Best Places To Stay In Jalisco

The state of Jalisco has so much variety with a lot to offer. Everything from beach towns, mountains, forests, jungles, big cities, small towns and pueblo mágicos.

Here are the best places to stay in Jalisco – covering the variety of experiences this beautiful state can give you.

📍 GUADALAJARA: The third largest metropolitan area in Mexico, Guadalajara (GDL) is a big city but much slower paced than Mexico City . GDL has a ton of cool bars, clubs, restaurants and malls. I’ll be completely honest, I enjoy Mexico City a lot more than GDL. However, I still think it’s a cool place to visit and there are a ton of cool areas near GDL for day trips or weekend getaways.

vibrant street with colorful flags in Tlaquepaque

It’s also a great destination for bachelorette/bachelor parties or just any group trip. They have trendy restaurants that are great for big groups, fancy clubs, beach clubs, a ton of bars, excursions, resorts, Airbnbs and other smaller towns to visit nearby.

I normally don’t like super touristy towns but PV still feels quite local and traditional to me. The Old Town known as “Zona Romantica” is really charming with its cobblestone streets and beautiful architecture.

➡️ Vallarta Shores Beach Hotel

📍 SAYULITA: As mentioned above, PV is a great hub to get to other smaller towns such as Sayulita. This once sleepy little surf town with mostly local travelers has now become a popular destination for foreigners. I’ll be honest, I miss what it was before. But nonetheless, it’s now a fun place to go with a lot of bars, restaurants and boutique shops.

street in the main square in Sayulita

The best way to get to Sayulita is by flying into Puerto Vallarta. The town is about an hour and 15 minutes drive from PV.

me on the beach in Sayulita

Pro tip: if you’re looking for a chiller vibe go to San Pancho which is a smaller beach town just 15 minutes away.

➡️ Ximena Hotel Boutique

📍 AJIJIC: You could definitely stay a weekend or a few days in Ajijic but this could also be done as a day trip coming from Guadalajara. This lakeside gem is located an hour away (by driving) from GDL along the shores of the largest lake in Mexico, Lake Chapala. Charming streets, laid-back vibes and beautiful lakeside views make Ajijic a perfect weekend getaway.

AJIJIC sign by Lake Chapala

➡️ Casa del Sol Inn

📍 MAZAMITLA: This mountain town Pueblo Mágico is the perfect nature escape. Spend your days in cozy mountain cabins, going on hikes during the day, and just enjoying nature all around you. I stayed at an amazing bubble glamping resort that was such a unique experience. Check out the link below!

I rode 2.5 hours on the back of a motorcycle to Mazamitla from Guadalajara (would not recommend it – too long for me on a motorcycle). If you take a car it shouldn’t take more than 2 hours unless you’re going around traffic hours.

➡️ La Estela Bub ble Glamping

bubble glamping in the mountains in Mazamitla

📍 SAN SEBASTIÁN DEL OESTE: Nestled in the Sierra Madre mountains, San Sebastián del Oeste is a quaint colonial pueblo mágico that makes you feel like you’ve taken a journey back in time.

The best way to get to San Sebastian del Oeste is flying into Puerto Vallarta and the drive from there should be less than 2 hours.

Is Tequila a city in Mexico?

Tequila is a charming pueblo mágico (magic town) in Jalisco, Mexico. As you can see, they obviously have the best tequila tours in Jalisco being that it is known to be the birthplace of tequila.

Is Tequila, Jalisco worth visiting?

Tequila is definitely worth visiting! Indulge in the breathtaking views of agave fields, go on a tequila tour, visit distilleries, try some local food, and enjoy the quaint cobblestone streets in this magical town.

guacamole, salsa and limes at Cholula restaurant in Tequila

Where is the swing in Tequila, Jalisco?

The extreme swing is located just 10 minutes outside the town of Tequila.

What is the best month to go to Jalisco?

It really depends on where in Jalisco you plan to go and what you want to experience considering that Jalisco has beaches, mountains, big cities, and small towns. Generally speaking, the rainy season is around June to October. However, I’ve definitely been to Jalisco during this time without it raining but the summer months are really hot so for that reason, I would avoid it. It’s safe to say you’d be good to go around November to May.

Is it safe to travel to Jalisco, Mexico right now?

I’ve traveled to Jalisco several times by myself and I’ve generally felt safe. Is there cartel activity there? Yes. But I’ve traveled all of Mexico solo and with friends and I haven’t had any major issues. I feel like if you aren’t around certain situations or cause any trouble you should be fine.

Just like anywhere else in the world, practice safe measures and always be aware of your surroundings. (Don’t walk alone at night if the area is quite desolate, don’t flash your money or expensive things around, carry only what you need for the day, etc.)

