The ICEMULE Jaunt 15L excels in maintaining low temperatures, which is crucial for keeping your contents cold throughout the day. During testing, it was found that the cooler could maintain temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit for up to 55 hours. This means that even on a long day out, your drinks and snacks will stay refreshingly cold from morning till evening.

To achieve such remarkable temperature endurance, it’s recommended to use a 2:1 ice-to-can ratio and inflate the cooler with air after packing.

Under ideal conditions, the ICEMULE Jaunt 15L’s ice retention can reach up to 2.7 days below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, making it a reliable choice for longer distances and extended outdoor adventures.

Ice Retention Test Results

Ice retention is a critical factor when choosing a cooler, and the ICEMULE Jaunt 15L does not disappoint. This cooler can carry up to 18 pounds of ice, showcasing its substantial capacity for ice retention. For those planning a day trip, it’s advised to pack at least 5 pounds of ice to ensure that the ice lasts for the full 24 hours.

I've done a couple of simple tests myself, not trying to replicate the results presented by the brand, but simply checking whether it can hold my meals and drinks cold enough for as long as I need it.

The first test I did was packing a bag of ice, some beers and a couple of packed steaks to a camping trip. The steaks held their temperature very well from late night until the next mid-day. And the cans remained very cool, until the evening, with the ice half melted in the bag. I did not use too much ice, I have to say, as I did not plan on setting any records.

The second test I did was throwing a small ziplock of ice into the cooler, and leaving it in 72 degrees F temperature. The ice completely melted only after about 22 hours. As you can see in my images below:

• After 15 hours it contained around 45% ice and 55% water
• After 18 hours it the split was 30% ice and 70% water
• And after around 22 hours the small bag of ice has fully melted.

JUST TO NOTE: I was not trying to replicate the test the brand mentioned. I was merely testing to see how long it might chill my items if I use less ice, which I normally tend to do. This is very useful for me when I go on some improvisational fishing trips, or during a hot hike.

This test proved to me that it does its job very well; probably better than some hardshell coolers I've tried in my past camping trips.

According to the item specifications, including cold drinks inside the cooler can help in preserving the ice for an even longer duration. I believe that with these test results, it’s clear that the ICEMULE Jaunt 15L is designed to keep your drinks and food cool, making it an excellent choice for day trips and short adventures. Though traditional hard coolers have their place, they arenʻt exactly easy to carry or very portable. I know I certainly wonʻt be taking one on a hike. 😅

ICEMULE Jaunt Cooler Review

First up in our ICEMULE Cooler review is the Jaunt. The Jaunt is ICEMULEʻs smallest Cooler with two traditional backpack straps (they also have a 10 L ICEMULE Classic Cooler with a single sling-style shoulder strap). 

But just because itʻs small doesnʻt mean itʻs lacking in features. Or function. Nope, this mini Cooler is mighty and packed with all the great features you want in a cooler backpack. 

The ICEMULE Jaunt is small but mighty with all the essential features of a high-performing backpack cooler.

Weʻve found the padded backpack straps on the Jaunt comfortable to wear, even for longer distances. In fact, our kids (10 and 12) can comfortably carry the Jaunt to the beach or even on short hikes. 🙌

Portability

Out of the five ICEMULE Coolers we tested, the Jaunt is tied with the Classic for most portable. When not in use, it folds or rolls into a small package and is easy to carry anywhere. 

As weʻve been testing this soft cooler, I couldnʻt help but think how perfect it would have been on our last trip to Hawaii. Because of how small this Cooler can compress, I have no doubt it will become a permanent item on our packing list for plane travel.

Update: On a recent trip to Kauai, we packed our Jaunt, and it was just as perfect as I thought it would be. We used it regularly at the pool, the beach, and even took it on our 9+ mile hike to Hanakāpī’ai Falls !

Design & Function

We are highly impressed with the function of the ICEMULE Cooler at keeping drinks ice-cold, even in 90°F heat. While the roll-top is designed to keep things cold and water out, it also did an excellent job at keeping sand out of our food and drinks on a windy day at the beach. We also love that the Jaunt includes a front zipper pocket for extra dry storage.

PolarLayer Insulation combined with adding air via the IM AirValve keeps things nice and cool for over 24 hours. In our testing, weʻve experienced minimal ice melt at 36 hours in external temps around 75-85° F.

In addition to padded backpack straps, a sternum strap and ventilated back panels on the back of the bag make carrying comfortable even when fully loaded. We also found that being sure to add air to the insulation layer via the air valve increases the comfort level.

