Where is the rainforest located in Costa Rica?

The jungles of Costa Rica are among those with the greatest biodiversity in the world. It is estimated that the country has 5% of the planet’s species. In Costa Rica, it is possible to find the tropical rain forest in the South Pacific, in the Osa Peninsula and the Corcovado National Park, as well as the Tortuguero National Park in the north. It is also found in the Talamanca mountain range, Monteverde National Park, Arenal Volcano, Braulio Carrillo National Park and the Los Santos Biological Reserve. In some areas in the north, such as the Tenorio Volcano National Park and Rincón de la Vieja, you can experience the rainforest. In the Bijagua area, located in the north of the country, we have an abundant rainforest. It is in this place where we develop our sighting rainforest tours of sloths, toucans, tapirs, frogs and many other wild animals.

Costa Rica Rainforest Tours & Travel

Costa Rica Rainforest Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Costa Rica is famous worldwide for the rich biodiversity of its magnificent rainforests. With zip-lining, canopy tours, hiking, and much more, Costa Rica's rainforests offer something unique to satisfy all nature and wildlife-lovers.

Touring the rainforest, especially in Costa Rica, a whole new world opens up. The vibrant green from centuries of dense water concentration, the intensely beautiful magical sight when the sun manages to break through to the forest floor, the innumerable species of brightly colored birds, monkeys racing deftly through the branches, and countless insects buzzing - all indicating clearly that you are being welcomed into their home, not the other way around.

When you tour Costa Rica , it is an incredible learning opportunity to get to know the history and ecology of it’s many natural areas, and the wildlife within them. Take this chance to get up close and personal with endangered species, and nature’s unbelieveable adaptations to life in the Rainforest.

Rainforests of Costa Rica

For such a small country, Costa Rica is home to numerous rainforests - each exhibiting the fantastically specific microclimates that this particular environment is known for. When you visit the rainforest, it’s important to be respectful of the environment. Because so much of Costa Rica is covered in rainforest, a vast majority of accommodations and businesses operate following strict green and eco-friendly rules.

Some of the main rainforests in Costa Rica include:

1. Tortuguero National Park - Named for the turtles who head here to nest, the best time to visit Tortuguero is July through October which is turtle nesting season. If you come in the off season, however, there’s still plenty to see and do. Boat trips down river canals through the bright green forest are a popular way to get a different view of the rainforest and the many species that make their home there. (Tortuguero is often likened to Venice for its canal system). This is one of the rainiest jungles in Costa Rica, so pack accordingly!

2. Corcovado National Park - located in the Osa Peninsula, this is one of the best places to spot Scarlet Macaws, which are famous for their monogamous mating patterns. This lowland rainforest is set apart so you may also spot other traditionally elusive creatures, including Harpy Eagles and Red Backed Squirrels. Corcovado also encompasses several miles of coastal beach areas, hikes, and is popular for camping.

3. Monteverde Cloud Forest - Popular especially for it’s hanging bridges, hiking trails, and zip lines, the Monteverde Cloud Forest is a common Costa Rica tour activity. It’s here you’ll be most likely to spot the elusive Quetzal, one of South America’s most famous bird species.

Monteverde is one of the best areas for night hikes, as well as for being eye level with the canopy on one of the many hanging bridges. This is perfect for cloud forests - where most of the animal activity is high in the trees, as close as possible to the sun which rarely penetrates the cloud cover, leading to some of the more unique ecological flora and fauna adaptations along the forest floor.

4. Manuel Antonio - For some of the most spectacular scenery in Costa Rica, head to Manuel Antonio. Particularly for the beaches with pristine sand and blue waters, bordered just inland with gorgeous green rainforest. With this comes the resort caveat - this won’t be the most rustic or set apart kind of experience. But if you’re looking for a place to enjoy the delicious fresh air, sounds of lapping waves and distant bird calls of Costa Rica with a cocktail in your hand, this is your paradise.

5. Rincon de la Vieja National Park - Secluded, and definitely off the beaten track, Rincon de la Vieja National Park is perfect for those looking for an adventure. Prepare for a hiking experience where you may well not run into another human being the entire time. Just you and the animals - this also makes this a great spot for photographers and videographers.

6. Arenal Volcano National Park - You may think the volcano is the main thing to see here, and in many ways it is in that it can be spotted rising out of the trees from almost every vantage point in the park. On a clear day, that is. Something not everyone realizes before visiting Arenal is that it’s often shrouded in clouds, and for the safety of tourists hikes up to the top of the volcano (which is still active) are no longer permitted. But don’t despair. Tours of Arenal National Park offer a rich array of activities, from horseback riding to waterfall rappelling.

Wildlife of the Costa Rica Rainforest

From big cats to the smallest birds and bugs, Costa Rica is home to some of the world’s most diverse animal species.

