In a whirlwind of distortion and raw energy, ’90s alt-rockers Pixies conquered the stage at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage on June 8th, leaving the audience both exhilarated and in awe. The legendary alternative rock band, known for their influential sound that helped shape the 90s music scene, proved that they still possess the same electrifying prowess that captivated audiences decades ago.

The quartet, fronted by lead singer and guitarist Black Francis, and flanked by guitarist Joey Santiago, drummer David Lovering, and new bassist Emma Richardson (Band of Skulls), had little to say between songs as they blazed through a 25-song set that featured a deep and varied look into their already decades-long career.

As the lights dimmed and the crowd erupted into cheers, the unmistakable chords of surf-rock masterpiece “Cecilia Ann” filled the air, signaling the beginning of an unforgettable night. Lead singer Black Francis’s distinctive vocals soared above the frenetic guitar riffs, instantly transporting the audience back to the heyday of alternative rock.

The setlist was a carefully curated journey through Pixies’ illustrious career, seamlessly blending classics like “Here Comes Your Man” and “Where Is My Mind?” with newer tracks from their recent albums. Each song was delivered with a raw intensity that showcased the band’s unparalleled musicianship and chemistry on stage.

Guitarist Joey Santiago’s blistering solos added an extra layer of intensity to the performance, while new bassist Emma Richardson and drummer David Lovering provided a solid foundation, keeping the rhythm tight and driving the music forward with relentless energy.

Highlights of the night included spine-tingling renditions of “Gouge Away” and “Wave of Mutilation,” during which the crowd erupted into a frenzy. The band’s dynamic stage presence and infectious energy kept the audience fully engaged from start to finish, with not a single dull moment throughout the entire set.

As the final notes faded away and the band took their bows, it was clear that Pixies had once again proven why they are considered one of the greatest alternative rock bands of all time. With their masterful musicianship, raw energy, and timeless appeal, Pixies delivered a concert experience that will be remembered for years to come.

Opening the show was indie rock journeymen Modest Mouse who ignited the crowd with their signature blend of indie rock and raw emotion. From the moment frontman Isaac Brock’s gravelly voice pierced the air, the audience was captivated, drawn into a world where introspection meets unbridled energy.

The band kicked off the set with “The Stars Are Projectors,” from their classic 2000 LP The Moon & Antarctica , setting the tone for a night of musical exploration and catharsis. With each strum of the guitar and crash of the drums, Modest Mouse transported us to the heart of their discography, weaving seamlessly between old favorites and tracks from their newer albums.

Highlights of the night included “Float On,” the band’s breakout hit that had everyone singing along at the top of their lungs, and “Dashboard,” with its infectious rhythm driving the crowd into a storm of excitement. But it wasn’t just the hits that stole the show—deep cuts like “Gravity Rides Everything” and “Dramamine” showcased Modest Mouse’s versatility and songwriting prowess, reminding us why they’ve remained a staple of the indie scene for three decades.

Beyond the music, the band’s stage presence was magnetic. Isaac Brock’s enigmatic performance style kept all eyes on him, while the rest of the band members—Tom Peloso, Russell Higbee, Ben Massarella, Simon O’Connor, and Damon Cox—brought their own brand of energy to the stage, feeding off the audience’s excitement and giving it back tenfold.

As the night drew to a close with an encore featuring “Shit Luck,” there was a palpable sense of connection between band and audience—a shared experience that transcended the confines of the venue. Modest Mouse didn’t just put on a concert; they created a moment in time, leaving us exhilarated and hungry for more.

