It‘s home to caribou, moose, foxes, arctic ground squirrels, bears, as well as Mount Denali – the highest mountain in North America. It’s a perfect romantic place for all adventurous souls!

A must-do is a bus trip to the park (there is no other way to get into the park, except for sightseeing flights). There are several alternatives and tours you can choose from (the deeper you go into the park, the more wildlife you see). You can also head out into the wild with your partner for a few days with a “camper bus”. Backpacking in Denali National Park is a very unique and romantic experience. If you decide on a backpacking adventure, start at the Ranger station to get your permit and learn about camping safety.

The coolest accommodation in the area is Kantishna Roadhouse – a full-service backcountry lodge located 90 miles into pristine nature.

The best time to visit the Denali National Park is in the summer season, approximately from June to August. At the end of August, there is a good chance to see the Northern Lights.

3 – Orlando, Florida

Often referred to as the theme park capital of the world, Orlando is often overlooked as a romantic destination in the US in favor of big cities like New York  or San Francisco. However, much more than just the home of Mickey Mouse, Orlando is full of wonderful things for couples to do together.

The great thing about Florida is that it’s warm almost all year round. But, for the most pleasant warmth and avoiding the staggering crowds that Orlando attracts, visiting between March to June or September to October is best. There is no option for accommodations inside Honeymoon Island & Caladesi Island . But is just a short distance driving from Clearwater or Dunedin, where you can find several options for accommodations.

8 – Joshua Tree National Park, California

You can visit the park during a  West Coast road trip  and enjoy an overnight stay in an  Airstream , or make it a full vacation! 9 – Maui, Hawai

Hawaii is an amazing place to visit and it doesn’t come much better than the island of Maui – definitely one of the best romantic getaways in the united states. This is an ideal getaway for couples looking for a romantic retreat. It’s home to many beautiful beaches, lush green gardens and there are so many luxury resorts you can enjoy with your other half.

The summer months of June, July, and August are the most popular times to visit the island but going on the shoulder season on either side of these months may be a better choice as you still get great weather but with fewer crowds.

Ios is a small island 18 miles long and 6 miles wide. But despite this, it packs some lovely things to do for couples on their honeymoon. And while you can certainly spend a weekend here as part of an island hopping itinerary,  five days on the island of Ios offers the chance to relax, explore, and have fun together.

Ios is a wonderful choice for active couples. Put on your light hiking shoes , bring a water bottle, and hike from Mylopotas Beach to Klima Beach. Madeira is an island belonging to Portugal, off the coast of Morocco. It is famous for its airport built over the sea, often visited by crosswinds which makes landing here quite spectacular to watch. The island is small and mountainous, without too many beaches.

One of the most romantic  things to do in Madeira  is watching the sunrise from the top of Pico do Arieiro , one of the tallest peaks on the island. What makes the sunrise remarkable is that you are above the clouds. The sun rises from below, looking like it’s breaking the clouds, leaving the ocean underneath it coloured in shades of orange.

Make sure you arrange transport so that you can be on the top of the mountain at around 4:30 am. The taxi drivers on the island also act as tour guides, so try and negotiate a good rate and avoid a group tour. Don’t worry, the distance between Funchal (the main town) and Pico do Arieiro is only 40 minutes by car.

Another great experience in Madeira is going on a private sunset dolphin and whale-watching tour on a catamaran. Madeira is known for the dolphins joining the catamarans as soon as they exit the harbour. Milos is a mid-size Greek Island located in the Aegean Sea near Santorini, Paros and Naxos. The month of May is just the beginning of the summer season in the Greek Islands which means that it is still quiet and mostly kids’ free, but with stunning weather. This is a great time to visit the island as a couple for a peaceful and relaxing European honeymoon. 

One of the most unique things to do on Milos Island is to visit its  moonscape at Sarakiniko Beach . With white rock formations, caves, a desert and a thin white sand beach, Sarakiniko is a large surprising area of the island that is great to explore together. During your time at Sarakiniko, you can also cliff jump with your partner for some heart pumping adrenaline!

One activity you should experience with your partner on Milos is watching the sunset from the town of Plaka. After heading all the way up to the castle, you can sit on the walls and watch the sunset over the sea with views of the whitewashed town and churches. Don’t forget to bring a picnic of hors d’oeuvres and wine for the ultimate romantic experience.

In May, you can expect temperatures between 60°F and 73°F. The weather is pleasant with lots of sunshine and peaks of temperatures that allow for time spent at the beach.

