• 12 Of The Most Expensive Countries To Travel To

Norway is an extremely expensive country to visit.

  • One day visiting some of these countries can exceed $400.
  • Most expensive cup of coffee according to Hoppa’s 2020 study is in Abu Dhabi at $20.10
  • Most Expensive Big Mac according to Hoppa’s 2020 study is in Reykjavik at $15.38

There are places for budget backpacking travelers, then there are places like the ones on this list that are ready to burn a hole in your pocket and drain your bank account. We’re talking expensive hotel stays, exorbitant taxi rates, and pricey fine-dining to spoil your palate. If money is no object and you’re looking for a place to travel and spend serious amounts of cash, here are the countries that are mainstays in many most expensive lists based on studies like the ones published by Hoppa and others like the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report.

12. Switzerland

top ten most expensive countries to visit

With beautiful crystal clear lakes, sprawling flower fields, and snow-capped Alpine mountains, Switzerland should be in any traveler’s bucket list. This small landlocked country has plenty of nature to keep your mouth open in awe throughout your trip. It’s like living inside a painting only this one will bore a hole in your pocket.

CEO World Magazine calls it the most expensive country in the world to live in, and Zurich, it’s business hub is home to Bahnhoffstrausse, the most expensive shopping strip in the world. This avenue is home to brands like Rolex, Gucci, and Prada but what makes shopping here extra expensive is the high cost of living in the country.

Between airfares, hotel rates, and taxi fares, Switzerland tops many lists of expensive countries to visit. It ranks third in Hoppa’s 2020 List of Most Expensive Holiday Destinations in the World. In another list, Zurich ranked first in the most expensive fine dining options for tourists category and third in terms of expenses you’ll spend to travel around the country.

11. Cayman Islands

top ten most expensive countries to visit

This picturesque island located in the Caribbean is home to pristine white sand beaches, beautiful coral reserves, turquoise-green waters, and a promise of untouched peaceful seclusion. It’s a slice of paradise for many tourists looking for a reprieve from their busy lifestyles.

The place has become synonymous with luxurious-living, affluence, and millionaire lifestyle in recent years so much so that Hoppa has ranked it number one in the list of most expensive holiday destinations.

Frolicking in Cayman’s talcum-soft sands and coconut lined beaches come with a price and a hefty one at that. A holiday in this island will cost you around $590 a day. It has the most expensive hotel rooms in the world at a whopping $360 per person per night on average.

Many flock this Scandinavian country each year for its rich culture rooted in its Viking heritage, astonishing natural sceneries, and charming little lakeside towns. It is home to numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites , and to beautiful Norwegian flords or narrow lake drains. Oslo, its capital city is among the cleanest and safest in the world but it’s also notoriously expensive.

Norway is one of Northern Europe’s most expensive countries and is often on the list of most expensive places to visit. Be ready to spend around $258 per day in the capital and even more if you plan to buy goods as goods and services cost around 50% higher than those in the US.

It’s easy to see why Denmark is one of the most favorite places for short-term visits for tourists around the globe. They have a medieval Viking charm, lots of activities to do, and locals who are often always happy and welcoming. They are famous for their colorful architecture that lines their waterways, and a myriad of castles to visit. Many tourists enjoy the sights and sound of the capital city Copenhagen until they start noticing the dent the prices are making on their bank accounts.

Average spending in the city would be around $316 per day. And while it's relatively cheap to get there by plane, what will set you back are the prices of goods and services which are 40% more expensive than those in the US.

Tagged the Venice of the North because of its numerous canals that traverse parts of its cities, Sweden is one of the most beautiful Scandinavian countries to visit. Stockholm, its capital city is chic and charming with plenty of activities to do for tourists. You can walk around and admire the architecture or visit one of the many museums to learn about Viking culture.

While not as expensive as say New York or Switzerland, Sweden still commands quite a hefty price tag for tourists. On average one will have to spend around $316 per day to enjoy this Scandinavian country. While getting there won’t be as pricey (they have one of the cheapest airfares) staying there is a different story. The price of goods in Sweden is 30% more expensive than in the US.

7. Ice Land

top ten most expensive countries to visit

One of, if not the, most beautiful Nordic Countries, Iceland has been a destination of choice of those with a little more money to spend. Often called the land of ice and fire, Iceland boasts of picturesque mountains, glacial lagoons, geothermal lakes, rock and ice formations, and their famed-geysers.

But this much beauty comes with a price tag too! Ranked fifth in the world's most expensive destinations, Ice land can cost you $447 per day. While flights to Iceland can be among the cheapest, prices of other goods are 10% more expensive there than in the US.

Already in many people’s travel bucket lists the world over, Japan is home to exquisite foodie fares, unadulterated culture, and plenty of interesting sights and sounds to experience. While there are many scrumptious foods to fit your budget in their convenience stores, still, compared to other countries Japan is one of the most expensive places to visit as a tourist.

Tokyo, its capital city, is home to the famous Ginza street where glitzy flagship designer stores have set-up shop and are ready to max out your credit cards. A hotel in the city will cost you around $300 a night and that’s just for four-star accommodation. Taxi fare here is among the most expensive in the world. It ranks fourth in the 2020 world’s most expensive places to live in.

top ten most expensive countries to visit

With tourist hot spots like New York City and San Francisco, the US still tops many lists of expensive places to travel. Although toppled by the Cayman Islands in Hoppa’s list, New York, home to the world’s most expensive zip codes, still ranks fourth in terms of demanding a hefty price tag. New York is notoriously expensive and will set you back $464 per day followed closely by Las Vegas which will cost a tourist around $392 per day.

The city that never sleeps, still commands one of the priciest hotel price tags at around $250-$300 a night and that doesn’t even include the price for cab rides, dinners, and excursions.

4. United Arab Emirates

top ten most expensive countries to visit

Many cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi in recent years have become home to favorite travel destinations of those with a little more money to spend. Fueled by oil wealth, these places have become glamorous playgrounds for the rich. Its unique architecture, flashy shopping centers, and a man-made island shaped like a palm tree are a testament to their opulence and love of luxury. With exquisite excursions such as helicopter trips and yacht cruises, Dubai is one of the most expensive holiday destinations ranking second in Hoppa’s list.

A five-star hotel will cost you around $300 per night on average and the much-talked-about Royal Caribbean shore-cruise , the most expensive in the world, costs around $33,000, and no that’s not a typo.

top ten most expensive countries to visit

Go to England, they say, go to England to visit the queen, but what they didn’t tell you is how much it will cost you. A visit to one of Europe’s main business hub and center of everything hip and happening in Europe will cost you around $382 per day. Of course there are always more affordable options like sleeping at a friend’s house but on average a tourist would have to spend up to $217 for a night in a hotel in London. The UK also has one of the most expensive train ticket prices in Europe. England and other areas in the UK have a lot to offer and a wide array of places for all types of tourists but it’s one of the most expensive places to visit so be prepared and purchase tickets in advance.

top ten most expensive countries to visit

When it comes to European adventures, France still tops the list of places to visit to get an understanding of European culture. Famous for its rich culture, history, and culinary offerings, France is still one of the most interesting places for tourists the world over. The famous French city Paris is has earned the reputation as the city of romance, as well as opulence and luxury.

While there are now many budget options that will let you visit the city, on average a trip to France will still set you back quite more compared to other countries. A day in Paris will cost you around $352. Many historical palaces have been converted to hotels, one of which charges $26,000 a night .

1. Australia

top ten most expensive countries to visit

A favorite destination for nature and wildlife lovers as well as adventure seekers,  Australia is home to The Great Barrier Reef and the famed Sydney Opera House. Its for travelers who enjoy the great outdoors, sun sand and wild animals.

But the land down under has become not just an expensive place to live but also to visit. Aside from the exorbitant price of plane tickets to reach this seemingly isolated island South of the globe, goods and services are also around 10% more expensive than those in the US. On average a tourist in Sydney would have to shell out around $295 per day according to Hoppa’s study .

Where are the most expensive travel destinations in the world, and should you even consider vacationing in them?

Throughout my years of travel, I’ve aimed to visit the most affordable places in the world. It gets my budget to stretch further and I enjoy spending whatever I want when things don’t cost much.

But has that meant that I’m missing out on some unbeatable gems around the world, from Dubai to Zanzibar?

Would you scratch an expensive place from your list, or go all-in despite the costs, knowing that your travel experiences make you well-rounded and unique?

What follows is a list of the priciest countries to visit around the world, both from my own experience, and those of my friends and family members. We’re about to see if the most costly places to travel are worth it, aside from the price tag of spending time there!

top ten most expensive countries to visit

North America

North America is for sure a diverse place. Taking into account Canada , the US and Mexico with the rest of Central America, you can see that it’s a big continent, with some of the most expensive places on earth (NYC) to travel in!

Let’s see some of the most expensive places in all of North America, with my experience visiting them.

New York City, NY, USA

NYC is where I’m from, as well as where I spent a decade in my 20s and 30s living in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Living in NYC, with all its glitz, high prices and competitiveness, has conditioned me to not be so shocked by the prices in the rest of the most expensive travel destinations on earth. However, NYC’s prices are definitely a shock to visitors from other parts of the US, and from abroad!

top ten most expensive countries to visit

Why it’s expensive

I think New York City is expensive because it can get away with it. It’s the biggest (and best) major city in the United States, and no other city measures up. The influx of wealth, big business, finance, banking and celebrities have made NYC, in the past 10 years, an unbelievably expensive place to spend time in.

Is a trip to New York City worth it?

Of course a trip to NYC is worth it! I would recommend that anyone who has the means and the time should travel in NYC. The dense urban jungle of Manhattan, as well as the unbelievable mix of cultures all over, and gorgeous sites like Central Park, along with all the shopping, dining, entertainment and scenic views make NYC the BEST expensive city to visit!

If you want to live it up in NYC with an all-out trip, you can enjoy the sticker shock of things like a helicopter ride over Manhattan, staying at five-star hotels and meals out at top-rated restaurants. It’s not hard to spend money in NYC. ;-)

How to make a trip to NYC affordable

I wrote a guide for how to live in NYC on a budget , and a lot of the tips can be applied to a vacation or visit there. Before you go, see my list of what to know before visiting NYC , which will comment on costs.

top ten most expensive countries to visit

San Francisco, CA, USA

San Francisco is a coastal city in California known for the Golden Gate Bridge, Silicon Valley and the tech industry, cool breezy weather, great food and interesting spots like Lombard Street and Haight-Ashbury.

San Francisco was at one point, the most expensive city in the US (before NYC took its spot). SF is expensive because the cost of living matches the salaries of those who live there, and it exists within its own bubble. The times I’ve gone to SF have luckily been for business (when I wasn’t payin’!), but I’ve been there on my own too, and even though I’m used to the cost of everything in NYC, San Francisco has shocking prices like a package of strawberries for $8.

top ten most expensive countries to visit

Is a trip to San Francisco worth it?

