History of Kennebunkport Maine

Kennebunkport is one of the oldest European-settled towns in the United States. It was first settled in 1653 as part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, though its current name and town center were established in 1821.

The town went through many names (including Arundel) over the centuries before finally being named Kennebunkport in 1821, drawing its new name from the nearby Kennebunk River. The river and the ocean played important roles in the town’s development as a center for fishing and shipping.

The 1870s saw the rise of the town as a summer destination, a reputation it still enjoys to this day. The mild weather, abundant food, and proximity to the ocean make Southern Maine a wonderful place to visit in the summer.

History buffs will love viewing the historic sea captain mansions that line Summer Street and local museums, including the First Family Exhibit on the Bush family with a tribute to the Presidential Bush compound, amid the splendid summer cottages that grace Ocean Avenue.

16 Top-Rated Things to Do in Kennebunkport, ME

Written by Barbara Radcliffe Rogers Updated Mar 23, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Author Barbara Radcliffe Rogers and her husband, photographer Stillman Rogers, grew up just over the border in New Hampshire and love visiting the beautiful towns along the Maine coast.

Beach towns dot Maine's southern coast , each with a different appeal. But Kennebunkport and its twin, Kennebunk , have a lot more than beaches to attract tourists. A rich heritage of shipbuilding left "The Kennebunks," as they are known, with entire streets of elegant captains' and shipbuilders' homes, making the town centers a pleasure to stroll through.

Kennebunkport, Maine

Three different beach areas, a quaint fishing village, sailing and whale-watching cruises, a walking path along the scenic coast, more than a dozen art galleries, smart shops, the legacy of a presidential family, and many other things to do year-round make the Kennebunks among the best places to visit in Maine .

The twin towns are separated by the irregular line of the Kennebunk River , but for tourists, the more useful division would be between the two business centers. Technically, when you cross the bridge at Dock Square in Kennebunkport, you're in Kennebunk, even though the shops and restaurants continue.

Whether you're looking for a family beach vacation or a romantic getaway for couples, use this list to find the best things to do in Kennebunkport.

1. Dock Square & the Harbor

2. parson's way and ocean avenue, 3. stop at walker's point and blowing cave, 4. swim at kennebunk beach, 5. st. ann's by-the-sea, 6. sun and swim at goose rocks beach, 7. bike or drive to cape porpoise, 8. take a whale watch or sailing cruise, 9. go shopping and gallery hopping, 10. parsons beach, 11. ride the trolley, 12. seashore trolley museum, 13. wedding cake house and kennebunk's summer street mansions, 14. step into history at the brick store museum, 15. st. anthony's franciscan monastery, 16. first families kennebunkport museum, kennebunkport, me - climate chart.

Kennebunkport Harbor

In what's known as the Lower Village, Dock Square is the heart of Kennebunkport's shopping and dining scene . It sits alongside the busy harbor, not far from where the Kennebunk River flows into the Atlantic.

The bridge connecting Dock Square to the Upper Village is a favorite photo stop , lined with flowers in the summer and with views of the river and boats that crowd the little harbor. Historical boards with old photos tell the story of this former ship-building capital and of the tall-masted ships and schooners that were launched here.

The stately homes you see in the streets around Dock Square were the homes of these prosperous ship builders and sea captains.

Each December, during Christmas Prelude festivities, a tall Christmas tree in the center of the square is decorated with colorful fishing buoys.

Parson's Way

Ocean Avenue begins at Dock Square and follows the shore around Cape Arundel as far as Walker's Point. Leaving the village, it follows the river, passing the large Nonantum Resort and the Kennebunk River Club before reaching Colony Beach .

From Colony Beach onward, there are almost continuous sea views. This is where you can pick up Parson's Way , a walking trail that follows the shore, paralleling Ocean Avenue. The two-mile out-and-back trail is relatively level and open year-round.

Overlooking Parson's Way and Ocean Avenue are a series of "cottages" from the days when Kennebunkport was a summer retreat for wealthy city families.

Along Parson's Way, you'll pass several tiny beaches, St. Ann's by-the-Sea , and ragged cliffs with crashing waves.

Bush Summer Home

At the far end of Ocean Avenue is Walker's Point, a peninsula where generations of the Bush family have spent summer vacations. The substantial gabled "cottage" has hosted not only two US Presidents, but foreign heads of state.

Built in 1903 by the grandfather of George H.W. Bush, it was his summer White House and that of his son George W. Bush. While you can't visit the Bush home, you can get good views of it from roadside pullouts along Ocean Avenue.

At one of these, on a bluff overlooking Walker's Point across Sand Cove, is a US Navy anchor, The "Anchor to the Windward" dedicated to George H.W. Bush. This is also where, when the tide is high, you can see the waterspouts from Blowing Cave and Spouting Rock , where waves shoot up from an opening in the rocks below.

Kennebunk Beach

Among the best beaches in the Northeast , Kennebunk Beach is actually three. Gooch's Beach, Middle Beach, and Mother's Beach adjoin each other in a long arc of soft sand and gentle ocean surf beside the mouth of the Kennebunk River.

Don't expect to have the beach to yourself. Despite the difficulty of finding a parking space, the beach is popular year-round. When it's too cold for swimming and sunning, walking on this long stretch of sand is one of the favorite things to do here.

Gooch's Beach , the closest to town, is the biggest; Middle Beach is rockier, and the mix of rock pools and gently sloping sandy shoreline at Mother's Beach make it a popular place to visit for families. A playground at the end adds to its popularity.

Another appeal of these beaches for many is the freedom from boardwalk and concessions, so you'll want to bring your own drinks and snacks.

Parking and Access: To park here, you'll need a parking sticker, obtainable at kiosks along Beach Avenue, and to get there early in the day or late in the afternoon. A better plan is to take the In-Town Trolley to the beach.

St. Ann's by-the-Sea

One of 17 active Episcopal summer chapels in Maine, St. Ann's by-the-Sea would look right at home in an English village. Set in gardens overlooking the Gulf of Maine, the church was built in 1887 of sea-smoothed stones hauled up from the shore below.

The interior walls are of rough stone, as well, with wide stone arches separating the side aisles. The nave is surmounted by a vaulted ceiling of pine beams and trusses. Twenty-five stained-glass windows, many of them dating from the late 1800s, are set in the side walls, lighting the stone walls with a kaleidoscope of color on sunny days.

Address: 167 Ocean Ave. , Kennebunkport, Maine

Goose Rocks Beach

Backed by a fringe of grass-covered dunes, the three miles of powder-soft sand at Goose Rocks Beach is not exactly a local secret, but is less well-known than the three on Beach Avenue. Protected by an off-shore rock barrier, the beach has gentle surf for swimming.