Pixies & Modest Mouse Tickets from $47

Pixies have gained their fan base since the late 80s influencing artists like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, the Strokes, Weezer, among many.  Coming from different music inspirations such as punk rock, religious music, folk and country, Pixies was formed in 1986, creating songs with stranger lyrics and touching on unusual topics. They grew popularity in the US, but even more in Europe. The band went through breakups and solo projects but eventually reunited in 2003. To date, they continue to widen their audience with the inclusion of the younger generations who enjoy their sound which is considered unorthodox. With seven studio albums, they have placed their name among the all-time favorite alternative rock bands. Their music is known for being both quiet and loud at the same time. Each Pixies show is one of a kind as the band plays whatever they want in no fixed order.

The GRAMMY Award-nominated Modest Mouse is an American rock band formed in 1993. Inspired during a heavy metal show, the band started with Isaac Brock, Eric Judy, and Jeremiah Green. Their music, as admitted by the band, is strongly influenced by Pixies. “Float On” is considered to be their biggest hit, topping the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 2005.

Opening the concert is American singer-songwriter Cat Power, who is most recognized for her eighth studio album, Jukebox, which was published by Matador Records on January 22, 2008. The album reached its highest position at number 12 on the Billboard 200 album list and number 4 on the French album chart.

The concert series is a combined celebration for these bands. Modest Mouse will commemorate the 20th anniversary of their beloved album Good News for People Who Love Bad News. Cat Power is continuously gaining popularity with her 2022 full-length album covering Bob Dylan's 1966 performance at the Royal Albert Hall. With the addition of bassist Paz Lenchantin, who formally took over Kim Deal's position in 2016, the Pixies continue with their style evolution.

With the three biggest names in indie rock on one stage, this concert is definitely one for the books!

About Pixies

Pixies have been acclaimed as the most influential, pioneering band of the late 80s alt/rock movement, having served as a major influence for artists like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, the Strokes, Weezer, and many more.  And today, a whole new generation of music fans has been discovering and embracing the band’s “loudquietloud” signature sound.  Quirky, catchy melodies have always been Pixies’ calling card; seven genre-defining studio albums, including the Gold-certified Surfer Rosa , and the iconic Platinum Doolittle , considered one of the all-time, quintessential alt/rock albums.  Sell-out crowds all over the globe, Pixies’ live shows are unadulterated magic, simultaneously electrifying and lo-fi.  Seventy-five minutes of the band playing anything they want, in whatever order they want, the classics and the new gems.  And no two Pixies shows are ever the same.

About Modest Mouse

Having recently completed a sold out 25th anniversary tour for their breakthrough album, 1997’s The Lonesome Crowded West and played a summer ’23 run with Pixies and Cat Power, Modest Mouse continues to prove themselves to be one of the most consistent live acts today. Modest Mouse released their highly anticipated new album, The Golden Casket, on June 25, 2021 via Epic Records. The Golden Casket heralds another new chapter in the GRAMMY® Award-nominated multi platinum band’s unpredictable evolution. Produced with Dave Sardy and Jacknife Lee in Los Angeles and in Modest Mouse’s studio in Portland, the album hovers in the liminal space between raw punk power and experimental studio science, frontman Isaac Brock explores themes ranging from the degradation of our psychic landscapes and invisible technology, to fatherhood. The twelve tracks behave like amorphous organisms, undergoing dramatic mutations and mood swings that speak to the chronic tug-of-war between hope and despair that plays out in Brock’s head.

About Cat Power

With a catalogue of songwriting that’s unparalleled in the worlds of indie rock and American music at large—spanning several decades and ten studio albums—Marshall’s work as Cat Power has defied genre and convention, her legacy rippling through the work of a wide range of contemporary musical luminaries ranging from Lana Del Rey, Clairo, and Soccer Mommy to Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Angel Olsen. There’s a rawness and immediacy to Marshall’s music that has stood the test of time, with every new musical missive from her as essential as what’s come before it.

