I can wholeheartedly admit to being biased in favor of my adopted country, but, Spain is a great travel destination for any type of traveler, any time of year. However, those in the know love to see Spain in all of its glory in springtime.

Although most of Spain sees a short, mild winter with full days of sunshine, when spring hits, you’d think the whole country had just been awaken from a long, frost-covered hibernation period. Once the days get longer and the sun is stronger, there is a noticeable energy that pulsates throughout the Iberian Peninsula.

Spain really is a year-round travel destination, but if you can swing it, try to come around late March, April and May. That’s when local festivals spring up, easter week brings beautiful processions around the country, and well, sorry for the cliché, but the country just blossoms.

Although the country’s train system isn’t as developed as it should be, in my opinion, it’s still one of the best ways to travel through Spain as well as Europe. One of the great things about the Rail Planner app is that it works offline so you can see timetables for trains wherever you are. Available for purchase at the App Store and Google Play .

MSW Surf Forecast : The Magic Seaweed app shows you what to expect on the beach. Although the app is primarily for surfers, beach goers will benefit from the wave, wind and swell reports, too. Bonus points: The MagicSeaweed surf app works for destinations around the world. If you’re headed out of the bustling city for Spain’s calm coastal waters, this app has information on more than 3400 beaches in Spain. Available for purchase at the App Store and Google Play .

Spanish travel apps for language, weather, staying safe and currency exchange

SpanishDict Translator is going to be useful, no matter what part of Spain you’re planning to visit. Moving to teach English in Spain but don't speak a lick of the local language? Don't worry, there's an app for that. Not sure how to get around the new city you'll be living in, or where to grocery shop and find dinner? You guessed it, there's an app for that too! These days, mobile apps are making our lives that much easier; there's virtually an app for almost everything! Whether you're vacationing in Spain for an extended period of time, or teaching English there indefinitely, here are some of the most popular apps in Spain to have on your phone.

Best Spain Travel Apps

This Android and iOS app isn’t specific to Spain, but to rail travel throughout all of Europe. It's probably one of the best Spain train apps out there too. It will allow you to visit popular destinations like Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and Granada for a mini weekend getaway, or even venture into France or the rest of Europe! The great thing about the Rail Planner app is that it allows you to look up train information, no matter where you are. It works offline and gives you quick access to departure and arrival times for trains. The app will also allow you to make e-ticket reservations, find train stations near you, and look up departure and arrival information for every station

Missed the last bus? No worries, the Free Now app can help you book a taxi within minutes from wherever you are. A popular Spain travel app, it works very similarly to the Uber app – simply put in your location, and the next available taxi will be notified to pick you up. Like Uber, you can track where the taxi is in real-time on its route. Payments are also accepted directly through the app. Available on Android and iOS .

While Uber is not allowed to operate in Barcelona, the ride-sharing service does operate in Madrid .

Metro de Madrid Official (Madrid Only)

This app allows you to immediately find or plan the fastest way to get from your location to your destination via train. The Android and iOS apps provide you with an up-to-date map of the whole Madrid Metro network, a map with main points of tourist interests in the city, as well as information on train lines, transfer stations, and any line disruptions.

EMT (Madrid Only)

Although a majority of locals and tourists alike prefer to use the Metro, there are many people that opt to use Madrid’s bus network. The EMT app is a popular Spain bus app in Madrid that will help you locate when your bus is coming, and what bus route you should take to get to your destination. Available for both Android and iOS .

BiciMAD (Madrid Only)

What better way to check out your new city than on two wheels? BiciMAD is Madrid’s bike-sharing system and is available to you on both Android and iOS in both Spanish and English. The app will let you know where you can pick up the card that allows you to enjoy this service, as well as where the nearest bike station is to you. The in-built GPS also maps your biking route, distance, the speed you are riding at, as well as calories burned.

TMB (Barcelona Only)

This is Barcelona’s official public transport app for both the train and bus networks. The TMB app will allow you to map out which bus/train will get you to your destination in the shortest time. You can create an account for a more personalized service such as status updates on your regular routes, etc.

Bicing (Barcelona Only)

A little different to your typical bicycle, the Bicing ride-share program provides you with a bike that has an electric motor to assist in your pedaling. If you stop pedaling, the engine stops and the bike will stop moving. There are 41 Bicing stations around Barcelona, but you will need to register for a subscriber card before you can start using this service.

Don’t speak a lick of Spanish, no problems! The Spanish Dictionary app is here to help. While English is spoken in most cities, this will definitely still come in handy. Having a lazy night in, already in your pajamas, and realize your fridge is empty? Don’t worry, the Just Eat app is here to save the day (or night)! Similar to GrubHub, Seamless, and UberEats, Just Eats has access to food from over 4,000 restaurants in Spain. Simply choose which restaurant you want food from, select the menu items you want, and your food will be delivered to your door.