It is also actually quite easy to reach Milos Island. The island has an airport that is close to the main town Parikia. Though it can be difficult to find a direct international flight to Milos Airport, there are numerous flights available through Athens.

On Milos Island, you can choose to either take the bus or rent a motorised vehicle like a car, a scooter or an ATV for your stay. ATVs are safe to drive on Milos Island, especially in May when roads aren’t busy. If you choose to rent an ATV, you will need to take a taxi from the airport to the main town of Parikia which is about 10 minutes away. In the town, you’ll have the choice between several ATV rental companies.

If you decide to rent a car , some car rental companies have a desk in the airport where you can get your car. Some car companies are only present in the city and will come pick you up at the airport.

London is the perfect honeymoon destination in Europe for couples looking for a mixture of culture, history, and romance. While the weather is fairly mild all summer, booking in May will provide warm spring weather while missing the busy summer tourist season starting in June. 

To kick off your trip, head over to Westminster Bridge for breathtaking views of the Parliament Building and Big Ben (which is the perfect spot for a honeymoon photo or two).

If you think those views are incredible, head over to the South Bank to take a trip on the London Eye. The ride time is about half an hour, which gives you plenty of time to reflect and enjoy each other’s company, all the while watching the gorgeous London skyline. Andalucia is arguably the most romantic part of Spain and Granada with its strong Moorish culture, historic center and chilled out vibe may well be the best place to spend a May honeymoon in Europe. 

While many visitors make a quick visit just to see the Alhambra, which is the most visited site in Spain, staying a few days and discovering more of the city is highly recommended. There is so much to discover in the small historic city which is far less crowded after the day trippers have left. 

Spend some time getting lost in the laneways and passages of the Albayzín neighborhood. This part of town offers cool bars, shops, and little cafes that spill onto the streets. Don’t bother trying to follow a specific route, just take turns choosing the direction and wander aimlessly for an hour. It’s a great way to discover your own special places. 

Afternoon tapas is a fun way to wind down after a day of sightseeing. The word “tapas” means “little helpings”, and they are served on a small plate, usually with wine. They can be eaten while standing up or sitting down.

Granada is famous for the generosity of its tapas. While in most of Spain the tradition of free tapas still exists, in Granada you will find that they are put on your table before you even order anything else. Think croquettes, chorizo, stuffed peppers and patatas bravas, a dish of potatoes covered in a spicy sauce. A new plate comes out with each round of drinks.  

Take in the sunset from a mirador, a lookout. Sunsets are a big deal in Granada and sharing a memorable sunset is a perfect way to end the day. There are several miradors with magnificent views. The best view is from Mirador de San Nicolás where you can see the Alhambra palace from afar. 

Either arrive early or make a booking at one of the many restaurants that line the street overlooking the Alhambra. El Huerto de Juan Ranas has a lovely terrace with stunning views and serves delicious local dishes. 

Granada is at its best in spring and May sees comfortable temperatures and gardens in full bloom. The city is not yet too busy and it is an ideal time to explore.

Few international flights land at Granada airport, although you can get a domestic flight from Madrid or Barcelona. Many visitors choose to land in either Malaga (just under 2 hours by train) or Seville (3 hours by train).

If you are looking for the perfect honeymoon destination in Europe in May then look no further than the Alsace Region in France.

The Alsace region is known worldwide for its stunning and fresh cuisine, fairytale villages and amazing wines. Larger towns like Strasbourg and Colmar hold the majority of the tourist attractions but if you want to get away from all the hustle and bustle with your loved one, you can easily stay in a magnificent smaller town to really get a taste of this wonderful region.

If staying in one of the larger towns is what you would like to do then you don’t really need to hire a car. Public transport and just wandering the sites is the best way to see the town.

May in the Alsace is one of the peak times so it is busy wherever you go but few venture out into the smaller towns. If you have a car, you can easily visit the Chateau Haut Konigsberg, the insta-worthy town of Eguisheim, the barbary sanctuary La Montagne De Singes, the ruins of the Hohlandsbourg, Fortweger Gingerbread Museum and the fortified town of Neuf Briasch.

In the surrounding small towns, you can easily find a little restaurant with a gorgeous outdoor eating area or a boulangerie where you can pick up a freshly made treat to just sit and relax without the masses of crowds.

Driving is easy around the Alsace but if you are looking for a bit of adventure you can also spend your honeymoon in the Alsace on a 2-wheeled adventure too. The Alsace wine route is also one of the easiest in the world to cycle as there are bike paths that weave through some of the small towns with perfect stops in the vines and in town centres where you can rest.