1. Big Cats - One usually thinks of rainforests and thinks brightly colored birds and flowers, along with a monkey or two. It’s easy to forget the jungle cats who also make their home in these sprawling landscapes. Two big cats in particular are indigenous to Costa Rica: Jaguar and  Puma. While your chances of spotting these jungle dwellers on your Costa Rica rainforest tour are slim, your guide will provide context to why these environments suit them and their hunting habits.

2. Tapir - One of the natures funniest looking creatures, tapir are a medium sized mammal recognizable by their short snout and pig like body shape. Tapir are notoriously shy, and have been brought back from the brink of extinction due to extensive conservation efforts. Head to Corcovado National Park for the best chance to glimpse one of these truly unique members of the animal kingdom.

3. Monkeys - Four species of monkey live in the rainforests of Costa Rica. They are the Squirrel Monkey, Spider Monkey, White Faced Capuchin Monkey, and Howler Monkey. To see all four at once you’ll need to visit any one of the following Costa Rica National Parks: Piedras Blancas, Osa Peninsula, and Corcovado. These monkey species are not nocturnal, so you’ll be able to spot them swinging joyfully through the trees as you embark on your Costa Rica rainforest tour.

Birds of the Costa Rica Rainforest

Birding is one of the most popular tour activities in Costa Rica, and for good reason. The brightly colored avians are everywhere to be seen and the forests are home to hundreds of rare and beautiful species. Among those you might encounter are:

1. Toucan - This unique yet highly recognizable bird is literally everywhere in Costa Rica. They are an essential partners to the many species of tree in the rainforest, consuming seeds which they then disperse. This is helpful for the growing patterns, in that there is less competition for sunlight than if the seeds had just dropped straight down.

2. Parrots - A synonymous symbol for the tropics, there are 16 different species of parrot in Costa Rica’s rainforests, three of which are close to the endangered species list. They are typically found in the lower lands, namely around the Osa Peninsula rainforests.

3. Quetzal  - This most beautiful, alluring, and elusive of birds, the Quetzal is truly a famous rainforest dweller. It’s name meaning “sacred” or “precious” in indigenous south american languages including ancient Aztec, this species is particularly known for the ridged crest of feathers atop its head - which add to its regal appearance.

4. Hummingbirds - The world contains over 600 known species of hummingbird, 50 plus of which live in Costa Rica. You will undoubtedly see multiple hummingbirds during your Costa Rica Rainforest Tour. Flitting to and fro, their tiny wings moving at tremendous speeds, they consume more flower nectar than their body weight each day. Visit the Hummingbird Garden in Monteverde National Park for a chance to watch multiple hummingbirds in action.

Top Costa Rica Rainforest Tour Activities

The rainforest in Costa Rica provides the opportunity for incredible experiences, from learning about the unique ecology, to long hikes to the clouds, to spotting elusive creatures. Here are just a few of the amazing experiences you can have on a tour of Costa Rica.

1. Canopy Tours - Costa Rica offers some of the widest variety in canopy tour opportunities - a fantastic way to get to know the rainforest from a completely new vantage point. If you’re afraid of heights, or have a problem with swinging bridges, this activity may pose some challenges.

The longest rainforest canopy bridge in Costa Rica is 984 feet across and is located in Monteverde, a part of the Sky Walk network of bridges. Hanging bridge networks can be found throughout Costa Rica’s rainforests, and are perhaps one of the most quintessential Costa Rica tour experiences.

Nearly 90% of organisms in the rainforest live in the canopy - a result of the lack of sunlight that penetrates to the forest floor - and if it does, it happens far too irregularly for the animals living here to depend on it. For this reason, exploring the canopy completely adds to your experience of the rainforest, allowing you to see so much more activity.

2. Zipline - Another adventurous way to experience the rainforest canopy, Costa Rica is famous for ziplines. This activity involves soaring through the trees, attached by ropes from around your waist to a long line strung between platforms. It’s a thrilling experience - imagine that you’re getting just a tiny idea what the fast moving monkeys and other tree dwelling creatures see as they race through the branches.

3. Night Hike - The activity in the rainforest doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. In fact some of the more bizarre, elusive, and fascinating creatures come out at night. Seeing the rainforest through a flashlight is an entirely different experience than walking the trails and bridges during the day. For one thing, you feel far less in control as your vision is obstructed and you realize that the wildlife you’re observing can see far superiorly in the dark. It’s unsettling but a fantastic reminder of the adaptability and power of nature.

On a night hike, you’ll likely encounter sloths, the ridiculously adorable Kinkajou, Olingos - which look like a combination of many different animals, as well as racoons, and the odd active monkey. For those interested in creepy crawlies, snakes, poisonous tree frogs, insects as only the rainforest can provide, and giant tarantulas are also common on a Costa Rica night hike tour.

Night hikes in Costa Rica are particular popular and easy to find around Arenal Volcano and in Monteverde National Park.

Photography Tips for the Costa Rica Rainforest

The rainforest is fascinating and begs to be photographed. Whether you’re an amateur or professional, you will certainly find many different subjects along your tour through the rainforest. The weather and water can sometimes create issues, so be sure you exercise proper camera care as you explore the many wonderful parts of the rainforest.