This iOS app is for the beach lover in all of us. If you’re venturing out of the city for a relaxing beach weekend along Spain’s calm, coastal waters, then this is the app for you. You’ll find more than 3,400 beaches, see information and weather forecasts for each, photos, and a convenient save option for future reference.

This is a clean, basic app that makes learning fun. With its game-like lessons, you will earn points, race against the clock, and move up levels as your Spanish improves. Available on Android and iOS , Duolingo is the world’s most popular way to learn Spanish online. Whether you’re a beginner starting with the basics, or looking to practice your reading, writing, and speaking, Duolingo is scientifically proven to work.

Similar to the OfferUp app here in the US, Wallapop is basically like a localized e-Bay where you can search for used items, and perhaps find a killer deal. The app is geo-location based to allow you to search for sale items within as little as a 1-kilometer radius from you. You’ll find anything from electronics and furniture, to luggage and sunglasses. Definitely a cheaper way to furnish your new apartment when you move over.

Meetup helps people do more of what they love by finding and creating communities based on the ideas and activities that matter to them. You can browse a variety of gatherings happening in your new city, from yoga challenges, multicultural volleyball, and salsa nights, to hiking and language exchange groups. The Meetup app will let you easily see what is going on around you and join the group to find out more details. Get out there and mingle with the locals, and who knows, you might just find your new BFF.

Similar to Postmates in the US, Glovo is another popular app in Spain. It is an on-demand, local delivery service that promises to fetch whatever you want within your city and deliver it to you within an hour. Orders such as food from boutique restaurants that don’t offer delivery, high street department store products, late-night pharmacy needs, and alcohol, are all common requests. Not bad considering the Glovo app has a flat delivery fee of only €5.50 with no markup on the price of the products purchased.

Madrid's market scene is having a moment. Besides all the permanent food markets around the city, pop-up markets specializing in everything from crafts and antiques to food trucks and holiday treats rule the Spanish capital. Some run on a once-a-month schedule or happen yearly; the famous Rastro happens each Sunday, while the San Anton market is open seven days a week. Madrid is all about electric vehicles, so travelers with a valid driver's license can use ride-sharing apps to find electric vehicles ranging from cars to bikes and scooters. There's Car2Go for smart cars, which are ideal for solo travelers or groups of two, or emov , which provides larger cars that can accommodate three or four people.

Travelers can also pick up an electric motorcycle with eCooltra , or use BiciMad for access to the city's electric bike-sharing system. Lime scooters are also growing in popularly. 1 Map Apps For its blanket coverage of cities, towns and villages, we have to recommend the obvious which is Google Maps . It’s perfect for those moments when you need to get from the hotel to the restaurant or monument without taking out a map – it’s also brilliant when you don’t know the street where the monument is located – you can still tap in the name of the museum and be taken there directly. But for Barcelona and Madrid you have the even better Citymapper (pictured above) that covers all transport options and even tells you how much you need to pay for the bus fare which is great when you don’t think you’ll understand the bus driver in Spanish!

2 Travel Inspiration Apps We often hit the Pinterest App when we are out and about exploring new parts in Spain. It’s perfect for getting a sense of the landscapes and surroundings and also invaluable for food ideas. If you don’t believe us – just open it up now in the App, tap in Cantabria and you’ll find a treasure trove of inspiring images . Instagram is another great source for wanderlust moments and getting a sense for where you are travelling to also!

3 Currency Apps Picture the situation – you are in a ceramics workshop and want to purchase Christmas gifts for the family and have them shipped home. The only problem is you can’t for the life of you remember what the exchange rate is from Canadian dollars to Euro. We’ve been using the XE Currency website since it first appeared and find the App really handy when you are on the go. We love that it works offline – just open it every couple of days when you have access to wi-fi to make sure you are getting the latest rate.

The Fork App (which is branded as El Tenedor in Spain) is extremely handy for booking tables without having to speak Spanish

4 Food Apps Now under the TripAdvisor umbrella, we’ve been raving about El Tenedor/The Fork website for years. You can read our blogpost about it here . Pro-tip: It’s a really useful way of finding and booking tables without having to speak Spanish. Unfortunately, the App doesn’t allow for you to select options such as vegetarian, celiac etc, you’ll have to use the website for those special requirements. Of course, Tripadvisor ‘s main app is also great for checking out reviews although don’t forget to ask around when you get to Spain as well. You can’t beat a local’s recommendations so do try to check places with the hotel concierge too.

WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in Spain. If you don’t already use it, download it before travelling to Spain. You’ll thank us for it!