Photos and a review of The Pixies in Toronto

[Ross MacDonald came in from Ottawa to catch The Pixies. – AC]

In the summer, there is no better venue to catch a concert than Toronto’s Budweiser Stage . However, on Saturday evening (8 June), the weather was far from perfect, with temperatures hovering around 15 degrees and a constant drizzle, mother nature was trying to put a damper on the night’s festivities. But fans of the Pixies  and Modest Mouse  were certainly up for the challenge.

pixies tour toronto

While waiting for Modest Mouse to take the stage, fans on the lawn were mostly in ponchos or holding umbrellas. But when the band took the stage, none of the weather concerns mattered anymore. The band opened with a relatively old song, ‘The Stars Are Projectors’ from the 2000 album ‘The Moon & Antarctica’. And it was over an hour of nonstop music from there.

pixies tour toronto

The Modest Mouse frontman and lead singer Isaac Brock is a man of few words. The band was appreciative of the audience’s cheers, but stuck to playing music.

pixies tour toronto

And play music they did. The Grammy-nominated band has seven albums of music to choose from and they played at least one song of each album (except for the 2015 album ‘Strangers To Ourselves’). Additionally the band performed a beautiful cover of The Cure’s ‘A Forest’. The song turned into a jam session with Isaac and guitarist Simon O’Connor trading solos.

pixies tour toronto

The song with the biggest reception was fan favourite ‘Float On’. Everyone in the bowl got to their feet and were bopping up and down in time with the music and singing along.

pixies tour toronto

Modest Mouse played two more songs ‘Teeth Like God’s Sunshine’ and ‘Shit Luck’, then with a quick nod of appreciation they were off the stage.

pixies tour toronto

After a quick half hour break, while the roadies quickly changed the stage setup, and the crowd had an opportunity to get some merch or beverages, everyone was set for the headliners.

pixies tour toronto

The Pixies took the stage in the dark and started playing backlit and with their backs to the crowd. Then they started the show with their surf rock single ‘Cecilia Ann’. The bowl was filled with the reverb from Joey’s Les Paul.

pixies tour toronto

And just like Modest Mouse, Pixies frontman Black Francis is a man of few words. In fact he too was all about the music for all of their show. And his voice has lost any of its range or power. And his power was especially noticeable on the fan favourite ‘Gouge Away’.

pixies tour toronto

Since the early 90’s, the Pixies have been the inspiration for many rock bands. Notably Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, Jerry Cantrell, and Gavin Rossdale (among many others) have cited that the Pixies musical style has been a big influence in their compositions. The Pixies are creative pioneers in their dynamic changes to tempo and volume mid songs. And Saturday night in Toronto was no different.

pixies tour toronto

For the Pixies, often the notes they don’t play are almost as important as the notes they do play. Between David’s syncopated beats and the rest of the band’s musical pauses, the audience is kept on their toes and engaged with all of the music.

pixies tour toronto

Emma Robinson on bass is a relatively new member of the band, joining the Pixies in March. But she is not new to the stage, having played in Band Of Skulls for 20 years. Emma was using a pick all night and the sounds were sharp with quick tempo, keeping pace with David on drums.

pixies tour toronto

Emma also provided beautiful harmonies to Black Francis, and took lead vocals when the band performed ‘The Happening’. Additionally, in that song Emma’s bass was at the forefront.

pixies tour toronto

Joey Santiago is a guitar prodigy. He can shred with all the best, but all night he was adding so much more with his effects. Joey varies his styles from surf rock to psychedelia. At one point he was using the brim of his cap as a guitar slide, and didn’t miss a note.

pixies tour toronto

Fortunately the Pixies didn’t go offstage, making everyone wait in the rain begging for an encore. Instead they just played right through (another innovation that other bands should follow, especially in the rain). Instead they carried on playing, ending the night with two epic songs. Their second-last song of the night was their smash hit ‘Where Is My Mind?’. Emma’s opening wails were perfect and Black Francis’s voice was the same as 35 years ago. Again Joey’s guitar work was brilliant. All 16,000 fans were screaming.

pixies tour toronto

The band closed out the night with a cover from another alt-rock pioneer, ‘Winterlong’ by Canada’s Neil Young. A fitting nod to playing in the great white north.

pixies tour toronto

The walk out of Budweiser Stage was wet and cool, but nobody seemed to mind. It was all smiles after an incredible night of music.

