A Globe Well Travelled

A self-guided walking tour of adorable Utrecht

' src=

I’m surprised that more tourists don’t know about this adorable city with its gorgeous canals and rich history.

My recent visit to Utrecht marked the first time that I’d ventured out of Amsterdam to see more of the Netherlands. With the fourth largest population in the country, Utrecht felt lively but also somewhat relaxed and quaint after the commotion found on the streets of Amsterdam.

I was lucky enough to have a local guide for my trip to Utrecht. Roxy, a Dutch friend that Rob and I met in Australia, has lived in the city and was happy to show us all the best spots (though she wasn’t so keen for me to share all her city secrets here on the blog!).

Roxy told me that Utrecht is a truly a gem and it would be a shame if it became overcrowded, and of course I have to agree, though as a travel blogger I feel obliged to encourage responsible travel to all of the places that I have enjoyed visiting. Utrecht is definitely a destination that I would recommend.

How to get to Utrecht from Amsterdam:

From Amsterdam Centraal, you can buy an Intercity day return ticket to Utrecht Centraal. The journey only takes about 30 minutes and trains depart fairly frequently (a few every hour) throughout the day.

Boekenkast street art in Utrecht

How to get around Utrecht:

While Utrecht’s old town is easily walkable, Rob and I actually rented bicycles for our day of exploration. This allowed us to visit some murals and cafes that aren’t included my suggested walking tour. If you like, you can do a bicycle tour to Utrecht’s hidden treasures on top of this walking tour which will give you the opportunity to see some exciting areas outside of the old town.

When to visit Utrecht:

Although Utrecht isn’t as busy as Amsterdam, it still does draw some crowds. The old town is where tourists go to explore and locals go to shop. It’s obviously going to be busier on weekends than on weekdays, and Saturdays are significantly busier than Sundays as there are some popular markets happening within the city.

Vredenburg Market – Utrecht’s largest market – takes place on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. If you can plan your visit for a Wednesday or Friday, they might just be the best days to go as you can visit the markets without the Saturday crowds.

As far as seasons go, I travelled in late autumn and thoroughly enjoyed all the pretty leaves, though I think anytime of the year would be nice. In the lead up to Christmas, there are festive light decorations on some of the main streets. Spring would also be lovely as the tulips would be in season, and in summer I’m told that everyone enjoys the nice weather by drinking and dining outdoors along the canals (though of course this is peak season for visitors so the city will be at its busiest).

Utrecht self-guided walking tour:

The bell tower of Buurkerk (Neighbour Church) in Utrecht

Start your day by walking straight from Utrecht Centraal Station to the picturesque old town. Make your first stop Buurkerk (Neighbour Church). Although it’s not quite as glamorous as the Dom Tower across the river, this historic church still has an impressive bell tower that dates back to the 12th century. The church also houses the quirky Museum Speelklok – a cheerful museum of self-playing musical instruments!

It’s also worth having a peek at Huis Zoudenbalch while you’re here. This building has a medieval castle-like appearance and is situated on the street just behind the church. In the centuries since it was built in 1467, it functioned as an orphanage, a school, and housing. In 1903 it was mostly destroyed by fire but thankfully it was restored to look just like the original.

Poffertjes pancakes at Martin's Bridge in Utrecht

Next, head to Maartensbrug (Martin’s Bridge) which crosses the Oudegracht (Old Canal) as it winds through the city. This bridge is a great spot to snap some photos and to pick up a morning treat from the resident food truck. On my winter trip it was selling poffertjes (mini pancakes covered in butter and icing sugar or nutella) but I’ve heard that ice cream is sold there in the summer!

If you’re hungry for brunch or lunch, stop in at Stach which is right next to Martin’s Bridge. This cafe chain sells some truly delicious sandwiches and snacks – we tried the vegan chicken avocado sandwich with Sriracha mayo (so good!) and the gevuld speculaas which is sort of like a Dutch spiced almond cake that’s consumed during the holiday season.

Once you’ve had something to eat, head to Utrecht’s most prominent attraction… the Domtoren (Dom Tower)! At 112 metres (368 feet), this 600 year-old structure is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. You can usually climb the Dom Tower for a small fee and be rewarded with fabulous views over the city. Unfortunately the Dom Tower was undergoing restorations and was covered in scaffolding for my trip to Utrecht (one of the downfalls of travelling in winter) so I didn’t get to do this activity.

Resistance Monument in Cathedral Square, Utrecht

After descending the tower, exit into Domplein (Cathedral Square). This spot was where a grand cathedral once connected the tower to the church before it was destroyed in a freak storm (rumoured to be a tornado) in 1674. Brickwork on the ground marks the original position of the cathedral building’s walls.

The square also features a few interesting monuments such as the Resistance Monument, which is a statue of a woman with a torch representing the Dutch resistance during WWII. Nearby, there’s a plaque dedicated to the homosexuals who were persecuted (and often given the death sentence) during the Utrecht sodomy trials in the 1700s.

Pandhof Garden at the Dom Church in Utrecht

The inside of the Domkerk (Dom Church/St Martin’s Cathedral) is worth a look. Unfortunately many of the stained glass windows were destroyed during the war, and you can still see some of the damage from bombings on the interior concrete pillars. Sometimes there are performances happening inside – we were lucky enough to have some musicians playing orchestral music while we were there.

Next to the church is the Pandhof Garden which was one of my favourite stops in Utrecht. This secret garden is actually a former monastery garden surrounded by gothic architecture that dates all the way back to the 12th century. Walking through it feels like you’ve entered a magical scene straight out of Harry Potter!

Roman fortress border in the streets of Utrecht

As you walk out to the street behind Pandhof Garden, you might notice a marker on the ground that follows the street. This shows where a walled fortress once stood around the Dom Tower back in Utrecht’s early days – an impressive 2000 years ago – as part of the Roman Empire.

Down the street is the Paushuize (Papal House). This grand residence was built by Pope Adrianus VI before he became pope in 1522. Born in Utrecht, he is the only Dutchman ever to have been elected as pope. A modern statue of him also stands outside the house, which is now rented out for private events.

