Shore Excursions

Oslo, norway.

Oslo, Norway’s capital, lies on the country’s southern coast at the head of the Oslofjord. It is at this headland that you’ll find the famous Oslo Opera House, its roof sloping toward the waterfront. Two parks not to be missed are Vigeland Park, the world’s largest sculpture park made by a single artist, and Ekebergparken, a sculpture and heritage park surrounded by beautiful scenery and spectacular lookout points. Consider a tour of the peninsula of Bygdøy, where you can visit the Norwegian Maritime Museum, the Viking Ship Museum and the Holmenkollbakken ski-jumping hill with panoramic views of the fjord. Also save time to shop and dine in the hip Aker Brygge district, walking distance from the port.

Just a few of the majestic sights you’ll take in during your trip.

Gamla Stan (Old town of Stockholm)

The royal palace (oslo), aker brygge, senate square.

A day-by-day plan to guide your Nordic adventure.

Day 1: WELCOME TO FINLAND

When you arrive at Helsinki Airport, make your way to city centre. Many travellers opt to take public transportation, but we also offer direct private transfers. Take advantage of this first day on your own to discover this Nordic gem at your own pace, and eat at one of the many delicious restaurants. We recommend visiting Senate Square , Uspenski Cathedral , and the Old Market Hall to become acquainted with Finnish history and culture.

Spend the night in Helsinki.

Day 2: EXPLORE LOVELY HELSINKI

Today, continue exploring Helsinki before boarding a cruise to Sweden. Helsinki is known for its creativity and, in 2012, was awarded the UNESCO “City of Design” title, boasting its very own design district and “design tram route” (Line 6). Some notable city landmarks to see or visit include Sibelius Park, Finlandia Hall , the Finnish National Opera House , and Parliament House , the seat of Parliament in Finland.

Spend the night in Helsinki.

Day 3: FERRY TO ESTONIA

This morning you will head to the ferry terminal in Helsinki for a 2-hour ferry ride to Tallinn , the capital of Estonia. After checking in at your centrally-located hotel, you can explore this beautiful medieval city as you wish. We recommend a walk from the Upper Town (Toompea) and a visit to the Orthodox St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral , the ancient limestone walls of the medieval Toompea Castle , the current seat of the Estonian Parliament. For dinner, you will find many nice restaurants in the Old Town (Vanalinn) .

Spend the night in Tallinn.

Day 4: TALLINN & OVERNIGHT CRUISE TO SWEDEN

Spend the morning continuing your exploration of the Estonian capital. Like most European cities with an 800-year history, Tallinn is a patchwork of historic areas, offering a fascinating blend of Eastern and Western European influences. For a blast from the past, take a stroll through the Kadriorg district , reminiscent of a time when Estonia was ruled by Russian tsars. This area houses several interesting sights, such as the Kadriorg Palace and the Estonian Art Museum . You could also visit the newer parts of Tallinn, such as Freedom square (Vabaduse väljak), to get a glimpse of Soviet-era life.

In the late afternoon, you will board an overnight cruise to Stockholm.

Spend the night on the cruise ship.

Day 5: SAIL TO SPLENDID STOCKHOLM

Savour the maritime scenery during breakfast as the ship navigates through Sweden’s Archipelago, a collection of over 30,000 islands and inlets. Upon your arrival in Stockholm , make your way to the hotel and then enjoy some time exploring the city centre. We recommend, enjoying some shopping on the well-known pedestrian street Drottninggatan and taking a stroll in the surrounding area of Östermalm . There you will find numerous shops, cafés, and restaurants for a perfect introduction to Swedish culture.

Spend the night in Stockholm.

Day 6: THE CHARMS OF SWEDISH CULTURE

Today you will explore the heart of scenic Stockholm. We recommend exploring the capital by foot, visiting attractions such as the Old Town (Gamla Stan) , where you will find the Royal Palace , the parliament, old churches, beautiful cobble stone streets and medieval houses.

