That weight typically excludes water, gas, batteries, or additional accessories like rooftop tents and racks. Pay attention to the dry weight of the camper so you can determine if the build is within the payload of your vehicle.

The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is the maximum total weight the trailer can safely weigh. The GVWR includes the dry weight, also known as the curb weight, plus the weight of people, accessories, supplies, and all your outdoor gear.

The GVWR of these trailer picks ranges from 2,200 to 10,000 pounds. You’ll need the GVWR so that you can calculate how much equipment you can safely haul in the trailer on the road, as well as how many people can sleep inside.

Clearance & Tires

If you plan on driving through rugged terrain that would require 4WD, you should invest in a trailer with generous ground clearance and off-road tires , and consider an articulating hitch to prevent toppling over on uneven terrain. Sturdier tires can also provide better traction on slick roads with snow or rain.

When we take a close look at tires, the TigerMoth Overland is outfitted with the 225/75R16 ( Cooper Tires Discoverer AT3 LT ), offering a tread guard against rocks and gravel, extreme durability, and solid grip on wet roads or trails.

By comparison, the Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB has Goodyear Endurance ST225/75R15 Tires, which are great for towing stability and a high load capacity but are not ideal for rough terrain.

Sleep Space

At a minimum, our favorite compact travel trailers offer space for two people to sleep. A portion of these designs include cabins with a nonconvertible queen-size bed. Other trailer designs have options for a couch-to-bed conversion, like the TigerMoth Overland or Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 , or a structure that supports a rooftop tent.

The larger travel trailers on our list feature a range of comfortable overnight options. The designs range from daytime couches and fold-down Murphy beds to bunk beds to dinettes that transform into a bed. If you’re a taller or wider person, pay attention to the specific bed size.

For instance, the Winnebago Micro Minnie 2306BHS has a full queen-size mattress, whereas some trailers will have a narrower queen-size mattress. The Winnebago Micro Minnie 2306BHS also has a bunk bed that can fold up, so more space is available for storage when the bed isn’t needed.

Also, not all mattresses are created equal. The pad in the TigerMoth Overland is firm with no cushion or give. However, the Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 features a high-density memory foam mattress, and the Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB has a pillow-top memory foam mattress.

A handful of the tidiest travel trailers have indoor space that’s solely dedicated to a queen-size bed and cubbies. Other tight trailers have beds that convert into a daytime couch or even have a table that can be easily installed. We like that even when the couch is pulled down into a bed in the TigerMoth Overland , there’s still a space to pull our shoes on and off.

Many trailers include an awning, which becomes a gem when you consider how much more space everyone will have to lounge out of the sun and rain at camp. Larger travel trailers typically have indoor sofas and dining tables that often convert into a bed.

Pricier, larger travel trailers have indoor kitchens with a range of features. Inside, you’ll often find a microwave, refrigerator, freezer, oven, sink, two- or three-burner stove, cabinets, countertop space, and dining table.

More compact, less expensive travel trailers have outdoor kitchens, and there’s a variety of unique designs. A galley organizes the kitchen area on the back of the rig, like on the Timberleaf Classic Off-Road Teardrop Trailer .

Other designs have pull-out drawers or fold-down units with the pantry, stove, sink, or countertop like the Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 or the Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer .

The spacious travel trailers on our list have indoor bathrooms with a toilet and standup shower. Tinier travel trailers don’t have an indoor bathroom, but a handful have an outdoor shower head with warm water hookups like the Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 and Vorsheer XOC Extreme Overland Camper .

If your camper trailer doesn’t have an indoor bathroom and you’re posted up in a remote place, be sure to research that location’s human waste and Leave No Trace requirements — whether that means digging a cathole or using a WAG bag.

Interior Storage

Interior storage space is great for organizing apparel, cosmetics, electronics, and other comforts. Inside, travel trailers often feature storage space like shelves and cubbies, but not all offer a latch system to hold items in place while driving around.

There can also be storage space beneath the mattress. The Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer had an aluminum interior frame, which extended onto the doors, with numerous holes to clip carabiners, hang dish towels, or slide in hangers to dry gear like our dense wetsuits .

Larger travel trailers usually have ample storage space, including cubbies beneath sofas, cabinets in the bathroom and kitchen, and even hanging closets.

Exterior Storage

Outside, tidy travel trailers can also have a toolbox, tongue box, or racks for storing gear and equipment. Large travel trailers also often have storage compartments facing outward, which sometimes include pass-through storage space.

Doors & Windows

We really appreciate it when the doors and windows are built to last in a travel trailer. One of the most unique door configurations is on the Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer . There’s a back door that swings open and a second door that opens upward like the gullwing doors on the DMC DeLorean in “Back to the Future.” Nearly the entire wall serves as a sturdy canopy.

Windows are great for allowing ample light and can help a space feel bigger, but shades are equally important for privacy and to block out the light of the full moon or campground lamp. Slide-down shades can black out the inside of the trailer, and bug screens can enable airflow regardless of bug activity. It’s also nice to have windows that can be locked when they’re cracked.

Electric, Solar, Gas, and Water

You’ll need to closely consider how much energy and resources you’ll need between trips to a gas station, store, or an overnight stay with shore power.

Even if you don’t plan to charge your laptop or watch television — an option in larger travel trailers — it’s nice to have battery power. The battery can run indoor and outdoor LED lights around the kitchen and doors, as well as the roof exhaust fan — and it can charge up phones. Many travel trailers feature a prewired solar inlet to get an energy boost off solar panels, too.

Each trailer will have a specific capacity for gas and water carry. For instance, the Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 water tank boasts a 31-gallon capacity. The Vorsheer XOC Extreme Overland Camper has upgrade options for a 30-gallon water tank and bonus storage that holds two extra 5-gallon jerry cans. The Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer holds one 5-gallon jerry can.