The Alsace is stunning in any season but visiting the Alsace in May for your honeymoon would be the perfect trip to France.

The best time to visit Milan would be in May as the weather is still warm but not too hot.

Milan is an amazing place to visit with so many things to do to make your honeymoon unforgettable. One of the best things to do as a couple is to stroll down The Navigli canal. Here you will find restaurants and bars for you to sample the delights that Milan offers in a very romantic setting.

If you are looking to take the most stunning honeymoon photos, climb to the top of the Duomo Cathedral. This is one of the most popular things to do in Milan. This historic place was built in 1386 and is one of the most famous symbols of Milan. You will find the most amazing panoramic views over Milan that you will not find anywhere else. For the most romantic visit, try visiting during Sunset. 

There are plenty of other great ways to spend your time together in this Italian City. You can visit the Castello Sforzesco, which houses several fascinating museums, including Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, and the Museum of Ancient Art.

Cazorla, Spain

One of the best hidden gems and a wonderful European honeymoon destination for active newlyweds is the tiny town of Cazorla in southern Spain. Being one of the most  beautiful white villages in Andalucia , Cazorla is nestled in the foothills of Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park. This is one of the most astounding natural areas in the south of Spain with an abundance of wildlife and epic hiking trails.

In the village itself, make sure you see the ruins of the Santa Maria church where you will also find the tourist office to join a guided underground tour below the church.

A great place for a coffee is the picturesque square, Plaza de la Corredera with mountain views.

The best viewpoint is the Balcon de Zabaleta where you can see the whitewashed houses with a backdrop of mountains, and the remains of two medieval castles built in the 13th and 14th centuries, Castillo de la Yedra and Castillo de Cinco Esquinas.

Castillo de la Yedra can be visited at certain hours of the day on guided tours. You can ask in the tourist information for exact times as you must book in advance.

Castillo Cinco Esquinas can only be reached by hiking a steep uphill and the ruins are free to visit. More than the castle remains, the sweeping views of Cazorla and the surrounding never-ending olive groves are well worth the climb. You can also combine this hike with the most popular hike in Cazorla, Rio Cerezuelo.

Another hike that is a must in May is Rio Borosa, taking you along the turquoise river, waterholes, and waterfalls before it winds up and through two tunnels carved high up on the mountain wall. Don’t forget your flashlights for this one!

In May, you will be rewarded with an abundance of water in the waterfalls and rivers accompanied by colorful flowers and green forests. Make sure you take a tripod so that you can take photos together in this beautiful setting as a lifetime memory from this unique honeymoon.

The average temperatures in May range from 74 °F to 48 °F with barely any rain.

From Granada airport, it is about 2 hours and from Malaga and Almeria airports you can expect approximately a 3 hour drive. It is a big advantage to have a car so that you can explore most of the natural park while you are there.

Amalfi Coast is a perfect destination if you want to spend your honeymoon in Europe in May. It is a beautiful region in southern Italy, located between Sorento and Salerno.

Once here, you can spend time lounging or walking at the beach (though the Mediterranean sea is likely too cold to swim in May), explore the narrow streets of the small towns on the coast and visit the museums.

Another thing you can do together is drive. Rent a car and explore the Amalfi Coast. The narrow road, with tight curves bordered by the sea on one side and the mountain on the other, is exciting and a little bit scary. However, if you have the nerve, it is a fantastic way to explore the area.

In the evening, don’t forget to savor a romantic dinner with sea fruits, pasta, limoncello and, of course, an Italian dessert like tiramisu. And make sure you choose a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the sea.

In May, the weather is great for exploring the coast and the sun is perfect for long walks.

The temperature is around 68°F to 77°F, so it is not too hot during the day to explore.

You can get here if you land in Napoli (the largest airport near this region) and book a car rental from the airport. Another option is to take a bus from the airport.

With its pleasantly warm weather and thinned crowds, May is the perfect time to take a trip before the expensive summer season. When May comes around in Bryce Canyon National Park, the snow is nearly gone, which means the park's main road and popular trails are likely to be open. Highs are typically in the 60s during the day, too – ideal conditions for hiking and biking this Utah park's paths. Visitor numbers start to ramp up this month, but it's still early enough in the season that you're unlikely to have to jostle for a view at the popular Bryce Point, which overlooks Bryce Amphitheater, a landscape of otherworldly rock spires (called hoodoos).

