant, and a guided tour will help you get the most from your trip.

There are two alternative ways to get to the island from Bataan. This option is good for large groups as it does lower the price greatly. However, you’ll need to travel all the way to Bataan, which takes several hours. There you can either take a private boat from the Maritime Academy of Asia or the Pacific Port in Alas-Asin. If you choose this way to get to Corregidor there is an added terminal fee of Php 30 per person and entrance fee of Php 300 per person.

Booking an overnight package

There is only one accommodation option on Corregidor and that is the Corregidor Inn – sometimes also called Corregidor Hotel and Resort. It has two parts, the hotel which is situated on a hill in the middle of the island, and the beach cottages near the Japanese Peace Garden. The hotel has a lot historic significance, as it was the last station of the Japanese resistance on the island when it was taken back by the Americans.

It doesn’t matter where you’ll choose to stay, the inn or the cottages, as both are practically the same hotel. That being said, the hotel itself is more suitable for smaller groups, and the cottages for larger ones. Being away from the center means they are both quiet and provide privacy. The restaurant serves both the cottages and the hotel, and there is a shuttle service to take you back and forth.

What to do?

The regular guided tour in Corregidor is a bus tour. You can also have a walking guided tour and a bicycle tour (bring your own bike). The buses on the island are designed in the same style as the trams which used to be the main transportation option on the island.

This is the itinerary for the regular tour to Corregidor. The tour is available only during summer, because during the JJASON months (June, July, August, September, October, and November) or Lean Season can be very rough and not safe for sailing. Succeeding months will highly depend on the weather forecast. Therefore, no scheduled trips yet .

The middle barracks is the first stop of the tour. At the time it was built, in 1915, it was a very modern facility. Even though it was destroyed by Japanese bombs in 1941, some parts were left intact. From there you'll continue to Battery Way, Battery Grubbs, and Battery Hearn.

Battery Way was one of the two mortar batteries, with a range of 1,400m in every direction. Grubbs was a battery of two disappearing guns. It was directly hit by the Japanese, and has remained unmanned for the rest of the war. Hearn is one of the two largest guns on the island, with a horizontal range of 27,000 meters. The batteries were used for protecting Manila bay from naval forces as well as attacking targets in the neighboring peninsula of Bataan.

After the batteries you will reach the Ruins of Mile Long Barracks (it was actually 1/3 miles long). General Douglas MacArthur's office was in this building, and it used to be the world's longest barracks. Afterwards you'll see the Pacific War Memorial Complex, the Cine Corregidor and the Spanish lighthouse.

The Pacific War Memorial was built by the U.S. government in 1968 to commemorate the Filipino and American soldiers who sacrificed their lives on Corregidor. The Cinema of Corregidor is part of the memorial complex. It's the remains of the building that was used by the soldiers and their families who lived on the island. The Spanish lighthouse is the oldest building on the island, built in 1836 by the Spanish government. Although it was damaged during the war, it was fully reconstructed in 1950. Visitors can climb to the top.

After lunch the tour goes to the other two war memorials. The Japanese Gardens of Peace are a memorial built in honor of the soldiers of Imperial Japan, who fought on Corregidor. It's a mix of traditional and militaristic Japanese style, and was funded by the Japanese government. The Filipino Heroes Memorial and Museum is the latest, built in 1987. It is dedicated to tell the story of the Filipino heroes who fought alongside the Americans.

After the museum you'll visit the Malinta Tunnel. It was built from 1922-1932 and designated as an underground bomb shelter. Later on it became the military hospital of the island. It is also possible to experience the Malinta Tunnel light and sound show for an additional fee. You could also take the Tunnel Lateral tour at night if you're staying on the island.

The last stop is at Lorcha Dock , where General MacArthur and his family members left for Australia in 11 March 1942, fleeing from the Japanese Forces. Upon arrival to Australia he made a speech with his famous lines "I came through and I shall return", a promise that would only be fulfilled in October 20, 1944, when MacArthur landed on the island of Leyte.

More tour options and additions

As mentioned above, the only addition to the regular tour is the Light and Sound Show in Malinta Tunnel for 200P. Guests who are staying overnight can also add the following activities to the itinerary: The Rocket Zipline, guided sunset and sunrise viewing, Malinta Tunnel lateral tour, and kayaking. You won’t run out of things to do, especially if you're traveling with kids. Or you can also choose to just relax, enjoy the evening breeze and watch the great view of the lightened Manila Bay.

You can take the Historical Walking Tour instead of the regular tour. Unlike the bus tours it exclude the trams, and most of the sites on the bottom and tail side of Corregidor. Instead, you'll only be going through the sites of the top and middle side of Corregidor. Most of the sites listed in the after-lunch section of the itinerary are not a part of it.

However, you'll get deeper insight of the historical sites, and visit places only accessible by foot. So, if you're a real history buff this might be the better option for you. The walking tours also have less people in them and are therefore more intimate. If you're staying overnight, then you could take the Malinta Tunnel lateral tour, and visit the bottom and tail sides (Japanese Gardens of Peace, Filipino Heroes Memorial, etc.) of the island on your own.

The Historical Walking tour  doesn't include lunch, so you can either pay for it separately or bring your own. You should be moderately fit for this tour as it does require a lot of walking.

How does Corregidor fit into my travel plan?

A daytrip tour package to Corregidor Island can be a great way to spend one of your days in Manila. It is especially true if you're a history lover, and interested in WW2 history in the pacific. Even though the island is one big monument, it still has a very tranquil atmosphere and offers a break from the chaos of Manila.

An overnight Package is advised if you want to experience more of the activities the island offers. It is especially true if you're traveling with children or don't like to be in a rush. If you are staying in Metro Manila for a long time, this place is a really nice getaway with added value.

You'll also see mortars, guns, and ruins in Battery Way, Battery Hearn, Battery Crockett, and Battery Geary.

A highlight of your Corregidor private tour is the Filipino Heroes Memorial, which commemorates the bravery of Filipinos who fought for the country. CORREGIDOR DAY TOUR: 12 Historic Sites to Visit

They were in Manila for business. Saritha was from Bahrain and Scott from the United States. How I ended up in their company was the result of a friend’s blackmail spirited persuasion. My friend Grace wanted to show them around as it was their first time in Manila. With Scott serving in the military in the past, Corregidor was an easy pick. But Grace thought that me tagging along would make the trip more insightful. Silly her, it was my first time in Corregidor, too!