I think a trip to SF is worth it every once a while. Where else will you see gorgeous neighborhoods like Nob Hill, just a stone’s throw from cultural spots like Japantown? San Francisco truly does have an incredible food scene, as well as being the place where lots of new types of technologies get debuted (just look at self-driving cars!).

Is there a way to travel in San Francisco on a budget?

Yes, and I’ve done it. Instead of taking Uber or Lyft, I try to walk everywhere in San Francisco, or take the Bart. Instead of eating at top-rated restaurants, I try to eat at hole-in-the-wall joints like in Chinatown. In my 20s, I would also stay with friends, even if it was on the couch, and buy my own groceries at Safeway so that I could make some of my own meals.

If I were to go to San Francisco now, I would embrace a lot of things like museums, culture and more of the natural areas like the beaches within the city.

top ten most expensive countries to visit

Banff National Park, Canada

As one of the coolest (and most expensive destinations for travel) in Canada, Banff National Park is gorgeous. Really, that is how I would describe it to anyone. I went to Banff National Park as well as Jasper National Park with my family several years ago and got to see the fantastic turquoise lakes, pristine snow-capped mountains, icy glaciers and pretty sunsets. When you arrive in Banff, you’ll see that meals, hotels and tours are all costly.

Banff is recently the most expensive place in Canada to travel . This comes from a few factors: first, there has been increasing demand for travel to national parks in the last several years and Banff has grown in popularity because of social media. Next, Banff itself is located a few hours outside of Calgary and is somewhat isolated. Lastly, Banff (the town) is not a giant place, so there are only so many hotels and accommodations. The cost of hotels ranks alongside the cost of hotels in major European cities.

top ten most expensive countries to visit

Is a trip to Banff National Park worth it?

I think a trip to Banff is worth it once in your life when your wallet and savings account is feeling full. Places like Lake Louise and Peyto Lake (which looks like a dog’s profile) are, dare I say, outrageously beautiful (just don’t get all the other tourists in your photo). A trip to Banff is worth it if you want to be stunned by nature.

Is there a cheaper way to visit Banff?

I have a few tips for visiting Banff. If you’re young, try getting a bed or a room at any of Banff’s several youth hostels. Next, you can try visiting in shoulder season, in between the long days and great weather of summer and before ski season. Lastly, try booking early for your car rental.

top ten most expensive countries to visit

Vancouver, Canada

Charming Vancouver is the biggest city in Canada’s west, and it reminds me a bit of Seattle. If you’ve been to eastern Canada, consider that Vancouver is quite different. Much of the city’s history relates to its location as a gateway to Asia, and this is probably my favorite aspect of Vancouver, because as far as dining goes, there is a TON of great Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese food!

top ten most expensive countries to visit

There are a few reasons that contribute to the high cost of living (and travel) in Vancouver: home prices and real estate (thanks to some foreign buyers) have inflated and gotten higher, driving up the cost of other things, and the city also has a strong economy. Things look good for Vancouver, and when we started looking at hotels for our summer trip, I got a little nervous.

Is a trip to Vancouver worth it?

I thought being able to see and experience Vancouver was well worth it, even though it rained basically the whole time! I could tell that it is a beautiful and peaceful city, and I enjoyed the walkability. I think the trip is worth it because you can see nature with a short drive or public transit ride from the city center. We did the Grouse Hike with a group of friends and saw bears at the top of the mountain (they were in an enclosure, so that visitors can see them). I didn’t expect that all, and it felt very Canadian!

Is there a cheaper way to visit Vancouver?

When Dan and I went to Vancouver, we were really lucky in that we had a whole set of airline points and miles saved up from during COVID, and we blew them all on our round-trip flights and our hotel. In fact, our points didn’t cover the cost of an expensive hotel, so we stayed at a budget hotel (which was very nice, although we had a shared, not private, bathroom!) in a pretty solid location near Gastown. I would recommend saving up your miles to visit Vancouver on the cheap, if you can! Of course, you can visit my list of ways to visit Vancouver on a budget .

top ten most expensive countries to visit

Middle East

While countries like Egypt, Turkey and Lebanon are known for being cheap, not all of the Middle East is inexpensive. These two Middle Eastern travel destinations might burn a hole in your pocket, so save up!

I love traveling in Israel, and having been there four times, it somehow keeps getting … more expensive? Gosh, I wish Israel wasn’t so expensive so I could go there all the time and eat like a king, but alas, a few contributing factors have made Israel expensive for travel.

Some ratings have placed Tel Aviv as the most expensive city in the world. A few things make Israel expensive. First, for Americans, the Israeli Shekel (ILS) keeps getting stronger against the dollar, although it’s weakening sometimes. The first time I went to Israel, I could get 4.25 Shekels for my USD, and when I went in 2016 and 2018, it was a bunch less. Dan and I felt pretty slammed the most recent time we visited Israel, with prices similar to those we’d expect in Manhattan (in Tel Aviv).

Israel got expensive due to demand. Tourists come from all over the world (Europe, Asia, the Americas) to see Israel, and the country is not all that big. There are new hotels in more parts of the country all the time, but for the most part, supply in accommodation is pretty set.

Maker:S,Date:2017-9-10,Ver:6,Lens:Kan03,Act:Lar02,E-Y

Is a trip to Israel worth it?

In one word: yes. In a few more words: yes, yes, yes. Traveling in Israel is incredible whether you go for a faith-based trip, or for the annual Pride festival in Tel Aviv, or if you want to soak up the winter sun on the beach or hang out in the Dead Sea.

My best moments of traveling in Israel are visiting the Dome of the Rock , seeing a sunset at Caesaria, skipping out to the beach in Tel Aviv with friends and wandering through Jerusalem and the Mahane Yehuda Shuk.

I hope everyone gets a chance to visit Israel in their lives!

top ten most expensive countries to visit

Is there a cheaper way to visit Israel?

Not all aspects of an Israeli vacation have to be expensive. You can stay in less central areas of major cities, try to eat street food, take mass transit and do free activities. As for accommodation, we recommend Abraham Hostels and the Savoy Hotel , a mid-range type of stay.

For a while, it felt like everyone was going to Dubai. I saw photos of the Burj Khalifa, the casinos and the shopping malls all over social media. How is Dubai still all the rage, and so expensive at the same time?

Pretty simply, Dubai is a luxury destination. As Dubai became more known as a millionaire’s playground, it seems like the personality keeps ballooning and more luxury things rise out of the desert sands there. Also, alcohol is very expensive because it has to come from a licensed place. The cost of living in Dubai is high, but if you come from a major city like London or NYC, you may not be quite as shocked as a visitor who comes from a smaller city.

Is a trip to Dubai worth it?

I think we could agree that Dubai is simply like nowhere else. The glitz, shine and new-ness of Dubai make it a unique city that awes most visitors. It’s also a city in which to experience Muslim culture, visit some famous mosques and even go sand-boarding in a desert.

Can you go to Dubai cheaply?

Not every trip to Dubai has to be expensive, and there are a few ways to take a trip there on a shoestring budget. Check out this blog for a list of how to save money in Dubai .

South America

Most travelers head to South America for a backpacking trip on the cheap. I certainly did, with trips to Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. But what about the places in South America that are some of the most expensive destinations?

Patagonia, we should note, is a gorgeous natural mountain region split between Argentina and Chile. Argentina gets a much larger area of the Patagonia region in terms of land area. Within Patagonia, you’ll find travel hotspots like Torres del Paine National Park, Bariloche, Los Glaciares National Park and El Chalten. While traveling in Argentina is typically cheaper than the Chilean side, neither country’s Patagonia is cheap for travelers.

top ten most expensive countries to visit

Why is Patagonia so expensive? It’s mostly due to demand, and the fact that most of the people who go to this gigantic land area are tourists and hikers. Tourism is increasing all over Patagonia, half due to social media popularity and half due to supply of things like hotels and lodges. Dan ran a half marathon in Patagonia, which goes to show how larger-scale events like this one are drawing large numbers of adventurers from far away, all at the same time.

Is there a way to travel to Patagonia affordably? One tip is to choose the Argentine side over the Chilean side (sorry, Chile) and another one is to budget your routes and drives so that you can save money on gas with your car rental.

top ten most expensive countries to visit

The Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands is one of the more remote locations in this list of popular “expensive” destinations. What’s interesting is how stark the difference in travel is, between the Galapagos and mainland Ecuador, where I’ve traveled.

When I went to mainland Ecuador for nine days, I think I got asked, Are you also going to the Galapagos? I detailed that this would require yet another flight and probably some guided tour options, which I didn’t have the budget for at the time.

That’s the thing about the Galapagos: this incredible set of islands set to the west of Ecuador and the South American Mainland is typically visited with a tour package (although you could do the trip on your own, with a la carte pieces put together). With flights from Quito, and an all-in package that will set up your accommodation, excursions and way to see the unique wildlife in their habitats, you’ll probably be looking at a minimum of $1000 and up to $6000.

The reason for the high cost of travel in the Galapagos is due to sustainability, tourism logistics and cruises.

It’s worth it though: where else in the world can you see the Blue-Footed Booby, giant tortoises and penguins, all in the same island chain in the Pacific Ocean? This is why the Galapagos remains one of the most popular, albeit pricy, places to travel in South America.

Not everywhere in Europe is expensive to travel in. Some destinations, though, really take the cake. If you’ve saved your Euros for a trip to these expensive destinations in Europe, you still may be stunned to see the price of travel in these costly Eurotrip locales.

Iceland is usually the #1 most expensive travel destination that friends of mine have in mind when I say, Where’s the most expensive place you’ve traveled? Most would say Iceland.

Dan went to Iceland in our first year of dating and because he was trying to go along with a shoestring budget, he made sandwiches by going to a few supermarkets, stayed at a hostel or basic B&Bs and rented a small car for his drive around the Ring Road. You can see the details at Dan’s guide to Iceland on a budget .

top ten most expensive countries to visit

Not everyone has the patience for budget travel in Iceland, and most travelers to Iceland are shocked at the prices, yet they go into the trip knowing what they’re in for. My friend Danielle says, “You could quote me that a side salad in Iceland is $30! It’s crazy how expensive veggies are because everything is imported.”

And that’s the reasoning! Iceland is expensive first because it’s in Scandinavia, which is a region with an outstandingly high cost of living, and second, Iceland is an island . Everything that is not Icelandic has to come imported from somewhere else, by a plane or a boat.

Is it worth it though? Most would say yes: a trip to Iceland is unforgettable. Just look at Dan’s photos of this pristine nature, from the geysers and mountains to the volcanoes and sea coast. Iceland is like nowhere else on Earth, and if you want to see it for yourself, it’ll come at a high price (money-wise).

top ten most expensive countries to visit

Switzerland is known as the most expensive country in Europe to live in. Even for folks coming from NYC and London, Switzerland prices will be surprising. It’s hard to find a hotel in Switzerland for less than $150 a night, and even meals out at fast food will run you $10-15.

