These vessels, typically motor yachts, can't provide some of the luxurious amenities available on larger ships, but they do ensure personalized service, a more intimate experience, and quicker trips on and off the boat.

Quasar Grace

The 18-passenger Grace was once owned by Grace Kelly. She and Prince Rainier spent part of their honeymoon on the motor yacht, and now you can sleep in their bedroom, the Grace Kelly Suite, which is one of nine rooms aboard. Large Galápagos Ships

Galápagos National Park officials have set a maximum of 100 passengers per vessel, so these are some of the largest ships in the archipelago. Travelers may opt for a larger-capacity cruise ship for more space (such as bigger hallways and staircases for easier movement around the ship) and increased services like an onboard doctor. The downside of traveling on a large ship is the time it can take to complete transfers by zodiac from the boat to the islands. Also, some areas of the Galápagos may be off limits to larger ships.

The 16-passenger Celebrity Xploration is arguably the most luxurious catamaran in the Galápagos. What’s included in your galapagos islands cruising tour.

You’ll have comfortable accommodation on the boat each night as you cruise around the islands of the Galapagos. As a rule, expect your days to be filled with walking treks and snorkelling, all accompanied by an experienced naturalist guide and a variety of optional activities. Excluding the first and last days of the trip, fresh meals will be provided by the on-board chef for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

What’s not included in your Galapagos Islands cruising tour?

Any activities not listed in the itinerary for each trip that have not been assessed by us. Therefore, our staff and leaders cannot assist with booking these activities. The decision to partake in any activity not listed is at your own discretion.

This includes any and all diving activities. Due to our internal safety policy, our leaders are specifically prohibited from recommending or assisting with booking diving activities.

The additional following costs are also not included in our listed travel prices:

What’s the difference between Intrepid's cruising tours and other Galapagos Islands trips?

There's no better way to see the Galapagos Islands than by boat. Unlike our other trips, which rely on ferries and overland travel, boats allow you to discover the more remote islands, like Fernandina, the west coast of Isabela and the bird watcher’s paradise of Genovesa.

The authorities ensure that the number of boats at each site at any one time are limited. Far from restricting your experience, this system enhances it because the itineraries are designed in such a way as to eliminate the amount of vessel crossover. The result is visitors witness more of the wildlife they’ve come to see without vying with boatloads of other tourists to see it.

Where are the Galapagos Islands?

The Galapagos Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean off the western coast of Ecuador in South America, right on the equator.

How far are the islands from mainland Ecuador?

The islands are 973 kilometres (605 miles) off the Ecuadorian coast and are considered remote from the mainland.

When’s the best time to visit the Galapagos Islands?

One of the best things about the Galapagos is that it has one of the most temperate climates on the planet making it a great place to visit all year round. 

If you’re seeking the warmth, temperatures average around 86°F from January to May, but you’ll encounter some humidity and the occasional rain shower. The cooler dry season from June to December sees temperatures closer to the 80°F mark, but this is also when sea mammals and birdlife tend to be easiest to spot.

That being said, there’s something to see all year round, with giant tortoise eggs hatching in January, blue-footed boobies dancing their way through courtship in May, and fur sea lion pups abundant in October.

What is the climate like?

While the Galapagos Islands are on the equator, its unique location means it avoids the extremes of a tropical climate and the weather is fairly reasonable all year round. They do experience a distinct ‘dry season’ from June to December and a ‘warm season’ from January to May. The dry season brings the Humboldt Current from the south to cool the air and water. While the highlands of the larger islands stay green with the atmospheric mist that creeps over the skyline, there’s little precipitation around the sea-level islands. The warm season brings higher temperatures to the islands and the water that surrounds them, while the skyline gets a little cloudier, with rain a daily occurrence.

What is the water temperature in the Galapagos?

Average water temperatures vary between seasons. From January to June, the water tends to be between 70°F to 80°F, while from July to December, temperatures are closer to 65°F to 75°F.

Do you cruise between the islands during the day or at night?

The short answer is a bit of both. Expect to do some island-hopping during the day, but the longer hours of travel will likely take place in the evening. Check your daily itinerary for specific travel information.

How rough are the seas? Will I get seasick?

