  • Why Meydan Free Zone

The UAE recently implemented significant changes to its entry and residency visa policies as part of reforms that took effect in October 2022. These reforms have streamlined procedures, expanded the long-term Golden Visa scheme, and introduced a new five-year residency visa called Green Visas . In addition, there have been increases in visa service fees and longer grace periods for leaving the country after visa expiration.

Validity of Freezone Visas Modified:

The validity of free zone visas in the UAE has been reduced from three to two years, with the change taking effect in October 2022 as part of the UAE visa reforms. The move standardizes the validity of work visas, which were previously three years for free zones and two years for the mainland.

Visa Fees Increase:

The fees for availing all services offered by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) have increased by AED100. This includes the additional smart services fee for Emirates ID and residency visas.

Emirates ID Replaces Visa Stamps on Passports:

The UAE has discontinued the practice of stamping residency visas on passports. Instead, residents will use their Emirates ID as their official residency document.

Visa On-arrival Policies Have Changed:

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has a favorable visa policy for travelers from different countries. Citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are exempt from obtaining a visa or permit to enter the UAE. They only need to produce their GCC country passport or national ID card upon arrival. Other nationalities may be eligible for a 30-day visa on arrival, which can be obtained without prior visa arrangements. There are also some countries that are eligible for a 90-day visa on arrival. Indian citizens holding a normal passport and either a visit visa issued by the USA, a green card issued by the USA, a residence visa issued by the UK, or a residence visa issued by the EU are eligible for a 14-day visa on arrival, given that the visas or green card is valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival into the UAE. It’s important to note that passports must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into the UAE and the list of countries eligible for visa on arrival may change, so it’s advisable to check with the UAE embassy in your country before traveling to the UAE.

New Visa-free Destinations:

The Emirati passport provides its holders with visa-free entry to 112 countries, granting access to more than 50% of the world without a visa requirement. The passport also grants visa-free entry to the Schengen area, which includes many European territories. Some of the countries that Emiratis can visit without a visa include France, Germany, Greece, Italy, and Spain, among others. The duration of stay without a visa varies from country to country and ranges from 15 to 180 days. This visa-free travel is a significant perk of holding an Emirati passport and makes travel easier and more convenient for its holders.

Smart Ways to Apply for a Visa:

The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai has introduced a new video conferencing service to complete residency visa applications. The service was launched on January 11, 2023 and allows applicants to submit documents and complete the application process digitally. Customers can follow up on their transactions through video calls and send any required documents through a chat box. The aim of the service is to achieve a “zero visit” goal, but in rare cases, if an application cannot be completed, an officer will send a link to schedule an appointment to visit the administration in person. This new service is a step forward in providing smart government services and making it easier for entrepreneurs to start their businesses in Dubai. The option to visit a service center in person is still available to those who prefer it.

The UAE government implemented a sophisticated visa system in October 2022, leading to several alterations to visa policies, and these recent reforms are part of the major residency and entry permit reforms implemented by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP). The cost of all UAE and Dubai visas, including 30-day and 60-day tourist visas, has risen by AED 100. The ICA’s one-month visit visa fee, for instance, has increased from AED 270 to AED 370.

The UAE has made significant revisions to the Golden Residence Scheme and expanded the categories of the Golden Visa to simplify the eligibility criteria and include more beneficiaries. The UAE Golden Visa is now valid for a 10-year period for all categories, providing the holder with the right to reside and work in the Emirate for a decade.

Investors, entrepreneurs, exceptional talents, scientists, outstanding students and graduates, and skilled workers are eligible for the 10-year Golden Residence. The new rules also permit Golden Residence holders to sponsor their family members, including spouses and children, of any age, as well as unlimited support services labourers.

The grace period for expats after a residence visa expiration or cancellation in the UAE has been extended from 30 days to 6 months for Golden Visa holders and their family members. Expats now have a 6-month window to either renew their status or leave the country without incurring fines. However, if the Golden Visa holder fails to renew or cancel their dependents’ visas, they may be subject to overstay fines.

The UAE recently launched an online eligibility quiz for aspiring applicants seeking the Golden Visa. The visa is now available to scientists, researchers, skilled professionals, exceptional talents, and real estate investors.

The UAE Green Visa has undergone significant improvements aimed at attracting talents, experts, freelancers, investors, and entrepreneurs with a new 5-year residency option. The residency requirements have been simplified and made more flexible, and additional benefits include longer grace periods of up to 6 months after the residency permit has ended to facilitate family members’ stays.