You can blame the high standard of living that makes Switzerland expensive. Wages and salaries are high, so everything is priced accordingly. Travelers coming from lower-cost-of-living areas and countries might be astounded.

Is traveling to Switzerland worth it? You can be the judge. If you’re dying to see the Alps, and picturesque cities like Zurich, a trip to Switzerland will be one for the books.

Norway is where my eyes really light up if I see my friend’s photos of Trolltunga, one of the most photographed places in Norway. As a huge and long country that stretches all the way to the Arctic, Norway is a really special place!

Is it cheap though? Far from it. Norway is also one of the most expensive places in Europe, where you’ll have a nice time if you’re ready for the strike to your travel budget. While hotels in a place like Oslo aren’t shockingly costly, it seems to be the food that really does people in.

A meal at an “inexpensive” restaurant will likely cost you $15-20, as will a sandwich (if you see this list here at Numbeo.com ). A beer in a bar will also cost you between $8-10. Many of the high prices in Norway reflect the cost of labor, which pays relatively well, because of those Scandinavian standards.

My cousin Emmy says, “My number one experience from my time in Norway was that everything was wildly expensive. I remember getting like a 6-inch subway sandwich because it was like the only non-grocery store thing I could afford and it being equivalent to like, 25 bucks.”

Is a trip to Norway worth it? I think Norway is an incredible destination, both because of Norwegian culture and the unbelievable natural scenes you’ll find at the fjords and near the Arctic, like Lofoten, where my friend Kelly went and really enjoyed it. Kelly says that Norway is “hands-down one of the most beautiful countries I’ve ever been to. We went for the nature and spent a lot of our time hiking and driving around, so even though things were expensive most of our activities were free.”

Is there a way to offset the high costs? Kelly says, “We also grocery shopped and did meal prep since we were staying in remote areas without a lot of restaurants. A friend suggested bringing snacks (granola bars, trail snacks, etc.) from the US, which was super helpful!”

Denmark is the happiest country on earth, and also one of the most incredibly expensive. Why is it so expensive for travelers? The country has high salaries and high taxes, which both contribute to a high cost of living (and a very high standard of living). With everything in Denmark being “high,” you can bet that travelers pay the price.

To get your finances ready for a trip to Denmark, be prepared to shell out for travel expenses like food (note that hotels aren’t terribly expensive, and will run you MUCH less than NYC, on average). A budget dinner will cost up to $30 per person and fast food could be as much as $20.

Is it worth it though, is the question. Most will say yes: Denmark is an attractive place to visit because of eye-catching places like Copenhagen and Skagen. If you need to try to save money, try budget restaurants, walking instead of taking transport and staying in accommodation toward the outskirts of a city or town.

There’s a hack, from my friend Emma , who says, “Denmark is the best if you love design and baked goods. I could eat every meal at a bakery or casual spot and have a VERY good time.” So there’s that!

I love Asia because so much of it is cheap! Having been to 15 countries in Asia, I have a good handle on the inexpensive ones, as well as the expensive ones . See my top expensive Asian vacation ideas below.

One thing I would recommend not to do is to go from a really cheap country to a really expensive one like Singapore. After spending two years in mainland China, I backpacked across China and then went to Singapore to visit a friend.

My mind was absolutely blown to shreds with the price of what everything cost in Singapore. Even ten years ago when I went, my friend took me to bars and clubs where a $25 (in US Dollars) cover fee to get in got us one drink, and entry. My friend lived in Geylang, and from the central parts of the city back to his place, a taxi cost me $40. A beer in the 7Eleven was $7! I just really could not believe Singapore.

If there’s a way to “do Singapore on the cheap,” it would be staying in a B&B or hotel in a neighborhood outside the city center, eating street food (which is the best in the world, in Singapore) and walking a lot. I certainly had fun at the bars and clubs, but the sticker shock put me in a bit of a budget hole at the time because we did it every night!

top ten most expensive countries to visit

Japan is one of my favorite countries. Having been there twice, to Tokyo, Osaka and Narita-Shi, and having had different experiences, my main takeaways are that Japan is always worth the trip no matter what it costs. This being said, Japan is not cheap. I’ve tried to travel with a super cheap budget in Japan, and it was limiting.

A joke among my friends and I was that if we went to Japan (at the time, the Yen to the Dollar was NOT in our favor), we’d be eating sushi and hot meals from Family Mart (which is a convenience store). Family Mart does have great food, though, considering that it’s like a 7Eleven. My friend Emma noted, and I quote, “The hard boiled eggs there are literally perfect.”

Hotels and accommodation in Japan will seem expensive because you’re not getting much space. This especially rings true in cities. Emma reminded me that in Tokyo, your hotel room or Airbnb will be very small, but efficient, and there’s so much to explore anyway. You’ll hardly spend time there.

I say going to Japan is worth it, despite it being a very expensive place to travel, because Japanese people are amazing, and Japan is generally amazing.

I think what surprises most travelers is that Africa, a continent that goes into our news and media as developing countries with less wealth than the West, is surprisingly expensive for travel. My friend Daniel Herszberg , who has been to every country in the world, said that some of the most expensive places for him have been Sub-Saharan Africa, where the cost of hotels is “jacked up” because of diplomats.

In more well-traveled parts of Africa, the cost of travel is still high, although not extreme, like for Daniel’s purposes. Let’s see why.

top ten most expensive countries to visit

Zanzibar is a photo-worthy (I’ll cut to the chase! Ha) island off the coast of Tanzania, known for white sands and blue water beaches to rest your eyes on. It’s not cheap though. Zanzibar is, out of the more “well-traveled” destinations in Africa, one of the most expensive. That’s because it’s an island.

Hotels are where a lot of the expense in Zanzibar comes from. Many are resorts and are priced at $200-300. Day trips are also expensive.

African Safaris (various countries)

I went on a safari in South Africa, and this was the bulk of the money I spent during my entire trip. I recall it was around $400 and that was a lot at the time. Going on a safari is a quintessential travel bucket list item for many globetrotters, and are marketed as a “must” if you’re headed to Africa.

My friend Danielle, who went to the region recently, said that the catch in terms of being pricy is that there aren’t backpacker or budget options really for Serengeti (Tanzania) or Masai Mara (Kenya) for hotels. In order to see the animals, you have to go on a tour.

For Nairobi (Kenya), according to Danielle, you could probably find cheap places to stay, but if you want to do a safari, “It’s really tough if you’re on a budget.”

top ten most expensive countries to visit

And finally, the last continent: Antarctica. The world’s least-visited continent is now accessible for the modern traveler, and the only way to do it is … to take a cruise.

It’s not that Antarctica is actually expensive; rather, it’s that the way to get there and experience it safely (and there aren’t any alternatives) is with a large group on any number of cruises and tour packages.

It’s common knowledge now that going to Antarctica can’t be done cheaply, quickly or unsafely, as it is far away, and isolated. Cruise tours from either Chile or Argentina will run a traveler $5000 to $15,000 depending on the type of vessel, length of trip and tier of luxury.

When it comes to travel, many of us dreams of visiting exotic locales and experiencing the best that the world has to offer. However, not all travel destinations are created equal. Some destinations are simply more expensive than others due to various factors.

In this blog post, we'll look at the most expensive travel destinations in the world. We'll explore the factors contributing to their high cost and provide tips on saving money on your trip.

So without further ado, let’s get started.

Monaco

Average Cost of Stay: $2258

Monaco, a tiny state on the French Riviera, is well-known for its lavish facilities. Monaco is geared toward the rich and famous, as evidenced by its glittering casinos, yacht-filled harbors, and expensive malls.

Why is a trip to Monaco so costly? It's a world of unprecedented luxury, where everything from lodging to cuisine to entertainment is beyond comparison. Luxurious five-star resorts provide breathtaking vistas of the blue ocean and unparalleled elegance and service.

Foodies are lured to restaurants with Michelin stars by the promise of exquisite dishes that look as good as they taste. And when the sun goes down, Monaco's nightlife comes to life with a beguiling selection of glitzy clubs and high-stakes gambling dens.

2. Switzerland

Panoramic view of historic Zurich city center with famous Fraumunster and Grossmunster Churches and river Limmat at Lake Zurich on a sunny day with clouds in summer, Canton of Zurich, Switzerland

Average Cost of Stay: $2065

Switzerland is home to breathtaking scenery and unrivaled luxury. The picturesque landscapes of Switzerland are enough to enchant any visitor. The country is dotted with snow-capped mountains, clear lakes, and quaint towns.

Skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and mountain biking are just a few of the many outdoor pursuits that can be enjoyed in this Alpine paradise.

Luxury hotels in well-known Swiss cities and other major tourist locations are expensive. Switzerland's effective transportation network comes with a cost, which can be felt when traveling throughout the country. Skiing at a world-famous resort or indulging in some of Switzerland's finest chocolate can be costly too.

3. The French Riviera

The French Riveria

Average Cost Of Stay: $1,919

The French Riviera, or Côte d'Azur, has long been synonymous with sophistication and refinement. Lavish accommodations in glamorous resorts offer stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.

This beautiful coastline, also known as the Côte d'Azur, has long been a popular destination for celebrities and jet-setters worldwide.

What makes the French Riviera such an expensive vacation spot? It's a world where five-star hotels, gourmet restaurants, and invitation-only events rule supremacy.

The Mediterranean is visible from the rooms of the luxurious hotels, and the cuisine of the Michelin-starred restaurants will tempt your taste buds. The French Riviera is known for its high-end casinos and exclusive beach clubs, perfect for individuals who like to live it up.

4. Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo

Average Cost Of Stay: $1,779

Tokyo is a city where modern innovations and long-held customs coexist without conflict. This bustling city features various architectural styles, from ancient temples to modern skyscrapers and tranquil gardens to escape the hustle and bustle.

What factors add up to Tokyo being known as an extremely pricey vacation spot? It's a combination of circumstances, such as the high expense of staying in the city center and the extensive variety of dining options available, from cheap street cuisine to Michelin-starred fine dining.

In addition, the city's enticing nightlife draws in revelers looking for a place to let loose and party.

5. The Maldives

The Maldives, Bucket list destinations

Average Cost Of Stay: $1,548

The Maldives is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean that has come to symbolize the pinnacle of tropical luxury and privacy. Relax in style at private island resorts or overwater villas, where turquoise waters and white sand beaches set the mood for a day of pampering.

Enjoy cutting-edge spa treatments that draw inspiration from both traditional and modern therapeutic practices. Dive or snorkel to discover a thriving underwater world teeming with unique marine life and dazzling coral reefs.

To provide their guests with a private paradise where their every whim is catered to, luxury hotels located on the water tend to charge exorbitant rates.

Other expensive activities include sunset cruises, scuba diving trips, and snorkeling trips. A flight to this far-flung tropical paradise may perhaps be too expensive for some.

6. New York City

New York City

As we travel to the world-famous metropolis of New York, prepare to get swept up in the pulsating intensity of the city that never sleeps. This urban hub is a cultural melting pot, with skyscrapers, museums, and busy intersections all contributing to an energetic vibe.