The waters around the Galapagos Islands are usually pretty calm, and seasickness is a minor issue for most passengers. Big swells and major storms are rare.

January to April are known for pretty glassy conditions with only minor swells, while the water starts to get rougher from June to August. The shifting Humboldt Current makes August and September the months with the liveliest waters. Consequently, travel times can be longer than usual. If you suffer from seasickness, you may want to reconsider travelling during this period.

The extent and severity of seasickness vary from person to person. Some may be lucky enough to experience no symptoms at all, while others may suffer headaches, dizziness and vomiting. Usually, all symptoms of seasickness resolve after some time adjusting to life onboard. If you're prone to motion sickness, we recommend consulting your doctor before arriving to see what medications may work for you.

How much should we tip the staff and crew?

If you have enjoyed the services your guide and crew provided, a tip will be very much appreciated. As a guideline USD $10-15 per passenger, per day, is standard for the crew, with $7-10 per day for your guide. Tips can be left in envelopes in your cabin on the last day of your journey.

Some restaurants may already include a 10% service charge in the bill, in which case an extra tip isn't required. At places that don't, feel free to round up the bill or leave some spare change.

What activities are included?

The included activities vary with each day and trip, but as a rule, most guided walking treks and snorkelling activities are included. Check your daily itinerary for specific information.

How do we get from the boat to the shore?

You will be using a zodiac boat (or panga) during wet and dry landings and when returning from snorkeling.

What food will be offered on-board?

Meals will be prepared by your on-board chef for breakfast, lunch and dinner, using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. For breakfast, expect toast, spreads, muesli and eggs with fresh fruit and juices. Lunch will typically be a mix of hot and cold dishes, as well as salads or vegetables, fruit salad and juice. Dinner includes fresh seafood, chicken or pork, pasta, rice, vegetables, salads, and dessert.

Are drinks available on-board?

Coffee, tea, soft drinks and water are available 24 hours. Each boat also comes with a fully stocked bar.

What should I pack for the Galapagos Islands?

The weather in the Galapagos is fairly temperate all year round. In most cases you’ll either be in the water snorkeling, on an island walking or relaxing on the boat as you travel between islands. You should check the Essential Information of your trip for a specific list, but below is a suggested packing guide for the Galapagos:

Daypack (a smaller backpack that you can take with you on island excursions)

Comfortable clothing for warmer temperatures (shorts, t-shirts, light long-sleeved tops and pants)

A fleece or warmer jumper for the evenings or early mornings

A light raincoat or poncho

Comfortable shoes. Trainers or walking shoes are sufficient for most trips, however, several trips include a volcano walk and some travelers may feel more comfortable in hiking shoes or boots.

Sandals or thongs/flip flops/sandals

Sunscreen (bio-degradable and waterproof if available) and lip balm (to combat the effects of windburn)

Sunhat (that can be secured as it can get windy out on the water)

Swimming costume

Water bottle (filtered water is available on board the boat)

Bio-degradable shampoo, conditioner and soap

Pegs (so you can hang your swimming costume or towel out to dry)

Insect repellent (for island visits)

US adaptor/electrical plug

Binoculars (for keen birdwatchers)

Camera (underwater if you have one)

Any required medications

Some travelers bring their own snorkeling equipment, but this is a personal choice. Diving masks, snorkels and fins are provided onboard the vessel for all passengers. Beach towels are also provided. Wetsuits are available for hire at an additional cost.

Are there any luggage restrictions?

Although each cabin has space to store bags, space is always restricted on a boat, so we suggest you take a backpack or soft-sided duffle bag. These bags should be easily stored in your cabin. Larger fixed suitcases are usually too big to store in the cupboard space.

If you're travelling with a larger bag, you can leave it behind at the start hotel on Day 1 and borrow one of our kit bags, which hold about 12kg. The hotel provides this service, and although we haven’t had issues with theft in the past, we highly recommend that you don’t leave any valuables behind.

The airline we use for our Galapagos trips has a check-in baggage allowance of 23kg per person and a cabin baggage allowance of 10kg.

Will there be a certified nature guide on board?

Each trip is accompanied by an experienced naturalist guide. Our guides are registered and trained in conservation and natural sciences by the Charles Darwin Foundation and licensed by the Galapagos National Park Service. The guide will be on board with you for the duration of the trip and will accompany you on all excursions.