Unlike more bulky coolers, the backpack straps make the ICEMULE Pro easy to carry in any environment. Similar to the Jaunt, the Pro can pack flat, be folded, or roll for easy storage at home or in your car when not in use. 

The design and capacity of the ICEMULE Pro is ideal for larger groups or full-day outings, even in the summer heat. Durable MuleSkin fabric and welded seams mean this backpack cooler should last for years. While this model does not have a zipper pocket for extra dry storage, bungee cords on the front are convenient for holding a jacket or other soft items.

Made with rugged materials, designed to keep things icy cold for multiple days, and ergonomic features, the ICEMULE BOSS is one of the best soft-sided coolers on the market.

We can attest to this firsthand. 

In fact, after a recent outing, my husband and I both thought the other had emptied the ice out of the cooler after putting our food and drinks back in the fridge. Instead, we had left the Cooler (unrolled!) in the garage with temps in the 70-80°F range. After an additional 48 hours, we still had ice with minimal melt! 

I knew this Cooler was a beast, but I wasnʻt expecting that level of performance. Obviously, thatʻs not the intended use, but I can confidently say that if you pack it correctly, this cooler wonʻt let you down. 

In terms of comfort, this Cooler has a bit more structure and weight overall than the Jaunt and the Pro, which means that it doesnʻt mold to your body quite like other models. That said, ICEMULE has added features youʻd expect on a premium hiking backpack in an impressive ergonomic design. 

The shoulder straps are double-padded air mesh and thereʻs an adjustable stabilizer strap. But our favorite added feature for comfort is the adjustable hip belt with padded, air mesh hip pads. The hip belt allows your hips – as opposed to your shoulders – to carry most of the weight, making it significantly more comfortable on long adventures.

Becuase the BOSS is a backpack cooler like the majority of ICEMULEʻs lineup, itʻs extremely portable. The only downside we can see in this category is that you canʻt collapse this one flat or roll it. However, seeing as thatʻs due to the burly insulation layer that keeps ice cold for literal days, itʻs one we can live with.

I love all of the extra features that are included on the BOSS. Like all ICEMULE backpack coolers, the seams are welded and use a roll-top design, making it fully waterproof. It also uses the same IM AirValve for increased insulation, durable exterior, and top-loading design. 

But it has several additional features that truly make it the BOSS of backpack coolers. First is 3 waterproof, insulated cargo pockets with waterproof zippers. In addition, you have molle webbing on both sides and industrial clip points on the bottom of the bag, making it easy to customize or attach additional items as needed.

My only complaint with this model is that loading the Cooler is a bit more challenging due to the thickness of the insulation. It makes the interior less flexible and more narrow than other models. This was not an issue when loading canned drinks or water bottles, but bulkier food items or containers can be a bit of a tight fit. That said, when loading a hard-sided cooler with zero flexibility, the challenge is even worse.

The ICEMULE BOSS comes in a single 30L size. When closed, it measures 12.5” x 9” x 25” and can hold 24 standard 12-oz cans or 5 750ml bottles plus ice.   List price on ICEMULE is $374.95.

ICEMULE Clear Review

New to the ICEMULE Cooler lineup in 2022, the Clear is a backpack cooler unlike any other. Designed specifically for events and venues that require clear bags for entry, the Clear allows you to keep food and drinks cold for 5-7 hours.

The Clear is the newest addition to the ICEMULE Coolers lineup and is designed for use in venues where clear bags are required.

• Unique clear design for events and venues

• The Clear is the only model we tested where we noticed sweating on the outside of the cooler.

Ice Retention & Insulation Value

In terms of ice retention, you’ll get several hours (up to 5-7) with the Clear, which was plenty of time to keep our drinks cool for an evening event or afternoon at the lake.

Unlike other models, we did experience some condensation accumulation and a bit of sweating on the exterior of the Clear in extremely hot (90°F and up) weather. I attribute this to the difference in the material on the Clear. However, it wasn’t significant enough to be a deal breaker – it was honestly a welcome cool down from the relentless heat.

Like other models, the Clear has padded, adjustable backpack straps that are comfortable to wear for extended periods. The sizing makes it perfect for adults or older kids (ours are 10 and 12) to carry.

The portability of the Clear is neck and neck with the Jaunt. It’s extremely portable, takes up a small amount of space, and is a great size for travel.

In terms of design, we’ve never seen another cooler like the Clear! The ability to have cold drinks AND meet the requirements of many venues is a huge perk.