After some time at Gamla Stan, you can take a short ferry ride to the nearby island Djurgården , a cultural oasis with something for everyone. Here you will find the kitschy Abba Museum , the Nordic Museum , the Gröna Lund amusement park, and the Skansen open-air museum. It is ideal to spend the afternoon here, exploring the grounds and many attractions.

Day 7: TRAVEL FROM STOCKHOLM TO LOVELY COPENHAGEN

Today you will take a short flight to Copenhagen . After settling in at your hotel, go for a walk along the enchanting old harbour area of Nyhavn , where you will see colourful houses and lively restaurants among the docked boats. Walk the narrow side streets, visit some shops and try out the traditional Danish open-faced sandwich, Smørrebrød. In the evening, visit the amusement park Tivoli Gardens , which has something for everyone. It’s a lovely place to admire the architecture and gardens and to enjoy some carnival rides.

Spend the night in Copenhagen.

*For those interested, we offer the option of travelling by train instead of flight between Stockholm and Denmark. For more details click the optional activities

Day 8: A DAY IN CAPTIVATING COPENHAGEN

You have the whole day to explore Copenhagen . We recommend seeing the city by foot, visiting landmarks like Amalienborg Palace , Christiansborg Palace , and the famous Little Mermaid statue. An optional cruise from the harbour is also highly recommended as you can appreciate the architecture and beauty of the city by water.  Next, stroll Ströget street for some shopping and grab something to eat at Torvehallerne food hall.

Day 9: SET SAIL FOR NORWAY

Spend the morning touring Copenhagen. Some interesting attractions include the observatory of The Round Tower , the most famous church in Copenhagen, Church of Our Saviour , as well as the impeccable King’s Garden, and the regal Rosenborg Castle . In the early afternoon, it’s time to board your cruise to Oslo, which sails gently up the Kattegat Sund on its way to Norway’s capital city. You can enjoy dinner in one of the restaurants, check out the entertainment on board or just relax and watch the sunset from the deck.

Spend the night on board the DFDS cruise, in a private cabin.

Day 10: ENJOY ENCHANTING OSLO

After the ship docks, get ready to see the best of Oslo . The city is quite walkable, and we recommend exploring by foot and taking advantage of the convenience of public transport. Notable attractions include the Oslo City Hall , the Royal Palace , the Oslo Opera House , Aker Brygge area and spending some time along the beautiful harbour area.

Spend the night in Oslo.

Day 11: EXPLORE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF OSLO

This morning get an early start to explore the Norwegian capital at your own pace. We recommend viewing the city by foot or booking a guided bus tour that will take you along the famous landmarks of the city. Highlights include the beautiful  Vigeland Sculpture Park , Akershus fortress , Munch Museum , Fram Polar Ship Museum and Karl Johans street. You will then have the rest of the day to explore at your own leisure.

Day 12: DEPARTURE FROM OSLO

Your Scandinavian adventure with Nordic Visitor ends today. For transportation to Oslo-Gardermoen Airport , you can take the Flytoget express train from Oslo Central Station or book a private transfer through Nordic Visitor that will deliver you to the airport directly from your hotel. If your flight is in the afternoon, take the opportunity to do some last-minute shopping, visit one of Oslo’s museums or just relax at a café reflecting on your Scandinavian holiday.

Optional extras

We recommend adding your extra activities to the tour now for the best booking experience and to secure your spot, as activities are likely to sell out.

An extremely enjoyable holiday

This was our fourth trip with Nordic Visitor and, as with the previous three, the arrangements were first class which resulted in an extremely enjoyable and stress-free holiday. Thank you! The accommodation was very good throughout, with special mention to Skt. Petri Hotel in Copenhagen, which was superb.

Tour Information

We recommend that all Nordic Visitor travellers read through the following information about our self-guided tours, travelling with the cruise ships, boarding flights, and other useful information for your travels.

