Topolobampo Sinaloa: Your Complete 2024 Visitor’s Guide

Topolobampo Sinaloa is a port town and coastal area that sits just 22km away from the city of Los Mochis in Northern Sinaloa. Los Mochis residents will often venture here, and the nearby beaches of Maviri, at weekends when they want to escape to the sea.

It isn’t the most beautiful beach town in Mexico, but it isn’t without its charm and it serves a purpose when people want to escape to the Gulf of California. As a tourist, visiting Topolobampo gives an interesting glimpse into local life, and a chance to experience an authentically Mexican beach town that has not been gentrified or changed by international tourism.

The town is the fourth-largest in the municipality of Ahome. It is possible to take ferries from here to La Paz in Baja California Sur.

In that sense, Topolobampo and the wider region of Northern Sinaloa make a great travel pairing with Baja California Sur, Los Cabos, and La Paz. (If you have a lot of time to dedicate to traveling around Mexico).

Things to do in Topolobampo Sinaloa in 2024

Visiting Topolobampo Sinaloa

Topolobampo was founded by an American Civil Engineer named Albert Kimsey Owen in the 19th century. He saw industrial potential in the region and worked on developing the port as a way to open up trade routes between Sinaloa and the world.

There are plenty of things to do in Topolobampo Sinaloa and the vicinity to warrant spending a day here. If you are already in Los Mochis, perhaps on your way to the El Chepe train, El Fuerte , and Chihuahua, it makes a nice change of pace and atmosphere from the gritty city.

Stroll along the Malecon

The Topolobampo bay

The main activity in Topolobampo is simply strolling along the seafront Malecon. In recent years, locals have gone to great efforts to beautify and improve the appearance of the houses and buildings in Topolobampo.

Today, many of the houses that cascade down the hills towards the sea have been painted in bold vivid colors. The result is something that looks almost like the Northern Mexican version of Italy’s Amalfi Coast. Or at least, it is a colorful town that resembles some of the mural art villages in South Korea. (The resemblance between Topolobampo and Busan’s Gamcheon cultural village is uncanny).

Along the waterfront, you will find an abundance of food trucks selling tacos, fruits, fresh oysters, and street food snacks. Look out for the crazy coconuts which are a local specialty.

Fresh coconuts are chopped and then prepared with all manner of weird and wonderful toppings. Cacauates (peanuts), chamoy (pickled fruit sauce), hot sauce, chili-flavored gummy candies, and tropical fruits are popular additions.

Oysters are sold by street vendors pushing small carts. You can buy 12 for 80 pesos. The traditional “Sinaloan” way to eat them is to douse them in hot sauce and eat them at the cart.

Beautiful murals depicting local indigenous groups, sealife, and symbols of Sinaloan culture have started emerging along the Malecon and the streets and alleyways that veer off from it.

Take a boat tour to see the famous dolphin “El Pechocho”

The Topolobampo bay

El Pechocho is the name of a famous dolphin that lives in the warm waters just across from Topolobampo. He has lived in a little cove called El Bichi for more than 30 years and has become something of a symbol of Northern Sinaloa.

(He is not in captivity, he just prefers it here!) Since Pechocho lives alone, and in a different manner from the other dolphins, marine biologists from across the world have come here to study him!

There are several running theories as to why he chose to live in isolation. One being, that he lived in this little cove with his mother and after she died, he refused to leave it.

Nobody is sure for certain, but the friendly mammal is always delighted to see tourists and can often be seen swimming and jumping alongside boats. You can take a boat tour from Topolobampo to visit El Pechocho (while maintaining a respectful distance).

The boats make several other interesting stops along their journey. From the sea, you have a perfect vantage point for taking photos of the houses of Topolobampo as they cascade down the hilltops.

A boat tour takes around 90 minutes and costs just 600 pesos (circa $30 USD). The price is per boat, not per person, and the little fishing boats can accommodate as many as 5-6 people.

Indulge in delicious Sinaloan delicacies

The state of Sinaloa, known as “the breadbasket” of Mexico is where 70% of Mexico’s farming and agricultural industries are based. So, everywhere you eat here, you will be treated to dishes prepared with fresh fruit and vegetables that have been sourced locally.