In contrast, larger travel trailers have a greater water capacity, in great part to manage the bathroom. The Black Series HQ19 comes with a 50-gallon water tank for supply, a 26-gallon gray water tank for collection (for all used water except from the toilet), and a 26-gallon black water tank for all toilet waste.

Often trailers include an indoor smoke detector, fire extinguisher, and carbon monoxide detector.

How much weight can you tow?

Check your vehicle’s door jamb or owner’s manual for the payload, max towing, and tongue weight rating. Be sure not to exceed those caps with what’s hauled in the trailer and in the vehicle.

What camper trailer features allow off-road capability?

If you intend to off-road with your trailer, be sure to pick one with durable, all-terrain tires that can handle paved, gravel, dirt, and rocky surfaces. Look for a steel frame, ample clearance, axleless suspension, burly fenders, and articulating hitch.

How long do camper trailers last?

Most camper trailers will last between 10 and 15 years. However, numerous factors determine the lifespan of a camper trailer, and the most unpredictable is the human element. Outside elements that affect the lifespan of a camper trailer include the original design, build quality, usage, and storage when not traveling.

Assuming it is a quality-built trailer, is stored properly when not in service, and received regular maintenance, it’s normal to see camper trailers in use after 15 years from when it was bought brand new.

Pop-up trailerss are the most affordable RVs. They can be towed with any car, even a small SUV or electric vehicle with a towing hitch. Pop-up campers are compact, but expand to provide good living space and storage.

Hybrid Campers

Heavier than pop-up campers but lighter than 5th wheels, travel trailers are also called “bumper pulls.” They are the most popular type of towable RV, made with hundreds of floor plans and models ranging from simple to luxurious. Most travel trailer layouts work for part-time or full-time RVing.

Fifth Wheels

Fifth wheel trailers for full-time RVing are a popular option. They have lots of living space, high-end features and amenities such as large bathrooms, master bedrooms, kitchens, and storage. But fifth wheels are big, expensive, and require a 3/4-ton or 1-ton tow truck to pull them.

Top Seven Questions to Ask Before Buying a Family Travel Trailer

Now that you know the different types of travel trailers, it’s time to narrow down your options. The problem is that choosing the best family travel trailer RV for your tribe feels like a ton of work. And it can be! Just visit an RV show and you’ll find dozens of RV floor plans and styles. Some trailers are great, some not so great. But all require you to ask important questions, such as:

1. What type of family travel trailer works best for our camping needs?

Travel trailers are non-motorized RVs. They tend to be the most affordable campers because there is no motor, drive train, or complicated RV systems to factor in. Towable travel trailers break down into four types of RVs pulled with a tow vehicle. Each has different pros and cons of ownership depending on how your family will use it throughout the year. 

2. How will we use our family travel trailer?

Think about how you and your family want to use the trailer.

Some folks use their family travel trailer RVs for the weekend and don’t mind tight quarters. Others want lots of space and amenities for extended RV road trips. Camping is one of the best ways to spend time as a family. It allows everyone to spend time outdoors, disconnected from devices, and enjoy the simpler parts of life. It’s also extremely easy and affordable to do so. All you need is a tent, sleeping bags, and a few campground essentials. Many small families will start with a tent and soon realize that they’re ready to upgrade to a more permanent setup and look to purchase an RV. Most people new to RVing at this stage find that the RV selection process can be a little overwhelming. Well, have no fear. Below, we’ll cover everything you need to think about when choosing the best RV. We will focus the following criteria on finding a camper for a family of four (two kids and two parents).

Where to start when looking for an RV for a family of 4

When searching for an RV, it’s easy to get bogged down with all the available options, especially if you’re new to the RV lifestyle. However, to help narrow your list of options, the easiest place to start is to consider your camping style. We all have extravagant dreams of traveling throughout the country, stopping at national parks, and reliving the intentions of Clark Griswold in National Lampoons Vacation. While this may be the goal, it should not be the limiting factor in your used RV search. It is essential to think about how you will realistically use your RV 90% of the time, rather than the 10%.

There are a few types of camping styles that may align with you. To get you started, below are a few examples of them.

Local camper at nearby campgrounds:

Camping locally may not seem glamorous, but you will likely get more nights under your belt in the RV, making more memories with your family. There are a lot of perks to local camping. First, you will spend more time out of the car and relaxing. You will also get to know your local campground and plan your trips to take full advantage of the events, activities, and amenities it offers. You will make friends and meet families who do the same thing, building a little community for your camping lifestyle. Many RV parks also offer storage options, so you may be able to store your RV at the campground and pull it into your reserved site when needed. During times of high gas prices, this is a huge benefit. You will also be closer to home, allowing you to work and camp at night. This aspect is my favorite benefit of local camping.

Below are some things to keep in mind when camping locally. First, you will likely be spending more time in your RV. Camping locally means you will have less desire to explore the areas outside the campground. Finally, while a smaller RV may make more sense for a cross-country trip, the additional room in a larger RV with a spacious floorplan may create a more enjoyable experience for your family at your local campground.

Vacation Camper:

Maybe you want an RV to hit the open road for a road trip or take an annual vacation once or twice per year. When you start researching RVs, it is easy to fall in love with the large and roomy floorplans, bunk rooms, outdoor entertainment centers, etc. However, consider your needs to tow it around if you primarily plan to use it for a few extended trips. Also, if traveling to that exciting destination is part of the lure of RV camping, consider that you will visit the sites and places around the campground and may spend less time there. A smaller, nimble RV may be the right fit for you.

Another thing to remember about size is that some state and national parks limit RV length. You may have found that perfect 32-foot travel trailer, but when you go to book your stay at Acadia National Park, they may not be able to accommodate it. Therefore, reviewing the campgrounds in the places you plan to visit is a good idea before deciding on an RV. That may help you make an informed decision.