It’s great for texting, making phone calls, sending voicemails, and sending videos and photos and you can even use it on your desktop as long as your mobile phone is nearby.

6 WiFi Apps You need wifi to be able to use a lot of the Apps and one handy way to makes sure you’ll be covered is to download the Free WiFi Finder app. Before you set out for the day, make sure you make a mental note or take a photo of the free WiFi points you’ll be passing by. Of course, you may choose to get a plan to cover your wifi usage when in Spain. And there is also the option of getting a mobile wifi device – we’ve covered some of these options in our post here .

8 Weather Apps El Tiempo is one of the more popular weather Apps in Spain – we like it because it gives a fairly reliable 14-day forecast. The Spanish Met Service, AEMET , also has an App which is great but as you’d expect, it’s in Spanish. That said, there’s enough symbols that you’ll be able to tell whether it’s going to sun, rain or snow.

9 Reading Apps

If you’re travelling for a few weeks and don’t have or want to bring your Kindle , we recommend adding the Kindle App to your phone or tablet and purchasing a few inspiring and practical publications. It’s the lightest way to read guide books and fiction while on the move. Try to research and upload your novels, reference items and guide books a few days before you depart so you can get in the mood before you hit the plane!

Did you know that your Kindle has it’s own email address and that you can email almost any document to your Kindle for access later? Check out how to do it here – it’s very easy and useful. Putting the word ‘CONVERT’ into the subject line of the email will command Kindle to convert your attached document into Kindle format.

Download museum Apps the night before you visit to prepare your visit, pre-book guided tours and take self-guided tours of the key pieces. We like this one from the Lazaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid – that features this lovely piece by Goya…

10 Museum Apps We adore some of the Spanish museum Apps although you do need to pay for some Apps such as the Prado one. Others are free, such as The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum App that offers 8 different guided tours of its paintings, although some info is only available in Spanish. Many of the smaller museums are worth checking out on the App Store . We enjoy the Lazaro-Galdiano Museum App (free) that offers a guided tour in English with or without subtitles – always handy for getting around museums discreetly and especially useful for those with visual impairments. We find ourselves downloading the Apps before we go (the night before) so as to absorb some of the information in advance. We also like to look at them after a visit – to remind ourselves of the key pieces and talk about our favourites – a great way to enjoy the works as we unwind after a busy day.

11 Itinerary Planning Apps No, we’re not about to recommend something that will replace us – but we do think that some itinerary management Apps such as TripIt can be a handy way to store all the small details of every trip before you leave home. As you know, we send a very detailed pack in the mail when our clients book with us, which is great for reading over and getting a sense of the places you are going to be visiting. But those of you who like to travel light might be interested in transferring some of the info into an App such as TripIt. You can add in your flights, the time and location for your tours, museum visits, restaurant bookings, car hire pick-up points and any other elements of your trip. When it’s all punched in, TripIt gives you a great visual of your day as well as holding all those important bits of info. You can upgrade to receive suggestions of the best seats on the plane and other handy titbits that can streamline your trip even more.

Google Translate is an amazing tool for translations on the fly!

12 Translation Apps Spanish to English is a pretty common translation combination so you’ll find lots of different apps to cater for this market although we have to say that we are fans of Google Translate . It’s perfect for those moments when you are sitting in front of a menu in a language you don’t understand and haven’t a clue what is on offer. All you need to do is hold your phone or tablet over the text you want to translate and up pops the translation! We also like it when we are in the hotel room and haven’t a clue what time breakfast is served at. Rather than phone downstairs and ask, just flash the App in front of the housekeeping information and you’ll get all the info you need. You will need a wifi connection or coverage for it to work. Another App worth downloading if you don’t have it already is Skype which now has a translation service that is handy if you need to communicate with somebody in Spanish.

Spain’s tourism offices are wonderful sources of info and many have apps that save you queuing up!

13 Tourism Office Apps We love nosing around tourist offices and picking up flyers and brochures but if you don’t enjoy the thought of it or want some advice outside office hours, you should check out the tourism office Apps for the cities you are travelling to. We love the Barcelona Turisme City’s App (pictured above) that lists the Top 20 Sights to See with opening times, photos and detailed info about each place. Most of the major cities’ tourist offices now have Apps – and are well worth downloading before you travel. So what are you waiting for?

Unfortunately, sorting through the logistics of simply ( or not so simply ) getting around can feel a bit cumbersome, but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

You might be asking, Is there Uber in Spain? What about DoorDash® ? The short answer i s ... kind of . Spain has a lot of great, user-friendly apps to help you navigate the country and more but differ slightly from what you might be used to in the United States.