1. Bring a lens cloth - And have it readily accessible before you begin shooting. Jungle environments are often 100% humid, and this can cause extreme fogging on your lens. While this can create interesting effects, it’s most likely not the effect you’re looking for.

2. Use a strap that’s made of soft, durable, water-resistant material. This is a bit a personal preference. However, as you’ll be hiking through dense rainforest, in very warm, humid weather, getting sweatier and not drying off, the generic strap to your DSLR may get irritating and itchy quickly. You can fashion your own strap fairly easily, using a softer cloth material which will be much more comfortable throughout the long days of rainforest hiking.

3. Get to know the animals. Familiarizing yourself with various species patterns and habits will reveal certain facets of their personalities you may want to capture on film, as well as where the best spots to find them are, and what time of day or night. Also try to determine in advance any animals you’re looking forward to photographing and ask your tour guide if they have any special tips.

4. Bring a macro lens. If you’re not as comfortable with different lenses, using the automatic macro setting on your DSLR will suffice, but using the official lens will transform your photographs even more. Particularly for shooting the unbelievable plant and insect life, being able to add creative focal points and composition with a macro lens is a wonderful way to elevate your photos.

5. Be respectful and patient. It can be frustrating for a wild animal to not sit in the perfect spot long enough for you to get the best shot possible. But patience is a virtue when it comes to wildlife photography. Try and book a tour that will return to various spots at different times of day, as this will increase your chances of capturing a truly wonderful image of that elusive species.

6. Don’t eliminate people from all your photos. While the wildlife is certainly the focal point of a journey through the rainforest, a human presence can create a powerful and interesting dynamic. Your entire comment and composition will change, and also you’ll be able to look back and remember the people on your Costa Rica rainforest tour (hopefully with fondness!).

Amazon Lodges

The Amazon can be rugged, but staying there doesn’t have to be. Our Amazon rainforest tours are based from remote, upscale lodges where expert naturalist guides lead active explorations of nature, wildlife and culture. Strategically located within the Amazon rainforest, comfortable lodges provide unparalleled access to your surroundings. Jungle eco lodges are rooted in the region’s environment and employ cutting edge sustainability practices.

Amazon lodges like La Selva Amazon Eco-Lodge or Napo Wildlife Center in Ecuador and Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica in Peru exemplify the ethos of sustainable travel. These award-winning lodges, and others like them, spring from relationships with local indigenous people and maintain community ties that bind them to the landscape and its inhabitants. Our tours utilize only the best Amazon lodges hand-picked by the AdventureSmith team.

Part of an ecotourism project initiated by the Anangu Kichwa Community, the Napo Wildlife Center features 20 luxury cabanas along Anangucocha Lake, adjacent to the Napo river, and is surrounded by a 53,000-acre rainforest biosphere reserve within Yasuni National Park.

Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica is an ecological lodge in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest, adjacent to the Tambopata National Park. Since 1975, the lodge has been instrumental in the scientific study of the rainforest.

Located 60 miles from Coca down the Napo River in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon basin, La Selva features 19 staterooms with the largest accommodations of any Ecuador rainforest lodge.

What Travelers Say About Their Amazon Rainforest Tour

The birding was fantastic, made better by the extremely helpful bird guide. We have birded in Central America, Indonesia, Africa and all over the US and we think he was the best bird guide we have ever had! We had an amazing time on this trip! Additionally, information provided by AdventureSmith was perfect! Taylor, our Adventure Specialist, was always available for any questions and very responsive to our requests.

I was thoroughly pleased with my trip and AdventureSmith. Leslie was terrific in helping me plan my trip. Her advice was perfect, and she responded to my questions in a timely manner. Sacha Lodge was excellent. It was well run and kept you busy all day long. The naturalist guide & our native guide were terrific. The towers and canopy walk and the tree tower were my favorites.

This was an amazing trip filled with experiences and now, memories. AdventureSmith was helpful, professional and experienced every step of the way. If we ever take an "adventure trip" again, AdventureSmith will be my first contact to make. Thank you for....everything!!

The spontaneous whale watching, nearly every day at some point, made the trip memorable. That the captain could slow down and maneuver in an area to extend our viewing is not something that could happen on an aircraft-carrier-sized cruise ship.

The overall trip experience was extremely good. Every one of our guides were great and had good knowledge of their specific areas. Loved the Napo Wildlife Center and in particular our, guide, Remigio, was very personable.

La Selva was beautiful and remote. Staff was VERY helpful and friendly. Superior guide, Paul. Food 5 star. Very interesting wildlife and vegetation. Loved dealing with Arielle.

We had an amazing time on this trip! All of the reservations were as stated and everything was on time. The lodge was beautiful and the food was absolutely awesome! The staff at the lodge was friendly and efficient. The bird guide was one of the BEST we have ever had, and we have birded in many places around the world! We were very happy with the accommodations, including the stay in Copa. Everyone we met was pleasant and the trip was very smooth.

