New “Safe Travels” application required for all visitors to Hawaii

' src=

  • 2 minute read

Starting today, September 1, a new “Safe Travels” application becomes mandatory for all trans-Pacific and inter-island travelers to/in Hawaii. The application can be found at https://travel.hawaii.gov . The following video provides a basic overview of the process:

So, what is this application? It’s a digital/online app that collects required health and travel information and creates a way to keep in contact with travelers. It replaces the previous paper process and is supposed to save time for travelers and administrators.

The “Safe Travels” app is considered to be a part of the process that will eventually allow visitors to bypass quarantine by presenting a negative COVID-19 test. That process may start October 1, 2020 at the earliest.

The announcement  regarding this new application states,

“Travelers are encouraged to enter their information and trip details well in advance of their flight.  Once their health information is entered 24 hours before departure, travelers receive a QR code via email. The QR code on their mobile device or printed on paper gets scanned by the airport screener upon arrival.”

The announcement also says,

“This new online application will provide the State Department of Health (DOH) access to the mandatory health information that passengers need to provide to monitor and protect public health in real-time.  It can also be used by the Dept. of the Attorney General and county law enforcement officials to enforce the quarantine rules.”

There’s no detail provided about what the monitoring in real-time aspects include. We hope officials will clarify that.

We do not work for the state of Hawaii or have any direct affiliation with them. We do not have any additional knowledge about this form. If you have questions about Hawaii’s new Safe Travels form , unfortunately we will not be able to answer them. Go to these official resources:

  • General questions about the form and the process . (Note that all the questions and answers do not automatically load, so you may need to press a Next hyperlink to view all the questions and answers.)
  • Help page with questions and answers for how to complete the Hawaii Safe Travels form.

The Safe Travels digital application is a part of a layered system to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. In addition to the Safe Travels digital application, travelers may be subject to a 14-day quarantine, but may be able to bypass quarantine by providing proof of a negative test result taken by a trusted-testing partner within 72 hours of the departure of the final leg of travel . Changi’s latest innovation aims to serve passengers better – Safe Travel Concierge

Delivering a pleasant and stress-free experience for every passenger that passes through its doors has always been a key focus for Changi Airport. With evolving border safety requirements due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Changi Airport Group’s (CAG) Airport Operations Management team looked to see how travel to Singapore could be made easier and more seamless for travellers.

Developed by Changi Airport’s Digital, Innovation, Ventures and Analytics (DIVA) team , Safe Travel Concierge (STC) is a handy tool for passengers. What was originally a site for travellers to book and pay for their Covid-19 Arrival swab test at the onset of the pandemic is now a one-stop portal that acts as a personal travel companion for passengers. With STC, travellers no longer need to go through multiple websites to search out and complete their pre-travel requirements. Not only does it allow travellers to book and pre-pay for their arrival Covid-19 test, it also guides users through a customised list of pre-travel requirements, based on their profile and trip details.

The prototype was first developed and trialled, with the support of the Singapore Tourism Board, at the pilot hybrid tradeshow in Singapore in November 2020 – TravelRevive . It helped participants to ensure that they had completed all the necessary travel requirements before flying to Singapore, so that they could attend the event safely.

When asked how the idea for STC came about, Lucas Lee, Manager of Changi Airport’s Development Operations team, said, “Researching for information online was challenging and confusing for many passengers, as different countries have different requirements, and they could change from day to day. We wanted to make it easy for incoming travellers to navigate the pre-travel requirements to Singapore.”

Following the success of the STC trial at TravelRevive, the team continued to work on the prototype for several months, integrating more functions such as being able to cancel bookings for the Arrival swab test through STC. Thereafter, multiple rounds of user testing were done with various user profiles to ensure that the design of the portal is intuitive and user-friendly.

Since the launch of STC, take-up rate has been high. “We see more than 1,000 sign-ups a day and we expect this number to grow as travel resumes,” said Lucas. “We are also working with local and overseas travel agents to further encourage use of the portal.”

He added that the team is looking to add more functions to the portal to better serve the needs of passengers such as having a group booking feature and allowing users to access Wi-Fi at Changi Airport. “We are collecting feedback and will continue to improve the portal to ensure STC remains accurate and relevant with new government regulations and advisories.”

STC is another step taken by CAG to enhance the traveller experience as Changi prepares for the resumption of travel with the reopening of international borders. Passengers travelling to Singapore are encouraged to use the portal for a smooth arrival at Changi Airport.