This Portuguese island chain in the Atlantic Ocean offers a little bit of everything for active travelers, from geoparks and waterfall hikes to paragliding. Though the weather here is always a bit unpredictable, the chances of wind and rain are lower in May. The water temperature also begins to warm up for must-do activities like snorkeling or swimming with dolphins, and with fewer swells than the winter months, beginner surfers will feel more comfortable trying to hang ten. Take advantage of the minimal rainfall by experiencing all of the outdoor activities and attractions that this Philippine island has to offer –spoiler alert, there are a lot. Spend time relaxing on Palawan's white sand beaches, island-hopping or even swimming with gentle whale sharks. Water sports are popular in this destination as well, from diving Tubbataha Reef to kayaking El Nido's Big Lagoon.  

Visiting Granada, Spain, in May is a no-brainer. Average temperatures in the mid-70s, blooming flower displays (at Generalife Gardens) and a full roster of events make this Andalusian city a must-visit in the spring. Día de la Cruz and Feria del Corpus Christi, two of the city's most popular celebrations, are both held in May, and travelers won't want to miss seeing Granada come alive with music, flamenco dancers and more. Save time during your trip for a guided tour of the Alhambra and strolling through the Albaicín neighborhood.

May falls within this Peruvian city's winter season, though you probably wouldn't notice thanks to its consistently mild temperatures (highs hover in the 60s). This month rarely sees rain showers, and you'll encounter fewer tourists at archaeological wonders like La Catedral – which sits in the restaurant- and coffee shop-filled Plaza de Armas – and Machu Picchu – a bucket list destination and UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 50 miles northwest of Cusco. If you're up for a challenge, hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This difficult trek through the area's towering mountains takes about four days to complete.

With 33 beaches, this eastern Caribbean island is a sun worshipper's dream, and May temperatures in the upper 70s and 80s are perfect for basking on its white sands . Spend warm days venturing to offshore cays, exploring fishing villages and watching yacht races during the Anguilla Regatta, typically held every May. Since this is the start of the island's rainy season, the weather can be wetter and more humid than the winter months, but visitors will be rewarded with cheaper accommodations. 

May is a great time for a trip to this seaside Spanish city before the heat and humidity become unbearable. Can't-miss architectural marvels to check out include Antoni Gaudí's whimsical Park Güell and the Gothic-style Sagrada Família. Budget time for visiting some of Barcelona's highly regarded museums, such as the Picasso Museum, and relax at Barceloneta beach before stopping at a nearby seafood restaurant for some of the best paella in the city. What's more, the city plays host to a number of events come May, including film and music festivals

Craggy coastline views, a world-famous aquarium and a superb farm-to-table dining scene draw tourists of all types to Monterey, California. Though temperatures here remain in the 60s for most of the year, rainfall drops significantly in May. Popular festivals also make this a great time of the year to visit. Come early in the month for the Pacific Grove Good Old Days Street Festival, which showcases local artisans and craft vendors, plus a variety of food booths. And near the end of the month, the three-day California Roots Music & Arts Festival celebrates reggae artists.

Visit Laguna Beach for a perfect sunny-and-70, laid-back beach vacation. May is part of this Southern California town's spring shoulder season, so you'll find fewer people on popular stretches of sand like Main Beach and Crescent Bay Beach. Plus, the quieter month is ideal for relaxation-focused activities, such as outdoor yoga and hiking. When travelers need a break from reconnecting with themselves or nature, they can check out Laguna Beach's thriving art scene, which includes hundreds of galleries, studios and public works of art.

Bright turquoise water, gorgeous white sand and lush green vegetation await vacationers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Composed of 32 islands and cays, this Caribbean archipelago is perfect for a tropical getaway. May falls between the country's peak winter season and its hurricane-prone low season, making it an ideal time for scuba diving and snorkeling in the Tobago Cays Marine Park, swimming and soaking up some rays at Canouan's beaches and hiking to beautiful waterfalls like Dark View Falls. Travelers will also want to check out the country's 20-acre Botanical Gardens, the oldest available in the Western Hemisphere.

Victoria, British Columbia's capital city, sits on the southern portion of Vancouver Island. Not only does this Canadian destination boast comfortable highs in the low 60s in May, it is just a short ferry ride from Seattle (less than three hours), making it perfect for a quick weekend getaway . Spend your visit strolling through the 55-acre Butchart Gardens, which are bursting with colorful tulips and cherry blossoms come May, then get out on the water on a whale watching tour. Before heading home, don't forget to shop for souvenirs along Government Street.