OUR SELF-GUIDED TOURS This is an independent, self-guided tour. All accommodation, flights, cruise and ferry tickets (as specified in the itinerary) will be pre-booked by Nordic Visitor, but travellers are ultimately responsible for getting to hotels and to any ferry departure points by the specified times.

TALLINK SILJA LINE FERRY HELSINKI TO TALLINN You will go from Helsinki to Tallinn by a 2-hour ferry on either the Star or Megastar ship. There are several departures during the day, but we usually book the mid-morning departure.

  • Departure from Helsinki: 10:30
  • Arrival in Tallin: 12:30

TALLINK SILJA LINE CRUISE TALLINN TO STOCKHOLM To travel from Tallinn to Stockholm, you will board an overnight cruise on either the Tallink Silja Line Baltic Queen or Victoria I. You will stay in a cabin with sea view, including private facilities. On board you‘ll be able to partake in some tax-free shopping, enjoy provided entertainment, and dine in the cafés and restaurants.

  • Departure from Tallinn: 18:00
  • Arrival in Stockholm: 10:15

DFDS CRUISE The overnight cruise from Copenhagen to Oslo includes cabin accommodation (comfort or quality cabin with windows) with private facilities, and breakfast is included. There are two ships operating the route, Pearl Seaways and Crown Seaways, and each ship can accommodate approx. 1800 passengers. On board you find restaurants, bars and activities.

  • Departure from Copenhagen: 14:15
  • Arrival in Oslo: 09:15

FLIGHT FROM STOCKHOLM TO COPENHAGEN Included in the package is a flight between Stockholm and Copenhagen. The direct flight takes approximately 1h10 min. Baggage allowance per person is 20kg per checked bag and 8 kg per carry-on bag. Most days offer flights at mid-day but in some cases, you may be booked on a morning or evening flight. Your travel consultant will book the best option for your travel dates. Please note that airport transfer from your hotel in Stockholm to the airport is not included nor the train from Copenhagen airport to the hotel. We recommend Arlanda Express Train, a short 18-minute train ride to the airport from city center.

WOULD YOU RATHER TAKE THE TRAIN? If you prefer to travel from Stockholm to Copenhagen by rail instead of flying, we would be happy to arrange that for you. In the summer months, the trains conduct track maintenance and there might be changes in the route and extending the journey from the standard duration of 5 hours and 10 minutes. The train tickets might not be bookable until 30 days prior departure. In the meantime, we will book the rest of the travel arrangements for you. Please select the train option during the booking steps online.

CURRENCY RATE All bookings are charged in Euros (EUR). Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate. Therefore, conversions from EUR to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

AFTER BOOKING WITH NORDIC VISITOR After booking your package with Nordic Visitor, you will be contacted within two working days by one of our travel consultants, who will serve as your dedicated contact person for all of your travel needs before, during and even after your holiday. Your travel consultant will provide you with details about your booking and your remaining payment (if not paid in full). You will also receive more information about what to expect during your holiday.

CARBON OFFSETTING YOUR TOUR Nordic Visitor is working on offsetting the estimated carbon footprint of your package. We’ve partnered with an environmental fund in Iceland to carbon offset all our tours. Carbon offsetting your international flights is not included, but we highly recommend you look into possibilities with your airline or directly through a local environment fund.

Port of Call Port of Call (Arrival, Departure)

