Popular Jakarta Day Trips

Enjoy indonesian food in central bogor.

Located 53 km south of Jakarta, Bogor is one of the most popular Jakarta day trips options. It will offer you a wide range of Indonesian food. Recently, many new cafes and restaurants are mushrooming on the narrow streets of Bogor. Drop by the area of Taman Kencana, Central Bogor, where you can find a row of great restaurants lined up along one alley. There is a famous Kedai Kita restaurant where people go for their famed BBQ Grilled Pizza (Pizza Bakar BBQ). After that, don’t forget to get delicious desserts at Death by Chocolate or Klapertaart Huis.

Where to stay: The popular hotels here are Santika Hotel and Hotel Salak the Heritage * .

Visit The Historical Sites in Cirebon

Another place in West Java you have to visit on your Jakarta day trips is Cirebon. Cirebon offers you the richness of their culture and history. Visit Kasepuhan Cirebon Palace to see the relics from the Islamic Kingdom in Cirebon. Also, satisfy your cravings by having a bowl of Empal Gentong, which you can easily find around this city. Also, before heading back to Jakarta, buy some colorful Batik patterns in Trusmi Batik Village as souvenirs.

Where to stay: The recommended hotel in Bandung is the Aston Cirebon Hotel & Convention Center * , a four-star hotel with a contemporary design.

How to get there: You can take a car or simply take the train, which takes three hours to travel from Jakarta. There are Cirebon Express and Argo Jati *. Both depart from Gambir Station.

Shop and get around in Bandung

This city is quickly becoming one of Java’s most popular places to visit, especially with the number of restaurants, cafés, factory outlets, and boutiques growing rapidly in Bandung. It is no wonder many people even come here as part of their Jakarta day trips.

Stroll along Jalan Riau, where most of the boutiques are located. After that, head to Jalan Braga and Jalan Asia Afrika to dwell in the old city ambiance. Alternatively, get closer to nature with Bandung’s tourist attractions, such as Situ Patenggang Lake, Tangkuban Perahu, and Keraton Cliff (Tebing Keraton).

Take amazing photos at Gunung Pancar

Gunung Pancar is surrounded by pine trees in Sentul, West Java. You can also camp and enjoy your leisure time by hammocking here. If you venture further into the national park, you will find spring water, one of the local people’s sources of clean drinking water. Since it is so close by, this is highly recommended for one of your Jakarta day trips.

How to get there : It is only a two-hour drive from Jakarta city. Use the Jagorawi toll road and exit in South Sentul. A direction map will help you easily reach Gunung Pancar.

Rent a car with a driver from Jakarta *

Head up to Puncak (The Peak) for tea plantations or paragliding

Puncak might be the destination where most of the local people go on the weekend. Therefore, a tip is to know when the one-way road system is conducted. Usually, starting from 09.00-11.30, it will be only a one-way direction to Puncak, while the one-way back to Jakarta is from 15.00-17.00. Enjoy the vast view of tea plantations or visit the strawberry garden at Berry Farm. For those who like a more challenging experience, try paragliding here!

How to get there: It will be simple to take a car. Use a long toll road and exit in Ciawi.

Jakarta Day Trips – Off the beaten tracks

Find beautiful beaches in banten.

Banten is another area that is easy to reach, with an approximately three-hour drive from Jakarta. Since Banten is located in the lowlands, there are several beaches you can visit. Our favorites are Sawarna Beach, Tanjung Lesung Beach, and Sangiang Island. After getting your skin tanned at the beach, you can move on to learn some history in Old Banten (Banten Lama). Here, visit the Keraton Kaibon, built in 1815 and then destroyed by the Dutch in 1832.

Where to stay: You can stay at Serang * or Cilegon * for quick access to the beaches.

How to get there: Take a bus to Merak, Cilegon, Jakarta, or Serang. Book your bus tickets in advance at Easybook.com * .

Explore the unique Baduy Tribe

Baduy is located in Lebak Regency. This tribe decided to live without electricity or vehicles. They also do not use shampoo or soap. They chose to stay by these rules and not follow any form of modernity. Baduy is divided into Inner Baduy (Baduy Dalam) and Outer Baduy (Baduy Luar). If you want to experience this unique way of living without modernity, you should look to Baduy Dalam. Baduy Luar is the gateway to Baduy Dalam.

How to get there: You can take the train to Rangkasbitung from Jakarta’s Tanah Abang station . Then transit at Aweh Terminal and continue your journey to Ciboleger Terminal, the entrance gate to Baduy Tribe

Picnic at Selabintana

Another place that can be reached just 120 km from Jakarta is at the foot of Pangrango Mountain. Surrounded by big pine trees, it is really fun to picnic here in the greens. Roll out your picnic blanket and bring some of your favorite snacks. Otherwise, you can also try the popular food from West Java here called Cuanki, a dish consisting of tofu, meatballs, and dumplings.

How to get there: Take the bus * to Sukabumi Terminal and then take angkot number 15. You will arrive right in front of the entrance of Selabintana.

Fishing or boating at Situ Gunung

Another charm of West Java, near Jakarta, is this artificial lake called Situ Gunung. You can go fishing and boating here to enjoy its tranquility. You can also just sit at the lakeside and observe how local people pull in the trawl to trap the fish. If you are feeling active, you can jog uphill for 4 km to Curug Sawer. Be prepared to get some swimming in, too, under the waterfall.

How to get there: Go to Bogor Station to take the train to Sukabumi *. Get off at Cisaat Station. For convenience, it is advisable to rent a public minivan to reach Situ Gunung, which can take up to 8 people and is affordable. Otherwise rent a private car with a driver * to take you there!

Dive and snorkel at Thousand Island

Thousand Island (Pulau Seribu) does not consist of thousands of islands; it has approximately 342. One of the most visited islands here is Pulau Harapan, which 4 hours away by ship from Jakarta. People say this island has the best snorkeling spot in Thousand Island. If snorkeling is not enough, you have to explore more by diving deep under, where you will find underwater paradise. You can also visit turtles in a sanctuary in Pulau Kelapa Dua and eagle care in Pulau Klotok.

How to get there: You can depart from Muara Angke on a normal boat or Marina Ancol on a more luxurious boat with a more expensive ticket.

Making a journey to these places will make good Jakarta day trips. It is a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of Jakarta city. It is sometimes a welcome break or sometimes a sought-after adventure. These places are easily visited in a day from Jakarta and are much recommended!

Things to do in Jakarta in a day

National monument.

National Monument - One day in Jakarta

At the heart of Merdeka Square, in Central Jakarta, a 132-meter obelisk towers into the sky. This gleaming white object is the National Monument — known locally as “Monas”, it’s a symbol of Indonesia’s struggle for independence. Open to the public in 1975, the obelisk sits on a wide, square base and is crowned by a flame. At the base of this flame, at a height of 115 meters, is a viewing platform, reached via an elevator.