This private experience consists of an exclusive tour and tasting at a family-owned tequila distillery, a visit to Arandas’ central plaza and church, and lunch at the best carnitas restaurant in the Highlands region.

*Please note this tour involves four hours of driving, two up and two back, but the scenery and company are fantastic, so sit back and soak it all in.

Tequila Tours from Guadalajara: Distilleries, Agaves, and Tastings

Visiting the Tequila Valley in Central Jalisco state is one of the world’s great culinary experiences. Much like visiting the Champagne region in France or Chianti in Italy, the Tequila Valley is home to the origin story of one of the world’s most popular beverages. The best tequila tours from Guadalajara include beautiful landscapes, ancient culinary traditions, and cool drinking establishments all over the region.

There are also a lot of tourist traps in the area. The best experiences require some research, advanced reservations, or a really good tour guide.

These are the best tequila tours for every sort of traveler including transportation, expert knowledge, and artisanal tasting experiences.

The Agave Experience Tequila Tour

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A deep dive into the history & culture of Mexico with a certified Tequila Master

It is easy to overlook the best things to do in Tequila behind the expert marketing of a big company.

Guadalajara is the capital of tequila country without a doubt. Tequila’s governing body, the Consejo Regulador de Tequila is located here. There is a whole industry of traditional cantinas, modern cocktail bars, and world-class restaurants. Most travelers will simply pass through the Guadalajara Airport and explore the city as they arrange transportation to the valley.

I have lived in this area since 2009 and dedicated a great deal of time to studying the history of the region. My friends in the industry have helped me identify the most authentic tours, distilleries, and experiences in the Tequila Valley. I want to help you craft a truly fulfilling tequila tour from Guadalajara with elements of history, culture, and culinary arts.

An Overview Of The Tequila Valley

tour jalisco tequila

The town of Tequila is just one of nine municipalities in the Tequila Valley . Many of the best experiences are found outside of the city center and require some transportation.

In addition to the tequila distilleries, the Guachimontones Pyramids tell the story of Native people who treasured the agave plant for thousands of years. The 16th-century Spanish haciendas have been converted into boutique hotels that exude rustic charm.

A tour of Hacienda el Carmen in the Tequila Valley

I highly recommend visiting the small towns that ring the Tequila Volcano if you want to get to know the authentic side of Mexico

My personal feeling is that the best option for Tequila is a self-guided tour renting a car , making your own reservations, and spending a week ‘puebleando’ hopping from one town to another visiting cult-favorite distilleries and staying in historic haciendas . There are some real luxury experiences to be found.

The Best Tequila Tours from Guadalajara

tour jalisco tequila

I want to help you have a good time in Tequila finding a unique experience for your preferred style of travel.

There are a lot of different experiences to be found along the Ruta del Tequila. Some people are going to want to visit the best tequila brands using artisanal processes . Other people might be more interested in the scenic background for some Instagram reels. My mom was more interested in visiting Chapala than Tequila but ended up enjoying both.

Not everyone has the time or the desire to drive around the backcountry of Jalisco or take public buses after a long day of drinking. These day trips leave from Guadalajara and handle all of the transportation. Most of them offer hotel pickup and will return you back where you started.

1. The Agave Experience Premium Tequila Tour from Guadalajara

Autoclave steam oven for cooking agaves.

Small Group ⭐️  RATING:  4.92/5 Stars |   TOUR LENGTH:  8-10 hours |   BOOK NOW Private Tour Group ⭐️  RATING:  5.0/5 Stars |   TOUR LENGTH:  8-10 hours |   BOOK NOW

The Agave Experience organizes professional-level tours of agave-producing regions of Mexico. These experiences bridge the gap between beverage and culture, offering unrivaled access to the people and regions that gave rise to tequila and mezcal.

The tour guides are some of the most educated agave enthusiasts in Mexico. Many of them have master’s degrees in tequila from the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara and are passionate about the topic.

This is one of the highest-rated tequila tours from Guadalajara on the market. They offer both small group tours and private tours handling all the transportation.

The tour guides at Agave Experience know all the secret spots so you can reserve a private tour and select which distilleries, pyramids, and cantaritos. Somebody else might want to see a hacienda, the Juan Beckman Gallardo Cultural Center, and the particular distillery.

The right guide makes all the difference.

You will visit two tequila distilleries, the agave fields, El Arenal, Amatitán, and Tequila.

  • Tequila tasting
  • Expert descriptions

In addition to tequila tours from Guadalajara, there are also raicilla tours from Puerto Vallarta and mezcal tours from Oaxaca.

These tours are a good option for hospitality industry professionals with a cursory understanding of the agave spirits industry. They will trace the industry’s current state back to the origins of early Mexico.