Apps to Use in Spain

During your study abroad program , keep in mind some of these most popular apps in Spain – they will make your travels, food explorations, social environment, and overall experience in this wonderful country that much easier. Whether you choose to study abroad in Barcelona, Madrid, Alicante, Alcala de Henares, Seville, or Palma de Mallorca, these travel apps for Spain will certainly help you navigate the city.

App #1: Cabify

If you’re looking to get around cities in Spain, like Madrid , Barcelona , and Seville , Cabify is your best option. Although the country does have Uber, it’s not widely used as Cabify. Other than the use of kilometers instead of miles, the app is very similar to Uber or Lyft.

Simply open the Cabify app, plug in your location, and an estimated pick-up wait time will appear. You can even get ahead of the game and reserve a pick-up in advance by entering your future time and location. You’ll know the price of your desired trip ahead of time and have the option to decide what kind of car you want.

The Omio app has access to it all: bus and train routes, ferries, flights, and even airport transfers. It’s so simple to use it’s no surprise that Omio is considered the go-to app for travelers in Spain.

While in the app, enter your current location and the future location you’d like to travel to, including important details like specific time and day, and Omio will populate several different travel options, including pricing, so you can compare all the possibilities.

After deciding what route makes the most sense, you can download your tickets right through the app to show your driver or ticket service. No printer required.

Traveling throughout Spain and Europe will be a breeze with Omio.

App #3: Ryanair

Easily accessing and booking flights throughout Europe is straightforward and convenient with the Ryanair app.

With its relatively affordable flight prices, simply pick your destination and preferred airport, enter in the important details like dates and times that work best for you, and voilá (or should we say, ¡ ya esta! ) , Ryanair will populate different flight options for you to choose from.

App #4: Glovo

While the country does have recognizable apps like Uber Eats, they aren’t as commonly used as they are in the U.S. Instead, the country uses Glovo - the most downloaded food delivery app in Spain in 2022.

Glovo partners with popular spots in Spain, including McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King, Goiko, TGB, and La Tagliatella, to deliver easy and delicious food right to your doorstep. And the app delivers more than just food! Click for groceries, pharmacies, and even other shops. Heavily used in the Glovo app, Glovo Market and Supermercado DIA are the top grocery markets in Spain.

In the app, simply pick a restaurant, or store of choice, order your items, pay through the app, and receive an estimated wait time for your delivery. Promising fast delivery and a convenient way to explore nearby restaurants, Glovo is one of the best food delivery apps in Spain. (We’re getting hungry just writing about it.)

App #5: WhatsApp

While co mmon apps in the U.S., like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter, are used universally, WhatsApp is considered the most popular social media app in Spain.

WhatsApp is an internationally available messaging platform that also includes a calling feature to help you stay connected with others.

It’s also a recommended download because U.S. mobile carriers typically charge a hefty fee for international text messaging. But with WhatsApp, you can stay in touch with your family and friends, new and old, for free. Make sure those you want to stay connected with also have the app.

As easy as sending a conventional text message, you’ll open the WhatsApp app, click the chat or call feature, choose a contact to send your message to, and begin drafting with the green circle that populates. That’s it.

I've lived in Catalonia for 8 years. There are 5 things tourists should know before traveling to this part of Spain.

Even those who have visited the regional capital, Barcelona , might have missed what makes Spain's second most populated region different from the rest of the country.

I wasn't prepared when, in 2016, I moved to Catalonia from Madrid with my then-partner and our 18-month-old son. As foreigners in Spain , Madrid was getting expensive, and we were thinking about a second baby. The greenery and clean air of Girona appealed as much as the lower rent we found on a two-bedroom apartment at that time.

We moved two months later, but it took me a while to realize that we hadn't just left Madrid. In many ways, we'd left Spain.

1. The main language in Catalonia is Catalan

Although Spanish is the most common language and almost everyone is bilingual, Catalan is the main language outside Barcelona.

2. The paella looks different

Despite not being a seafood fan, I love paella because I can just pick out the prawns and mussels. Until I got to Catalonia and discovered that the yellow rice with seafood, vegetables, and chicken or rabbit is Valencia style. Catalan paella is dark brown in color, much more seafood heavy, and never contains vegetables.

There's also the Catalan version of paella made with short noodles (fideua) and served with aioli (garlic mayo) or the dramatic squid ink dish (arroz negro). My children call it Halloween Rice because it stains their teeth, tongues, and everything else, black.

3. You'll want to branch out into Catalan wines

Many people think of rioja when they think of Spanish wine . While I can certainly drink wines from La Rioja in Catalonia, the waiter is much friendlier if I ask for Catalan wines. An award-winning local sommelier once told me rioja is only famous because it was the favorite wine of Franco, the Spanish dictator who ruled from 1938 to 1975.

