Exploring the world as a career: opportunities in travel and tourism.

A career in travel and tourism offers diverse opportunities, with growth driven by industry expansion, requiring strong communication, organisational skills, and niche expertise

The travel and tourism industry has long been a significant contributor to economies around the world, and India is no exception. With a rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and an ever-growing domestic and international tourist base, the industry offers a wide array of career opportunities. The resurgence of tourism following the COVID-19 pandemic has further fuelled demand for professionals equipped with the right skills and knowledge to cater to this dynamic sector.

The Indian tourism industry is on a robust growth trajectory, with a forecast from  FAITH (Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism & Hospitality) predicting it will generate around 53 million jobs by 2035. The sector, which already accounts for about 9.1 per cent of the country's GDP, is expected to expand even further, driven by government initiatives such as ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ and investments in tourism infrastructure. This growth is not only creating new job opportunities but also increasing the demand for a skilled workforce capable of meeting the evolving needs of travellers.

For those considering a career in travel and tourism, the prospects are diverse and promising. The industry offers roles that cater to a wide range of interests and skills, from customer-facing positions such as travel consultants and tour managers to more specialised roles such as medical tourism managers and destination management professionals.

Educational pathways and skill development

Embarking on a career in travel and tourism typically begins with obtaining a relevant degree or diploma. Institutions across India offer a variety of programmes tailored to different aspects of the industry. Colleges such as St. Xavier's College in Mumbai, Christ University in Bangalore, and Presidency University in Kolkata provide undergraduate and diploma programmes in Travel and Tourism Management. These courses equip students with foundational knowledge and practical skills, preparing them for the demands of the industry.

In addition to formal education, certain key skills are essential for success in this sector. Communication skills are paramount, as professionals in this field frequently interact with clients and colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Effective customer service, language proficiency, and cultural awareness further enhance a professional's ability to cater to the varied needs of tourists. Moreover, organisational skills and flexibility are critical, given the often unpredictable nature of the industry, where working irregular hours is common.

Leadership and teamwork are also important, particularly for those aspiring to managerial roles. The ability to work collaboratively and lead teams is highly valued, especially in positions such as tourism managers and event managers. Furthermore, technical skills, including familiarity with travel management software and digital tools, have become increasingly important in the digital age.

Career paths and job opportunities

The tourism industry offers a wide range of job opportunities, directly linked to the qualifications and skills acquired through relevant education and training. Fresh graduates can explore roles such as travel consultants, tour managers, and guest relations executives, with salaries ranging from INR 1,80,000 to INR 5,00,000 annually, depending on the position and level of experience.

Travel consultants, for instance, assist clients in planning and booking travel arrangements, often working with both individual and corporate clients. Tour managers, on the other hand, oversee group travel itineraries, ensuring that trips run smoothly and that clients have a positive experience. Guest relations executives, typically employed in hotels or resorts, focus on ensuring guest satisfaction, handling inquiries, and addressing any issues that may arise during a guest's stay.

For those with a passion for writing and storytelling, travel writing offers a unique opportunity to share travel experiences and insights with a broader audience. This role often involves freelancing, allowing for flexibility in terms of work schedule and location. Similarly, roles such as travel coordinators and event managers offer opportunities to work in dynamic environments, managing travel logistics and organising events related to tourism.

In addition to these roles, the industry also provides specialised opportunities in areas such as medical tourism and digital travel marketing. Medical tourism managers, for example, focus on promoting healthcare services to international patients seeking treatment in India. As the demand for healthcare services grows, so too does the need for professionals who can navigate the complexities of this niche market.

The travel and tourism industry in India is dominated by several key players, offering competitive pay and growth opportunities. Companies such as MakeMyTrip, Yatra, and Thomas Cook are prominent employers, providing a range of services from booking flights and hotels to organising comprehensive tour packages. The hospitality industry, represented by giants such as Taj Hotels and the Oberoi Group, also offers numerous career opportunities, particularly in guest relations and management roles.

Airlines such as Air India, IndiGo, and Vistara are major employers, offering positions ranging from cabin crew to customer service and operations management. The rise of digital platforms has further expanded opportunities, with companies such as OYO Rooms and Cleartrip leading the way in online travel services.