Can I charge my phone on-board?

You can charge your phone on-board, however, electricity in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands requires US plugs so you may need to take an adapter.

Additionally, mobile phone coverage is almost non-existent while travelling around the islands. You may find that you only have some limited service when you are closer to the bigger islands.

Is internet access available on-board?

Wi-fi is not available on the boat at all in the Galapagos Islands. There's limited access on the bigger islands of Santa Cruz, San Cristobal and Isabela and there may also be the occasional internet cafe for you to use if there is time.

Is there air conditioning on-board?

Cabins are air-conditioned, as are communal indoor areas.

Do I need any immunisations or vaccinations to visit the Galapagos Islands?

Though there is no risk of yellow fever in the Galapagos Islands, travelers from infected areas must obtain a vaccination certificate.

You should visit your doctor or travel clinic for up-to-date advice and schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

How Much Does A Galápagos Cruise Cost?

This typically depends on cruise length, comfort level of your boat and choice of cabin category, although seasonal and single supplements may also apply. On average, short cruises of 5 days or less cost from $2,500 pp, and longer cruises of 8 days or longer from $5,000 pp based on double occupancy.

Prices typically exclude the cost of flights to the islands (around $500) and the National Park entrance fee (currently $100, soon to be $200 starting 1 Aug 2024). Most cruises are all-inclusive with the exception of alcoholic beverages and tips. To help reduce the cost, keep apprised of last minute Galapagos Islands cruise deals or consider a private Galapagos cruise charter which often prove more cost effective if traveling in a group.

Do I Need A Visa For The Galápagos Islands?

You do not need a visa for the Galapagos Islands per se, but you may require a visa for entry into Ecuador dependent upon your nationality. U.S. citizens do not need a visa to enter Ecuador for stays less than 90 days in any 12-month period, however your passport must be valid for at least six months at the date of entry and have one blank page for your entry stamp. There are, however, several entry requirements for the Galapagos (see below).

Are There Any Galápagos Entry Requirements?

To enter Galapagos, travelers must present the following documents at the airport in Quito or Guayaquil before their flight to the islands:

• Return air tickets between the mainland and Galapagos
• Private travel health insurance
• Transit Control Card, which is available at the airport for a cost of $20 (cash only)

Upon arrival at the airport in Galapagos, travelers must then present their Transit Control Card, and pay the requisite National Park entry fee before they are allowed to enter.

How Many Days Should You Spend In Galápagos?

We always recommend a minimum of 5 days to adequately experience the Galapagos Islands and strongly advise 8 days to truly appreciate their incredible endemic species and otherworldly landscapes. What Is The Food Like On A Galapagos Cruise?

The cruises offer a wide selection of international and Ecuadorian food , including a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, chicken, rice and pasta, as well as fish and seafood which, as you might imagine, is abundant and fresh. The most famous local dish is the ceviche, made with freshly-caught lobster, octopus, squid, or shrimp.

Most cruises will serve meals in a relaxed buffet-style. However, high-end vessels may offer more formal dining arrangements. Please let us know beforehand of any specific dietary requirements or allergies for us to inform the chef on board.

The food was incredible. Some of the best soups I've had in my life. The change I'd recommend is instead of having dessert directly after lunch, to serve it at 3pm as a mid afternoon snack. The dessert was too enticing to pass up and having it after delicious food made for a very full belly.

Aaron was very helpful, providing not only specific and high level information but also addressed all my questions and put me at ease (which he can tell you is not an easy job, as I am a worrier). He helped me understand logistics and pros/cons of various situations.

Crew & Guides Review

Carlos, the expedition leader, was organized and helpful in making decisions about which excursions to take. He helped make things funny and memorable where possible. The suggestion I have for him would be that he can be a bit long winded. I process better with brief oral instructions and information followed-up in writing. There was always written information but I'd prefer a shorter speech, or not to tie critical information in with non-critical so I could leave early if I needed to go rest. Sebastian was phenomenal. I couldn't imagine better care or being treated more like family. Throughout the trip, I felt like Sebastian was taking care of just my family. It wasn't until the last day that I realized many families felt that way. Sebastian changed the feel of the trip from a vacation with strangers to vacationing with extended family, all of whom cared for us and our well being. In every moment I felt safe, cared for, and that anything I could need was not only met but anticipated in advance. The Zodiac crew - drivers and boat loaders - were extremely helpful. Passengers had varying physical abilities and they made everyone feel cared for and that it was a pleasure to help them enjoy themselves rather than a burden to adjust and accommodate. The wait staff was warm, friendly, knew us by name.