Accommodations Review

How they were able to provide the style and comfort in a jungle lodge was absolutely amazing! The beds were comfortable, the accommodations were beautiful and the wildlife was everywhere!

Meals Review

5 star meals on every occasion. They even made a birthday cake for my wife's birthday! It was hard to believe the quality of food made in the middle of the Amazon rain forest!

Crew & Guides Review

Our bird guide, Rodrigo, was FANTASTIC! He was highly knowledgeable of all the wildlife in the area and could find birds by habitat, sight and sound. He was knowledgeable about every species and was very enthusiastic in providing the best experience for us! We have birded in Central America, Indonesia, Africa and all over the US and we think he was the best bird guide we have ever had! He was so well spoken and a pleasure to be around!

Itinerary Review

The birding was fantastic, made better by the extremely helpful bird guide. His knowledge was fantastic and he spoke English very well! The number of species of birds was quite amazing and the lodge itself was beautiful with the best staff!

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

The information provided by AdventureSmith was perfect! Everything was organized well, and there were no issues on anything arranged through them. All the information provided was spot on! The surprise gift the week before leaving was also a pleasant surprise. There were absolutely NO hiccups on any of the trip parts! We were very happy with the service and plan top use them again soon! We just wanted to thank you for the great adventure. Taylor, our Adventure Specialist, was always available for any questions and very responsive to our requests. Even while the trip was in progress and we had travel issues from the airlines that were not part of the AdventureSmith package, she made contact and kept us informed! Thank you so much! We have already started forming a group trip to the Galapagos with family and friends!

Traveler Advice

Follow all of the advice given by AdventureSmith. The insects are not a big issue and although there are a few bugs at the lodge, it is extremely clean and the food is awesome. They will also cater to dietary needs.

I was thoroughly pleased with my trip and AdventureSmith. Sacha Lodge was excellent. It was well run and kept you busy all day long.  The naturalist guide & our native guide were terrific. The towers and canopy walk and the tree tower were my favorites.

My room was very spacious and quite nice. The only comment I made on the lodge evaluation was to allow more time after breakfast and before the first activity of the day. We basically had 1/2 hour to eat breakfast, brush teeth, etc. and be ready to leave on our morning activity.

Naturalist Guide - Pablo - excellent guide, very knowledgeable. Native Guide - Shanshui - fantastic guide, could spot birds and animals from great distances, explained medicinal plants, helped take pictures for me, and he spoke good English even though he was a little shy. The representatives for Sacha Lodge met me at the airport ticket counters and guided me through check-in. Everything went very smoothly.

Leslie was terrific in helping me plan my trip. Her advice was perfect, and she responded to my questions in a timely manner. The written itinerary was thorough with all the emergency contact names and numbers. Leslie helped me throughout the planning process. I made my own international flight and hotel arrangements, but all of the internal flights and itinerary were provided by AdventureSmith.

Don’t overpack. Biodegradable shampoo, conditioner, and soap are provided so you do not need to bring your own.

This was an amazing trip filled with experiences and now, memories. AdventureSmith was helpful, professional and experienced every step of the way. The Galapagos had been on my bucket list for a long time. Last year when I started putting this trip together with AdventureSmith, I became incredibly excited about the possibilities for the other adventures. I most enjoyed the Lares Trek and the lodges we stayed in. Plus, we had a wonderful guide, Miguel who made it that much better. My husband's favorite was hiking Huayna Pichu.

Mountain Lodges of Peru -- lovely lodges; unique, carefully cared for by "locals"; wonderful concept.

El Mercado, Cusco -- good location; very accommodating with us being in and out (stored our luggage 3 different times); nice music in the evenings; street/neighborhood noise could often be heard; tea, coffee and water always available.

Libertador, Puno -- lovely hotel; on a "peninsula" so no options for meals (unless taking a taxi into Puno) except there; water bottles should always be available at no cost.

Napo Wildlife Center, Amazon -- fascinating experience; wonderful concept of the local tribe running the center.

The food in Peru was amazing; even "simple things" had wonderful taste. Each place was accommodating about me being vegetarian (even though I did not list it...I always find something to eat and I don't like to make a "deal" about it).

It was interesting to experience a Pachamanca meal during the Lares Trek; the 3rd lodge had truly amazing food and good thing we didn't stay there long or we would have gained weight. Nice variety at every one (minimal variety at the Lares Trek lodges, but understandable; they would make eggs any way a person wanted).

Thank you for having breakfast provided at every hotel, including the Libertador! Libertador -- main dining room was "fancy" (and expensive) and we ended up walking out of there and just going to the bar for dinner both nights. Amazon -- not "memorable" but there was variety at every meal.

Lares Trek -- we felt we got very lucky with Miguel. Miguel was a fountain of knowledge, personable, "ready for any event", and we could just tell he enjoys what he does and is very very good at it.

