Stand Up Paddle Boarding from  Makena  on Maui’s sunny south shore, commonly referred to as  Turtle Town , you’ll have the beautiful back drop of Haleakala.

On normal trade wind days South Maui is blocked from the wind in the early mornings making it an ideal location for  SUP lessons . Even if the winds do start to blow, Makena Bay is generally protected allowing us to tuck inside away from the wind. Read more

If you have not downwinded before, you’ll find her incredibly passionate about SUP and a great coach to start your down winding with to get the basics down solidly. Jaycey has a unique way of coaching using earphones and microphones so that the pupil can hear instructions in real time and correct on the famous Maliko run. I’m a big fan of real time error correction as a way of motor learning and its just fantastic for SUP to change your technique in tough real world conditions. The biggest thing Jaycey taught me was how to read the water much better than I had. I have to admit that after years of down winding and now 6 M2Os I was pretty clueless about where the bumps were and how to catch them properly. She taught me to look for the very fine reticular pattern in the water and to follow that into the bump. Worked like a charm Got more bumps than ever!!! Jaycey also volunteered to coach me during this year’s M2O – what a great experience! I can still hear Jaycey shouting above the wind: paddle paddle paddle…brace…breeeeeeeattttth. Now, whatever I tense up, I can hear Jaycey saying….breath I do and then I relax! After the race I paddled in Cardiff California and ran into her rat pack, who ware totally in love with Jaycey and her passion for SUP and where she is revered as the local SUP rock star. Peter was our guide. super nice guy and very knowledgable. we had an interesting launch with some unexpected wave surges but it made it just that much more fun. we saw a few turtles and the sea was a bit churned up so not a ton to see but it didn't matter. we had a great paddle, learned so much about local nature and history and then just snorkeled around in the water. nice touch of bringing pineapple to snack on which, if you haven't had it, is totally addictive and like no pineapple i've ever eaten. it's like liquid syrup. all around fantastic trip; thanks peter - wendy b, foster city.

Paddle above a shallow reef teeming with easily visible tropical fish and Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, and take in stunning views of historical Olowalu and Ukumehame valleys above the surface.

Your guide will share interesting facts about the sea turtles, tropical fish species and seals unique to Hawaii along the way. Haleakala, Molokini Crater, Kahoolawe, Lanai, and Molokai loom in the distance, and you could even spot Hawai’i’s Big Island on a clear day.

Fun Fact: Modern stand-up paddle boarding began in Hawaii in the 1940s, when instructors such as Duke Kanahamoku would stand on boards to get better views of incoming waves and other surfers.

What is SUP?

Stand Up Paddling  is kind of like surfing and kind of like kayaking. You stand up (or kneel if you want to) on a SUP board, which is a little thicker than a surf board, and you navigate with a long paddle like you would in a kayak. While you ride small waves on a stand up paddle board, generally you’ll be paddling on top of calm waters and viewing the marine life below.

• When should I book my paddle board Lessons ? Make your reservation as soon as you can choose a date. We are a small business so we fill up very quickly. Whale season and the holidays is the busiest time of year . (December to April) Don't miss out, book early, this is once in a life time paddle board adventure on Maui.
• When is the best time to do paddle boarding lesson ? Best time 7.15AM. The earlier the better due to wind and sun. 2nd Best 9.15AM. The early times are usually best due to weather conditions but some days the wind is low. The earlier you go the better chance of it being like glass and sometimes it makes for easier paddling due to no resistants in the ocean.
• What is the best tour for a beginner? Our paddle board lesson out of Makena and Kaanapali are the best for beginners the calm waters of these 2 locations make it easier to learn the basics of paddle boarding. All of our stand up paddle tours are private tours. Its more personal and we get to share more deeply. ''2 person min 10 person Max''
• Why is Maui the best place to learn how to paddle board? Maui is the best place to learn how to paddle board because we have the ideal conditions for all guest coming to Maui. The easy beginner coves of makena beach make it super easy and fun. We have Intermediate paddle board locations at Olowalu and lahaina. Advanced paddle board locations for the pros downwinders on north shore. *During whale season you can paddle out to see the whales from about 100 feet keeping our distance we can enjoy natures most amazing show, no tv needed. • When is whale season ? Starting on December 1st and finishing April 30th.
• Do you supply the paddle board gear for the day ? Yes. We Supply Paddle Boards. Paddles. Video camera (Go pro Footage). Reef Safe Sunscreen. Snack granola bar and piece of fruit. Professional paddle board guides.
• What is not included with stand up paddle tour ? We don't supply ! Transportation to the Location (Can be organised at a fee from $50 up) Snorkel Rental Board Shorts Swimwear Towel
• What do I need to bring to the sup tour? - Bikini - Bathing suit or board shorts for men - Big Smile - Towel - Water bottle (clean drinking water)
• Are the sharks ? - Yes. - This is an ocean and this is where they live. - I would not take you on a tour if I thought you were not safe. - We wouldn't GO on a tour if I didn’t think we were safe either! - We will be with you every paddle of the way. You are safe. - We can Supply Shark Bands that use magnets to keep the shark away if it comes close, but we have never needed them. - We always have a couple with us while paddling, - Sharks play a important role in the ecosystem usually hunting the injured or old fish that need to be removed from the reef.
• Will I see a Shark ? - 99.9% of the time no. - Sharks a hunters and don't really like to be seen. - Sharks prefer hunting in murky waters and darkness - That's why its important to always go when there is daylight.
• What if I get motion sickness ? -Be proactive, Prepare before you get here. -Maui is small so better to organise before you get here or.. -Please visit you pharmacy here on island or at home and sea if you can get Bonine its a motion sickness medicine that doesn't leave you feeling drowsy in the ocean. -Ginger Drops also help which can be found at natural food stores (Mana Foods) Paia. -Seasick bands can be purchased online at Amazon or local Pharmacy.