Goose Rocks Beach is just as popular with birds, and a favorite spot for bird-watching . You'll see several varieties of sandpiper foraging near the tide line, and areas of the beach may be blocked to visitors to protect the piping plover that nest here between April and August.

You'll need a pass to park here from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day; you can get these at the kiosk at Kings Highway and Proctor Avenue or at the Goose Rocks Beach General Store.

Address: Kings Highway, Kennebunkport, Maine

Cape Porpoise

The tiny little fishing hamlet of Cape Porpoise is about two miles from Dock Square on Route 9, or an eight-mile bike ride along Ocean Avenue and Shore Road. Here, you'll find a busy working harbor, with fishing boats unloading their catch and a couple of places to have lunch on decks overlooking boats bobbing in the inlet.

Opposite the pier is a map board identifying the 12 harbor islands, all of which are now protected by the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust. This is the best viewpoint for the landmark Goat Island Lighthouse , which has been guiding boats since 1833. The lighthouse is still manned, and you can visit the island at high tide by private boat.

Whale Watch Boat

To see Kennebunkport's rocky coast, islands, and landmarks from a different point of view, see them from the water on a cruise. The two-masted Schooner Eleanor , a traditional gaff-rigged schooner, was built right here in Kennebunkport, long a center for shipbuilding.

Pineapple Ketch is a classic 1970s Downeaster 38, restored to its original condition, and, like the Schooner Eleanor , sails three times a day on two-hour cruises. Tip: the best photography and smoothest sailing is more likely in the morning; afternoon sailings may see more wave action. Or for the most romantic thing to do in Kennebunkport, take a sunset cruise in the evening.

To see humpback, finback, and minke whales, with a chance of spotting the endangered right whale, book a cruise with First Chance Whale Watch . The best chances of sightings are between July and September, when last Chance offers daily cruises.

Glass Art at Compliments

If you looked no farther than the tight cluster of streets and lanes around Dock Square, you could easily believe that gallery hopping and shopping are the two most popular things to do in Kennebunkport. More than a dozen art galleries are within a five-minute walk of the square and bridge, and there are even more gift shops and boutiques.

Conspicuously missing are the souvenir and T-shirt shops common to most beach towns; Kennebunkport caters to a high-taste crowd, and it shows in the shops. You'll also notice that heavy emphasis is given to Maine and New England artists and craftspeople.

At Northlight Gallery , on Ocean Avenue, you'll find striking boat scenes by gallery-owner Harry Thompson, along with paintings by other New England artists. Next door at Landmark Gallery are impressionist paintings by owner David Perry Fouts, along with marine subjects and landscapes, and The Port features original watercolor paintings.

Across the bridge is Maine Art Hill , a multi-floor gallery representing more than 40 Maine artists; the sculpture garden features kinetic works that are in constant motion.

For a selection that includes spectacular hand-blown glass, whimsical ceramics, one-of-a-kind jewelry, and unique gifts, step into Compliments Gallery on Dock Square.

Parsons Beach

Far from the centers of either town, Parson's Beach is also far from any sign of tourism, apart from the cars parked along the unpaved access road. Access is the reason why you can always find a place to spread your towel on this beautiful dune-backed stretch of sand.

Parking is free, but unless you arrive early in the morning, you'll have to walk about half a mile from Route 9, where there is a small parking area. But the beach and the elbow room are worth the walk.

When the weather is too cold for swimming and sunning, Parsons Beach is a favorite place for long walks far away from human activity.

Learn about local history from Native Americans to Kennebunkport's days as the Summer White House, on a one-hour tour with the Intown Trolley . Trolleys were a common feature from the early 1900s through 1927, when they carried summer guests from the train station to their cottages and hotels.

More than 30 years ago, the tradition was revived, with an open-air excursion that points out the main attractions, including the beaches, the Bush summer home at Walker's Point, Blowing Cave, St. Anthony's Monastery, and the streets of beautifully preserved sea captains' houses.

Tours run from Memorial Day through Columbus Day and during Christmas Prelude in December.

Address: 21 Ocean Avenue, Kennebunkport, Maine

Seashore Trolley Museum

The Intown Trolley isn't the only trolley you can ride in Kennebunkport. The Seashore Trolley Museum has been collecting trams, trolleys, and subway cars since it opened in 1939, amassing a collection that represents public transit from around the world.

You can not only look at the 250 examples and learn about them, but you can climb into some of the cars and ride aboard a trolley from the early 1900s to tour the vast property. You can find street cars from Budapest; Rome; pre-World War II Hamburg; and Nagasaki, Japan; as well as various cities in the United States and Canada.

Kids love the museum, where they can climb aboard to explore the cars, and nobody says "don't touch." It's one of the most popular things to do for families . Picnic tables invite you to bring your lunch and stay a while.

Address: 195 Log Cabin Road., Kennebunkport, Maine

Wedding Cake House

As you drive along Summer Street (Route 35) from Kennebunkport to the center of Kennebunk, you'll begin to notice fine old mansions of the shipbuilders whose shipyards lay along the river just beyond. But you'll notice one in particular.

Called the Wedding Cake House because of its over-the-top decorations, it was built in 1825 by a shipbuilder. When the attached barn and carriage house burned in 1852, Bourn rebuilt it and began decorating it with wooden replicas of Gothic ornamentation he had admired while traveling in Milan, Italy.

Having decorated the carriage house with intricately carved pinnacles, he added buttresses to the house. All the work was completed using only hand tools.

Closer to the center, more grand mansions line both sides of the street, and you can learn more about them from the Museum in the Streets signboards . These are among the 25 historical signs and you can see the map of their locations outside the Town Hall. A walk along Summer Street gives you a chance to admire these more closely and see the gardens, as well.

Brick Store Museum

In the center of Kennebunk's Historic District, a former dry goods store built in 1825 is now home to the Brick Store Museum. Its collections of almost 70,000 artifacts and documents are curated into interesting exhibits that tell and illustrate the story of the Kennebunks and surrounding area.

The museum has grown from the original store to include three adjacent buildings dating from 1810 to 1860, which are joined to form a fascinating museum that includes furniture, fine and decorative arts, Native Americans artifacts, implements of daily life, and an especially good collection of early costumes and textiles.

Descriptive information is designed not just to identify the piece but to tell the story associated with it.

Address: 117 Main Street, Kennebunk, Maine

St. Anthony's Franciscan Monastery

Set in beautiful grounds designed by the Frederick Law Olmstead landscaping firm, St. Anthony's Franciscan Monastery is housed in a 1906 Tudor-style mansion and is an active religious community. The monastery was founded in 1947 by Franciscan brothers from Lithuania, who added several features to the grounds in the 1950s.

