Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna canceled after Austrian police say foiled terrorist plot targeted shows

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour shows in Vienna have been canceled because of what Austrian police say was a planned terrorist attack targeting the concerts.

“With confirmation from government officials of a planned terrorist attack at Ernst Happel Stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety,” Barracuda Music, an event organizer in the city, posted Wednesday evening on Instagram.

Taylor Nation, an Instagram account run by Swift’s team, reposted the message to its story.

According to the post, all tickets will be refunded and ticketholders can visit a website to request refunds.

Swift's website also appears to reflect the cancellation. The Vienna shows under the "tour" tab now have a note accompanying the date and location information.

"*All tickets will be automatically refunded within the next 10 business days," it says.

Swift has yet to say anything on social media, nor has she confirmed the cancellations.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer shared his disappointment over the cancellations on X and said the situation was serious. He thanked officials for identifying the threat early and preventing what could have been a tragedy.

Swift was scheduled to perform at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for the international leg of the Eras Tour.

Earlier, officials said two people were arrested Wednesday in connection with allegations of plans to attack major events in Vienna, including Swift's coming concerts .

Two U.S. officials familiar with the investigation said Austrian law enforcement is looking for an additional person or people who may have some knowledge of the plans.

One of the individuals who were arrested by Austrian federal and state police was a 19-year-old who is alleged to have pledged his allegiance to ISIS, Vienna State Police Director Franz Ruf and Police Chief Gerhard Pürstl said at a news conference Wednesday.

Ruf said Thursday in an interview with Austria’s public broadcaster ORF that the suspect had uploaded an oath of allegiance to the current leader of ISIS to an internet account just a few weeks ago.

The pair had aspirational plans for attacking Vienna’s major events sites and specifically had homed in on this coming weekend’s Swift concerts, according to two U.S. officials briefed on the matter. They both became radicalized through the internet and are alleged to have had specific and detailed plans for how to carry out an attack, the officials said.

They had been under surveillance for some time and were well-known to the Austrians, the officials said.

A bomb squad found chemical substances when the 19-year-old was arrested, authorities said. Investigators were working to determine whether the substances could have been used to build a bomb, authorities said.

Officials said that the 19-year-old bought chemicals but not all the components needed to assemble a bomb and that most likely he would not have been able to do before this weekend’s events.

However, the officials say Austrian law enforcement believed that they should be taken into custody to make sure the pair did not try to conduct an attack using other means.

Ultimately, the two were arrested as officials announced a robust security plan had been put in place for the Swift concerts and Vienna at large. Swift’s team then announced that the concerts would be canceled.

Austria’s Cobra unit, which is similar to the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team, assisted with the arrests.

Two U.S. officials familiar with the investigation said Austrian law enforcement are looking for an additional individual or individuals who may have some knowledge of this attempted attack.

Officials in Europe and in the U.S. told NBC News that there was no specific plot to injure Swift herself but that the attack was focused on the event.

A police official had said earlier that there were no plans to cancel the concerts and told reporters that “the concrete danger has been minimized.” It is not clear why those plans changed.

Swift has spoken about her concerns of a terrorist attack at one of her stadium shows. In 2019, she told Elle magazine it was her biggest fear.

“After the Manchester Arena bombing and the Vegas concert shooting , I was completely terrified to go on tour this time because I didn’t know how we were going to keep 3 million fans safe over seven months,” Swift said ahead of the Lover Tour, which was then canceled because of Covid.

She added, “There was a tremendous amount of planning, expense, and effort put into keeping my fans safe.”

“My fear of violence has continued into my personal life,” she said. “I carry QuikClot army grade bandage dressing, which is for gunshot or stab wounds.”

Swift rarely cancels shows. Most recently, she postponed the second of three Eras shows in Rio de Janeiro because of extreme temperatures after a fan died at the first of the shows owing to the heat.

Some visitors claim to witness 'miracle' when viewing blessed statue during Ohio tour

PARMA, Ohio (WKRC) - Some visitors claimed to have witnessed a "miracle" when viewing a blessed statue during its tour across Ohio.

