10 Places Every Hello Kitty Fan Needs to Visit

Sery Kim is an attorney and freelance food and travel writer based in Texas. She has appeared on ABC, CBS, and FOX, and has contributed to CNN Travel , The Daily Telegraph , Travel + Leisure , Food & Wine , and more.

In 1974, the Japanese company Sanrio introduced the world to a cuteness icon: a wide-eyed white cat with a big red bow; one who lives in London with her parents and her twin sister, Mimmy. Hello Kitty, as you likely know her, became a global star, with more than $1 billion of licensed Hello Kitty products sold annually.

The outpouring of love for this cartoon character goes beyond mere merchandise. In addition to a Hello Kitty convention in 2014 and a 45th anniversary tour in 2019, there have been numerous travel partnerships in Japan and other worldwide destinations — from spas and hotel rooms to theme parks and restaurants — for fans to fully immerse themselves in the world of Hello Kitty. Ahead, find 10 places every Hello Kitty fan should visit at some point.

Sanrio Puroland — Tokyo, Japan

Visitors to Tokyo can visit Sanrio Puroland , the pinnacle of all things Hello Kitty. At this indoor theme park located in the western Tokyo suburb of Tama, Sanrio favorites including Hello Kitty, Little Twin Stars, My Melody, and Badtz-Maru meet and greet visitors daily. Start the visit with a relaxing Sanrio Character Boat Ride or have a bite to eat in the Character Food Court. Attractions also include full-scale musicals and audience participation shows, restaurants, and of course, gift shops.

Hello Kitty Cafe Trucks — United States

In October 2014, to celebrate 40 years of Hello Kitty, Sanrio launched its first food venture in North America with the Hello Kitty Cafe Truck. Since then, a second truck has been introduced, and they've traveled throughout the United States serving delicious baked goods to thousands of fans. The trucks offer macarons, madeleines, and more, all emblazoned with Hello Kitty's signature details. Check the trucks' website or Instagram for upcoming locations and latest news.

Hello Kitty Beauty Spa — Dubai

Hello Kitty beauty fanatics in Dubai can get pampered at the Hello Kitty Beauty Spa . This American-style spa specializes in hair and nail treatments, for both "princesses" (visitors age 11 and younger) and "queens" (kids and adults age 12 and up). The hardest part? Picking what type of Hello Kitty nail art you want.

Hello Kitty Shop at Universal Studios Florida — Orlando

Most people head to Orlando's Universal Studios for Harry Potter World, but don't skip the Hello Kitty shop . It's the first Hello Kitty retail store in a theme park in North America, with most of the products exclusive to the park. Signature items include a movie mash-up collection with Hello Kitty in iconic scenes from some of Universal Studios' best films, including "Jaws," "Back to the Future," and "E.T." Other fun merchandise ranges from stationery and home goods to sportswear, with new designs and products released regularly.

Hello Kitty Grand Cafe — Irvine, California

The Hello Kitty Grand Cafe serves freshly baked cookies, cakes, donuts, seasonal goodies, and hot and iced drinks at its sit-down location at the Irvine Spectrum Center in Southern California. You can order afternoon tea accompanied by savory finger sandwiches and sweets. Cocktails are offered Wednesday through Saturday evenings. There's also a selection of Hello Kitty merchandise for sale.

Hello Kitty Cafe at the Park MGM Las Vegas — Nevada

This Hello Kitty Cafe in Las Vegas offers take-out counter service with outdoor seating at the Park MGM . The menu includes colorful donuts, mini-cakes, cookies, pastries, and more. Hello Kitty merchandise is also sold here, along with hot and cold drinks.

Hello Kitty Cafe at Fashion Show Las Vegas — Nevada

This Hello Kitty Cafe debuted in July 2022 at Fashion Show Las Vegas, an indoor shopping mall on the Strip across from the Wynn Las Vegas. Here, sip on drinks like flavored lemonade and iced tea. Sweet treats include donuts, mini-cakes, cookies, and pastries. Hello Kitty merchandise — such as clothing, tote bags, and water bottles — is also for sale.

Grand Chariot — Awaji Island, Japan

At Grand Chariot , an upscale property set on a hill on Awaji Island, Japan — about 20 miles southwest of Kobe — three rooms (also called "cocoons") are tricked out in Hello Kitty decor. First, there's Hello Kitty Star Cocoon, which flaunts a pastel star mural above the bed and similar designs on throw pillows in the spacious living area. The Hello Kitty '70s room, meanwhile, is decorated with simple, primary-color drawings, and the Hello Kitty Natural Forest room features the main character drawn amid watercolor illustrations of forest animals.