Skilled Workers The Green residency for skilled employees has been updated, offering a 5-year residency period for skilled workers without a sponsor or employer. To be eligible, applicants must have:

  • A valid employment contract
  • Classification in the first, second, or third occupational level, as determined by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation
  • A minimum educational level of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • A salary of at least AED 15,000.

Please note that third-level skilled professionals, as classified by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, are eligible for a 90-day extended grace period after the expiration of their Green residency.

Freelancers and Self-Employed Individuals The new Green Residence for freelancers and self-employed individuals offers a 5-year residency in the UAE without needing a sponsor or employer. The following criteria must be met:

  • Obtainment of a freelance/self-employment permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation
  • Possessing a bachelor’s degree or specialised diploma
  • Having an annual self-employment income over the past two years of AED 360,000 or the ability to demonstrate financial stability during the stay in the country.

Investors and Partners The Green Residence for investors and partners is designed to encourage investment in the UAE and offers a 5-year residency for those involved in commercial activities. The following requirements must be met:

  • Approval of the investment and proof of investment
  • Calculation of total invested capital for investors with multiple licenses
  • Mandatory approval from competent local authorities.

Children of Emirati Mothers The UAE has recently extended the validity of residency visas for the children of Emirati mothers and foreign fathers, from three years to five years. This move is seen as a positive and progressive step towards granting these children the same rights as other citizens in terms of healthcare and education.

UAE Residency Re-entry Permit

Residents of the UAE who have been staying outside the country for more than six months can now return by applying for a re-entry permit, according to travel and typing centre agents in Dubai. The re-entry permit will allow UAE residents who have been away for over six months to return to the Emirate within 30 days of permit approval.

With the re-entry permit, residents can now remain outside of the UAE for more than 6 months without having their residency cancelled. However, to be eligible to apply for the permit, residents must provide a reason for their extended absence and provide proof of the same. The re-entry permit can be applied for through the official website of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP).

Benefits for Family Members

The United Arab Emirates has recently introduced new benefits for family members of Golden Visa holders. The holders can now sponsor their parents for a 10-year residency, compared to the previous one-year stay. They are also exempt from paying the deposit required to sponsor parents and only need to provide a certification from their consulate as the sole caregiver. In addition, Golden Visa holders can sponsor residency for their first-degree relatives, including their spouses and children, for a five-year stay.

The grace period for Green visa holders and their family members to exit the UAE after a residency visa cancellation has been extended to 6 months, with no fines during this time. However, if the green visa holder fails to renew or cancel the visa of their dependents, they may face overstay fines. The Green Residence holder can bring their first-degree relatives, with their residency matching the same duration as the original holder.

The UAE has recently introduced ten new types of entry visas that do not require a sponsor or host, aimed at simplifying the entry requirements for visitors to the country for different purposes. These new visas offer flexible durations and are available for single or multiple entries, valid for 60 days from the date of issuance.

  • The Job Exploration Visa is aimed at attracting young talents and skilled professionals to explore job opportunities in the UAE and do not require a sponsor or host.
  • The Business Entry Visa is for investors and entrepreneurs to explore business and investment opportunities with easy entry processes.
  • The Multi-entry Tourist Visa has been introduced for all nationalities and allows tourists to enter the UAE multiple times on self-sponsorship, with a stay of 90 days on each visit that can be extended by another 90 days. The only requirement is proof of having a bank balance of AED 14,700.
  • The Family Visa rule has also been changed to allow male children under 25 and disabled children to be sponsored by their parents, and unmarried females can be sponsored indefinitely.
  • The entry permit for visiting friends and relatives, a temporary work mission, and study and training have also been introduced, with specific requirements for each.
  • A residence permit may also be issued for humanitarian cases, such as the female resident whose husband passed away in the country and has one child or more or the parents or children of a UAE citizen who holds foreign passports.

UAE Entry Permit Extension

According to reports, some UAE entry permits may be extended for up to 90 days based on the purpose of the visit and other factors. The applicant’s passport must have a minimum validity of 6 months, and tourist entry permit applications must be submitted by the relevant tourism company.

An entry permit extension can be granted within 48 hours for eligible applicants who meet all requirements and conditions. The extension can be requested online through the website or mobile app of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICA) by following these steps:

  • Register and create an account on the ICP smart service system
  • Apply and pay the required fees

A 30-day extension, which can be issued twice, costs AED 610. For GCC residents, a 30-day extension application costs AED 260 and must be accompanied by a passport copy.