Government tourism departments also play a significant role in the industry, promoting tourism and managing tourist facilities and services across the country. These departments often collaborate with private companies and event management firms to organise tourism-related events, conferences, and exhibitions.

Future prospects

The future of the tourism industry in India looks bright, with domestic tourists expected to reach 300 million by 2027. This anticipated growth is set to create a myriad of new opportunities for professionals in the sector. However, with this growth comes increased competition, making it essential for aspiring professionals to continuously develop their skills and stay updated with industry trends.

One of the key strategies for success in this competitive landscape is to identify a specific area within the travel and tourism sector that aligns with one's interests and career goals. Whether it's eco-tourism, adventure tourism, or wellness tourism, developing niche expertise can set professionals apart from their peers.

Practical experience is equally important, as it allows individuals to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. Rural counties whose economies rely on tourism are leading the way in post-pandemic job recovery, but overall rural employment still lags slightly behind pre-pandemic levels, according to a Daily Yonder analysis of employment data .

Overall rural employment was down slightly in June (the most recent month for which county-level jobs data is available) compared to the same month in 2019 before the pandemic. In nonmetropolitan, or rural, counties in June, jobs dipped by 0.16% compared to June 2019. That represents 32,000 fewer jobs compared to pre-pandemic. levels. In June of this year, there were 20.5 million rural jobs nationwide.

Employment in metropolitan counties, meanwhile, had 3.7 million jobs more in June than they did in June of 2019, a 2.7% increase over pre-pandemic employment.

Employment Growth Varied by Industry

During the initial economic downturn that followed the pandemic lockdown in the spring of 2020, rural recreation counties experienced the steepest drop in employment among all rural county types. But these counties have since seen the most significant job gains.

We’ve been monitoring monthly and annual employment trends by county type to track the recovery of rural communities since the beginning of the pandemic.

Rural recreation counties saw more growth than other types of counties that are rural. These communities gained 57,500 jobs between June of 2019 and June of 2024, representing a 1.9% increase in employment.

  • Rural counties where mining and natural resource extraction drives the local economy fared the worst compared to other types of counties. In June of 2024, mining jobs were down 1.77% since 2019, representing a loss of 24,300 rural mining jobs.
  • Rural counties where manufacturing was the dominant industry lost 62,200 jobs between June of 2019 and June of 2024, a 1.31% drop in employment.
  • Employment in farming-dependent counties, meanwhile, lost 6,200  jobs since June of  2019, representing a 0.47% drop in employment.
  • In places where no single industry dominates the local economy, jobs dropped by 0.34%, a loss of 25,000 jobs between June 2019 and June of 2024.
  • In rural counties where the local or federal government drives the economy, employment increased by 28,000 jobs, representing a one percent gain in employment.

Job Gains Vary by Region in Rural Recreation Areas

Rural recreation-based counties in the interior Northwest, which includes the states of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, saw the largest percentage growth in employment. Between June of 2019 and June of 2024, rural recreation counties of the interior Northwest gained 16,100 jobs, almost a 10% increase in employment.

Rural Bonner County, Idaho, for example, added 2,600 jobs between June of 2019 and June of 2024. That’s a 13% increase in employment compared to June of 2019. Bonner County is on Idaho’s western border, adjacent to Spokane, Washington, and has a population of 47,100 residents.

Rural recreation counties in the South experienced the highest raw number of jobs increase since the pandemic, gaining 34,000 jobs since June of 2019, a 6.8% increase in employment.

In rural Sevier County, Tennessee, employment grew by 8%, adding 4,600 jobs to the local economy. With a population of 98,400 residents, Sevier County contains part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and includes the tourist destinations of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.

Economic Industry Definitions

The Economic Research Service (ERS) is a branch of the USDA devoted to analyzing economic trends to inform policymakers, industry groups, and other federal agencies. The ERS assigns all U.S. counties into one of six mutually - exclusive categories that best describes economic dependence. Timber-dependence data from Headwaters Economics was added as an additional category to the ERS analysis. The ERS defines economic amenity types in the following ways:

Farming - A farming-dependent county is a county where agriculture contributes to 25% or more of annual labor and earnings or when, during the same period, 16% or more of the county’s jobs were in agriculture in 2010-2012.