Hello Kitty Apple Land — Awaji Island, Japan

Just a short drive from Awaji Island's Grand Chariot hotel, with its Hello Kitty-themed rooms, is Hello Kitty Apple Land , which comprises three different attractions — the ultimate one-stop shop for Hello Kitty fans. Hello Kitty Show Box is a theater where you watch a live show and dine on vegan food. Within walking distance is Hello Kitty Apple House — a giant apple-shaped attraction with an observatory and cafe. And slightly further afield is Hello Kitty Smile , which has multiple restaurants, opportunities to purchase limited-edition merchandise, and a digital art show featuring Hello Kitty (of course).

Harmonyland — Hiji, Japan

Harmonyland is an outdoor theme park in Japan's Oita Prefecture, about 70 miles southeast of Kitakyushu. Hello Kitty and other Sanrio characters make appearances here at live shows. But you can be sure to meet up with Hello Kitty, who will pose for a photo with you, at Kitty Castle. There are several rides and attractions at Harmonyland, including a Hello Kitty coaster and a giant ferris wheel, where the passenger cars are embellished with the faces of different beloved Sanrio characters.

Here's how I spent a day at Sanrio's Hello Kitty theme park in Japan.

Kim K and North West are fans.

You’ve probably heard of Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan, but did you know there’s a Hello Kitty theme park you can visit as well? Sanrio Puroland is an indoor amusement park themed to Hello Kitty and other Sanrio characters like My Melody, Cinnamoroll, and Kuromi. The park, which Kim Kardashian and North West have visited, is located within Tokyo. Since I consider myself a theme park connoisseur who also happens to have a nostalgic love for all things Sanrio, I knew it was a must for my first trip to Japan. However, every vlog I saw on TikTok could not prepare me for everything there was to see at Sanrio’s Hello Kitty theme park.

Just like any other theme park, Sanrio Puroland has Insta-worthy food and thrilling rides as well as some adorable character meet and greets that include both popular and more obscure characters. There’s also plenty of shopping to be done at the Hello Kitty theme park, which includes some exclusive merch that can only be found in Japan. The park itself covers just four floors and only has two rides, but I ended up spending my entire day at Sanrio Puroland and still didn’t get to everything I wanted to do. To help you better navigate your trip, here are some Sanrio Puroland tips to keep in mind.

Figure Out Your Ticket Situation Ahead Of Time

I went to Sanrio's Hello Kitty theme park in Japan.

Something that was slightly frustrating about planning a trip to Japan was that a lot of things you couldn’t buy until you got to Tokyo or you had to reserve several months in advance. Getting tickets to Sanrio Puroland was just as confusing. In order to purchase tickets yourself, you have to register for Sanrio’s fan club before reserving a visit for the specific day you want to attend the park. Then, you can purchase a passport (aka a ticket). The price per day varies depending on which day of the week you want to go, and ranges from around $25 to $34.

I had my friend from Japan handle getting the tickets since there were so many steps and she was a little more familiar with the process. If you’re also struggling, getting your tickets from a third party site like Klook can save you the stress.

Factor In Travel Time

Sanrio Puroland is in Tama, which is around an hour away from Tokyo Station on the train. Just be mindful of how far you might have to travel when planning your day. After all, you want to make the most of your time, so getting there earlier before the crowds can help make sure you see and do everything you want to. Something that I loved was how the train station near Sanrio Puroland was Hello Kitty-themed, so you already felt like you were there as soon as you arrived.

Schedule Your Character Meet And Greets Early

Instead of having characters out and about for you to take pictures with, Sanrio Puroland currently has a scheduled meet and greet section of the park called the Character Greeting Residence . Each day, they’ll have a list of the characters who are available to meet, and you’ll need to book a time slot to come back and get a picture with them.

You can only book one character at a time, since it’s based on a single QR code sent to your phone, and slots fill up quickly. If you want to see a ton of characters, you’ll want to schedule your visits early in the day and have every single person in your party book a different character on their phone. It honestly felt like scheduling meet and greets at a Comic Con-like event, but with my group of four, we were able to get three meet and greets with Dear Daniel, Badtz-Maru, and Pochacco.

Prioritize The Rides

I went to Sanrio Puroland in Japan, and rode the My Melody ride.

There are only two rides at Sanrio Puroland, and they’re popular. After scheduling your meet and greets with characters, I recommend going to either of the rides and waiting in line. We only had to wait about 20 minutes for the My Melody and Kuromi Mymeroad Drive ride since it was the first thing we did. Later in the day, the wait time was much longer and over an hour.