In three specific cases, the extension may exceed a month:

  • Healthcare entry permits – may be extended up to 90 days for AED 510.
  • Entry permits for those accompanying GCC citizens – may be extended up to 60 days for AED 260.
  • Study permits – may be extended up to 90 days for AED 610.

The stay period for visit entry permits will be determined based on the visitor’s purpose of visit and at the discretion of the authority, but it must not exceed one year. The head of the authority may also extend the visit entry permit if there is a valid reason for the request and all fees have been paid.

Visa

The UAE Immigration department has ended the practice of extending visit visas without leaving the country. Those seeking to extend their visit visas must now depart the UAE and reapply.

The prior relaxation of visit visa extension rules due to the COVID-19 pandemic has been withdrawn, and procedures have returned to pre-pandemic norms. At present, there has been no official confirmation from the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) regarding the new visa extension rule; however, reports indicate that visa extension applications submitted within the country are being denied.

Visit Visa Overstay Rules 2023

Foreign nationals who have exceeded their visa validity in the UAE cannot depart the country without obtaining an outpass or exit permit first. The outpass for Dubai/UAE can be acquired at the airport immigration offices or land borders and may also be obtained at the Al Awir Immigration office for a reported cost of AED 200 to 300.

Visitors who overstay their visas will be required to pay full fines, which amount to AED 50 per day of overstay. UAE visit visa holders will be granted a grace period of 10 days from the date their visa expires, after which the overstay fines will start to accrue. It is important to note that the overstay fines will not be imposed on visitors who are unable to leave the country due to airport closures or flight cancellations.

Since the introduction of the advanced visa system, which came into effect in October 2022 by the UAE government, several changes have been made to the visa rules.

These recent reforms are among the UAE's major residency and entry permit reforms introduced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP).

The new system has led to major changes in the  uae visit visa rules  system and introduced new UAE visa rules. In this guide, we will enlist all changes which have taken place since October 2022 to the latest increase in fees to issue Emirates ID, visit, and residency visas in the UAE.

Table of Contents

In its latest announcement, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) hiked the price of all services by AED 100. According to the new rules, the increase is applied to all services rendered byICP, such as issuing Emirates IDs, visit visas, and residence visas.

After getting the visa, you can enter UAE multiple times on self-sponsorship. The visa allows you to stay for 90 days whenever you enter the country. After the visa expires and you want to stay more days, you can extend the visa for 90 days. It is the ideal visa for people with a loved one living in UAE because you get enough time to spend with loved ones.

When applying for this 5-year multiple entry visa ,  some of the documents required include a bank statement covering the previous six months with a balance of $4,000 or its equivalent in foreign currencies, proof of UAE health insurance, a copy of the applicant's flight ticket, and proof of residence in the form of an invitation letter from friends or family members residing in the UAE.

Dubai Exit or Leave Permit

When you stay more than the days allowed by your UAE visa, you will be considered overstaying.

If you are exiting UAE via Dubai you must apply for an exit or leave permit to fly out of the country.

Please note that the exit permit is only required when exiting UAE through Dubai. The other Emirates don't require you have an exit pass when flying out.

You can get the Dubai exit permit at the immigration counter in the airport or land borders. You can also get the leave permit through the Al Awir Immigration office. The cost of this exit permit is approximately 200 AED to 300 AED.

If you stay longer than the duration permitted by your UAE visa you are overstaying your UAE visa and you will be charged with overstaying fines. The UAE ICP recently announced the standardization of all overstaying fines to 50 AED per day of overstaying.

The overstaying fines add up after your grace period(depending on the visa you hold) has been used up. Please note that you won't be considered overstaying if you can't exit the country because of flight cancellations or airport closures.

On October 3rd, 2022, the ICP introduced the  60 days visit visa  after implementing the new reforms. The visa allows holidaymakers to stay more days in UAE for up to 2 months.

UAE Entry Permit to Visit Relatives or Friend

If you have a relative or friend who is a UAE citizen or resident, you qualify to apply for the UAE entry permit to visit a friend or relative. You don't need to go through a travel agency or have a sponsor to be eligible to apply for the permit.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government discontinued stamping resident visas into passports in preference of issuing Emirates ID cards. As a result, it will no longer be necessary to collect passports before stamping them, and citizens of the UAE will now be able to submit a single application to obtain their Emirates ID and residency visa. This change will simplify the application process and reduce the time required.

The UAE Immigration departments in all Emirates have discontinued extending visiting visas without having to exit the country. Instead, the visit visa holders are required to exit the country, apply for an extension, and, once approved, enter the country again.