The National Monument actually houses the first red-and-white Indonesian flag that was flown during the Proclamation of Independence in 1945. And underneath the monument itself lies a museum dedicated to telling the story of Indonesia’s road to independence from colonial rule.

Istiqlal Mosque

Istiqlal Mosque - One day in Jakarta Indonesia

Istiqlal Mosque is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the sixth-largest in the world. Situated on Jalan Taman Wijaya Kusuma in Central Jakarta, the mosque boasts enough room to host 120,000 worshippers within its walls. It was designed by north Sumatran architect Frederich Silaban and took 17 years to build, finally opening in 1978.

This huge contemporary structure covers an area of 22 acres and is clad in shining white marble. It’s an impressive example of Islamic architecture in Southeast Asia and certainly worth a visit (especially for fans of design). Guides are on hand to take visitors around the mosque and give them an insight into this landmark.

Merdeka Square

This landmark square lies at the heart of the Indonesian capital. With its name translating to “Independence Square”, this one-square-kilometer space offers up a wide open area for locals to take a break from busy city life.

It was originally called Konigsplein (“King’s Square”) and became an important part of the city when the government moved to the area from the old center of colonial Batavia. Centered around the National Monument, the square is edged by government buildings and has often been a gathering point for protests and rallies.

Merdeka Palace

Merdeka Palace - One day Jakarta itinerary

Occupying the north side of Merdeka Square, construction on this presidential palace — one of six situated across Indonesia — began in 1873. Today the imposing building is used as the official residence of the president of the Republic of Indonesia. It was here, on the 27th of December 1949, that the Dutch flag was taken down for the final time and replaced with the flag of an independent Indonesia. This marked the end of 350 years of colonial rule.

Visitors may enter the palace but only as part of a tour. Otherwise, make sure you arrive in time to see the dramatic ceremony of the changing of the guard, which takes place on the last Sunday of every month.

Jakarta Cathedral

Jakarta Cathedral - 1 day Jakarta itinerary

This Roman Catholic cathedral was completed in 1901, following the collapse of the original building in 1890. With its three towering spires (60 meters tall) and ornate neo-Gothic facade, Jakarta Cathedral stands seemingly in opposition to the more modern side of this Southeast Asian capital; it looks more like something from northern Europe.

Inside, visitors can admire its stained-glass windows and take a moment to soak up its peaceful atmosphere. Guides are on hand to offer informative tours of the building and its impressive architecture.

Museum Nasional Indonesia

Museum Nasional Indonesia in Jakarta

This sprawling museum is a must-visit destination in Jakarta. Taking up space in a 19th-century colonial building, the spacious rooms here display an array of artifacts. These range from artwork depicting historical events to textile collections and models of prominent architecture from across the Indonesian archipelago.

day tour in jakarta

It’s a modern, easy-to-digest deep dive into the history and culture of Indonesia. Free English-language tours of the museum are available (the schedule can be found online in advance).

Glodok (Chinatown) Market

Glodok (Chinatown) Market - Jakarta one day itinerary

Glodok is Jakarta’s Chinatown, outlined specifically for the city’s Chinese population back in 1740 following a massacre. Today it’s the biggest Chinatown in Indonesia and purportedly one of the biggest in the world.

day tour in jakarta

Its shopping district or market today is the place to shop for almost anything: fabrics, electronics goods, perfume, jewelry. There is also an array of places to eat once your window shopping and browsing have made you hungry; some dishes, such rujak Shanghai encim, can only be found in Glodok. A must for foodies and curious travelers.

Batavia Old Town

Batavia Old Town- things to do in Jakarta in one day

Once the headquarters for the Dutch East India Company, and later the center of administration for what would become Jakarta, this old portion of the city is the place to go to see how things once looked.

Batavia Old Town - 1 day in Jakarta

Batavia Old Town feels worlds away from the modern business districts and skyscrapers of Jakarta, with centuries-old buildings, canals, 17th-century bridges, and an atmosphere of crumbling colonial culture. It’s picturesque: think tree-lined streets, food carts, colorful sights, and plenty of museums to stop by.

Jakarta History Museum

Jakarta History Museum - 1 day Jakarta itinerary

Housed in an impressive white-washed Dutch colonial building on Fatahillah Square, Jakarta History Museum is the place to go to learn about the long history of the city. The building itself, built in 1627, is today referred to as the Former Town Hall but was more of a central hub of administration and law.

day tour in jakarta

Remnants of its former use can still be seen, namely in the form of prison cells in the courtyard — used to detain 19th-century Indonesian freedom fighters.

Wayang Museum

Wayang Museum - Jakarta in a day

Located within a building dating from 1912, in Fatahillah Square, the Wayang Museum is dedicated to the Indonesian art of shadow puppetry. Wayang are flat, wooden puppets with moveable limbs attached to sticks, used to tell old stories from Indonesian folklore, including the Ramayana.

day tour in jakarta

The museum boasts a fascinating collection of these puppets, not just from Indonesia but from mainland China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and India.

Fatahillah Square

Fatahillah Square - one day in Jakarta

Fatahillah Square lies at the heart of old Batavia, the colonial center of Jakarta for centuries. This charming cobblestone square is a charming place to soak up some easy-going ambiance and is home to a number of historic buildings that point to the long history of the city.

The Former Palace of Justice, now the Museum Seni Rupa Dan Keramik, was built in 1866, while the 17th-century Former Town Hall is now home to the Jakarta History Museum. Packed full of history, Fatahillah Square is also a popular meeting place and a good spot to get a bite to eat.

Old Batavia Café - One day in Jakarta

This must-visit eatery takes up space inside a colonial building (built by the Dutch in 1805). Opening its doors in 1837, this venerable institution serves up a mix of contemporary Indonesian cuisine, coffee, and pastries, as well as cocktails.

The decor remains retro and features photos from decades past hung on the wall, with vintage furniture and other design details to charm visitors. It’s the perfect place to go to take a break from sightseeing and soak up a slice of Jakarta’s history firsthand.

Sunda Kelapa (Old Port)

Sunda Kelapa (Old Port) - Jakarta itinerary

Meaning “Coconut of Sunda”, Sunda Kelapa was once the principal port for the Sunda Kingdom. Situated on the estuary of the Ciliwung River, the 500-year-old port is now only a minor hub of trade and transport, but it remains an important (and interesting) place to learn more about the history of the area.

Sunda Kelapa (Old Port) in Jakarta

Once upon a time, this Sunda Kelapa would have been alive with trading ships, fishermen, and markets, though you can still see brightly colored schooners that ferry goods to and from the outer islands. A walk along the water’s edge here is fascinating.