Considered the birthplace of democracy and drama, Athens boasts a historical legacy that is hard to top. The main reason to visit is to see the ancient city's impressive ruins, which you'll find at the Acropolis and Ancient Agora. For an additional look at Athens' past, check out the incredible Greek artifacts on display at the National Archaeological Museum and the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture. May vacations are especially enjoyable thanks to comfortable daytime temps hovering in the mid-70s.

By late May, most of Yellowstone's trails and must-see attractions are open, welcoming eager nature enthusiasts seeking a breath of fresh air. Romance can be many things to many people, but few can resist the allure of a romantic escape for two. While there's no wrong answer when it comes to romance, some of the world's most beautiful spots lend themselves to catering to couples, especially when it comes to hotels. So whether you're planning a honeymoon , an anniversary or a weekend getaway just because, these are our top picks for the most romantic places in the world, plus where to stay in each.

1. Amalfi Coast, Italy

From the naturally blessed shores of  Lake Como  right down to Sicily's heart-melting capital  Palermo , you could throw a dart anywhere on a map of Italy and land on one of the most romantic places in the world. It's spurred on much debate within the team but if we  had  to choose just one fuzzy-eyed spot in Italy, it's the Amalfi Coast. We're not alone in our admiration either. The Greeks, so taken by the area’s natural beauty, attributed it to a nymph who captivated the heart of Hercules. The  towns of Amalfi Coast  only add to the charm, with brightly hued houses dotted along the rocking hillside, each offering a unique outlook along with shops, restaurants and swimming spots that are up for discovery.

Where to stay: Pretty much all of the  best Amalfi Coast hotels  fit the bill for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. In terms of location, Borgo Santandrea in Amalfi is a winner, perched high in the cliffs and built into the rock face overlooking the sea. All rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and sea views. Palazzo Avino in Ravello has equally knock-out views, especially from the top-floor Infinito Suite with its large living room and a bathroom with a hot-tub-style bath. For a stay that pulls out all of the stops, it doesn't get much better than  Le Sirenuse , a Pompeii-style red and white building in the centre of Positano. The restaurant here, La Sponda, with its 400 candles and bougainvillaea-clad dining room, is quite possibly the most romantic in the region.

2. The Maldives

For going off-grid

Confetti bursts of colourful tropical fish in gin-clear lagoons, freshly prepared breakfast spreads delivered to your private pool via floating trays, sipping a morning coffee while a manta ray soars underneath your feet – it's the stuff of honeymoon dreams and the much lauded reality of a trip to the Maldives. While there are plenty of family-friendly hotels in the Maldives , few places can compare to the archipelago country's innate sense for romance and adults-only stays. Boutique stays and lo-fi boltholes area rarity here, instead the best hotels in the Maldives are world class, spread out on their own private islands, nestling state-of-the-art spas and multiple restaurants amongst lush jungles, pristine beaches and house reefs.

For the latest shiny stay, Six Senses recently set up its second hotel in the Maldives, offering up a tip-top spa with an impressive couples' suite. In terms of aesthetics, it's hard to beat Gili Lankanfushi Maldives , where all villas are stilted over one of the most eye-wateringly beautiful lagoons in the country, keeping the island wild and the beaches on full dazzling display.

3. Santorini, Greece

Santorini is the knockout Greek island – the island with the best views, the best sunsets, and the best hotels. Combine all of these elements and it's a recipe for one of the most romantic spots in the world. Days are best spent out on the water, sailing to nearby islands and hopping between the best beaches in Santorini . But then again you could easily stay at one of the best hotels in Santorini – where private infinity pools boast the best seats in the house – and never want to leave.

Where to stay: For one of the best views on the island, check in to cliffside Nobu Hotel , where the 25 luxe rooms and suites come with uninterrupted views of the Aegean. 4. Paris, France

For a weekend break

When it comes to a romantic city break it's hard not to have all eyes on Paris . The clichés can't help but ring true when exploring the city, from serene strolls along the Seine to a glass of wine with a view at one of the best rooftop bars in Paris . 5. Marrakech, Morocco

For a winter sun escape

With  Morocco ’s year-round, bone-warming weather just a three-hour flight from  London , Marrakech makes for a sunny romantic escape when all is gloomy at home. And while the buzz of the Old City's winding souks and the sight of cobras dancing out of baskets make for a fun adventure, there are other sides to  Marrakech  away from the noise of Jemaa el-Fna square and the tourists at the Jardin Majorelle. For a slower and more private pace, swap the medina for the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, followed by a drink at Grand Café de la Poste, one of the most beautiful restaurants in the city.