We have run into a situation where the 9L was still a little larger than allowed. However, in one instance, I did compress it down as far as it would go and was able to enter. That said, I do highly recommend you double-check the measurements against the requirements of the venues you frequently visit.

The ICEMULE Clear comes in two sizes, 15L and 9L.

The 15 L measures 9″ x 8.5″ x 17″ when closed and can hold 12-15 standard size 12-oz cans, or 3-4 750 ml bottles plus ice.* List price on ICEMULE is $89.95.

ICEMULE Classic Review

The flagship model in the ICEMULE lineup, the Classic is designed to be a lightweight, waterproof cooler that is comfortable, durable, and versatile. Years later, it still delivers. 

Unique from the other coolers in this review that have two padded backpack straps, the Classic has a single sling-style strap (say that five times fast 😜)  that can be worn cross-body. 

The ICEMULE Classic is a versatile, budget-friendly option that is completely waterproof and will keep your drinks ice cold for up to 24 hours.

• Most budget-friendly option in the ICEMULE lineup, but doesn’t skimp on performance
• Wide variety of colors and sizes to fit your personal style and needs
• 9L Mini size option is great for personal use, or for kids
• Single strap, cross-body design may not be as comfortable for some people, especially in the larger sizes when fully loaded.
• The largest size available in this model is 20L, which may not be big enough for a full-day family outing (though we’d recommend the Pro or BOSS for larger capacity comfort anyway)

The ICEMULE Classic is engineered to keep your beverages cold for up to  24 hours, which is more than enough time for an afternoon at the park or a day at the lake. 

Unlike other models in this review, the Classic has a single sling-style strap for an easy cross-body carry. It’s comfortable enough with light loads (we tested the 9L model). However, I anticipate that a fully loaded 20L version would be less comfortable for long periods of time – especially for those with a larger bust. 

Out of the models we tested, the Classic is tied for most portable with the Jaunt. The smaller sizes and the ability to roll or collapse completely for storage make it one of my top picks for travel.

The Classic was designed to make it easier to take cold drinks on adventures and it delivers on that promise. When closed properly, its welded seams and lack of zippers make it completely waterproof – plus, it will also float, making it perfect for water activities. It’s no wonder that this design was the catalyst for an entire line of functional backpack coolers!

ICEMULE recommends that you use a 2:1 ice-to-can ratio for their backpack coolers for the best performance and ice retention. Properly closing the bag and adding air via the IM AirValve will aid in ice retention.   Personally, weʻve found that these Artic Ice Tundra Series ice packs work perfectly for us to reduce mess and keep things cold. However, itʻs essential to note that this series is intended to create a “freezer-like” temperature in coolers, and if you place food directly on top of them, it might freeze. We place a layer of cardboard between the ice pack and any food or drinks we donʻt want to be frozen. Or, if weʻre craving a treat, weʻll take popsicles or ice cream and place it directly on the ice pack. 😋

How do I close my ICEMULE Cooler?

The best way to close an ICEMULE Cooler with a roll-top, youʻll fold the top 2-3 times towards the front of the bag, then pull the clips together on the back towards the straps.

IceMule PRO should last for years, however, the website for IceMule states they will only warranty it for ninety (90) days. Spending $370+ for a backpack cooler with a 90 day warranty is up to you. I will look elsewhere after my IM PRO cooler wears out.

Totally understand your thoughts on this! I’m super curious – have you had any issues with yours?

I’m sure their warranty time frame has to do with the soft sided nature of the coolers in case someone is super rough on it beyond normal wear and tear. That said, another option is to purchase from REI. As a member, you can return up to a year later – which we have done – so it gives that extra assurance!

The IceMule Jaunt Is a Backpack Cooler You'll Want to Take Everywhere

It makes carrying nine cold cans—or three bottles of chilled wine—a hell of a lot more comfortable. Also, stylish.

This is a story of heartbreak. Mine, not yours. I was supposed to go camping over Fourth of July weekend, and then the weather did that weather thing where it sucked enormously, so our campsite in the White Mountains of New Hampshire was bereft two people who would've sat and watched a campfire and drank beer that was very very cold. A perfect picture, right? And it would've been another opportunity for me to use this cooler backpack from IceMule to keep those campfire beers cold, which I was inordinately excited about, almost as excited as I was to coax fire from kindling and fall asleep listening to the night. Still, the summer is young, and there are many more places to take this IceMule Jaunt bag yet.

It is essential to summer.

It's made to keep things very, very cold.