Whether that's the real reason or not, local is king, so you'll be recommended wine from the Penedès if you're in Barcelona, from Priorat in Tarragona, and from the L'Empordà in Girona. And, of course, Catalonia is also home to Cava — Spain's sparkling wine similar to Champagne.

4. There are many traditions unique to Catalonia

After moving, I was surprised to find everything closed on September 11 for Catalonia's national day. In the post 9/11 world, the date can be jarring, but it's been celebrated since 1886.

As a family, we have incorporated local traditions like the gift-pooping log at Christmas, Caga Tió, but I've given up any ideas about flamenco. People here love the Sardana — a dance so sedate I initially thought they were just warming up as they slowly moved in a big circle, alternately tapping their feet in front of them. But, what's beautiful about it is how everyone, young to old, participates.

Human towers, another Catalan tradition, are much more exciting to watch and deserve their listing as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. But I'm glad that, so far, unlike some of their classmates, my two boys haven't asked to join the neighborhood "Colla" group, climbing on the shoulders of several tiers of people to the peak.

5. Catalans tell the time differently

One thing I still struggle with is the Catalan system of telling the time. It's expressed as fractions but in a different way to Spanish. So 4:15 is "un quart de cinc" (one quarter of five); 4:30 is "dos quarts de cinc." Even when you see it written down you still have to try and remember if the quarters are after or before the hour. My brain just can't do the math, even though I understand the words.

This Country Has the Most Clean Beaches in the World — and They're All Gorgeous

Go ahead, take a dip in Spain.

Next time you need an excuse to go on a beach vacation, just remember that the very act of being around water is scientifically proven to be good for you. As a paper published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology reported, just looking at a body of water can make you feel more relaxed and actually lower both your heart rate and your blood pressure. And while just about any body of water has the power to put your mind at ease for your next waterside getaway, why not visit some of the cleanest beaches on Earth?

The easiest way to find these beaches is to check out all the Blue Flag beaches of the world, a designation awarded to beaches, marinas, and tourism boats that qualify via "a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria," which must be met and maintained to keep the flag.

The organization keeps meticulous public records of all the sites around the world that have earned the designation. While you can find them just about everywhere, Spain is home to the most blue flags, with 748 sites boasting the designation, including 639 beaches.

The beaches include the natural pools of El Caletón on the island of Tenerife, a lava beach lined with massive cliffs that make for a spectacular Instagram backdrop. There's also the more subdued Cortadura beach in the ancient port city of Cadiz, made up of soft, golden sand dunes. Here, families will find plenty of amenities, including bathrooms, showers, and concession stands, to ensure a fun-filled day.

On the island of Mallorca, travelers will also find the Cala de Sant Vicenç , a beach consisting of three smaller coves, allowing everyone to find a little peace and tranquility as they swim in the azure waters. In Barcelona, travelers can visit Sant Sebastià, one of the city's oldest and "most traditional beaches," according to Barcelona's tourism page. It was among the first along the shoreline to have bathing amenities and now includes plenty of hotels and restaurants lining the sand, which means you can find the perfect place to eat and stay over so you can do it all again tomorrow.

10 Apps That Will Make The Most Of Your Vacation In 2024

I f you've ever spent time at a networking event, made small talk at your kids' soccer games, or scrolled through a dating app, you'll know that "travel" is something almost everyone will tell you they enjoy. Couple that with an attachment to our smartphones that borders on co-dependent, and it's no surprise to learn that travel apps are a hot commodity. Some of the best innovations in travel come in the form of apps. Staying in touch with people at home, travel planning, staying organized on the road, or connecting with other travelers? Not only is there an app for that, there are many apps for that.

To help you sort through the plethora of what's out there, here are some travel-ready apps to make your vacation a blast. We've sourced suggestions from people who travel for a living and those who leave their local area only rarely, so no matter how often you jet-set, there is an app for you.

If your cell plan doesn't include international roaming, you can get slammed with steep fees for using mobile data outside your own country.

There are a few ways to get around roaming charges, including buying a local SIM card for the country you are traveling in, using a Wi-Fi stick , or investing in a dual SIM phone, like those from Samsung, Apple, or Google. One of the easiest and cheapest options though, is an eSIM app like Airalo . Airalo was one of the first in the eSIM game and continues to be popular with travelers. Fans of the app point to how easy it is to download and get started quickly, and how much it saves in fees. On the other hand, some users have noticed a discrepancy in how well it works in different countries. One reviewer on TrustPilot states "We do NOT recommend this plan given the extremely poor performance in Vietnam" despite noting excellent service in Hong Kong.

Airalo is a paid service, available on the App Store and on Google Play.