Since Topolobampo is a port town, it makes sense that many of the restaurants here specialize in seafood delicacies. They prepare dishes made with fresh fish caught by local fishermen earlier the same day.

Many establishments constantly modify their menus, preparing something special with whatever they were able to catch that day/week. Taqueria Don Gato (Pesquera de Topolobampo 35) is a local favorite that specializes in seafood tacos.

The dishes are inexpensive and the portions are huge. The piping hot tacos de camarón capeado and the quesadillas prepared with stewed marlin are not to be missed.

Nearby, Angel del Mar (Del Muelle, Topolobampo) is a seafood restaurant with excellent views across the water, particularly as the sun sets. Meanwhile, if you are interested in trying birria de borego, head to Birreria Don Chencho (Cajon. del Beso 81, Pesquera) a short walk away from the Malecon.

Birria is a Mexican stew made with lamb marinated in vinegar, dried chiles, garlic, and herbs, and spices before being cooked in a broth. It hails from the state of Jalisco, but it is very popular across Sinaloa and Northern Mexico

Take a picnic to El Maviri

topolobampo mexico tourism

Playa El Maviri is a golden sandy beach that sits 10km southwest of Topolobampo Sinaloa. It is actually located on an island in the Sea of Cortez and is connected to the Mexican mainland by a series of roads and bridges.

The pristine beach, backed by shimmering waters, is a nice place to spend a day by the coast. It is pretty quiet here during the week so you may find that you have entire stretches of coastline all to yourself.

On Friday nights and at weekends, people come here with packs of beers and picnics to hang out with their friends and family. There is always an abundance of street vendors here selling everything from Mexican drinks like agua frescas , to chopped coconuts, elotes, hamburgers, and hot dogs.

Restaurant-wise, there are about a dozen establishments that run along the unnamed roads that veer off from Carrt. al Maviri. Most specialize in seafood dishes.

Two that stand out are Nikostiones oyster bar restaurant and restaurant Miramar.

See the famous cave of bats

A short drive south from Topolobampo, just before you reach El Maviri, you will find a sprawling cave overlooking the water. This is known as “the cave of bats”. (Cueva de los Murciélagos in Spanish).

It is estimated that more than 5 million bats live inside the cave! If you happen to pass by in the evening, perhaps on your way back to Los Mochis, you will see millions of these bats pouring out of the cave and filling the night sky as they come out for dinner.

Where to Stay in Topolobampo Sinaloa

Sinaloa is still relatively new to international tourism. Most of the people that visit come here from Los Mochis for the day and then head back the same evening.

A couple of hotels operate in the area, but the selection is limited. Still, some reputable, safe hotels in Topolobampo that you may want to consider visiting during your trip are detailed below for your consideration.

Casa de la Aduana hotel boutique

The Casa de la Aduana hotel boutique is a new luxury property situated on the waterfront of Topolobampo bay. It boasts its own private section of beach, a spectacular pool overlooking the sea, and spacious, tastefully decorated rooms.

A delicious continental breakfast is included in the price, and all rooms come equipped with a flat-screen, wall-mounted tv, streaming services (like Netflix), air conditioning, and complimentary toiletries.

With prices starting from around $200 USD a night, Casa la Aduana is one of the more expensive accommodation options in the region. But you are paying for the view and location, so it is worth it if you are hoping to indulge.

Tortuga hostel

Tomolobampo’s Tortuga hostel is a great, budget-friendly choice in the port town. Rooms here start from just $30 USD per night for a double or twin room with a sea view.

Dormitory beds are also available for approximately $12 USD per night if you are traveling independently or hoping to meet other adventurers. This social property has a barbeque, a communal garden, a shared kitchen, and a sun terrace on site.

Getting to Topolobampo Sinaloa

It is easy to get from Los Mochis to Topolobampo. It takes approximately 30-40 minutes to drive the 22km distance and the route is pleasant.

Renting a car in Mexico can give you a lot more freedom and flexibility in your schedule. However, public transport in Northern Sinaloa is pretty good and makes getting around Los Mochis and its surroundings fairly easy and affordable.

Take the bus

Azules del Noroeste buses depart from Los Mochis for Topolobampo every 20 minutes between 6 am and 8 pm. (It runs on the same schedule in reverse from Topolobampo to Los Mochis too).