Best Time To Visit Jakarta

Where to stay in jakarta, jakarta itinerary, day 1 itinerary in jakarta, day 2 itinerary in jakarta, day 3 and beyond, staying safe in jakarta, day trips from jakarta, faq on jakarta itinerary.

If you are visiting Indonesia then there is a strong chance you’ll be passing through it’s capital, Jakarta. Unless perhaps you are purely here to visit Bali in which case you may not. There are two things to consider when planning an itinerary for Jakarta:

If you’re looking for long, sunny days and as little rainfall as possible, come between June and September. This is probably the best time to plan a Jakarta itinerary, as you’ll be able to enjoy all Jakarta’s offerings in their full capacities.

The rainy season can sometimes bring flooding in the lower-lying parts of the city. But even if you visit during the ‘wet season’ between October and May, you’re unlikely to ever be cold. Do bring a water proof jacket though.

The daily temperature will seldom drop below the high 60s Fahrenheit (15c), and rain is mostly intermittent, even in the rainy season. On many days the rain will actually be a welcome relief from the soaring subtropical temperatures.

The second consideration is whether you’d prefer a slightly less busy time of year. In the month of Ramadan, the city slows down as people observe the holy month. Many businesses may close during prayer time, and some locals may leave the city to visit family for Eid.

On the other hand, some hotels have been known to offer discounted rates over this time, as tourism tends to slow down accordingly. Before visiting Jakarta, you may want to check when Ramadan will be observed.

Here is a month-by-month breakdown of average conditions you can expect in Jakarta through the year, not taking into account the month of Ramadan, which follows the Muslim lunar calendar and changes every year. It should give some idea of When to visit Jakarta/

Where to stay in Jakarta ? The expats in Jakarta have nicknamed the city ‘Big Durian’, after a local fruit. Apparently, this is because they think of the city as being the New York of Indonesia.

Both cities are notorious for traffic, but Jakarta does not have the advantage of a subway system. With this firmly in mind, planning where to stay can help you save lots of time getting to where you’d like to go. Buses and taxis are plentiful, though walking can be a faster option for close-by activities at peak times.

The Sudirman Central Business District – SCBD for short – is basically the CBD of Jakarta. As such, it’s the most visited tourist area for entertainment, clubs, malls, hotels, and shopping.

Ancol is a popular seaside area and has several attractions in that area. The Sea World aquarium and water, eco and adventure parks make it a popular Jakarta itinerary item with families.

Kemang is a good option if you’re partial to nightlife spots. There are also lots of expats here, so you’re likely to find a good mix of entertainment, food and drink options. Ultimately, where to stay when planning a trip to Jakarta depends on your budget.

It offers direct access to the HXC mall, good food, and modern amenities like free Wi-Fi and very comfy beds. Of the hundreds of hotels in Jakarta, the Harmoni consistently rates in the top 20 for single and business travelers, despite being a budget hotel.

The Hermitage, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel | Best Luxury Hotel in Jakarta

jakarta itinerary

The 1920s touches at this art-deco boutique hotel in the Menteng district make it one of the most beautiful in all of Jakarta. Spacious rooms and a rooftop bar for those wonderful warm sunsets. If the on-site glass-top cafe or gastronomic bistro isn’t for you, the area is known for a vibrant live music scene, restaurants and cocktail bars to add to your to-do list.

Six Degrees Hostel | Best Hostel in Jakarta

jakarta itinerary

It’s hard to find someone who’s had a bad experience at Six Degrees. Besides its convenient location, the key attraction is its rooftop garden and bar. Sunsets from here are quite an experience. The ultra-friendly staff will also arrange walking tours of the city and free use of the hostel’s bicycles. The mini-cinema, gym and free breakfast are the clinchers – making Six degrees the best value hostel in Jakarta.

The key to a great 2-day itinerary in Jakarta is balance. A little bit of everything on each of your 2 days in Jakarta is better than a one-day overload of one particular type of activity. Fortunately, Jakarta is big enough to try this approach, with similar but different options to satisfy all ages and interests.

Getting around a city as crowded as Jakarta can be challenging. As a rule of thumb: if it’s close enough to walk, that’s probably the best option anyway. But there are public and private transport options, like taxi cabs, which operate much like any other major city.

jakarta itinerary

Motorcycle taxis or ojeks can be hailed like any conventional taxi. The upside is that you can negotiate a rate before you take the ride. In recent years, ojek co-ops have started using apps similar to Uber as well. Note that many Insurance companies do not cover you for any accidents that happen on motorbike taxi’s.

Slightly upgraded from that are trikes – a lot like the famous tuk-tuk from Thailand . These tend to be pretty efficient if your party is small enough to use them. For the most part, ojeks and trikes are good for short distances within the city.

Here’s a tip: If you can avoid taking the bus, do so. They’re generally a lot slower, and sometimes quite irregular. This might therefore interfere with any plans on your Jakarta itinerary.

Istiqlal Mosque | Jakarta Catholic Cathedral | Monas Tower | Atlantis Water Adventure | Taman Anggrek Mall

We’ll start the Jakarta itinerary with some fascinating history and culture, and then onto some fun relief from the heat. We’ll end the day with a theme park excursion the whole family can enjoy, and we’ll even do some shopping on the way.

Day 1 / Stop 1 – Istiqlal Mosque

  • Why it’s awesome: It is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia.
  • Cost: Free, but a $1 USD – $2 USD gratuity for your guide is expected
  • Food nearby: Kantin Koperasi Istiqlal is ideal for a quick snack with a local flavor.

It’s only fitting to start our Jakarta itinerary here, as no Jakarta trip is complete without it. Istiqlal means ‘independence’, and the mosque was built to commemorate Jakarta’s independence.

This mosque is one of the most beautiful places in Indonesia . The huge white dome of the Istiqlal Mosque that rises above the nearby treetops is impossible to miss. The mosque is an active house of worship, as well as school, but allows tourists to visit its second floor.

Istiqlal Mosque

There are five floors in all. Four of them form balconies from which to observe the main area. A guide will offer to take you around to the areas in which you are allowed. Bear in mind that Islamic rules regarding footwear and clothing are observed which means dress respectfully. But a coverall gown will be provided if needed.

The mosque (or masjid) can host up to 120, 000 people, which is an incredible sight to witness. It is likely to be fuller on Fridays. Many dignitaries have visited the mosque, including US Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Prince Charles.

The Istiqlal Mosque and adjacent Catholic Cathedral are two major Jakarta points of interest.