2. The Fire Tour: Tequila and Guachimontones in One Day

tour jalisco tequila

⭐️  RATING:  4.92/5 Stars |   TOUR LENGTH:  8-10 hours |   BOOK NOW

If you only have one day for a tequila tour from Guadalajara then this is the tour to take. It is the best of the Ruta del Tequila in one day and the most cultural tour on the list. It is a full-day tour because that van covers a lot of ground. Depending on traffic the tour lasts anywhere from 8 to 10 hours.

Visiting the pyramids gives historical context to the tequila beverage. The original people treasured the agave plant and used it to create a plethora of tools, crafts, and carbohydrates. Aguamiel was extracted from the live agaves while cooked agave hearts were eaten and fermented.

The tour guides are an encyclopedia about the history of the region and the beverage. They will pick you up from just about anywhere in Guadalajara and show you two different sides of the Tequila Volcano. The tour starts early at Guachimontones when the weather is still cool. It is a little walk up a hill to get to the pyramids.

After the pyramids, the van heads to the public market in Tequila which is a great option for lunch. Each person can choose regional specialties from a number of different restaurants and food stalls. This is not included in the price of the tour but the prices are affordable. Just outside the market is the main plaza of Tequila where small kiosks sell tequila cocktails called cantaritos.

It is just enough time to see some of Tequila’s main landmarks like the National Tequila Museum before taking off for the tequila distillery tour. The last stop before heading back to Guadalajara is the traditional hacienda-looking factory with beautiful gardens.

At the end of the tour returns to where you were picked up at your Guadalajara hotel or hostel.

3. Mickey Marentes Tequila Tours

Independent tequila distillery tours from Guadalajara

Mickey Marentes is a legendary tour guide around the Tequila Valley. He provides luxury tours for the real tequila connoisseur who wants to explore all the different types of tequila focusing on additive-free and artisanal tequilas.

tour jalisco tequila

Mickey Marantes Tours Include:

  • Hotel pickup transportation from Guadalajara
  • Two tequila distillery tours
  • A visit to the agave fields
  • A Tour of Downtown Tequila
  • Artisanal tequila tasting
  • Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks
  • Lunch is included

The small group tour starts and ends in Guadalajara. He also offers a private tour that could arrange pickup anywhere in the Tequila Valley.

Both tours include round-trip transport from the city of Guadalajara to multiple distilleries, the enchanting town of Tequila, and photo stops to appreciate the agave landscape.

There are high-end tequila tastings and professional-level explanations of the tequila-making process. There are a number of variations in the fermentation process and distillation, and aging in different types of oak barrels.

4. José Cuervo Express Tequila Train

Sculpture garden at Mundo Cuervo

The Jose Cuervo Express is one of the most luxurious ways to experience Tequila. One of only three operating passenger trains in Mexico, the Jose Cuervo Express is a living piece of Mexico’s history.

Every one of the club cars has been immaculately restored and is a testament to old-world Mexico. Jose Cuervo is famous for selling tequila but also for creating the Mundo Cuervo tourist attraction evoking the soul of Mexico. They are masters of marketing and the imagery is something you will remember for a lifetime.

There are several ways to plan your trip on the Jose Cuervo Express. One direction will be on the train and the other direction will be on a bus that stops at the Jose Cuervo agave plantation for a harvesting demonstration. You can choose to take the train to Tequila in the morning and return on the bus or you can start with the bus and return on the train.

tour jalisco tequila

The tequila-tasting portion of the trip is on the train and some people may prefer to drink earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon. They offer a wide range of house-made tequilas.

The day trip also includes a tour of the Jose Cuervo Distillery, La Rojeña, the oldest distillery in the region.

Mundo Cuervo often reminds me of an amusement park for adults. A lot of thought has been given to every detail and there is more here than you can see in just one day.

No matter how many times you return to Tequila it is likely that you will find something new on the Mundo Cuervo campus like a beautiful garden, a museum, or even a concert venue.

The train offers several different packages with nicer club cars and a more expensive selection of tequilas. The tour needs to be booked in advance. During peak vacation time the train may be sold out for weeks in advance.

I recommend booking this tour directly on  their website  because there are more options to choose from.

  • Train Station Address :  Av. Circunvalación Agustín Yáñez 11, Moderna, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico
  • Train Schedule : Saturdays at 9:00 AM

5. Camina GDL Tequila Full Experience

Camina GDL is one of the best tour operators in Guadalajara. They offer an excellent tour through the Tequila Valley visiting two different artisanal, additive-free distilleries.

The first distillery is set in the agave fields so you can see the harvest and learn about what makes the agave plant so special. They prepare and serve a rustic breakfast that is cooked over a bonfire which is followed by a tequila tasting.

The second distillery is in the heart of the Pueblo Mágico Tequila, Jalisco. It is one of the oldest tequila distilleries in Mexico. There is a beautiful tour that includes a three-course lunch and tequila tasting at a boutique hotel.