These additions include the Grotto of our Lady of Lourdes, St. Anthony's Chapel, and the Chapel of Stations of the Cross. The chapel, constructed in the Lithuanian style, has stained-glass windows from Lithuania.

The grounds are open to the public, and you can visit the shrines and English-style gardens and follow the paved walking path through the riverside woodlands. Benches provide places for quiet contemplation, and you can learn more about the shrines on the property from a walking tour brochure available in the adjacent Franciscan Guest House.

Address: 28 Beach Ave., Kennebunk, Maine

First Families Kennebunkport Museum

Although the film and small room of exhibits about the Bush Family and their long relationship to Kennebunkport are interesting, the real attraction here is the house itself.

A guided tour takes you through two floors of the 1853 Greek Revival home and reveals stories about the Nott family that lived here for 150 years.

Like so many others in Kennebunkport, the family's fortune was made in shipbuilding, so you'll learn a bit about this important chapter in the town's history. Now known as White Columns , the house is furnished with antiques, and features original imported French wallpapers and elaborate lighting fixtures. Throughout the holiday season, the entire house is decorated in lavish Victorian style.

Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in Kennebunkport, Maine

Cape Porpoise Maine is a small coastal village in the town of Kennebunkport Maine United States

Since the 19th century, the twin Maine towns of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport have seemed to hover above other seaside destinations, suspended in a sort of celestial, enduringly preppy haze. Over 150 years as a moneyed shipbuilding community and sailing resort will do that—not to mention result in a deluge of historic sea captains homes-turned-private mansions. It’s a veneer that hasn’t cracked—not even under the weight of thousands of height-of-summer tourists who’ve flooded in for the beaches and lobster rolls at The Clam Shack . And a cluster of unquestionably lovely businesses have been bolstering the towns’ dreamy ideal since the ‘70s—couth spots like  The White Barn Inn , and  Ocean  at  The Cape Arundel Inn , both perfect for Muffy and Chip to get G&Ts between croquet and a dependably exquisite prix fixe.

But over the last several years, barging into all that refinement has been an influx of newcomers that are by turns a little funkier, a tad more casual, more worldly, and in some cases downright cool. Chefs from across the country are moving here and making their mark with menus that dovetail tradition with innovation, while heavyweight restaurants from large cities are choosing Kennebunk/port as the first place to open new sibling iterations. Add to that the swell of new inns and boutiques that are increasingly staying open through winter and accommodating the towns’ off-season festivals, and not only is the area offering more to do than sail, it’s shaping up to become an urbane year-round destination.

Best new restaurants in Kennebunkport

When the folks behind  Rosella , the East Village’s wildly popular boîte and the only sustainable sushi restaurant in New York City, started looking around for an ideal place for a second location, they landed on not Washington D.C., Boston, or even Portland, but Kennebunk. And they brought with them their eccentric and creative approach to just about everything. The new outpost,  Rosella KPT , is tricked out with hand-sewn art inspired by indigo patchworks; Chef Matt Kramer avoids overfished species and keeps the seafood as local as possible—which in Kennebunk means the entire state is literally his oyster. Said bivalves show up in dishes like Mere Points from Brunswick with fish sauce granita and blood orange, alongside sashimis of dry-aged steelhead trout and silken bluefin tuna.

The same thing happened when  Via Sophia , Washington D.C.’s modern osteria, opened an additional location. Again—in Kennebunk. This version’s called  Via Sophia by the Sea , and is more seafood-centric than the original. Its chic brown leather banquettes fill up nightly with well-heeled twenty- and thirty-somethings in for the cioppino teeming with plump mussels and lobster, but also to down Negronis beneath the abstract art and mod bubble lighting. (PSA: The sour orange cheesecake deserves its own cult, and could double as an aprés-dinner pillow.) Downstairs there’s even a little nightlife rearing its head in town.  The Rabbit Hole , a ‘20s-inspired speakeasy lounge, pulls in a multigenerational crowd for Alice in Wonderland-themed cocktails and live music.

“Kennebunk has been pretty buttoned up with no nightlife until now, and there’s still a lot of old money people here,” says bar manager Ashley Wilson. “But things are getting more relaxed. We see everyone from 21-year-olds to grandmothers that I’m surprised are still awake.”

Zuni Cafe alums Nate Norris and Annie Callan have also migrated to the area—where they’ve been visiting from San Francisco most of their lives—and are outfitting a funky space downtown with tin ceilings and gleaming tiles to open  Bev’s Café & Market . And even the stalwart classics are morphing.  White Barn Inn , hands-down the  ne plus ultra of fine dining in the area, has opened Little Barn in the abutting room—a cozy and refined-but-rustic space rolling out cosseting dishes of buttery skate wing schnitzel. And  Ocean has relaxed its environment, too. In its kitchen you’ll now find San Francisco transplant Peter Rudolph, who made his biggest mark with a Michelin star at Rosewood’s Madera Restaurant in Menlo Park—where he proved that refined food doesn’t need to mean a stuffy dining experience. He’s deploying that wisdom here with bright, fresh, and light flavors that spotlight local seafood, eaten with a direct view of the surf from whence it came. “I came to Maine for the food and the relationship with the ocean,” he says, “and the culture surrounding that relationship.”

New spots to shop

A stable of imaginative shops in Kennebunkport’s Dock Square have opened recently:  Daytrip Society ’s aisles are packed with diaper bags in trippy swirl fabrics, gift wrap festooned with botanical illustrations, and picnicking supplies. Across the street,  Minka presents its meticulously chosen stock of handmade vases, sustainable handbags, and downy throw blankets according to color and texture, adding sensorial layers to the shopping process. And down Ocean Avenue,  Dannah  —the well-established and gorgeous jumble of women’s jewelry, clothing, and body creams—has just opened  Dannah For Men , a sleek setup peddling everything from retro radios and barware to loud, fun socks and button-down shirts and accessories dapper enough to have you thinking that, yes, there is indeed life beyond that eternal fixture of prepdom, the whale-print belt.

Where to stay in Kennebunkport

Blending the hip with the historic in luxurious boutique hotels is a Lark Hospitality trademark, and the company’s  four new properties in old Kennebunkport sea captains homes—William Jefferds House, James Fairfield House, Acton Patterson House, and Nathaniel Lord Mansion—are paragons of that practice. Expect as many ornately carved poster beds as zebra-striped pillows, and antique portraits overlooking shag rugs and mid-century modern tables. Equally casual and creative is  Goose Rocks Beach House , which opened last season with full multi-bedroom suites overlooking one of Kennebunkport’s prettiest beaches, all decked out with Frette linens, full kitchens, and complimentary beach cruiser bicycles.