Set in 20 acres of gardens just inside the walls of the Old City, the hotel has retained the feel of a palace but added a contemporary theatricality to its accommodation (which now includes three three-bedroom riads with their own pools), plus four restaurants, five bars and a Salon de Thé. For a pretty riad stay , reserve a traditional room at Riad Sadaka and don't forget your swimming costume – the courtyard pool is simply stunning.

6. Bali, Indonesia

The spiritual getaway

Bali is beloved as the land of a million islands, misty, mythical mountainous stacks, and chilled-out beach clubs . It's also the land of some of the most beautiful places to stay in the world. No matter how many five-star hotels open up though, Bali is no homogenized island resort. It's a magical, spiritual place, which manages to retain its authenticity and culture, as well as its unspoilt beaches and green tropical landscapes. All essential ingredients for a romantic stay.

Where to stay: The list of fabulous Bali hotels is always expanding, but for something more down to earth, look to Sandat Glamping tents , set among bright-green rice fields close to Ubud. Cuddling under canvas is less lumpy groundsheets and roof leaks, more canopy beds and private decks. Newcomer Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape , is a “no walls, no doors” resort with just 16 villas as well as a two-story central pavilion from which a dreamy, lounger-lined infinity pool protrudes into the valley.

7. Tulum, Mexico

The golden beaches of Mexico have long been a draw for couples, but one such spot is increasingly becoming the go-to for well-heeled couples seeking bohemian barefoot luxury. Just south of Cancun on the Yucatán Peninsula lies Tulum , the promised land of designer yoga, spiritual jungle journeys and ancient-temple-fringed sands. Plus some of the best hotels in Mexico .

Where to stay: Casa Malca is a former hacienda of Pablo Escobar’s, and now a boutique hotel highly curated by socialite art dealer Lio Malca. Down a dirt path and away from the scrums of man-buns and juiced-up goddesses, here beach suites face a quiet stretch of powder-white sand; all windows point to the Caribbean . The hotel itself is like one giant immersive art exhibition; the entrance has a huge door carved out of tree trunks, framed by curtains stitched from vintage wedding gowns, between which dangle two swings made of antique furniture. As Lio says, it’s about ‘connecting with yourself and the wild’ as well as ‘luxury and art’.

8. Big Sur, California

For the outdoorsy

Nature-lovers can’t help but fall for Big Sur , a wild and storied stretch of California’s central coast. Its bewitching blend of towering redwood forest, muscular green mountains and crashing ocean views has drawn everyone from bohemian writers (Henry Miller) to Hollywood heavyweights (Steve McQueen), seeking isolation in its eucalyptus-scented heart. Is there anything more seductive than hiking hand-in-hand to remote, wooded waterfalls or discovering your own dramatic, deserted beach ?

Where to stay: Look to Alila Ventana , which sprawls across a Big Sur mountain meadow and where suites have a rustic-luxe, cabin-esque vibe. When you’ve finished gazing over the Pacific from your balcony hammock (roomy enough for two), try a couple’s treatment in a forest-facing spa cabana, plunge into the open-air Japanese baths, or take a dip in the clothing-optional communal pool.

9. Seychelles

For island indulgence

The world ‘oohs’ and 'aahs' about the Maldives but smart travellers know the Seychelles warrants just as much fanfare. Thanks to the islands' remoteness – 1,600km off the east coast of Africa – they have never been cheap to visit, or, for that matter, on any cruise-ship itineraries. And there in lies the appeal.

Where to stay: Only the best of the best can set up a hotel in the Seychelles . One such address is the Four Seasons Resort Seychelles , a remote hillside retreat overlooking the bay of Petite Anse on the south-west coast of Mahé. The 67 stilted villas and suites feel like tree houses, peeping out from the jungle canopy of coconut, mango, jackfruit and cinnamon trees. All the obligatory features of the luxury 'Robinson Crusoe' experience are in place – infinity-edged plunge pools, open-air showers, glass-walled bathrooms and expansive outdoor living areas – but taken to another level. At Six Senses Zil Pasyon , the villas are also more akin to super-smart, minimalist tree-houses, secluded amid rocks and pristine forest.

10. New York

It may be a busy city, full of comings and goings and beeping traffic jams, but  New York  is no stranger to magical moments of romance. It usually hits the city when the first autumn leaves start to fall, blanketing the city in shades of auburn and ruby, crescendoing up until Christmas when leaves are swapped for twinkling lights. During this time one of the most romantic things to do in New York is to just take a walk, around Central Park, through Greenwich Village, along The High Line.