What the Camina GDL tequila tour includes:

  • Transportation, snacks, Guide
  • Entrance to the distillery
  • Tasting of 8 types of tequilas
  • Harvest and plant your own agave
  • Breakfast and tequila tasting in the agave landscape
  • Lunch 3 courses and a cocktail

The folks at Camina GDL are a lot of fun. They know Jalisco really well and want to share the absolute best of the region with you. I guarantee you are going to enjoy their tequila tour.

6. Full-Day Guided Tour to Amatitán & Tequila – The Most Affordable Tour.

One of the highest-rated and most affordable tours to Tequila and Amatitán. What I like about this trip is the inclusion of Amatitán in the itinerary. It is an authentic Mexican ranching town with a series of caves that are the perfect place to listen to local lore.

The Tres Mujeres tequila distillery is beautiful and Instagram friendly but they make just an ok tequila. Their liqueurs are very popular with people who do not like high-proof spirits.

One of the reasons that this tour is so affordable is that they do not offer hotel pickup. Everyone meets at the Glorieta Minerva and the bus leaves from there. There are a maximum of 38 people on the tour.

7. Tequila Distillery On The Way to Lake Chapala

tour jalisco tequila

Small Group ⭐️  RATING:  4.92/5 Stars |   TOUR LENGTH:  8-9 hours |   BOOK NOW

This isn’t my favorite tequila tour from Guadalajara. It is more of a Lake Chapala tour that happens to have a quick tequila tasting along the way.

The tour leaves from the Glorieta Minerva at 10:30 AM and heads for Lake Chapala. About halfway down the freeway to Chapala is the Vicente Fernandez Ranch and the Los Magos Tequila Distillery.

If you have been to one of the top tequila distilleries it might be a little bit of a letdown. If you are more interested in visiting the Lake Chapala area, a quick tequila tasting is always a great idea.

The tour stops in San Juan Cosalá, and Ajijic, and includes a quick ride on a catamaran.

8. Tequila Express Tour Bus

Not to be confused with the Jose Cuervo Express tequila train, the Tequila Express is a tour bus that provides round-trip transportation from the Camara de Comercio in Guadalajara to the Casa Sauza distillery in Tequila town.

There are several different packages depending on the food, beverage, and transportation style that you prefer. All the tours include a full-day tequila tour with a certified guide and a tour of the distillery and agave plantation.

Guests have plenty of free time to explore the magic village of tequila before heading back to Guadalajara.

Independent Tequila Distillery Tours

Tequila Fortaleza distillery tour

There are a couple of different experiences to be found in Tequila, Jalisco. A lot of people are in town to drink cheap tequila and get wasted. On the other hand, I want to promote the cultural side of Tequila. There is a lot of history and refined culinary experiences if you do a little bit of research.

The best tequila distillery tours do not offer walk-up service. Reservations must be made in advance. Travelers are responsible for their own transportation and hotel accommodations. This is the best way to experience not just the town of Tequila but the whole Tequila Valley.

I recommend visiting at least one artisanal tequila distillery. If you have spent your whole life drinking commercial tequila, the tequila that is made at Fortaleza and Cascahuin will change your life. I still remember when I tasted a true tequila for the first time. It is a big part of why I am writing all these articles. I love good tequila.

It is perfectly safe to rent a car in Guadalajara and drive out to the Tequila Valley. Discover Cars is the best place to rent a car because they source the car rental and the insurance policy from different partners. You can get a premium insurance policy for less by using Discover Cars.

9. Fortaleza Tequila Distillery

Tahona stone crushing agave for tequila

In my humble opinion, Tequila Fortaleza offers the most important distillery tour in Tequila, Jalisco. They are a boutique tequila producer making an old-fashioned product for aficionados.

The founder of Tequila Fortaleza comes from a long line of tequila makers that helped define the style of tequila and establish the regulatory counsel that protects tequila from cheap imitations. He is also at the forefront of the Renaissance in tequila making.

Fortaleza makes tequila using ancestral methods that are labor-intensive and time-consuming. They are going back to original production methods to make tequila like their grandparents used to drink before accountants and cost-cutting changed the recipes.

Tequila Fortaleza has created a boutique, distillery tour experience reminiscent of wine country. I highly recommend contacting them a week before your visit to see what they have available.

  • Fortaleza Distillery Address : Calle Tabasco 153, Centro, Tequila, Jalisco
  • Contact Information: Website Contact

10. Fabrica de Tequila El Cascahuín

Tequila Cascahuín is a small, independent distillery making some of the finest tequila in Jalisco. They are using old-school, artisanal methods of cooking, fermenting, and distilling. You should pick up a bottle of their high-proof tequila plata to bring back to the United States because you will not find it outside of Jalisco.