Lake Titicaca/Puno -- it was enjoyable to have a personal guide on the boat when we went to the reed islands and to Taquile Island; we got a more "up close and personal" tour of the peoples; and the trout lunch was delicious.

Napo Wildlife Center -- Delphin - he grew up in the jungle; very interesting to listen to him tell stories and history, point out flora and fauna along with the boat paddlers; he made that adventure "come alive."

AdventureSmith was with us every single step of the way; countless emails were answered; serious and goofy questions were always thoughtfully answered; suggestions were provided as being "suggestions" and not "must do"; I had the greatest confidence and trust in AdventureSmith. We were provided documentation, packing lists, vaccine suggestions and info, reading material. I felt thoroughly prepared due to AdventureSmith.

Absolutely recommend! Looking back over the trip and over the last year of planning, I was very smart in choosing AdventureSmith. If we ever take an "adventure trip" again, AdventureSmith will be my first contact to make. Thank you for....everything!!

Use AdventureSmith! It takes an incredible amount of planning (and $$), but it is totally worth the planning. Think about what YOU want to do and see. It may be different from "the beaten path", but that's ok. It's about YOUR trip and what you want to do.

The advance literature proclaimed the company sought to exceed our expectations, and they all did in every category. From the ship, the southern Alaska passages, the activities, the Un-Cruise company, down to every individual crew member, every part of this "adventure" was much better than we had imagined. As one example, we were surprised almost immediately buy how engaging and helpful the crew was. Not once did we see a crew member annoyed by a needy passenger or a question asked too many times. That must be a company goal!

The Wilderness Explorer was great. Although the cabins were small, we had what we needed and the public spaces were sized to handle the passengers comfortably, and there were so many activities we didn't spend much time in our rooms. The ship cruised smoothly in the inland passages, and even an overnight relocation cruise didn't interrupt sleep. Most enjoyed any kayaking activity off the boat. The launch/retrieve platform is an awesome modification, and probably what makes launching 10-15 kayaks in a short time possible. We greatly appreciated being able to rent the slogging boots on the boat.

No complaints whatsoever. We even had a pastry chef on our ship.

Might be tempted to say AdventureSmith over prepared us, given the extraordinarily good weather we had. We had only one day of rain in the entire week, and then it was in the 50's. Almost 70 in Glacier Bay for glacier kayaking. Personal to Aaron Gaines:  Thanks for the little 50th anniversary gift you had left in our cabin. On that Friday (Aug 7) we got to celebrate by kayaking in front of a glacier, on a beautiful day, with ORCAS swimming about a quarter mile away! Priceless!

The overall trip experience was extremely good. Every one of our guides were great and had good knowledge of their specific areas. Loved the Napo Wildlife Center and in particular our, guide, Remigio, was very personable. He really made it very enjoyable and went out of his way to show us different things. Also loved Machu Picchu and Cusco and our guide Elizabeth.

The food was fine at all the locations.

Our guides were excellent - especially Remigio at Napo and Elizabeth in Cusco. On the Galapagos cruise and Origin ship the two guides, Fabrizio and Pepe were excellent. (note - Eclipse ship cruise was cancelled due to engine trouble)

Definitely would recommend. Please pass on a huge thank you to Andrew for his expertise and suggestions and for his immediate response to our cruise 'problem' which turned out to be a blessing in disguise as we think Origin was perhaps better than Eclipse!

Remember that it is cold in the mountains in the evenings, even though you are on the equator and so it is important to bring warm clothes.

La Selva was beautiful and remote. Staff was VERY helpful and friendly. Superior guide, Paul. Food 5 star. Very interesting wildlife and vegetation. Most unusual, night hike through jungle. La Selva is all jungle. VERY hot and humid with no space air conditioned. If clients are highly sensitive to this, It could negatively affect the experience. Not very buggy, surprisingly, very few mosquitoes at this time of year. Some fitness useful, but all activities only mild to moderate difficulty. Longest hike no more than 2 miles.

5 star accommodations for a remote jungle site. NO air conditioned areas in entire resort.

Very good with dietary restrictions.

Paul was excellent. Very friendly and enthusiastic. Great English skills. Would love to have him on a re-visit.

Transportation Review

All worked well. Useful to have all fees, etc. paid in advance.

Loved dealing with Arielle.

After all of the fun, you’re sure to need some fuel. You’ll head out for an authentic Puerto Rican lunch, before you are dropped off at your hotel.

Tour Information & Booking

Puerto rico travel guide, getting there –.

By far the easiest way to get to Puerto Rico is to fly, as it’s an island (rather, comprised of various). However, if you’re coming from the Dominican Republic or Virgin Islands, you can head over by ferry. PR’s main airport is Luis Muñoz International Airport/San Juan Airport (SJU), located in Carolina.

With various nonstop flights from the US every day, you’ll find the most affordable ones are those departing from gateway cities located in the south and east of the US. This makes sense, as it’s closer to the island. Miami and New York are the most common departure airports, though you’ll find flights through all major US carriers such as US Airways, JetBlue, and Continental.