I have lived in Manila for almost a decade now, but I had never left footprints on Corregidor Island. It was one of those plans that I often overlooked because of proximity. (I always had an excuse along the lines of I-can-visit-it-anytime-anyway.) It just won’t happen. But with a friend constantly bugging me, it finally did.

Corregidor was officially called Fort Mills during the American era but was also commonly referred to as “The Rock” for its terrain and fortifications, and “Gibraltar of the East” for its resemblance to Mediterranean Sea’s peninsular fortress. Strategically located at the mouth of Manila Bay, it is the biggest of the heavily fortified islands that make up the harbor defenses of the capital.

It played a pivotal role during the Pacific War, with its fall signaling Japanese victory and the start of their occupation of the Philippines (1942-45). We all know how horrible that turned out to be.

The most popular option (but not exactly the most budget-friendly) of exploring Corregidor is the day tour offered by Sun Cruises .

The Tour Package already includes ferry transfers, guide fees, buffet lunch, and the actual tour of the island. The tour lasts 9 hours (including the transfers) and usually starts at 7am at the docks at CCP Complex, Manila. The jetty is near Folk Arts Theater and Coconut Palace. Cost: PhP2250 (weekdays) and PhP2449 (weekends and holidays). Steep if you ask me, but it was worth it somehow. The tour ran smoothly and was very organized.

If you’ve always wanted to visit Corregidor but have no idea what to expect, let me give you a virtual tour of the island. Here are 10 stops that form the day tour.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Battery Way

Your first stop is most likely Battery Way. It was named after 2nd Lieutenant Henry Way of the 4th US Artillery. This gun emplacement was built from 1904 to 1914. Four 12-inch mortars, capable of hurling from 45-70 degrees, sit in the middle of the site. It is one of the only two mortar batteries in Corregidor.

Battery Hearn

If my memory serves me right, the gun at Battery Hearn is the largest on the island. “At firing elevation between 15 and 25 degrees, the gun could cover the full 360-degree field,” brags the site marker. “On May 6, 1942, the gun and carriage were disabled by the crew before surrendering, but the Japanese had American POW’s place the battery back in service.” Today the gun bobs beside a crater, left when the US dropped a bomb here in January 1945.

Mile-Long Barracks

The skeletal ruins of the Topside Barracks have become the most iconic landmark of the island. It used to house the quarters of American officers and enlisted personnel. The structure is also called Mile-Long Barracks even though it spans only 1520 feet, less than a third of a mile. According to our guide, however, if you walk from end to end on all three stories of the building, you will be covering almost a mile.

Pacific War Memorial

Perched on the island’s highest point is the Pacific War Memorial Complex. It harbors a museum, a circular altar under a memorial dome, and the Eternal Flame of Freedom Monument, all built in honor of Filipino and American soldiers who served during World War II. The site was completed in 1968 to the tune of USD 3 Million.

Also part of the complex are Cine Corregidor, the island’s movie house, and a small park behind the flame monument, which allows a fantastic view of the island’s tail end.

Corregidor Lighthouse

First lit in 1853, it is one of the oldest structures on the island. The Siege of Corregidor left it damaged, but it was reconstructed in the 1950s. Souvenir shops and small stars flank the walkway leading to the main tower.

Battery Geary

Completed in 1911, this gun emplacement was named after Capt. Woodbridge Geary of the 13th US Infantry. According to CorregidorIsland.com , “The eight 12-inch mortars of this battery were considered the most effective anti-personnel weapon in Corregidor. The battery had two mortar pits with 3 magazines and its standard crew consisted of 4 men per mortar.”

Battery Crocket

Battery Crocket is one of the six emplacements with disappearing guns on the island. These 12-inch guns were said to have 360-degree traverse (other sources say only 220-degree coverage) and required no smaller than a 30-man crew to properly function.

MacArthur Statue

One of the most prominent figures during the war, General Douglas MacArthur was stationed in Corregidor and used it as Allied Headquarters until March 11, 1942. A statue in honor of him stands by the Lorcha Dock, MacArthur’s departure point for Australia. Many think this was where he uttered the unforgettable line, “I shall return.” Truth is, he actually said it when he was already in Adelaide, Australia.

Japanese Garden of Peace

A memorial to the Japanese soldiers who fought in Corregidor during the war and a prayer area to their kin, the Japanese Garden of Peace cradles a Shinto Shrine and a 10-ft tall stone statue of Buddha, which faces the direction of Japan.

Filipino Heroes Memorial

Also on the tail end of the island is the Filipino Heroes Memorial, a 6000-square meter site designed by Francisco Mañosa. The main attractions here are the 14 Manual Casas-sculpted murals that depict the battles of Filipinos.

Malinta Tunnel

“The name Malinta came from the word ‘linta,’ meaning leech,” our tour guide explained. “When they were digging through the mountain to build the tunnel, they found a lot of these blood sucking worms along the way.”

Malinta Tunnel took 10 years to complete (1922-1932), an effort that proved useful during the war as it became the last stronghold of the military operations before the Japanese occupation. An elaborate network of tunnels run through the mountain, sheltering many of the soldiers during the war.

Today, its main tunnel is the theater for the Lights and Sound show, an audio-visual presentation created by National Artist Lamberto Avellana. The show narrates the key events of the battle in Corregidor. (Additional P200 fee applies.)

To be honest, the show was a bit underwhelming. For some reason, I was expecting a more dynamic, more interactive presentation, but it was segmented, outdated, and a bit dragging. (I returned to Corregidor months later and they said the Lights and Sounds show had been unavailable for weeks because of technical problems. I’m not sure if it’s operational again.)

Corregidor Hotel

The lunch stop. Lunch was served at the La Playa Restaurant at Corregidor Hotel. The food was not bad, but not great either. There are three to four choices of dishes, paella, and some fruits for dessert (watermelons on the two occasions I was there). The hotel is situated along South Beach, but the break was too short for a swim. Or any beach-activity for that matter.