For old school beach cottage appeal there’s  The Wanderer , a new assemblage of 17 design-forward units that run from teensy to roomy on up to a two-bedroom house—which made Traveler 's Hot List for 2023 . And anyone familiar with the cheeky retro charm of  The Yachtsman Hotel & Marina Club , Kennebunkport’s ’70’s-meets-modern luxury motel plunked on the banks of The Kennebunk River, will delight to know that it’s now winterized, updated with fireplaces, and open year-round. The better to welcome visitors to the town’s year-round festivals including Prelude, Kennebunkport’s multi-week, renowned holiday celebration.

Visit Colony Beach

If your idea of a good time at the beach involves seashell hunting and sunset strolling, then Colony Beach might just be the Kennebunkport beach for you! Also known as Arundel Beach,  people do also swim here, but it’s an especially good spot for finding neat seashells and taking in the views of boats as they come through the marina.

Colony Beach typically sees less crowds than Goose Rocks Beach, but it also has very limited parking and no restrooms, so that’s partially why. If you’re looking for beautiful places to go and things to do in Kennebunkport ME that aren’t overly crowded with tourist crowds during the summer season, Colony Beach might be a good option for you.

If alcohol is your thing, Maine has no shortage of craft options, and Kennebunkport is no exception. Renowned for its waterfront location, Federal Jacks Restaurant and Brewpub is host to Kennebunkport Brewing Co. Not in the mood for beer? Next door to Federal Jacks is Maine Mead Works, serving up a colorful and creative variety of fruity honey wines. Purchase a tasting to sample a variety of flavors and learn more about what goes into the process of mead making, or purchase by the can. My personal favorite is the iced tea mead and while there is definitely a healthy amount a sweetness, this isn’t the syrupy wine that sometimes comes to mind with mead.

Pamper yourself at a Day Spa

Are you feeling a little jet lagged from your trip? A little achy from all that walking around, swimming, and exploring Kennebunkport? Cottage Breeze Day Spa & Boutique is within walking distance of Dock Square and offers a wide range of massages, body treatments, facials, and other beauty services to help you feel restored and refreshed on your Kennebunkport trip!

This is one of the most popular beaches in Kennebunkport, so heads up that you will likely be battling the crowds in the summer months!

Take a Whale Watching Tour

One of the coolest perks of coastal New England is that you get to see so much marine wildlife! First Chance Whale Watch in Kennebunk is one of the top rated whale watch tours in Maine, and for good reason; Captain Gary has been taking folks out on the water to look for whales since 1998, so he certainly qualifies as an expert on where to find whales near Kennebunkport!

The whale watching tours typically last about 4 1/2 hours, but with a fully stocked galley and restrooms onboard, you’ll probably find the time flies by as you spot all kinds of neat Maine marine wildlife like dolphins and of course, whales!

Go on a Guided Coastal Bike Tour

If you’re looking for fun activities in Kennebunkport, consider going on a guided coastal bike tour through Coastal Maine Kayak + Bike; this 9-mile ride takes you along the coast to several Kennebunkport points of interest, like a historic Inn, the Goat Island Lighthouse, and more. They provide the bikes, helmets, and the guide, all you have to do is show up ready to ride!

Get out on the Water

For the more experienced boater, they even offer powerboat rentals. A number of other rental services around Dock Square offer stand up paddleboards for rent, as well.

What better way to explore a coastal town like Kennebunkport than to see it from the sea, right?

The ULTIMATE Guide To Kennebunkport Maine: Things to Do, See, & Experience This Year

Travelers who want the best of everything Maine offers often look to the seaside village of Kennebunkport to scratch that luxurious itch. Every turn on Kennebunkport’s Dock Square, rocky shorelines, and boat tours looks like an Instagram photo.

No filters are needed to get the raw beauty of this historic shipbuilding and fishing village, but there are some important things savvy travelers need to know to enjoy the best things to do in Kennebunkport Maine .

Kennebunkport Maine harbor at night

About Kennebunkport Maine

First things first—it’s “Ken-KNEE-bunk-port,” not “Ken-uh-bunk-port.” That small point of clarity will get you a whole new level of “living live a local” attention.

Also, it’s important to note that some attractions are listed by the initials KPT.

Kennebunkport was founded in 1653, and instead of the modern-day village feeling like a remodel, you truly feel transported back in time.

The village is broken up into three main areas:

  • Dock Square: the dense downtown area on the east side of the Kennebunk River.
  • Goose Rocks Beach : the only beach in Kennebunkport.
  • Cape Porpoise: the “quieter side of Kennebunkport” with a fishing village and state park on an island.

Within and around those locations, you’ll find adventurous ecosystems like tide pools, wooded hiking trails, shellfishing spots, campgrounds, and lighthouses.

The biggest mistake first-time visitors make is sticking close to Dock Square and not exploring the shorelines and islands nearby. Boat tours and fishing charters build your sea legs while mingling between lobsters by the pound and whales by the ton.

Kennebunkport and the Kennebunk River are not to be confused with the Kennebec Valley & River region . Remember this by “Bunk by the Beach” and “Bec is a Trek,” since the Kennebec Valley is inland, remote, and rugged.

Kennebunkport Weather

Each season in Kennebunkport brings a new weather pattern, precipitation types, and temperature range. Since Kennebunkport is in the Southern Maine Coast region, you’ll get warmer temperatures throughout the year, with less snow and more rain compared to the more interior and northern sections of the state.

Summers bring idyllic warm weather, evident by the thousands of guests that fill up the village and beaches. Sunny beach days and starlit nights are comfortable, with the average high being 74°(F) and lows around 55°(F) during the summer months. As a result, the best time of year to visit Kennebunkport for warm-weather activities is from late June to mid-September.

But even during the “off-season” there is reason to get outside and enjoy the weather in Kennebunkport:

  • Fall is crisp with fantastic foliage displays—plan for highs in the 50s and lows in the upper 30s.
  • Winter in Kennebunkport brings daily average temperatures below 42°F, with lows dipping into the teens. You may see flurries of snow, but the average snowfall of 14.4 inches/month is significantly less than other areas of the state.
  • Spring temperatures don’t get out of the 60s for highs and can be at or below freezing at night.

Each season peels back a new layer of adventure, and even the changing tide discreetly reveals new passageways to explore.

Kennebunkport Outdoor Things to Do

Explore on foot.

Kennebunkport’s Dock Square is an open-air village where you walk in and out of various shops and restaurants, but you can also experience more of the true Maine outdoors in Kennebunkport.

TRAVEL TIP: When visiting Dock Square, be sure to look down alleyways and up/down stairwells, as this dense district wastes no space.

Explore on the Water

Whether you’re an agile angler or just along for the ride, an outdoor adventure on the water is truly part of the Kennebunkport experience.