10 Personal Safety Devices That Will Make Every Hotel Room Feel Secure, According to a Solo Traveler

From portable door stop alarms to carbon monoxide detectors, the 10 devices every solo traveler needs.

safe travel login

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

As carefree as travel may appear on social media feeds, the realities can be sobering. Lost luggage , cancellations and delays are all unforeseen possibilities, but there’s one aspect of travel that you do have some control over: personal safety.

I’ll admit that I was fearless when I first started solo traveling as a woman, but as the years went on, I grew more cautious as I heard about incidents among my peers: from high carbon monoxide levels in hotel rooms to being followed in a foreign city. In order to make my solo travels as secure as possible, I discovered some of the best personal safety products that are packable and portable, so I can bring them with me even when space runs slim in my carry-on.

Here, 10 products to make you feel safer while traveling, especially when staying in a hotel room alone.

Winonly Door Stop Alarm

When safety content creator Dannah Eve showed off this doorstop alarm on TikTok, I couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard about it before. The influencer has built a following for her motto: “Live aware! Not in fear” which is exactly what this product permits. No matter how luxurious a hotel is, the realities are unavoidable: locks break, there are master key cards, and break-ins happen. But, if you place this doorstop alarm under the door crack to your hotel room (or Airbnb) it provides two-fold protection. First, it prevents entry by stopping the door from opening further. Then, it sounds an alarm to scare off the intruder. The small but mighty device weighs less than a pound and can be tucked into a shoe to optimize precious space in your luggage.

Gray Rhino Portable Carbon Monoxide Detector

Though hotels are outfitted with smoke detectors, most rooms aren’t equipped with carbon monoxide devices. And, when you’re in a room with no windows or you can’t open them, there’s little air flow, which could cause a carbon monoxide build up. In fact, I had just returned from Mexico last year when a news story broke about this exact thing happening at another hotel in the same area . My mom (thanks, Mom!) immediately texted me and said to check out portable carbon monoxide detectors . There are a number of them available on Amazon , but this pocket-size version is a best-seller, even among firefighters. One of the five-star reviews from a fire captain said this detector is more reliable than the ones the department provides them with, adding, “It is a solid, simple to operate, accurate device.”

Master Lock Portable Small Lock Box

A hotel’s in-room safe may work for some travelers, but for accommodation that doesn't offer a safe, a portable lock box is a great option to keep your most prized possessions locked up. Even when I stay at a hotel with a safe, I feel more comfortable securing my jewelry, passport, and cash in this simpel grab-and-go lock box. It’s helpful when changing hotels or locations frequently so that you always know where your valuables are or in case an incident should arise in the middle of the night. Even though easy to travel with, it’s large enough to fit a smartphone, wallet, watch, and more.

Venture 4th Travel Money Belt

One of the most popular qualms I hear from travelers is the challenge of staying organized while on the road. A money belt may seem over-the-top, but they are more helpful than you think because they keep your items safe and organized. Keeping a wad of money as well as credit cards in your belt while in your hotel room ensures you always know where your cash is. And, when you leave the room, you know that your money is physically on you — which means so are your cards and cash. Even if you’re carrying around quite a bit of money, you can feel more comfortable knowing that these belts conceal your stash (unlike a bulky wallet in your back pocket or a backpack) and are tricky for pick-pocketers to access. This slim belt also has space for your passport and features a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) blocking system to keep your documents safe.

Elegoro Portable Door Lock

Many solo travelers feel safer when relying on their own door lock. The screw-like design of this portable one may look intimidating but it doesn’t require any tools or installation; simply fasten it to the door lock and tighten the system until it’s in contact with the door. Sold as a two-pack also means you can throw the compact, sturdy lock into a carry-on bag as well as your purse so that you never forget it, even on a quick trip.

Selowea Hidden Camera Detector

Hidden cameras in a hotel room may seem like something out of a horror movie, but they can actually appear in real life. When it comes to personal safety, why take a chance? To protect yourself, pack this hidden camera detector to your safety toolbox. It will put your mind at ease by beeping or vibrating within 26 feet of a hidden camera, bug, or GPS tracking device.

Ceptics Universal Travel Adapter Kit

Imagine leaving your laptop (or any electronic) charging in a hotel room only to return to it fried thanks to a power outage and ensuing voltage surge. Combat this by traveling with a converter that offers built-in surge protection if you’re traveling internationally (or just a surge protector for domestic travel) This universal travel adapter offers built-in protection from voltage surges and spikes with six global adapters so you can take it just about anywhere.

She’s Birdie The Original Personal Safety Alarm

This popular key-chain personal safety alarm may have been designed for walking alone at night or commuting on public transportation, but it works in any situation when you’re alone. It works by giving off an extremely loud alarm and strobe light when activated; it will keep your mind at ease when you go to sleep at night. Keep it under your pillow just in case; all you need to do is remove the top pin, which activates an alarm that can run for up to 40 continuous minutes.