I loved my visit to the Philippines and it has been many years now but my primary complaint was that leaving out of Manila had to be one of the most ridiculous displays of security I’d ever seen. After two security checks we literally walked down a corridor with no exits or entrances only to find another security stop. As if somebody might cut a whole through the roof and climb on down…nope, they have that scenario covered! It topped my list of “most security stops exiting a country” list. My recommendation after that was that if you go…plan on staying!

Lovely article. To those who plan on visiting the place‚ don’t be having second thoughts esp. if you’re in for the history feels—it’s very worth it. Twelve years have gone by swiftly since last stepping foot on Corregidor Island. It was a cloudy February morning‚ a pleasant day for sight-seeing with friends. It was not that high and so we tried climbing atop that old light-house. The show inside the Malinta Tunnel came as pretty enjoyable to me. I eerily felt being transported back in time as part of the war being fought in the island. PS: As a side-note‚ the ‘fertility buddha’ is not actually a buddha but rather‚ a bodhisattva (pre-buddha or on the path towards buddhahood). He is best known as Avalokitesvara or the bodhisattva of mercy and compassion. His female manifestation is a mother goddess known as Kuan Yin in China or in this case‚ Kannon‚ as she is known in Japan.

Amazing piece. I would love to visit these places with a good tour guide.

MY EXPERIENCE ON THE CORREGIDOR TOUR

At 10 am, my friends and I jumped on our private boat that was waiting on the beach directly in front of the Secret Spot Hostel. The trip over the channel to the island is a 45-minute journey, passing Naked Island and Hanoyoy Island.

The skipper beached the boat on Corregidor Beach, a glistening white sand coastline complemented by a palm tree forest, turquoise water, and a colorful reef.

I was in disbelief of how incredibly beautiful this island is before I even stepped foot off the boat.

The first few hours on the Corregidor Island Tour were spent snorkeling in the crystal clear waters, climbing palm trees, and enjoying a freshly cooked barbeque lunch and cold beers.

The local residents of Corregidor Island Siargao offer cooking services on the island, so we handed over our food and they prepared a feast for us all. The cost for the cooks is included in the Corregidor tour price.

After lunch, we decided to hike to the other side of the island, passing by a palm tree rainforest and a small local village in the center of the island.

There were kids playing basketball, teenagers singing karaoke from their homes, and elderly people watering their gardens. The beautifully slow pace of life on this island is something else!

We continued along a pebbly beach and up a large grass hill, and at the top was one of the most spectacular landscapes I have ever seen.

Coconut palm trees, rolling hills, long grass, herds of water buffaloes, and secluded beaches. I literally felt like I was dreaming… My friends and I were in awe and speechless of what laid in front of our eyes!

There is so much exploring to do on Corregidor Island Siargao and many awesome spots for photo opportunities.

I sent up my drone camera to get some aerial photos and videos which was the best idea I had all day. The view of the island from the air had me in disbelief that this place exists!

The day was coming to an end so we made our way back to the starting point of our hike, had another quick swim in the ocean, and jumped on board our boat for departure back to Siargao.

Corregidor Island Visitors Guide

This brief guide to Corregidor Island will help you plan your trip. It contains information on what to do, eat, and drink as well as the must-see spots and the best hotels.

ABOUT SEE & DO EAT & DRINK STAY BUDGET ADVICE

Located at the entrance of Manila Bay, Corregidor Island is just 48 kilometers west of Manila and one-hour away via ferry.  Given its location, Corregidor Island, along with neighboring islands including El Fraille Island, Caballo Island, and Carabao Island, has been fortified to serve as harbor defenses of Manila Bay and Manila during World War II.

Corregidor Island played an important role in Philippine history as it became an American military reservation, a temporary location of Philippine Government where Manuel L. Quezon was inaugurated as president, and the last to surrender to the Japanese troops in 1942.  Filipino and American forces recaptured the island after almost three years.

Before the American Colonial period, Corregidor was also used as a signal outpost to warn Manila of approaching enemies and as a station for customs inspection under Spanish rule.  It is also how the island got its name since Corregidor comes from the Spanish word corregir which means “to correct”.  Isla del Corregidor literally translates to Island of the Corrector taking into consideration the Spanish customs system.

Nowadays, Corregidor Island serves as a historic monument and a tourist destination where tourists can see various military installations and buildings that bear witness to the war that ravaged many lives of not only Filipinos and Americans but Japanese soldiers as well.

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Corregidor Island summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Corregidor Island in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

Getting Here

There are ways to get here depending on your starting point. The following are the major ports of entry for this destination.

Ninoy Aquino International Airport

BUS TERMINAL

Sabang East Central North Boat Terminal

The easiest way to get to Corregidor is to take a ferry ride from Manila.  Sun Cruises, the only company with ferry plying this route, has one trip from Manila to Corregidor and another trip from Corregidor back everyday.  It departs Manila at 8:00 AM and departs Corregidor at 2:30 in the afternoon.  The boarding will close 30 minutes before the departure so make sure to be at the terminal ahead of time.  Travel time is approximately one hour and 15 minutes.  Sun Cruises terminal is located in Esplanade Seaside Terminal, SM Mall of Asia (SM MOA) Complex.

Rate starts at P2,000 which includes round trip boat transfers, guided island tour, entrance fees, and buffet lunch with drinks.  Other activities on the island, such as hiking or the use of kayak or bambike, are charged separately.  Make it a point to book in advance as slots are limited.  You can book your tour through Corregidor Foundation Inc. or through other tour operators such as kkday and others.

Another option to get to Corregidor is via Camaya Coast in Mariveles, Bataan.  The cost of the tour ranges from P1,600 to P2,000 and includes entrance fee at Camaya Coast Beach Resort, use of the resort’s facilities, lunch, snacks, roundtrip ferry transfers to Corregidor, entrance fee to the island, and guide.

Getting around.

The following are the modes of transportation available on Corregidor Island …

Biking is the best option when getting around the island especially for those locations that are not accessible by tram. Bring your bike since there are no bike rentals on the island.

