About Temple

The Kollur “Shree Kshethram”, situated in the Udupi Disctrict of Karnataka State, is one among the seven abodes of Salvation, in the creation of Parashurama. The Shree Kshethram is set up by Adi Shankaracharya. This is an abode where the Goddess Shakthi is worshiped.

Devi Mookambike is worshiped here as the Shakthi Devatha. The Monster or troll Kaumhaasura, known as Mooka was put to death in this Kshethra. Mookambike is an Adi Shakthi as the Linga has integrated on it’s left side ” MahaKali”, Maha lakshmi” and Maha Saraswathi”. The Adi Shakthi in this form can be seen only here. In the form of Udhbhavalinga, Mookambike has also integrated Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva on the right side.

A gold Chain is dividing this Jyothirlinga into left and right portion. The left side of the Linga represents the Shakthi and right represents Shiva. Since Devi had appeared in his devine sight during his meditation, Adi Shankara had set up the statue of Devi on “SriChakra Yantra”. Shri Shankaracharya’s Peetha is on the western side of the Sactum Sanctorum of the Temple. Even today the worshiping ritual is being continued as per the Vijayagama system formulated by Adi Shankaracharya.

Every day morning at 5.00 am “Nirmalya Pooja” takes place and during that time the Devotees have an opportunity to see the Swayambhoo Lingam. Every day Trikala Pooja is performed in the Temple. Thousands of devotees visit the temple to find solace, from their problems, pains and difficulties or to dedicate their religious vows or to enjoy the natural scenic beauty of the environment. Thousands of devotees from various states are visiting the Shree Kshethra on every Tuesday, Friday, and during the month of Shravana or on the Moola Nakshathra day of the months of Phalguna (Which is the birthday of Shree Devi) Important Politicians (Representatives of People) Film Stars, major Industrialists etc are visiting this Temple regularly. The famous singer Mr. Jesudas is performs Chandika Homa seva and “darshan” of Devi, every year on his birthday. The Temple celebrates all traditional Hindu Festivals and during the days of Navarathri Festival the visits of the Devotees reaches the peak.

“D. Ella Vyalle” has written that being the abode of Mookambike, Kollur has become one of the important pilgrimage Centre. This place is very sacred and devotees from within and outside the Nation are visiting this place on pilgrimage and perform penance and other religious worships and return with protected feelings. About 50% of the devotees visiting this Temple are from Kerala and 25% are from Tamilnadu and 25% are from Karnataka. Devotees from Andhra and Maharashtra are also visiting the Temple.

The Temple is undertaking major social works. Many Highschools and Pre-University Colleges are maintained by the Temple around Kollur. Good lodges and Parks are set up for the benefit and comforts of the Devotees visiting the Temple.

Temple History

As per ancient Scriptures and inscriptions, along with other proofs found in the locality, it is clear that the Kollur Mookambika Temple has been an abode of Devi Shakthi’s worship for centuries. In an ancient inscription (dated 1481 A D) found here, the source of the Shakthi has been described. Shree Mookambika Devi in the form of Linga is the Adi Shakthi, the Creator and the protector of all forms of life.

Many of the local Kings have given lots of donations to this Temple. Prominent among them are the Kings of the “Keladi Dynasty”. They have been offering a variety of worships to the Goddess. Prominent Kings of the Keladi Dynasty, Sankanna Nayaka and Shivappa Nayaka had renovated the Temple and gave donations for the maintenance of the Temple. The Kings of Keladi Nayak Dynasty had believed that the Goddess is the symbol of victory. As such whenever they would win a war or drive away their enemies they were devoting the victory and celebrating it before the Goddess.

Kolluru or Kollur is a tiny hamlet situated about 40 km from Kundapur Town in Karnataka State in the southern part of India. Kollur is situated at the base of the Kodachadri Peak in Western Ghats of Udupi district. This place is famous for the Mookambika temple, a Hindu pilgrim centre about 135 km away from Mangalore City.

Kollur is believed to be one of the seven pilgrim centres formed by the great Parashurama, said to be the sixth avatar of Vishnu as per Hindu mythology, in the name of goddess Parvati. Situated on the banks river Sauparnika, Kollur is regarded as one of the Seven Muktistala (place for attaining salvation) pilgrimage centres in Karnataka. Kollur attracts lot of pilgrims from Tamilnadu and other parts of Karnataka.

There are two rivers Agnithirtha and Sauparnika that descend from Kodachadri hills. The cold spring of water that is situated in between the temples of Kalabhairava and Umamaheshwara is said to be the source of river Sauparnika. The tale behind the name of the river is interesting. Legend says that Suparna (Garuda) did penance in the name of Goddess on the banks of this river in order make his mother Vinutha get rid of her sorrows. When the Goddess appeared before him, he prayed that the river be known after him as Sauparnika. You can find a small cave even today at the place where garuda is said to have performed penance and the cave is known as "Garuda's Cave". This holy river takes birth at the Kodachadri and flows up to the edge of Anthargami (now oluru) region where two more streams called Bhrungisha and Pippalada join it. Then it flows westward, surrounding Kollur in the name of "Sampara", and proceeds to join the sea near the temple of "Maharaja Swami" (Varaha swami) at Maravanthe. It is believed that river, during the course of its flow absorbs the elements of 64 different medicinal plants and roots and therefore it cures all the diseases of those who bathe in it.