All the arrangements were effected without a hitch. Drivers and guides met us at the airports and hotels. They were never late - in fact, they often came early. The expedition on La Pinta was just right for us - the itinerary, boat size, and amenities were perfect. Lastly, the trip to Cuenca was interesting and we very much enjoyed the architecture, restaurants, scenery, and the nearby gem of a national park.

The trip was all about the Galapagos Islands, and they did not disappoint. Seeing how treating animals with respect results in a very peaceful coexistence was eye-opening. I came away with some amazing pictures and experiences, including swimming with playful sea lions and stepping around iguanas and tortoises. That said, Cuenca was wonderful. We may very likely go back there after I retire to spend the winter months at least one year. What a beautiful city!

Quito is a big city and not particularly attractive. Our tour guide was good, but that did not change the fact that it was not somewhere we would want to spend a lot of time. We were told not to go out at night (though one restaurant had a free car service and it was worth the trip), versus in Cuenca where we went to a great restaurant about fifteen minutes from our hotel and walked back along the city streets after dark with no concern. There are some areas to avoid, but generally it seems to be a very safe city that also boasts clean tap water (though a several day acclimation period is recommended).

The hotels in Quito and Cuenca were very nice - particularly the one in Cuenca, which like many hotels there is a converted home of some wealthy resident. The accommodations on La Pinta were roomier than I had expected, with a large bed, big window and a bathroom with excellent water pressure and plentiful hot water. The boat, with 41 tourists on board, was just the right size.

The meals we had on our own on the mainland were good, particularly the breakfasts in Quito. On the boat, we enjoyed the meals very much, though breakfast and lunch buffets were clearly the highlight and the sit-down dinners were less impressive. We also had salmon our first night on the boat that could have been fresher. However, the lunches more than made up for the minor glitches.

All of our guides/naturalists on La Pinta were good. They were very knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic. In Quito, we had a good guide, notwithstanding she had a limited palette of locations to work with. Our guide in Cuenca was excellent too. All guides and naturalists were very proficient in English, though when we were off the boat, we tried speaking Spanish as often as we could.

The arrangements were perfect. Not a glitch in the entire nearly two weeks. I was so pleased that drivers and guides were always there when they were supposed to be there and made us feel like we were in good hands.

Andrew was great. That's why I'm planning a trip to Peru through him. Information was provided in a very clear and relatively concise manner. We kept the trip instructions close at hand, particularly when on the mainland. The only thing I did on my own without instructions to prepare for the trip was to visit the Mayo Clinic's travel clinic, where they made sure certain vaccinations were up to date and prescribed Diamox for altitude sickness in case I had an issue, as well as something for stomach upset (which was really not an issue).

I am just very happy to have found AdventureSmith. The agency and agent, Andrew, were recommended by friends of ours who were on the same boat as we were some years ago. I am looking forward to working with Andrew and AdventureSmith again when my younger daughter and I travel to Machu Picchu. I have already mentioned AdventureSmith to several people.

Traveler Advice

Just that they should do their homework to get the most out of the trip, bring the proper clothes (we traveled very light but were just fine), and check in with a doctor to make sure you don't spend days dealing with altitude sickness or have some other issue (after visiting the doctor, we bought DEET mosquito repellent which was not necessary all that often, but we are glad we did). I took Diamox and my wife (who did not take any meds) had just one day on arrival in Quito when she had a splitting headache, but then we both hiked for a couple hours at nearly 13,000 feet and we were both fine. I will definitely make sure my daughter and I have Diamox before we land in Cusco.

We loved the Mountain Lodges Salkantay Hike. The Salkantay Mountain Lodges were fantastic, only one thing would really help would be some form of drying room or oil heaters to dry wet clothing.

I was hoping to take some weight off, but that wasn't going to happen with 3 course meals everywhere we went.  The meals were amazing and having a 3 course lunch made for us up in the mountains was awesome. 