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Jakarta Catholic Cathedral

  • Why it’s awesome: A unique piece of European cultural history within Asia
  • Food nearby: Miyama Japanese and Teratai Chinese restaurants

Here’s a piece of trivia worth knowing: The official name of the Catholic cathedral in Jakarta is Gereja Santa Perawan Maria Diangkat ke Surga . Its official English name is St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral.

The Cathedral with its distinctive gothic spires is the perfect second stop for our day one itinerary, as it is directly opposite from the Istiqlal Mosque. The proximity of the two buildings symbolizes the nation’s desire to celebrate both its diversity and unity.

The Jakarta Catholic Cathedral

The beautiful building was opened in 1901, but is still a very active church, as crowds attend masses – sometimes to overflowing. At other times, visitors are invited to take a look at the museum or the bookshop.

The museum is especially interesting, as it contains various artifacts and records that detail the legacy of Christian faith in the region. Most fascinating of all are the various old clerical robes and hats, documents, paintings, goblets, and other trinkets. They truly offer a glimpse into an important past for Indonesia.

In the catholic tradition, the church is adorned with various statues and symbols. Most notable are the key statues of Mary and a depiction of The Pietà.

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Monas Tower

  • Why it’s awesome: Monas offers visitors a sense of what independence meant to the Indonesian people
  • Cost: $1 USD
  • Food nearby: Nasi Goreng Pak Kumis is great for a local-flavored snack.

We’re a short walk away from another one of the major Jakarta landmarks, so let’s stop by Monas National Monument to pay our respects to this nation. The monument project was initiated by Sukarno, the first president of Indonesia, as a symbol of the nation’s independence. It was completed after his death in 1975.

This beautiful building stands an impressive 137 meters in Merdeka Square, and offers several points of visual and experiential interest. Start in the yard, where the walls bear relief sculptures of Indonesia’s most important historical events. Here you can trace the Majapahit Empire’s rise and fall, the arrival of the Dutch, the road to independence and beyond.

Monas Tower

Push on into the Indonesian National History Museum and the Meditation Hall. The most impressive of the exhibits here are the copy of the original proclamation of independence and the gilded map of Indonesia.

For an additional thrill, you can access a viewing platform near the top of the tower. At 117 meters, it provides a breathtaking view of the city.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – Atlantis Water Adventure

  • Why it’s awesome: It’s a welcome and cooling distraction on a hot day for all ages
  • Cost: Weekdays $7 USD; Weekends $10 USD
  • Food nearby: A variety of food stalls within the park

Time to add some fun and games to our Jakarta itinerary. Hop on a taxi and head north towards Danau Ancol, where we can enjoy the Atlantis Water Adventure water park. Remember to pack your swimming costume (naked swimming is not permitted), and take note that the park makes a point of saying it’s not just for kids.

The jewel in the water park’s crown is the Multistructure, a new eight-slide monster. But there’s also Crazy, the highest and longest slides in the park. Reckon you can do a 22 meter-high, 150 meter-long glide?

Legs of three people at the top of a waterslide at a waterpark

Our favorite is the Skybox. It’s a glass enclosure that flushes you down an 80-degree tube at 56km/h! It doesn’t last long, but the sensation will stay with you for a while.

Nine separate rides or pool areas can be found within the park, making it a great place in Jakarta to go waste a couple of hours or even an entire day.

Insider Tip: Be aware that the park does get crowded on weekends, so be sure to show up early or simply choose a weekday that suits you better.

Day 1 / Stop 5 – Taman Anggrek Mall

  • Why it’s awesome: It’s the biggest mall in Jakarta, and one of the biggest in Southeast Asia!
  • Food nearby: Food court and many options

Let’s head back into the city, to the biggest mall in Jakarta to satisfy our shopping bug. The Mall Taman Anggrek (or “Orchid Garden Mall”) is a spectacular seven-floor experience that plays host to nearly 18 million shoppers per year – Definitely one of the major Jakarta attractions.

The mall itself is quite a sight. Sitting above the seven lower floors are seven residential towers, which can be seen from miles around. The mall itself contains around 400 stores, covering an impressive 360 000 square meters.

Who Needs Map shopping

As with any modern mall, there’s a grand variety of shops to explore, from fashion to jewelry, electronics and more. There are 20 exhibition areas so something will always be happening at one of them.

Of special note is the mall’s ice rink! Yes, this mall has its very own ice rink attraction – ideal for when you need a break from exploring the 400 retail outlets.

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

Jalan Surabaya Flea Market | Museum Wayang | Pasar Baru | Ancol Dreamland

Welcome to day two. We’ve got more shopping and unique cultural aspects of Jakarta to explore today. But there’s also a ton of fun to be had with a visit to an amusement park, and we will end your 2 day itinerary in Jakarta with some live music to rock to!

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Jalan Surabaya Flea Market

  • Why it’s awesome: It’s like a fascinating walk through time
  • Cost: Free, but you might buy a few things
  • Food nearby: Local stalls for snacks and food

Let’s start the second day of our Jakarta itinerary by checking out the old-time goods at the most famous flea market in Jakarta. The Menteng flea market also goes by the names Jalan Surabaya, or Pusat Barang Antik.

Though it’s defined as a flea market, it’s actually a collection of stalls and shops that specialize in items that appeal to the antique collector. That said, you don’t really need to understand antiques to shop here – you can simply look for something you like.

Jalan Surabaya Flea Market

The most important factor is your bargaining skills. Most market vendors will expect you to haggle (so make sure you know how to barter ), and that’s fair because sometimes you’re taking their word for it that the item in question is indeed antique.

It’s all part of the fun, really. You can find items of furniture, curios, jewelry, trinkets, and even pottery. There may be several items from Indonesian and even Dutch history here. Whatever you might be seeking from a bygone age, there’s a good chance you’ll find it here.

There are a couple of stalls offering food if you’re on a break. You can lose a good couple of hours of your Jakarta itinerary just talking to the vendors and browsing through the goodies on offer. If you spend one day in Jakarta, be sure to spend it here.

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Museum Wayang

  • Why it’s awesome: Explores a unique aspect of Indonesian culture
  • Food nearby: Cafe Batavia is a popular and highly-rated eatery nearby

The Museum Wayang – or puppet museum – may not be top of mind when thinking about places to visit in the city. But this guided tour is fascinating and dives deep into the culture of puppetry tradition in Indonesia.

UNESCO proclaimed Indonesian puppets as “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”, which gives you some idea of the cultural importance of these fascinating items. The guides are exceptionally informative, as they are puppeteers themselves.

Museum Wayang

Interestingly, the museum also displays Indian puppets. The traditional Wayang performances are based on Ramayana and Mahabharata of Indian mythology. If you’re lucky, there might be a performance or a puppet-making workshop taking place when you arrive.