Boxiki Travel RFID Blocking Sleeves

This handy pack of 12 RFID-blocking cards and 3 RFID-blocking sleeves protect your wallet and travel documents from electronic fraud or theft. The sleeves block signals to RFID-enabled cards to prevent unwanted and unwarranted access to credit cards, money cards, identification cards, and passports (which fit in the larger sleeves). These sleeves tend to get beat up over time, so stocking up on a dozen means you can tuck an extra in your travel bag and keep a few in the closet to refresh after multiple uses.

BV TSA Approved Luggage Travel Lock

If you want to ensure the safety of your bags without using the hotel safe, travel with a luggage lock. Personally, I don’t tend to travel with more than carry-on luggage so I never thought I had the need for a luggage lock. But, I found that using a lock for in-room instances has its perks, especially the added security to your belongings when you’re out enjoying your destination. I like that these locks don’t require keys so that I don’t have to carry that around when I’m traveling. Plus, being TSA-approved, I can also use them if I need to check a bag on my way home.

Is Madrid Safe for Travel in 2024?

Updated September 19, 2023

Under normal circumstances, Madrid is a safe destination—but it’s also a huge city! We asked some locals about safety in Madrid. They helped us put together this guide on everything from COVID to tips for solo travelers.

COVID Update: When will it be safe to travel to Spain?

These days, one of the most popular questions about traveling to Spain concerns COVID-19: Can Americans travel to Spain?

The short answer: Yes!

Here’s what to know:

  • Proof of vaccination is not required.
  • Travelers are not required to take a COVID test before travel.
  • Everyone age six and older must wear on public transportation.

Safety in Madrid

El Retiro Park Is Madrid Safe

Madrid, Spain’s capital city, is packed with incredible tapas bars, iconic boulevards, and classic works of art. Like most places to visit in Spain, Madrid is considered a safe destination.

Still, Madrid is a big city. With over three million metropolitan residents, it’s the largest city in Spain. That means there are some safety considerations to keep in mind.

Locals say as long as you follow a few common-sense safety guidelines, you’ll find that Spain is a safe place to visit.

Common scams in Madrid

Although Madrid is a safe city, local note that visitors should be beware of certain scams. These can include:

  • Menus without prices: Restaurants are required by law to display their prices. If they don’t, you might end up overpaying for your meal.
  • The football (soccer) trick: In a city known for soccer, it may not seem unusual to see a group of people kicking a ball around on the street. But if they invite you to play, be cautious. Scammers have been known to use this as a lure to pick pockets or steal discarded bags.
  • Taxi scammers : Although transportation in Spain is largely safe, use caution when hailing a taxi in Madrid. Only take licensed cabs. If the driver says their meter is broken, it's likely a scam.
  • “Free” gifts : If someone approaches you with a “gift”—it may be a rose, bracelet, flower pin, or another kind of charm—refuse. If you accept, the scammer will loudly and aggressively demand payment.

Although cities like Madrid and Barcelona are safe, scams can happen. Keep an eye on your belongings and stay aware of your surroundings. Use extra caution in big crowds or around tourist hubs.

Is Madrid safe for solo travelers?

Solo Travel Is Madrid Safe

Solo travelers rejoice! Spain is safe for solo travel, and its captivating capital city is no exception. That being said, there are a few things that anyone traveling alone should keep in mind:

  • Stay with the crowd after dark: Save your solo exploration for the daytime. Although Madrid is safe, anyone traveling alone should avoid wandering too far from the central city.
  • Watch your drink: If someone buys you a drink, be sure you see it made. This rule applies everywhere
  • Know how you’re going to get home : In Madrid, the party can last until the early morning. Know how to get back to your hostel or hotel so you don’t get lost.
  • Eat at the markets : If you feel awkward eating at a restaurant, wander through one of Madrid’s many markets for a meal. (But if you do eat out, remember that dinner in Spain doesn’t start until late!)

Important Spanish phrases to know

No matter where you stay in Spain, it’s a good idea to learn a few words and phrases. Saying hello and thank you goes a long way, even if that’s all you know! Locals note these are some good basics to learn:

  • Por favor —Please
  • Gracias —Thank you
  • De nada —You’re welcome
  • Buenos dias —Good morning
  • Disculpe ...Excuse me—
  • Dónde está ...—Where is…?

Emergency numbers to know

Although you probably won't need them, here are some good emergency numbers to keep on hand—just in case.