The option to extend your visa in UAE is Airport to airport services, where you book a flight through a travel agency like Arabiers to the nearest Middle East country like Oman and wait a few hours at the airport for the visa extension application to be processed. After the extension is approved, you enter with the new visa and book a flight back to UAE.

The United Arab Emirates has recently broadened the categories of the Golden Visa and made considerable adjustments to the Golden Residence Scheme to ease the eligibility requirements and expand the categories of those eligible to benefit from the program.

The validity of this visa has been expanded to ten years across the types of Golden Visa categories. The categories of persons who qualify for the UAE Golden visa are business investors, business entrepreneurs, extraordinary talents, scientific researchers, outstanding students and graduates, and talented workers.

Under the new regulations, those awarded the Golden Residence can sponsor their immediate family members, regardless of the ages of their children and spouses. In addition, no restriction is placed on the total number of workers sponsored under domestic support services.

The Golden visa holders and the members of their families are now granted 6 months grace period, which is an increase for the earlier 3 months after the visa expires or is canceled.

During the 6 months grace period, you can either exit the country or change your status to qualify for another type of resident visa.

New UAE visa rules to come into effect in September

Changes in entry and residency regulations for foreigners were announced on Monday

UAE visa

Dubai: The new entry and residency scheme for foreigners in UAE will be active as of September this year.

The UAE cabinet, headed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has approved the executive regulations of the Federal Decree-Law on Entry and Residence of Foreigners aimed at strengthening the UAE position as an ideal destination to live, work and invest.

  • UAE announces new entry and residency rules

The new visa rules were announced yesterday.

Ali Mohammad Al Shamsi, Chairman of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security, said the new executive regulations provide comprehensive information on the types and conditions of entry visas and residence permits.

“The new rules will support sustainable development and the economic diversity policy in the country by attracting skilled workers, talents, professionals, specialists and experts,” said Al Shamsi.

The new model, in some cases, allows people who enter as visitors to stay for 60 days rather than 30 days at present.

Parents can sponsor their male children until the age of 25, up from 18, allowing them to remain in the UAE after school and university.

Al Shamsi said the new rules have different residencies and new categories to attract investors, entrepreneurs, high skilled workers, outstanding students, frontliners and others.

“The new scheme will ease procedures, adding new advantages and end the link between residency and the work sponsor and enhance quality of life,” he added.

Al Shamsi said the new system will have a new generation of residencies in the country like the green visa that will provide five years of residency for skilled employees, without a sponsor or employer.

The green visa allows the holder to bring his or her family members as well as six months grace period after the residency expires or is canceled.

The green residency has three types. The first is for skilled workers, while the second is for freelancers and self-employed individuals. The third is for investors to establish or participate in commercial activities. It replaces the previous residence that was valid for two years only.

“The cabinet was keen to enhance family stability for residents and the new rules add new benefits for family members. Children of determination are granted a residence permit, regardless of their age,” Al Shamsi added.

He said Green Residency holders can bring their first-degree relatives into the country too.

The new model offers new options for visitors to have different, flexible and multi-entry of visit visas for up to one year and ends the need for arrivals to acquire sponsorship. The visit visa offers 60 days of validity and one platform to apply at.

The job exploration visa has been introduced with the aim of attracting young talents and skilled professionals to explore job opportunities. It does not require a sponsor or a host.

Another visa for investors is the exploration visa to explore investment opportunities inside the UAE. It does not require a sponsor or host.

Golden visa categories

Substantial amendments have been introduced to the Golden Residence Scheme to simplify the eligibility criteria and expand the categories of beneficiaries. This long-term 10-year residency is granted to investors, entrepreneurs, exceptional talents, scientists and professionals, outstanding students and graduates, humanitarian pioneers and frontline heroes.

According to the new rules, there will be no restriction related to the maximum duration of stay outside the UAE in order to keep the Golden Residence valid.

The amendments allow the Golden Residence holder to sponsor his/her family members, including spouse and children, regardless of their age, and to sponsor support services (domestic) laborers without limiting their number. If the holder of the Golden Residence dies, then his family members can stay in the UAE until the end of their permit duration.

Golden residency for scientists

The new rules aim to support and boost investment in the property sector by having new benefits in the Golden Residence for investors in this vital sector.

People are entitled to obtain the Golden Residence when purchasing a property worth no less than Dh2 million with a loan from specific local banks. Investors can also obtain Golden Residence when buying one or more off-plan properties of no less than Dh2 million from approved local real estate companies.

Residency is granted to scientists and researchers with high achievements and influence in their field based on recommendation from the Emirates Scientists Council.

