Health Missions is a 501(c3) that was founded by Dr. Joe Esposito on the principle of spreading the word about what chiropractic can do for a person. Over the years the focus has gone from a research-based approach to an action-based approach. In 2021 Health Missions became part of the OneChiropractic family and will be an arm to help promote & provide chiropractic. It promotes the benefits of chiropractic to the underserved communities all around the world. Its focus is on low-cost or no cost community funded clinics. It does this though mission trips and the creation of free clinics around the United States. We are building a community network that serves, sees, and spreads the word on the value of chiropractic.

Chiropractic College Students See Mission Trips As Service Opportunities

Tags: Communications Staff , Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) , Doctor of Chiropractic (DC)

Chiropractic college students have busy schedules but many still find the time to get involved with something bigger than themselves: a mission trip beyond the U.S. to help populations where healthcare is limited.

Medical Mission Trips: They’re Back

For years, students at the Cleveland University-Kansas City (CUKC) College of Chiropractic in Overland Park, Kan., have embraced the chance to make a difference around the world. Like other universities offering healthcare education, CUKC postponed scheduled trips in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting travel restrictions. However, CUKC is again making plans to participate in medical missions trips in the 2021-22 academic year.

“ It’s an opportunity for our chiropractic students to work side-by-side with field doctors for a week and provide chiropractic care for disadvantaged, underserved populations,” Dr. Jon Wilson, dean of the College of Chiropractic, said. “It’s a way to broaden your world perspective and gain an unforgettable experience in your field.”

In 2020, for example, three CUKC students who were members of the Cleveland Christian Club (CCC) participated in a Christian Chiropractic Association (CCA)-sponsored a mission trip to the Dominican Republic.

“It was eye-opening to see how much suffering goes on in an area that’s filled with tourism,” Robert Coty Spraggs said after his return. “ We did travel to more remote areas that were very impoverished.”

He said the mission trip allowed many more people to get the chiropractic care they needed, as there were few chiropractors available, and most people didn’t go because they couldn’t afford healthcare.

The Primary Mission:  Helping People

“Trips like this matter because these people are born into situations and environments in which change can be nearly impossible,” Spraggs said. “ We helped a lot of people while we were there.”

At CUKC, the international mission trips are coordinated and sponsored in conjunction with the Christian Chiropractic Association (CCA) and Caring Partners International (CPI).

A 2021 research study by Baylor University surveying hundreds of students and mission trip leaders showed those who participated in service-oriented short-term mission trips in college tend to have lower levels of materialism, were less likely to see their culture as superior, and had an increased appreciation for other cultures.

Other benefits of a medical mission trip noted by experienced advisors from other colleges include:

  • They help you “develop the tenacity of character that will make you a better doctor or nurse in your future career.”
  • “It can help you understand all of the intricacies of a medical practice and its support professionals.”
  • “It can look really good on a resume. Many employers like to work with people who are compassionate and dedicated, and medical work will show that you are both.”
  • “It solidifies your passion for medicine. By seeing how your career can help others, you will be inspired to continue your training and complete your degree.”

CUKC Alumnus “Took Away so Much More”

The benefits of participating in service-focused missions to other countries were not lost on Dr. Megan Spoerl. In 2016 she volunteered for a medical mission trip while a student at the CUKC College of Chiropractic.

“Over a trimester break in December, I traveled to Haiti and the Dominican Republic for 10 days with other student doctors and doctors,” she says. “I did improve my adjusting skills there, but I took away so much more, including a whole new appreciation for life itself.”

The College of Chiropractic at Cleveland University-Kansas City (CUKC)

Cleveland University-Kansas City (CUKC) is a private, nonprofit, healthcare-focused university located in Overland Park, Kansas, a suburb of the Kansas City metro. Most students earn their Doctor of Chiropractic degree (D.C.) in 3.3 years through a year-round, trimester schedule.

Points of distinction for the CUKC chiropractic degree include:

  • In 2022, the CUKC  College of Chiropractic  celebrates 100 years as a chiropractic college. CUKC has more than 11,500 chiropractic alumni.
  • CUKC students often begin hands-on training in their first trimester. CUKC chiropractic students intern in the on-campus student chiropractic clinic, then advance to the on-campus Chiropractic Health Center.
  • 95% of CUKC graduates pass all four parts of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) exams within six months of graduation.

Humanitarian Efforts

chiropractic mission trips

After participating in his first chiropractic mission trip in Fortaleza, Brazil, a spark was ignited in Dr. Ara to serve humanity.  This spark was what inspired him to expand his humanitarian efforts by organizing his own trips in countries far and wide.

These mission trips originally focused in third-world countries which had no access to chiropractic or healing, but as the demands grew, Dr Ara began to extend his services to more and more countries.

Thus, Dr. Ara went on to further expand his humanitarian efforts by organizing mission trips into Armenia, Serbia, Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Nepal, and India.

Dr Ara and his team worked tirelessly throughout the mission days. Averaging 18 hours a day, the only thing that kept them going was the strong necessity to serve humanity.  To them, it was more than getting rid of aches and pains, it was about bringing life back to people by removing the interferences. It was this driving purpose that pushed them all to work through the intense hours of the day with little to no sleep. The feedback of each volunteer was pretty much the same. In their own words, they would say that it was one of the most meaningful things they have ever done in their life.

Totaling thirteen total missions throughout the years, thousands upon thousands of people were served in his efforts towards lifting humanity.

As people received this service of love, they melted the hardness and rigidity solidified from challenging life experiences. They had an opportunity to get closer to their original source of love and kindness. Metaphorically, Dr. Ara would frequently mention that they were melting the hardness from their hearts.