You can ride the Kennebunk River to the open water of the Atlantic Ocean on the Schooner Eleanor . Roll up your sleeves and get hands-on with the Rugosa Lobster Tour team to learn the art of lobstering.

First Chance Whale Watch offers tiered tour options, from public rides to private tours, and you even get a “do-over” if the whales are wandering someone else during the tour.

You can also choose a kayak or SUP rental to paddle solo or opt for a guided tour through Southern Maine Kayaks or Coastal Kayak Maine .

TRAVEL TIP: Know the tide schedule to launch at high tide or else you could be portaging your kayak back through mud flats. Check coastal conditions before you head to the shoreline.

Explore the Islands

That kayak or SUP can take you through the Cape Porpoise Islands , with Cape, Vaughn, and Trott islands offering primitive camping and launch sites .

Goat Island Lighthouse is the only one off the coast of Kennebunkport, and a small boat dock welcomes visitors to the land. Official lighthouse tours are available through New England Eco Adventures in Kennebunk.

Since tours are hit-or-miss for the public, follow the Goat Island Lighthouse Facebook page for updates if you aren’t taking the tour.

Goose Rocks Beach-Kennebunkport

Explore By Land

Once you get your sea legs steady, check out the Maine Day Adventure tour options , from a foodie tour to walking historic streets and even a dog-focused food tour. Summer can’t officially start until the Intown Trolley bell rings , taking guests to the hot spots of the Kennebunks.

The Kennebunkport Conservation Trust manages more than 27 miles of trails through salt marshes, wooded areas, and shorelines throughout 2,300 acres of the town’s footprint. The lands include a mix of nature, wildlife, and historic buildings.

Goose Rocks Beach takes a break from the rocky coastline to spread out across three miles of sandy shores. This is arguably the most scenic beach in Kennebunkport Maine and the soft, flat sandy beach is ideal for walking or relaxing and enjoying the beautiful views of nearby Timber Island and the coast.

SAFETY TIP: Don’t be dissuaded by reviews complaining about greenhead and biting flies. They are common in all New England coastal communities and peak in the late summer. While immune to bug spray, some experts swear by Avon’s Skin-So-Soft . Bring a wide-brimmed hat, long pants and long-sleeved shirt – just in case.

Explore the Holidays

Kennebunkport becomes one of the best Maine Christmas Towns for nearly two weeks each December. The Christmas Prelude brings Santa by lobster boat, and lobster traps replace the traditional Christmas tree. Fireworks, reindeer, parades, and so many more activities make it worth bundling up to enjoy this festive event.

St. Ann's Episcopal Church-Kennebunkport

Kennebunkport Indoor Things to Do

Much of what Kennebunkport offers is geared toward the outdoors, even in the winter. Sleigh rides, ice rinks, and cross-country skiing trails come alive. But what if you’re an “indoors” person?

  • Make Dinner an Event : Splurge on a multi-course dinner or bar hop between the affluent hotels to enjoy all the historic stops without having to pay sky-high hotel prices.
  • Have a Cold One : Just across the river at Federal Jacks, the Kennebunkport Brewing Company offers enough samples to spend a dry and warm day inside while still getting exquisite seaport views.
  • Spa Day : Make a spa day at one of the unique properties in Kennebunkport, such as the Tree Spa at Cape Arundel Inn .
  • Fall in Love : Kennebunkport comes back to life during February for Paint the Town Red event with discounts and specials for couples.

St. Anne’s Episcopal Church By-The-Sea

Visitors are welcome at St. Ann’s Episcopal Church , with a glorious seaside view and a stone chapel. Regularly scheduled seasonal worship services are held Sundays at 8:00 am and 10:00 am with visitors being welcome to tour the property when the gates are open (mid-June through September).

Seashore Trolley Museum

Don’t let the name fool you, the Seashore Trolley Museum offers up so much more than traditional trolley rides and historical trains. The museum celebrates the history and innovation required to keep the public moving on mass transit. See if your hometown has a piece of history here.

White Columns Tour

The Kennebunkport Historical Society offers docent-led tours through the White Columns Greek revival mansion . Built in 1853, this Victorian-era home has been owned and loved by the same family for 130 years and has kept its old-world charm and original furnishings.

Take a guided tour to travel back in time through the stately home’s seven rooms, hearing stories about three generations of the Perkins-Nott family who lived, loved, and died in this magnificent Greek revival mansion.

The tour covers the history of Kennebunkport, its shipbuilding and maritime traditions, as well as the intriguing story of the family who lived in the house.

Fun Fact: The Presidential Bush family, long-time Kennebunkport supporters, donated mementos for a whole Bush Family Gallery in the home.

Arundel Antique Village-Kennebunkport-

Additional Things to Do Near Kennebunkport

Tourists pay much more attention to the village lines between Kennebunk and Kennebunkport (which is on the bridge at Dock Square), but when you’re there, they feel like one big village.

Kennebunkport is more touristy while neighboring Kennebunk is more residential. Together with Arundel, the three are collectively known as “The Kennebunks. “

Kennebunk Maine Attractions

Kennebunk has more beaches, the Lower Village, and Historic District, offering more places to choose from, especially during big summer crowds. Kennebunk doesn’t just have a museum. It IS a museum, and you can stroll through the Museum in the Streets with this self-guided walking tour through the history of Kennebunk.

Arundel is known for its antiquing, and Arundel Antique Village has more than 200 dealers displaying unique items. The Maine Classic Car Museum brings back memories of automotive eras and a glimpse at the future of the industry.

Look for the elements of earth, wind, water, and fire to expand the experience.

Alisson’s Restaurant

Make an afternoon or night of it at Alisson’s Restaurant , a Kennebunkport staple. With a mix of Maine seafood and lots of lobster dishes, there’s plenty of bar food to fuel your visit through the big game or a night of trivia. Drink menus include beer, wines, cocktails, whiskey, and tequila.

Mabel’s Lobster Claw

The Langsford KPT on Cape Porpoise

Whether you rent a unit or cottage, you’ll have the full scale of amenities as if you were at home – kitchen, laundry, and one or two bedrooms. Control your trip with contactless entry and common spaces like a BBQ grill, fire pit, and pool with beach chairs and towels to take to the beach.

Kennebunkport Maine FAQs

Is kennebunkport really a four-season destination.

Yes! In fact, the business association has actually trademarked the phrase The Place to Be All Year™ to drive that message home.

While there will be some seasonal closures, with January and February being the quietest months, there’s always something to do in the Kennebunks.

Can I tour the Bush family home at Walker’s Point?

No. The picturesque home on Walker’s Point is still a vacation home for the extended Bush family. You will have plenty of vantage spots around the shoreline to snap photos.

How do I get a marriage license in Kennebunkport?

The town website has great information for soon-to-be-wed couples , including residential and out-of-state details. You need to call the office to get the right forms and schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are not allowed.

