NOTICE 7/17/24 | BCDH Has Detected West Nile In Bucks County

Since April, Bucks County Department of Health (BCDH) staff has been conducting outreach, removing mosquito habitats, responding to complaints, and treating standing water for mosquito larvae.

These efforts aim to reduce the mosquito population and lower the risk of Bucks County residents contracting mosquito-borne diseases. BCDH have also been collecting adult mosquitoes using monitoring traps and sending them to the State laboratory for analysis of West Nile Virus (WNV) and other mosquito-borne diseases.

This data helps BCDH determine if an adult mosquito control event is necessary, which could include barrier treatments with powered backpacks, hand fogging, or utilizing our ultra-low volume (ULV) truck-mounted sprayer.

The BCDH have detected WNV within adult mosquitoes in northern, central, and southern portions of Bucks County. As the mosquito season progresses, an adulticide treatment event may be necessary.

Information regarding West Nile Virus, the WNV program, and what residents can do to protect themselves can be found on the State website here:  https://www.dep.pa.gov/Business/ProgramIntegration/Vector-Management/Mosquitoes/Pages/default.aspx

BRISTOL, LEVITTOWN & MORRISVILLE

Bristol is full of historic buildings and locations just waiting to be discovered. In 2017, Bristol Borough was named the winner of the  Small Business Revolution "Main Street" competition . The town was selected from 14,000 nominations to have several Main Street businesses completely remodeled! Watch our interview with the hosts below and watch the entire series on Hulu .

  • Harriet Tubman statue along Bristol waterfront

Bristol Borough was originally settled in 1681 and named after the town in England. Used as a port and dock, it has a rich history in the birth of Philadelphia trading. It served as the original County seat for Bucks County in the 18 th century. The town gained national attention in 1961 after the band The Dovells aired their song “Bristol Stomp” after it, which hit #2 on the Billboard charts.

Levittown was named after William J. Levitt, famous builder and developer of Levitt & Sons. This cookie-cutter construction company of the 1950’s designed the “Levittowner” developments of planned single-family homes with lawns to form an easy, complete community. The original that we hear of so often is actually in New York, but Pennsylvania’s Levittown is the second one ever built.

Just opposite Trenton, New Jersey lies Morrisville, the oldest borough in Bucks County. Sometimes referred to as the “Falls of the Delaware,” it was once on the great highway between lower Delaware and New York. The name derives from Robert Morris, the great financier of the Revolutionary War.

Founded in 1681, the town of Bristol , Pennsylvania boasts a long and proud history.

Located on the banks of the Delaware River, Bristol served an important role in both the Revolutionary and Civil wars, and at one time it was a major textile-milling center. The old-world influence still exists today, as evidenced by the town’s many antique shops, historic mansions and significant landmarks.

An important local figure, textile-milling tycoon Joseph R. Grundy, lends his name to many establishments around town, including the Margaret R. Grundy Memorial Library and the Margaret R. Grundy Memorial Museum. The latter showcases an impressive collection of authentic Victorian-era décor and furniture, and free, guided tours are offered Tuesday through Thursday as well as Saturday.

Getting Here

Driving the 25 miles from Center City to the Historic Bristol Borough takes roughly 35 minutes. Metered street parking and municipal lots are available. SEPTA operates a station in Bristol, which takes about an hour to reach by train from Center City.

Attractions like Bristol Waterfront Park and Silver Lake Nature Center receive high marks from nature lovers.

In The Town

A mix of independently owned restaurants and shops lines Mill Street. This charming stretch runs through the center of town, all the way down to the Delaware River. Radcliffe Street, which meets with Mill Street at the King George II Inn — billed as America’s oldest operating inn — is also part of the Main Street experience.

For nature lovers, Bristol Waterfront Park provides a tranquil oasis for fishing and walking along the river. Just outside of town, outdoor enthusiasts love Silver Lake Nature Center, which features a butterfly garden, lakes, marshes, meadows, a bog and 4.5 miles of nature trails that highlight the area’s diverse plant and animal life.

Seasonal Events

The biggest event of the year, Historic Bristol Day (October) features a family-friendly street fair packed with arts and crafts, food vendors, entertainers, children’s games, a sailing regatta and more.

On the First Friday of every month, businesses in Bristol’s historic shopping district stay open late and offer discounts, specials and giveaways.

The longest running exhibition of antique cars in the country, the Antique Auto Show, attracts car enthusiasts on the first Sunday in May.

House Tours!

Tax collector/BCHF member Anna Bono Larrisey has been working tirelessly to secure locations for the historic house, and garden tours, and tea. This is the perfect opportunity to visit some hidden jewels tucked away on the charming streets of historic Bristol Borough.

House Tour *910 Radcliffe Street. [mask required for entry]

Noted as the oldest residence in Bristol Borough, with dates of 1741 and 1765, the residence underwent a large scale renovation/addition in 2009. The Comly House stood outside the original town limits. This riverfront Colonial main house retains its original architecture that includes a lock set on the front door built by the locksmith to King George. The restoration of the house preserved its historic features while updating other areas.

Garden tours: 518 Lafayette Street and 328 Radcliffe Street.

Don’t miss an opportunity to take a “Walking Tour” with the quite knowledgeable docents, and learn about the historic buildings along Radcliffe Street. Enjoy a scenic stroll at a leisurely pace from the fountain at the corner of Radcliffe & Walnut Streets to St. Mark Church.

There will be TWO tours: 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Or take a tour of the recently-renovated Margaret R. Grundy Museum, 610 Radcliffe Street, the home of industrialist and former US Senator, Joseph Ridgway Grundy [January 13, 1863 March 3, 1961].

The exquisitely restored Museum will be open for tours of the 1st floor from 10:00AM-4:00PM.

*Masks and social distancing required. Due to safety guidelines, a limited number of guests will be able to access the house at one time.

The Artists of Bristol will be exhibiting on the Museum Park level from 10:00AM – 4:00PM.

The Grundy Museum is proud to partner with BCHF for this Annual Historic Bristol Day.

The Bristol Borough Municipal Building at 250 Pond Street will be open from 10:00AM-3:00PM.

See the “Welcome Friend” sign that greeted Marquis de Lafayette on his “Farewell Tour of America” in 1824, a half-century after the Revolutionary War that was characterized by a fast pace, as well as very frequent unscheduled stops.

11:00AM- 2:00PM – Children’s Corner occupies the outside grounds of the Margaret R. Grundy Library, 680 Radcliffe Street. This activity includes a “Living Wax Museum: Past, Present & Future” by the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade gifted and enrichment students of Lori Helkowski’s classes from Snyder-Girotti Elementary School from 11:00AM to noon. This research was done by Grundy Library archivists/ authors Harold and the late Carol Mitchener utilizing the Grundy Library archives. It is most assuredly NOT lacking in personality!