Getting Around –

San Juan is a very easy city to move around in. The most “touristy” areas are perfect for walking, and we found it overall quite a safe city to do so in. In fact, you could realistically walk for the entirety of your stay in the city, depending on what you want to see.

Walking – If you really want to get to know the city, walking is the best way to do it. If you’re in Old San Juan, you’ll find the hottest attractions all within 5 or so blocks. Condado, Isla Verde, and Ocean Park are all great options as well, and here you can walk to beaches, restaurants, and some of the best shopping spots.

Rental Car – We personally recommend renting a car for at least a day, so you can check out beaches and other parts of the island not within walking distance. However, as you can see by the tours on our guide, there are many situations where transportation comes included in the tour price. Driving here is pretty intuitive and not much different from driving in most cities in the US.

Trolley – Another plus goes to Old San Juan, for having their free trolley service. This service will transport you with style, to and from the top attractions in this part of the city. Running from 7am to 7pm during the week and 9am to 7pm on the weekend, it’s a nice alternative if you don’t feel like walking.

Taxi – Taxis are of course an option, and a more convenient one if you don’t want to hassle with having to find parking with a rental car. You’ll find these taxis lined up outside the airport, near hotels, and most main tourist attractions.

Bike – With the amazing weather San Juan has the vast majority of the year, why not get some fresh air and bike? The city has created designated bike lanes which are really fun to use along the beach.

Where to Stay –

With so many great neighborhoods to stay in, it can be hard to decide which one is right for you.

Old San Juan – Old San Juan is our personal favorite, and is the top in terms of sightseeing. Almost all of the top tourist attractions are located here, such as the San Juan Bautista Catedral, Puerta de San Juan, La Fortaleza, Castillo de San Cristobal, El Morro, Paseo De La Princesa, and much more. Not only that, but you have one of the best beaches, upscale dining spots, and fun bars. Nightlife here is practically incomparable to anywhere else on the island.

Condado – If you’re going with the entire family, Condado is probably the best spot. It’s very close to some of the best beaches in the country, with plenty of outdoor activities, restaurants, and more. A good portion of the hotels found here are more “luxurious” with rooftop terraces, pools, spas, and an ocean view from your room.

Ocean Park – If your main reason for going to San Juan is the tropical vibes and beaches, then Ocean Park may be where you want to stay. The beach is within walking distance and very close to Condado and Isla Verde. However, you’ll definitely need to get a taxi or other form of transporation to get to Old San Juan. This is a “younger” area with plenty of nightlife and exciting bars to explore.

Isla Verde – Are you looking to get away to San Juan for a romantic vacation? If so, then Isla Verde is a great option. There are plenty of charming hotels, fine dining restaurants, bustling nightclubs, and more. We recommend starting off the morning with a romantic stroll down the beach!

Restaurants and Eating Out –

You can find just about any type of cuisine in San Juan, as it is a cosmopolitan city. It all depends on what you’re looking for.

Fine Dining – Marmalade is a top option if you want to go upscale. French, Caribbean, and Spanish flavors are all combined here. With modern trends and interesting visions, you’re sure to try something new here. 1919 is sophisticated seafood, from passionfruit curd to coconut ganache, this beachfront restaurant is supremely romantic and high-class.

Local –  You simply can’t visit San Juan without trying the local cuisine. Hecho en Casa or “homemade” is definitely aptly-named. The family-owned spot prides themselves on their comida criolla that the country is known for. As everything is sourced locally, the flavors are rich and pure.

La Casita Blanca is another authentic, traditional restaurant that has a menu which changes every day with 10-12 dishes posted on a whiteboard. However, you can’t get more authentic than a chinchorro. These are little food “kiosks” that simply offer the best-tasting, traditional dishes in the city.

International – We love the way they’ve managed to combine Asian and Creole flavors in the restaurant, Shibo. We love their sushi bar as well, with ultra-fresh fish and fusion cocktails like the sake sangria! If you’re in the mood for some tacos, head on over to Acapulco Taqueria Mexicana. The tacos de pollo al pastor and the chilaquiles are our favorites!

Nightlife and Entertainment –

The vibrant nightlife found here is never-ending, between casinos, nightclubs, lounges, and more.

Old San Juan – As we mentioned previously, Old San Juan is an idyllic spot for nightlife. Just walking around at night is full of music, smiling faces, and a general liveliness. The wrought iron lanterns illuminate the cobblestone streets, offering a more romantic vibe. Salsa, flamenco, and the smells of delicious food fill the air.

Try heading to South Fortaleza, San Sebastian, or Calle del Cristo for the best bar and food options. However, you’ll also find local artists, live music, and kiosks dotting this area.