Tranvia or a Tram-like Vehicle

This is the mode of transport used for tours around the island. Inspired by the trams used during the World War II on the island.

The Pacific War Memorial was erected by the US Government in 1968 to remember Filipino and American soldiers who lost their lives defending the country and the Pacific during the war.  The structure is a rotunda with an oculus where light during daylight hours falls on the altar located directly under the said oculus.  The museum is a treasure trove of items such as old photographs, money, identification cards, and diaries as well as weapons and uniforms used during the war.  There are also statues of soldiers and a bust of General Douglas McArthur, the leader of the troop during that time.

Behind the museum is the Eternal Flame of Freedom, a 12-meter high Corten steel structure with lights powered by solar energy.  The structure symbolizes eternal freedom as well as commemorates the Filipino and American war heroes.

2 | Malinta Tunnel

Built by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Malinta Tunnel is a tunnel complex that was used as a bomb-proof storage, personnel bunker, and 1,000-bed hospital during the American era.  It was the headquarters of McArthur and the USAFFE as well as the seat of the Commonwealth Government of the Philippines under President Manuel L. Quezon and Vice President Sergio Osmeña.

Presently, the tunnel is being used as the venue of an audio-visual presentation by Lamberto V. Avellana, the first National Artist of the Philippines for Film.  The presentation features the events that happened during World War II including the reluctant evacuation of McArthur and President Quezon to Mindanao .

3 | Ruins of Mile-Long Barracks

Although it measures less than a mile, it is commonly referred to as the Mile-long Barracks as the combined length of the structure from first to third floor is equivalent to a mile.  It is said to be the world’s longest military and accommodated 8,000 soldiers at the time.

The barracks was built as hurricane-proof however it was severely damaged during the war and what remains is the skeleton of the building that has seen how Filipino and American forces fought for freedom.

4 | Filipino Heroes Memorial

Located at the tail end of Corregidor Island is the Filipino Heroes Memorial, a 6,000-meter complex which features 14 murals chronicling the major Philippine battles from 15th century up to the present day.  The memorial was designed by Francisco Mañosa and the murals were carved by Manuel Casas.  The complex was inaugurated in 1992 making it the recent addition to several historic attractions on the island.

5 | Japanese Garden of Peace

Funded by the Japan Government, the Japanese Garden of Peace is dedicated to all the soldiers killed during the war.  It is also located at the tail end of the island and features markers with Japanese inscriptions, prayer area, shrines, and a pavilion containing photographs and other memorabilias.  Anti-aircraft guns line the edge of the hill and a Buddha monument towers over them.

Despite the Japanese being the ones who attacked and captured the island, the memorial is not only to honor those who sacrificed their lives but also to symbolize the friendship between Japan and the Philippines.

6 | Corregidor Lighthouse

The historic lighthouse of Corregidor Island was constructed and first lit in 1853 during the Spanish era.  Together with the one in Caballos Island, Corregidor Island lighthouse was the second oldest lighthouse in the Philippines next to the lighthouse at the mouth of Pasig River.  The lighthouse stands on the highest point of the island and measures 42 feet from the base, hence the effective height of 693 feet above sea level.

The lighthouse was heavily damaged during the fight against the Japanese and was rebuilt in 1950 using the remains from the previous structure.  The lighthouse has been running on solar power since the 1990s.

The view deck at the top of the island is a great spot to see the island and the areas surrounding it.  At the base is a souvenir shop selling shirts, old paper bills, and other memorabilias.

7 | Old guns and mortars

Remains of guns, mortars, and other weapons used during the war can still be seen in various parts of the island up to this day.  These weapons have been preserved and presently serve as tourist attractions of the island apart from being reminders of what it took to achieve freedom and peace we are enjoying today.

8 | Nearby destinations

Most tours to Corregidor Island depart from Manila but you can also sail to the island from Mariveles, Bataan which is approximately 10 kilometers away.

1 | La Playa Restaurant

One of the two restaurants on the island, La Playa serves local and international cuisines to the tourists of the island.  The restaurant located at the Corregidor Inn has two dining setups – al fresco and indoor but with airy ambience.  The restaurant offers a nice view of the island which makes the dining experience more enjoyable.  The menu may be limited but the food is tasty.

2 | McArthur’s Lounge

McArthur’s Cafe is the newest dining place on the island.  It is located near Lorcha Dock, also referred to as McArthur’s Dock, as it was the dock the American soldier used when he evacuated the island during the fall of Corregidor against the Japanese forces.  The cafe serves local favorites such as silog meals, nilagang baka (a kind of beef soup), and lechon kawali.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.  AirBnB is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using Booking.com ,  HostelWorld ,  Agoda , and  Expedia . 

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly. 

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 15-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips. 

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.  

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option. 

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter. 

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!  

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

When traveling to Corregidor, make sure to book your tour in advance to secure a slot as they are limited.

• Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
• Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
• Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
• Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
• Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
• Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
• It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
• Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
• Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
• Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling on Corregidor Island or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

Corregidor Island Tour From Siargao: Complete Guide

Corregidor Island is found just off the coast of Siargao. It has several beautiful beaches and coves but it is well known for its palm tree-covered hills, which visitors can reach after undertaking a small hike from the beach. A Corregidor Island tour is part of many of the island-hopping trips that leave Siargao every day.

WHERE IS CORREGIDOR ISLAND

Corregidor Island (also known as Casolian Island is south of the popular surf island Siargao in the south of the Philippines. There are a number of smaller islands nearby Siargao that are popular for island hopping, the most popular route is the day-trip to Daku, Guyam, and Naked Island .

From Siargao, it is about a 45-minute boat journey if you leave General Luna on a classic, outrigger boat. It’s important to note that on Google Maps, the island is listed as ‘Casolian Island’. There is another island in the Philippines, closer to Manila, which is also called Corregidor Island and shows up when you search it on Google Maps.

HOW TO GET TO CORREGIDOR ISLAND

To get to Corregidor Island from Siargao Island the most common way is to join a group tour that includes Corregidor but also another one or two island visits. For less than $25 USD, you can visit Corregidor Island and another spot to complete your day-trip. It is possible to book a private boat tour but this will be much more expensive. There are no public transportation options.