Before you visit one of the large, multinational distilleries you need to see how tequila was made in the old days. These guys are preserving the culture and traditions of a time long past.

  • Cascahuin Distillery Address: Ferrocarril 140, San Juan de Dios, El Arenal, Jalisco
  • Contact Information : Facebook

11. El Tequileño Distillery

El Tequileño distillery and boutique hotel

El Tequileño was founded by Don Jorge Salles Cuervo in 1959. Yes, that Cuervo. They have a boutique hotel on the back of their property and a nice tour that can be combined with a tequila tasting and lunch.

  • Tequileño Distillery Address : Calle Chiapas 51, Tequila, Jalisco
  • Contact Information : Website Reservations

12. La Rojeña Distillery: Mundo Cuervo

Jose Cuervo has one of the most popular tequila tours.

When I was in high school I had a hand-me-down Jose Cuervo t-shirt that I adored. I think that everyone can agree that their marking department is one of the best in the world and they have the most famous tequila on the planet. The experiences that Jose Cuervo has created are some of the best things to do in Tequila, Jalisco.

As you would probably imagine, José Cuervo has a large footprint in Tequila. The Jose Cuervo La Rojeña distillery is the oldest distillery in Latin America with plenty of options for guided tours. In addition to the Jose Cuervo distillery, there are event spaces, hotels, restaurants, retail boutiques, and much more. The whole area surrounding the distillery is beautiful and very Instagram-friendly. They have done a good job preserving the colonial charm of rural Jalisco. Even if you don’t tour the Jose Cuervo factory you need to check out Mundo Cuervo.

  • José Cuervo # 73, Centro, Tequila, Jalisco // Website

13. Casa Herradura

Casa Herradura tequila tours from Guadalajara

Doña Gabriela Pena Lozada 405, Hacienda San José del Refugio, Amatitán, Jalisco

One of the world’s most recognizable tequila brands also has a stunning hacienda tour. When it comes to big-name tequila brands there are a couple of options for touring distilleries. You can take the train in from Guadalajara or you drive in and just take the walking tour. There are a couple of different price points depending on the tequila tastings that you are interested in. Honestly, the expensive tasting doesn’t seem necessary because I am not that into the añejo and extra añejo tequilas that cost a ton of money.

Jima agave harvest demonstration on tequila tour

Tours are in English and in Spanish but make sure to call ahead to get the schedule. Intermediate-level Spanish speakers will struggle to understand the technical vocabulary of the distillation process.

The Best Tequila Tastings in Guadalajara

Interestingly, it is more common to find classic cantinas that serve all the commercial tequilas and has a very small selection of artisanal tequilas from small distilleries. It is worth the effort to search out tequilas that are made without artificial flavoring and colorings.

Jalisco is the best place in the world to learn about the different types of tequila .

14. El Gallo Altanero

Guadalajara tequila bar tours

Calle Marsella 126, Colonia Lafayette, Guadalajara, Jalisco // Instagram

The first option is to make a reservation or head over to the Gallo Altanero tequila bar. They have one of the best agave programs in the world and host plenty of visiting bartenders learning about Jalisco’s historic agave culture.

Not only do they have an exceptional selection of different brands of tequilas but they know how to describe them and prepare them in cocktails. The Gallo Altanero was named one of the 50 best bars in North America in 2022 .

15. Mezonte: Destilados Mexicanos de Agave

Calle Argentina 299, Colonia Americana, Guadalajara, Jalisco // Instagram

Mezcal and tequila tours from Guadalajara

In addition to learning about just tequila, there is a whole world of agave-based spirits out there. Mezonte Destilados de Agave has classes about the cultural significance of the agave to the Mexican people. Pedro Jiménez, the owner, is an expert and has set up an NGO that promotes, supports, and preserves the production and practices of traditional agave spirits. Mezonte is more of a classroom and reservations are recommended. He also owns a bar called Pare de Sufrir where you can taste a WIDE variety of agave spirits.

16. Agüita Agaveria

tour jalisco tequila

Calle Marsella 167, Colonia Lafayette, Guadalajara, Jalisco // Facebook

Agüita Agaveria is not focused specifically on tequila but on agave spirits in general. They have a fine selection of hard-to-find tequilas from small producers and a respectable cocktail program. This is an excellent place to go for a tequila tasting.

I have learned a lot about the geography of Jalisco from the tequila-producing pueblos. It is fun to plan tequila tours to the pueblos that make your favorite tequilas.

Tequila Tours FAQ

These are the most commonly asked questions that I see when people are planning a trip to Guadalajara and Tequila.

What is Tequila?

Tequila is Mexico’s national drink, but it is also the name of a volcano, a town, and even a region with 11 unique municipalities. Each municipality is a little town with cobblestone streets, a lot of charm, and hospitality. There are plenty of tequila distilleries throughout the region and many of these tours combine a distillery tour with some other cultural activity.