To Dr. Ara, it’s all about service no matter what cast, race, or creed.  As he saw it, the greatest offering one can give is the service of love which flowed out through his efforts in these missions.

chiropractic mission trips

He stated the following:

“The healer you are  seeking is found within … chiropractors are facilitators, instruments that help you remove blocks/interference so you can express and shine brilliantly. As we present the opportunity for people to shine, we ourselves begin to shine, but beyond that, everyone whom comes in contact with the ones we’ve served start to shine brighter, hence making this world a better place to live.  You are perfect and whole, the chiropractor simply removes or reduces the obstacles that dim your expression. Doing so awakens an inborn healing and brings you closer to your natural state.”

chiropractic mission trips

Dr. Ara’s missions served a two-fold purpose:

1) Allowing humanity to shine brighter 2) Raising money for Humanitarian Activities – All proceeds collected through voluntary donations went towards Disaster Relief Projects

Dr Ara foresees more missions organized in his future but presently, he continues his services in Chelsea, New York City and Fresh Meadows, Queens, NY.  His patients experience a gradual climb towards health and wellness allowing them to reach closer and closer towards an optimal state.

Below is a compilation video of the 2010 chiropractic and healing mission trip. It has captured a glimpse of the experience created in those years. Most people reporting back to Sol-Center Chiropractic after watching the video stated that the experience can be felt through this video. We hope that is also true for you. Please watch it, share it and give us your feedback on what you thought and felt.

May we all be a shining example to each other and live a meaningful life by raising humanity towards greater heights of awareness, compassion and responsibility.  We build the future for the generations to come. What we think, say or do has an impact to all around us and our environment. It’s up to us to make the change we want to see in the world. May we succeed in that mission!

RUSSIAN EDUCATION

STATUS: Over the years there have been several DCs that have come and gone. Dr. Charles Register is the first one to stick it out these 12 years but others have tried before and left. This historical perspective calls for an outright rejection of anything that has been done and that worked at developing the chiropractic profession. An entirely new and different approach is what is needed and chiropractic education can be that center point in this strategy.

OPPORTUNITY: St. Elizabeth Hospital in St. Petersburg, under the leadership of Dr. Boris Taitz, has requested that two chiropractors come and practice in their onsite outpatient center. The offer also includes available space to establish a chiropractic college but there will need to be some extensive renovations made to the building first to accommodate this program.

Sounds easy to put together… right? A few hard working people are in fact working on these requests as you read these lines and so only time will tell. In September 2006 the first DC was placed in the St. Elizabeth Hospital and Chiropractors interested in helping develop chiropractic in Russia can reference the CDC Russian Page for contact information and take action first by registering your interest by completing this registry form –> REGISTER HERE .

CHIROPRACTIC GOES TO RUSSIA

exert from Palmer Alumni News, June’05

The story begins like this: On a cold and snowy night in early December 2004, five chiropractors and two chiropractic business professionals from three states and two countries arrived in Moscow to take the next step in expanding chiropractic for the Russian people.

Thus began the travel journal of Sherry Durrett, D.C., L.C.P. (Hon.), who journeyed with a chiropractic delegation to Russia, where they met with several high-level Russian health officials regarding establishing a clinic abroad program in the St. Petersburg area and eventually developing a chiropractic educational program in Russia. The December trip was one of several the delegation made, and plans are being made for future visits, including a chiropractic educational summit.

The December chiropractic delegation to Moscow and St. Petersburg included Dr. Durrett; Charles Register, D.C., from Moscow; Larry Berg, director of a Chicago chiropractic clinic; Jill Howe, D.C., from Chicago; Zia Bellin, D.C., and David Bellin, D.C., from Atlanta; and Vladimir Uzhva, director of the Regional Center for Chiropractic in Vladivostok.

The group first met with several Russian officials, including a director of the Ministry of Health Care & Social Development, who was receptive to the group message and suggested that they develop a symposium on chiropractic. The delegation also talked to a health care official in St. Petersburg who expressed that there was a demand and high interest for chiropractic in his region of the country.

Overall, I would say that our December trip was very successful as well as an incredible experience, Dr. Durrett said. We opened new roads for the expansion of chiropractic in Russia and made many valuable contacts along the way. We were very graciously received by everyone we met, and there was a very strong interest in chiropractic.

This spring, Dr. Durrett responded to an invitation from the Government of St. Petersburg to coordinate and deliver an International Symposium on the Art, Science and Philosophy of Chiropractic. The symposium was held May 26 and 27, at the city St. Elizabeth Hospital, one of the region’s largest hospitals. Speakers at the symposium included Dr. Durrett, Michel Tetrault, D.C., Dwight Whynot, D.C., and 1997 PCC graduate Clifton Bethel, D.C. They were unbelievably enthusiastic, said Dr. Bethel, who assisted Dr. Durrett with the May trip. At the halfway point of the first day, an official of the hospital said. We would like concrete proposals from you on what we can do to have Doctors of Chiropractic practice here.

Dr. Bethel of Rock Island, Ill., is currently considering that request along with his Moscow-born wife, Elena, a registered nurse who used her medical knowledge and familiarity with chiropractic to translate during the symposium. Ultimately, Dr. Durrett would like to see a formal chiropractic training program established in Russia of equal standards to that of U.S. chiropractic colleges. To this end, formal negotiations were entered into while she was in St. Petersburg in order to facilitate it. Classrooms, support staff, lecture halls and treatment areas were offered at St. Elizabeth Hospital for use at no charge in an effort to help get this plan implemented.

Currently Dr. Durrett is working on recruiting instructors and doctors for St. Elizabeth chiropractic faculty. The Russian Federation Ministry of Health Care and Social Development has also asked her for proposals for another chiropractic symposium. If you are interested in helping with this project or submitting a symposium presentation, contact Dr. Durrett by toll-free fax at (866) 831-6755.