Nieuwegracht (New Canal), Utrecht

From the Papal House, walk along the Nieuwegracht (New Canal) for a few blocks. This gorgeous canal was built in 1393 and features a design that can only be found in Utrecht – a second layer of walkway that runs just above the water level.

You might notice the doors that lead mysteriously into the walls underneath the street. These were cellars used for storage back in the days when Utrecht was full of shipping merchants, but most of them are now privately owned or managed by the city.

Oudegracht (Old Canal), Utrecht

Now cross over through the pretty streets to access the Oudegracht (Old Canal). Utrecht’s main canal has similar features to the New Canal except that it’s a little wider and some of the lower level cellars have been converted into shops or restaurants.

The Weesbrug bridge that crosses the canal is actually the meeting point for the Utrecht secrets bicycle tour , so you can plan to arrive here for the tour departure time if you’ll be doing this activity.

On your walk back to the old town, stop in at Cacao for an amazing hot chocolate! You’ll only need to order the tiniest size as it’s so decadent. If you’d prefer a harder drink, head across the canal for a beer at KafĂ© BelgiĂ« which has a range of craft brews.

Pannenkoekenbakkerij De Muntkelder pancake bakery, Utrecht

If you’re sticking around for dinner, head to Pannenkoekenbakkerij De Muntkelder . The Dutch will eat pancakes with syrup for any meal of the day, which sounds totally weird, but the savoury mushroom, cheese and onion pancake that I had was actually very good! This pancake restaurant is also unique as it’s located in one of the old cellars by the canal, so it kind of feels like you’re eating a meal in a medieval basement.

Here in Utrecht a nun, Sister Bertken, was voluntary locked-up in a cell for 57 years. Another special woman from Utrecht was Anna Maria van Schurman, possibly Europe's first female student. Also the first non-Italian pope came from Utrecht. He dearly wanted to return to Utrecht, but life had other plans with him.

Special stories and funny facts alternate during a city walk through Utrecht, making it fun for everyone. You will see and experience Utrecht with completely different eyes. Discover the most beautiful places in Utrecht and book a surprising guided city walk soon!

Highlights from Utrecht

Book a city walk and discover the city center. A local guide will unveil Utrecht's history and show some fascinating details along the way.

You'll learn about the disaster that struck the Domchurch. It has the highest churchtower in the Netherlands, but something is missing. Along the way you will see the world famous Old Canal with its cozy terraces on the wharf. The story about the hundreds of medieval cellars is truly unique. Furthermore, you'll find out what the Winkel van Sinkel used to be and why beer became so important. Utrecht's city center is stunning. Courtyards and alleys

This tour goes through beautiful courtyards and alleys in the inner city of Utrecht. Between the canals there lies a hidden world, where time seems to have stood still. With beautiful stories, the guide will make the history of Utrecht come alive. In the past, Utrecht was home to 30 convents. How to get there

By train or bus.

From Utrecht Central Station it is a 15 minute walk to the Domsquare. I recommend walking as it often is just as fast as taking a bus.

Bus number 2 stops at the Domsquare. Also busstop Janskerkhof is close by and is attended to by many lines. Check the website 9292.nl for travel schedules and timetables.

Parking on the streets is possible but expensive and oftentimes it is hard to find a spot. Below you will find car parks close to the Domsquare. Sometimes reserving a spot beforehand is cheaper. You can also check out Parkbee for this.

Parkeergarage Springweg - A 5 minute walk to the Domsquare. Costs: 2 euro per 25 minutes / 36,- per day

Parkeergarage Hoog-Catharijne P1  - A 10 minute walk to the Domsquare. Costs: 0,50 cent per 9 minuten / 30,- per day

Park and Ride

The cheapest option is using the Park and Ride locations Westraven and Science Park. Parking costs 6 euro´s per day and includes a bus/tram-ticket for up to 5 persons. I couldn´t find propper updated English instructions on how to use the P+R´s. I suggest following the links below and use Google translate instead.

P+R Westraven is located south of Utrecht next to the A12 highway. Here you can take a tram that will take you to Utrecht Central Station in 12 minutes.

P+R Science Park is located east of Utrecht next to the A28 highway. Here you can take bus 28 (or tram) that will take you to the city centre in 15 minutes. I recommend getting of at Janskerkhof close to the Domsquare.

utrecht walking tour map

Hey, I’m Gerben and I would love to show you around in Utrecht!

Utrecht is a very beautiful place, it is one of the biggest cities in the Netherlands. Yet it is a lot quieter than Amsterdam. I was born in the east of the Netherlands, but I moved here because of my studies. I never regretted this decision; it is a wonderful city with a rich history. In Utrecht you will never be bored.

I hope you will join me in one of my tours around Utrecht, and maybe you will fall in love with this great city as well. In my opinion following a free walking tour is the best way to discover a city. Even as a local, you can learn a lot from the tours I give.

I’m Jeffrey, a US/UK expat who now calls Utrecht home after a lifetime of travel and storytelling.  I’m a teacher during the year but I’m also a writer and an artist with a special fascination with this medieval township.  My neighbors are my stories: I live near the Dom so my stories about colorful locals from days past help me weave a tapestry about the history of this fine city – so near and dear to my heart.  I’m a chatty sort, and I love getting to know my guests so I can put together the best tour possible for our time together.  Tourists will appreciate my energetic and theatrical presentation of these Utrecht legends, and I’m honored to be able to present them.

My name is Marjolein and I have been a tour guide in our lovely city for more than two years now! Rain or shine, I always have a good time pointing out our famous landmarks and sharing my knowledge of the city.

I am a Dutch high school history teacher so I love to talk about all the past stories, important events, and simple beauty Utrecht has to offer. There is such a variety of interesting tales to tell – nice ones, sad ones and exciting ones! It’s not unusual to see me under our big white umbrella, so I’m looking forward to seeing you on a Utrecht Free Walking Tour sometime soon!