There are multiple bus stations in Los Mochis, so note that for the bus to Topolobampo, you need to head to the Terminal Azules del Noroeste station (Tenochtitlan s/n, Centro). A one-way ticket costs 23 pesos per person. (Just over $1 USD).

Take an Uber

Uber exists in Los Mochis and is a good way to get around. If you spend any amount of time in Mexico, you will note that most people prefer to use rideshare apps like Uber and Didi as ways to get around.

Not only are they cheaper, but in Mexico, they are actually considered safer than getting into a random street cab. There is more accountability that way.

If you want to get an uber from Los Mochis to Topolobampo, it should cost you no more than around 200-250 pesos each way. You should be able to find a car for the return journey but if not, you can always return by bus.

There are a few common sense precautions that you can take for your safety when using Uber in Los Mochis (and in Mexico generally). When you are connected with a driver, make sure that they have completed several journeys before and that they are not completely new to the platform.

You can also check their review rating. If they have completed thousands of journeys and have a rating of 4.5, you can feel assured that you are in good hands.

If they have only completed 8, they may be fine, but for your safety and peace of mind, you may want to cancel and find a new driver. As long as you cancel and search for a new driver quickly after your fare is accepted (i.e. the driver has not already set out on their way to you), Uber will not charge you.

If not, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Is Topolobampo safe to travel to?

Topolobampo can be a safe place to travel to so long as you take precautions and use the same common sense as you would elsewhere. People are often concerned about the safety of traveling to Sinaloa in general , particularly as many international government travel advisories warn against it.

The reality is that in Sinaloa, like Mexico in general, the safety situation can vary significantly from city to city. Los Mochis, Topolobampo, El Fuerte, and Mazatlan are relatively safe and offer interesting places for tourists to see.

(Indeed you are likely to be in this part of Mexico if you are setting off on the El Chepe train). Do not drive off into rural parts of Sinaloa, especially at night, and in the evenings stick to the areas near the Malecon.

It is helpful to monitor the situation in Sinaloa prior to your trip. Political issues and organized crime-related developments can affect the feasibility of traveling here. However, these are usually the exception, not the rule.

Introduction to Los Mochis & Topolobampo

Topolobampo and Los Mochis were both founded by Americans in 1893. A civil engineer by the name of Albert Kimsey Owen saw a lot of potential for a Pacific trading port where Topolobampo sits today. He and a few followers originally founded Topolobampo as a utopian socialist community.

Shortly thereafter, a businessman by the name of Benjamin F. Johnston, attracted by Owen’s visions for a port, found himself in what is now Los Mochis. He too saw a lot of potential in the region, but more specifically in sugarcane cultivation.

By the turn of the century, Johnston had built a sugar mill in Los Mochis and the city grew rapidly around it.

To this day, Los Mochis’ economy depends heavily on agriculture, though it has diversified a bit. In fact, the region is one of the top mango producers in all of Mexico.

Climate Around Los Mochis, Sinaloa

Los Mochis and Topolobampo sit at sea level and both have a semi-arid climate. The temperature is usually warm or hot year-round.

  • April – October: daytime highs usually range from 32 to 38°C (90 to 100°F), night-time lows from 15 – 25°C (59 – 77°F). The rainy season is from July through September and the cities have occasionally been hit by hurricanes.
  • November – March: daytime highs range from 26 to 30°C (79 to 86°F), while nightly lows are between 11 and 15°C (51 and 59°F).

The best time to go is in October as the landscape will be lush after the rain. However, as the weather is warm year-round, it’s easy to enjoy outdoor activities most of the year. It’s probably best to avoid July and August due to extreme temperatures and heavier rains.

Where are Los Mochis and Topolobampo?

Los Mochis Sinaloa - infographic

Los Mochis and Topolobampo are in the north-western region of the Mexican state of Sinaloa. The two towns are only about 25 km (15.5 mi) from each other, and Topolobampo is situated on the coast of the Gulf of California.

Los Mochis is the end of the line (or beginning) for El Chepe, so most visitors to the Copper Canyon will find themselves there at some point.

The map shows the major transportation hubs (mentioned below), as well as the major sites mentioned in the Things to do section

How to get to Topolobampo and Los Mochis, Sinaloa

Los Mochis is more accessible than most of the other towns along the Chepe route with the exception of Chihuahua. It can be reached by plane, boat, bus and of course, train.