BOOKING A TOUR TO CORREGIDOR ISLAND FROM SIARGAO ISLAND

To book your Siargao Island hopping experience online, the best price and most reliable one is  this activity on Klook . This activity includes four islands all in one day. You get to visit Corregidor, Naked Island, Daku Island, and Guyam. It costs slightly more than the regular three-island trip but that’s because you get four islands and visit them all in one day!

The price is very similar to what you will find at the street vendors (and likely on the same boat anyway). You get your full day of island hopping and lunch included. It’s hard to go wrong.

I’ve done the tour as the three-island, four-island and even Corregidor in combination with Mamon & La Janosa. It’s fair to say I’ve spent some time island-hopping out of Siargao.

MY EXPERIENCE ON CORREGIDOR ISLAND, SIARGAO

I’ve been to Corregidor Island twice now and both times were a fantastic experience. However, they were on different island-hopping itineraries. On the first occasion, I did the  FOUR ISLAND TOUR (Corregidor, Naked, Daku, Guyam)  and on the second occasion, two years later, I visited Mamon Island and then Corregidor.

There are many ways to include Corregidor Island in your itinerary. Therefore, in this blog post, I will just share my experience mostly about Corregidor Island not all of the islands included in the itinerary as it can vary.

Corregidor Island is one of my favorite islands to visit near Siargao because it has a small element of adventure rather than just the regular beach hangouts you find at the other islands like Guyam and Naked. Before our boat docked, I sent the drone up so I could show you guys an aerial of just how pristine the waters are around the island!

We jumped off the boat and met our guide. The guide is always organized by your boat crew and it is a requirement. It’s a great way for the local residents to monitor the visitors to the island and to make a small living by guiding tourists up the hill to visit the palm trees and check out the views of Corregidor Island. The walk takes about 30-minutes each way in total and you probably want about 30-minutes at the top of the hill to explore the palms, take some photos and enjoy the view.

So, after finding our guide, we set off through the village where karaoke was blaring and the little kids all offered high fives and beautiful smiles! It’s such a picturesque village with a small church, palm trees and a grass corridor through the middle that connects the beach to the top of the hill. It’s a nice walk and gives you some insight into how the island residents are living.

The walk leaves the village and veers into the trees as you begin to enjoy a little bit of incline in the humid conditions. If you aren’t used to hiking or the humidity you may find this walk quite uncomfortable, even though it is very short and easy. It’s exposed at the top of the hill so packing sunscreen and wearing a hat is ideal. Many people get very burnt here as they hike in swimwear.

Once you reach the first little summit, you are now in the land of palm trees. It’s a pretty unique landscape of long grass, a collection of scattered palms and views of the ocean on all sides. There aren’t many places like it!

There are lots of little paths shooting off in all directions but basically there is no wrong or right way to explore Corregidor Island. Both times I’ve visited, we headed out all the way to the farthest point on the island to check out the coves on either side. Along the way, you will find a bent palm tree that has become a bit of a photo-op spot, which I’m sure your guide will point out for you.

To be honest, the best thing to do is just wander around and find new angles and explore different areas. With hundreds of palms up on the hill, it truly is a sight to behold and I’ve found different spots on both of my visits.

After exploring the palm tree hill, we made the trek back down into the village. With 40-minutes left before our boat left to head back to Siargao, we got into an intense sand-volleyball match and really soaked in the island vibes.

As I mentioned earlier, on Google Maps you will find it named Casolian Island instead of Corregidor Island. However, everywhere on Siargao and all of the tour operators most definitely call the island Corregidor.

WHERE I STAYED ON SIARGAO ISLAND

Siargao is pretty straightforward when it comes to picking a region to stay. 90% of people choose to stay somewhere near General Luna. All of the bars, restaurants, tours, ports, and hotels are near General Luna and Cloud 9 surf break.

There are a couple of other regions you could stay in like Pacifico but unless you are purposely looking for isolation, General Luna is your spot. So what are my suggestions for where to stay in General Luna?

First, I’ll tell you where I stayed. Because I stayed for over a month, I managed to find an Airbnb . It was 4 blocks back from the beach, had wi-fi, A/C, a private bathroom, patio and inside were just two bunk beds. It was super basic and I stayed here with two mates and my sister. It was 900 USD for the entire month, which we split four ways so it was just $225 each.

Best time to visit Siargao Island

The best time to visit Siargao depends on what you are looking for. Many consider the best time of year when the weather is best but that also means crowds. I will give you a few options below about when is the best month to visit Siargao Island :

September: Siargao hosts the ‘Cloud 9 Surfing Cup’ each September, an official WSL Pro event

July – November: The best time period for surfing in Siargao is July until November. The easterly Mindanao current provides the islands with waves that came from the deepest regions of the Pacific.

March-May: If you aren’t as interested in the surf but are craving that sun. March until May should bring you guaranteed sunny days. But it’s the Philippines so you can’t guarantee it.

Where is Siargao Island Located

Siargao is located in the region of Mindanao in the Philippines. Mindanao is the southern region of the Philippines.

How to get to Siargao Island

When I visited in 2017 there was only one flight a day from Manila and one from Cebu. Now there are 10-15 flights a day so the question of how to get to Siargao has become much easier. Without going into deep detail on every single option. These are the options for how to get to Siargao:

• Fly from Manila $90-$100
• Fry from Cebu  $90-$100
• Ferry from Surigao City to Siargao Island $5

There are ferries that leave from Manila and Cebu but they go to Surigao City first and then Siargao Island.

Hello! Can you personally recommend doing the tri island with Corregidor Island in 1 day or you would rather do Corregidor Island with Mamon separately?

Trams, otherwise known as trolleys or streetcars, are glorious urban artifacts that ferried people across different locations within busy town centers beginning at the turn of the century. The inhabitants of Corregidor Island during its heyday made use of trams, so touring the island in a similar fashion will surely take you back in time. In addition to that, accredited tour guides will accompany you on your journey, providing historical context but also serving as ambassadors to that world-famous Filipino hospitality.