Bart is perhaps our most versatile tour guide. He started his career in finance but quickly discovered this was not compatible with him having a personality. He has since been on stage in the biggest comedy clubs in The Netherlands and loves to mix education with a healthy dose of humor. He knows a lot about the history of Utrecht but also thinks a lot about the future of the city. He lives in town with his brother and teaches in the off-season. In his free time, he likes to play guitar, do yoga, and try to keep his 100+ houseplants alive. Rumor has it that he’s the lost great-grandson of Vincent van Gogh, so join him for a walk through beautiful Utrecht and see if the rumors are true!

utrecht walking tour map

Hi, I’m Tim van der Heiden, and I’ve been a Dutch guide for more than 3 years now. I moved to Utrecht more than 10 years ago to study history at the university and fell in love with the city. Seeing the Dom Tower as I walk out of my house never fails to bring a smile to my face!  After my studies, I became a high school history teacher as well as a tour guide for the Free Walking Tours! Sharing my knowledge and telling the stories of this city is my passion, and I love seeing the smiles on my guests’ faces as we walk around this ancient town.  Aside from my love for Utrecht and history, I’m an avid lacrosse player and even part of the national team!

froukje

Dear all, My name is Froukje. Froukje is probably the most Dutch name you will hear during your stay here in the Netherlands! Originally my name comes from the North, but I was raised in a town in between Amsterdam and Utrecht. I fell in love with Utrecht and I decided Utrecht was going to be the city, where I wanted to study law. I have now been living here for a few years and I am still very enthusiastic about all the nice courts and squares that Utrecht has to offer. I would love to tell you stories about some of the events that took place in Utrecht and some crazy things that happened here.

After spending the full afternoon with me, hopefully, you will start loving Utrecht as much as I do!

utrecht walking tour map

My name is Ruud and I have lived in Utrecht for more than 50 years in 8 different neighborhoods, so I can tell many stories about this vibrant city.  I was born and raised in Amsterdam until I was sixteen so when I compare both cities now I can tell you – Come to Utrecht!

As a career, I worked as a stage director in many theatres all around Utrecht, but I can tell you the city itself is the nicest stage! When you walk with me I can show you historical buildings and famous landmarks, but also nice hidden places too.  I will also tell you highlights from the history of here and stories of the common people, not just the leaders. Let’s have a fine walk together today in the Dom City!

Tour Lisa 3 best

Hi, my name is Lisa and I would love to take you on a walk through my favorite city, Utrecht!

Originally I am not from Utrecht but I grew up in the south of the country.  During my studies at Utrecht University, I fell in love with the vibrant city, her beautiful canals, the Dom Tower, the people, and the history, and decided to stay. I’ve been a proud inhabitant of this beautiful city for over ten years now.  I have traveled the world a lot, and joined the free walking tours in a lot of different cities – I was even a guide myself at times!  Now I’m a guide in my own city and for the last two years as a guide for Free Walking Tours Utrecht.  I can’t wait to share all my favorite stories and places with you!

utrecht walking tour map

When I studied I choose Utrecht as my student town. Utrecht is a great city for students it has lots of bars, festivals and other options for students. I have since moved out of Utrecht but I am still in love with the city.

I became a tour guide in Utrecht some years ago and I am one of the first guides of Free Walking Tour in Utrecht. I really love to show people around the Dom City because of the unique stories that this town has.

Also, a local guide is a great way to discover the many hidden gems this town has. A lot of people make a one-day trip to Utrecht which I think is not enough time, there is a way to much to discover. Utrecht is a very Dutch town, far more than Amsterdam at this point.

We may contact you in the rare case of last minute changes (eg. extreme weather or city protests). Your phone number will not be given to third parties.

Things to do in Utrecht in One Day (or More)

Europe , The Netherlands

Utrecht is a chill college town in the central Netherlands with more than 2000 years of history. The iconic Dom Tower and the Gothic Cathedral of St. Martin in Domplein square trace back to medieval times.

Dubbed Europe’s most beautiful canal city, Utrecht boasts a gorgeous tree-lined canal. On weeknights, locals chill at the beer houses along the canal. The Dutch sail their boat there on weekends with beer on their hands.

The fourth-largest city in the country is well connected to other Dutch cities via train and canal. Inevitably, Utrecht makes an excellent day trip from Amsterdam , Rotterdam , or The Hague . But if you can spare extra days, Utrecht is also an ideal base to take day trips from.

What to Do in Utrecht in One Day

One day in Utrecht, Netherlands - Dom Tower cityview| #Utrecht #Netherlands #NetherlandsTravel #TravelEurope

#1. Dom Tower (Domtoren)

The Dom Tower (Domtoren) is Utrecht’s must-visit attraction. The 112-meter-high medieval church tower is the tallest in the Netherlands.

Take the tour of an iconic cultural landmark in the city center. (It is only accessible by a guided tour.) You would have to climb up 465 steps, but the reward is the best panoramic view of Utrecht . And you also receive a postcard as your keepsake for your accomplishment. But the tower is also wheelchair accessible by the lift.

One day in Utrecht, Netherlands - Dom Tower Indoors | #Utrecht #Netherlands #NetherlandsTravel #TravelEurope

Inside the tower, you will also learn about the history and see its famous bells (at 40 meters) and 17th-century carillon (at 80 meters). Every Saturday around 11 am, a live bell play by a professional player takes place. (Otherwise, it is recorded and automated.)

Tickets are sold at the tourist information center. Be sure to sign up for the tour. All bags must be stored in the locker inside the information center. (Don’t forget to take the ticket out of your bag.) And be there on time for the tour.

Optional: take DOMunder tour (€12.50) if interested in seeing the underground Utrecht from 2000 years ago.

One day in Utrecht, Netherlands - Utrecht Canals | #Utrecht #Netherlands #NetherlandsTravel #TravelEurope

#4. Utrecht Canal

Are you canaled out yet? I mean, where can you not find canals in the Netherlands, right? However, since Utrecht has won the title “Europe’s most beautiful canal city,” taking time to appreciate its stunning canal is a must.

I noticed that Utrecht canals have what-I-would-call a basement area. Basically, you go down from the street to reach the terrace of restaurants and beer houses along the water. It is nice to grab a terrace seat here and watch the Dutch chill on their boat in the water.

