Flames engulf ferris wheel at German festival as rapper livestreams performance

30 people are thought to have been injured after a ferris wheel caught fire at Germany's Highfield Festival.

As rapper, Ski Aggu performed on a livestream at around 21:00 local time, flames could be seen engulfing two gondolas of the ferris wheel in the background.

It's thought police were among those injured, with 18 receiving treatment in hospital.

"I am absolutely dismayed and shocked by the Ferris wheel fire during my show on the Highfield", Ski Aggu later said in a statement.

"I was only told in my ear that I should not cancel the show under any circumstances but should first remain in dialogue with you so that there is no mass panic."

Riesenrad brennt auf Festival - 16 Verletzte in Klinik

Es ist ein Rock- und Popfestival, zu dem Tausende an den Störmthaler See nahe Leipzig strömen. Auf dem Highfield wird gefeiert - doch dann geraten plötzlich zwei Gondeln eines Riesenrads in Brand.

Großpösna - Ausgelassen feiern Tausende Menschen beim Highfield-Festival bei Leipzig. Doch während der Rapper Ski Aggu auf der Bühne auftritt, gerät auf dem Gelände in 100 Meter Entfernung plötzlich ein Riesenrad in Brand, aus zwei Gondeln schlagen Flammen meterhoch. Eine Katastrophe bleibt aus, weil die Menschen im Riesenrad rechtzeitig das Fahrgeschäft verlassen können. Aber es gibt zahlreiche Verletzte.

16 Menschen müssen laut Angaben der Polizei aber in Krankenhäusern behandelt werden, darunter vier mit Brandverletzungen und eine Person mit einer Sturzverletzung. Einige Verletzte, darunter Ersthelfer und mindestens vier Polizeibeamte, sollten dabei auf eine mögliche Rauchgasvergiftung untersucht werden. Insgesamt sind es 65 Menschen, die bei dem Vorfall ärztlich versorgt werden mussten. Die gute Nachricht: Keiner wird lebensgefährlich verletzt.

Erste Ermittlungserkenntnisse zur Ursache

Die große Frage, die sich die Festivalbesucher noch vor Ort stellten: Wie konnte das passieren? Ermittler untersuchen seit dem Vorfall am Samstagabend gegen 21.00 Uhr, wieso in einer der 24 Gondeln des Riesenrads ein Feuer ausbrach. Einer ersten Einschätzung zufolge war Material unterhalb des Fahrgeschäfts auf noch nicht bekannte Art und Weise in Brand geraten. Das Feuer griff auf eine Gondel über. Die Ermittlungen dauern an.

Festivalbesucher: Plötzlich war es totenstill

Festivalbesucher Guido aus Köln berichtete noch in der Nacht, das Riesenrad sei plötzlich schneller gefahren. Die brennenden Gondeln hätten dann ganz oben gestanden. „Dann herrschte Totenstille“, schilderte der 58-Jährige.

Die 40-jährige Stephanie aus dem sächsischen Werdau war besonders geschockt. Sie war nach eigenen Angaben nur wenige Minuten vor dem Brand noch selbst auf dem Riesenrad gewesen. „Wir haben irgendwie Plastik gerochen und dachten, das kommt vom Zeltplatz“, schilderte sie. Als sie dann die Flammen an den Gondeln sah, konnte sie kaum glauben, wie knapp sie davongekommen war. Das Festival wurde für rund zwei Stunden unterbrochen, dann ging die Show weiter.

Ski Aggu rappte während des Feuers weiter - damit keine Panik entsteht

Als die ersten Flammen sichtbar wurden, stand Rapper Ski Aggu auf der Bühne. In einer Instagram-Story schrieb der 26-Jährige kurze Zeit später: „Ich bin absolut bestürzt und schockiert über den Riesenradbrand während meiner Show auf dem Highfield. Mir wurde nur aufs Ohr gesagt, dass ich unter keinen Umständen die Show abbrechen, sondern zunächst mit euch im Dialog bleiben sollte, damit keine Massenpanik entsteht.“

Priorität sei gewesen, dass die Situation nicht weiter eskaliere, erklärte Ski Aggu. Das habe zum Glück auch funktioniert. „Danke, dass ihr alle so ruhig geblieben seid und dadurch eventuell Schlimmeres verhindert habt.“ Entscheidend dafür sei vor allem die Arbeit der Rettungskräfte gewesen, die schnell reagiert hätten. „Vielen Dank für euren Dienst!! Ich wünsche allen Betroffenen, dass es euch bald besser geht“, schrieb der Rapper aus Berlin, der mit bürgerlichem Namen August Jean Diederich heißt und dessen Markenzeichen eine Skibrille ist.

Bedrückte Stimmung nach dem Brand

Festivalbesucher Ricky, der aus dem Harz angereist war, zeigte sich nach dem Brand zunächst unschlüssig, ob die Konzerte weitergehen sollten. Der 27-Jährige empfand die Stimmung als gedrückt, lobte jedoch die Veranstalter: „Es gab klare Ansagen und wir wussten, was passiert ist.“

Auch Bastian aus Leipzig schilderte, die Rettungskräfte seien schnell vor Ort gewesen. Er hatte nach dem Vorfall das Gefühl, dass es viele nun zu ihren Zelten ziehe - und man eher dort den Abend ausklingen lassen wolle, um über das Erlebte zu reden, so der 33-Jährige.

Betreiber: Brand bei Fahrgastwechsel ausgebrochen

Am Morgen danach, der Brandort ist weiträumig abgesperrt, schlendern die ersten Festivalgäste über das Gelände. Ein Brandexperte ist inzwischen eingetroffen, um die Ursache des Vorfalls zu untersuchen. Auch der Betreiber des Riesenrads, Sebastian Hannstein aus Bremen, steht am Morgen neben dem Fahrgeschäft. Der Kunststoff einer Gondel ist komplett weggeschmort, übrig ist nur noch ein Gerippe aus Stahl. Zwei weitere Gondeln sind verrußt.

Das Feuer sei beim Fahrgastwechsel entstanden, sagt Hannstein der Deutschen Presse-Agentur. „Meine Mitarbeiter sagten mir, dass keine Menschen in der Gondel saßen, als das Feuer ausbrach.“ Er sei schockiert und fassungslos. „Seit Generationen betreibt meine Familie Riesenräder. So etwas ist noch nie passiert“, betonte er.

Riesenrad war erst sieben Jahre alt

Seine Mitarbeiter hätten geistesgegenwärtig reagiert, als sie die Flammen sahen, erläutert Hannstein. „Sie haben das Riesenrad beschleunigt und so die Evakuierung der anderen Gondeln beschleunigt.“ Wie viele Menschen beim Ausbruch des Feuers in den anderen Gondeln saßen, konnte der Betreiber nicht sagen.

Nach Angaben des Betreibers ist das Riesenrad 38 Meter hoch und hat 24 Gondeln. „Das Fahrgerät ist sieben Jahre alt. Das ist kein Alter für ein Riesenrad. Ich habe eines, das ist 30 Jahre alt.“ dpa