Peter and Desirae Guides at the Galapagos were wonderfully knowledgeable and friendly people, we really liked them we just found that they lectured for too long, 1km walks taking 3 hours with most of it being lectures.  Just a little too much information.

Very impressed with Andrew's expertise and co-ordination of our trip, I changed my mind on what we wanted to do on numerous occasions and he effortlessly (well that is how he made it seem to me) gave me new itineraries, with prices and times etc. The Galapagos wildlife was my original destination and since we were going to be in the area and its a long way to come from Australia we tacked Machu Picchu on and are very glad we did. Thank you, Andrew.

- Make sure to take insect repellent and if you have issues with bites, some antihistamines.

- Possibly go to Cusco and couple of days early to acclimatise and make sure you read the dosage of the altitude medication properly. 

- Take aspirin as pain reliever in high altitudes because it thins the blood. 

- No need to take shampoo, conditioner or body wash as all the lodges and the ships provide it.

Always wanted to go to these places and it was our 40th anniversary! I am just so impressed with how much work you all put in to making these trips special. I was so used to doing it myself on line, etc. but now I won't. We could not have been happier! In Galapagos we loved everything about our ship the Santa Cruz and will recommend it to others!

Guayaquil is a good stop over place and the hotel we stayed at was nice...Oro Verde - but I don't think I would spend more than one night there. All of our hotels were excellent. I would suggest staying two nights at least in Quito because you need a rest day.

The meals on board the Santa Cruz, our Galapagos ship, were especially good. Everything was so fresh with healthy options.

The whole experience on the Santa Cruz was amazing. Dennis our naturalist was fabulous and the crew was so much fun and helpful. On the ship we were with a great group and enjoyed everyone.  

Transportation Review

Everyone was always on time - if not early. We are spoiled forever with boarding passes etc all done for us!

Aaron's planning was so good. All of my questions and concerns were answered so efficiently and in a timely manner. He did the best job. I have and will keep recommending him to others taking trips and will be back for our next adventure.

Just to make sure you have a few nights at least in the major cities so you are not always just flying in and out...we needed some "down" time but did find it nice on the Santa Cruz where all of our luggage was in one place for a while!

Providing an ecologically sound cruise definitely does not mean that we have to compromise on luxury! Go Galapagos - Kleintours is acutely aware of the fragility and importance of the Galapagos National Park in which we have been operating and doing things right since 1983. Some of our eco-friendly practices include that all toiletries provided in our cabins are biodegradable and made from natural components as well as all the cleaning products used during housekeeping. As a complimentary gift, guests will find a thermos in each cabin to be refilled at one of our vessel’s potable water stations, thus reducing the use of plastic bottles. Our vessels are equipped with sophisticated water treatment plants to desalinate, filter and purify water for consumable use. The decor of our vessels is acquired from sustainable-certified teak plantations and all our food supply is carefully planned to reduce kitchen waste. We aim to live the present and protect the future. While being pampered on one of our 5-star, boutique cruises, with true local flavor and personalized service, we want you still feel good about yourself in the comforting knowledge that our sustainable practices will preserve the integrity of the islands for generations to come.

Crew & Guides

Every crew member is trained to provide a first-class service with exceptional professionalism. Genuinely friendly individuals, fully dedicated to providing the best hospitality services, with attention to detail and personalized assistance, our crew’s passion and commitment creates a one of a kind experience for our guests. We fully understand how important your Galapagos experience is to you and as such, our team of naturalist guides has been carefully selected and trained to make it complete. Having been certified by the Galapagos National Park Service, our expert guides are ready to conduct informative walks covering every aspect of biology, geology, oceanography and human history relevant to the islands. Our group size ranges from an average of 12 to a maximum of 16 clients per guide. English or Spanish speaking groups are standard with many other languages available on previous request. Go Galapagos - Kleintours runs a series of specialist conferences, delivered by renown experts, aimed at the naturalist guides to further expand their knowledge in different fields such as geology, biology, photography, ornithology, and other related studies.