Please be aware that there are planned changes to train fares and schedules as of January 10th, 2020 .

This site will be updated shortly after the new details are released.

How to get to Los Mochis, Sinaloa by Plane

Only a handful of airlines service Los Mochis airport (LMM) and only for domestic flights. To fly internationally from LMM, Aeroméxico will be your best bet but it will require a connection in Mexico City.

Calafia Airlines is a great option for hopping over to Baja California, or for getting back to Chihuahua. Volaris is another low-cost option with a couple of destinations from Los Mochis.

You can take an Uber or taxi to the airport or catch an Azules del Noroeste bus from their station ( see map above ). Buses depart for the airport 5 times per day.

How to get to Los Mochis, Sinaloa by Bus

There are two bus companies that can connect you to either Topolobampo or El Fuerte from Los Mochis. These companies are Azules del Noroeste (blue buses) and Transportes Norte de Sinaloa ( ANS , green and white buses).

Los Mochis to El Fuerte

Most travellers through the Copper Canyon actually prefer to take a bus between El Fuerte and Los Mochis as the schedule is more flexible and the cost is lower.

Azules del Noroeste buses depart for El Fuerte at least once per hour between 5 am and 8:15 pm. The ride is about 2 hours and costs 80 MXP per person. See the map above for the location.

ANS buses run about every 20 minutes from the ANS station ( see map above ). The cost is 60 MXP per person and the ride is about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

For details on how to get to Los Mochis from El Fuerte click here to see our El Fuerte page.

Los Mochis to Topolobampo

Azules del Noroeste buses head to Topolobampo every 20 minutes between 6 am and 8 pm. The 30-40 minute ride costs 23 MXP per person and departs from their station in Los Mochis ( see map above ). The reverse schedule is the same.

As the distance between these two towns is so small, taking a taxi or an Uber is very doable. It should cost somewhere between 170 and 250 MXP.

How to get to Los Mochis, Sinaloa, by Boat

Los Mochis doesn’t actually have a coastline but nearby Topolobampo does. Baja Ferries run between Topolobampo and La Paz, Baja California Sur, on a seasonally variable schedule. Check out their website for details and prices.

Things to do Around Los Mochis, Sinaloa

The city of Los Mochis may not offer a whole lot to travellers but Topolobampo is so close that it’s very easy to head over there for the day. Alternatively, you can stay a night or two in Topolobampo to take in all it has to offer.

Below is a list of the main attractions and things to do in Topolobampo and Los Mochis, Sinaloa.

Things to do in Topolobampo

The nearby town of Topolobampo is only 25 km (15.5 mi) from Los Mochis and is situated on the Gulf of California, or, better known locally, as the Sea of Cortez. It’s a small port town where the malecón (esplanade) is always filled with locals and their fishing rods. You can easily find a little stall or restaurant serving fresh seafood and there are a couple of tours to consider once you’re town.

The information below was given to me by a local tour boat owner. It should provide you with some ideas of what is available and rough cost estimates, but if you’re willing to negotiate I’m sure you can tailor your own tour and agree on a fair price. To book a tour , just head to the pier in Topolobampo and look like a tourist. The guides will find you.

Isla Farallón

This rocky little island is situated about 15 km (9 mi) off the coast of Topolobampo. It’s well known for its sea lion inhabitants, which are usually lounging on the rocks between October and April .

Isla de las Aves

Another little island that you can visit is the Isla de las Aves, or Island of the Birds. It’s home to many species of local and migratory birds. The best time to see this island is between mid-April and early August .

Around Topolobampo Bay

If you’d like to get a good look at the unique landscapes surrounding Topolobampo, you can book a boat tour around the bay. In addition to the natural landscapes, you’re likely to see different seabird species and maybe even dolphins.

El Pechocho

Pechocho is the name of a wild dolphin that tends to hang out in a nearby fishing port. He’s not captive but it’s likely that local fishermen have been feeding him for years and so he sticks around. In fact, he’s been known in the area for about 20 years.

You can book a boat tour to go see Pechocho, but as he is wild, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll see him. Either way, you can go for a swim while you’re out on the water. In some cases, El Pechocho has even come up to swimmers to interact with them.