The walk among life-size models is intriguing. The puppets are usually made of wood and buffalo hide and take months to make. If you’re totally in love by the end of the tour, stop by the souvenir shop and consider buying a puppet of your own. (Remember to bargain!)

Day 2 / Stop 3 – Pasar Baru

  • Why it’s awesome: If you’re looking for the widest range of market goods to browse and buy, this is your place.
  • Food nearby: Goku restaurant (vegetarian Indian) and Tropik (ice cream!) are highlights.

If you’re able to hold off eating up to now, you’ll be rewarded as you visit Pasar Baru, in Jakarta’s busiest locale. Some call Pasar Baru “Little India”, though it has several major cultural influences including Dutch and Chinese.

The main attraction is, of course, its market. Here you can find almost anything and everything, from materials (silk and satin) to clothes to electronics (cameras and radios).

Pasar Baru

But what makes it worth doing around lunchtime is the choice of street food you can try. Pop down alleyways and side streets, and you’ll find small eateries that serve fish, meat, noodles, and almost any locally-flavored snack you can think of.

An interesting side-note is that there are a few religious locations in the area that you can visit. One popular site is the Sin Tek Bio temple, built by Chinese farmers in the mid-1600s.

You’ll spend a few hours here, as the area is pretty big and there is lots to see and try.

Day 2 / Stop 4 – Ancol Dreamland

  • Why it’s awesome: A broad selection of activities all in one area
  • Cost: $2 USD per adult and per car at the main gate. Add Fantasy World from $15 USD, Sea World from $6 USD, and Atlantis from $9 USD per person. Some rides may cost extra.
  • Food nearby: There are plenty of eateries and restaurants in the resort.

Time for a fully-designed tourist experience – we need at least one on this Jakarta itinerary. Taman Impian Jaya Ancol (or Ancol Dreamland) is a resort that is specifically designed as a tourist attraction complete with shops, beaches, parks, and other recreational facilities.

You can enjoy a marina, more than 70 eateries, an art market, a gondola ride, a theme park, two beaches and more.

The Gondola ride is a cable car experience that is definitely a highlight, as you can see the surrounding area from above – a gorgeous sight, especially in the evening. Attached is a theme park, Dufan, which has more than forty rides including the roller coaster named Hallintar!

Ancol Dreamland

If you’re feeling really courageous, try the most notorious of the rides, the Tornado and Hysteria!

The kids will also enjoy the aquatic park SeaWorld, which includes alligator and shark pools. Beyond the aquatic theme, there’s also an eco-park to explore, offering green-themed edu-tours around Eco-Energy, Eco Care, Eco Nature, and Eco-Art.

A bonus is that some of the restaurants here are open 24 hours, so if you’re a late-night reveler, you’re good to go in Ancol.

jakarta itinerary

Six Degrees Hostel

It’s hard to find someone who’s had a bad experience at Six Degrees. Besides its convenient location, the key attraction is its rooftop garden and bar.

  • Free Breakfast

Thousand islands | Gedung Kesenian | Museum Layang-Layang | War Cemetery | Kidzania

You lucky fish! If you’re wondering what to do in Jakarta for 3 days or maybe what to do in Jakarta for 4 days, there a few other offerings to consider. Here are a few more places to consider for a 3 day itinerary in Jakarta and beyond.

The Thousand islands

  • Get out of the city hustle and bustle
  • Tropical beaches to replenish the soul and the body
  • It’s best to do over a weekend in Jakarta

If you do have more time beyond your 2-day itinerary in Jakarta, consider a boat ride out to explore a few of the literal thousand islands to visit in the Indonesian archipelago . A full weekend to sit on a beach and relax is ideal, but the boat ride only takes an hour or two.

Some say a classy beach resort is the best place to stay in Jakarta. Of the best are Pulau Bidadari, which is the closest, and Pulau Macan, which is popular with honeymooners and eco-tourists.

The Thousand islands

You can get to most of the islands by speedboat from the Marina Ancol resort for around $15 USD. Here’s a tip: If you want to opt for a slightly cheaper way to get to the islands try Kali Adem harbor in MuaraAngke. This is a fishing jetty, but you could score a cheap trip to an island from here, where privately or via ferry for $3-5 USD.

If you want to go from island to island once you’re there, several resorts will let you rent boats to island-hop. This would be another enviable addition to your Jakarta itinerary.

Gedung Kesenian Jakarta

  • A feel of an old Euro-style theater
  • Shakespeare’s Othello was the first-ever performance here
  • The premiere concert hall in Jakarta

Take an evening out to attend a performance of an opera, play or symphony at this amazing old colonial-era theater.

This beautiful old theater was commissioned in 1821. Over the years, it has served many functions. For example, during World War II, the occupying Japanese army used it as a military headquarters for the region.

Gedung Kesenian Jakarta

The building also served as a headquarters for groups during the Indonesian push for Independence. It has even been a university building. Today it serves as one of the city’s main opera houses and theaters. Hosting regular performances of classics and modern works.

Museum Layang-Layang

  • Another most unusual museum to marvel in
  • Kite making, ceramics and batik workshops on offer
  • The founder and owner still works here as the main guide

By now you’ve realized that Indonesia has a fondness for puppets. It also has a special place reserved for kites, of all things. In the unusual but quaint Museum Layang-Layang, it is the latter that is celebrated.

In a traditional-looking house in Pondok Labu, South Jakarta, Endang Ernawati opened this monument to a passion that seems unequaled. There are over 600 kites on display here, and some of them are incredibly unique.

Museum Layang-Layang

Visitors usually marvel at the smallest (2 cm) and the largest (26 meters). But you’ll also find the strange, like a duo of kites that need to be flown together to produce a sound, not unlike a flute! You may also be intrigued to find the kite that is flown at a traditional wedding.

Among the other highlights is a giant 3D horse and cart, and bamboo and banana-tree leave constructed flyers. The museum  hosts workshops specially for children where kids can make their own, and adults can paint theirs. All the while, the guide will offer interesting bits and pieces on the history of kites in Indonesian culture.

Jakarta War Cemetery

  • A serene and respectful monument to War heroes
  • Commissioned by the Commonwealth and Dutch authorities after World War II
  • Gates opened upon request on weekdays

If you’re a cultural or historical tourist, the War Cemetery in the suburb of Menteng Pulo is a somber reminder of the devastation of World War II on the region and its people. It’s a definite item on any history buff’s Jakarta itinerary.

The cemetery contains the graves of Indonesian, Dutch and commonwealth (English, Indian, Pakistani and other) forces. It commemorates the soldiers lost during the Japanese invasion in 1942 and the subsequent re-taking of the region.

Jakarta War Cemetery

At the center of the cemetery stands the Cross of Sacrifice, which can be found in many Commonwealth war cemeteries around the world. The Dutch section of the cemetery contains a small chapel.