Full-Timer:

Okay, so you decided to abandon the masses and head out on the road to travel for an extended period. Finding the right RV for this situation may require you to make several compromises. You will want the space of a large RV, but you also will want to remain agile.

Will you be taking kids? Do you want to convert a dinette into a bed day in and day out? Will you be homeschooling or working remotely, and do you need a dedicated space for that? You will need to consider storage, cooking, sleeping, and on-and-off grid camping. This book will not guide you through all your decisions, but hopefully, it will give you some things to think about as you plan for this lifestyle change. Full-time RVing can be an experience of a lifetime.

Selecting an RV style

Once you have a general idea of your camping style, you can start thinking about the needs (not only wants) you have for your RV. Also, remember that most RVs can do just about anything you want in the camping world. Therefore, by choosing the best RV for the 90% of the time you will be using it, you will more than likely be able to use it for the 10%. 

A plan of action to lead you into the next section, searching for the RV, starts by focusing on a few key things: style, size, weight, tow vehicle, and floorplan. If you work through the planning process following this order, you will better understand what to look for in an RV. 

Motorized RVs:

If having an engine in your RV is a priority, this is your category. Motorized RVs come in different shapes and sizes, best described as Class. They are also your most expensive options, and if looking in the used market, you will have the added responsibility of inspecting the engine components. I do not want to discourage anyone from going this route, but be aware that you should do a lot of shopping around to find the right RV because your upfront investment is more substantial.

Towable RVs

The most common entry point into the RV lifestyle is through the towable RV door. It is true in the new RV market and the used market. Do not think of a towable RV as a lesser alternative to motorized RVs. They offer many benefits over motorized RVs at a much lower price point. With a towable RV, you can significantly increase your living space for only a fraction of the cost of what it would take to do so for a motorized RV. 

You also benefit from having a vehicle available to explore your surroundings near the campground. The towable market, because of its popularity, has countless options. Because of this, you will be able to find the perfect RV for your camping style. On one end of the spectrum, you have the option for a huge two-floor park model; on the other end, you can get a small teardrop camper that’s towable by a small SUV. There is a good reason why so many people camp with a towable. It is simply the best fit for the vast majority of campers.

For this article, we will focus on towable RVs since they are the most common types of RVs that first-time campers choose. They’re also very family-friendly and have many different floorplans to accommodate kids. The most common type of towable RV is a travel trailer. The next most common is a fifth wheel . Also, if you plan to carry large equipment, like ATVs, motorcycles, or golf carts, you may want to look at toy haulers.

Tow Vehicles

Your tow vehicle is one of the first things you should consider when purchasing an RV. Your tow vehicle will be the limiting factor for the RV you choose. It’s also the most important consideration for safety. An undersized vehicle will not only make towing your RV more difficult, but it will also create a dangerous situation for your family.

Choosing a tow vehicle is not an inconsequential decision you can punt down the road (no pun intended). It’s the cornerstone of determining what towable RV you can get. If you don’t decide first, the RV will choose for you (your RV does not care about your budget). Next, you will need to look at the trailer’s weight and size it up to the tow vehicle. Each trailer will have a dry weight (how much it weighs empty) and wet weight (maximum amount of cargo plus the dry weight).

If you already own a pickup truck or large SUV and don’t plan to upgrade, first look at the towing capacity of your vehicle. To find your vehicle’s ratings, you will need to do some homework.

What makes a good RV for a Family?

RVs come in different shapes and sizes with an endless array of floorplans to fit everyone’s needs. With so many options, It’s no wonder why it’s challenging to find the perfect one. However, certain features lend themselves well to camping families. So let’s take a look at some of them.

Sleeping options for kids

The first thing we’ll discuss is sleeping capacity and options. The perfect family RV will have a dedicated space for everyone. If you focus your RV choice on ensuring that every family member has a bed, you’ll be able to narrow down your RV types. The absolute best RV option for a small family of four is an RV with bunk beds . This setup provides a main bedroom for the parents and a separate bed for each kid. If you choose a different style RV, you’ll likely need to convert a sofa or dinette into a bed, which can be a huge inconvenience for a large family.

There are two main styles of bunk bed RVs. First, smaller RVs will have bunk beds integrated into the living area. This setup is a good option if you’re looking for a smaller and lighter RV. In addition, some bunk bed setups provide more privacy than others. The other better option (f you want a dedicated kid space)  is a bunk room, which provides a cordoned-off space for the bunk beds and is usually in the rear of the trailer. The benefit of a bunk room is that it separates all sleeping areas from the main living area. Bunk rooms are especially nice if you want to use the remainder of the RV while the kids are sleeping.

A notable feature that you’ll surely find when searching for an RV is slideouts. A slideout is a section of the room that extends out when camping but retracts when traveling. Some RVs will have upwards of five slides, but as the number increases, so does the weight of the RV. Many bunkroom models will offer a slide in the bunkroom, creating a larger space for the kids. Others will have a slide in the living room, master bedroom, or both. I recommend visiting an RV dealership to get a hands-on feel for the RV’s roominess.

Playspace or teen hangout

Regardless of the kid’s age, having a dedicated space for them to play or hang out is a huge benefit. Bunk rooms are an ideal option for this purpose. Bunk rooms provide plenty of room and storage space for toys and clothes. Many older children will also hook up their video game systems and use the bunk room as a gaming area. This extra space is a great way to keep the floor space in the rest of the RV uncluttered.

If an RV with a bunk room is not in your budget or size requirements, you can still achieve some of the above with a bunk bed area. Most bunk beds are tucked away in the RV and provide a little enclosed area for the kids. Younger children enjoy having this dedicated area. It’s a good idea to make this area kid-friendly and fun. My daughter decorates her bunk area and stores all her stuffed animals there. She loves to hang out there and watch a movie, and play. The best part of a bunk room is that kids can have their dedicated entertainment center while the parents can relax in the main living quarters.