What other licenses will I need?

If you want to fish in the ocean, lakes, or rivers, you’ll need a fishing license from the state . A limited number of shellfish licenses are available through the town hall. For a full list of activities and laws or license requirements, check out Maine’s Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Department’s website .

What about parking in Kennebunkport?

Parking is very limited, and rules vary by location, time of year, and type of vehicle. The most stringent parking rules are in place from May 1 through October 31, and an overnight Winter Parking Ban is in effect from December 1 through April 15.

You also need to review Beach Parking Sticker rules for Goose Rocks Beach. If you want to park at Kennebunk beaches, you’ll need a separate sticker .

NOTE: A parking permit or beach sticker does not guarantee a parking spot, but it does make it legal for you to park there if a spot is open.

Is Kennebunkport Maine Worth Visiting?

Absolutely. Kennebunkport brings classic seaport charm in a safe, family-friendly environment with lobster, lighthouses, and long walks on the beach all part of an average day.

Why Go To Kennebunkport

A politico can tell you that the Bush family has been vacationing on Kennebunkport for years. And a paparazzo might encourage you to camp out along Ocean Drive to snap a blurry photo of the presidential family at their  Walker's Point  compound. But harboring politicians isn't even what this southern coastal area of Maine does best, nor is it what the town should be known for. Kennebunkport is simple, sea-centric bliss: a natural beach destination with miles of rugged shoreline dotted with summer homes and sailboats. In town, local fisher- and lobstermen deliver the morning's catch to the open-air cafes while artists open up shop on the wharves of  Dock Square . Even the beaches are unassuming and quiet, with secret footpaths leading you from the road. Here, you might have literally found the place where you can get away from it all.

Kennebunkport Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Kennebunkport is between June and October, when the weather is at its warmest. The only downside: nightly rates will be at their peak during this lengthy season. March through May is a less pricey and less crowded time to visit, but businesses are slow to open after the big chill from November to February. Temperatures can dip to the low teens, so you should pack thick layers.

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

Use two wheels, not four Parking spots are impossible to find in  Dock Square , and beach parking comes with a hefty permit price. Save yourself some dough – and a lot of hassle – and rent a bike.

Try the lobster Nothing beats fresh Maine lobster. Lobster rolls are a popular lunchtime snack, but a boiled lobster dinner is the classic way to go. If you're a beginner, ask for a soft-shell lobster – it's easier to crack.

What the heck are the Kennebunks? You'll often hear Kennebunkport referred to as part of the Kennebunks, a shorthand nickname for both Kennebunkport and its neighbor, Kennebunk.

How to Save Money in Kennebunkport

Fly to Boston  More airlines service Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and more daily flights are available compared to Portland International Jetport (PWM), so you have a greater chance of scoring a deal.

Avoid weekend trips  If you plan a trip during the middle of the week, you'll find fewer crowds and reduced nightly rates at many  hotels  and bed-and-breakfasts.

Visit in the offseason Spring and fall might be chilly, but the offseason still a gorgeous (and affordable) time to visit.

What to Eat

Thanks to Kennebunkport's location along New England's Atlantic coast, the town's dining scene includes lots of seafood. You'll find oysters, clams, mussels, lobster, fish and more on menus around town. Many of the city's eateries are perched along the water, allowing for great waterfront views from patios and a pleasant atmosphere to enjoy a meal.

Hoping to sample a traditional Maine lobster roll? Visitors and locals favor  Nunan's Lobster Hut  and  The Clam Shack , saying both spots offer some of the best lobster rolls in New England that are piled high with sweet meat. If you're in the mood for a meal with a view, head to  Arundel Wharf , which overlooks the Kennebunk River and features a deck for visitors to enjoy small bites and cocktails and a menu of seafood and pasta. The casual  Federal Jack's , the original home of Shipyard Brewing Company, also offers a deck with river views and tasty brewpub fare. Looking for more of a fine dining experience? The AAA Five Diamond-rated  White Barn Inn Restaurant  receives top marks for its upscale ambiance, decadent cuisine and varied tasting menu. Old Vines , in nearby Kennebunk, is a great spot to enjoy live music, an extensive wine-by-the-glass list and creative comfort dishes, like chicken meatballs, portobello Wellington and braised short ribs. Meanwhile, the restaurant at The Boathouse has a gorgeous waterfront location and what it calls a "classic" Maine menu, with a seafood bar featuring fresh oysters, crab and lobster tacos.

Getting Around Kennebunkport

The best way to get around Kennebunkport is by foot or bike. There's also the seasonal Shoreline Trolley for traveling between surrounding towns. The town's small size and lack of parking are strong arguments for these modes of transportation. To get to Kennebunkport, you can fly into Portland International Jetport (PDM), located approximately 30 miles north of Kennebunkport, or into Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), about 90 minutes south of Kennebunkport. At either airport, rental cars can be easily obtained. Once you're in town, it's best to park your car and leave it at your accommodation, unless you're heading out for daytrips.

This small coastal town is perfect for summer getaways.

Bucket List Journey

Kennebunkport Maine Bucket List: 20+ Things To Do in The Coastal Town

In the Southern part of Maine you will find the charming coastal town of Kennebunkport. It is the place most commonly known as being the summer home of former president George H. W. Bush. But, there is so much more to Kennebunkport besides ogling Walker’s Point, the location of the Bush compound. It is also a city where you can take your beloved pooch on a foodie tour, kayak on the river and indulge in fresh lobster at every meal.

Kennebunkport is a remarkable New England town that offers a unique travel opportunity to all tourists for all seasons. Whether traveling solo or with your family, here are the best things that you can do to enjoy Kennebunkport.

kennebunk tourism

The Best Things To Do in Kennebunkport Maine

1. catch a live show at vinegar hill.

Enjoy a high-caliber live performance at Vinegar Hill Music Theatre and indulge in a unique entertainment experience that this beautiful town has to offer. This theater is nothing like your typical performance hall—it used to be a barn that was built in the late 1800s and has served its original purpose for over a century. It was in 1997 when the barn was given a new life and was transformed into a theater. Since then, it has delivered high-quality performances that are enjoyed by the local community as well as the visitors of Kennebunkport. This old building has witnessed the dawn of the 19th century in this quaint town and will remain present to see centuries more.

2. Check Out Dock Square

Dock Square is a beautiful historic neighborhood that is conveniently located right in the heart of Kennebunkport. It is a place you should not miss when visiting this delightfully alluring New England town. Take a leisure walk down Ocean Avenue and marvel at the sailboats and fishing boats moored at the docks along Kennebunk river. The picturesque view will take you back to a time when life was simpler and easier.

