About PGAClubTracker.com

I’m what most people would call a “Golf Nerd”. I love playing golf, watching golf, working on my golf swing, and nerding out golf equipment. Fortunately I’m alive during a time where information is so readily available for nerds like me and where I can satisfy nearly all my curiosities about golf and golf equipment with a simple Google search. Nowadays there are a number of websites that publish articles that cover PGA Tour pros and “What’s In The Bag” (or “WITB” as it’s often shortened to), which give you a real insider’s view into the clubs and equipment the Tour pros are playing each week. But I have found one particular problem with a lot of this information: it’s not stored and presented in a consistent, standardized format or database. So it’s not trivial to answer what should be trivial questions like:

  • Which Tour pros play Mizuno irons? ( Find out )
  • What’s the most popular Driver brand on Tour? ( Find out )
  • I know that Justin Thomas plays with Titleist muscle-back blades, but who else does? ( Find out )

So on a whim, I decided to start reformatting and logging this information for the top golfers into my own database. The result of that work is now made available to anyone at PGAClubTracker.com -- think of it like an IMDB for PGA Tour players’ golf clubs and equipment. So follow me down the wormhole!

How Far PGA Tour Players Hit Every Club In The Bag

The latest Trackman data has revealed the average distances and speeds from shots hit on the PGA Tour

Rory McIlroy hits a tee shot at the 2023 BMW Championship on the PGA Tour

In this age of ultra-long hitters and ever-increasing technology among the golf-equipment sector, the distances and speeds in the professional game continue to go one way - up.

It is not quite the same among the amateur population , however, with Arccos data via the USGA and R&A in March 2022 revealing that the average male golfer - with a handicap - hits their total drive around 215 yards , a number that has remained relatively consistent over the past five years. Meanwhile, in the women's game, the average total-driving distance for players of all abilities is just shy of 148 yards.

But the latest numbers released by Trackman show that PGA Tour professionals are sending it a long way past that, as you would expect. The average carry distance for a PGA Tour pro with a driver in hand during 2023 was 282 yards.

Their club speed was usually around 115mph with a driver and the resulting ball speed averages 171mph, reaching a max height of just 35 yards off the ground.

Despite a 33-yard drop-off between driver and 3-wood, in regard to carry, PGA Tour players are still averaging 249 yards carry with the latter and bettering the average distance your leading amateur can manage with the big dog.

Rory McIlroy holds his finish on a drive

Rory McIlroy is the longest average driver on the PGA Tour and is known for his high ball-flight

From 3-wood down, between 5-13 yards of carry was lost as you move through the bag. PGA Tour players typically hit a 5-wood 236 yards in 2023, while - surprisingly - the number dropped to just 231 with a hybrid.

The numbers between the two aforementioned clubs are particularly interesting to take a closer look at, with players generating 106mph club speed with a 5-wood and 102mph with a hybrid. The angle of attack was almost identical, and the smash factor for both clubs was exactly the same at 1.47 out of 1.5.

Ball speed differed by 7mph (156mph - 5w/149mph Hy) but the spin rate difference was much more noticeable at 4322rpm for the 5-wood and 4587rpm for the hybrid. Ultimately, though, the total carry resulted in just a five yard drop off for the shorter club.

Moving into the irons, PGA Tour players averaged 218 yards carry with a 3-iron (100mph CHS/145mph BS) and 199 yards with a 5-iron (96mph CHS/135mph BS), and as the club becomes shorter - predictably - so do the numbers.

When looking at the 7-iron, the total carry distance on the PGA Tour was 176 yards thanks to 92mph club speed and 123mph ball speed. PGA Tour players struck their shortest club - the pitching wedge - around 142 yards (carry) in 2023, according to the Trackman data.

2025 PGA Tour schedule look: How will the West Coast swing stack up next year?

On the surface, the 2025 PGA Tour schedule released this week looks much like the schedule from this year. Oh, there might be a sponsor name change or two for some tournaments, something that is going to be happening more in the coming years, but in general, the schedule remains the same.

The status quo of 2025 is good news for the West Coast swing of the tour, including The American Express event in La Quinta on Jan. 16-19. What has been growing as a part of the PGA Tour over the last decade or so has now established itself as major part of this year and a great way to kick off the new season.

The seven weeks of the West Coast swing will once again begin with two weeks in Hawaii, the Sentry and the Sony Open. The Sentry, formerly the Tournament of Champions, is one of the eight signature events on the tour, including three on the West Coast. The idea of three signature events within seven weeks is one reason many of the top players in the game have started playing more golf on the West Coast swing. There are FedEx Cup points to be had, after all, points that can assure a player a spot in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

The Sony Open should be especially emotional in 2025, since the 2024 winner was Grayson Murray, who took his own life in May, just four months after winning in Hawaii.

After the two Hawaiian weeks, the tour will return to La Quinta for what will be a highly anticipated The American Express tournament. Not only should players like Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele be in the field, but Nick Dunlap will return as the defending champion. The week will stir memories of Dunlap’s victory as an amateur last year, the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since 1991.

The other two signature events on the West Coast are the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles, hosted by Tiger Woods. The change at Pebble Beach to a signature event last February meant a radical change in that tournament, with a limited pro-am and a reduction from three courses to two. Still, the event seemed to work well, even if traditionalists had an issue with the changes.

At the Genesis, nothing significantly changed with the signature designation, mostly because top golfers love to play Riviera Country Club and because Woods remains the host.

If there are issues on the West Coast, it is with the other two tournaments. The Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Club in San Diego is wedged between The American Express and the Pebble Beach events. Once a bright light on the West Coast swing with golfers like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jon Rahm loving the South Course, last year’s Farmers Insurance drew a weaker field than normal, perhaps because it was the week before a signature event. Farmers Insurance has already announced it will end its sponsorship in San Diego after 2026.

The Waste Management Phoenix Open is sandwiched between the Pebble Beach event and the Genesis tournament, another problem in scheduling for golfers who like a week off before a big event like a signature tournament. Again, that led to a weaker-than-normal field for Phoenix last year, though that could change in 2025.

Top courses, big names

Of course, the Genesis tournament will draw particular interest since it might be one of only a handful of times golf fans will see Tiger Woods play during the season. Woods has played only the four major championships and the Genesis so far this year.

Toss in some of the best golf courses on the PGA Tour, like the Pete Dye Stadium Course at PGA West, Pebble Beach, Spyglass, Riviera and the South Course at Torrey Pines, and the West Coast will have some of the best storylines, best players and best courses for a two-month period on the PGA Tour. It is still more than four months away, but fans on the West Coast can start looking ahead now.