According to WJW, the International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima is on tour across Northeast Ohio. Per the outlet, the statue travels the world to spread the message of Our Lady of Fatima.

Per the station, the statue was commissioned back in 1947 following specifications of Venerable Sister Lucia, who was one of three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. According to Britannica, in the Catholic faith, Lucia was one of three peasant children who witnessed a woman who "identified herself as the Lady of the Rosary," or the Virgin Mary, on May 13, 1917. Per the outlet, the children witnessed the vision on five other occasions and were told that God would perform a miracle on October 13 so that others would believe.

On that day, a crowd of around 70,000 people gathered in Fatima and reportedly witnessed the Sun fall toward the Earth. That event, which was reported in newspapers at the time, is sometimes referred to as the "Miracle of the Sun." The children would not claim to witness the Lady of the Rosary after that day, per Britannica.

The statue was on display at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in Canton, Ohio on Friday. Reporters with WJW spoke with a woman who claims to have witnessed what she is calling a "miracle."

“I knew it was a miracle because I’d been looking at her all morning,” Connie Liptak told WJW. “They’re really closed. I mean, you can really see her lashes are down.”

“When the sun was dancing in the sky, everyone was looking up and then suddenly it started plummeting to the earth,” said Katie Moran.

Moran, who is the president of the World Apostolate of Fatima USA, also told WJW that she was a witness to the phenomena, which she captured on camera. The images, which were obtained by WJW, appear to show the statue of Our Lady of Fatima opening and closing her eyes.

When speaking with WJW's reporters, Moran said she has worked to bring other versions of the statue of Our Lady of Fatima to the area, but said the "international" statue is special in many ways.

According to the station, the international statue is thought to be the most accurate representation of the entity that the children claimed to have witnessed in 1917. The statue was also blessed by the bishop of Fatima and Venerable Pope Pius 12th.

Some told WJW that reports of miraculous healing, such as the curing of infertility and cancer, follow the statue wherever she goes and is a reason behind why it tours the world.

“We know that she’s wept 15 times,” Larry Maginot, the statue's custody, told the station.

Maginot told WJW that a three-year-old boy in Vietnam who suffered from incurable malaria miraculously recovered after his father brought him before the statue.

“According to theologians, mystically, her presence is there with the statue,” Moran explained to WJW.

Moran told the outlet that she had been taking pictures of the statue for social media when it was on display at St. Andrews in Parma, Ohio, when she noticed an anomaly.

“I took it and thought, ‘that’s really nice,’ and I took one more to be sure and when I looked at it, the eyes were closed and I go, ‘wow!’” Moran told the outlet.

Moran told WJW that she believed the Virgin Mary was once again sending a message to the world.

“For those who believe, no proof is necessary. for those who don’t, no proof is possible. It’s faith and I believe,” Moran said, per the outlet.

World Golf Hall of Famer Chi Chi Rodriguez dies at 88

His given name was Juan, though the golf world knew him as Chi Chi, a better fit for the outsized personality who dwarfed his 5-foot-7, 135-pound frame. He was a golfer, yes, and a good one, but it was his showmanship and repartee that helped place him perpetually on center stage.

Chi Chi Rodriguez died Thursday at age 88,  the news reported by the Puerto Rico Golf Association  with no cause listed, closing a chapter of golf history that began in a dirt-poor town in Puerto Rico and ended with one of the more decorated players in history. Rodriguez won eight PGA Tour events and 22 senior tour titles, the victories paving the way for his 1992 induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Rodriguez also received the USGA’s highest honor, the Bob Jones Award (1989), and the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America’s highest honor, the Old Tom Morris Award (1989). It was a life well played, even including serving as the Grand Marshal of the Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif., in 1995.

He was born into poverty in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, one of six kids. His father earned $18 a week as a dishwasher and cattle handler. When Chi Chi was 7, to help out his family, he went to work earning $1 a day delivering water to those working at a sugarcane plant.

His introduction to golf came a year later, when he began working as a forecaddie. Soon after, he fashioned a golf club, more or less, from a guava branch and used it to hit tin cans. He soon began caddieing and playing golf in earnest with other caddies one day a week.