Here is why a trip to New York is such a financial commitment. Expenses for lodging in popular destinations like Manhattan can be high, as can meals at hip eateries and tickets to catching a Musical show. Attractions like the high-end boutiques on Fifth Avenue and the trendy rooftop bars bolster the city's reputation for wealth.

Never fear; there are ways to see all New York City offers without emptying your wallet. Find cheap hotels in nearby boroughs such as Brooklyn or Queens, where quaint inns and motels provide a pleasant stay at a lower cost.

Explore the city's street food scene, where hot dogs, pretzels, and falafels are the best quick meals to eat on the fly and won't break the bank.

Visit the city's lesser-known attractions, such as the free art exhibitions at Chelsea galleries or the lively districts of Harlem or Williamsburg, wherein local culture survives without the hefty price tags.

7. Los Angeles

Los Angeles

Average Cost Of Stay: $1,316

Los Angeles is a happy city full of life, and its palm-lined boulevards and sunny avenues are nothing short of fantasies. If you're an adventurer looking for action, culture, and natural beauty on the West Coast of the United States, go not so , further than this huge metropolis.

“LA” is shorthand for “Los Angeles,” it describes a city that values individuality and originality. The entertainment business here has been responsible for the rise of many Hollywood legends.

Hotels in glitzy areas like Santa Monica and Beverly Hills can be extremely expensive. Spending more on fine dining and socializing with the rich and famous is inevitable. Don't overlook the draw of luxury shopping on Rodeo Drive or a performance at the world-famous Hollywood Bowl.

8. Aspen, Colorado.

Aspen

Average Cost Of Stay: $1,244

Located in the towering Rocky Mountains, this wintery paradise is a sight to behold. Skiers, hikers, and vacationers looking for a picturesque mountain retreat will find all they need in this beautiful mountain village. Aspen is a dream destination for adventurers and individuals alike because of its beautiful alpine vistas, world-class skiing, and thriving culture.

Skiers and snowboarders worldwide flock to Aspen for its world-class ski resorts, which have pristine terrain and abundant snowfall.

Why does this tourist spot cost so much to visit? The Rocky Mountains are home to numerous five-star hotels that provide first-rate lodging and easy access to some of the best skiing, diving, and snowboarding in the world.

During the busiest winter season, lift tickets can be quite pricey. Aspen also has a wide variety of fine dining establishments for those with refined palates. So all these factors make it a pricey tourist spot.

9. Sydney, Australia

Sydney Australia

Average Cost Of Stay: $1,172

Sydney is a city that combines the laid-back vibe of a beach town with the vivacity of a big city. Located on the eastern coast of Australia, Sydney is an enchanting city that will take your breath away with its spectacular scenery, historical landmarks, and cultural diversity.

The Sydney Opera House is the city's most recognizable landmark, so get ready to be amazed when you arrive. With its unusual sail-like shape, this architectural gem enhances the beauty of Sydney Harbour. The high cost of living in Sydney is reflected in the city's high lodging, food, transportation, and retail prices, among other areas.

Luxury accommodations in prime locations and the cost of trying out new gourmet restaurants and activities can put a serious dent in your savings. The high demand for goods and services in Sydney from both locals and tourists drives up the city's cost of living.

Travelers on a tighter budget can still take advantage of Sydney by staying in budget hotels, eating at inexpensive local restaurants, taking public transit, and keeping an eye out for specials and discounts.

10. Bora Bora

Bora Bora

Average Cost Of Stay: $1918

Bora Bora is a stunning South Pacific island that will leave you spellbound with its unspoiled beauty. It is a picture-perfect tropical paradise with white-sand beaches, turquoise lagoons, and picture-perfect overwater villas.

However, there is a steep price tag to go along with this paradise's attraction. Bora Bora is one of the most costly vacation spots because of its high exclusivity and luxury.

The high prices result from the shortage of luxury resorts that provide the same level of privacy and comfort.

Bora Bora offers unparalleled luxury, from overwater villas where guests can swim with exotic fish and other marine life to exclusive restaurants with breathtaking sunset views. The exorbitant cost of importing products and the island's isolated position also add to the total price tag.

Experience The Most Expensive Places

12 Bucket List Attractions That Are Totally Worth the Hype

These are the world's most expensive countries to visit

Travel is expensive. Between flights, hotels, meals, transportation, and the barrage of tourist traps, it is hard to keep to a strict budget when traveling in a different country.

However, it's even harder if you don't do your due diligence.

In the recently published 2015 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness report , the World Economic Forum ranks 141 countries based on how cheap/expensive it is to travel there. This takes into account things like average cost of a flights to and from, average cost of hotel accommodations, cost of living, fuel prices, and purchasing power parity (PPP)*.

Knowing the costs of visiting an area can make all the difference between traveling sensibly and hitchhiking back to the airport.

Note: Hotel and gas conversions are based on the US dollar and information from the World Bank  and are subject to change. PPP is relative to the country's home currency.

*An example of PPP: If the PPP in the United States is 1 and the PPP in Poland is .6, then a cup of coffee in Poland is 40% cheaper than it is in the US, relative to the Polish zloty. PPP is based on the GDP of each economy.

France cracks the top three, aided by airfare rates that rank 114th in the world. To stay in a nice French hotel, one can expect to pay about $219.80 per night, which ranks 93rd of 102 economies from which data was recovered.

Goods and services in France are about 10% more than the US and sit at 128th overall with a 1.1 PPP. Gas costs about $7.21 per gallon, good for 118th in the world.

#2 United Kingdom

top ten most expensive countries to visit

If you want to visit the United Kingdom, don't fly. The United Kingdom ranks dead last in terms of airfare, making flights there the most expensive in the world. Hotel rooms come at a much more reasonable price of $139.10, good for 56th in the world.

The PPP in the UK is 10% greater than that of the US, making goods and services slightly more expensive (123rd overall). Gas (or "petrol" as the English say), costs $8.20 per gallon, which is 136th in the world.

#1 Switzerland

top ten most expensive countries to visit

Switzerland is the most expensive country in the world to visit. Flying to Switzerland is not cheap, as Swiss airfare rates rank 101st in the world. Once you get there, expect your hotel to cost you an average of $241.60 per night, good for 97th of 102 economies surveyed.

The PPP of Switzerland is 1.5 (137th), which means that goods and services in Switzerland will cost 50% more than they do in the US. Finally, gas costs $7.10 per gallon, which is 117th in the world.

Some of these areas are among the most popular tourist destinations in the world. But before you get on that plane make sure you packed enough cash.

So you don’t end up wasting time and money on activities, food, and accommodation that don’t live up to their hefty price tags.

20th: israel, 19. ireland, 17. the united kingdom, 15. seychelles, 14. uae (united arab emirates), 13. australia, 11. singapore, 10. barbados, 9. the maldives, 8. luxembourg, 5. the bahamas, 1. switzerland.

So let’s take a look at the 20 most expensive countries in the world to visit so you can start planning and saving so you’ll be prepared for the spending!

20th of the Most Expensive Countries to Visit is Israel.

Israel is a country that might take many people by surprise for how expensive it is to visit. Fair enough since this seems to be a relatively new phenomenon. This fascinating Middle Eastern country has a lot to offer a visitor. So don’t let these recent price hikes scare you off.

The main expense for tourists in Israel is the high cost of accommodation. And it doesn’t seem to match up with the rest of a traveler’s expenses. For example, the cost of a room for the same chain of hotels in Israel’s major cities can be triple the price or more than for a room in cities like Milan, Barcelona, or even Zurich which is one of the most expensive cities in the world.

The high cost of accommodation in Israel is largely attributed to a shortage of rooms and the apparent high costs of running hotels. Whatever the reason, if you’re planning on visiting Israel and staying in a hotel, this will put a big strain on your budget.

Luckily everything in Israel isn’t as expensive as a hotel room. So if you’re lucky enough to have family or friends to stay with then you’ll find that food and activities are a bit less scary for your budget.

Budget per day? I was going to add this for each of the countries. But actually, they’re all so expensive you basically need to budget $150 per day minimum for all of them! After that, it simply depends on how nice a hotel you stay in, or how much you drink!

Things to do in Tel Aviv

My home country! And while the days of the ‘Celtic Tiger’ are gone, Ireland has remained a very expensive country since those economic boom times for about a decade starting in the mid 1990’s. When the country switched to the euro in 2002 prices seemed to shoot up in all areas. And Ireland has remained an expensive place to visit ever since.

There are so many wonderful things to do all around Ireland . But for many people, all roads lead to the pub at some point! But time spent soaking up Ireland’s amazing pub culture will soon add up. With eating and drinking out two activities that will soon break the bank.

Some pubs in Dublin charge over €8 for a pint of Guinness. So you can’t expect to save money by sticking with the nation’s favorite drink while you’re at the pub! Eating out is just as expensive and even food bought at the grocery store will catch many people off guard with the prices. You’ll also be shelling out a good amount for accommodation and transportation. But at least Ireland is small so there won’t be any long-distance trips to figure into the budget.

Luckily Ireland is a fabulous country for cycling and camping and many of its charms are found outside its expensive capital city. Once you leave Dublin you’ll find that things will become slightly more affordable. But you’ll still need to plan well in order to get the best deals on accommodation and any tours you decide to take. Ireland is one of the most open and welcoming places in the world. So, at the very least, you can expect that a friendly local will spot you a pint or two!

Is Ireland in Europe?

This small Middle Eastern country might not be at the top of most people’s travel bucket lists . But it’s full of charm. And, if you can afford it, it makes for an interesting experience that’s a bit out of the ordinary. Even though Kuwait is a tax haven and doesn’t charge any sales tax to visitors and locals alike, it still manages to be a very costly place to visit with ordinary hotel rooms often topping $200 per night. And food and services costing a lot more than most travelers are used to.

While Kuwait is a very expensive country to visit, you can help your budget by being smart with your planning. The first piece of advice would be to avoid traveling in January, June, or November. Because that’s when the prices of flights and hotels will be the highest.

December and spring are cheaper times to visit. You can also eat on more of a budget if you go local by visiting the Kuwait City souk and eating street food rather than dining in restaurants which can cost a small fortune! One very pleasant budget surprise is the incredibly low cost of fuel. But chances are good that the cost of renting a car will be high so most visitors won’t get to take advantage of this, anyway.

most expensive country in the world

Visitors to the United Kingdom can expect to pay a LOT for the pleasure of exploring this small but diverse country. You get Scotland, Northern Ireland , England, and Wales all in one package within the UK. And a trip to any or all of the regions will be an exciting blend of tradition, nature, and culture. As with any country you visit, your budget will be determined by your travel style. So where you visit, and any activities you want to fit in, among other things.

The UK is a little different to other countries on our most expensive country in the world list. Why? Because the UK is a place that visitors can either visit cheaply with a lot of planning. Or you can completely blow your budget out of the water if you choose.