Apart from being a popular pilgrim centre, Kollur is also known for having the oldest and the deepest gold mines in the country. The Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to the endangered lion tail monkey, is just a few kilometres away. The nearest towns and cities to Kollur are Shimoga (135 kms to 175 kms), Udupi (85 kms), Hosanagara (60 kms), Mangalore (135 kms) etc.,

The railway station nearest to the Mookambika Temple is Byndoor Road. But if you want to visit all the places of interest in the region, it is better to kick off your tour from Udupi and Murudeshwar, and later travel to the Mookambika Temple. Chalk out your itinerary in such a way that you reach Udupi early in the morning.

Udupi to Murudeshwar After alighting at the Udupi railway station, hail an autorickshaw and head to the famous Sree Krishna Temple. First take a room on rent and freshen up before paying obeisance at the temple. Rooms are available for Rs 400 and upwards. After offering prayers at the temple, you can straight away go to Murudeshwar.

It would take close to three hours to reach Murudeshwar from Udupi by bus and make sure to reach Murudeshwar before 3pm. If you can’t get a direct bus, board a bus to Bhatkal and from there travel to Murudeshwar. You can also board a bus running service on the Udupi-Mangaluru-Goa route to reach Murudeshwar. The bus ticket fare is below Rs 100.

The Murudeshwar Temple opens its gates to welcome devotees at 3pm. You can keep your bags in the cloak room and offer prayers at the temple, which is not usually teeming with pilgrims. After visiting the Murudeshwar Temple, you can leave for the Mookambika Temple by bus via Byndoor.

Rooms are aplenty in Mookambika and you can take ample rest overnight in one of the hotels. Wake up early in the morning to have a ‘darshan’ of the goddess.

Spiritual ambience envelops temple The Mookambika Temple is located at the center of the Kollur village. The devotees enter the east-facing temple through the eastern side of the holy place. A huge golden flagstaff and a ‘deepastambam’ (holy post holding many lamps), which is as big as the golden flagstaff, would greet you as you enter the temple.

sri mookambika tourist home ooty

The golden flagstaff has been built following the Kannada style of architecture and the ‘deepastambam’ has a Stamba Ganapathy on it. The sanctum sanctorum of Subramania Swamy along with the ‘nagas’ (serpent gods) is facing west in the south-eastern side of the temple.

The main deity of the temple is ‘Swayambhu linga’ with a golden line dividing it into two equal parts. It is believed that the divine forms of Mahakali, Mahalaksmi and Mahasaraswati are on the right side of the idol and the ‘Trimurtis’ on the left side.

The ‘panchaloha’ idol of goddess, which was consecrated by Adi Shankara, is placed behind ‘Swayambhu linga’. Besides the idol of goddess, the idols of five-faced Ganapathy, Subramanian, Hanuman, Maha Vishnu and Veerabhadran are also installed inside the sanctum sanctorum.

The temple is surrounded by mountains on four sides and cocooned inside a 12ft tall boundary wall known as ‘Aanapalla mathil’ (elephant belly wall). Two two-storey ‘gokuparams’ (ornate towers) literally stand tall on the eastern and western sides of the place of worship. A small shrine, which is near the lodging facilities for the temple priests on the south-eastern region, is dedicated to the Valampiri Ganapathy. It is believed that goddess Mookambika would come to Kerala if devotees from that state don’t offer prayers at the temple. But that day won’t come for sure.

After paying obeisance at the Mookambika Temple, one could head to the pristine Kudajadri. Though the jeep service from Mookambika to Kudajadri is available till 2.30pm, make sure to start the journey by 12 noon. The jeep will reach Kudajadri by evening and the fare per person nearly Rs 500. Kudajadri looks mesmerizing in the evening with the sunlight fading away and the floating mist taking center stage. The Shankaracharya’s ‘jnanapeeda’ and its surrounding vistas are ethereal. You can return to Mookambika by 7pm.

You can be part of the temple’s evening rituals like ‘seeveli’ (ceremonial parade around the temple) and enjoy the magic with lamps. You can leave Mookambika early in the morning after an overnight stay by boarding a bus to Byndoor and catching a train to Kerala from there.

Want to just visit Mookambika temple If you want to just offer prayers at the Mookambika Temple, get down at the Byndoor railway station, which is 30km away from the revered place of worship. You can either hail a ‘share taxi’ or board a bus from Byndoor to reach the temple. The travel time from Byndoor to Mookambika is close to one hour.