Moden bunkhouses are often designed with this in mind. For example, many bunk areas will have separate storage compartments or shelves built-in, allowing kids to keep their items organized. Many will also have extra features like in-wall USB ports so kids can charge their tablets or phones.

Regardless of what style of bunk bed setup you choose, it’s smart to have a predetermined plan for where the kids will play and hang out. Keep this in mind when searching for RVs. When shopping for an RV, you will have many different floor plans with bunkhouses to choose from

Parent privacy

If you’re a parent, you know just how precious a little bit of privacy is. For your sanity, keep this in mind when RV shopping. The main bedroom will become very important to parents who need some space to unwind and find some quiet. A key feature you’ll want to look for in the main bedroom is a door that closes. Some RVs will have a main bedroom with a curtain that closes it off from the rest of the RV. While this is fine for many people, a sliding door or one on hinges is ideal. It helps seal noise from the rest of the family and provides you with your own space at night or if you want to relax and read a book.

RV main bedrooms usually offer a queen-size bed and are typically found in the front of the trailer. However, some larger RVs may provide a king-sized option. Since most RVs are standard widths, most King-sized bed options are typically only available in bedrooms with a slide. In addition, larger bedrooms typically provide additional storage, which is nice if you’ll be camping for longer periods. However, a queen bed is usually more than adequate for most camping trips .

Kitchen and dining

Another consideration you’ll have when RV shopping is the dining area. You typically have three main options to choose from: A traditional booth-style dinette, wraparound table, or free-standing dinette. All options are capable of accommodating a family of four. Deciding between these options is a matter of personal preference. However, depending on the RV model you’re looking at, you may not be given the option to choose. If given a choice, I prefer a free-standing table because I use it for work. It allows me to reposition the chairs and is a bit more comfortable. However, many people with large families prefer the large wraparound table since it provides more room for the entire family. The most traditional option is a booth-type dinette. This dining setup is nice since the booth typically folds into an extra bed, providing more sleeping space if you have friends or extended family members camping with you.

The kitchen is the other thing to keep in mind when selecting an RV. If you plan to do a lot of cooking in the RV, which is a great option for saving money, then make sure you choose an RV layout that meets your cooking style and has enough space. Also, don’t forget to look at the refrigerator. Some RVs have large residential-style refrigerators that provide plenty of space for your family’s food. Others will have smaller ones, and a very small RV may even have a dorm-sized fridge without a dedicated freezer. For most families, a moderate-sized refrigerator will easily accommodate a family of four.

The other important feature of a family RV is the bathroom . Keep in mind the whole family will be sharing this. Most campers will have a full-sized bathroom, but they may be tiny in a small camper. Some of the largest trailers may also offer a second half-bath with just a toilet and sink. When selecting an RV, pay extra attention to the bathroom and ensure it meets your family’s needs. A spacious bathroom is nice, especially when you have a lot of people sharing it. Some bathrooms will have free-standing showers, and others will have a mini tub and shower combo. The free-standing showers are usually found in larger full bathrooms. However, some parents may prefer the tub option for small children. In the smallest RVs, you may have a wet bath, which means that the shower, sink, and toilet are all in one area. However, this wouldn’t be very common if you’re looking for a family RV and are usually only found in a Class C motorhome or a teardrop trailer- not travel trailers and fifth wheels.

Nearly all trailer manufacturers will provide different models with options for camping families. Below are the best options for various RV sizes and types. Next, we’ll take a closer look at a variety of RVs for families. 

Best Small Travel Trailers

2023 jayco jay flight slx 7 184bs.

One of the most popular models of small RVs is the Jayco Jay Flight series. The 184BS offers a queen-sized bed, bunk beds, a well-equipped kitchen, and a bathroom with a tub/shower combo in a super small package that some larger SUVs can tow . It’s amazing how they managed to fit everything into this small space. So if you’re in the market for a small travel trailer that offers enough sleeping room for a family of four without needing to convert a sofa or dinette to a bed, then this is one of the best options on the market. The 2023 model features a super clean-looking white interior design.

While you lose some features typically found in a larger travel trailer, like an oven, and a larger bathroom, you more than make up for it with size and weight. New in 2023, Jayco added a roof-mounted A/C, which is an upgrade over the previous wall-mounted unit. Not many bunk bed RV models have as small a footprint as the Jayco 184BS. If you currently own a vehicle that can tow this, it’s an excellent choice for a travel trailer if you are not looking to upgrade your tow vehicle.

It’s hard to compare a small travel trailer like this to its larger-sized competition. However, there are some things you should be aware of if opting for a small camper this size. The living and sleeping areas are all within the same space, with the main bedroom only separated by a curtain. There is no privacy curtain or divider for the bunk area. Additionally, the only seating will be the dinette, so don’t expect to spend a lot of time in the RV with the entire family and not feel cramped. It’s a great option for families that need a small RV and plans to maximize their outdoor space while using the RV primarily for sleeping and eating.

However, one great option for a small camper trailer like this is to consider adding an RV awning room , which adds additional living space outside the entry door. Adding this accessory is one of the best things you can do to increase the space in your small RV. The Jayco features a 10-foot awning that will allow you to easily add this feature.

While the 184BS is small, that’s what makes it special. It’s one of the best small RV models available on the market. If you’re looking for a comparable RV, you may want to check out the Geo Pro 20BHS.

2023 Winnebago Micro Minnie 2100BH

If you’re looking for a small Bunk Bed RV with a little more room than the Jayco 184BS, the Winnebago Micro Minnie 2100BH is a great option. While the Winnebego is more expensive, this particular model is a good choice if you need a little more room. With the 2100BH, you get some extra room provided by the single slide for the dinette area combined with an excellent build quality. Also, while this model is a little heavier than the Jayco, you can still tow it with a capable SUV or pickup truck. In 2023, Winnebago gives you the option of swapping out the dinette for an EZ Glide Sofa Sleeper with a hidable table. I’m not the biggest fan of a dinette, so this change is a nice one to see.