The candidate should have a Ph.D. or master’s degree in the disciplines of engineering, technology, life sciences and natural sciences from the best universities in the world. The candidate should have substantial research achievements.

Golden residency for professionals

A major expansion has been introduced in this category to attract highly skilled workers with educational qualifications and professional experience in all disciplines including medicine, sciences and engineering, information technology, business and administration, education, law, culture and social sciences.

The applicants should have a valid employment contract in the UAE, and should be classified in the first or second occupational level as per the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation classification which is aligned with the International Standard of Classification of Occupations ISCO by the International Labour Organisation.

The minimum educational level must be a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, and the monthly salary should not be less than Dh30,000.

Golden residency for exceptional talents

This residence is granted to top talents in vital fields. It is awarded based on talent only, regardless of the educational qualification or the employment status or the monthly salary or professional level.

It requires the recommendation or approval of a federal or local government entity, and includes talented individuals in culture, art, sports, digital technology, invention and innovation and other vital fields.

Golden residency for entrepreneurs

The executive regulations set flexible requirements for entrepreneurs eligible to obtain the Golden Residence; an entrepreneur should own or be a partner in a startup registered in the country in the category of small and medium enterprises SME and generates annual revenues of not less than Dh1 million.

In addition, obtaining approval for a startup idea from an official business incubator or from the Ministry of Economy or the competent local authorities is sufficient to obtain the Golden Residence in this category.

Moreover, if the person is a founder (or one of the founders) of a previous entrepreneurial project (projects) that was sold with a total value of not less than Dh7 million, he will be entitled to Golden Residence. The approval of the Ministry of Economy or the competent local authorities is required for projects or ideas.

Golden visa for outstanding students and graduates

This residency targets high performing students in UAE secondary schools, and outstanding graduates from UAE universities and the best 100 universities worldwide according to specific criteria that includes their academic performance (cumulative average), the year of graduation, and the university classification.

The subject regulation was amended during the pandemic period. This allowed visitors to extend the tenure of stay for the stipulated period without exiting the country.

As the pandemic is under control and the conditions have become normal, the pre-pandemic regulations have been re-implemented by the authority. The visitor can pay a fee and extend his or her visa for a month. He or she should exit the country for further extensions.

Increase in Visa and Emirates ID Charges

The fees for visas and Emirates ID have been increased by the ICP. A one-month visit visa and Emirates ID had been costing AED 270. The fees for both have been increased to AED 370, AED 100 increase for each.

5-Year Multi-entry Visa

Hence all the documents including bank statements for the last 06 months indicating a balance of $4000 (or equivalent in any currency) in the individual’s account, proof of UAE health insurance, copy of flight ticket, and UAE residence proof have to be submitted for obtaining this visa.

The foreigner (the tourist) can enter the country any number of times he or she wants. And can stay for a period of ninety (90) days at a stretch during each visit. An extension of ninety (90) more days can be obtained after the initial 90 days.

Overstay Fine and Out Pass

The visitors staying exceeding the permitted period must pay an overstay fine. Then only the visitor will be permitted to leave the country. Those tourists exiting from Dubai should pay an additional amount for an out pass or leave permit. Nevertheless, this outpass/ leave permit system is not followed by any other emirate in the UAE.

30-days and 60-day Visit Visa

The UAE Cabinet, led by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum , the UAE Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai announced on Monday a set of administrative regulations to attract and preserve accomplished and skilled individuals in the country.

The new rules, which will be in effect from October 3 this year, will broaden the eligibility criteria to apply for long-term visas and will also increase the number of individuals who can apply for them.

Read on to know more about the new set of rules and regulations.

The new visa scheme is in its initial stages

As previously announced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security this week, the new rules are just beginning to be implemented, and will only be launched officially in a month. During the press briefing, the officials also said the introduction of the new UAE passport is also just in its preliminary phase and will be launched on October 3.

Earlier this year in April, the country also announced drastic changes to the UAE visa system, making it easier for both residents and visitors alike to enter the country. The changes were approved by the Vice President and Ruler of Dubai and state that the simplified strategy of 10 types of visas is a “step that supports the country’s competitiveness in the tourism, economic and educational sectors,” according to a tweet from the UAE government.

New visas for visitors

Once the new rules are thoroughly set in place, the tourist visas will be valid for 60 days, as opposed to their current validity of 30 days. A five-year, multi-entry tourist visa has also been announced and allows visitors to stay up to 90 continuous days in the UAE , although they are not allowed to go more than 180 days in a year.