What makes a visit here so enriching is the many stories that can be learned from the plaques and stones, especially in the British section of the graveyard. There are around 1200 graves in all, including those belonging to POWs who died during the war, and even a few given to heroes of the Indonesian Revolution.

  • A cutting-edge approach to edutainment and fun in a Kids Park is indeed possible
  • Kids can learn about professions and how money works
  • Adults can take a break at the food court

Kidzania in the CBD is a kids’ play park with a difference. It is designed to look and feel like a real city, and lets kids take on roles in real occupations. It taps into that children’ desire to roleplay, while simultaneously giving them basic life lessons as they navigate the ‘city’.

The park is divided into a number of scenes, themed by activity. There’s even a flight simulator! Each of the activities or scenarios – whether it be a car dealership, fire department, city parade or disco lounge – is designed to impart life skills.

Kidzania

Each kid is given ‘KidZos’ on entry, which they treat as money in Kidzania. On a smaller scale, the kids will also learn about a number of professions along the way.

Sadly, no over 16s can participate, but there is a food court and pizzeria to enjoy. Don’t worry about the kids as there is plenty of high-end security to make sure everyone remains safe within the enclosed park. If you bring kids, this is a MUST on your extended Jakarta trip itinerary.

It’s a good idea to check with travel authorities when traveling anywhere, and Jakarta is no different. The region is prone to volcanic activity and other natural threats, so it will reassure you to know if any such warnings are in effect.

Like in any major city, it’s best to err on the side of personal caution in Jakarta. Take care not to be too casual with valuables like cameras, wallets, and jewelry. If using crowded public transport, be aware of the threat of pickpockets.

Ask advice from your hotel or a trusted local desk about things like reputable taxi companies and fair rates. There are several unlicensed operators out there who are looking to overcharge you if they can. It’s not a good idea to ask for an unmetered quote from a taxi operator. Better to make sure the meter is running, and even then to make sure it’s a legit operator.

With so much traffic in the city, you’ll want to be extra vigilant when walking around on your vacation in Jakarta. Drivers aren’t always alert, and different ideas might apply to pedestrian safety.

Drinking tap water is not safe. Fortunately, bottled water is available almost everywhere. Keep in mind to ask about the ice in your establishment as well. If the ice is made directly from tap water, it’s best to avoid it.

For the most part Jakarta and Indonesia are safe destinations if you are sensible and heed local advice.

Is Jakarta worth visiting?

Most people overlook Jakarta in favour of Bali, but we highly recommend it. As the largest city in Southeast Asia, it’s packed with things to see and do.

If touring Jakarta forms part of a larger Indonesia itinerary, we hope this article has offered a little taste of everything the region has to offer. Jakarta is an eclectic combination of Southeast Asian and European colonial culture, history, and food; a melting pot ready for exploration and enjoyment.

Remember also that observing local values and customs will go a long way to helping you enjoy all the city’s many offerings. Here’s hoping that this itinerary is a great help to you on your trip to Jakarta.

This has caused the national government to consider moving the Indonesian capital to a different city.

Jakarta's climate has tropical monsoons. The wet season is from October to May while June thorugh September is the dry season. The city is tropical and humid with temperatures ranging from 75 to 93 °F (24 to 34 °C) and a humidity level between 75 and 85 percent a majority of the year.

Jakarta Government

The executive branch of Jakarta is run by a deputy governor and an officially elected governor. This local government is made of five smaller administrative cities, each led by a mayor, as well as an administrative regency. Unlike other cities in Indonesia, Jakarta actually has mayors who are appointed by the governor instead of elected by the people.

The legislative branch is made of 106 members who are directly elected by the citizens of Jakarta. Jakarta sends 21 different members to the People's Representative Council, and the representatives are elected from Jakarta's three national electoral districts.

In law enforcement and the judicial system, the Polda Metro Jaya oversees the law, security, and order of Jakarta. The Regional Chief of Police, or the Kapolda, leads it and is also the Inspector General of Police.

Jakarta Economy

Jakarta is an important alpha world city with major financial institutions such as the Bank of Indonesia, Indonesia Stock Exchange, and corporate headquarters of numerous Indonesian companies and multinational corporations. The city is the home of six Forbes Global 2000 companies, two Fortune 500 companies, and four Unicorn companies, and the city's GRP was about $483.4 billion USD.

Jakarta's major markets are manufacturing, financial services, and public retail markets. Its manufacturing industries include many iron foundries, repair shops, soap makers, and printing works. In the financial industry, there are major industrial development and construction of new homes on the outskirts of town and major commerce and banking in the center of the city. The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce promotes trade, and Jakarta is about one-fourth of Indonesia’s trade and services and two-thirds of its banking and financial sectors. The local markets serve a majority of the population, such as the markets of Pasar Senen to the east of the central city and Pasar Glodok in the Kota area. These markets are large retail areas, but there are also small neighborhood markets as well.

Jakarta Demographics

According to date from the 2000 Census, the ethnic population of Jakarta was:

  • Javanese: 35.16%
  • Native Jakarta / Betawi: 27.65%
  • Sundanese: 15.27%
  • Chinese: 5.53%
  • Batak: 3.61%
  • Minangkabau: 3.18%
  • Malays: 1.62%

The city of Jakarta has the highest number of overseas Chinese in Indonesia. The city has a diverse Sumatran population, with more than 346,000 Batak, 305,000 Minangkabau, and 155,000 Malays.

Islam is by far the most common religion in Jakarta, accounting for almost 86% of the population according to data from the 2010 Census. This is followed by Protestantism (7.5%), Buddhism (3.3%), Catholicism (3.15%), Hinduism (0.21%) and Confucianism (0.06%).

Jakarta Age and Gender Statistics

The age breakdown of Jakarta is as follows:

0-14 years: 25.02% 15-24 years: 16.99% 25-54 years: 42.4%

Among the entire population, there is approximately one male for every one female in Jakarta.

Education in Jakarta

Many new elementary schools and secondary schools have been built, and old buildings have been renovated, so the education system is quite established. In terms of higher education, there are many vocational schools and over 100 universities, with the largest university being the University of Indonesia.

Jakarta's official language is Indonesian, which is also the most dominant language. English is its second language, with many older people speaking Dutch and Portuguese. Ethnic groups of Jakarta use a mother language at home such as Betawi language, Javanese, Sundanese, Malay, Madurese, Batak, Minangkabau, Chinese, Arabic, and Tamil.

Jakarta History

The area around present-day Jakarta was first part of the 4th-century Sundanese kingdom called Tarumanagara, which was one of the oldest Hindu kingdoms in the country. After its decline, its territories -- including this area -- became a part of the Kingdom of Sunda, which in turn became a major trading port by the 14th century.