Another great option about the 2100BH is the ability to customize it for your needs. For example, if you don’t want the dinette, you can swap this out for an EZ Glide Sofa Sleeper, which will provide a sitting area for the family to watch a movie on the included LED TV. Of course, the RV also has some pretty cool standard features, including a wireless phone charger, Wifi Prep, and heated and enclosed holding tanks (great for cold-weather camping and preventing your water tank from freezing) with the Comfort Tech Package.

While the 13.5 BTU  air conditioner should be more than enough to cool the camper, you can upgrade to a 15K BTU unit if you plan to camp frequently in a very hot climate. You can also upgrade to the Explorer Package, including a roof-mount solar power prep, larger off-road radial tires, propane heating system, heavy-duty axles, and suspension, among other upgrades.

Best Lightweight Travel Trailers (mid-sized)

Coachmen freedom express 292bhds.

If you’re searching for a new travel trailer that is lightweight and offers a bunk room, the Coachmen Freedom Express Travel Trailer 292BHDS is an excellent option. This lightweight trailer can be towed by some half-ton pickup trucks. The trailer also features a large slideout in the main living area, giving you more room for the family. Like most RVs this size, you get a full kitchen, full bathroom, and entertainment center. You’ll also enjoy the wraparound dinette, capable of comfortably seating the entire family. Parents will like the master suite sealed off by sliding doors. It features a queen size bed and plenty of storage for clothes.

The bunk room does not have a solid door but utilizes a curtain. The curtain may be one of the downsides of this model. However, the room does have three beds, which is great if your kids want to bring their best friend along for a camping trip. There is also a ton of shelving in the bunk room, which will help keep all of the kid’s toys and items neatly organized.

The 2100BH has a 19′ awning, plenty of cargo storage, and a full outdoor kitchen with a refrigerator and sink. The RV also has a heated and enclosed underbelly and large windows and is prepped for solar panels.   

2022 Keystone Outback 291UBH

While we’re still waiting on the specs for the 2023 mode, the 2022 Keystone Outback 291UBH could be one of the lightest moderately sized travel trailers, with premium features, on the market today. The 291UBH offers a unique design unlike any other travel trailer on the road. The trailer offers a rear bunk bed setup with larger bunks than the traditional twin style and a closable door. The bunkhouse area is perfect for small kids and provides plenty of room to make the space their own.

Innovative storage is a hallmark of this unit. There is a hidden pantry behind the entertainment center, which provides a large amount of storage for food and supplies. Most people won’t even realize it’s there until they open it and will be in awe of the amount of space. In addition, the unit has a single large slide in the living room, opening up the trailer for plenty of room for relaxing and entertaining.

The 291UBH offers a full kitchen inside and a refrigerator and stove outside. The bathroom has a roomy stand-up shower and plenty of room. The main bedroom offers a queen-sized bed with easy access to under-bed storage. This area also has a dog door and can serve as a kennel for small dogs.

The trailer also offers a lot of premium features. It’s prepped for solar, has power stabilizing jacks, a water docking station, on-demand Water Heater , solid steps, and a lighted power awning. The remarkable aspect of this trailer is that they deliver all of this with a GVW of 8,200 lbs, which is towable by most half-ton trucks.

Best Premium Travel Trailer

2023 rockwood 2911bs.

The Rockwood 291BS, built by Forest River (one of the leading RV manufacturers), is an absolutely beautiful bunkhouse travel trailer. The trailer offers two slides, one in the living room and the other in the main bedroom. There is also a separate bunkroom that sleeps 3 with a closable door. However, it all depends on what you’re looking for. 

If you have multiple young children accompanying you on your camping adventures, you may want to keep an eye on travel trailers that have bunkhouse floor plans . This allows you multiple bunk beds in a single floor plan, giving you plenty of space for everyone to sleep. 

However, if you are traveling with older children or people who want their own bedroom or dedicated sleeping area, you may want to keep an eye on floor plans that offer you this. You can find floor plans with multiple double or queen-size beds within, but it may take a little bit of extra searching. 

If you aren’t particularly worried about everyone having a dedicated bed throughout the day, you can definitely find a travel trailer with sleeper sofas, convertible dining areas, and other unique bed positions. Just make sure the entire family is comfortable with this decision before making your final purchase! 

Layout and Floor Plan

Speaking of sleeping arrangements, the layout or floor plan of your family travel trailer will make or break your camping experience. • Solar panels dependent on your utility usage 
• Larger holding tanks for your gray and black water tanks

This RV is designed to be towed by the majority of all half-ton trucks or vehicles, but make sure to check out the weight on this one to make sure it works well for you and your family.

Given just how many floor plans there are, you may feel overwhelmed about what decision is right for you at first. You can get the Puma with two bathrooms, with a spacious living area, multiple bunkhouse options, and more. Many options have chef kitchens as well as outdoor kitchens, for those of you who love to cook.

Starting at $43k, the Jay Feather by Jayco may not be the most budget-friendly travel trailer out there. However, it is going to give you the most bang for your buck, especially when you consider that there are 9 distinct floor plans across a variety of lengths and weights. Let’s check it out now!

One of the first things that many people notice about Jayco travel trailers is the fact that they have a unique and lovely interior design. In fact, Jayco crafts the majority of their cabinetry and furniture in house, creating a warm and welcoming space that is unique to this particular RV brand and manufacturer.

When it comes to finding a floor plan that works well for your family, the Jay Feather offers you multiple different bunkhouse floor plan options, including double bunk beds stacked on top of each other. You can also find floor plans with a bunkhouse bedroom, complete with a sofa and entertainment system for the kiddos. 

The interior kitchen areas of this travel trailer are spacious and welcoming, but if there isn’t enough space to cook indoors on this rig, many floor plans come equipped with an outdoor kitchen as well. You also have customizable living spaces, giving you the option to add theater seating or convertible couches for more sleeping space.