Please Note: Feeding and interacting with wildlife is often not a good idea. It can be risky for yourself but also for the animals. If you do go to see Pechocho, try to encourage your guide or captain not to feed him, and to only interact with him on his terms (don’t chase behind him in the boat).

Maviri Beach

This beach is about 11 km (7 mi) from Topolobampo and 30 km (18.5 mi) from Los Mochis, so it’s easily accessed by either.

Maviri is situated on the Sea of Cortez and has large, sandy beaches, a little boardwalk, picnic areas, and a lot of seafood restaurants. The most famous local dish is called el pescado zarandeado and is a must for any seafood lover.

How to get to Maviri Beach from Topolobamp

You can either hire a taxi or catch a bus . A taxi should cost about 100 MXP one-way and you can arrange for the same driver to pick you up later.

Buses leave for Maviri roughly every hour starting around 9:40 am until the last bus, around 4:40 pm. Buses from Maviri back to Topolobampo start at 9:00 am and run hourly until about 5:00 pm. A one-way ticket should cost 15 MXP.

How to get to Maviri Beach from Los Mochis

You can hire an Uber or a taxi to get you to Maviri Beach from Los Mochis and it should cost somewhere between 200 and 250 MXP. If you don’t plan on staying in Topolobampo for the night, it’d be a good idea to arrange for the driver to pick you up later.

Jardín Botánico Benjamin Francis Johnston

If you’re short on time in Los Mochis but still want to get your nature-fill, head over to the Botanical Gardens. The gardens are located only a 15 min walk from the Azules del Noroeste bus station and offer a peaceful place to sit and admire nature.

The gardens have many local and exotic flora and some local animals too, including a butterfly pavilion. You can even bring some food and have yourself a little picnic. If you have extra time in Los Mochis, this is definitely a great place to spend it.

Museo Regional del Valle del Fuerte

If it’s history and heritage that you seek, then this little museum will make an excellent stop. You can learn more about the Sinaloan region and its history, and how Los Mochis got its start as a city. They also hold special exhibitions on some weekends.

Note that the museum is closed on Mondays and that the signage throughout the museum is in Spanish only.

Although most travellers to Los Mochis are only passing through on their way to the airport, the city does have a lot of options when it comes to accommodations. And seeing as Topolobampo really only has one option, sometimes it’s more preferable to stay in Los Mochis.

Here are a couple of options for different budgets:

Hotel Fenix

This hotel is simple but its location is perfect for anyone who will be using the Azules buses, as it’s just a couple of minutes walk from the station. It also has a great restaurant on-site, which is open late.

City Express Los Mochis

Situated right beside a supermarket, this is a great place to stay and stock up on snacks before heading out on El Chepe, or to Maviri Beach for the day.

High Budget

Fiesta Inn Los Mochis

This is a comfortable hotel with a restaurant, a gym and an outdoor pool. Even better, it’s only a 10-minute walk to the Botanical Gardens.

Hotels in Topolobampo

Topolobampo is a tiny little port town and accommodation options are therefore very limited. In fact, there’s really only one hotel in Topolobampo that can be booked online:

Hotel Marina

Hotel Marina is spacious and has the essentials, though the rooms could use some touch-ups. The location, however, is great and makes staying in Topolobampo very easy.

Additional Information for Los Mochis, Sinaloa

Below are some general tips from personal experience. If you have travelled in Mexico or Copper Canyon and have any other tips please feel free to leave a comment at the bottom of the page!

There are plenty of banks scattered throughout the city of Los Mochis including Scotiabank and HSBC.

If you’re travelling through Copper Canyon it’s advisable to take all the cash you’ll need with you as functioning ATMs can be very difficult to come by once you leave Los Mochis. That said, take the usual precautions when carrying large sums of cash and don’t visit an ATM after dark.

ATMs dispense primarily in 500-peso denominations and more often than not retailers don’t have change for these large bills. Hold on to as many small bills (20s, 50s, 100s, 200s) as you can, ideally getting change before you leave the city.

Don’t accept change in the form of ripped or torn bills as the next retailer won’t accept them from you. If you do find one in your wallet you can exchange it at a bank.