Where to stay: To lean into the romance of it all, play up to the old New York charms with a stay on the Upper East Side. There's  The Lowell  (pictured) on ritzy East 63rd Street, where bedrooms are the last word in elegance, with polished mahogany floors, Persian rugs and good, hand-made furniture. For pure relaxation amongst the chaos, check into the Aman in midtown, where the sprawling, three-floor spa and wellness centre has a 65-foot pool, plus not one but two spa houses – one centred around an Eastern European banya, the other a Moroccan hammam.

11. Ibiza, Spain

For island chic

As insiders will tell you, there's a lot more to Ibiza than meets the eye. Go off the beaten track even a fraction and you will discover a world of sleepy hill villages, wild forests, rambling orchards and crumbling farm houses. Time your visit to spring and a further surprise awaits: almond trees in full bloom, covering great swathes of the interior, with entire valleys exploding into glorious white and pink blossom. All this is complemented by an appealing combination of warm days and chilly nights.

Where to stay: Front-row seats for this extraordinary natural show are available at Cas Gasi , a 12-room property that spills down a hillside smothered in almond, fig and carob trees. Since opening in 1998, Cas Gasi has become known as one of the best hotels in Ibiza , particularly with high-profile guests who love its secluded location and low-key luxury. OKU Ibiza also has a privileged location that gives you access to the most beautiful beach spots on the island, along with wabi sabi–inspired design, two serene swimming pools, regular yoga sessions and fusion cuisine.

For romance by rail

There is something irresistibly romantic about luxury train travel . Add India to the mix and you've got an experience guaranteed to dazzle. In the heyday of the maharajas it was not unusual for royalty to travel with their furniture – four-poster beds, thrones, you name it. This is certainly the look the new Maharajas' Express is going for. One of the only luxury trains offering itineraries that cross India's state borders, 'Royal India' is a seven-day epic journey from Delhi to Mumbai , taking in Agra, Ranthambore, Jaipur, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Udaipur ( pictured above ) and Vadodara along the way.

Among the highlights is a decadent Champagne lunch on a hillock overlooking the Taj Mahal, a tiger-spotting jeep safari in Ranthambore National Park and elephant polo matches in Jaipur culminating in a Champagne dinner. Life on board is all about comfort. All the cabins and suites are wonderfully regal with huge windows, comfortable beds, LCD TV's and DVD players; but if your feeling particularly flush, book the two-bedroom Presidential Suite, which occupies an entire carriage and has a living room big enough for several comfortable sofas and a dining table. (The junior suite is also surprisingly roomy and much more reasonably priced.) Other treats include an observation carriage with its own bar, games table and club armchairs, and two fine-dining restaurants.

13. Antigua, Caribbean

The spa retreat

Accessed only by boat, the secluded, car-free private-island hideaway of Jumby Bay ( pictured above ), two miles off the coast of Antigua , offers the quintessential Caribbean experience. The standout for romance is the spa , set close to the beach and open to the elements, with five treatment rooms that open onto private terraces. The signature treatments use ingredients taken straight from the garden; one of the highlights is a treatment that involves lying in a soft, handmade hammock while a therapist focuses on pressure points in your head, back, hands and feet to release tension. You can then amble over to your thatched bohio (hut) on the beach, or to one of the many hammocks strung up between the palm trees. The resort is good for creative little extras: to help you enjoy the astonishing night sky, staff will pack a Champagne picnic dinner and send you off to star-gaze on Pasture Beach; there are also cookery classes for men, led by head chef Paolo Lovari, so while their partners indulge in spa treatments (not to generalise), they can learn how to make everything from ceviche to Caribbean lobster bisque.

14. Venice, Italy

For a hit to all the senses

In any line-up of the world’s most romantic cities, Venice has long been blazing a trail. This jewel-box city has an extraordinary ability to seduce every one of its visitors – whether it’s via the haunting cry of a gondolier bouncing off the city’s ancient stone walls; the awe and wonder of sighting a Caravaggio in a backstreet church, or the first sip of a perfectly sweet Bellini in a tiny cicchetti bar stumbled upon by chance. Skip the summer, when oppressive crowds steal much of Venice ’s romance and come in winter instead – the city becomes intoxicatingly quiet, and you’ll get most of the big-ticket sites all to yourself. To dial up the romance, whoosh in on the Venice-Simplon Orient Express : it’s hands-down the most lavish train journey in the world, and guaranteed to whisk you straight back to the golden age of travel.