In terms of amenities in special features, there isn’t too much included at this standard purchase price. However, you have the option to upgrade your electric panel to a 50 amp service rather than a 30 amp service, as well as prep for an additional air conditioning unit should you need one.

There are always less-expensive options out there, but this is a fantastic and reliable one from Jayco!  

Lightest Weight: Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite

• Plenty of storage throughout, especially in bedrooms
• Fairly basic interior design 

When I first began my RVing journey living full-time in my travel trailer, I was always stressed about how much my RV weighed. If you are also nervous about towing something too heavy for your tow vehicle, check out the Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite. All of the floor plans for this particular RV are under 6500 pounds . Let’s talk about them in more detail now! 

Ranging in length from 25 ft to 35 ft, the Apex is ideal for those of you helping to bring along the entire family. There are a number of floor plans with multiple bunk beds, including ones with double bunk bed sizes for the older kiddos in your life. What else is special about this floor plan? Let’s take a closer look.

One of the main things you will notice about the Apex floor plans is the fact that there is storage everywhere. There are walk around queen size beds for adults, complete with under-bed storage. There’s plenty of space in the galley kitchen as well as huge exterior storage compartments. 

You can get a floor plan that has two separate living areas, one for the adults and one for the kids. You can also get Theater seating, a larger refrigerator upgrade, and floor plans that give you spacious bathrooms so that more than one person at a time can get ready in the morning. 

You can choose from a few different interior design options on this particular travel trailer, though the design is fairly simplistic overall. However, it is easy to clean and maintain, especially if you plan on bringing a few too many kids along on your camping adventures! 

You even get a small amount of solar panel power included standard on this particular RV!

For the price, the Apex is a great choice for those of you worried about towing something too heavy for your vehicle. Just bring your own interior design features so that you can get it looking the way you want, but this is a great choice for a number of people just starting off with a travel trailer.

While there are only five floor plans to check out on this particular travel trailer, each one is fantastic for families of all sizes. One floor plan only sleeps two to four people, but there are multiple that sleep 5 to 6, and even some floor plans that sleep 8 to 10 in case you have a large group that you want to bring along with you.

You can get the Astoria in multiple lengths, from 26 feet to 36 feet, and it remains easy to drive and tow. Plus, you have a heated and enclosed underbelly on board this rig, which means you can camp in it year-round if that is something you are interested in doing. 

Stepping on board the Astoria, you will notice that the interior design is light and modern. You can choose from a few different fabrics and countertop materials, though everything is contemporary and easy to clean. There’s a bit more personality in this travel trailer compared to other options on this list so far, so this is definitely a plus. 

There are walk around King beds on multiple floor plans, bunk bedrooms, beautiful kitchen and living areas, and much more. You can get electric fireplaces on certain floor plans as well as Theater seating, and everyone should feel as if they have their own space to relax and unwind.

At this particular price point, you may be expecting multiple features to be included in the initial purchase price. However, the features on this RV are fairly standard, with the option to add a 50 amp service and an additional air conditioning unit, not included in the initial price. 

While you might be expecting a few more options, the Astoria is priced fairly high for what you get. However, there’s plenty of space for everyone, and it is furnished beautifully! 

Best with Two Bathrooms: KZ RV Connect

• Beautiful interior design is easy to maintain

KZ RV creates a few fantastic options when it comes to travel trailers, and the Connect is no exception. This particular RV has a fair price point and 11 different floor plans, though only one of them offers you two distinct bathrooms. Let’s talk more about this RV in general, especially the floor plan with more flexibility for your family! 

Depending on the floor plan, you can sleep anywhere from 3 to 9 people on board the Connect, with the double bathroom floor plans sleeping up to 9 individuals.The two bathroom floor plan is just about 37 feet in length, and it offers you a distinct living area for the kiddos that is separated from everything else. 

You have multiple bunk beds and dining areas on board this RV, with the option to enclose a separate bedroom area across the rig from the master bedroom. Speaking of the master bedroom, you have a walk around king size bed on some options, including the floor plan that has two bathrooms. 

There are a number of features included standard for this particular travel trailer, including an outdoor kitchen and beautiful modern interior design. In terms of other features that are included standard, you have a full size oven and range combo in the kitchen, more insulation so that you can camp in more seasons, and you also have the option to add an entire off-grid solar package.

The interior design for this RV is beautiful and modern, with undermount stainless steel sinks and backsplash in the kitchen and bathroom. This should keep you comfortable and feeling at home for the duration of your camping experience, especially if the whole family comes along with you!

In addition, you can upgrade to a king size bed or add washers and dryers, as well as larger refrigerators if you plan on camping for an extended period of time. While not all floor plans on the Flying Cloud suit all families, it does offer roughly eight different options for you to choose from. The reason not all floor plans will work for large families it’s the fact that this RV starts at 23 feet in length. The longest option available from Airstream for this particular model is 30 feet in length, so you may still feel a little cramped if you plan on camping with a large group.

Despite this compact frame, you can sleep anywhere from four to eight people depending on the floor plan, with an available bunk floor plan sleeping 8 individuals. The best part of this RV has to be the interior design and special touches found throughout. But what are some of those features? Let’s check them out now. 

You have Airstream’s signature aluminum found throughout the interior of this RV, as well as plenty of additional features to help you enjoy the inside of your RV. For example, Airstream uses ultra-leather that doesn’t fade, crack, or experience wear over a long period of time, giving you an RV with exceptional resale value.

The Northern Spirit has 9 available floor plans, all of which are complete with pet-friendly features. You have an exterior hook to keep your dog latched up while you unload the car, as well as a dedicated bowl area that is in a drawer, perfect for storing while on the road. 