Spending a lot of time in London is one sure way to rid yourself of your hard earned cash quickly! Here food and accommodation will cost a small fortune, especially if you’re in Central London. Even if you choose to stay on the outskirts of the city, you’ll end up paying a lot in transportation costs to get back into the center to see the main sights. Then there are tours and admission fees and more. London is absolutely worth a look but it’s definitely an easy place to blow your money if you’re not careful.

Life gets cheaper as you move away from the UK’s huge capital city. Bt most travelers will still find the entire country to be expensive. Food and services can cost a lot and train travel will be very expensive if you don’t book well in advance or figure out how to get deals. Luckily bus travel is more affordable and less prone to massive spikes in the prices. And much of the country is covered by a good network and with many companies to choose from.

How many countries in Europe

As a Scandinavian country, Sweden is often close to the top of lists of the most expensive countries to visit in the world. But in more recent years plenty of places have caught up. That doesn’t mean that Sweden has gotten more affordable, just that the rest of the world is getting more expensive!

Wages and the cost of living in Sweden are both very high. This means that visitors will be met with high costs of goods, services, and accommodation that match up with what locals are able to pay. P

art of this is due to Sweden’s very strong labor laws which makes it expensive to employ people which then drives the costs ever upward. This is not a bad thing if you live in and are employed in Sweden. But tourists will feel the pinch. Especially when eating out at restaurants or buying drinks in a bar. Young Swedes have been known to take ‘booze cruises’ to Estonia. Where they drink and stock up on liquor so if alcohol is considered expensive by those living in Sweden and earning a Swedish wage, you can imagine how shocking the prices might be to a traveler.

This is where I celebrated visiting my 150th country! See our pic below.

Located around 700 miles northeast of Madagascar and 1,000 miles east of Kenya, the Seychelles is a remote island nation that is difficult and expensive to get to. Visitors will likely have to fly into an eastern African nation. And then transit onward or there are some direct flights from Paris (one of the most visited cities in the world ). But all of these options will be costly so your budget could be in trouble from the very start.

As a remote island nation with little industry, around 80% of consumables in the Seychelles are imported. This is reflected in the prices visitors will pay for practically everything on the island which will drive up the cost of your trip. Many remote island nations have this same issue and you’ll find a few more expensive islands on this list. Seychelles is a beautiful place, though. And if you want to relax on a gorgeous beach while taking in some interesting culture, it should be on your list of must-see places.

Home to Dubai, Abu Dhabi Etc. Remember, Dubai isn’t a country . The UAE is the country! The United Arab Emirates is one of the richest countries in the world. This due largely to its production of petroleum, petrochemicals, aluminum, and cement. These industries have enriched the whole nation. And, as a result, salaries here are very high and as a result of that, prices are high as well.

Along with the general costs of food and other things, accommodation and activities are two major areas where a trip to the UAE will drive up costs. Hotels in the UAE (especially in Dubai and Abu Dhabi) are notoriously expensive and finding a good deal will be tricky. The same goes for activities. A lot of the best things to do in the UAE will require you to take an organized tour. And these are often very pricey too.

Getting out to see the amazing sights in the desert, for example, is something that’s difficult to do as an independent traveler without your own transport, so a tour is a must. These activities quickly add up and can be a killer for even the most carefully budgeted trip.

DUBAI IN 48 HOURS

I lived in Australia for a year, on a working holiday visa . Great memories.

Unless you’ve come from a Pacific Island country , Asia , or New Zealand, you can expect that the price of actually just getting to Australia will be quite a large chunk of the cost of your trip. Then unfortunately things don’t get much cheaper on arrival. Where prices in Australia are surprisingly high for visitors from most countries around the world.

If you plan on spending your time in Sydney or Melbourne then you can expect to pay a lot more for accommodation and entertainment. As with any major world city. But nowhere is cheap. If you want to hire a van or camp your way around more rural areas then you should be able to cut your spending a bit. Getting out of the cities as soon as you can will stretch your funds. But the cities are also great centers for culture, sports, and activities so make sure to budget for some city life, too.

The good news is that Australians love to travel and are generally very welcoming and friendly! They pop up in all sorts of places all over the world. So if you’re planning a longer-term trip where you visit many countries, leave Australia until close to the end because, who knows, you might meet a few new Aussie friends on your travels who will invite you to stay with them!

most expensive countries to visit

As with many countries on this list, the United States is a large nation with huge differences between the regions. So it’s almost impossible to pin down an average cost of a visit here. But none of it is cheap, believe me!

Travelers who choose to go between major cities like New York or Los Angeles will require a much different budget than those who spend their time in the countryside camping. Or who visit smaller, more regional areas.

But as a whole the United States is likely to be expensive for most visitors because they’ll at least be transiting through major hubs and the country is huge so getting around it will also add up.

While the United States can be comparatively affordable for things like gasoline and consumer goods, it will get very expensive when you start to eat out, take taxis, or even get a haircut and this is due to the hidden cost of tips.

Tipping culture in the US is huge. And it would take a brave tourist to buck this trend. So you’ll have to add at least 20% onto any meals where you have a waiter. Or tip a few bucks anytime someone carries a bag for you, offer extra money to guides on any tours you take. And you’ll also find yourself tipping for many things you wouldn’t expect! This adds up very quickly and will make the US a lot more expensive than you may first have thought.

Unlike many of the other countries on this list, though, the US is a place that can still be visited on a kinder budget if you do a lot of planning ahead. And try to avoid too much eating out or other interactions with the service industries. But hotels, meals, tours etc? They all cost a bomb.

Remember to make sure your travel insurance covers you in the US. If something happens, it can bankrupt you. I recommend THESE GUYS .

most expensive countries in the world

Singapore is a tricky one. On one hand, I thought it should be included in the top 10 most expensive countries to visit in the world. For sure, the last 2 or 3 times I’ve been, I’ve spent a fortune! And that’s true. Central Singapore is crazy. The expats and some of the locals earn huge salaries. Hotels are pricey. Drinks, snazzy restaurants, activities. All expensive.

However, Singapore does have another side. Where a most of the other countries on this list doesn’t. In Norway, Switzerland etc it’s nigh-on impossible to avoid any expensive choices. In Singapore they do have food courts. They do have affordable public transport. You can drink beers at night markets. Still not ‘cheap’. But not quite as crazy as the other countries higher on the list.

So yeah. I love Singapore. And it is REALLY expensive. But with some research, the worst of the expensiveness (is that a word?) can be avoided. Hence 11th place.

singapore itinerary

This small island nation in the South Caribbean sea has a very high standard of living for its residents. And, coupled with the need to import most things, visitors here will find that a trip to this beautiful place will be a very pricey one.

One of the main expenses visitors will notice straight away is the cost of eating out in restaurants. This is often an expensive thing to do no matter where you are. But in Barbados restaurant costs can sometimes even exceed those for accommodation! And accommodation doesn’t come cheaply, either, with many visitors choosing to stay in luxury hotels or coming as part of a package holiday. There are some inexpensive eateries peppered around the island if you know where to look, though. For drinkers, keep an eye out for rum shops which you’ll find all over the island. They’re low-key, often open-air bars that have been a part of the culture for over 300 years. And, importantly, they sell drinks (especially rum punch) cheaply!

Barbados is a stunning island and with that comes beaches and plenty of other outdoor activities that don’t cost a thing! If you want to stretch your budget, spend time in nature doing things for free. This way you’ll truly find the charms of this amazing and beautiful place.

most expensive country to travel

Where I celebrated my 100th country! At the Niyama Per Aquum resort .

The Maldives is made up of a collection of islands scattered across a patch of the Indian Ocean. And it’s one of the most beautiful and most expensive places to visit in the world. The best beaches in the Maldives are amongst the best in the world.

Tourism is the main source of income for Asia’s smallest country . And much of this is made up of five-star luxury resorts. Some of the resorts even occupy their own entire islands! With this amazing beauty and high-quality accommodation comes a hefty price tag and The Maldives will require some saving and planning if you’re going to make it here for a visit. Budget $500+ for an overwater bungalow. Per night!

Because of its remote location, just getting to the Maldives will likely cost a lot. Then, when you arrive into the country it’s quite possible that you’ll need to still transit on to your final destination. So it’s likely that you’ll have spent a lot before you even arrive and get settled in. My seaplane was $500 alone when I went!

The island has a reputation for luxury and the accommodation options reflect this so finding somewhere budget to stay might be tricky. It won’t be impossible. But even if you do find affordable accommodation, you’re still on a remote island. And this means that most goods are imported into the country which in turn makes everything very expensive.

If you want to get around having to buy food and drinks separately then a package deal that’s all-inclusive would make the most sense. But these definitely don’t come cheaply. If you’d rather go it alone then you’ll need to do a lot of research and planning and even then, you’re likely to spend a lot. There’s no way around it. The Maldives is an expensive place to visit! But it is paradise on earth. And some things are just worth splashing out for.

most expensive country to visit

Luxembourg, a tiny city-state in Europe, regularly ranks high on lists as one of the most expensive places to live in the world. And this also means that it’s very expensive to visit as a tourist. Salaries in Luxembourg are super high. So, as a resident, life there will generally be affordable with a decent job. According to an October 2021 IMF report, the GDP of Luxembourg is a whopping $180,366 and the country has prices across the board that match up with this. Wow!

Visitors will need to shell out a bit more than in most other European countries. But there is some hope! Tax breaks make things like alcohol and gasoline surprisingly affordable. However, services like hair dressers, taxis, dentists, etc. can be very costly. So save your haircuts and toothaches for another country. And avoid taxis by researching and using Luxembourg’s free public transport system. Yes, free!

On March 1st, 2020, Luxembourg became the first place in the world to offer free public transport with all trains, buses, and trams available at no cost both for residents and tourists. This is an incredibly innovative and refreshing approach. And being able to take advantage of free public transportation will certainly free up a nice chunk of the budget to spend on other things.

expensive countries to visit

Japan is an incredible country. With an amazing mix of hyper-development and old traditional ways and values. It’s a trip dear to my heart. My mum and I climbed Mount Fuji together to raise money for Parkinson’s Disease . It was beautiful.

A trip to Japan won’t come cheaply, though. With food, accommodation, and travels costs quickly adding up. Especially if you’re comparing Japan to other Asian countries in the region. But, while a trip to Japan will be a lot more expensive than, say, a trip to Vietnam , it’s not as expensive as you might think. And it is possible to find deals and cut costs if you plan well.

For example, deals on transportation can be had if you plan ahead and buy travel passes. But you’ll definitely want to avoid taxis as much as you can as fares are very expensive. For food, you can find great deals at lunch if you look for restaurants that offer ‘teishoku’ (a set menu). Sushi is also surprisingly affordable, compared with other options. Especially given the amazing quality you can expect!

For accommodation, you’ll still find plenty of affordable hostels, casual hotels and small hotels for under $70. And generally, the quality will be very good.

As for tours and entertainment, those things can add up quickly. But if you’re on a budget then luckily Japan is packed with amazing nature to explore. You could even save on transport by choosing to cycle around Japan. A popular way to see the nation for the more adventurous folks out there.