New City – This area consists of Condado, Ocean Park, and Isla Verde/Carolina. While Old San Juan tends to be a bit more “old-school” and laidback with their nightlife, these districts are filled with trendy hotspots, casinos, nightclubs, and generally more flashiness. Isla Verde Avenue is lined with fun places, such as the upbeat Brava nightclub or Chico Cabaret at Fairmont El San Juan Hotel.

West Coast – Perhaps you’re the kind of person who wants to keep their swimsuit and flipflops on the entire trip. If so, then the west coast is the place for you. Rincon features some of the best beachfront bars in the country. Tamboo Bar offers unmatched beach views and everyone is so nice here.

Bonus – Try out kayaking at night in the Laguna del Condado! If you prefer you can also paddleboard! With LED lights attached, you’ll have fun with the rest of your small group and see the bright city lights reflecting off the blue waters as you paddle the night away.

Weather –

San Juan’s climate really doesn’t vary a whole lot throughout the year. For example, the temperatures tend to always stay between 72 degrees and 89 degrees Fahrenheit. You won’t often find it hotter or colder than that.

As they are a bunch of islands, it can be pretty humid throughout almost the entire year. From the beginning of June to the end of August, it can also get relatively windy, too. The wetter season is from April 24 th to December 2 nd , which isn’t really the best time to go. In fact, the best time to visit San Juan is from early December to mid-April. The weather during this time of year is sunny, warm, and not windy or rainy.

Attractions –

San Juan has a very interesting history, and it’s something that we highly recommend exploring. There are various castles and forts that are not only impressive visually, but inside as well. Castillo San Cristobal is over 500 years old, and is actually the biggest Spanish fort in the “New World”. Castillo San Felipe del Morro or “El Morro” is a whopping 6 levels tall!

Make sure to check out El Cuartel de Ballaja, after trekking through El Morro. Built between 1854 and 1864 as a way to house Spanish soldiers and their families, it’s a museum, café, restaurant, dance school, and offices today.

If you happen to be staying in Condado, stop by Fortin Geronimo which is a small yet very interesting fort located inside of Caribe Hilton. Built in the 17 th century, it now risks falling into the ocean so this may be the only chance you get to see it.

Other Notable Pieces of Architecture – La Fortaleza/Palacio Santa Catalina and Casa Blanca were the first buildings built in the city, which are obviously very important and very beautiful. Today, the country’s governor resides in the Palacio Santa Catalina. Casa Blanca was originally created to be the home of Ponce de Leon, the first governor of Puerto Rico. Today, we recommend taking a self-guided tour of the gorgeous gardens and inside the mansion.

You don’t have to be religious to appreciate Cathedral San Juan Bautista. As the second-oldest church in all of the Americas, it’s quite the sight to see. Not only that, but the remains of explorer Juan Ponce de Leon rest inside the cathedral.

Paseo de La Princesa – If you have some time and are looking to take a low-key stroll by yourself or with your significant other, this is an excellent option. The 19 th -century promenade goes all throughout Old San Juan, with colonial architecture, fountains, street food, and cobblestone streets and trees with views of the bay in the background.

Hang Out on The Beach – There are various beaches to choose from, and no matter where you stay, you’ll likely have a beach within walking distance. Condado Beach is very popular with families, and draws some parallels with Miami with its luxury high-rise resorts surrounding it.

Balneario del Escambron is another solid option, with clean sand, relatively calm waters, and is oftentimes easy to find a spot on the beach.

Museums – San Juan is a very artistic city, and their museums are some of the best places to see some of it firsthand! The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico is the most popular, with a massive 24 exhibition galleries to see. The Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art is a fine alternative, though is much newer than the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico.

For more of a history lesson, you need to see the Museo de Las Americas. Here, you’ll learn all about the history of the Americas, with 4 galleries. It’s obviously a smaller museum, but is definitely worth checking out their Indigenous America section.

Tips –

  • Make sure you keep mosquito repellent handy. You’re going to be on a tropical island in the Caribbean. As you can probably imagine, there are going to be quite a few mosquitos flying around.
  • If you’re only going to San Juan for a short period of time (like a weekend), we recommend hanging out mainly in Old San Juan. You can get around by walking everywhere in this zone, and is home to most of the notable tourist spots and general points of interest.
  • If you can leave San Juan, do check out the surrounding areas and the rain forests. For a great way to see the beaches and forests, go by horseback. There a lots of tours by horseback in Puerto Rico that you can see areas that few visitors get to see. Be sure to see Puerto Rico from the water and take a sunset cruise at sunset. See old San Juan Bay from the water. Speaking of water, be sure to check out the coral reefs with a snorkeling tour .
  • Try to keep an umbrella with you when in the city. While almost every month is sunny, it tends to rain quite frequently. From April to November is the rainy season, and from June to November there is a hurricane season.
  • Puerto Rico uses the US dollar, and you don’t need your US passport. That’s right, with PR’s political status, if you’re a US citizen you can travel to and from PR with just your license! If you’re not a US citizen, it’ll be just like you’re traveling to the US – whatever you need to enter the United States is what you’ll need in Puerto Rico.