The first Europeans came to the area in 1513 when Portuguese ships were looking for a spice route. Sunda made an alliance treaty with Portugal , allowing them to build a port in 1522 to defend against the rise of the Sultanate of Demak in central Java. Just five years later, Fatahillah , a Demak general, attacked and conquered the area and drove out the Portuguese, renaming the region Jayakarta, which became part of the Sultanate of Banten.

Dutch ships began arriving in Jayakarta in 1596, and in 1602, the English East India Company made its first voyage and built a trading post, which became the center of English trade in the country until the late 17th century.

As relationships between Prince Jayawikarta and the Dutch soured, his soldiers and the English attacked the Dutch fortress and were defeated by the Dutch, who burned the English fort in return. This victory allowed the Dutch to consolidate power and rename the city Batavia in 1619. Growing opportunities in the new capital of the Dutch colony attracted Chinese and Indonesian immigrants. By 1930, the city of Batavia had a population of more than 500,000.

After World War II, Batavia was renamed Jakarta, a shortened version of Jayakarta, after Indonesia gained independence from the Dutch in 1946.

Jakarta Population Growth

With only legal residents counted, the population of Jakarta doubled from 4.5 million in 1970 to more than 10 million in 2016, while the population of the Jabodetabek region has grown from 8.2 million to over 30 million during the same period. The growth rate of the area far exceeded government estimates and the national average, which was a modest growth of 1% from 2000 to 2010, compared to the 3.6% rate of the Jakarta region. The 2010 census found that all areas within the DKI Jakarta had a positive growth rate in the last decade, with the slowest growth in Central Jakarta.

Jakarta is now becoming starved for resources by its ever-growing population. Jakarta was designed to handle 800,000 people when founded by the Dutch, although it is now home to up to 12 million people during the work week, with 250,000 new residents coming to the Jabodetabek region each year. This has given rise to many slums without access to water and other resources.

By 2020, the population of Greater Jakarta is expected to grow from 25 million to 35 million, with a mass migration that will further worsen the problems for residents, including poor sanitation, a lack of housing and transportation issues. The population of the city is expected to grow to 16 million during the same time.

One nation’s solution to overcrowding: Carve a new capital out of the jungle

Land under development on an Indonesian island.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Like many of the world’s megacities, Jakarta has mega-problems. Two-hour commutes are a way of life. Air pollution is a serious health hazard. Drinking water is running out. On top of all that, the longtime Indonesian capital — population 11 million, plus twice that many in the ever-expanding suburbs — is sinking.

Map of Indonesia showing the location Nusantara, the new capital on the island of Borneo.

And so in 2019, the country’s president announced a bold plan to carve a new capital out of the rainforest 800 miles away across the Java Sea. He named the city Nusantara — or “archipelago” — for the 17,508 islands that make up the world’s fourth-most populous nation.

In his vision, the $32-billion city would begin life as the new seat of government, and over the next two decades attract millions of people as a high-tech, zero-carbon metropolis that would relieve crowding in Jakarta and serve as a model of urban innovation for the rest of the world.

A cement truck rolls down a dirt road

Those plans remain a distant dream. After two years of construction , the city consists of bumpy dirt roads, towering cranes, dust-coated shells of unfinished apartment complexes and government offices. At its center is the only structure that has been completed: a massive presidential palace shaped like an eagle.

For the record:

9:31 a.m. Aug. 16, 2024 An earlier version of this article reported that Nusantara would replace Jakarta as the capital of Indonesia on Saturday. The government has not set an official date for the transition.

The president, Joko Widodo, moved into his new office late last month. The first wave of civil servants is scheduled to arrive in September. The government could officially make Nusantara the new capital as soon as this fall.

Is Indonesian food finally having its moment in Los Angeles?

Two new Indonesian restaurants indicate that the Southeast Asian cuisine is gaining popularity across Los Angeles.

“It’s really the first capital in the world built from scratch,” said Ruhimat Soerakoesoemah, a senior official at the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, a United Nations organization. “This is basically ground zero. You’re looking at pristine forests. They have to somehow use that area and cut down trees, divide mountains and all that just to build human settlement.”

But plagued by political opposition and construction woes, Nusantara has also become a warning of the profound challenges that come with creating a viable city out of nothing.

More than half of the world’s 8 billion people live in urban areas , a proportion that the U.N. expects to reach 70% by 2050. As cities fill up, many countries are building new ones.

“We are in the midst of a new-cities fever,” said Sarah Moser, an expert on urban expansion and a professor at McGill University in Montreal. “Established cities in the Global South are kind of at a breaking point. People are desperate.”

Moser estimates that as many as 200 new cities are being planned or are under construction in 50 countries — not including China, which has been on its own building spree for decades, with several hundred or more cities still in the works.

Whether a new city succeeds or fails depends on myriad factors, including funding, government support and location.

Construction material stacked in Nusantara.

“To what extent can you plan for a socially productive and coherent city is a fundamental dilemma,” said Philipp Rode, executive director of LSE Cities, a research center at the London School of Economics and Political Science. “It takes a long time, and many, many resources to make it work.”

One source of inspiration for Indonesia is Putrajaya, which replaced Kuala Lumpur as the administrative capital of Malaysia in 1999. But located just 15 miles away, with a population of about 100,000, it was a far less ambitious project than Nusantara.

Cautionary tales abound when it comes to new cities. Two decades after Naypyidaw became the capital of Myanmar, it remains largely deserted, while 200 miles away, the population of the former capital, Yangon, has swelled 42% to 5.7 million people. And in Egypt, an unnamed capital has been under construction for nearly a decade about 30 miles east of Cairo.

In California, tech billionaires fed up with San Francisco want to build a new city for 400,000 people on farmland 60 miles to the northeast. But the project has been put on hold amid environmental concerns and clashes with locals.

“Starting a new city from scratch is always 1,000 times harder than what people think it will be,” Moser said.

Indonesian leaders have debated moving the capital from Jakarta since independence in 1945.

Jakarta was originally a Dutch outpost, built to accommodate hundreds of thousands of people. But the population quickly grew to several times that as people came from across the country in search of work .

Franz Sidjabat arrived from the Indonesian island of Sumatra in 2005 anticipating a better life.

Today, he is more excited at the prospect of leaving. In the last two decades, he has been robbed on public transit, waded through the street in waist-deep floods and spent endless hours stuck in traffic. Now 40, he still can’t afford to buy a home in the city.

“I don’t want to stay in Jakarta,” said Sidjabat, who works in immigration at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

Without a family of his own, he could be among the first civil servants transferred to Nusantara: “I think that Indonesia needs this kind of change.”