PS. Don’t miss the GORGEOUS Japan snow monkeys if you go in winter!

Climbing Mount Fuji at 70

One of the least visited countries in the world . This mysterious, mountainous country in the southern foothills of the Himalayas has a unique policy of high-quality, low-volume tourism. And it uses a very high daily ‘tourism fee’ to keep everything under control.

Unless you’re Indian, Bangladeshi, or Maldivian, you’ll have to shell out US$250 PER DAY during the high season (March to May and November to September). And US$200 per day in the low season for the privilege to step foot in the country. This is a sort of combination of a visa fee along with a package tour. It includes a licensed Bhutanese guide from an official country tour operator , a driver, accommodation (in hotels that are at least three stars), entrance fees to tourist sights, food and drink at hotel or local restaurants, trekking gear, and all taxes.

Costs that aren’t included are souvenirs, alcohol, and tips (usually 10% on top of the tour cost). Plus you’ll also have to pay for your flight. And, considering this is a very remote place, it’s unlikely to come cheap unless you’re already in the region.

The daily tour fees and the flight in will all add up to a very expensive trip. But you can be sure that you’ll have a very unique experience and be one of the very few people who visit this amazing nation. It was one of the best places I’ve ever visited.

I had one of the worst travel experiences in my life here. Christmas day. Solo. Middle of nowhere. Everything closed. Had to take a taxi and have Christmas Dinner using the vending machines in the airport!

Anyway, the Bahamas ranks as one of the most expensive places to live. So you can bet that those expenses will be felt also by visitors. Many travelers come here as part of expensive package holidays and stay in all-inclusive resorts. But if you’re looking to stray from the beach to see the real Bahamas then be prepared to pay.

As an island nation, almost everything is imported (and then taxed). That means that almost everything is expensive. It’s not unusual to pay US$10 for a bottle of beer or US$18 for a cocktail. And it’s estimated that daily expenses here, including accommodation, food, and transportation, can add up to as much as US$200 per day!

I did it independently and it cost me a bomb. It makes me wonder whether a package holiday might be the more affordable way to see the country. Especially if you like to drink and want to do a lot of activities.

But even if you visit The Bahamas independently, if you know what to expect and plan and save accordingly, you’re unlikely to regret a visit to a country that many would describe as paradise. Although I find it a little boring. Like a lot of the Caribbean countries, to be honest.

EDIT 2023: I recently visited Staniel cay Bahamas , where I went swimming with pigs with my wife too. And I changed my mind completely. Having more money these days, we had such an amazing time!

most expensive countries in the world to visit

Scandinavia as a whole is known as being a very expensive place and Denmark is no exception, even though the costs here can take people by surprise. When people hear about how expensive Scandinavia is, many immediately (and rightly so) think of Norway and then Sweden, but Denmark is actually very pricey in its own right!

One of my favourite places on earth. Copenhagen is right up there with the best cities ever.

Visitors to Denmark can get there cheaply enough, especially those traveling from Europe. But the budget will take a hit as goods and services are consumed.

Wages in Denmark are very high. And the local population can likely afford to pay more for things. The cost of a coffee, for example, might be a shock to a visitor. But not that big a deal to someone living in Denmark and earning a local wage.

Eating out, utilities, and petrol are especially expensive but tourists are unlikely to be paying for electricity, so at least there’s that! But if you think you’ll get around high restaurant costs by cooking for yourself, beware that groceries are also quite costly in Denmark.

One day in Copenhagen

Tucked far away up north, we have Iceland. Which is so far away and isolated that everything that has to be imported (and that’s most things) will just cost more.

There’s no way around it when you’re an island without close neighbors. But Iceland is such a gem of a country that it’s completely worth the extra expense!

The good news is that flights into Iceland aren’t as expensive as you might expect. And you can often visit on a stopover between Europe and North America . Once you’re in the country, though, you’ll want to be careful about what you spend on eating and drinking. Because you’ll burn through your budget very quickly if you’re not careful.

Even if you want to live simply by hiring a camper van (or even renting a car and camping) and making your own sandwiches and other simple meals along the way, you’ll still be surprised at the costs for both! If you want to eliminate most transportation costs from your trip then cycling is a popular option in Iceland. But obviously this is only in the summer months and, even then, the weather can be unpredictable.

Don’t miss snorkeling between the tectonic plates when you’re in Iceland either.

Ice caving in Iceland

Where I celebrated my 197th and FINAL country!

Norway is world-famous for being a very expensive country to visit. But it has so much to offer that it’s definitely worth trying to save up to see this amazing place. It’s not going to be a good choice if you’re looking for a trip involving lots of partying and eating out. that will completely break the bank! But if you have the budget for that then Oslo is a fun city to explore. It’s filled with excellent restaurants and places to visit on a night out. You’ll just have to be prepared to pay a lot for the experience!

Beware when in the more touristy areas close to the water because this already expensive city goes into hyperdrive. Especially if you’re ordering alcohol. If you’re a drinker and enjoy exploring a city’s nightlife, make sure to bring in some Duty-Free and drink before you head out in Olso. Or you could easily blow your budget on one night out! You can pay $20 for a drink if you’re not careful.

Leaving the capital and getting out into nature is where the true charms lie in Norway. And you’d do well to explore outside of the capital city. The problem is that transportation is crazy expensive. So getting around will require some planning and a big budget, too. Even the bus in from the airport to Oslo is surprisingly pricey for the short half-hour trip!

If you have the budget, check out Norway’s famous snow hotel in Kirkenes in the north.

svalbard norway

Switzerland has long been at or close to the top of many lists of the world’s most expensive countries. So it’s no surprise that it tops our list as well!

According to a 2021 IMF report, the annual GDP of Switzerland is $87,097. So where tourists might be shocked by prices where the country’s affluent citizens don’t seem to notice.

Switzerland is truly a gem of a place. With some of the most amazing natural spaces to explore along with vibrant, beautiful cities. If you want to visit Switzerland and want to keep things a bit more affordable, you’ll want to focus more on the natural wonders and get out of the cities as soon as possible. But also beware because there are just so many amazing tours and activities to enjoy in nature that you’ll surely be tempted into spending no matter where you end up. Basically, bring plenty of money. Or don’t bother coming.

Switzerland is a country that’s worth saving for, though. Especially if outdoor adventure and mountains are your thing. You’ll pay a lot for an average meal out. And even if you try to hit up the grocery stores to cobble together your own meals, it’ll still be surprisingly pricey.

Accommodation and transportation will both cost you a lot, too. But if you go in knowing what to expect and budget accordingly, hopefully you’ll have an amazing trip that doesn’t come with too many horrible budget surprises! Switzerland will be a trip that you’ll likely have to save up for. But once you do you’ll be happy to have made that choice because it’s an amazing country. And it would be a shame to cross it off your list just because it’s expensive.

22 of the Most Expensive Vacations You Can Take

top ten most expensive countries to visit

When money is no object, the entire world becomes a destination. Whether you’ve recently won the Powerball, inherited a fortune, or just started feeling a hole burning in your pocket, there are endless reasons to start researching a (gilded) bucket list trip.

The Pikaia Lodge in Ecuador

Pay homage to evolution with a stay on Darwin’s favorite archipelago, the Galapagos. The Pikaia Lodge was “designed for the environmentally conscious, physically active and adventurous traveler,” and is centrally located to allow easy access to all of the islands.

Guests can dine at the lodge’s restaurant on the edge of a crater or wander around the facilities and come face-to-face with a giant tortoise. A week's stay in the lodge’s pool suite starts at $10,205 per person.

North Island in Seychelles

Vacation like George and Amal Clooney at this private island resort. There are only 11 villas, ensuring that it’s possible to get far, far away from the rest of the world. The Villa North Island is the most exclusive at the resort, available at about $11,000 per night. Within the villa’s 8,000 square feet there’s a series of wooden decks, a coconut grove, and even a private entrance to a secluded beach. And for what it’s worth: Rumor has it that Will and Kate honeymooned here, too.

The Post House at Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, California

The wealthy clientele who stay at the Post Ranch Inn generally do so to escape the rest of the world while enjoying views of the Pacific Ocean. The luxury resort’s most expensive accommodation takes these wishes up to the next level, with an added dash of coziness. Guests at the Post House have unparalleled views of the ocean, whether that’s through the floor-to-ceiling windows from their beds or across the horizon from their private jacuzzis. The room is available for $4,350 per night.

Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge in Rwanda

The newly opened Bisate Lodge sits directly next to Rwanda’s Volcano National Park. The secluded location only has six villas, all designed to resemble the palaces of traditional Rwandan monarchs, featuring a central fireplace and decks overlooking the nearby volcanoes. Guests can opt to help in the lodge’s reforestation project and contribute to conservation efforts for Rwanda’s mountain gorillas. Rooms start at $1,100 per person per night.

White Desert “Greatest Trip” to Antarctica

For those who want an ultimate luxury vacation but don’t have much time to spend, White Desert offers a one-day trip to Antarctica. Starting off from Cape Town, guests board a Gulfstream Private Jet and set off for the icy continent. Travelers have about eight hours to explore, ending in a gourmet champagne dinner. The entire trip lasts less than 24 hours but will set you back $195,000.

Tierra Patagonia in Chile

The reason to travel to Tierra Patagonia is clear. Its large, spacious windows frame an unobstructed view of the mountains in Torres del Paine National Park. The “luxury adventure” hotel encourages guests to cozy up on the couch with a glass of Chilean wine to enjoy the view after a day of hiking. The hotel’s all-inclusive suite starts at $3,400 per person per night for a double occupancy.

The Hilltop Villa at Laucala Island Resort in Fiji

High atop Fiji’s Laucala Island, there’s a $44,000-per-night villa where guests can experience the ultimate in secluded luxury. The villa sits far away from the rest of civilization and it’s only accessible via private road on an already private island. However, even the uber-wealthy might not be able to get in here: A reservation requires approval by the island’s owner.

The Penthouse Apartment at the Hotel Georges V in Paris, France

One of Paris’s most famous luxury hotels is home to one of the city’s most iconic views. From the private balcony of the penthouse apartment at the Hotel Georges V, there’s an unobstructed view of the Eiffel Tower across the Seine — ideal for photo shoots or romantic gestures. Inside the hotel suite, there’s a flurry of luxe features, including a marble infinity bathtub. The room starts at about $26,500 per night.

Necker Island

Vacation like Richard Branson and Barack Obama on Necker Island. The private island in the British Virgin Islands has a variety of wildlife and will set guests up with scuba, waterskiing or sailing gear to go explore it all. It’s available from $80,000 per night for up to 34 guests — or, you know, just you and the former president of the United States of America.

Villa Manzu in Costa Rica

This estate spread across five acres of isolated peninsula into the Pacific Ocean. There are only eight suites on the entire property, ensuring serenity. Guests also have access to the villa’s wine room, stocked with sommelier-chosen bottles and award-winning cigars. And for those who care about celeb standards: earlier this year the Kardashian clan stayed at the lodge for their Costa Rican vacation. It’s available to rent starting at $16,500 per night.