Many of the hotels throughout the Copper Canyon do not contain room safes and front desk staff will not assume responsibility for valuable items left with them. For this reason, I always travel with a LOCTOTE bag, which is a slash proof sack that can be secured to many fixtures. I find it brings me peace of mind when leaving my passport, camera, laptop or other valuables in my hotel room. It’s also great for the beach!

You can learn more about this super handy product by clicking here .

Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies provide coverage for travel to the states of Sinaloa and Chihuahua, Mexico. Make sure you purchase the right policy for your trip. Click here to learn more about travel insurance specifically for the Copper Canyon.

The free app Maps.me contains more detailed routes and amenities than Google maps. You can download it for apple or android , and then download the map of Mexico before you leave to visit the Copper Canyon. Even if you don’t have data while traveling in Mexico you’ll be able to navigate using the map and GPS on your phone.

Cellular Service

Service in the entire Copper Canyon is pretty weak, if non-existent, for many providers. Most hotels offer free wifi but if you’d like to have cell phone service I’d recommend picking up a telcel SIM card when you first arrive in Mexico as they have the best service throughout the canyons. Your phone will need to be unlocked in order to use it but the SIM includes plenty of data and unlimited calls to Canada, the US and Mexico and should only cost $200-250 MXP.

Hi, Kayla, Sorry it took me so long to get back to, but my memory isn’t as good as it used to be. I know there are no RV parks, in Topolobampo, but I was wondering if there is any place, where an RVer, could park for the night. There is a town north, a few miles, where one of the restaurants, would let you park on their property, if you bought your meals from them. That would be a super idea, as it can be a lot of trouble driving a large motorhome in the cities. But, anyway, I thank you for your answer, and I will be around the area, for sometime, as I have a house in Bacubirito, Sinaloa. Thanks, again, jim Peterson

Thanks so much for the RV tips, Peter!

Is there any RV overnight parking or RV parks, anywhere near Topolobampo?

That’s a great question but I, unfortunately, don’t have an answer for you. If you do find an RV park, please feel free to post here for future readers with RVs.

A tour through Topolobampo Sinaloa

It houses unmatched beauty and natural abundance; It is the home of the most endearing dolphin of the Sea of Cortez

Image result for A walk through Topolobampo

Los Mochis, Sinaloa  .- Praised sunsets, boats that cross the Sea of Cortez and the lifestyle of its inhabitants, mostly fishermen, who beat the sun every morning to go out in search of the sea are contemplated from the Topolobampo seawall. Treasures of the generous sea.

Tourism service providers enthusiastically await the arrival of visitors to offer their traditional boat tours.

“We invite you to enjoy Ohuira Bay, Topolobampo Bay, dolphin farm, sanctuary of sunken ships, Bird Island, Las Hamacas Beach, Las Copas Beach, Santa María Beach, Cerro Partido , the Topolobampo Lighthouse and the cove where a friendly dolphin called El Pechocho lives, ”said José Luis Jiménez Rojo, president of the Cerro Partido Tourist Services Cooperative, known in the port as Captain Chorrín.

Traditional walks

Onboard a boat you can see the vibrant infrastructure of the seawall, the Integral Port Administration (API), the Port Captaincy and the Naval Sector of Topolobampo.

Once you enter the bay, you can see impressive merchant ships and freighters ready to sail with corn, fertilizers and iron ore to different corners of the world.

“Here are the commercial docks that the API manages, in these warehouses and ships all the corn produced by Sinaloa, Sonora and Chihuahua is collected, embossed and sent to Asia and the Middle East.”

El Pechocho

And the most requested walk by locals and visitors continues to be the home of the most endearing dolphin of Topolobampo:  El Pechocho  , which lives in the low waters of the estuaries of El Bichi cove, a region where mangroves abound.

“We are in the cove of El Bichi or the horseshoe of the Cerro Partido, where the famous Pechocho lives, abbreviated by the children, because the adults called him Precious, but the children could not pronounce it and began to say Pechocho.”

According to the inhabitants themselves, the Pechocho was orphaned and grew up in complete solitude; He has been living in his mother’s remains for more than 30 years.