Why Cruise the Amazon?

Amazon River cruises take adventurous explorers on one of the world’s most rewarding wildlife expeditions. Journey deep into the heart of the largest rainforest on Earth on a boat trip down the Amazon, a mystical realm of boundless biodiversity where physical and spiritual worlds entwine, a primeval domain still ruled by the jaguar , home to giant snakes , towering trees and uncontacted tribes hiding in plain sight.

The best Amazon cruises explore the remote reaches of this fairytale forest. Witness the playful pink river dolphins in the headwaters of the Amazon in Peru ‘s Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve aboard some of the most luxurious Amazon cruises available, or see the kaleidoscopic colors of the clay licks in the Ecuadorian Oriente . Why not try boating the Amazon River’s lesser-traveled backwaters in Bolivia and explore three kinds of tropical forest, or maybe catch a rare glimpse of the Amazonian manatee in the Anavilhanas National Park of the Brazilian Amazon . What will you discover on your Amazon River tour?

Amazon Cruises

Our hand-picked portfolio of traditional Amazon River boats and small Amazon river cruise ships has been carefully chosen to include remarkable vessels operated by only the most trusted of partners, preeminent pioneers of the region who offer exceptional itineraries, unrivaled knowledge and utmost levels of service.

Amazon Rainforest Weather: Seasons & Best Time To Visit

What our customers are saying.

Happy Couple On Skiff In The Amazon

What Is One Thing I Shouldn’t Miss In The Amazon?

Of all the amazing sights in the Amazon, the Meeting of Waters in Brazil shouldn’t be missed. At the confluence between the black waters of the Rio Negro and the sandy whitewater of the Solimões River the two rivers’ waters run side by side without much mixing for over 6 kilometers (3.7 miles).

When Is The Best Time Of Year To Go To The Amazon?

The best time of year to visit the Amazon is during the shoulder season between the wet and dry seasons (varies by country). At this time of year river levels remain high, allowing Amazon river cruises to still navigate deep into the rainforest, and the fine weather draws out much of the wildlife.

If seeing the Amazon rainforest at its lushest and getting up close to lots of birds and mammals (and enjoying slightly cooler temperatures) sounds most attractive, then the wet season with its higher river levels might be your best choice.

If jungle hikes, fishing for piranha and other Amazon River fish species , or spotting exotic migratory birds appeals most to you, while still having the chance to see capuchin monkeys , kinkajou, and other mammals, you might be happier choosing the warmer, dry season when water levels are lower.

Our guests are awed by the Amazon at whatever time of year they visit. If you can’t decide, perhaps the best solution is to choose one season this year and the other in the future!

Is The Amazon A Good Family Destination?

An Amazon vacation is a great option for adventurous families with adaptable kids – after all, where better to inspire and educate them about the natural world! Bear in mind younger children may be affected by the humidity levels, and noisy little ones may reduce the chances of spotting wildlife.

Many of our Amazon guides have children themselves and are skilled in keeping young ones entertained, and are naturally experts in spotting any potential natural dangers you may encounter. It should be noted many Amazon river cruises have minimum age requirements of 7 and above, but jungle lodges and private charters are often more flexible.

Can You Swim In The Amazon River?

Swimming in the main channels of the Amazon river is generally not advised due to strong currents and boat traffic. Swimming in smaller tributaries and lakes is safer (especially the Amazon’s blackwater rivers ), but always follow the safety advice of your guide.

What Activities Can People Do In The Amazon Rainforest?

Most people head to the Amazon to spot wildlife, and this can be done on daytime jungle walks, from canopy walkways and lookout towers, or on nighttime boat safaris. Other common Amazon Rainforest activities include piranha fishing and local community visits.

As previously mentioned, more adventurous travelers may swim in the Amazon (sometimes with pink river dolphins!) or go kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, or even tree climbing. In certain parts of the Amazon, float plane flights can also be arranged to get a real bird’s-eye view of the rainforest.

How Much Does An Amazon Cruise Cost?

The cost of an Amazon cruise typically depends on itinerary length, boat comfort level and cabin category, although seasonal and single supplements may also apply. Short cruises of 4 days cost between $900 – $4,400 pp, and longer cruises of 7+ days from $1,800 – $9,600 pp based on double occupancy.

Some other Amazon river cruise cost factors to consider:

  • If you wish to privately charter an Amazon river boat , costs can be significantly more, but can actually work out cheaper per person if your group fills the boat.
  • There are also additional costs involved in accessing the remote parts of the Amazon when cruises depart from, namely the domestic flights to Iquitos (Peru), Coca (Ecuador), Trinidad (Bolivia), Manaus or Santarém (Brazil).
  • Port fees and entrances to the national parks are typically included in your cruise cost.
  • For those considering a luxury Amazon cruise, Rainforest Cruises are proud to offer a best-rate guarantee thanks to our unique relationships with operators.
  • To get your cruise cheaper, keep apprised of the latest Amazon river cruise deals .