While enjoying the Atlantic breeze, you can also indulge in a sumptuous meal at a local restaurant or enjoy window-shopping in this magical coastal town. The downtown streets are known for their quintessential shops that offer an array of merchandise that you can use while in town or bring home as a remembrance for your travel.

3. Check Out The Seashore Trolley Museum

Check out the Seashore Trolley Museum , and maybe even take a ride on one of the trams that go back to the early 1900s. The Seashore Trolley Museum is the first and largest mass transit museum in the world. It boasts a massive collection of vintage trams, automobiles, and buses that have been maintained and restored to its former glory. In 1980, ten of these trams earned their rightful position in the National Register’s list of Historic Places.

The Atlantic Shore Line Electric Railroad used to be the major mode of transport back in the 1800s. Today, it serves as a demonstration railway and a monumental tourist attraction that people can enjoy when visiting the Seashore Trolley Museum.

4. Do a Beer Tasting of the Local Brew

If you love a good craft beer, then don’t miss doing some flights of beer at all the local favorite breweries. Directly beneath Federal Jacks Restaurant, you will find their seven barrel brewery, Kennebunport Brewing Company . Not only can you take a tour of the facilities, but you can also choose the sampler where you will be tasting beers with names like Old Thumper and Fuggles. Who could resist? Batson River Brewing has their flagship location in downtown Kennebunk, Maine and Sebago Brewing Co. is another local favorite.

5. Eat a Blueberry Pie

The whoopie pie is the official state treat of Maine, but the blueberry pie is the official state dessert. During the peak season you will see this fruit featured in many restaurant dishes, like blueberry barbecue ribs or blueberry cornbread. But, there’s nothing like a homemade bubbling blueberry pie hot from the oven. Mabel’s restaurant is not only a place for a killer lobster roll, but they also serve a scrumptious blueberry pie a la mode. Another contender is Alisson’s in Dock Square.

If you don’t want to wait for pie until your visit, then make your own with this Maine Wild Blueberry Pie recipe

6. Eat a Lobster Roll

It doesn’t get much more quintessential Maine than eating fresh lobster, and one of the best is at The Clam Shack . Their lobster roll, simply made with fresh lobster meat, mayonnaise, and melted butter, warrants the dozen people deep line that commonly forms in front of their order window. This $17.95 sandwich is stuffed with a whopping one pound of fresh lobster meat and has been mentioned in everything from Gourmet magazine to the New York Times. No surprises there, because it is amazing.

Though The Clam Shack is truly delicious, many of the locals also swear by Port Lobster or Mabel’s to get their lobster roll fix. You may just have to do a lot of research (lobster roll sampling) to find your favorite. Bummer.

7. Eat a Whoopie Pie

The Whoopie Pie is a delightful dessert that has two pillowy chocolate cakes (cookies) sandwiched around a sweet frosting filling—an Oreo on steroids . Originally, these treats were made from leftover cake batter, but now their popularity warrants their own recipe and nonstick pan. Though the origin of the whoopie pie has been a battle between Pennsylvania and Maine, the latter of the two has claimed it as the official state treat. And what a treat it is.

You can stop into HB Provisions , an inviting general store where the Bush clan have been known to frequent, to test their version that is truly delicious. Or just make your own with this  Old-Fashioned Whoopie Pie Recipe .

Sweet Whoopie Pie served

8. Eat an Exotic Flavored Ice Cream

Each day Rococo Artisan Ice Cream has fourteen delectable flavors in their rotation. You can indulge in a scoop of traditional chocolate, but for this bucket list check you must order a more creative cone. Though the Goat Cheese & Blackberry Chambord Swirl is delightful and the Spicy Rocky Road will give you tongue a divine kick, why not give the Sweet Avocado Cayenne a shot? Or how about the Sunfish Wheat Ale Beer with Candied Ginger & Apricots. Head into their shop and select the most unique flavor they have that day!

What are the craziest ice cream flavors in America? Find the answer here .

9. Go to the Beach

With its convenient position on the Atlantic Seaboard, this town offers a lot of opportunities for enjoyment and relaxation that every beach lover can take delight in.

  • Parsons Beach: Parsons Beach is the perfect option for those who are looking for a more private beach experience. Although parking is limited and permission is required to access this open beach, it is still worth the visit to enjoy a scenic walk in this untainted nature.
  • Kennebunk Beach: Kennebunk Beach is a great choice to swim, kayak, and enjoy a whole day of a picnic while enjoying the Atlantic breeze. If you’re looking for the best beach to spend quality time with your family.

There is no better way to travel than to combine your trip with gastronomy. Join the Maine Foodie Tour to enjoy the exquisite taste and the culinary history of Kennebunkport. This tour is in itself a popular tourist attraction taking the visitors through a half-mile culinary journey starting from the Dock Square to the lower village of Kennebunkport. Savor on those delightful lobsters and chowders while chatting with the local food artisans who help keep Maine’s centuries-old culinary tradition.

Got a dog? Kennebunkport is a dog-friendly town! You can bring your pooch to the beach, buy them designer gear at one of the many shops, sleep with them at a friendly Inn and even take them on a doggie food tour— a perfect addition to your dog bucket list . Maine Foodie Tours will accompany you and your four-legged friend on a “doggy and me” tour featuring treats for the both of you.

11. Spend the Afternoon in Cape Porpoise

Spending an afternoon filled with light adventure and discovery is easy in Cape Porpoise. It is a quiet fishing village where many lobster boats unload their daily catch and the lighthouse is the most known landmark. However, there are also far more things to do too. You can rent bikes to cruise the country roads or rent a kayak to explore the water views.

Kayak for a day out to Cape Porpoise Lighthouse

12. Kayak the Kennebunk River

Get a different perspective of the Kennebunk’s by kayaking along the picturesque tidal river. This working river is a major part of the economy and local culture, which you can experience from the water. At Coastal Maine Kayak you can choose to take one of their Kennebunk river tours or opt for a self-guided kayak adventure.

14. See Walker’s Point

The Walker’s Point Estate located on Ocean Avenue is the summer home of former President George Bush and his family. The central house of the estate was built using the colonial American architectural style common in the New England region since the 1600s. It is a popular landmark that celebrates the rich history of New England. Although tourists are not allowed in the estate, visitors can stop their vehicle and take advantage of the vantage point from Ocean Avenue to enjoy the amazing architecture and the beautiful nature that surrounds it.

15. Sleep in a Historic Bed and Breakfast

Historic Bed and Breakfasts are plentiful in the coastal town of Kennebunkport. But, which one will you choose? One of the best, and the one that I called home for a few lovely nights, is  Captain Lord Mansion . This authentic shipbuilder’s mansion can be found in a quiet residential neighborhood, just a block from the beach and a few minutes from Dock Square.