Tunnels may, from the outset, seem like the stuff of noir cinema or suspense literature, but the Malinta Tunnel is a different ball game. Nowadays, it is the site of a lights-and-sounds presentation crafted by the late, great Lamberto Avellana, National Artist for Film. FLORA & FAUNA

Beyond war, beyond history, Corregidor Island remains a slice of paradise as evidenced by its multifarious flora and fauna. The well-maintained former camp and base is teeming with fruit-bearing trees. After a spell of rain, the roads are carpeted in yellow blooms. Monkeys and geckos are constants in the hilly borders. When the skies clear out, an array of birds dot the atmosphere, among them white-collared kingfishers, zebra doves, Asian glossy starlings, and Eurasian tree sparrows.

Corregidor Island is flanked by at least three beaches in its expansive territory. Its shores practically extend to burgeoning beach destinations such as Morong and Bagac, with its more closed-off borders affording the island’s visitors less constraints and more privacy. Your best bet would be South Beach, which is a mere five-minute walk away from the docking bay. Swim, go kayaking, or ride a raft. You can even barbecue in one of the cabanas nearby.

PARKS AND MEMORIALS

The Pacific War Memorial, a well-curated museum of war memorabilia, key artillery, and inspired pieces of mid-century Americana, stands as an astounding reminder not just of wartime strife but of the culture that sprang because of it. From enlisted men’s uniforms to military correspondence, from shooters of varying shapes and sizes to media clippings of a bygone time, this hub is just one of several stops one can make to be transported back to time. Other attractions include the art gallery inside the Filipino Heroes Memorial, as well as the serene Japanese Garden of Peace, which, apart from serving as a veritable graveyard for the Japanese fallen, also gives visitors an unrivaled view of the fabled Caballo Island across Corregidor.

HISTORICAL SITE

Corregidor Island Travel Guide plus Historical Tour

Corregidor Island has long been known as a historical place as it holds lots of memories, artifacts, and lost souls from World War II. As a former student, Corregidor Island was always on the books we read especially the historical subjects. Just like any other popular places we find in the books, we would dream of getting into that place sometime. And we just did, we were able to visit Corregidor Island and it’s like a dream come true.

We had a great time at Corregidor Island and we will share it with you here. It’s no longer the place where it is known as the island full of ghosts or stories alike because it has been a place of war. There still are the ruins and the eerieness for sure, but since the day it has been restored, you’ll find the island rather more enjoying and satisfying than creepy or an island that’s something to be feared of.

Corregidor Island: A Brief History

“Corregidor comes from the Spanish word “corregir,” meaning to correct. One story states that due to the Spanish system wherein all ships entering Manila Bay were required to stop and have their documents checked and corrected, the island was called “Isla del Corregidor” (Island of the Correction). Another version claims that the island was used as a penitentiary or correctional institution by the Spanish and came to be called “El Corregidor.”

In early and pre-hispanic times, it was likely populated by fishermen and no doubt provided a base for pirates who could easily launch an attack against any vessel entering Manila Bay. During the Spanish era, this tadpole-shaped island was a signal station where bonfires were lit to alert Manila of a home-coming galleon. Later on, Spaniards built a lighthouse on the island.

The Spaniards set up a naval dockyard on the island in 1795. This was followed by a naval hospital and a signal station which was used primarily to warn Manila of approaching enemies. In 1836 a lighthouse was built and in 1853 a stronger light was installed. This was replaced in 1897 and remained in use until the outbreak of the Pacific War , during which it was heavily damaged and rebuilt to the same specifications. During the Spanish times, the small town of San Jose emerged to become the seat of government on the island. Later under the Americans, it evolved into a small community with its paved streets lined with the houses of the Philippine Scouts who constituted the bulk of the garrison in Corregidor.

After the defeat of the Spanish forces by Admiral George Dewey in May of 1898, Spain ceded Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the Americans under the Treaty of Paris which was signed on December 10, 1898. In 1903 a former Spanish garrison building there was converted to a convalescent hospital. The island was designated as a U.S. Military Reservation in 1907 and the army post on Corregidor was named Fort Mills, after Brig. Gen. Samuel M. Mills, chief of artillery of the U.S. Army in 1905-1906. A regular army post was later established in 1908.

The following year army engineers of “H” company, 2nd Battalion of the U.S. Corps of Engineers began to build fortifications on the island to secure the seaward approach to Manila Bay. This was part of the planned “Harbor Defenses of Manila and Subic Bay” due to the strategic location of Corregidor. Concrete emplacements and bomb-proof shelters were constructed and trails and roads were laid out on the island. This engineer contingent left on March 15, 1912, after laying down the groundwork to make Corregidor a great military bastion. Thus began the transformation of a small fishing village into a fortress and site of one of the most heroic battles in the history of war. The big guns of Corregidor in 1941 were used in support of Filipino and American defenders of Bataan until the island itself was invaded by Japanese Forces. The restless pounding by Japanese guns including intermittent bombings reduced its defenses and compelled its surrender. On January 22, 1945, Corregidor was once again caught in the fury of war as the Americans retook the island after a bloody battle.” – Source: Brief History

Corregidor Island Travel Guide

If you haven’t been to Corregidor Island, now is the best time to get there since soon, there will be more tourists sprawling every time because the island has been opened more to the public. Previously, there’s no public transportation there and you have to rent a whole boat just to get to the island. Now, all you need is to book a ferry for your preferred schedule and ready yourself for the tour.

How to Get to Corregidor Island from Manila

Corregidor is still part of Cavite, however, the easiest way to access the island is thru a ferry terminal in Manila, the Esplanade Seaside Terminal.

The easiest way to go to Esplanade Seaside Terminal is to use Grab App or hail a taxi and tell them to drop you off at Esplanade Seaside Terminal in Mall of Asia.

Sun Cruises is the only company that caters fast ferry from Manila to Corregidor and back. Their ferry boats can accommodate as many as 280 passengers.

Corregidor Island: A Historical Experience

From Esplanade Terminal, we boarded the Sun Cruises ferry at 7:30 am. The ferry was large enough to accommodate up to 280 passengers and it’s somehow similar to the boat when we went to Bintan, Indonesia from Singapore. There are two decks in the boat, the upper deck, and the lower deck. Of course, there are better views on the upper deck. I only explored the boat for a short time and since we didn’t have much sleep, I went back to my seat and took a nap. When I opened my eyes, we are almost near Corregidor Island.