A few places of my recommendations:

  • Beers & Barrels [ Google Map ]: A relaxed bar & grill with a great selection of beers and food.
  • Stadskasteel Oudaen [ Google Map ]: Built in 1276 for the Zoudenbalch family, one of the first stone buildings in Utrecht had turned into a restaurant. It has its own brewery.

Its rich history, elaborate decorations and stunning garden make it a popular day-trip destination from Utrecht.

#9. Teahouse Rhijnauwen: Dutch Pancakes

How would you like to have the best Dutch pancakes in the Netherlands? Let me present Teahouse Rhijnauwen to you!

Teahouse Rhijnauwen is a super cute indoor/outdoor pancake restaurant. You would have to venture out of Utrecht a tiny bit. But I think this teahouse is a fantastic picnic site for a lazy Sunday afternoon . Be ready to spend about half a day here because this is the slow-travel type place you would not want to rush.

#10.  Gouda Cheese Market

The Netherlands is one of the world’s leading dairy producers. And what is it most famous for? Its Cheese!

Utrecht is close to (not one but) two of the famous cheese markets: Gouda and Woerden. So do yourself a favor and visit at least one of these cheese markets.

Gouda, of course, is the birthplace of Gouda cheese . For that reason, it is perhaps the most famous Dutch cheese market. As if that’s not a good enough reason to visit Gouda, this town is also the hometown of Dutch stroopwafel. (Read more about things to do in Gouda here>> )

From April through August, every Thursday is the traditional cheese market . But please be aware that the Gouda cheese market is a re-enactment show for tourists. If you are interested in seeing the real deal – where farmers and merchants historically and even today make deals in the traditional way, head over to Woerden (see #11 below).

Location : City Center [ Open Google Map ] Hours : Thursdays from April through August, 10 am – 12:30 pm

#11.  Woerden Cheese Market

Woerden is the last-standing “real” farmer’s cheese market in the Netherlands . Unlike the re-enactment shows in Gouda or Alkmaar, merchants and farmers traditionally make commercial deals; and the cheese prices are bounded at this cheese market.

Both Woerden and Gouda are so close to Utrecht. If you’d like, you can visit both of them in a day. (As you suspect, that’s what I did!)

I shared about my first Dutch cheese market experience and what you can expect here >>

Blegisch Biercafe Olivier Utrecht

Belgisch Biercafe Olivier Utrecht is a restaurant and beer bar you must visit in Utrecht. The place itself is like an attraction because the original architecture as an underground church is kept creating a unique ambiance.

Can you find a napping cat in the photo above? While we were there for a few hours, he did not budge at all with all the noise! (And no one dared to push him away to sit at that table.)

Their selection of beers is AMAZING! We had to study their Rolodex beer menu. After trying out a bunch, my favorite was Gouden Carolus Tripel. We would recommend sea bass, but not the beef steak (Texas steaks have raised my bar way too high).

De Oaseboom

You can always find a budget-friendly late-night snack place in a college town. In Utrecht, De Oaseboom is that place. We got hungry at night and had an incredible slice of pizza (the type you crave when drunk) and shawarma here. By the way, it used to be a slightly grungy pizzeria a while back; but it looks like they have remodeled and rebranded.

A Guide to Utrecht, The Netherlands: What to See, Eat, and Do

L ively university vibes, frisky nightlife, iconic canals . . . Utrecht offers much of what nearby Amsterdam does, without the crowds and fuss. (It also has delights all its own. Devotees of Miffy, the cartoon rabbit immortalized by Dutch artist Dick Bruna, are cheering the recent renovation and expansion of the city's beloved Miffy Museum .) In addition to the classic sites-the Rietveld Schröder House , the Centraal Museum , the Van Schijndel House -the following belong on the traveler's itinerary.

What to do in Utrecht

Utrecht's most visible landmark, this 14th-century Gothic bell tower rises 369 elevator-free feet above the city, an athletic attraction as well as a historic one. The heart and bowels of two Holy Roman emperors are allegedly interred here. This is old Utrecht distilled.

De Stijl Bike Tour

In honor of De Stijl's 100th anniversary in 2017, the Utrecht tourism board, in collaboration with the Centraal Museum, designed a bicycle route to traverse the movement's pivotal sites in the province: the old mansion where Gerrit Rietveld first designed furniture, Robert van't Hoff's modernist Villa Henny, a full-scale replica of Piet Mondrian's studio, and more. Running 26 miles between Utrecht and Amersfoort, the gentle ride doubles as an idyllic tour of the surrounding region.

As Utrecht's western edge grew, this urban park came along. Opened in 2013, MĂĄximapark covers 741 gorgeous acres that are crisscrossed with bike paths, canals, gardens, marshes, art installations, and farms, making it a lovely place for a picnic and an all-day visit.

The painting didn't stop after De Stijl. Contemporary Utrecht is jammed with inventive street art. Take a 1.5- to 2.5-hour walking tour with local operator Greetings from Utrecht to see the literary, the romantic, the notable, and the 3D, or download a map from the company for a self-guided jaunt around town.

Where to eat in Utrecht

Location: Heuveloord 25A 3523 CK | Find on Google Maps

On the top two floors of a 1907 brick water tower, fine vistas collide with fine dining. Watertoren 's offers dishes such as haddock with sea buckthorn berry, and beetroot with furikake and elderflower, which diners can enjoy while gazing at panoramic views from the 10th-floor terrace or while watching the busy chefs from the tables on the ninth floor that encircle the open kitchen, effectively creating a high-end cooking show.

Location: Korte Jansstraat 23, 3512 GM Find on Google Maps

Originally a flower shop in a grand 1904 art nouveau building, Ruby Rose is a delightfully garish shrine to all things floral. The decor is a vibrant setting for the next-level charcuterie and salads (don't miss the burrata). The café is on the Korte Jansstraat, near the sea of tulips and roses that is the Saturday Bloemenmarkt.