Other Favorite Inns: The White Barn Inn , Captain Jefferds , 1802 House  and Maine Stay

16. Try to Spot a Celebrity

Kennebunkport sees its fair share of celebrities, besides the Bush family and other dignitaries. It is a secret getaway to many of the famous. You may see them eating lobster rolls at The Clam Shack, sleeping at the luxurious White Barn, having a cup of coffee at HB Provisions or catching a play at the nearby the Ogunquit Playhouse . *Remember that they are probably enjoying a quiet getaway, so try not to disturb them!

Some of the celebrities rumored to sneak off to the Kennebunks are Taylor Swift, Quentin Tarantino and Billy Joel.

17. Take a Lobster Boat Cruise

You have eaten your lobster roll(s), now get a glimpse into the life of a lobster fisherman. The Rugosa Lobster Tour  will take you on a one and a half hour scenic tour of the Kennebunk River in a classic New England wooden lobster boat. On this cruise, you can get your hands dirty (if you choose) while assisting in the hauling of the lobster traps.

If a more relaxing cruise is what you seek, then sail with  Schooner Eleanor Sailing Cruises who will take the schooner along the beautiful Kennebunks coastline . This is an experience that will have you feeling like a millionaire yachter on a boat that is a beautiful example of fine local craftsmanship.

18. St. Ann’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church

St. Ann’s Episcopal Church  is worth the visit even if you don’t plan on staying for service. The church grounds include a beautiful stone chapel, seaside chapel, columbarium and rectory. The picturesque Stone Chapel is the main draw for visitors, and it’s no wonder. The interior and exterior is made with breathtaking sea-washed stones, instead of wood and the stained glass windows date back to the late 1800s/early 1900s.

19. Visit Goat Island Lighthouse

Goat Island lighthouse is situated off Cape Porpoise and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in New England. The tower was built in 1833 to serve as a beacon light for mariners. When President George H.W. Bush took the office starting 1989 to 1993, the lighthouse served as a watchtower for some of his Secret Service agents. The Walker’s Point Estate is conveniently visible when viewed from the top of the tower.

20.Visit Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge

Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge is a 9,125-acre sanctuary along the southern coast of Maine. The center was established in 1966 and was named after Rachel Carson, author, and marine biologist. It is dedicated to preserving the natural habitat of the different wildlife in the area, including migratory birds. The sanctuary also features a trail where visitors can walk and exercise while learning about the different flora and fauna that take refuge in this massive piece of land.

Thank you for this post, I love reading about travels almost as much as I love to travel

I love to write about travel almost as much as I love to travel :)

Same here……I also write about travel but not as good as you….you can check my blog too….

Lobster roll on boat and boozy dessert in Maine are new things to me. Great adventures in America with familiar locations such as Kennebunkport. Can you suggest some in Maryland?

I haven’t traveled to Maryland yet, though would love to go and find some bucket list worthy adventures there!

Hi! Your blogs are amazing reads. I enjoyed reading each one of them; they are very much informative as well. Also, I would like to invite you to read mine. It would be a pleasure to know your opinion on the same. Thanks!

Thanks for the Kudos. I’ll check out your blog too.

Fabulous post! You really captured the essence of Kennebunkport. What a special place! Loved your photos!

Thanks Suzanne! It’s easy to take pretty photos of a such an amazing place :)

Very intersting article. Out of all your experience, I think i vwould like to try the Lobster Roll. How good was it?

It was delicious!!

Annette, You are delight and this is a GREAT list. I love that you have included all the senses and the full scope of experiences in Kennebunkport. I feel honored and proud to see this list. You are welcome to Maine ANYTIME. Our best to you for safe and happy travels.

Thank you Kristin. I would absolutely adore coming back to the Kennebunks :)

Kennebunkport is home to a number of public or publicly-accessible beaches. You can easily enjoy them if the weather is good.

Yes! And some of them are dog friendly :)

I’ve never heard of this place before, it seems so cool. I like that celebrities go there to relax, it seems like a peaceful town for it!

It’s pretty peaceful and filled with plenty of lobster!!

Don’t miss it! Just try to avoid going with an RV because the roads are narrow and winding, and parking can be very difficult. It is a wonderful, beautiful place. (We like the lobster rolls warm instead of cold.) Enjoy!

These are some cute photos. Specially the photo of that lobster roll brought water in my mouth. Looks really tasty. I would probably pay more than $17.95 for that right now.

At the time, I though $17.95 was quite high, but then I tasted the lobster! Yum!

I loved every single detail in this post from the word go. I am a travel freak, but usually I prefer the hard and rough treks. But after this post I have this sudden urge to experience all these luxuries too! The Whoopie Pie and the Blueberry Pie had me drooling while beer and cocktails are a weakness!

This is a great list! I grew up in central Maine and travel back often, but haven’t explored as much in southern Maine. Might have to take my dog there sometime this year! And that photo of the lobster roll is making me excited for summer!

That lobster roll was delicious!!

Eat a bean supper at the local church. Sounds crazy but tourists do it often ;)

Thanks for the suggestion!

Would you spend a night in Portsmouth or do you think more time in Portland would be better? We are staying two nights at the White Barn Inn. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Portland is having internal problems right now. I definitely would choose another place, as you will run into road blockages due to protests and governmental strife. Avoid it if possible.

Don’t forget about the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, ME. It has been there since the 1930’s. It is seasonal, opening in May.

Hello, Great article and recommendations. I’ve been to Kennebunkport many times, having grown up in New England. Clam Shack does have the best lobster rolls! Question: The photo with the walkway on the cliffs, where was that taken? I don’t recall ever seeing that in the area. Reminds me of Acadia. Thank you.

I think it was a teaser just to get us to look. I’m from Maine also & have never seen that there.

I’m in let’s do all of them! Thanks Dino! I hope toget up to Maine for a visit. ❤️Jan

What about the trolley museum?

A lot of places are closed, call them directly before you go.

This is the article definitely I will try to follow when I comment on other blogs.

Where is the picture on your post cover page?

I think you are talking about the photo that going around on pinterest? That pin was not created by me, but by someone else and that photo is actually from Ireland. Because it was created by someone else, I am not able to edit it or else I would change that photo. Sorry about the confusion.

Kennebunkport, Maine

The place to be all year ™, lower village, dock square, ocean avenue & cape porpoise.

Kennebunk’s Lower Village & Kennebunkport’s Dock Square are located along the ocean and Kennebunk River. Settled in the 1600’s and a long time ship building mecca, the river banks saw five-masted ships and schooners making their way down the river on their way to the sea. Sea captains built fine mansions, many of which are preserved today as lovely inns with antique charm. Over 100 years ago, this part of the Maine Coast first became a resort destination – today it’s “ the place to be all year “.