If you're an entrepreneur looking to expand your commercial opportunities, you'll need to understand and comply with the ever-changing UAE residency rules. From evolving requirements to new regulations for tourist visas, there is an abundance of information to process.

An Overview of the New UAE Visa Rules 2023

Whether you're planning a visit or considering long-term residency, here are some key changes you should be aware of:

Validity of Freezone Visas Modified

One of the notable changes in the UAE residency rules in 2023 is the modification of the validity of Freezone visas. Free zones are specific areas within the UAE that offer various incentives to businesses and investors. The new rules may impact the duration and renewability of visas issued within these zones, so staying informed is essential if you're planning to establish or work for a company in a free zone.

Visa Fees Increase

In 2023, you may notice an increase in visa fees. The UAE government has adjusted visa fees for various categories. These changes are part of the government's efforts to diversify revenue sources and enhance economic stability. Be sure to check the latest fee structures to budget accordingly for your visa application.

Emirates ID Replaces Visa Stamps on Passports

The UAE is moving towards modernization by replacing traditional passport visa stamps with Emirates ID cards. This transition aims to streamline processes and enhance security. If you're a resident or planning to become one, ensure that you have the necessary Emirates ID and stay updated on the rollout of this new system.

Visa-On-Arrival Policies Have Changed

If you're accustomed to visa-on-arrival arrangements when visiting the UAE, it's crucial to understand that these policies may have undergone adjustments in 2023. Check the latest requirements and eligibility criteria before your trip to avoid any inconvenience at the border.

New Visa-Free Destinations

While there may be changes to visa policies, the UAE continues to expand its list of visa-free destinations for its citizens. This is great news for UAE passport holders, as it opens up more travel opportunities without the need for visas. If you're a UAE citizen, explore the latest additions to the list of visa-free countries.

Smart Ways to Apply for a Visa

Navigating the UAE's visa rules in 2023 can be a smoother process if you leverage smart tools and resources. Utilize official government websites and authorized visa application centers for accurate information and assistance. Additionally, consider consulting with immigration experts who can provide expert guidance tailored to your specific situation.

An In-Depth Look at New UAE Residency Rules 2023

In 2022, the UAE authorities enacted a new visa system that aimed to make obtaining residency in the nation easier for ex-pats. These changes, implemented by the Federal Authority for Identity, Port Security, and Customs, aim to increase the cost of 30-day and 60-day tourist visas to AED 100.

Additionally, these changes include increased flexibility for UAE visa extensions, new residency categories for investors and skilled professionals, and enhanced transparency that makes it easier for individuals to make informed decisions about their residency in the UAE .

Changes for the UAE 5-Year Visa

The recent sweeping changes for UAE visas are also affecting longer-term visa owners in a positive way, offering extra flexibility, simplified processing, and additional benefits such as a 6-month grace period once your visa has expired. These changes are expected to affect:

Skilled Workers

The UAE's 5-year visa program has become more accessible to skilled workers from various fields. Previously, this category primarily targeted high-income professionals, but now it extends to a broader range of skilled individuals. This change opens up avenues for engineers, healthcare professionals, educators, and other skilled workers to secure long-term residency in the UAE, fostering stability and career growth.

Freelancers and Self-Employed Individuals

One of the most exciting changes is the inclusion of freelancers and self-employed individuals in the 5-year visa program. Freelancers across creative, tech, and consulting industries and entrepreneurs can now apply for this visa. This update recognizes the growing gig economy and encourages talented freelancers to contribute to the UAE's vibrant business landscape.

Investors and Partners

Investors have long been a focus of the UAE's visa initiatives, but now there are even more opportunities. The 5-year visa program offers investors and their partners a pathway to long-term residency. Whether you're establishing a new business, expanding an existing one, or making substantial investments in the UAE, these changes provide enhanced security and stability.

Children of Emirati Mothers

Another significant development is the inclusion of children born to Emirati mothers under the 5-year visa program. This change ensures that such children have access to the same privileges and benefits as those born to Emirati fathers. It's a significant step toward greater inclusivity and equality for all citizens and residents.

Entry Visa Types in 2023

The UAE has introduced a series of new entry visas that do not require a national sponsor and provide a flexible framework for a wide range of individuals. Let’s look at a few of these visa types:

Job Exploration Visa

New to the UAE's visa landscape is the Job Exploration Visa. Aimed at job seekers and those seeking employment opportunities, this visa allows individuals to explore job prospects in the UAE for a designated period. It offers a unique chance to network, attend interviews, and understand the job market before fully committing.