Google Maps is often the default app travelers reach for when navigating new territory. It's a trusted resource for a lot of reasons, including the ease of finding reviews and info for even very small businesses. But it's not the only map app out there, nor is it the best in every situation. The main advantage of Maps.me over Google Maps is that it is based on user-generated information. Particularly for folks who are getting around on foot, this "boots on the ground" approach is excellent and more direct than reporting problems to Google Maps . It also means that if you find a cool place on your travels and want to make sure other travelers can find it, you can add it to a map.

Like Google Maps and other useful way-finding apps, you can download maps and bookmark points of interest for offline use, although the background information on locations is not as robust as on Google Maps. Maps.me also allows you to access various modes of transportation while offline, which Google doesn't.

Maps.me is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Cash's position as king is increasingly precarious. On your travels, you'll find cashless options in places you might not expect. The mass availability of mobile payment platforms like Square means you may be able to whip out your phone or card at Swiss coffee carts or Mexican street vendors. Wise (formerly Transferwise) lets you move between currencies seamlessly. Wise lets you operate in 40 currencies, which is particularly handy if you are traveling to several different countries. They advertise charges that are less than the major banks. However, some users have complained about complications with money transfers, so be forewarned if you intend to use this app for sending money.

Of note to travelers is the option to get an actual bank card that can function as an international debit card with a nominal conversion fee (not all bank cards can pay by debit in countries other than your home base.) Or, save a step and scan your phone to pay from your Wise account.

Wise is available on the App Store and from Google Play. There is no charge to download the app, but fees are charged for some banking activities.

If you are going to be traveling from place to place on your vacation, you will want the Rome2Rio app on your phone. Enter your destination and departure location, and the app spits out the options and approximate costs for each leg of your journey. For instance, if you are in Edmonton, Canada, and want to get to the Thai island of Ko Yao Yai, the app will suggest six options, labeling the best, cheapest, and fastest combination of flight, minibus, and ferry. You can't purchase tickets through the app, although there are links to book accommodation that take you to Booking.com. Being able to purchase travel fares through the app would make things easier, especially if they were offered in a package, but the absence of that feature means you can investigate and compare prices from different booking operators , so we are putting it in the win column.

Rome2Rio is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Rick Steves Audio Europe

Rick Steves is recognized as a top voice in travel guides. His down-to-earth approach to travel has endeared multitudes of followers to him, spawning an industry of books, television shows, and a sprawling web presence that features how-to guides, articles, and an active travelers' forum. On top of all that, he has a free app for self-guided walking tours through many of Europe's top sights called Rick Steves Audio Europe . Reviewers of the app give it a high rating (4.7 on Google Play and 4.3 on the App Store) using superlatives like "This app is GOLD," and comparing the quality of the tours to paid audio tours. On the downside, it is difficult to sync the app on multiple devices, so if you are in a group you may all be at slightly different parts of the tour, which can be mildly annoying. There are a bunch of tour sites, with more added periodically.

The audio tours and accompanying maps are downloadable, so you don't need to worry about burning through mobile data or needing to rely on Wi-Fi. Rick Steve Audio Europe is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

How many trips come vividly back to life in your mind just by thinking about that one excellent bowl of Cacio e Pepe pasta or sun-drenched sip of a Paloma? Exploring a place through its flavors and discovering new spots to eat is a beloved part of travel. In Europe, TheFork (the French version is called LaForchette) is the go-to app for crowd-sourced restaurant reviews. Previously, the app also covered Australia, but at the start of 2024, it was announced they will be pulling out of Oz.

You can find Michelin-starred restaurants with months-long wait lists or little hole-in-the-wall spots by searching the name of the eating establishment, the city or neighborhood you want to eat in, or the kind of cuisine you are craving.

The app is worthy of its space on your phone just for the restaurant listings and reviews, but if you want to explore more of the capabilities, there are ways to expand its usefulness. You can make reservations, register to collect points, access discounts and specials at select spots, and pay through the app. TheFork is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Looking for a little love on the road? The Fairytrail app might be the ticket to romance (or ROAMance) you are looking for. Aimed at digital nomads and van life devotees, the app is a nice addition to the dating lives of travelers of all stripes. Because the app is focused on people with nomadic lifestyles, matches are location-independent. The idea is that users of the app will be willing to travel to each other to meet and date. There is a setting that allows an extra layer of matching: dream places to visit. If you so choose, before chatting with a match you need to have an overlapping "bucket-list" destination. Previously, this was an unavoidable step but became an optional setting after it was changed in response to frustration expressed by reviewers. The app is being redesigned in 2024 and soliciting feedback from users. Stay tuned, it seems more happy endings are in store! Price Scanner And Converter

A very unpleasant aspect of vacationing in another country is coming home to a shocking credit card bill. Part of the problem is the tendency of holidaymakers to spend like money isn't real, but the other problem is how difficult it is to calculate prices into your own currency. Sure, you can come up with shortcuts to do quick math, but that gives you an estimate rather than an exact cost. To help, there are many different currency converter apps out there, with features like real-time rate calculation and offline capability. The somewhat clunky-named Price Scanner and Converter takes it one step further by using your phone's camera to scan prices and display them automatically in your preferred currency (out of 150 global currencies.) New iPhone cameras also have a similar capability, but it isn't as seamless a process as using this app.