baltic cruise from oslo

Nowadays Rotterdam is a vital part of the economy of the Netherlands. The Port of Rotterdam, the largest port in the world with a total throughput of about 300 million metric tons a year provides a solid base for industry in and around the Rotterdam area. Its population is about 575000, which makes it one of the largest cities in the Netherlands, but the number of people that work in the Rotterdam area or are otherwise economically dependent of it exceeds that number by far. The density of population is among the highest in the Netherlands, exceeding 4000 per square kilometer. Shipping, storage and forwarding are of course among the most important activities in the region, but the port of Rotterdam has also created a large chemical industry, which is fully dependent upon the transport facilities for the inflow of crude oil and the shipping of the various refined end products. Large petrochemical plants have sprung up, especially on the south bank of the Maas. These plants are in operation 24 hours a day. The development of Europoort ('Euro gate') started in 1957. A large complex of ports and industrial areas was created between Rotterdam and the entry to the North Sea. When more space was needed, the Maasvlakte ('Maas Flats') was created. By means of dikes, dams and sand deposits the coast line was altered to include many square kilometers of newly created land, where the Petroleum Harbors, container terminals, ore terminals and the Maasvlakte power plant are located. An interesting feature is the 'disaster area', a training complex where fire brigades train to cope with large-scale industrial accidents. The complex includes a grounded tanker that is set on fire several times a day. The name Europoort suggests that Rotterdam wanted to become the gateway to Europe. By 1963 this suggestion had become outdated, because in that year Rotterdam could claim to be the largest port in the world, a record that it still holds. In fact, the Berge Stahl, a 365000 ton ore carrier, is fully dependent on the port of Rotterdam, since this is the only port on the European continent that this ship (with its 23m/75ft draught) can access. After the flood in 1953 a large project was initiated to prevent such floodings in the future. This project, the 'Delta plan', involved stronger and higher dikes and numerous flood barriers. The latest of those flood barriers to be completed was the storm surge barrier in the Nieuwe Waterweg near Hoek van Holland. Two enormous doors mounted on swing arms can be used to close off the Nieuwe Waterweg, should storm and high water require so in order to protect the country from flooding. Normally the doors are open, so as not to impede the flow of ships through the Nieuwe Waterweg. Building and development have become a way of life for Rotterdam. The city has continued to grow, and it shows no signs of slowing down. And although this constant increase of population, urbanization and development all breed their own problems, Rotterdam is ready for the next millennium. As the economic heart of the Netherlands, with a population heading towards 600000, it had better be ready.

baltic cruise from oslo

Situated at the head of the Oslofjord, Oslo is the oldest Scandinavian capital, and features a charming mix of old and new architecture, together with acclaimed museums, parks and monuments, making it a relaxing and rewarding holiday destination. The highlight of a visit to Oslo is the 13th century medieval Akershus Fortress, featuring creepy dungeons with dark, damp cells, magnificent banquet halls and ornate staterooms, and a charming chapel which contains the crypts of King Hĺkon VII and Olav V. It was used by the Nazis during WW II as a prison and place of execution but is now occupied by the Norway Resistance Museum, which has a variety of exhibits of Norwegian life under German occupation. The grounds surrounding the fortress are perfect for picnics and relaxation, and afford spectacular views of the city and harbor. Norway is famous for its artists, and two of them are celebrated in museums in Oslo. The Munch Museum contains a collection of more than 5000 drawings and paintings by Norway's most famous artist. Munch's most famous painting, The Scream, resides in the National Gallery. Nearby, Vigeland Museum and Park showcases the works of the renowned sculptor Gustav Vigeland amid a beautiful expanse of trees, grass, and ponds. Another artistic attraction is the National Theatre, with its superb rococo hall. Oslo has plenty of luxurious accommodations, excellent restaurants and charming cafes. The nightlife is numerous and varied, with bars, clubs and pubs to suit all tastes. A rewarding excursion can be made to the nearby Bygdřy Peninsula, located across the harbour from Oslo. It features a large open-air folk museum, maritime museums housing excavated Viking ships and Thor Heyerdahl's balsa raft Kon-Tiki; restored stave churches; and some pretty beaches. Further afield is the Nordmarka, a wilderness area on Oslo's northern border, and the quaint fishing village of Risor, with its picturesque harbour and island of Stangholmen. International airlines link Oslo with most major European cities, and transportation options into the city are numerous and reliable