The Business Entry Visa

For entrepreneurs and business enthusiasts, the Business Entry Visa offers an exciting opportunity to streamline the process of starting a business, attracting more investors, and promoting economic growth.

The Multi-Entry Tourist Visa

Tourism remains a vital sector in the UAE, and the introduction of the Multi-Entry Tourist Visa underscores the country's commitment to welcoming travelers. This visa type allows tourists to enter and exit the UAE multiple times within a specified period, making it more convenient for those who wish to explore the country thoroughly.

The Family Visa

The UAE recognizes the importance of family unity, and the Family Visa has changed to accommodate various family structures. This visa category facilitates the reunification of families and is more inclusive of different family members, fostering stronger bonds within the community.

Friends and Relatives Visa

Visiting friends and families in the UAE has become more accessible with the Friends and Relatives Visa. This category is designed for individuals who want to spend time with their loved ones in the UAE and simplifies the process of obtaining a visa for such visits.

Entry Permits

Entry Permits have been updated to cater to various needs, including short-term visits, business meetings, and specialized events. The government has streamlined the application process to make it more efficient and user-friendly.

Residence Permit

The UAE's Residence Permit, a coveted status for many expatriates, has seen updates to make it more accessible to long-term residents, skilled professionals, and investors. These changes offer greater stability and security for those who choose to make the UAE their home.

UAE Entry Permit Extension

Along with the recent changes to the UAE visa rules, UAE entry permits will be eligible for up to a 90-day extension based on the purpose of the visit. These extension changes include:

  • A 48-hour permit extension for eligible applications. This extension can be found through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customz, and Ports Security via their online portal.

Many foreigners and long-term residents might be affected by the new rules. As a result of the new visa regulations, travelling to, residing in, and working in the nation should be much more convenient. UAE New Visa Regulations 2023

The Federal Decree-Law on Foreign Entrance and Residency was recently authorised by the UAE Cabinet’s executive rules. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has implemented a new immigration and residency policy in an effort to recruit and keep talented people from all over the world. The purpose of the revised entrance and visa policies is to facilitate travel to and within the United Arab Emirates and increase the country’s appeal to visitors. Also, visitors visiting the UAE have a lot of leeway in terms of extending their stay. Furthermore, the ICA now offers a service for providing visas to family groups travelling to the UAE for vacation, medical care, or to accompany a patient for a stay of 60 or 180 days.

New Rules for UAE Visa Stamping 2023

New Rules for UAE Visa Stamping 2023

The United Arab Emirates government has recently stated that it would no longer need the stamping of resident visas in passports. In order to increase tourism and facilitate visa applications for UAE citizens, the new regulation will go into effect in January 2023. United Arab Emirates nationals may now apply for both their Emirates ID and residence visa in a single step under the new regulations. The new procedure is meant to streamline the application and cut down on wait times. The government has increased the cost of visas and Emirates IDs by AED 100, in addition to instituting a new smart service charge.

Visa Extension New Rules 2023

Travellers with 90-day visit visas may now extend their stay in Dubai and the rest of the UAE for an extra 30 days on a one-time basis thanks to visit visa extension rules introduced by the ICP, the UAE Federal Authority for Identification, Nationality, Customs and Ports Security. Visa extensions may be granted for up to 90 days, which is in addition to the visa’s initial entrance validity term of 30 days. Thus, it is not possible to renew tourist visas while in the United Arab Emirates. Anybody currently in the UAE on a visit visa who wishes to prolong their stay must leave the country and reapply for a visa extension upon their return.

Please note : While there has been no official announcement of the new visa extension rule by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security (ICP); it has been reported that requests for extensions of stay made while still in the country are recently being refused.

Visit Visa Overstay UAE New Rules 2023

Visit Visa Overstay UAE New Rules 2023

When a visitor’s visa expires in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), they must depart the country with an outpass or leaving permission. If you need an exit visa or outpass from Dubai or the United Arab Emirates, you may get one at the airport, at land borders, or at the Al Awir Immigration office. Prices for the same range from 200 to 300 AED. Anybody who overstays their visa will be subject to a fine of AED 50 per day. With the new visit visa rules in UAE, visitors to the United Arab Emirates will have an extra 10 days to leave the country after their visa expires. On the other hand, they will be responsible for the overstay fees if their stay exceeds 10 days. It is important to note that cancelled flights and closed airports will not incur an overstay fee.