These two yachts are the intimate experience guest are looking for, with their respective capacity of 19 and 12, their cabins offer a sense of an intimate and private yacht experience. In small spaces, the service is more personalized and meeting fellow travelers are easy to share the experience of the trip. All social areas are designed with style and comfort, as well as the cabins that include excellent amenities. The external open deck areas have perfect spaces designed to socialize, relax and enjoy the best of the Pacific sun.

A Typical Cruise Day

A soothing morning wakeup call signals a freshly prepared al fresco breakfast on deck. Armed with snorkel gear, sunblock and camera we then board our pangas and head towards shore for our morning adventure. Every excursion is different, but might include a visit where we squeeze past boobies nesting on the narrow trail, sit and watch endemic waved albatross absorbed in their intricate courtship ritual, or stare into the eyes of a curious sea lion underwater as it peers into our face mask.

Returning aboard for a sumptuous, buffet-style, lunch we are able to enjoy time to relax in the pool, jacuzzi or on deck looking for wildlife and watching the scenery change as we cruise to our afternoon destination.

With every new visitor site being different from the last, we can once again expect another uniquely Galapagos experience for the afternoon hike. This could quite possibly be followed by another fabulous snorkel with turtles, large schools of yellow-tailed surgeonfish or even penguins! Some might choose to follow the dramatic shoreline in a kayak or effortlessly glide over the sea bed from the comfort of our motorized glass-bottom boat.

Return to the vessel to enjoy a delicious BBQ on deck as the sun sets on the horizon or, a sophisticated a la carte dinner. After dinner is a time to enjoy one of our many onboard activities, relax or be outside stargazing.

Hermes by Via Natura: The Epitome of Galapagos Cruising

The Galapagos Islands is a destination that should be at the top of any intrepid traveler’s bucket list. Home to a large number of species of flora and fauna – many of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world – the archipelago is indisputably a wonder of nature.

To make the most of what this paradisal location offers, you should explore these enchanted islands on a luxury Galapagos cruise. This is where Via Natura, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, comes in. The family-owned DMC and cruise operator crafts ultra-luxury experiences on the Hermes Mega Catamaran. This is the biggest commercial catamaran in the world and the first of its kind in the Galapagos.

The multihull superyacht is the culmination of months of research and analysis into luxury experiences; as such, no detail has been spared in designing the ultimate, once-in-a-lifetime cruise trip to the Galapagos Islands. Via Natura has created the perfect balance of comfort, space, intimacy and exclusivity.

The superyacht’s capacity is limited to just 20 passengers and has a 1-1 crew-to-guest ratio, ensuring above-and-beyond service for each guest. Think: two butlers ready to assist with every need, from unpacking and laundry services to booking massage appointments; a signature pillow menu; and in-room dining.

The suites on board (ten doubles, two singles) are nothing short of opulent. Ten 350-sq-ft suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows offering stunning vistas of the surroundings, walk-in closets, a mini bar and private balcony. What’s more, Via Natura’s Hermes Mega Catamaran is the only luxury vessel in the Galapagos with a private jacuzzi in each suite, overlooking the ocean for an intimate encounter with nature.

For solo travelers or odd-numbered groups, two 234-sq-ft suites are available for single use. Multiple suites can be interconnected for families, while the owner suite can extend to 700 sq ft.

Elsewhere, guests have myriad things to do and see while onboard. With a total of 7,296 sq ft of social areas across four decks, guests can enjoy facilities such as indoor and outdoor restaurants and bars, lounges, a spa, an observation deck, and a sun deck with an outdoor Jacuzzi. Guests also have access to VIP lounges at Galapagos airports and satellite internet onboard.

Hermes Mega Catamaran provides a world-class culinary experience paired with an all-inclusive wine and spirits menu curated by professional sommeliers and a famous Ecuadorian chef.

During the expedition, there will be one naturalist guide for every ten guests (the industry standard in the Galapagos being one to sixteen), who will share their well-informed knowledge about this endlessly fascinating corner of the world through hands-on exploration. There are many chances to explore the archipelago on the cruise through exhilarating hikes and snorkeling sessions.

Sustainability is at the heart of each Via Natura cruise expedition. There are many endemic Galapagos trees at risk of extinction due to invasive species.  Among them are the Scalescia, the Guayabillo and the Matazarno. Via Natura decided to launch a reforestation program on its own nine-hectare property in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island.