This price scanning app isn't presently available on Google Play, although there are similar apps to be found. The reviews are pretty overwhelmingly mediocre, so if you are on team Android, your best bet may be to download a regular currency converter and enter in prices the old-fashioned way.

Searching through your emails for confirmations and itineraries isn't an efficient way to access your travel information. And good luck if you have used your work email for some of your planning and your personal email for others. What if you are offline when you need to find your tour details? Nightmare fuel. Tripit has created a simple user experience, allowing you to forward all those endless travel planning emails to be arranged into an easily accessible itinerary in a single spot, which you can access from any of your devices.

Other features of this include the ability to load PDFs, QR codes, and other travel documents to your Tripit travel folder. There are helpful navigation tools, like airport maps, neighborhood safety ratings, and nearby places. You can share your travel plans and sync them to your calendar. For $49 a year (or a free 30-day trial) you can upgrade to Tripit Pro for enhanced travel aid, including notifications to help keep you on track and on time.

Tripit is free to download from the App Store and from Google Play, and you can upgrade to the premium Tripit Pro on the Tripit website or in the app.

Mobile Passport Control

The latest app from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol goes by the wildly creative name, " Mobile Passport Control ." It's a no-nonsense app with a no-nonsense name that allows users to streamline the customs experience. Rather than filling out declarations forms, users enter their information into the app and send it to border officials so they can access it as soon as they get to customs. You can do this immediately upon arrival, say as your plane is taxiing to the gate.

The app is for United States citizens and Canadians with a B-1 or B-2 visitor visa who are entering the USA at one of 33 American airports, 11 preclearance sites, and four seaports. It works in tandem with your passport, but it doesn't replace it.

As a bonus, some sites allow those with the Mobile Passport Control app to use their own (almost always shorter!) line or expedited Global Entry lines at passport control. You can enter family members on the same app and there is no approval process, just download and go.

A previous iteration of the app had a premium, paid version, but this is no longer the case. The app is free on the App Store and Google Play.

I enjoy traveling to different countries, having new experiences, and learning about the area and people living there. There is, however, one element of travel I always used to dread.

It was that late-night arrival in an unfamiliar city. I would be exiting the airport or train station, attempting to navigate the sea of transportation options, and aiming to make a prudent decision, all while tired from a long journey.

Traveling internationally presents several unique navigational challenges, but with the help of technology, getting from Point A to Point B has become routine, even enjoyable.

Because I’m not a tech expert, I often look for simple tools I can use to solve my travel-related navigational issues. Here are 3 basic, easy-to-use, navigation tools that make it easy to get where I need or want to be.

To help resolve the most dreaded part of my journey, the late-night airport arrival, I searched for an app showing all the transportation available between 2 points. Knowing the estimated associated costs of the journey was a plus.

Then I found Rome2Rio . Here’s why I love the site and the app.

How It Works

Rome2Rio ( iOS , Android ) works worldwide. The app accesses over 6,000 train operators, nearly a million bus routes, over 13,000 ferries, and over 1,100 airlines to find the transportation options available between 2 points .

Once downloaded, you can type in your desired departure and destination and receive all the transportation options between those 2, or more, points. The Rome2Rio website can also be used online without downloading the app.

Best of all, Rome2Rio will let you know the estimated cost of each method of travel so you can compare. Booking links for most transportation options are also provided, as well as hotel suggestions.

How I Use Rome2Rio

Getting from the airport to my hotel was my primary use of Rome2Rio. For example, I wanted to travel from the Christchurch, New Zealand, airport to my hotel. Knowing that a taxi would cost me $21 to $25 helped me tremendously . I could then compare it to Uber , or if that price range isn’t acceptable, I could select another less expensive option.

This knowledge can also help me confidently secure transportation without being overcharged.

Once I click a transportation option, Rome2Rio gives me all the details. For example, the bus option shows me the ticket cost, route numbers, connecting bus information, walking distance (if applicable), and arrival and departure times.

I also use Rome2Rio to find transportation between cities and even countries .

I use the Rome2Rio app to find transportation and their estimated costs between worldwide departure and destination points. The app also includes booking links for most transportation.