The beautiful blue agave fields are a designated Unesco world heritage site and a top destination in Mexico. The magical town of Tequila is the main attraction but there are a lot of different tours exploring Jalisco’s historic tequila culture.

Blue agave fields near Tequila, Jalisco

How far is Tequila from Guadalajara?

The town of Tequila is located 65 km (40 miles) from downtown Guadalajara. The fastest way to get to Tequila from Guadalajara is the toll road which takes just over an hour.

The free road adds about 30 minutes to the drive but is more enjoyable because of the agave landscapes and pueblos along the way.

Stopping for tacos in Arenal or cocktails in Amatitan will be a highlight of the trip to Tequila.

Taking a bus or a train will be significantly slower than driving a car.

When is the best time to visit Tequila?

The best time to visit Tequila is in the fall after the rains have stopped and the agave landscapes are a vivid shade of green. The temperatures are mild and there is a lot going on in the region including festivals and fairs.

Winter is enjoyable too and most Canadians will laugh at what the locals call cold.

Spring is the hottest time of year when it can be uncomfortable to be outside without a had in the middle of the day.

Summer is the rainy season when it rains for a little while most days in the afternoon.

Where to Stay in the Tequila Valley?

Most of these day trips to Tequila do not require an overnight stay. However, the Tequila Valley has some spectacular accommodations.

Best Hotels in Tequila, Jalisco

Best Hotels in the Tequila Valley

Hacienda El Carmen is the best place to stay in the Tequila Valley

My personal favorite is the Hacienda El Carmen boutique hotel. It is located on the other side of the Tequila Volcano right down the road from the Guachimontones archeological site. There is a tequila distillery on site and one of the most romantic hotels in Mexico.

📍 Luxury Option – Hacienda El Carmen Hotel & Spa

Is Tequila Safe?

Tequila, Jalisco is a very popular destination for international travelers. It is a pueblo mágico and a part of the UNESCO World Heritage program. There is a competent police force in the area and I can’t recall a major security issue that has made the international news.

The problem with safety in Tequila is alcohol-related. It is really easy to drink too much cheap or adulterated tequila and people can get out of control. Know your limits and know how to identify a bad situation.

Much like Napa Valley, Sundays are full of day trippers that should not be driving. Try to avoid being on the road on Sunday afternoon heading back to Guadalajara.

A Final Note On The Best Tequila Tours from Guadalajara

The best tours of Tequila from Guadalajara

I hope you found something valuable in this article that helps you make the most out of your time in the Tequila Valley. Remember, Tequila is more than just one pueblo, it is the whole valley.

It wasn’t until I had been to Tequila three or four times before I found the activities that are really worth the trip. On my first couple of trips I thought the place was a big tourist trap.

Make a plan before you get there. If you wait until you get to Tequila you won’t get to see the best distillery tours or restaurants.

There are amazing experiences to be found in this part of Mexico if you are willing to look. A tequila tour from Guadalajara is a great way to find the best experiences. Go with a pro!

My Guide to Tequila, Jalisco 2024

  • by Nellie Huang
  • June 12, 2024

Tequila is arguably one of the most fun, vibrant spots in Mexico. Here’s my complete guide to visiting Tequila Jalisco, including where to stay and which distilleries to visit.

Did you know that tequila is actually named after the town where it originated? The town of Tequila is in fact one of the cutest pueblos mágicos or magical towns in Mexico , with pastel-colored colonial buildings and cobblestoned streets surrounded by agave fields. The beautiful agave landscapes and age-old distilleries of Tequila have even earned it  UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

On our recent trip to Guadalajara , we made a detour to Tequila and had a great time exploring the historical town, visiting the agave plantations and distilleries, and tasting all kinds of tequila. The town itself is an absolute delight, while the surrounding landscape is reminiscent of the wild landscapes depicted in movies about Mexico. In this guide, I’ll share with you how to get to Tequila, things to do in Tequila, and best places to stay, eat and drink.

Where Is Tequila Jalisco?

By day tour, how to get around tequila jalisco, best time to visit tequila jalisco, how many days in tequila jalisco, is it safe to travel to tequila, hop on the jose cuervo express train, jose cuervo tequila tour, casa suaza tours, wander around the plaza principal, admire the templo de la concepcion, visit the national museum of tequila, eat at the mercado municipal, visit los abuelos museum, try cantaritos, party at cantarito el guero, stay in a tequila barrel, budget: hotel delicias tequila, mid-range: hotel villa tequila, luxury: matices hotel de barricas, tacos el chino, la antigua casona, la posta restaurant, travel insurance for mexico, is tequila jalisco worth visiting, my guide to tequila jalisco.