Brilliant. I saw them last in 1989 and was so happy when my wife bought me a ticket to this gig for my 47th! The band played for around 2 hours and covered tunes from just about every album although i have to say i have barely listened to that orange one so wouldn't know if they played something from that mistake.

They transported me back to my youth for two hours even if as an auld cnut i just stood there either nodding my head back and forth or tapping my foot or, during more energetic moments, a combination of both. I really enjoying the performance far more than it showed, honest.

I was surprised to see so many what i thought were youngsters in the Tonhalle listening to a band who formed when many of them weren't even twinkles in the eyes of their hopeful padres, but their energy made up for my lack of. Thanks to them. I was even more surprised to see Mosh pit contributions by guys older than me. Respect. You energetic cnuts. Love it.

They played enough off the Surfa Rosa and Come on Pilgrim LPs that i went home a seriously happy man who hasn't stopped talking about and reliving the gig since.

So fucking good. I hope I'm alive when they play again here.

The technicians prepare the stage. The pedal set of Joey is really impressive, he needs himself a sheet of paper to remember all the set-ups.

The Pixies come on stage silently, without saying a word. From the first moment they give me the impression of being tired and without much energy to give to the audience.

Black Francis has grown in weight and wears a black dress.

Paz Lenchantin stands on the right side, she has a rose sticked to her bass and she is quite a humble figure. The same can be said of Joey Santiago, who is wearing a coppola cap and hardly interacts with the audience. Probably the most lively character on stage is David Lovering who does a great job in the rythmic part.

In the song Rock Music. It is almost impossible to hear Black Francis’ voice. Maybe there’s something wrong with the microphone and the sound levels. Maybe he just does not have any longer the voice for this type of song.

During this tour the band plays 11 of the songs from the new album Beneath the Eyrie, which are quite tame in my opinion.

Another choice I don’t understand is that they deliver most of their hits in the first part of their set, leading to a boring and empty second part.

They should have spread the hits more evenly throughout the set, to keep the audience awake.

All the classic are amazing and I can't resist from singing together with them.

Vamos is the longest song of the set and Joey finally pulls out some trick and plays a bit with the jack of his guitar waving it around and creating some noise.

At the end we are not even sure we will get an encore. Francis looks exhausted. The group plays a little scene on stage where Paz convinces the other to play one last song. Bone Machine.

Pixies Announce First Run of 2023 North American Tour Dates

The post Pixies Announce First Run of 2023 North American Tour Dates appeared first on Consequence .

Pixies  have announced the initial handful of dates for their upcoming 2023 North American headline tour.

Currently wrapping up their 2022 jaunt in New Zealand, the alt-rock stalwarts will hit the road starting on May 4th at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, California. They’ll primarily cover the southwest US throughout the month, making stops in cities such as Phoenix, Santa Fe, Denver, and two back-to-back nights in Las Vegas. They’ll wrap up the leg with a festival set at the Kilby Block Party in Salt Lake City.

Though the tour is in support of Pixies’ September album Doggerel ,  the band have a whole treasure trove of hits and deep cuts to add to their setlists — “setlists” being plural, because each night will see the band play a unique lineup of songs, deciding whatever “the next song” will be right before playing its first note.

Tickets for Pixies’ new tour dates go on sale this Friday, December 16th at 10:00 a.m. local time, and you can head over to Ticketmaster to grab yours. See their full list of upcoming shows below, with more to be announced soon.

Consequence ‘s correspondent in Japan caught Pixies’ show in Osaka just a couple of weeks ago; revisit our recap of the night here .  Doggerel  marked Pixies’ eighth studio album, following up 2019’s Beneath the Eyrie