This particular travel trailer ranges in length, from 24 feet to 37 feet. The larger you go, the more it weighs, as the longest Northern Spirit option weighs over 8,000 pounds. This is important to note, especially if your tow vehicle can’t handle something of this size.

Starting at $38k, the Mesa Ridge S-Lite is a great choice for those of you who want to camp all year round. Not only is it budget-friendly and packed with features, but this option from Highland Ridge RV also gives you a lightweight travel trailer to start with, as all models range in weight from 4,000-6,000 pounds. Let’s check it out!

With 7 floor plans that sleep anywhere from 4 to 10 people, you have plenty of things to choose from with the Mesa Ridge. There are bunk bed floor plans as well as options that give you king-size beds, which should mean that there’s plenty of space for the entire family. 

In terms of storage there’s plenty both inside and out, including motion-activated LED lit exterior storage. You also get many different options for making this RV your own, including two different solar packages and upgraded furniture in the interior of the RV. Keep in mind that this isn’t included in the budget friendly purchase price, but you can truly make this RV your own if you have the budget for it.

In terms of camping year-round, this RV has a walkable roof and a heated underbelly so that you can maintain your travel trailer no matter the weather . Having a heated underbelly and holding tanks means that you don’t have to worry about it getting too cold and freezing your water lines, something that plagues many RVers throughout the years. 

You may have already guessed this, but to keep this RV budget-friendly as well as easy to maintain, the Mesa Ridge is fairly lacking in terms of its interior design. While it’s a fairly standard RV with black and gray finishes, you likely won’t be spending too much time inside after all! 

Best for Boondocking: Forest River Ibex

Speaking of an RV that is built for year-round camping, you could also say the same about the Forest River Ibex. This RV has a slightly higher initial purchase price compared to other options on this list, but it offers its customers everything you can need, especially if you plan on boondocking or camping anywhere in inclement weather. Let’s take a look at this RV in more detail now! 

One of the coolest things to point out about the Ibex is the fact that it offers seven different floor plans, with some variation in the width of the RV. For example, a couple of options are seven and a half feet wide, while other options are 8 feet wide. While this may not seem like a huge difference, having that extra space across makes the interior feel much more spacious. 

Not only is the Ibex lightweight and towable by a number of different cars and trucks, but it also has cold weather features included as standard. You also get a certain amount of solar panels also included, and large residential refrigerators standard as well. But this isn’t even the end of our list of features that are included without you having to pay anything extra.

The Ibex is made for boondocking, and this includes getting off the beaten path. All Ibex floor plans have a raised chassis that allows you to hit the road, no matter what condition the road is in. Plus, you even get all terrain tires included on this initial purchase price, something that very few other RVs can say. 

If you have a particularly adventurous family, two of the available floor plans on the Ibex have toy hauler ramp doors at the rear of the RV . This gives you the option to wheel out any ATVs, kayaks, and more without stress. However, these floor plan options may not sleep the number of people that you need them to sleep. 

Best Bunkhouse Option: Keystone Cougar Half-Ton

One of the most popular RV options on the market today has to be the Keystone Cougar Half-Ton. This RV is towable by most trucks and SUVs, offering lightweight floor plans and multiple options at a luxurious price point. Let’s check out what makes this travel trailer special now, especially for families. 

Ranging in length from 25 feet to 37 feet, all Cougar models are under 9,000 pounds. Some floor plan options even give you the ability to sleep a dozen people inside, which means that nobody needs to be left behind. This is largely due to the fact that there are multiple bunkhouse options on board the Cougar, which is ideal for families. 

One important thing to note about the Cougar is its wide range of prices and 23 available floor plans. You can get a floor plan that starts at $51k, or one that starts at $70k- it all depends on your needs! However, the larger the rig, the more expensive it is, with some of the bunkhouse floor plans costing more than others. 

With all of this in mind, the Cougar is special for a number of reasons. There are multiple bunk beds in designated sleeping rooms, giving you privacy and a bit more peace and quiet should you choose to camp with a bunch of kids. Plus, the kitchen and bathrooms are all well appointed and easy to maintain.

Despite this wide range of prices, you have a number of features included standard, including basic solar abilities . You also have a few different interior design options, depending on your own particular style. The kitchen in particular is beautiful, complete with a residential size fridge in the kitchen that fits food for the entire family. 

However, the price point on this particular option may be too high, and you may find that this rig is still too heavy for your vehicle to tow. However, if you are looking for a travel trailer that is a great investment and has space for up to a dozen people, you should definitely check out the Cougar. 

Runner-Up: Forest River Rockwood

Forest River has a number of travel trailers and its current roster, but the Rockwood has a lot to offer the average family. It’s our runner-up for the best overall choice, and let’s take a look at why this is true. 

One of the main reasons you might choose the Rockwood is for its elegant interior design and electric fireplaces. There are only a few bunk beds available on this particular travel trailer, but with convertible couches and dining areas, you can still sleep the whole family. 

One of the main reasons that the Rockwood didn’t take our top overall spot is the fact that it is very heavy. Some of the makes and models of this particular RV reach nearly ten thousand pounds, which is not ideal for the average tow vehicle. However, if you have the capacity, this RV truly has a lot to offer.

One of the things that this RV can offer the average consumer is convenience. the Rockwood has auto-leveling involved in its standard purchase price, as well as a number of other storage solutions to help you feel at ease while camping. Plus, the kitchens and bathrooms are stunning, no matter what furnishings you choose. 

With the option to add a washer and dryer, an elegant kitchen island, and so much more, the Rockwood feels more like home than an RV. But there’s a catch if you want this trailer to sleep four, as you have to option the trailer without a bathroom.

This is because the front of the 13-Foot Scamp Trailer can either be optioned with a convertible sofa that converts into bunk beds or a wet bath. 

But if you choose the wet bath, the only place to sleep in this small camper is the convertible dinette booth that can only sleep two.

If you can camp without a bathroom though, you won’t find a smaller or lighter travel trailer that can actually sleep four campers at a time.