The Sanrio Character Boat Ride was probably the most popular of the two, and had a super long line the entire day. To avoid having to wait, we purchased a Puropass. It’s like Sanrio Puroland’s version of a FastPass, and allows you to bypass waiting in line. This was only $10 and included up to four people, so it was perfect for my group. All you had to do was book a time to come back to the ride from a kiosk.

Shop For Cute Sanrio Character Accessories

You want to fully immerse yourself in the world of Hello Kitty, so it’s a must to stop by the Entrance Shop right away to pick up a Sanrio character headband. These headbands are like Mickey Mouse ears at Disneyland, and you’ll see almost everyone wearing one. You can also shop for souvenirs and exclusive Sanrio Puroland merch here as well as the other stores in the park, but you don’t want to be carrying that around all day. This stop in the morning is just for accessories to wear.

Plan For The Parades And Shows

The best way to see as many Sanrio characters as you can is to camp out for one of the parades or shows at Sanrio Puroland. The Miracle Gift Parade is a must, so I highly recommend getting a good spot. Unfortunately, you do have to camp out if you want a front row seat, but there are Puropasses that range from $7 to $21 per person, depending on the view.

There are also stage shows that happen throughout the day, but you have to keep an eye on the schedule. Even though Sanrio Puroland is pretty small, we had a difficult time seeing everything we wanted to because of the crowds and trying to fit everything into our schedule of character meet and greets.

Check Out The Different Cafes For Insta-Worthy Food

The Sanrio Puroland cafe had Hello Kitty character curry and other Insta-worthy food.

There are five restaurants at Sanrio’s Hello Kitty theme park. The Restaurant Yakata is a character dining experience, but the rest are more like cafeterias and cafe-style places. All restaurants have adorable and Insta-worthy food, so foodies will not be disappointed wherever they go. My friends and I stopped at the Character Food Court first for some curry. I got the pink My Melody, while my friend got the green Pochacco curry. Both were tasty, but more cute than they were delicious. Later on, we stopped by the Cinnamoroll Dream Cafe for cappuccino jelly lattes and Cinnamoroll desserts.

Visit Hello Kitty’s House

Hello Kitty isn’t available to meet at the Character Greeting Residence, because she has her own attraction — Lady Kitty House . This walkthrough experience lets you see Hello Kitty’s mansion IRL, which has photo opportunities throughout. At the end, you’ll get to meet Hello Kitty and snap one professional pic with her.

Unfortunately, you can’t take pics with your own camera and you have to pay for the pic they take. However, they give you a digital download of your pic, so if you’re in a group, you can split the cost (which was about $7).

Bring Money And Wear Comfortable Shoes

Two major Sanrio Puroland tips I have for anyone wanting to visit is to bring money and wear shoes you don’t mind walking in all day. Since the theme park is located in one building, it’s a lot of walking up and down flights or stairs. There are escalators but you’ll be doing a lot of walking. My feet were pretty tired at the end of the day, so to make sure you can keep going, opt for the comfy shoes in your luggage.

The money is so that you can take advantage of things like the Puropass kiosks and arcade games. Japan is known for their capsule and vending machines, which are all over Sanrio Puroland, so you’ll need some yen in order to use them. I also used my money for one of the Hello Kitty popcorn machines, which was a delicious decision.

Hello Kitty’s Japan

July 9, 2018 by Robert Schrader 1 Comment

I fully realize, as I write this post, that the prospect of Hello Kitty travel isn’t going to appeal to all of you. And that’s fine—I’ve got dozens of blog posts and Japan trip ideas full of activities that have nothing to do with Sanrio characters, even if it is difficult to avoid kawaii culture altogether in Japan.

As for this post, I’ve not only spotlighted some Sanrio locations throughout Japan, but other ways to include Hello Kitty, including planes and Japanese trains . I’ll even mention a couple of Hello Kitty places you can encounter secondary Sanrio characters, including my personal favorite Gudetama.

Where Does Hello Kitty Come From?

If you’re thinking about Hello Kitty Japan, you might assume that the popular Sanrio character comes from someplace obvious, like Tokyo or Kyoto. In fact, while Sanrio is currently headquartered in Tokyo’s Shinagawa ward, the company’s roots are actually in Yamanashi prefecture, which is also home to Mt. Fuji (also known as Fuji-san —that’s where the company’s name comes from!).

While you can find Hello Kitty all around Japan, as I’m about to detail below, in many a Sanrio store, theme park, cafe and beyond, she was technically born in Yamanashi: She first appeared in 1974, just months after the formal establishment of the Sanrio corporation.

Where to Visit Hello Kitty in Japan

Sanrio puroland.