How to get to Utrecht? – The best ways to get to Utrecht

Utrecht is very conveniently located, right in the middle of the Netherlands. This has made Utrecht Central Station into both the largest and the busiest train station in the Netherlands. This makes the city very easy to get to, especially by train. Even more convenient is that Utrecht Central Station is right next to the city center. Going by train also ensures that you won’t have to spend a lot of time finding a (very expensive) parking spot near the city center. Besides, the fact that getting to Utrecht by train takes less than 30-minutes from Amsterdam Central Station, making it a very compelling alternative to staying in Amsterdam, especially during peak season, or when you’re on a budget.

Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA Trainstation

Getting to Utrecht from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport

Trying to get to Utrecht straight from the airport? No problem! The train stops right inside the airport, so it’s incredibly convenient. The train that departs inside Amsterdam Schiphol Airport goes straight to Utrecht and takes about 30 minutes as well. It’s also great if you have a layover in Amsterdam! I would only suggest visiting Utrecht if you have, at the very minimum, a 6-hour layover in Amsterdam. However, an 8-hour layover in Amsterdam is what I would suggest if you want to really make it worth your while, of course: the longer the better!

  • Tip: Check out this article about public transport in the Netherlands if you’re not familiar with the system.

If you happen to be one of the few visitors to the Netherlands that arrives at Eindhoven Airport, getting to Utrecht will take you Utrecht about 75 minutes. I wouldn’t recommend visiting Utrecht during a layover from Eindhoven, but there are many other places you can visit if you have an 8-hour layover.

Sign with directions to public transport at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam

Getting to Utrecht from Germany or Belgium

If you’re arriving in the Netherlands by car or by train from Germany or Belgium, you won’t need your passport: the borders are ‘open’, so there’s no border control. However, you will still need a passport when boarding a flight to the Netherlands from another European country.

Train schedules & tickets to Utrecht

You can find train schedules, ticket prices, as well as almost all other information related to traveling through the Netherlands by train on the website of the Dutch Railways: NS.nl . Train tickets can also be booked on the website, as well as at any train station. You do not have to book tickets in advance, and seating is not pre-arranged: you can just buy a ticket at a ticketing machine or at the service desk at any train station and hop on the train to your destination.

Best things to do in Utrecht

Almost all items in this guide are within walking distance from the city center and Utrecht Central Station. The Rietveld Schöder House is the item in this guide that’s furthest away from Utrecht’s city center. I recommend going to every item on this list by foot – unless you aren’t able to do so.

Cruising the Oudegracht is one of the best things to do in Utrecht

1. Cruise on the Oudegracht

There are lots of options to choose from when it comes to getting on the canals in Utrecht. But it’s definitely a fantastic experience, especially since the Oudegracht has lower docks the so-called Werf . The canals of Utrecht, especially the Oudegracht, have been the beating heart of the city for centuries. The lower Werf docks are unique to Utrecht, and there are lots of unique buildings surrounding the Oudegracht. If you’re on a budget, I recommend exploring the Oudegracht the Dutch way – by renting a water cycle. There are also lots of places surrounding the Oudegracht that offer tours and boat rentals, which is fantastic if you have a bigger budget or if you’re traveling with a (large) group. Whatever your budget or group-size, cruising the Oudegracht is definitely one of the best things to do in Utrecht!

  • Water cycle: €9.50 per person.
  • Shared boat tour: €12,95 per person.
  • Small electric boat rental: €70 for up to 8 people.
  • Private boat tour: €150 – €200 for up to 12 people.
  • 10 AM – 6 PM (Final departure at 4:30 PM) for water cycling, check online for boat- rental and tour times.
  • Smaller electric boats will allow you to go anywhere (even where regular boats are not allowed, like the beautiful Nieuwegracht).
  • You can often find great discounts on the websites of the boat rental places.

2. Lunch or dinner at the Oudegracht

2.1 lunch at the oudegracht.

For a quick lunch or snack, Broodje Ben and Broodje Mario are both local hotspots as well. They are located within a 1-minute walk of each other, but you may find yourself in a (very) long line at Broodje Ben ‘s food truck during lunchtime. Both are recommended, however, make sure to try the classic at Broodje Mario if you like Mediterranean food, such as delicious bread topped with cheese, salami, and chorizo.

2.2 Dinner at the Oudegracht

Once it’s time for a break and you’ve done some sightseeing in Utrecht, I highly recommend having lunch, dinner, or at the very least a coffee down at one of the lower werf-terraces next to the canal. There are many restaurants and bars to chose from, some of the best ones are listed below. I recommend Beers & Barrels and Gauchos for dinner and/or drinks in the evening. Whatever your budget: don’t skip out on enjoying an amazing meal right next to the beautiful canals. It’s definitely one of the best things to in Utrecht and something you just have to experience!

Gauchos is, in my opinion, the best place to eat all-you-can-eat spareribs in Utrecht. They also have a terrace down on the werf right next to the Oudegracht, which is amazing and highly recommended if the weather allows for sitting outside.

Beers & Barrels is great if you plan on visiting with a large group. You can pay for beer by the barrel as well as order from a huge selection of craft beers on the menu – did I mention the food is fantastic? Be warned though, if you’ve decided to head to Beers & Barrels, be sure to make a reservation ahead of time: it’s incredibly popular for drinks and dinner, even during weekdays. Both restaurants are located inside the beautiful authentic werf-cellars that have been used as storage by merchants for centuries.

  • Lunch at Broodje Ben or Broodje Mario: €3 – €7 per person.
  • Dinner at Gauchos or Beers & Barrels: €20 – €35 per person.
  • Lunch: 11:00 – 16:00 (11 AM – 4 PM)
  • Dinner: 17:00 – 23:00 (5 PM – 11 PM)
  • Tipping is not required. The wait staff all have a decent minimum wage in the Netherlands, however, tipping at a sit-down restaurant is appreciated if you’ve enjoyed the food and service. Depending on the quality of food and service, a tip of €2 – €5 is normal for regular restaurants.