Located just one hour from the bustling metropolis of Guadalajara , Tequila offers a super fun getaway for travelers seeking a taste of Mexican culture and history. Renowned as the birthplace of tequila, the town draws tourists from all over the globe.

Many flock to the town to learn about the production of tequila, indulge in local cuisine, and immerse in traditional music and dance. Whether you’re a tequila enthusiast or simply curious about the iconic beverage, a trip to the town promises a newfound appreciation for this Mexican spirit.

How To Get To Tequila Jalisco

Guadalajara is the nearest big city to Tequila, and it’s just 1 hour away. The most convenient option is to get there is on the Tequila Plus bus. Purchase tickets are priced at 107 MXN (US$5.50) for a one-way trip. Buses depart every hour or so in both directions, and the journey typically takes around 1.5 hours. If you want to be picked up from your hotel, book a car transfer through Bookaway.

Alternatively, rent a car, like we did. It’s an easy and short drive. I always book our car rental through DiscoverCars.com as they’ve consistently given me the best rates and customer support. Search for car rentals in Guadalajara here.

Another great option is to join a day tour from Guadalajara. The tours usually provides transport from your hotel, brings you around the town and includes visits to the Jose Cuervo distillery. This full-day excursion is one of the best tequila tours in Mexico, and has received excellent reviews. Book your tour here.

Getting to Tequila Jalisco From Guadalajara

Getting around Tequila on foot is easy because the town is compact and pedestrian-friendly. You can easily explore the town’s attractions, from local shops brimming with artisanal treasures to inviting restaurants serving up traditional Mexican cuisine.

But if you want to explore the surrounding agave fields and distilleries, then a car will definitely come in handy. We rented a car and it was useful to get from town to our hotel, and the nearby distilleries. It definitely helped us make use of our time in Tequila and see as much as we could.  Search for car rentals.

Tequila Jalisco - Walking around Tequila Jalisco Mexico

The best time to visit Tequila is in February, March, and April. These months mean favorable weather conditions and fewer crowds, making it ideal to explore the charms of this enchanting town. I visited Tequila in February; I can attest to the great weather. From January to March, the weather is at its most inviting, with temperatures hovering around 34°C (93℉) in the day.

It’s best to avoid visiting during Mexican holidays , as it can get really crowded. Summer is not the best time to visit Tequila as it can get really hot and humid in the day. Regardless of the season, Tequila is a great place to visit all year-round.

Tequila Jalisco - Stay In A Tequila Barrel

Many opt for a quick day trip to Tequila as it’s just an hour from Guadalajara and it’s a small place you can see in a day.

But that would be a shame, as the town is worth more of your time. I spent three days in Tequila and I was really glad to have time to explore everything there is to do here.

Tequila Jalisco - day trip to Tequila

The U.S. State Department recently updated its travel advisory for Jalisco. Highway 70, the scenic route from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara, has been removed from the travel restrictions list. This highway passes through three charming pueblo mágicos , each with significant cultural heritage to the state.

Tequila is a touristy place, and visitors who don’t get involved in drugs will be fine. I didn’t feel unsafe in any way during my trip but you should stay informed about current conditions and heed any local advisories.

Things To Do In Tequila Jalisco

Beyond tequila drinking, there are a few different things to do in the town of Tequila that are fun and interesting!

The best way to get to Tequila is onboard the Jose Cuervo Express , an exclusive vintage-style train in Mexico. This unique journey will transport you from Guadalajara to Tequila, through agave fields, with a series of tequila tastings and a visit of the Jose Cuervo distillery in Tequila town.

The interior of the train is adorned with exquisite wood-paneled walls and offers comfortable seating. Some carriages will have a bar conveniently located inside. As part of the experience, you’ll participate in a traditional toast featuring one of the country’s premium tequilas.

It’s not a cheap experience though – tickets for the Jose Cuervo Express start at 2,590 pesos ($127) and vary in price based on the chosen level of luxury for your train car. The train operates exclusively on Saturdays, typically every second week.

Join A Tequila Distillery Tour

The main attraction of Tequila is undoubtedly its iconic tequila distilleries. I strongly recommend the Jose Cuervo Tequila Tour to La Rojena. La Rojena is the home of Jose Cuervo, the world’s most famous tequila.  Book your tour here.

It is the oldest distillery globally and the largest producer, supplying a third of the world’s tequila. The Jose Cuervo Tequila Tour goes for 440 MXN ($22.50). It offers visitors a chance to witness the intricate tequila-making process and sample exclusive tequilas rarely found elsewhere on the planet.

Tequila Jalisco - Jose Cuervo Tequila Tour

As the third oldest distillery globally and the second-largest tequila producer, Casa Suaza offers various tour options starting from 230 MXN ($12). Their most popular tour includes a visit to an agave plantation, a tour of the distillery, complimentary tastings, and a refreshing margarita amidst their picturesque gardens.