Where to stay: If you’ve got deep pockets, you can’t beat a stay at  Aman Venice  – the gilded ballrooms, Murano chandeliers and priceless frescoes were good enough for the Clooney’s wedding night. But if you want to flee the paparazzi, float across the lagoon to  Belmond Hotel Cipriani , a little pocket of peace with romantic rose and hydrangea-filled gardens and an enormous pool with views across to St Mark’s Square. Slightly further afield but no less magical,  Casa Burano offers a more laidback, affordable stay, squirrelled away in a string of candy-coloured fishermen’s houses on film-set pretty Burano. The island can get busy at times, but once the day-trippers vanish, there’s no better place to catch one of Venice’s famous fuchsia-pink sunsets.

15. Buenos Aires, Argentina

For flinging on your dancing shoes

Buenos Aires is often touted as South America’s answer to Paris. Yet there’s far more to the sultry Argentinean capital than it’s intoxicating collision of European and Latin American cultures. This enduringly sexy city is an endless love affair of tango, sizzling asado and big, full-bodied wines – and most definitely a place to get dressed up and stay out late. A crop of exciting young chefs is revolutionising the city’s thrillingly unpretentious food scene, and buzzy rooftop cocktail bars are slowly taking over the city. And of course, there’s no better way to get under Buenos Aires’ skin than by learning the art of the world’s most passionate dance – even better if it’s done at a traditional, dimly-lit  milonga .

Where to stay: Palacio Duhau dominates Buenos Aires’ hotel scene – inside, it’s a feast of glittering chandeliers and marble floors, while the candlelit terrace at restaurant Los Salones del Piano Nobile is an unbeatable date night spot. For a more authentic experience in the heart of trendy foodie neighbourhood Palermo,  Home is a hipsters’ hangout with a tiny pool flanked by blousy jacaranda trees and the smell of jasmine lingering in the air. The delightful staff are the hotel’s biggest asset – miraculously appearing exactly when you need them, but utterly tuned in to knowing when you just want to be left alone with your significant other.

16. Iceland

For adventurous spirit

It's hard not to fall for Iceland’s awe-inspiring primal landscapes. The country delivers a hit of romance and adventure in equal measure, and in winter – when short days shout out for cosy nights snuggled by the fire, and there’s a decent chance of spotting the elusive Northern Lights dance across the eerily dark skies – there’s no better time to visit this Nordic superstar. To take it all in, hire a car and hit the 828-mile Ring Road route – wending its way along the country’s entire coastal region, it’s one of the world’s most romantic road trips, swishing past the glaciers, geysers and black sand beaches Iceland is so famous for.

Where to stay: There are plenty of cute cabins to book into along the way: we particularly like the look of  this one , touching distance from Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most breathtaking waterfalls. To really hole up and hide away, book into  Deplar Farm : deep in the ravishingly remote, bleak but beautiful Tröllaskagi Peninsula, this is one of Europe’s most isolated lodges – and a stay here truly is a once-in-a-lifetime treat. In Reykjavik, the Edition has warm and inviting rooms, with Italian furnishings made from ash wood and floor-to-ceiling windows that either frame the fjord and Mt. Esja or views of downtown.

For adventurous couples

Forget for a moment that the Whitsundays’ largest inhabited island is positioned right beside Heart Reef (exactly as it sounds: a perfectly heart-shaped coral reef). Asheville, north carolina.

Also in May, the New Wine Festival brings vintners from around the country to Tbilisi . “Long walks in a cobbled maze of balconied neighborhoods offer opportunities to stumble on art nouveau urban architecture and layers of complex history,” Berulava says of Tbilisi. “Indulge in Georgian cuisine, sit in outdoor cafes, slowly sipping wine.”

Situated at the southernmost tip of New Jersey, Cape May is known for its picturesque Victorian architecture, great restaurants, charming hotels, and stunning beaches. As a frequent visitor, I’ve experienced this award-winning coastal small town in all seasons.

Having ranked among the 10 best beaches in New Jersey and the 10 best beaches in the Northeast , the best time to visit Cape May is summer, the area’s high season. But if you stick around for the cooler months, Cape May transforms into an idyllic fall retreat — with less crowds!

How to get to Cape May

To get to Cape May, take Exit 0, the south end of the Garden State Parkway, which runs along the coast of New Jersey. If you’re driving from points north, take this highway to the end of the line. If you're coming from Delaware, take the Cape May - Lewes Ferry to the town (and you can bring your car along, too). Be sure to make reservations.

History and architectural tours

In the fall, the streets of Cape May feature vivid autumn colors, as the mature trees and shrubs create a beautiful backdrop for leisurely strolls and bike rides where visitors can admire the town’s incredible Victorian architecture.