baltic cruise from oslo

The waters of the Oslofjord to the south and the forested hills of the Nordmarka inland to the north are immensely popular for everything from boating and hiking to skiing, and on all but the shortest of stays there's ample opportunity to join in. The island beaches just offshore in the Oslofjord and the open forest and ski jumps at Holmenkollen are obvious targets, both within easy reach by ferry or underground train. Oslo curves round the northernmost point of the Oslofjord, which extends for some 100km from the Skagerrak, the choppy channel separating Norway and Sweden from Denmark. As Norwegian fjords go, Oslofjord is not particularly beautiful, but amongst a string of workaday industrial settlements is Norway's only surviving fortified town, Fredrikstad, with its angular bastions and grid-iron of late sixteenth-century streets; it's best visited as a day-trip by train from the capital. Situated in the middle of the Jutland peninsula, Aarhus is the second biggest city in Denmark. Founded over 1,000 years ago as a Viking settlement at the mouth of the river, the town first began developing in approximately 1900, when industrial growth attracted rural populations. The population of Aarhus has almost doubled since 1935 and is still growing, although rather more slowly than in recent decades. Today, 'The Smallest Big City in Denmark' is full of excitement and adventure brimming over with music and dancing, theatre and opera, a wealth of museums, and much more. Visitors come to luxuriate in the magnificent and sublime performances of the internationally renowned Wagner operas or visit the more "alternative" entertainment venues rich in atmosphere and excitement. As the capital of the provinces, it has all the atmosphere of a big city. In addition to the smart, seductive cultural events that take place all the year round, refreshing green woods and sunlit beaches are within easy reach, providing welcome respite from the thronging crowds and the mighty roar of traffic. Thanks to the relatively large population of younger inhabitants Aarhus has the feel of a "young" town. This follows naturally as Aarhus boasts many schools and educational institutions that attract young people from out-lying districts. However, many of them move away once their studies are completed. A notable centre of commerce, the Port of Aarhus is one of Denmark's largest harbours with a cargo-handling capacity of 11 million tonnes and 600,000 containers. With planned investment of an additional two billion Danish kroner over the next 25 years, future development plans include a doubling of the harbour's capacity.

Warnemunde is Rostock's most beautiful seaside resort. With its unspoilt coastline with its broad, white sandy beach, Warnemünde is also one of the most important German ferry and cruise ship ports on the Baltic coast.

The story of Tallinn is a tale of three cities: an ancient citadel, the old town, and the modern city. Capital of the Estonian Republic, the coastal settlement is almost opposite Helsinki on the Gulf of Finland. The citadel, known as Toompea Castle, sits on a craggy hill peering down on a fascinating amalgam of medieval rooftops and winding cobbled streets, punctuated here and there by graceful spires and turreted towers. Around this ancient core, building continues constantly, and Tallinn today is the major industrial centre in Estonia. Tallinn is now the home of no less than six theatres and is famous throughout the Baltic for its song festivals, where massed choirs sing to packed audiences in a huge open-air stadium. Sailing, too, is an important recreation. Tallinn-made yachts are renowned, and in 1980 the city hosted the yachting events for Moscow's Olympics. Tallinn enjoys a mild climate, with summer 'white nights', when sunset blends into sunrise, rivalling those of St Petersburg.