The Jaunt is a roll-top backpack, which means you stuff it with as much as you want—nine cans, or three bottles of chilled wine, or any assortment of lunch meats and deli cheeses for snacking—then roll the top down, fold in the ends, and clip them together. There's a valve to release extra air as you roll. However, if you keep the air locked in the dang thing will float; oh, and it's waterproof. Then, with its insulating layer and thick exterior (it feels like an inner tube commissioned by Navy SEALS), the Jaunt offers 24 hours of solid-ice-maintaining, and even longer chill time. Nice.

You'll bring it everywhere, comfortably.

Being the backpack that it is, the Jaunt is easier to carry than a boxy cooler with a weird handle that's prone to bumping the first layer of skin off your shins. That'll make itself abundantly clear if your summer plans include camping, hiking, picnicking, outdoor-concert-going, recreational-sports-playing, etc. It also has delightfully padded, adjustable straps. As for style, this blue-green colorway is sold out everywhere except Nordstrom right now; Nordstrom also carries one featuring splashes of red and orange. Head to Amazon for a heather gray or a sunset pink Jaunt. That range of colors all but seals the deal.

By city rail

The City Rail connects areas where there are no metro lines. Connects with the subway at the Moscow railway station. It has 2 lines: Sormovskaya and Priokskaya. The fare by train costs 28 rubles. According to the Citicard Transport Card, the fare is 26 rubles. Also by train you can get to the nearest suburb, or transfer to suburban trains to Dzerzhinsk, Bor, Semenov or Arzamas.

By bus and trolleybus

As of May 2017 in each district of the city there are several city bus routes. The number of trolleybus routes is much less. In one district of the city there are 1-2 trolleybus routes. Trolleybus routes are completely absent in the Leninsky city district. It is worth noting that trolleybuses do not connect the Lower City to the Upper. This is because the trolleybuses do not have enough power to climb the mountain.

The trolleybus network is divided into 3 parts:

• The upper trolleybus network (it unites all three districts - Nizhegorodsky, Sovetsky and Prioksky) with a turning circle on the Minin Square, near the Kremlin.
• The lower trolleybus network (connects Kanavinsky, Moskovsky and Sormovsky districts)
• The Avtozavod trolleybus network (connects all the distant sleeping microdistricts among themselves)

Throughout the city, land trams run. The longest route of all is 417. It connects the outskirts of Avtozavodsky district with the Moskovsky Rail Terminal. The journey takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The route passes through the sleeping areas (approximately 75% of the way). Also in remote neighborhoods there are routes of several more trams, but in most cases, they are in the Upper City. By the way, you can reach there by tram 27 or 10 directly from the Moscow railway station.

By marshrutka

Marshrutkas do not stop at every stop. To indicate your intention to exit a marshrutka, press a button and to indicate your intention to enter a marshrutka en-route, you need to wave your hand.

Nizhny Novgorod has not very developed bicycle infrastructure. Special bike paths exist only on the Upper-Volga and Lower-Volga embankments and on Rozhdestvenskaya Street.

The upper city is very hilly and full of steep inclines and even many locals will get off their bicycles and push their bikes up the hill by foot. Drivers can be reckless and pose a danger to cyclists. The roads can also be icy during the winter. City cyclists solve this problem by replacing summer tires with winter tires.

Also, in 2017 the implementation of a new integrated transport scheme of the city began. It provides for a large number of bicycle paths in the Upper City (including on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street) and in the Lower City.

Proper maintenance of your ICEMULE is key to ensuring optimal performance. If you've only stored ice inside (i.e. no food or spilled beer or soda), simply pour the ice out, wipe it down with a towel, and hang the ICEMULE upside down to dry.

Follow these steps on how to clean your ICEMULE:

*Please be sure to properly close your AirValve when cleaning. We do not recommend turning the cooler inside out for cleaning or any other reason.*

• Start by removing any debris by sprinkling a bit of baking soda onto a clean towel and rubbing that onto the surface of your ICEMULE.
• Next, mix one-part vinegar with two parts water and a couple of tablespoons of Murphy's Oil Soap, soak a clean towel in the solution, and wipe the mixture all over the surface before rinsing clean with a wet towel.
• If you have any spots to remove on your ICEMULE, you can make a paste with baking soda, which is known for brightening surfaces and lifting stains.
• To make a baking soda paste, simply mix three parts baking soda with one part water and add five to ten drops of dish soap to the paste mixture. Apply a bit of paste to the stain and use a clean cloth to scrub the area. After the stain has been lifted, wipe any remaining residue off of your ICEMULE with a towel andwarm water.