An interesting article. Prices would have been a realistic addition to the article. Not everyone can afford a 22,000 lb. diesel Class A or huge trailer. Also, your realistic recommendations for the optimal class of truck regarding weight range, i.e. 250/350/450, etc. This would be helpful, especially if you’re trying to entice first time owners.

Safety always being the first element of concern. Everywhere one goes, one always sees an F250 with a 4,000+ lb. camper or a “half ton” towing a thirty plus foot trailer, with the rear down and the front up. They get away with it, for a while, but it’s not very safe and will shorten the vehicle’s life and be a scary situation in an emergency. An overloaded vehicle is no fun to drive.

This slide creates tons of space in the bunkhouse for kids of any age to play and spend time in their room. Additional space is located in the loft above the bunkhouse, making a perfect hangout spot or gaming area for kids.

How to Create RV Workspaces and Family Entertainment Areas in a Travel Trailer

Creating RV workspaces and entertainment spaces while living in a travel trailer can be tricky. You have to balance the need for fun with the need to get stuff done, and in some instances, both things must share a single space. Fortunately, we have been living in a trailer long enough to have some good tips and tricks to help you out. 

Staying Connected

First and foremost, you will need to figure out how to stay connected to the internet while on the road. This is important for both entertainment and functional RV workspaces. Therefore, it is crucial that you solve this puzzle before worrying too much about where you will work or play in your RV. 

There are a few ways you can go about staying connected while RVing.

Satellite internet.

Our main internet source right now is Starlink . This is an amazing option that has been a game-changer for us. Starlink gives you internet access pretty much wherever you roam, as long as you aren’t under a bunch of trees. The biggest issue we have with this option is that it can be a pain to set up and take down each time we move. 

Mobile Hotspot

For years prior to getting Starlink, we primarily used a mobile hotspot for our RV internet. Ours was through Verizon, but we know many people who use AT&T. We also know many who have a whole collection of hotspots. This is nice because it ensures they have decent service no matter where in the country they happen to be. If you decide to go this route, I highly recommend a Wi-Fi booster. 

RV Park Wi-Fi

Lastly, there is the option of using RV park Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, while this option tends to be totally free, it is also the least reliable. Generally, RV park Wi-Fi is good enough to check email, but not much else unless you’re willing to head to the activity center. For this reason, we only recommend going this route if a reliable internet connection is not required for your work. 

More Internet Tips

Another thing you’ll need to think about? Where in your RV workspaces and entertainment spaces to put your TVs and computer monitors? You can’t very well leave these things sitting on a desk or entertainment center, as they will fall during travel. This means you’ll likely want to mount them.

Finding the Perfect Sound

Whether you want to watch a movie with some epic sound or have a good way to communicate during Zoom meetings, sound is something that will need to be considered when setting up your RV entertainment and work spaces.

This video offers instructions on upgrading your RV entertainment sound system. 

For work, we recommend getting your hands on a set of good headphones and a quality microphone. This will help block out household sounds in your tiny space and make your voice as clear as possible for online meetings. 

Media Storage Ideas

Wondering how to store things like books, games, movies, and paperwork? Honestly, I recommend obtaining or creating digital versions of all of these things and foregoing the physical versions altogether. 

That said, if you must keep things like physical DVDs and game discs, consider getting a binder to keep them in.

As far as physical books go, keep a small cabinet or mount a shelf for them. Only keep what fits in the cabinet or shelf. You can rotate them out by visiting thrift stores and used book stores on a regular basis. This will ensure you always have something new to read without spending a fortune or using up all of your storage space. 

Important paperwork should be scanned and stored in the cloud and onto a thumb drive. Once this is done, store physical copies in a fireproof safe. Less important paperwork can be kept in a file box under a desk or in a cabinet. 

Clever RV Workspaces

Now that you know how to mount a monitor, how to set up your sound system, and where to store your media, let’s talk about RV workspaces. Below are some of the best RV workspace ideas we’ve ever come across in our travels. 

Bryanna Royal of Crazy Family Adventure used the master bedroom as her office. She would sit on the edge of the bed and use the keyboard on the chest of drawers. Her laptop served as a monitor. We like that because she used her laptop as a monitor, she could also take her work on the go.

Dresser Desk

My friend, Doug Setzer of Learn to RV used the dresser in his RV bedroom as a base for a work desk. He added extensions that could be folded out when being used or tucked out of the way when they weren’t needed. I love that he left the drawers usable so clothes or office supplies could be stored in them.

Standing Desk

A standing desk is another great option. Jonathan Longnecker of Tiny Shiny Home used a small, lightweight standing desk that can be folded when not in use. A wall-mounted TV served as a monitor and could be used for entertainment purposes when the workday was done.

Fold Out Desk

Another friend of mine, Ashley Logsdon of 90 Day Family Road Trip , created a folding desk from a cabinet door. The door would fold down and across the bed for work and back up again when not in use. It could be used as a standing desk or with a folding chair.

Bunkhouse RV Workspace

The mid-bunk room was what worked well for Charlotte Brewer of Brewing Adventure . She used a small folding table in front of the dresser to hold her keyboard and placed her monitor on top of the dresser. They could more the table out of the way and use the monitor for entertainment purposes after work.

Toy Hauler RV Workspace

We’ve seen families make use of the garage of their toy hauler RVs by converting them into offices. If you’re lucky enough to have a toy hauler, this is a solution that might work well for you. It worked well for Kimberlie Floyd of Kimventure !

Bathroom RV Workspace

Finally, and quite possibly best of all, there is the bathroom office created by my traveling comrade, Jessica Alexander. I’m not gonna lie, I laughed hard when I heard she worked out of her bathroom, but they had two bathrooms in their rig, and using the extra bathroom gave her the ability to put between herself and her kids, so I guess it’s actually pretty clever.