If you’ve heard rumors about a Hello Kitty theme park in Japan, they’re true. Located in Tama, Tokyo, Sanrio Puroland is an indoor amusement park that has rides and shows dedicated to a number of Sanrio characters, including Hello Kitty herself. It’s one of the best Hello Kitty Tokyo experiences you can have!

Hello Kitty Airplane

Hello Kitty also has an airplane (well, a couple of them) painted in her likeness, though this has evoked some controversy outside of Asia. Read my friend Becky’s review of flying on one of the Hello Kitty EVA Air planes  (you’ll want to pay particular attention to this review, since it’s about the plane that flies to Japan on occasion) or watch Hello Kitty herself inaugurate EVA Air’s Taipei-Houston route a few years ago—to the sound of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” no less. I guess it’s a little strange that the Hello Kitty airline isn’t theoretically a Japanese one, but what can you do?

Hello Kitty Hotel

There’s not an entire Hello Kitty hotel, but you can reserve the  “Hello Kitty” room at the Keio Plaza Tokyo Hotel , and as far as you’re concerned you will be sleeping in one!

Hello Kitty Shinkansen

Like those about the airplane, rumors of a Hello Kitty train are true. In fact, the limited edition Hello Kitty Shinkansen , which will run on the Sanyo line that runs westward from Osaka, are going to enter service soon. Buy your ticket to Japan now if you want to speed through Japan on one, and book your Hello Kitty Osaka adventure!

Hello Kitty Shops and Cafés

If you’re looking for Hello Kitty in Tokyo you’ll want to make a beeline for Shinjuku , where you’ll find Japan’s largest Hello Kitty store. You can also find a Hello Kitty House in Shibuya, as well as in Kyoto, Osaka and Sapporo ; and Hello Kitty cafe and Hello Kitty kitchen locations throughout the country. My personal favorite is Café de Miki in Odaiba, Tokyo, both because of its awesome location as well as the attention to detail of the Hello Kitty cafe menu.

Hello Kitty Shrine

While there was once a Hello Kitty temple (which is to say a shrine that was very much not built to Hello Kitty herself, but which a fan of the character hijacked), it sadly no longer exists . Likewise, there is no Hello Kitty museum to my knowledge.

Special Hello Kitty Merchandise

You can find a significant amount of regional Hello Kitty merchandise throughout Japan, from the Hello Kitty geisha in Kyoto , to a bizarre “black egg” version at Hakone ‘s Owakudani, a geyser whose sulfur-rich water causes eggs cooked in it to turn black.

Destinations Related to Other Sanrio Characters

While Hello Kitty is far and away the most popular Sanrio character, Sanrio travel is not limited to Hello Kitty in Japan. My personal favorite Sanrio character, “lazy egg” Gudetama, is about to have a Seibu line train painted in its honor . (If you know anything about Gudetama, then you must truly worry for the people who will ride this train—that’s going to be one slow service!)

At the aforementioned Sanrio Puroland (aka Hello Kitty World), meanwhile, you’ll not only find a “Character Foodcourt” that includes dishes themed using characters from Chococat all the way to Spottie Dottie. There’s even a dedicated “My Melody Dream Cafe” for those of you who are fans of the rabbit. And to be honest, though I’ve tried to be as comprehensive as possible in this post, this is really only the beginning of Sanrio Japan travel!

Other FAQ About Hello Kitty Places

Is there a hello kitty land in japan.

There isn’t a “Hello Kitty Land” in Japan, per se, although you can see Hello Kitty at Sanrio Puroland, which is located outside of Tokyo. As a bonus, you can also see many of Hello Kitty’s friends there, which is perfect (purrfect?) if you’re a Sanrio fan.

Where does Hello Kitty live?

Hello Kitty was created in Yamanashi prefecture Japan. With this being said, it’s difficult to pin her down to any one home—Hello Kitty lives in all our hearts, and in countless shops, restaurants and other outlets all around the world.

Is Sanrio Japanese or Chinese?

Sanrio is a Japanese corporation, although its characters are also very popular in China. On that note, make sure you only buy Hello Kitty merchandise at official Sanrio outlets in China, as “Fake Kitty” swag is very popular (and often indistinguishable from the real thing).

The Bottom Line

Whether you intend on executing these Hello Kitty Japan travel plans or are simply curious about how far-reaching Sanrio’s most popular character is in the real world, I hope this post has been illuminating. Would you go to Sanrio Puroland, or would you simply take a trip on the Hello Kitty Shinkansen and call it a day? Personally, I’m waiting for the day when other characters (namely, Gudetama ) are as represented in Japan as Hello Kitty, but I’ll take all the kawaii I can get for now, whether I see Hello Kitty in Osaka or anywhere else in Japan.