Upon docking, we collected our bags and headed down to the island and took a welcome drink from the table where a crew was waiting. Also, I was quite surprised since I did not expect Corregidor Island to be a large island. I thought it was big enough but it was not, it’s a huge island, and there are a lot of trees and some wildlife in the area too!

After taking our drinks, we all went to our designated tram, the vehicle used in the island for transport, and started our Corregidor Historical Tour.

Corregidor Historical Tour

For the Corregidor Historical Tour, we went to the following places:

• Malinta Tunnel

The tunnel got its name from the word “linta” meaning “leech” in English. The area was previously flocking of leeches that’s why it’s called “Malinta”. Here, we went inside to see the lateral connections of each tunnel and how it functioned as a base camp for the Filipino and American soldiers during World War II.

Later on, we also went back here for the Malinta Tunnel Lights and Sounds Show featuring what happened during the war.

• Japanese Memorial Garden

A place where some of the Japanese soldiers were buried. My friend, Tina, didn’t like the place as she sensed some bad vibes in the area. It’s also where a souvenir shop is located. You can take a quick picture here as it spots one of the iconic statues in the area.

• Kindley Airfield

We only went here to see how the airfield looks like. Only small planes can land in Kindly Airfield.

• Filipino Heroes Memorial

A landmark which honors the courage of Filipinos who fought for sovereignty. It houses a museum on one part of its end and holds old photographs of the late President Manuel L. Quezon, a miniature structure of Corregidor Island, and a few portraits and photographs during the World War II. This landmark also honors the Filipino Women who fought side by side with the soldiers.

• Pacific War Memorial Museum

It holds remnants and pieces of important belongings and events happened in Corregidor Island during World War II . There are areas dedicated to the letters of American soldiers to their families, one was for the weapons used during the war, and a few other more. Veteran American soldiers sometimes are also visiting the Pacific War Memorial Museum and look into the photographs when they were still young, reminiscing the memories of the old island.

In the area, also rose the Cine Corregidor where soldiers are watching movies in their non-busy days.

• Malinta Tunnel Lights and Sounds Show

Before going for lunch, we had a quick 15 – 20 mins of lights and sounds show inside the Malinta Tunnel. This shows the happening in the Philippines focusing Corregidor Island and everything that happened in chronological order. If you really are into history, you should take this tour and never think of fear as the tunnel gets dark.

The historical tour was really fun, enjoyable, and full of knowledge. As I get deeper details on every story in Corregidor, my curiosity gets wild as well. While on the tour, I got questions like “What was it like living in a tunnel, not seeing the sun for days?”, “How was life like during those days?”, and many more. I am a naturally curious person so I really wanted to see, as I said to myself, even only in dreams, how Corregidor looks like when it was full of soldiers and their families in the island, to think that there was a cinema in the area, and even a swimming pool in the middle of the jungle.

Tours are always great. I really enjoy classic pictures and you did just that! Adding black and white to those pictures ended up with an outstanding result! Super cool! I also have something for abandoned buildings, don't know why!

I've been there before but we only did the day tour and went home right after. It's a very lovely place especially since I love learning about WWII and what the soldiers went through during that time.

12 Important Facts That You Should Know About Corregidor Island Tour

Corregidor is a big rocky island in the Philippines located 48 kilometers west of Manila that is vitally positioned at the entrance of Manila Bay. This fortress stands as a memorial for the Filipino and American defenders who bravely held their camp against the staggering number of invading Japanese forces during World War II. This 12 facts about Corregidor Island will help you plan out your trip, with ease.

The most notable part of our trip was the mortars and gun barrel garrisons. This was used hand in hand by the military, giving the island its outstanding defensive line against the Japanese. Our first destination was the “Battery Way”, and it had 3 Mortars facing opposite directions, with a launch angle of 45 degrees to 70 degrees. The tour guide carefully explained how each shell was carried out from the ammunition storage. The simple mechanics of a pulley system made it possible, and the right coordination from spotters located in different parts of the island made the mortars accurate.

(5) BATTERY HEARN AND TUNNEL HUNTING

Each destination is given a 10 min free and easy time for pictures. You could also follow the tour guide for a more detailed description of places for each site. The underground network tunnel is one of the best-guided tours on the island because it gives you a good grasp of its historical timeline.

The tunnel entrance at Battery Hearn was dark, and you are forced to light up your pathway using your phone. Be careful with debris along the path, and objects hanging off the roof because you might stumble upon a steel bar if you’re not paying attention. The tunnel is amazingly filled with bats and some lizards, which will give you the chills.

(6) MILE LONG BARRACKS AND MUSEUM

The most anticipated part of the tour on the island mile-long long barracks. This historic landscape travels you back in time which is usually popular with travelers. The tour guide will give you 5 minutes for picture taking, and you’re limited outside of the premises due to unstable condition of the place. Just across the barracks is the Pacific war memorial, noticeable for its huge marble dome-shaped building built to remember our Filipino and American Fighting men, who fought against the Japanese, and won.

(7) LUNCH BY THE LIGHTHOUSE TOWER

The Lighthouse was located in the middle of the island. Going up the viewing deck was challenging because of its steep stair climb which was worth it because you get to see the whole island. The slightly tilted deck is not good for travelers who are afraid of heights, but it’s worth the experience. The view from top follows out a landscape photo of the whole island.  Grab a souvenir in one of the local shops beside the lighthouse filled with wood carvings, shirts, and miniature garrisons to remember your stay on the island!.

(8) BATTERY GEARY AND EXPLOSION

The next destination was is Battery Geary. It is located near the lighthouse, and this garrison had a huge mortar mount and bunkers beside it. The war brought it down to shackles, leaving parts all over the island. Some parts went as far as 20 off the shore. Debris can be found near the road and huge parts of the mortar were put inside the bunkers. Our tour guide deliberately explained the chances of hitting this battery was slim to none. Out of the 16,000 bombs dropped on this island, one bomb managed to land on the ammunition storage and ignited a huge explosion, making it the second biggest explosion on the island.