3. Take a free tour of Utrecht

You read that right: Free tour! Locals give free tours of the city in Utrecht. This a great way to learn about the city’s history and do some great sightseeing in a short period of time. The free walking tours in Utrecht are usually in English and the tour guides are passionate locals who volunteer to show you the city. You’ll get to see and experience parts of the city that remain undiscovered by most visitors! These tours are a great, non-commercial way to explore the city and offer an authentic way to explore Utrecht. There a different types of tours, some even offer a special Medieval tour and a World War II tour on Saturday and Sunday. There’s no need to register for them, just show up at the Dom-tower (or another location if specified!) and make sure you’re on time. The free tours usually take anywhere between 1 – 3 hours.

  • Medieval tour
  • World War II tour
  • Free (general tours of Utrecht)

An extraordinary feat of medieval construction. The Dom-tower is a 112 meter (367 ft) high gothic church tower. It’s the highest church tower of the Netherlands and has been for centuries, with the start of its construction dating back to 1254. To this day, the Dom Tower is the highest building in Utrecht and the Cathedral that used to be connected to the Dom once made it the largest church in the entire kingdom of the Netherlands, until part of it collapsed during a tornado in 1674. You can walk underneath the tower, and climb the Dom-tower for a small fee, and there’s even a ‘Dom Under’-experience .

  • Climbing the Dom: €10 / €7,50 for students & minors
  • Dom Under: €11 / €8,50 for students & minors
  • Most people climb the Dom-tower around noon, however, if you’re visiting during winter and going to climb the Dom-tower, make sure you plan your tour as late as possible. The sun sets around 17:00 (5 PM) and if you take the 16:00 (4 PM) tour, you’ll be right on time for a spectacular sunset view overlooking Utrecht!

4.1 Pandhof

The Pandhof is a little hidden gem right next to the Cathedral. Most visitors won’t know about it, and it’s very difficult to find if you don’t know it’s there! It’s a beautiful little garden though, so make sure to stop by.

  • If the weather is nice, the Pandhof is an amazing spot for lunch or a picknick.

The Pandhof, Utrecht

5. Janskerkhof: Flower market & Anne Frank

One of the many beautiful squares in Utrecht, Janskerkhof features the 10th-century Janskerk. The square is surrounded by historic buildings. If you find yourself greeted by the smell of beer on the square, you are likely standing in close proximity to the PhRM – the residence of the Utrechtsch Studenten Corps, Utrecht’s oldest student society.

5.1 Flower market

There is a super authentic Bloemenmarkt (Flower market) on Janskerkhof every Saturday. The Bloemenmarkt here is frequented by locals and can get very busy. If you’re looking to buy flowers in the Netherlands, the offering at this Bloemenmarkt is of much higher quality and offers fantastic value-for-money compared to the Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam or Lisse ( Only 1% of the tulip bulbs sold at the Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam will actually blossom! ). However, note that the Bloemenmarkt in Utrecht is only there on Saturday, between 8:00 – 17:00 (8 AM – 5 PM). If you’re really looking to get a great deal, go later on in the day, however, you may find that a lot of flowers are sold out around closing time.

5.2 Statue of Anne Frank

The statue of Anne Frank is right in front of the door to the Janskerk – the large, similarly named church on the square. The statue was placed in remembrance of all victims of the Holocaust and was gifted to the city by the city’s youth in 1959. They funded the statue by selling old newspapers and scrap metal. If you’d like to know more about Anne Frank, I highly recommend visiting the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. I wrote about the Anne Frank House in another article, you can read it over here .

6. Museums in Utrecht

If you’re looking for art by Dutch masters, you definitely shouldn’t skip the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh in Amsterdam , however, Utrecht has some super unique museums which are definitely worth a visit! Some popular museums in Utrecht include the Spoorwegmuseum , the Miffy museum, and the Rietveld Schröderhuis .

6.1 Spoorwegmuseum

The Spoorwegmuseum is the Dutch national railway museum. If you’re fond of trains, this museum is fantastic and definitely one of the top things to do in Utrecht. The Spoorwegmuseum features over 120 trains and trams. Visiting the Spoorwegmuseum is especially highly recommended if you are traveling with small children.

  • Adults: €17,50 / Children under 12: Free
  • 10:00 – 17:00 (10 AM – 5 PM)
  • Closed on Monday

Train similar to the ones at the Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht

6.2 Centraal Museum

The Centraal Museum is the main museum in Utrecht and boasts an impressive and exceptionally broad collection. The collection ranges from contemporary fashion designs by Viktor & Rolf to paintings by Wtewael.

  • Adults: €14
  • Teenagers: €6
  • Children under 13: Free
  • 11:00 – 17:00 (11 AM – 5 PM)

6.3 Rietveld Schröderhuis

Inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000, the Rietveld Schröder House is one of Utrecht’s most famous architectural- and design works. It was designed by Gerrit Rietveld for Ms. Schröder in 1923-1924 and has been inhabited by Ms. Schröder until she passed in 1985.

  • Adults: €17
  • Students & Teenagers: €9
  • Children under 13: €3
  • 11:00 – 17:00 (10 AM – 5 PM)
  • Due to the limited amount of people that may tour the building at any given time, you may have to book your tickets at least 3 weeks in advance.
  • A tour with a tour guide is included in the price.
  • There are two other buildings designed by Rietveld within less than a 1-minute walk from the Rietveld Schröder House. These are definitely worth checking out as well.

7. Utrecht’s Nightlife

Utrecht has a booming nightlife, whether you’re looking to go to a (wine)bar or cinema, Utrecht will have many options to choose from and there’s no doubt that there’s one that suits you. On this list, you’ll find some of the best clubs and bars in Utrecht, as well as other evening activities.

7.1 TivoliVredenburg

The largest music complex in Utrecht, TivoliVredenburg has five(!) unique concert halls, a cafĂ©, and a restaurant. Each concert hall in TivoliVredenburg hosts its own musical genre, and with concerts being hosted every night, there’s bound to be a concert that you’ll love. Check out the calendar .

  • You may get lucky by checking the latest artist announcements , but if you find a sold-out concert on the calendar that you’d love to go to, check out TicketSwap . Prices are limited to a maximum markup of 10% from the original ticket price, so you know you’re always paying a fair price. I’ve used the service many times and highly recommend it.
  • TivoliVredenburg sells high-quality reusable earplugs for just €3. They’re fantastic – protect your hearing.