baltic cruise from oslo

'Beauty on Water' or 'Venice of the North' - these phrases sum up the Baltic allure of a city built on 14 islands in an archipelago of some 24,000. Founded by Birger Jarl in 1252, Stockholm owes its existence to water, developing as a transit point for goods moving between the Baltic Sea and Lake Mälaren. A strategic and trade centre, the fortified town grew during the Middle Ages when it acquired much of its picturesque architecture. However, it only became the national capital in 1634, during the Thirty Years War, when Sweden was an imperial power. The Vasa monarchs left Stockholm with a Baroque magnificence that would grace a far grander setting than today's peaceful capital of a small Nordic nation: splendid palaces, gold and ironwork, dignified ceremonial and rich royal collections. Baroque monumental stucco blends beautifully with the colourful plastered walls of the medieval Old Town. The clear northern light falling across these surfaces, especially during the endless northern summer evenings, intensifies the freshness and cleanliness of even the most venerable districts. Modern Stockholm is a bustling business hub for the entire Baltic region yet anglers can still catch salmon in the centre of the city. Sweden was the envy of less dynamic economies during the 1960s and 1970s, with Stockholm a trading and commercial centre to be reckoned with, as anyone who has ever used an Ericsson mobile phone or an Ikea chair can testify. Swedish design genius, aesthetic and technical know-how, has ensured that many professionals in the creative and IT fields look to Stockholm for inspiration and partnership. Prosperous, efficient and well-scrubbed, Stockholm balances its economic vigour with a remarkably unspoilt natural charm. With 30% of the city area made up of waterways and another 30% parks and green spaces, it has perhaps the freshest air and widest lungs of any European capital. But it has nightlife and a restaurant culture that belie any impression of a quiet garden city; Stockholm has almost as many restaurants per capita as Paris and a night in the hotspots of Stureplan should be enough to satisfy even the most demanding clubber. Sweden is the world's third most successful exporter of pop music behind the United States and Britain, a process that began with Abba's global success in the 1970s. A good night out here can soon blow away any clichés about Nordic gloom. And Stockholm's 150 or so museums and galleries means there's plenty to do on rainy days. Light on water and pure air may be the strongest impression a visitor carries away from Stockholm, especially in the summer, but they might equally be thinking of a particularly rowdy night in the Pelikan Bar on Södermalm, or hot jazz in the Lydmar Hotel. The entire world may descend on Stockholm each December for the Nobel Prize ceremonies, but they arrive in the winter cold and darkness; the smiles of a summer night are far more inviting for the traveller.

Kiel, the "City of fresh air", has numerous faces. The time when it was a member in the Hanseatic League have shaped it as much as the Christian-Albrechts-Universität, the shipyards, the Kieler Woche festival, and the construction of the Kiel Canal. The location of the war harbour here also left its mark, as 80% of Kiel lay in ruins when World War II was over in 1945. The Nikolai Church, dating from 1242, in front of which Ernst Barlachs sculpture of the "Mind Warrior" keeps guard, is located at the Old Market. Only the grave of Kiels founder, Duke Adolf IV of Schauenburg, is preserved in the vault of the former Franciscan Monastery. Meanwhile, theres a colourful assembly of offices, boutiques and shops around the former market place. A few streets down, Kiels little red-light district with its clubs, fast food stalls, and "hotels" is starting up. Like most of these areas, the "Wall" is located right near the harbour, right across the street from the Maritime Museum, which has been set up in the old fish market hall. Past the radio and TV-station NDR, you arrive at the Castle which was unfortunately completely destroyed during the war. It has since been rebuilt with a modern concert hall in a sixties style. The City Hall, the Opera, and the Ministry of Justice rise up majestically alongside the two lakes referred to as Kleinen Kiel. Offering all kinds of shopping facilities, the Holstenstraße was Germanys first pedestrian precinct and was opened in 1951. It runs from the old Market, past the Asmus-Bremer Square, up to the train station and ends at the shopping centre Sophienhof. On the way, you will pass the Ostseehalle, Kiels largest hall for concerts, events and trade fairs, located on the Europaplatz (Europe Square) which has an interesting architecture. One month before Christmas the whole shopping area turns into a giant Christmas Market. Wooden huts, decorated with strings of candle like lights, offer a various selection of arts and crafts as well as culinary delights. The Bergstraße (English: Hill Street) offers a number of discos, pubs and clubs. Here you can party every night until 3 or 4am and afterwards enjoy Kiels best French Fries at the Aurette, an oily little food stall. The Bergstraße will lead you from the downtown area to the Dreiecksplatz (Triangle Square) where another popular shopping street, the Holtenauer Street, starts.