Mining - A mining-dependent county is a county where mining contributes to 13% or more of average annual labor and earnings or when, during the same period, 8% or more of the county’s jobs were in mining in 2010-2012.

Manufacturing - A manufacturing-dependent county is a county where manufacturing contributes to 23% or more of annual labor and earnings or whe, during the same period, 16% or more of the county’s jobs were in manufacturing in 2010-2012.

Federal/State Government - A federal/state Government-dependent county is a county where government contributes to 14% or more of annual labor and earnings or when, during the same period, 9% or more of the county’s jobs were in government in 2010-2012.

Recreation - Recreation-dependent counties are defined using a weighted index that considers  three components - jobs, earnings in entertainment, recreation, accommodations, food/drink, and real estate, and the percentage of housing set aside exclusively for seasonal use. Recreation counties are counties with a weighted index one standard deviation or more above the mean.

Timber - Timber counties are defined as counties where 20% or more employment in industries including or related to timber.

Nonspecialized - Non-specialized counties did not meet thresholds for any economic type.

Not all recreation areas gained jobs since the pandemic. Rural recreation counties in the Mid Atlantic and New England actually lost jobs. In the Mid Atlantic region, rural recreation counties lost 5,200 jobs between June of 2019 and June of 2024, a 1.5% decrease in employment. New England recreation counties lost about 2,200 jobs since before the pandemic, representing about a half percentage point decrease in employment.

  • Between June of 2019 and June of 2024, recreation counties in the rural Midwest saw employment grow by a percentage point, equal to about 9,000 jobs.
  • Recreation counties in the rural Southwest saw a 1.3% increase in jobs, representing an additional 4,200 jobs.
  • In the Coastal West, employment in rural recreation counties grew by 0.7%, representing an additional 2,300 jobs.

DBEDT releases 2023 State of Hawai’i Data Book

vacancies in tourism department

The Maui News

WAILUKU – The Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) today released the 2023 edition of the State of Hawai’i Data Book. The Data Book is the 56th edition of its series.

The Hawai’i State Data Book is the most comprehensive statistical book about Hawai’i in a single compilation. Classified into 24 sections with 845 data tables, it covers a broad range of information in areas such as population, education, environment, economics, energy, real estate, construction, business enterprises, government, tourism and transportation.

The book is in electronic form and is available on the DBEDT website at: dbedt.hawaii.gov/economic/databook. The data tables can be downloaded in whole or in part as either PDF or Excel files.

“The Data Book has been around over half of a century and has been one of the most popular products DBEDT offers to the public. The book is an essential tool for people to know Hawai’i’s history, current situation and future development,” said DBEDT Director James Kunane Tokioka. “Our researchers also produced two products based on the data book. One of them is the County Social, Business and Economic Trends and the other is the Data Book Time Series; both can be found on our website.”

Some interesting data in this newest edition include:

Education and Social Aspects

*Public school enrollment declined about 1,000 students from the 2022-2023 to the 2023- 2024 school year. It was a decrease smaller than experienced in the previous few years. Public school enrollment declined about 3,000 students per year for three consecutive years since the 2020-2021 school year. (Table 3.13)

* Enrollment increased at the University of Hawai’i (UH) by 560 students and UH Community Colleges by 624 students from Fall 2022 to Fall 2023. (Table 3.24)

*Demand for eBooks/audio/music circulation in the Hawai’i library system has been strong since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared with 2019, hours open were 20.4 percent lower but eBooks/audio/music circulation was 40.8 percent higher in 2023. (Table 3.29)

* A total of 20,777 marriages were reported in Hawai’i in 2022, of which 7,068 marriages were resident marriages. Except for 2020, less than 40 percent of total marriages were resident marriages between 2004 and 2022. Resident marriages were on a clear declining trend since 2010 when there were 9,117 resident marriages. (Table 2.39)

* In 2022 there were 694 people 100 years old or older that were recipients of Old Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance (OASDI). (Table 11.06)

* In 1980, the number of death dispositions by burial and cremation was close at 2,343 and 2,241, respectively. Cremation took the top position shortly after and in 2022 the number of cremations was 4 times greater than burials at 10,202 and 2,445, respectively. Disposition for Medical Science has been slowly growing, from 40 in 2000 to 126 in 2022. (Table 2.21)