Performance in TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht

7.2 Bars in Utrecht

Because of the large number of bars in Utrecht, this list has been divided into two categories: casual and party. Casual bars are often specialized in either beer or wine. They have a laidback vibe, with plenty of seating and some offer live music. Party bars include clubs and bars that are similar to clubs, with DJs, limited seating, and louder music. Most party bars are open until the sun almost rises, while most casual bars are open until around 2 AM. All the clubs and bars listed are in the city center, so you can walk to the bar, and give walking back your best shot

7.2.1 Party

I would not recommend heading to a party bar before midnight. Most party bars open around 11:00 (11 PM), but you’ll find yourself in an almost empty bar if you go before 01:00 (1 AM). You don’t need to make a reservation, with some nights at Basis being the notable exception.

If you’re into House & Techno, Basis is the place to be. It’s an underground club (literally) with industrial vibes, right next to the Oudegracht in a Werf-basement. Tickets are available on their website and at the door.

  • Friday & Saturday: 23:00 – 6:00 (11 PM – 6 AM)
  • Tickets are cheaper if you arrive before 23:30 (11:30 PM)
  • Renting a locker costs €3 (+ €2 deposit). Fits about three coats.
  • Earplugs available for €4.

CafĂ© by day, bar by night. Hofman is more of a party bar with house music on most nights, but it also hosts comedy nights every Wednesday and live-music on Thursday night. If you prefer a more casual ‘bar-vibe’, definitely go to Hofman instead of Basis.

  • Entrance fee on ‘special’ nights
  • Friday & Saturday: 23:00 (11 PM)
  • Wednesday: 21:00 (9 PM)
  • Thursday: varies (usually between 19:00 – 21:00 (7 – 9 PM))

Woolloomooloo

Known simply as the ‘Woo’ (pronounced as ‘ weau ‘ or ‘wow’ ; not ‘ woo! ‘), this is absolutely where you should go if you like cheap drinks and lots of students. The Woo has three halls and is the largest student-run club in the Netherlands. A glass of Heineken or Dutch liquor is just €1,40 – by far the cheapest alcohol in Utrecht! But there’s a catch: because it’s a student bar, you’ll need a student card to enter.

  • Free. Students with ID & student-ID only.
  • Open from 23:00 (11 PM), every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
  • You won’t be able to get in without a student-ID & an official ID (passport, driver’s license, ID card).

7.2.2 Casual

  • Cava – Great tapas
  • ‘t Taphuys – 64 Wines & 68 beers, both on self-service tap.
  • Beers & Barrels – Recommended for dinner too
  • ‘t Taphuys – 68 Beers & 64 wines both on self-service tap. Recommended for trying lots of different beers.

Storefront in Utrecht by Night

Bonus: Winter in Utrecht

Most items in this guide aren’t specifically aimed at wintertime, though most activities are great during winter as well. If you happen to visit in December or early January, definitely check out the indoor ice rink (with “Biergarten”) on the Neude -square, and don’t forget to check out the amazing restaurants next to the Oudegracht. When visiting Utrecht during wintertime, I highly recommend you check out my winter guide to the Netherlands , which also includes Amsterdam!

John - United States

With its spiderweb of canals and cafe-lined streets, Utrecht has to be one of the most beautiful cities in the Netherlands. And touring it with Lucas was like walking around with a friend! His presentation wasn’t heavily scripted, like so many other tour guides we passed by. Lucas encouraged questions and discussion and was as interested in our own life experiences as we were about his city. He even carried a tub of stroopwaffle cookies to hand out when we answered questions correctly. We were lucky to have only three people on our tour, so we got our fill! The pace was relaxed and covered sites we certainly would not have discovered on our own. Highly recommended!

Lucas, our guide, was very friendly. With very curious stops, which without him would go completely unnoticed. It was so worth it!

Lucas was very nice and friendly. Gave us a very nice tour of the city including all important highlights while also giving us suggestions for less touristic bars cafes and restaurants to continue our trip!

The 10 best hikes in and near Utrecht to bask in Dutch nature

Fresh air, come at us đŸŒČ

Heather Slevin

We love Utrecht for its quaint streets, cute cafe nooks, and bustling atmosphere — but sometimes, you really need to escape the city.

Luckily, there are stacks of scenic hikes and walks in Utrecht. We’re not talking a jaunt over the Matterhorn’s level of hiking — but beautiful stretches over fields, wanders through the forests, or ambling alongside rivers and sloten ; that’s what Utrecht does best.

Of course, it’s not always easy to find the perfect hike that ticks all the boxes of distance, duration, and damn-good views.

That’s why we’ve compiled some of the best hikes and walks in Utrecht to escape the city.

1. Eendenkooienpad, IJsselstein

Breathe in the fresh air of the Dutch countryside on this gentle, 17-kilometre romp. The Eendenkooienpad (Duck Decoy Trail) is a path that stretches through farms, along the river Hollandse IJssel, and traverses ancient towns.

READ MORE | Hiking in the Netherlands: 4 myths, busted

Round off your trip with a stop by the beautiful city of IJsselstein and make up for those burned calories with a hot chocolate or homemade ice cream.

đŸš¶â€â™‚ïž Walk distance: 17 kilometres ⏰ Duration: Four hours 📍 Starting point: Jachthaven Marnemoende, Noord IJsseldijk 107, IJsselstein đŸ—ș Marked Route: Follow the red clogs

2. Kaapse Bossen, Doorn

Good things come to those who wait — and while Doorn is a little further out of the city centre, it’s well worth the trip.

The Kaapse Bossen is home to some of the most beautiful nature in Utrecht.

Meander through the middle of Utrecht’s Heuvelrug and venture through sloping forest paths.

This nine-kilometre hike will take you through the highlights of the Kaapse Bossen, including an estate gatehouse and a watchtower with an incredible view over the Heuvelrug.

TIP: Partway along the path is a thick fir tree that blew over in the early 1990s. Side branches have kept the trunk off the ground, so this tree is perfect for climbing!