Africa House at The Royal Malewane at Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa

Glampers on safari can elect to stay at this air-conditioned house, complete with four-poster beds in all six rooms. After a day of tracking down the Big Five with a private game ranger and tracker, guests can have a meal cooked by their private chef or head to the resort’s spa for a massage. Accommodations start at about $15,000 per night for up to eight guests — although it’s also possible to rent out the entire resort for $51,000 per night.

Fogo Island Inn in Canada

It’s not cheap to reach the end of the world. Travelers who want to reach this boutique hotel at the end of the world (a remote island in Newfoundland, Canada) can either go on a timely journey or charter a helicopter ride in. Once they’ve arrived, guests can join a sponsorship program where they’re matched with locals to understand the area’s culture or instead relax in one of the hotel’s rooftop hot tubs. Fogo Island Inn’s most exclusive lodging, called the Flat Earth suite, only reveals its price upon request — although it’s rumored to be somewhere in the $3,100 per night range.

Chalet Zermatt Peak in Zermatt, Switzerland

After hitting the slopes, wealthy skiers can escape to this luxury five-star chalet with 13 friends. It comes equipped with a Michelin-starred gourmet chef, ready to whip up apres-ski treats, and two in-house massages per day. A weeklong stay at the chalet starts at about $57,000 but can reach up to $191,000, depending on the season.

Guests board the ship from the Six Senses Zighy Bay and set sail through the Musandam fjords, stopping in secluded fishing villages and private bays. It’s possible to book a spa therapist, cooking classes with the chef or dives in the bay aboard the Dhahab . It costs $22,000 for a three-day, two-night itinerary on the boat.

Maharajah’s Pavilion at Raj Palace in Jaipur, India

This extravagant four-floor apartment has its own private entrance and private elevator, which guests can ride all the way to the top. On the last floor, there’s a rooftop terrace, complete with a jacuzzi and panoramic views of Jaipur. And to really feel like a king, there’s a private museum on the second floor displaying the Old Throne and Bolsters of the Thakur Sahib. The palatial suite is available from $15,000 per night.

Royal Penthouse Suite at the President Wilson Hotel in Geneva

This exclusive hotel suite is often acknowledged as the most expensive in the world and the biggest in Europe. For $80,000 per night, guests have access to 12 rooms and over 5,500 square feet of space. However the crowning feature of the suite is the wraparound terrace with views of the Alps over Lac Leman.

Presidential Suite at the Hotel Principe di Savoia in Milan, Italy

The ultimate in Italian opulence is perhaps best personified by the presidential suite at the Hotel Principe di Savoia. The suite comes complete with chandeliers, velvet furniture and even an iconic in-suite swimming pool. It’s available from $20,000 per night.

Alang Alang Chateau in Cannes, France

For those who would rather not deal with hotels, this “Balinese retreat” in Cannes is a luxurious escape for up to 15 of your closest friends. The villa comes with its own picturesque pool and staff, but perhaps the most memorable feature is the dinosaur skull displayed in the living room. The property’s available starting at about $41,000 per night.

The Royal Suite at the Burj al Arab in Dubai

Prices for the 15-day journey start at $30,995 for the Imperial Suite.

The Big Apple is also a traditional hub for industry, commerce, cuisines, fashion and culture. While there is always something new afoot in the city, you don’t need an excuse to spend money here. African Elephants swimming across the Chobe River Botswana with tourists on safari watches on

Botswana isn’t the first destination that comes to mind while thinking about expensive and splurge-worthy places to visit. That said, if you want to visit paradise on earth, few places can compete with the charms of Botswana. About one-thirds of this country is covered by untouched reserves and national parks, all of which are home to some of the most exotic plants and animals that the world has ever seen. The concept of safaris may not have been invented here, but you can enjoy some of the most luxurious safaris in this African nation. Night view of Jamaa el Fna a square and market place in Marrakesh Morocco

We long for the sun and sand, exotic animals and grand safaris, but most of those holidays can be summed up in a couple of photographs. What makes Marrakesh so different is its diversity and splendid history. You get to discover ancient hammams that probably discovered the concepts of shedding skin and exfoliation, 18th century architectural gems, old-world alleys, souqs, henna tattoos and a deep-rooted culture. Trips to Marrakesh are all about losing your sense of direction, visiting mesmerizing palaces, living the life of royals and exploring an ever-changing medina that satiates your quest for modernity without depriving your senses of an overdose of history and medieval charm.

A view of Sydney Opera House illuminated with colourful light

Let’s face it. Australia  as a country is expensive. Sydney, more so. The Australian dollar has been gaining strength in the past few years, and this means that places like Melbourne and Sydney now compete with traditional powerhouses such as Hong Kong and Copenhagen . Your flight fares are most probably going to be exorbitant, and that’s just the beginning. Despite the splurge, Sydney has a way of leaving you with a smile on your face. Maybe the sight of iconic images such as the Golden Harbor Bridge or Sydney Opera House leaves you pleased with your experience. Or it could be an after-effect of spending days being seduced by beautiful parks and outdoor pools, aromatic frangipani and that perfect weather. The city is impressively cosmopolitan, and its harbor ranks among the very best. Coastal walks, scenic rides, satisfying dips, Sydney is all about living life right, enjoying the great outdoors while diving into a wealth of cultural riches that range from ethnic enclaves and Aborginal heritage to world class museums and some of the best restaurants on the planet.

A list of the world’s 10 most expensive travel destinations can never be complete without London, the capital of an empire that once dominated the planet. An excess of architecture, breath-taking artifacts from all continents, centuries-old attractions, you’re still not scratching the surface. London hosts people from all over the world, and this resulted in a cultural melting pot, one that possibly offers insights into every imaginable culture and its people. London is also about living the good life. English football is quickly making a name for itself as one of the most exciting sports the world has seen, and watching Arsenal, Chelsea or Tottenham could just be the perfect way to discover why the English are so passionate about their football. Away from history and sporting action, elaborate afternoon teas let you relive the romance and grandeur of old days while chic restaurants, pubs and nightclubs remind you why everyone is always in awe. The sun never sets on the British Empire, and that saying is perhaps best felt in its capital, a true center of the world.

The Royal Sands resort with beautiful beach and swimming pool in Cancun

Aah. Cancun! You’d think of places like Bora Bora, Fiji and Seychelles when it came to the list of the world’s 10 most expensive travel destinations. But turns out that the powdery-soft sands and crystal clear water of Cancun coupled with its huge fanfare, crazy spring break parties and picture-perfect beaches steal the show. The city offers an excess of sun, sand and sin, but don’t make the mistake of ignoring its mysterious heritage. This is after all your stepping stone into the wonders and stories of the Mayans.

The cityscape at the Caracas in Venezuela

Chaotic traffic, a sprawling city, overpopulation, hectic scenes. You’re often wondering why you came to the city in the first place. Caracas takes time to grow on you, but soon manages to leave you spellbound with its untouched interiors and magnificent culture. The Parque Nacional El Avila should be one of the first destinations on your itinerary, but Teresa Carreno Cultural Complex and Paseo Los Proceres should also be on your list of things to do. So what is it that makes Caracas so expensive? Years of mismanagement and corruption in military and the government crippled this South American economy and as a result, something as simple as ‘milk’ doesn’t have an official price! Caracas certainly has its own list of problems, but should you brave a trip here, you’re sure to enjoy one of the most enriching journeys of your life. A true eye opener! Safety might be a concern so you’d want to get in touch with your local embassy before visiting.

Larcomar mall in Miraflores Lima Peru

Lima enjoys an enviable location on top of cliffs that offer endless views of the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in South America , and its history, culture, attractions and lifestyles play a huge role in making you splurge. It’s no longer a mere connection to the exotic Machu Picchu , it is a destination in itself. It boasts a thriving gastronomic scene and live music venues, nightclubs and bars tend to open on a monthly basis. The museums and galleries are full of Inca relics while colonial churches and pre-Colombian pyramids ensure that you always have something to see and do. There’s a price for perfection, and perhaps that’s why Lima asks you to pay through the roof!

Even the scenic train rides around Switzerland are rather costly. The famous Glacier Express will cost you about 200€ full price for a ticket in high season!

Switzerland budgeting tips

Iceland is one of the countries that are on most people’s travel bucket lists. The Land of Ice and Fire is undoubtedly stunning, with some of the most unique scenery in the world.

Yet, when people are showing breathtaking UNESCO-listed landscape photos of Iceland on social media, nobody tells you how expensive that country truly is.

Iceland is one of the most expensive countries to visit in Europe!

If budget is not a problem, Iceland is one of the safest countries for solo female travelers.

When you look at the map, you can see Iceland is a very remote island, closer to Greenland than continental Europe. That means almost everything has to be imported.

It is almost impossible to travel around Iceland without a car, and renting a car as a solo traveler is far from budget-friendly.

Iceland budgeting tips

The best way to save money in Iceland is to travel in a group.

Unusual advice from somebody running a solo female travel blog, but if you can split the cost of a rental car and gas, lots of things in Iceland are actually completely free to visit.

Depending on the season, you can find a hostel in Ireland for under 40€ a night. Food and drinks costs are pretty stable throughout the year, with average Western European prices.

Ireland budgeting tips

Also, the food in supermarkets is more expensive than you might be used to.

You can actually find nice hostels for less than 30€ a night, which is better than what you can do in Paris or London!

6. United Kingdom

The average daily cost of travel in the UK: 60-150€ ($65-160 US)

The UK is one of the most expensive European countries to visit, there’s no way around it.

London is notorious for being overpriced, so don’t be surprised if you get served a 10€ coffee. Eating out is an experience and a luxury, so be ready to pay 10-20€ for a main dish in a mid-range restaurant.

If you think you’ll save money by using public transport, think again.

Trains in the UK are only affordable if you book well in advance. Those who like spontaneous last-minute trips will struggle to try to stay on a budget.

Some say the UK has the best nightlife in Europe , which could be true if you’re not worried about your budget!

UK budgeting tips

Get away from London and explore the rest of the country!

However, even if you stay in London, there are so many free museums and tourist attractions. One of the best things to do in the city is to stroll the streets of the city.

Food in supermarkets tends to be quite affordable, and stores often have good-value meal deals. Avoid eating out by preparing a meal in your accommodation.

Buses are cheaper than trains! If you’re not in a rush, opt for a good old coach.

🎟️ With this GetYourGuide pass you can save up to 50% on entry to your choice of up to 7 top London attractions

The average daily cost of travel in Finland: 70-200€ ($75-220 US)

Another Scandinavian country on the list, Finland keeps up with its neighbors when it comes to prices.

When it comes to the Nordic countries, Finland is cheaper than Norway, but you can expect the same prices as Sweden.

If you want to see the capital and the Lapland in a week, you’ll probably have to fly, which elevates the cost of your trip. Opting for a night train might be a good trick to save on accommodation and transportation.