As he improved, he began to boast that one day he would be beating Hogan and Snead, thought to be a pipe dream inasmuch as no Puerto Rican golfer had ever made it to the PGA Tour. “They told me I was a hound dreaming about pork chops,” Chi Chi told Jaime Diaz, then of Sports Illustrated.

Following a two-year stint in the Army from 1954 to 1956, Rodriguez returned to Puerto Rico and was hired as the caddie master at Dorado Beach Resort. There, he began taking lessons from its resident pro, Pete Cooper, who won five PGA Tour events and the PGA Senior Championship in 1961.

Rodriguez turned pro in 1960 and joined the PGA Tour full time in 1961. Two years later, he won the Denver Open Invitational, the first of his eight PGA Tour victories. He was exceedingly long, by any standard, much less of a man of such small stature. He, too, had a world-class short game.

Chi Chi was an entertainer from the start. When he would hole a birdie putt, he’d place what became his signature Panama fedora over the hole, to keep the ball from escaping, he said, and then did “a one-man tango,” around the hole, Diaz wrote.

It was a practice that didn’t necessarily go over well with Rodriguez’ peers. “When you throw down your hat and dance on the greens, you leave spike marks for guys who haven't putted yet,” Bob Rosburg told Sports Illustrated.

Several players preferred not playing with him, Dave Marr among them. So Chi Chi devised another way to celebrate a birdie, the sword dance that would come to define him. “I figured the hole was the bull and the putter was my sword,” he told the Orlando Sentinel. “Then I would wipe the blood off and put it back in the scabbard.”

He became known as the clown prince of golf, who augmented his manifest golf skills with stand-up comedy:

• “When I caddied, I was so small that they used me as a tee marker. If a guy had an unplayable lie, he'd use me for two club lengths.”
• “After all these years, it's still embarrassing for me to play on the American golf tour. Like the time I asked my caddie for a sand wedge and he came back 10 minutes later with a ham on rye.”
• “I am a millionaire today and my wife deserves all of the credit. Before I met her, I was a multi-millionaire.”
• “Jack Nicklaus is a legend in his spare time.”

Rodriguez, along with Lee Trevino and Arnold Palmer, helped establish the Senior PGA Tour (now the PGA Tour Champions) in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Rodriguez had a serious side, too. He was a humanitarian and it usually involved kids. In 1979, he started the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation in Clearwater, Fla., for disadvantaged youth. “I ask God every night why me,” Rodriguez told the Orlando Sentinel. “Then I see a kid with a problem. And that’s the way I get my answer. I don’t do these things for any special reason. I just want to provide kids with something good.”

He was motivated, he said often, by his own childhood. “Why do I love kids so much? Because I was never a kid myself,” he said. “I was too poor to really have a childhood.”

Vance, known for his best-selling memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy," was elected to office less than two years ago to represent Ohio. Many Republicans have long viewed him as a future face of the party, given his Midwestern background and his appeal to many MAGA adherents.

But on the heels of a CNN analysis that found Vance was the least-liked nonincumbent vice-presidential nominee in at least 44 years, the network also reported that the GOP lawmaker had a double-digit unfavorable rating with voters across the Midwest.

A CNN poll in July found Vance had a 28% favorable rating and a 44% unfavorable rating — or a minus-16-point favorability rating — among registered voters surveyed in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

For Republicans banking on Vance to boost the party across the Midwest, his standing is far below where he'll need to be to win over swing voters in key states such as Michigan and Wisconsin.

During an appearance last week, Harry Enten, a CNN data reporter, also pointed to a data aggregate putting Vance at a minus-5-point favorability rating after the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Vance is still early on in his political career, but the Trump campaign needs him to move the needle now.

Even in the GOP-leaning Ohio, Vance vastly underperformed other statewide Republicans on the ballot during his 2022 Senate race.

While Republican Gov. Mike DeWine won reelection by 25 points that year, Vance defeated his opponent — then-Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan — by only 6 percentage points.

Democrats have needled Republicans over the selection of Vance, arguing that his views on issues such as abortion will repel female voters. But Trump has so far stood behind his vice-presidential pick.