“The mother entered the bay, the cove of El Bichi and gave birth while it was impacting Hurricane Ismael; the mother died and her remains stayed in this place. It is said that where dolphin’s loved ones die, they must also die. “

The Chest can leave the cove, but he does not do it because his mother’s remains are there, he will remain here until he dies. ”

The tourism service providers ask for respect for the friendly dolphin that has won the affection of the people for their moving history and resistance to swimming in other waters, in other seas, in another home.

topolobampo mexico tourism

“He is 30 years old, the duration of the dolphins is 45 to 50 years, we have few years left to enjoy the famous Pechocho. I ask all who come to visit him to do so with care and respect, to give him his space and time for him to approach and let himself be touched. Do not follow it with boats or jet skis, they can hurt you, hit you and even kill you. Have consideration because with all you let yourself be loved in its moment ”.

The tour through the natural sanctuaries offers fascinating sightings of birds and dolphins.

In the bay of Ohuira, framed by the imposing Sierra de Navachiste, the black turtle is raised and is the favorite place to catch the shrimp. From inside you can see the Lázaro Cárdenas and Paredones fishing fields in the distance.

Topolobampo Mexico Cruise Port Guide

Topolobampo joins three other Mexican Riviera cruise ports that don’t have many visiting ships.

But less active ports that don’t have a massive number of visitors are sometimes appealing in a different way. They are more authentic and less commercialized. They aren’t filled with the usual souvenirs shops that sell mostly T-shirts, jewelry and electronics that visitors can buy in any other port.

There are a few downsides to these ports Mexican Riviera ports. English-speaking visitors will find that far fewer locals speak English. Major attractions and especially guided shore excursions aren’t as common.

Norwegian and Holland America are the only cruise lines that visit this small city of about 6,000 people in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. Cruise ships usually visit the port only on 10- and 12-night cruises to the Mexican Riviera.

Where is Topolobampo?

Topolobampo is on the west coast of Mexico and faces the Gulf of California (also known as the Sea of Cortez). It is 235 miles northwest of Mazatlán and about 200 miles southeast of Guaymas, another small cruise port in the Gulf of California.

Attractions and Shore Excursions

Topolobampo cruise port map.

The small size of the port and the small number of cruise ships that visit it means there are a limited number of shore excursions. The excursions are also more expensive on average than most Mexican Riviera ports.

One common option is the Copper Canyon train ride for hard-core travelers. The journey is six hours each way and the total trip is 17 hours. Passengers will take a 90-minute shuttle ride to the town of El Fuerte, where they board the Chihuahua Pacifico train.

From there, they travel through the Sierra Madre mountain range until reaching Copper Canyon. The train goes through tunnels, over bridges and climbs 7,200 feet above sea level. The trip includes breakfast, lunch, entertainment and time in Copper Canyon. Prices start at $550 per person.

Anyone who doesn’t want to spend that much money and time on a shore excursion has only a few other options, which mostly emphasis local culture.

A regional tour for $100+ will take cruise passengers to the prominent nearby city of Los Mochis. Tour highlights include a visit to a hacienda, authentic local cuisine, the regional museum, a 35-acre garden and a walk around Los Mochis.

A more expensive cultural tour starting at $199 includes the Mayo Indian village of Capomos, a 16th century adobe mission, a folklore dance, 18th-century Baroque-style cathedral and the town of El Fuerte, birthplace of Zorro.

Average daytime temperatures range from the low 80s Fahrenheit in the winter to the high 90s in the summer, according to the Mexican government meteorology service.

The city has a dry season that goes from October through June every year and a rainy season that lasts from July through September.

The dry season usually averages less than an inch of rain and only a few days with rain every month, according to historical data from the Mexican government’s meteorological service.

Average rainfall jumps to six inches in July, eight inches in August and five inches in September during the annual Pacific hurricane season.

The best time to visit Topolobampo on a cruise is December through April.

The economic importance of Topolobampo is dwarfed by its much larger neighboring city of Los Mochis, with a population of over 230,000 residents. Los Mochis is located in the “Valle del Fuerte,” a principal agricultural area of Mexico. The irrigated farms grow an abundance of crops, including sugar, cotton, rice, flowers and mangos.

The Topolobampo/Los Mochis region enjoys an arid, almost desert-like climate, with average summer temperatures in the high 80s F (about 33° C). Total annual rainfall is less than 2 inches.