Because Jakarta has grown far faster than its municipal water system, a majority of residents now pump their water from the ground. That has accelerated the sinking of the city — up to 8 inches a year in places — with experts predicting that some neighborhoods could be underwater by 2050.

Near the northern harbors of Jakarta Bay, flooding is a nightly occurrence in many homes.

Arianto, a 42-year-old who takes tourists on boat trips and, like many Indonesians, uses one name, explained that he and his nine other family members all sleep on the second floor of their narrow, four-bedroom house because seawater often pools in their downstairs rooms.

When the tide recedes, the water in the house drains through pipes into the streets. But every year, the flooding gets worse . In December, the heart of the rainy season, the water often reaches his knees.

A nearby mosque where he used to play as a child is partly submerged. A concrete sea wall has been fortified three times in Arianto’s lifetime.

“It helps, but it’s water. It leaks,” he said. “We are getting used to it.”

On the island of Borneo , the district of Sepaku, at least a two-hour drive from any city, was known for its forests of mangrove, acacia and eucalyptus. Tens of thousands of people lived in scattered villages. Residents farmed, fished or traveled for work in coal mines or oil fields.

Then in August of 2022, bulldozers arrived and the forest started to disappear as some 6,000 acres were cleared. Posters put up by the government advertised a “Future Smart Forest City” with images of a sprawling campus of shiny buildings and verdant foliage.

Cranes rise among construction activity at Nusantara

Some villagers welcomed the economic boost from the influx of workers.

Nur Wahyudi, who was laid off from his coal mining job during the pandemic lockdown, started driving government officials around the village as they sought to acquire land rights.

“I was happy,” said the 32-year-old. “I never thought the capital city would be here.”

Titin, 33, relocated from the closest city, Balikpapan, two years ago and opened a fruit store. It wasn’t long before she had competition from other newcomers.

The move has come with unfamiliar challenges. She has to pay for water by the tank, since the area still lacks pipes. With limited garbage service, her husband has to drive rotten fruit to Balikpapan for disposal. Rents have skyrocketed, and her temporary living quarters — the back room of her shop — floods when it rains.

“It’s not convenient here,” Titin said. “There have not been any improvements since I came.”

Workers have raced to complete enough of the city to meet the president’s timetable and officially make it the capital this week. An employee for the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, which oversees the construction, said three years of work have been compressed into one.

“Usually you would build the roads first, then build the housing, or make the water available, then the housing,” said the employee, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she feared using her name could get her fired. “But what is happening right now is everything is being built at the same time.”

An aerial picture taken on August 28, 2019 shows a view of the area where Indonesian President Joko Widodo announced that the nation's political heart would be moved nearly 2,000 kilometres east to a yet-to-be-built model city as a way of easing pressure on densely populated Java.

Indonesia is building a new capital from scratch — no matter the environmental impact

Indonesia could be trading one environmental disaster for another when it relocates its capital from Jakarta to East Kalimantan, a hotbed of coal mining, gas extraction and palm oil production on the giant island of Borneo.

It is common to hear complaints that hasty urbanization is causing big-city problems — relatively speaking. There is a serious housing shortage for workers. One restaurant had no ice or fruit the other day because the employee sent to buy them that morning was stuck in traffic.

Tasmi, 55, and her husband, Prayetno, 60, used to buy pepper from local farmers and sell it to a distributor, earning enough to build a four-bedroom house and buy an SUV.

But the government killed their business when it claimed the pepper farmers’ lands for Nusantara. The couple recently started selling rice from a tarp on the street, making less than a fifth of their old income. Their daughter, a college graduate, helps them sell eggs.

“Of course there will be more impact, especially for agriculture around here,” Prayetno said.

Environmentalists have warned that as the capital expands, it may spill over into the habitats of endangered species such as proboscis monkeys, orangutans and gibbons.

Indigenous groups worry that the government will claim the land that they have long called home. The project has already altered rivers, disrupting fishing and causing flooding when it rains.

Arman Jais, a 38-year-old farmer and member of the Balik tribe, said he is routinely kept awake at night by the nearby construction of a dam for the new capital. The commotion reminds him of his one and only visit to Jakarta . Even in his hotel room, he had trouble sleeping in the stifling city air, and he doubted that he could survive the crowds and traffic.

“I couldn’t imagine if the new capital turns into Jakarta,” he said. “As Indigenous people, that’s what we are afraid of.”

The Indonesian president, popularly known as Jokowi , has been unrelenting in his drive to build Nusantara, rushing to get a foothold there before he terms out of office in October. On Saturday, he will lead an Independence Day celebration there.

“He wanted to develop the capital up to the point of no return,” said Yanuar Nugroho, his former deputy chief of staff. “His strategy is working all-out, around the clock, so when he leaves the administration, whoever the president is does not have the chance to say no.”

In perhaps his boldest political move, Jokowi betrayed his own party in February’s presidential election to endorse a competing candidate who promised to press on with the new capital. The ticket, which included Jokowi’s eldest son as the vice presidential candidate, emerged victorious.

Silicon Valley billionaires put plans for new California city on hold

The investors proposing a new city in rural Solano County will pull their measure off the ballot for at least two years while they fund a full environmental review.

July 22, 2024

This week, on a visit to the new presidential palace for the first Cabinet meeting there, the president-elect, Prabowo Subianto , reiterated his commitment to the city.

“We will complete it well because it is really needed,” he said.

But even as the government moves there, it is far from certain that the city will achieve the economic success needed to fund its continued development. The plan is to clear a total of 633,000 acres. The hope is that when construction is completed in 2045, the population of Nusantara will be 1.9 million.

Indonesia's government has built a dam and altered the Sepaku River for Nusantara

So far the government has secured a total of $3.6 billion in private funding. But one early investor, SoftBank Group Corp ., withdrew from the project in 2022 without explanation. That spooked other corporate investors, who are meant to account for 80% of funding.

“It’s always difficult to build a city when there is no economic activity,” said Imaduddin Abdullah, a researcher at the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance in Indonesia.

California could get a new city very soon. Here’s what that means

The results are still coming in for the presidential primary, but it’s looking like California could get a new city soon, all thanks to voters.

While the government has presented Nusantara as an answer to Jakarta’s problems, there are many skeptics.

Among them is Hendricus Andy Simarmata, an urban planner and informal advisor in discussions to move the capital. He said that the relocation of thousands of civil servants could help a little, but that the government should limit growth in Jakarta by building universities and industrial parks elsewhere.

“If the government could manage this rapid urbanization properly in greater Jakarta, then we wouldn’t need to move,” he said.

In any case, Nusantara seems unlikely to have much impact on crowding in the rest of the country. Over the next two decades, Indonesia’s population is expected to grow from 276 million to 324 million. It will be heavily concentrated in cities.