An average dish in a mid-range restaurant will cost you 15-20€, which is kind of a standard in Western Europe.

The tax on alcohol is high in Finland, so going out for drinks will be more expensive than you might expect.

Finland budgeting tips

Stay in hostels, as there are some affordable options.

If you visit in summer, the days are long, so you’re not in a rush to see as much as possible before the sun sets.

The average daily cost of travel in Sweden: 70-200€ ($75-220 US)

When it comes to Sweden, most people only visit the capital and move on to cheaper destinations.

While Stockholm is certainly worth the visit, Sweden is a great travel destination for those who enjoy nature.

Eating out is expensive. However, you can go out for lunch instead of dinner and take advantage of lunch deals.

If you want to party, Sweden might not be the right country for that activity. Most clubs have hefty entrance fees, which are outside of most backpackers’ budgets.

Sweden budgeting tips

If you want to save money on transportation, book your trains and buses in advance. The prices increase closer to the departure date.

Get a day pass for public transport if you’re going to use it more than 2 times a day.

The average daily cost of travel in France : 70-180€ ($75-190 US)

While it is possible to travel to France on a budget, it is safe to say that the country is not among the cheapest countries in Europe.

The number one reason why France is expensive to travel to is Paris, often named the most expensive European city.

I’ve lived in Paris, and while the cost of living in Paris is high, I wouldn’t say it’s the most expensive city to visit in Europe if you’re a tourist.

Yes, the accommodation is expensive. We’re talking 50€ a night for hostel dorm rooms in Paris. It is virtually impossible to find a well-rated hotel for under 100€ a night in Paris.

At the same time, if you get outside of the capital, the accommodation prices start to go down.

If you don’t book in advance, the price of train tickets throughout the country can easily match the price of your flight to France.

Eating out is expensive, and so are the drinks.

If you’re dreaming of spending summer in the South of France, it won’t be a cheap beach holiday destination either.

France budgeting tips

You can visit France on a budget if you plan your trip well.

Many monuments and tourist attractions in France are free for EU citizens under 26, including the Louvre!

If you’re backpacking France book train tickets in advance, and you can save up to 70%! Buses are much cheaper than trains, and for short journeys (up to 3 hours) they take almost the same time.

To save money on eating out, book accommodation with a kitchen. If you have one meal outside, have lunch! Lunch menus are much cheaper than dinner.

Get outside of Paris, and discover other French cities like Strasbourg in the east or Bordeaux in the southwest.

Most expensive summer destinations in Europe

As you can see, all the countries on this list are Northern and Western European countries.

So what about the South, what are the most expensive summer destinations in Europe ?

Funnily enough, Southern European countries are generally some of the cheapest countries in Europe.

I know if you’re planning island hopping Cyclades this summer and looking at accommodation prices in Mykonos, you might disagree with me. Also, you’ve probably heard that Dubrovnik is expensive and you should avoid visiting in the summer.

Unlike the countries on this list that are expensive year-round, countries like Greece, Spain, Croatia, and Portugal are some of the best places to backpack in Europe and quite affordable if you avoid visiting in July and August.

At the same time, the South of France will probably always be expensive to visit.

The cost of travel in Europe depends on where you go. While Eastern Europe is one of the most affordable regions to travel to in the world, Western and Northern Europe are some of the most expensive places to travel. However, it is possible to visit Europe on a budget regardless of your itinerary!

Switzerland is generally the most expensive country to visit in Europe. On average, the cost of accommodation, transportation, and food is higher than in other European countries. However, some European capitals, like Paris and London, tend to be as expensive!

Most Expensive Countries to Live In 2024

A country's cost of living is determined by comparing local prices of various goods and services to those in a baseline location, often New York City; however, methodologies vary among organizations.

Switzerland and Iceland are the only two countries that appear on all three different organizations’ lists of the most expensive countries to live in.

The high cost of living in some of the countries is offset by perks. For example, in Norway, these include strong wages, reduced income disparities, and extensive public benefits.

A high cost of living can impact a country's quality of life in many ways. For those on the lower end of the economic scale, such as low-wage workers or retirees on fixed incomes, a high cost of living can make it difficult to keep up with the costs of necessities such as housing, utilities, groceries, clothing, and transportation. Middle- and higher-income individuals fortunate enough to cover the basics without worry still find less left for savings, vacations, their children's education, and retirement. A high cost of living can also make a country less appealing to vacationers and expats, who get less for their money than they might elsewhere.

Computing the cost of living in a given area is typically done by measuring the cost of various goods and services, from rent or mortgage and utilities to groceries and sneakers, then comparing those amounts to the cost of the same goods and services elsewhere. The final number is often given in respect to a baseline location, such as the notoriously pricey New York City. No two lists of expensive countries are identical. Different research organizations use slightly different equations to compute the cost of living, and some include territories that others leave out or get their information from alternate sources. Nonetheless, viewing multiple lists reveals some identifiable trends.

Top 10 Most Expensive Countries to Live In (per month US$) - Living Cost

Top 10 most expensive countries to live in (new york city, usa = 100%) - numbeo.

Many of the most expensive countries in which to live fall into one of two categories. They are either exotic vacation destinations such as Monaco , the Cayman Islands, and Bermuda, or they are located in Northern Europe , as are Switzerland , Iceland , and Norway . The U.K.-controlled island territory Bermuda ranks as the most expensive place to live in two of the three surveys (the third does not track Bermuda), with a Numbeo score of 141.1. Bermuda's capital city of Hamilton is deemed to be one of the most expensive cities in the world, where a 900-square-foot apartment can cost $4,058 per month.

Two other consistently expensive countries are Switzerland, which registers the highest food prices in the European Union , and Iceland, whose remoteness (and the attendant shipping costs) results in much higher prices for consumer goods than in mainland Europe . That said, Iceland has many perks to balance out its high cost of living, one of which is consistently ranking as the world's safest country .

Speaking of perks, Norway appears on two of the lists, but the score does not tell the whole story. Norwegian wages are high, and the disparities in income are much smaller in Norway than in the United States . People in the service industry, education, and areas of the public sector all earn living wages. Furthermore, Norway has a very progressive taxation system that imposes some of the highest taxes in the world but provides free universal health care and free college to its citizens.

Perhaps surprisingly, the United States breaks the top 10 on only one of the three lists. To be sure, the U.S. does have its fair share of expensive places to live—particularly cities such as New York City, San Francisco, and Chicago. However, lower costs in rural areas bring down its nationwide average a bit.

The data and analysis methodologies used by the three organizations—Living Cost, Numbeo, and Global Economy—vary by year collected, factors analyzed, calculation equation used, and countries included.

The Discoverer logo

No matter how you stretch your travel budget, some destination are just unavoidably expensive. As inflation soars across the world, things aren’t getting any more affordable in the world’s most expensive cities. From the glittering skyscrapers of Manhattan to Singapore’s futuristic skyline, you’ll need to break out your credit card to visit these expensive cities.

London, England

Big Ben and Westminster parliament with colorful sky and water reflection.

Visitors flock to London in droves to see Buckingham Palace, attend high tea, catch a glimpse of royalty, and experience British culture at its very best. But it doesn’t come without paying a pretty penny. Transportation is costly with a single, one-way ticket on the Tube at a whopping £6.30 (almost $9) and a taxi ride to the airport typically costing upwards of £56 from Central London. You won’t get away with anything less than $130 a night for a decent hotel room and a good meal will set you back at least £14 a person at a minimum. London’s already inflated price tags are even more of a sticker shock after the price conversion. One bright side for visitors are London’s plentiful free museums and tourist sites like Hyde Park.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik in wintertime.

It’s no secret that Iceland is an expensive destination and the capital city of Reykjavik is no exception. You can chalk high prices up largely to the fact that it’s a remote, island country and everything, from a beer to a bunch of bananas, comes at a premium. Resources for tourists, like accommodation and rental cars, are limited which creates competition and further drives up prices. Hotels and other accommodation across the country are typically very nice, food (and alcohol) is often imported due to Iceland’s short growing season, and while most of the natural sights are free to see, renting a car can come with an exorbitant price tag, especially when you include the cost of gas. If the Land of Fire and Ice is on your bucket list but your budget isn’t big, try visiting in the off season when prices plummet due to the frigid weather.

New York, New York

Aerial of New York City skyline.

As the most costly city in the already pricey United States, New York is the largest metropolis in America – with the prices to match. Like many of the other cities on this list, the Big Apple’s popularity and high demand is the reason behind soaring costs. Pair this with New York's year-round desirability, plus recent inflation, and you can see why a vacation here might set you back a bit. Recent laws against short-term rentals have further driven up hotel costs and while cheap eats like $1 slices of pizza and a streetside hot dog can still be found, restaurant prices are often extremely high. Single attractions like a visit to the Statue of Liberty typically cost around $25 while making your way to the top of the Empire State Building will come in at a whopping $79. Inexpensive attractions like a simple stroll through Central Park or a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, and combined tickets like City Pass, can help bring down costs.

Zurich, Switzerland

Aerial view of Zurich city center with Fraumunster Church and Limmat River.

Zurich frequently tops the EIU’s 2023 list as the most expensive city in the world to live in – and it doesn’t get any cheaper for visitors. For starters, Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries in the world and costs are high across the board from onward travel to food. Expect to pay a minimum of $150 a night for hotels near the city center while even moderately priced accommodation will cost well over $200 a night. Meals at restaurants are where most travelers budgets are really going to feel the heat. Even inexpensive options like pizza will ring in at around $20 a meal per person.

Paris, France

Aerial of Paris, with Eiffel Tower and river.

One of the most expensive elements of a trip to Paris is accommodation cost, which can be well over a thousand dollars a night for a luxury experience in the height of summer. While it is possible to find budget options, especially on the outskirts of the city or in the off-season, you can still expect to spend a minimum of $160 a night for a hotel near the center of town and up to double that in summer. There’s also a high tourist tax applied to the nightly rate. Attractions themselves are pricey with a trip to the Louvre costing €22 and a ticket to the very top of the Eiffel tower coming in at €29.40 . For those that have always dreamt of seeing the City of Light, don’t fret. There are plenty of ways to offset costs and a simple stroll around town is often enough to evoke those feelings of magic.

Singapore financial district skyline.

If you’ve seen Singapore's glamorous parties through the lens of Crazy Rich Asians , it’s probably no surprise to see the Lion City on this list. Singapore shares the No. 1 spot with Zurich for the most expensive city to live in the world. The biggest budget pain point for visitors is accommodation and cost of attractions. A night at the most popular hotel in town, the Marina Bay Sands, will set you back an easy $450 minimum per night while more affordable options are still well into the hundreds per night. Luckily, transportation (aside from taxis) is relatively inexpensive across the city. Cheap meals, with specialties like char kway teow and satay, are easy to track down while other delicacies like Singaporean chilli crab can easily soar to over $100. Popular experiences like the S.E.A. Aquarium cost $35 and up.