Employment, Businesses and Economy

• The percentage of multiple jobholders in Hawai’i increased from 5.5% in 2022 to 7.2 % in 2023. The U.S. average showed the same direction but a less dramatic increase – from 4.8% in 2022 to 5.0% in 2023. (Table 12.24)

* According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics compilation of employment for May 2023, fast food and counter workers again topped the list of Hawai’i’s largest occupations at 24,080 and retail salespersons again came in second with employment of 16,420. Fast food and counter workers had a mean hourly wage of $14.90 and mean annual wage of $30,990 while retail salespersons had a mean hourly wage of $18.81 and annual mean wage of $39,130. (Table 12.36)

* In 2023, total revenue of duty-free stores was four times greater than their total revenues in 2022, but it was only 12.1% of 2019 level, suggesting the impact of COVID-19 was catastrophic to these stores. (Table 23.09)

* In 2023, there were 47 credit unions in Hawai’i serving 869,628 members. Compared with 1999 when compilation of the statistics started, the number of credit unions decreased by 59 but the number of credit union members increased 47.4 percent. (Table 15.05)

* The U.S. Department of Defense budget for Hawai’i military construction shows a total obligated authority of $1.41 billion for the 2024 federal fiscal year (FFY) and $1.67 billion for FFY2025 largely due to the $1.32 billion and $1.20 billion, respectively for Navy Dry Dock 3 replacement at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. (Table 10.11)

• The federal government collected $11.3 billion in Hawai’i in 2023 federal fiscal year (FFY) reflecting a decrease of 2.3% over FFY 2022. This was influenced by a 3.0% decrease in net individual income and employment tax collections. Among the other tax collection components, estate, gift and excise tax collections saw increases while business income saw a very small increase. (Table 9.02)

• In 2023, Hawai’i’s commodity imports totaled $2.71 billion, a 7.7% increase from the $2.52 billion in 2022. Imports from top-ranking South Korea totaled $705 million and Japan was second with a total of $471 million in 2023. (Table 24.06)

Travel, Recreation and Transportation

• The statewide average daily hotel room rate continued its climb in 2023 to $377.55, 1.3 percent higher than the average rate in 2022. It was a moderate increase compared to the two-digit rate increases experienced in the previous two years. In 2023, Maui had the highest average room rate at $591.09, followed by Hawai’i ($427.36), Kaua’i ($420.02), and O’ahu ($281.69). (Table 23.34 and 23.36)

• Honolulu Zoo had the most attendees since COVID-19 at 501,967 people in 2023. It is 88.2 percent of the number of attendees in 2019 and 160,498 more people that attended than in 2021. (Table 7.44)

• As of December 31, 2023, there were 12,484 vessels registered with Hawai’i State Department of Land and Natural Resources. The most common type of vessel was “open motorboat” which made up 53 percent of all vessels and 99 percent of the registered vessels were for “pleasure.” (Table 18.47)

• Out of the state total of 4,529 miles of streets and highways in 2023, O’ahu has more than one third, at 1,720 miles. Of that 1,720 miles, only eight miles are categorized as unpaved, which is the fewest miles of unpaved roads on any of the islands in Hawai’i. (Table 18.02)

• Los Angeles was the most frequent destination of transpacific flights to depart from the state of Hawai’i in 2023. In July 2023, more than one in five transpacific, scheduled or chartered, flights that departed Hawai’i were for arrival in Los Angeles. (Table 18.39)

Miscellaneous:

• During the 2024 Hawai’i legislative session, the House introduced 1,293 bills in which 143 bills were passed and 140 of those became law. The Senate introduced 1,385 bills; 119 bills passed and 113 of those bills became law. (Table 8.15)

• In 2023, the Hawai’i Land Use Commission (LUC) made a reclassification of 200 acres on Lāna’i from Agricultural to Urban. The LUC retained the classification of 973,792 acres in Conservation and the 11,015 acres in Rural. • United States Postal Service pieces of mail originating in Hawai’i steadily declined from 595 million in 2011 to 429 million in 2023. Over the same period, the number of postal stations declined to almost half (43 to 25), whereas the number of post offices has increased (70 to 85). (Table 16.05)

• The inventory of cattle and calves was the largest at 148,000 in 2023. It is the highest count since 2010 at 151,000 (Table 19.17).