đŸš¶â€â™‚ïž Walk distance: Nine kilometres ⏰ Duration: Two hours 📍 Starting point:  Parkeerplaats Groene Entree Kaapse Bossen đŸ—ș Marked Route: Follow the dark blue route indicators

3. De Amerongse Berg, Utrechtse Heuvelrug

Boswachterij De Amerongse Berg in Utrecht is one of the oldest forests in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug .

This municipality is home to an epic forest of great proportions; wander amongst the ancient oak and birch trees, and take in the wonder that is nature. 🌳

READ MORE | The 8 greatest forests in the Netherlands for a nature escape

Utrechtse Heuvelrug was created in the last ice age and, as a result, is home to narrow valleys.

But, destroyed and left barren due to greedy cattle, the forest was replanted with birch, oak, and beech trees to create a beautiful mixed forest.

đŸš¶â€â™‚ïž Walk distance: Eight kilometres ⏰ Duration: Two hours 📍 Starting point: Veenseweg 28 3958 ET Amerongen đŸ—ș Marked Route: Follow the sandy path

4. Scrambling on the Heuvelrug (Scharrelen op de Heuvelrug)

Coniferous trees, pine cones, oaks, and beeches line the landscape along the Heuvelrug , this epic hiking trail in Utrecht.

You’ll find this trail set amongst the deciduous forest in the village of Lage Vuursche. Perhaps while you’re there, pay a visit to Princess Beatrix, who lives in Drakensteyn Castle nearby.

But maybe swap out those muddy hiking boots for something a bit more glam before you do. 👾

đŸš¶â€â™‚ïž Walk distance: 13 kilometres ⏰ Duration: Three-and-a-half hours 📍 Starting point: 3739 KA Hollandsche Rading đŸ—ș Marked Route: Follow the blue arrows

5. Monument route Amelisweerd & Rhijnauwen

The Amelisweerd and Rhijnauwen trail leads you along a mapped-out route of 17 wonderful Dutch monuments spanning across the centuries.

Wander through and wonder at an 18th-century home or check out an old Dutch fort, the largest fortification made along the Dutch Waterline .

If you want to extend the length of the trail, you can pad out your hike by visiting the various museums along the way.

The Old Amelisweerd Museum combines art and preserved household items from the 18th century and is well worth a visit.

You can download the map for the route online, however all the information about the monuments is in Dutch — so make sure you’ve got your phone if you’re an English speaker!

đŸš¶â€â™‚ïž Walk distance: Five kilometres ⏰ Duration: One hour 📍 Starting point: Koningslaan 9, 3981 HD Bunnik đŸ—ș Marked Route: Follow the map

6. Austerlitz forest walk

Located in the middle of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, Austerlitz is the perfect spot for a calming forest hike.

Along the route, you’ll pass the White House (no, not the American one! 🏚), an 1820’s hunting lodge.

Or, you can climb the Pyramid of Austerlitz , a camp that once hosted over 20,000 French soldiers 200 years ago.

đŸš¶â€â™‚ïž Walk distance: Nine kilometres ⏰ Duration: Two hours 📍 Starting point: Oude Postweg 144, 3711 AL Austerlitz đŸ—ș Marked Route: Follow the map

7. Around Ruigenhoek

The Rondje Ruigenhoek is an eight-kilometre trek that leads you past dozens of group shelters in this polder landscape.

The shelters are built along the New Dutch Waterline, an 85-kilometre stretch of defences and forts in the Netherlands .

READ MORE | A guide to 11 beautiful national parks in the Netherlands

There is also a beautiful park along the trail, the Noorderpark Ruigenhoek, and a fort on an uninhabited island with wonderful trees and monuments.

đŸš¶â€â™‚ïž Walk distance: Eight kilometres ⏰ Duration: Two hours 📍 Starting point: Gageldijk 1, 3602 AG Maarssen đŸ—ș Marked Route: Follow the orange shields

8. De Stulp circular walk (Lage Vuursche)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Anaël Tromp (@anaeltromp)

The De Stulp circular walk is again located near the Royal Palace — as well as lots of pannenkoeken restaurants.

Along this trail, you’ll hike through the Dutch forest and observe the shifting sands.

As lots of cows live in the area, the grass is kept short, but the further you get along the trail, the more the area will emerge into woodland with tall, coniferous trees. đŸŒČ

đŸš¶â€â™‚ïž Walk distance: Eight kilometres ⏰ Duration: Two hours 📍 Starting point: Slotlaan 8, 3749 AA Lage Vuursche đŸ—ș Marked Route: Follow the route map

9. Beerschoten walking route

Dogs are welcome along the Beerschoten walking route , so pack your pooch into the boot and get ready to walk a hefty 11-kilometre hike! đŸš¶â€â™€ïž

The route connects three Dutch nature reserves in Utrecht: Beerschoten, Houdringe, and Panbos.

Wander through the huge meadows and even past the sand dunes along the way, as you’ll really be getting a view of all kinds of Dutch nature.

đŸš¶â€â™‚ïž Walk distance: 11 kilometres ⏰ Duration: Two-and-a-half hours 📍 Starting point: Slotlaan 8, 3749 AA Lage Vuursche đŸ—ș Marked Route: Follow the yellow poles

10. Around Palace Soestdijk

photo-of-palace-soestdijk-seen-on-a hike-in-utrecht

The name of this trail sort of gives it away! This walk Around Palace Soestdijk will lead you around the 17th-century palace, ideal for some historical views while you walk. 🏰

READ MORE | Wadlopen in 2022: your guide to mudflat walking in the Netherlands

Dogs are welcome as long as they’re on a leash. Parts of the hike are paved, and it is generally quite flat (like the rest of the Netherlands if we’re honest), so it makes for a scenic, relatively easy walk.

đŸš¶â€â™‚ïž Walk distance: 16 kilometres ⏰ Duration: Three hours and 20 minutes  📍 Starting point: Amsterdamsestraatweg, Baarn đŸ—ș Marked Route: Follow the route

Pack those bags, and make sure you’ve got plenty of water and snacks to keep you going on these trails in Utrecht. Now that you’ve seen these beautiful parks and woodlands, why not explore some more hiking trails across the Netherlands ?