(9) BATTERY CROCKET

The place had two mortar strongholds located on the opposite sides of the complex. Known as the “disappearing gun“, it showed its massive garrison and its pendulum switch mortar system that paved way during WW I. We had a tour inside the building connecting both guns, it showed 10 different rooms covered with dust and mold. The place had a grime smell to it, and dust flies flying out for each that we make through the garrison.

(10) JAPANESE GARDEN

Another nifty destination was the Japanese memorial site located at the tail end of the island. It had a wonderful view of Cavite, and Carabao Island. The sight gives tribute to for the fallen Japanese soldiers who fought in Corregidor Island. They have souvenir stands around the complex if you need to make another stop before going to the next destination. Garrisons are placed near the garden protecting the rear view of the island making it an all around Fort!.

(11) LORCHA DOCK

Their coastal road had a wonderful view of their seashore. History was made at this dock and is the best place to take pictures. Lorcha Dock is known for General Douglas MacArthur’s statement before disembarking to Australia saying, “I Shall Return” as he leaves his comrades before the full surrender of Corregidor to the Japanese.

(12) MALINTA TUNNEL AND LIGHT SHOW

The tour ended with the island’s best tourist attraction which was the Malinta Tunnel Light show. You need to pay 200 pesos to get on the tour. If you like history and a little gunpowder in the middle, then it’s worth giving it a shot. The attraction is only 30 minutes long, and you need to stand up the whole time you’re watching. Inside this vast black tunnel, the operators will guide you through the history and lifestyle of the island.

It’s around 2:20 pm when we finished our last stopover and left the island around 2:40 pm. With remarkable quotes from our tour guide, we sail back keeping General MacArthur fine words in mind saying “I shall return “. The ferry back to Manila was a quiet one because everyone was dead tired from the humid weather of the islands.I would definitely recommend this trip to my friends and hope to see more improvements from the islands tour attractions.

It’s time for the four-event series that shapes the PGA TOUR’s future, the Korn Ferry Tour Finals.

The 2024 Korn Ferry Tour Finals brings the season-long race for 30 PGA TOUR cards to a dramatic close, as the top 30 on the season-long standings after the Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance will earn 2025 PGA TOUR cards. The Korn Ferry Tour Finals also finalizes exempt and conditional Korn Ferry Tour status for next season, via the top-75 and top-100 thresholds respectively.

Points do not reset into the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, a change introduced in 2023. The race for PGA TOUR cards is purely cumulative across the season-long Korn Ferry Tour Points List from January through October. Eligibility for each event is determined by the season-long Points List into each event, with field reduction after each event (156, 144, 120, 75 players qualify).

"Only 30 guys get to fulfill their dream, and half of them will be without a job for the next year," said University of North Carolina alum Ryan Gerard, on the brink of a TOUR card as the Finals begin. "You've got to go out there and perform; otherwise you might not have a job."

For players who have clinched #TOURBound status into the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, the stakes remain high, as the No. 1 player on the season-long standings after the Korn Ferry Tour Championship will earn exempt 2025 TOUR membership and spots in the 2025 U.S. Open and THE PLAYERS Championship.

In another change from the pre-2023 Korn Ferry Tour Finals format, tournament field sizes are reduced as the series proceeds, a cadence that aligns with the FedExCup Playoffs. The top 156 on the season-long Korn Ferry Tour Points List qualify for the Albertsons Boise Open presented by Chevron (Finals #1), with the top 144 after the Albertsons Boise Open qualifying for the Simmons Bank Open for the Snedeker Foundation (Finals #2). The top 120 after the Simmons Bank Open will qualify for the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship (Finals #3), and the top 75 after the Nationwide will qualify for the Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance (Finals #4).

Status and eligibility

Here are the critical cutoff points on the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Points List that determine 2025 status and eligibility.

• Nos. 1-30 on the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Points List will earn 2025 PGA TOUR membership.
• No. 1 on the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Points List will earn fully exempt 2025 PGA TOUR status and gain access to the 2025 U.S. Open and THE PLAYERS Championship.
• Nos. 31-75 on the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Points List will earn fully exempt 2025 Korn Ferry Tour membership, not subject to reshuffle.
• Nos. 76-100 on the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Points List will earn conditional 2025 Korn Ferry Tour membership, subject to reshuffle.

2024 Korn Ferry Tour Finals schedule

What's new.

• The 2024 Korn Ferry Tour Finals will feature two new courses. The Simmons Bank Open for the Snedeker Foundation remains in the Nashville, Tennessee, area, moving from The Grove to Vanderbilt Legends Club's North Course. The Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance moves across southern Indiana from Victoria National Golf Club to French Lick Golf Resort's Pete Dye Course. (The Albertsons Boise Open presented by Chevron remains at Hillcrest Country Club, and the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship remains at the Ohio State University Golf Club's Scarlet Course.)
• In a change from 2023, the first three Finals events will not maintain alternate lists to fill the field to the corresponding size (156, 144, 120). Fields will play short if qualified players do not compete. The 75-player Korn Ferry Tour Championship didn’t have an alternate list in 2023 and will not in 2024.

Korn Ferry Tour Finals factoids

• Korn Ferry Tour points distribution is elevated for the Korn Ferry Tour Finals; tournament winners during the Finals receive 600 points, compared to 500 points for a standard event.
• Tournament purse size increases from $1 million (pre-Finals) to $1.5 million for Finals events.
• All four Korn Ferry Tour Finals events will be broadcast on Golf Channel.
• The first three Korn Ferry Tour Finals events feature a 36-hole cut to the top 65 professionals and ties, same as a pre-Finals event. There is no cut at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance.
• Eligibility for the Albertsons Boise Open presented by Chevron (Finals #1) is determined by a season-long points race across 22 events, culminating at the Magnit Championship in August.
• Prior to 2023, the top 25 on the Korn Ferry Tour Regular Season Points List earned PGA TOUR cards, in addition to 25 cards via a Korn Ferry Tour Finals Points List comprised of Nos. 26-75 on the Korn Ferry Tour, Nos. 126-200 on the FedExCup, non-members and medical extensions. There is no longer a category for Korn Ferry Tour Finals access based on FedExCup positioning.