You can also explore other distilleries such as Don Julio and Tequila Fortaleza , each offering unique insights into the tequila-making tradition. The tours are usually led by English-speaking guides.

Tequila Jalisco - Casa Suaza Tours

Tequila has a colorful historic center, where the cobblestone streets and colonial buildings effortlessly transport you back in time. The plaza principal, or main square, is a hive of activity especially in the evening when the temperature drops. This is also where you’ll find the “Tequila” sign. Snap a photo here if you like cheesy shots!

Tequila Jalisco - the PLaza Principal

The Church of the Immaculate Conception, built in 1649, is a majestic building made of stone blocks in colonial architectural style located opposite the main square of Tequila.

It has a single tower with a double-arched bell tower and on the façade the entrance arch is flanked by Doric columns and has a niche with an image of San Miguel Arcángel. The interior of the church is of a single nave, standing out for its vaults, stained glass windows and for its main altarpiece of neoclassical style.

This museum offers an intriguing walk through the origin of the tequila drink from the pre-Hispanic times until modernity.

In the central courtyard, you can see one of the old mills that were used to crush the huge agave pineapples and obtain the original must. The museum also shows the old farming implements and tools that were used in the cultivation and care of agave plantations.

Tequila Jalisco - National Museum of Tequila

Located in the heart of the historic center is the municipal market, where the locals eat. It is the best spot to try authentic Mexican foods here, specifically antojitos (street foods) like birria (a soupy goat stew).

pobDoña Mary’s food stand is one of the most popular spots here, offering home-cooked foods with a village flavor. Her quesabirria was one of the best I’ve ever tried, and so were the tacos de carne asada.

Tequila Jalisco - Eat at the Mercado Municipal

In the beautiful Los Abuelos Museum, you’ll get to learn the origin and history of the Sauza family, also known as the “aristocracy of tequila”. Don Cenobio Sauza founded La Perseverancia distillery in 1873, and began to produce the first tequilas in Mexico.

Since then, more than 5 generations of Sauzas have continued the family tradition of making the best tequilas. In this museum, you can admire the tools used 150 years ago in the production of tequila, as well as the furniture in use during the time.

Tequila Jalisco - Los Abuelos Museum

Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of the town by sipping cantaritos , a tequila-based cocktail, with grapefruit and lime juice, served in a clay cup known that helps keep the drink cold. As you stroll through the charming streets, you’ll meet numerous vendors selling cantaritos of various sizes and styles.

Once you’ve finished your drink, simply take your cantarito to any of the other stands scattered around town for a refill, usually costing around 60 pesos ($3.52).

Tequila Jalisco - Cantarito As A Souvenir

Just 15 minutes outside of Tequila, lies Cantaritos El Guero , a local hotspot bursting with energy. Here, you can share massive cantaritos with friends, alongside mouth-watering cuisine and live music that sets the mood for a memorable evening.

Tequila Jalisco - cantaritos to buy

There are so many things to do in Tequila it’s worth staying the night in Tequila – you’ll find one of the most unique places to stay in Mexico right here in town. We stayed at the Matices Hotel de Barricas , where rooms are housed in giant tequila barrels, surrounded by agave fields. You get the sensation you’re in the middle of tequila backcountry, even though you’re just minutes from town.  Check rates.

Every hotel guest is welcomed to a free guided tour and tequila tasting at their distillery. There are English and Spanish tours that run twice a day and the guides are fun and engaging. There’s also a gorgeous cave restaurant with giant Cathedral ceilings and a bottleshop selling all kinds of tequila.

You’re also free to wander around the agave field and snap photos with artistic sculptures. I highly recommend a stay here, even if it is just for one night.

Where To Eat in Tequila Jalisco

Trust me when I say that eating al pastor tacos should be high on everyone’s agenda when exploring any part of Mexico. Each bite is a delightful adventure for your taste buds as the flavors of the meat and accompanying toppings vary from town to town.  Read reviews.

Located within the charming Hotel Solar de las Animas, the restaurant offers a tantalizing taste of the rich flavors of this quaint Mexican town.   Read reviews.

At La Posta Restaurant, you are transported into a world where every aspect embodies the essence of authentic Mexican ranch food.  Read reviews.

I always recommend travelers to buy travel insurance , whether you’re traveling Mexico for a year or a week. It will cover you in the event of emergencies or mishaps like theft and loss of luggage.

Safety Wing  is the most popular travel insurance company for worldwide travel. I use their  Nomad Insurance plan , which covers COVID-19 as any other illness as long as it was not contracted before your coverage start date.

Tequila is plenty of fun, whether you’re a tequila fan or not. From the captivating distillery tours to the charming streets filled with music and laughter, Tequila offers a great escape from the metropolis of Guadalajara and gives a peek into small towns of Mexico.