Google Maps is the No. 1 navigation tool available with approximately 1.8 billion people using it monthly.

Google Maps ( iOS , Android ) uses an internet connection to access a GPS satellite system to calculate and provide directions. It’s much more technical than that, but, as a user, that’s all I need to know.

You can get Google Maps directions to an address, business, or other destination. When you select directions , Google Maps will display different ways to get there.

The key requirement is that Google Maps needs the internet to access its data. Once you’ve downloaded directions, though, you can use them offline.

How I Use Google Maps

My most common use of Google Maps is for walking directions . I want to know if I can walk to my new hotel from my current hotel, find a supermarket nearby, or perhaps a restaurant within walking distance that serves fish.

A simple Google search for any of these brings up a map of the area around me . I then select and download walking directions to my destination and am on my way.

The directions function, even offline, until I reach my destination. I then need Wi-Fi to use Google Maps again. With SIM card Wi-Fi access, this isn’t an issue.

I’ve found that downloading Google Maps directions to use offline later works somewhat in an urban area and not so much in remote areas.

I frequently use Google Maps for walking directions within a city. The tool needs internet access to populate the directions, but once on my phone, I can use those directions offline until I reach my destination. Google Maps directions can also be downloaded ahead of time and used offline.

Maps.me ( iOS , Android ) allows me to download area maps while connected to the internet and use them offline later. This function can be useful, especially in a remote area.

The app is free to use and has downloadable city and country maps. You can also subscribe for a fee to receive enhanced maps or download more than 10 maps.

The app works well for obtaining driving directions, navigating a city on foot without Wi-Fi access, following your trip when in a taxi, or using public transport. If you enjoy hiking, downloading Maps.me offline maps can be useful.

How I Use Maps.me

Maps.me is my backup tool when Google Maps isn’t the best option . While in Christchurch, New Zealand, for example, I downloaded a map and accessed it to walk around the city.

Maps.me maps also worked well in Torshavn, Faroe Islands. Though Google Maps would have easily guided me to my destination, I wanted a new route back to my hotel. Even without the internet, Maps.me displayed an alternative route.

One downside to Google Maps is that the map can’t be accessed without the internet once I’ve reached my destination using the provided directions. Even when I’ve downloaded Google Maps to use offline, Maps.me maps worked substantially better offline in my experiences over about a dozen uses.

Maps.me allows me to download a city (or country) map and use it to navigate while offline. It works better than Google Maps when I am in a remote area without access to the internet.

For many of you, these simple navigational tools may be old news. For me, these are essential tools that offer an ongoing lifeline.

They allow me to navigate a new city I’m visiting for only a day without purchasing a $20 SIM card or accessing my international phone plan. The information gives me the confidence to negotiate solo transportation with an unknown taxi driver late at night, find that communist-era dive bar, or discover a shortcut back to my hotel in the dark.

Rome2Rio, Google Maps, and Maps.me have helped me navigate simply in a complicated world .

TikTok ban: ByteDance says app is run and controlled in US, not China

ByteDance’s appeal against a US TikTok ban is underway, and the company has accused the Department of Justice of factual errors in presenting its case – intended to force the sale of the app to an American company.

The DOJ says the app’s feed can be manipulated by the Chinese government for propaganda purposes, but Bytedance said that recommendations are actually generated in the US …

The DOJ accusations

Earlier this year, the House voted overwhelmingly to either ban TikTok from the US, or to force the sale of the app to an American-owned company. TikTok took the US government to court , arguing that the threatened ban would be unconstitutional, interfering with a first amendment right to free speech. That case was fast-tracked , and is now being heard.

The DOJ made two main accusations against Chinese developer ByteDance.

First, it says that the algorithm driving user feeds in the short video app could be controlled by the Chinese government for political purposes, to present China in a good light, or the US in a bad light.

Second, it says the personal data of American users could be passed to the Chinese government, including user views on sensitive issues like abortion and gun control.

TikTok’s denials

ByteDance has so far mostly relied on a First Amendment defence, stating that the American government is interfering with the right to free speech.

But in its appeal it is also arguing disputing the two claims made by the DOJ, as Reuters reports.

TikTok said on Thursday it is undisputed that the app’s content recommendation engine and user data are stored in the U.S. on cloud servers operated by Oracle and that content moderation decisions that affect U.S. users are made in the U.S.

Arguments are being heard in court today.

Both presidential candidates are using TikTok

It would be hard for either of the two presidential candidates to argue support for a TikTok ban, as both use it themselves.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has joined TikTok and said in June he would never support a TikTok ban. Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, joined TikTok in July and leaned in to social media as part of her campaign strategy.