New Rules for UAE Visit Visa Price 2023

With the new 2023 Visa rules, Visa fees have doubled, which is the most notable difference. This includes tourist visas for 30 and 60 days in the United Arab Emirates and Dubai, which each cost AED 100 more than they did before. Additionally, the ICA’S charge for a visitor visa valid for a single month has increased from AED 270 to AED 370.

Unused UAE Visit Visa New Rules 2023

If a visitor to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) cannot enter the country within a certain amount of time after receiving a visit visa, the visitor must revoke the visa. Cancelling a visa after it has already been issued may cost as much as AED 300, which varies widely by the travel agency.

Rules for Golden Visa 2023

The golden new visa rules in UAE 2023 allow qualifying individuals to live and work in the Emirate for an impressive 10 years, which is a substantial increase from the previous duration. Investors, entrepreneurs, skilled workers, scientists, exceptional students and graduates, and individuals with outstanding abilities are all among those who may benefit from the new regulations. In addition, Golden Residence holders can now sponsor their spouses and children of any age and even support service labourers, with no limit on the number of sponsorships. But that’s not all; the UAE has also extended the grace period for Golden Visa holders and their families, so there’s no need to worry if your residence visa expires or is cancelled. You now have 6 more months to make the necessary arrangements.

Green Residence 2023

Green Residence 2023

The UAE is launching a new 5-year residency program for the UAE Green Visa, aimed primarily at attracting skilled professionals, talented individuals, freelancers, investors, and entrepreneurs from around the world. The requirements for each residence type have been simplified, with more benefits than before.

Family Members Now Have New Benefits

The United Arab Emirates has announced new perks for the families of Golden Visa holders. Those who have these visas are now eligible to apply for a waiver of the deposit normally necessary to sponsor a parent for a 10-year stay. In addition, residents may easily sponsor five-year residences for first-degree relatives, allowing them to bring their spouses and kids to the United Arab Emirates. For Green visa holders and their families, the leave grace period following a resident visa cancellation has been increased to 6 months. Overstay fees may be assessed on a dependent’s visa if the green visa holder fails to renew or cancel that visa. The holder of a Green Residence may also sponsor his immediate family members, and their stays in the country will be granted for the same number of years as the holders.

Children of Emirati Women: Five-Year Residency Visas

Children born to Emirati women who marry foreign nationals can now have their residence visas extended to five years from the previous three years under a new UAE policy. For many kids whose families have been living in the UAE on tourist visas, this instruction represents a huge step forward since it guarantees their stability.  These kids will be able to remain in the UAE for five years with their families, go to school, get medical treatment, and work if they want, thanks to the new resident visas.

Visa Rules 2023 for Entry

The UAE has created roughly 10 categories of entrance visas that do not need a host or sponsor. These visas may be used for either a single entry or repeated entries, and they are valid for a total of 60 days beginning on the day of issue. Additionally, visa restrictions have been loosened, enabling travellers to choose the visa that works best for them. Anybody who wants to extend their stay may do so by renewing their visa for the same amount of time.

Job Exploration Visa

Job Exploration Visa

The new Work Exploration Visa has been established to make it easier for foreigners to explore and experiment with work opportunities in the United Arab Emirates. As a host or sponsor is not required, anybody may apply for the visa regardless of age or profession.

The Job Exploration Visa has the following prerequisites:

  • Having a first, second, or third-tier skill set, as determined by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation
  • Being a recent graduate of one of the top 500 colleges worldwide
  • Having at least a bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, in education.

Business Entry Visa

The UAE has created the Business Entry Visa as part of its new visa requirements for 2023 in order to attract investors and entrepreneurs who are interested in learning more about the country’s commercial and investment opportunities. As a result of this, visitors no longer require a sponsor or host in order to enter the country.

Multi-Entry Tourist Visa

Tourists visiting the United Arab Emirates may now get a visa that allows multiple entries over the course of five years. A visitor with this visa may enter the country numerous times without a sponsor and stay for up to 90 days at a time. To apply for this visa, you need to have at least $4,000 (AED 14,700) in your account, or its foreign currency equivalent, for the previous six (6) months before submitting your application.

Family Visa

Family Visa

Parents will have an easier time bringing their children to the UAE under the new visa requirements. Families may apply for sponsorship for their children who are minors up to age 18, and for male children, up to age 25. With a special visa, parents may petition for their disabled children to join them in the country. Sponsorship for female children who have not yet married may continue indefinitely.

Entry Permit to Visit Relatives and Friends

A sponsor or host is not required for a tourist visa to the United Arab Emirates. This entrance visa is for family members of UAE citizens or permanent residents.

Entry Permit for a Temporary Work Mission

A work visa may be requested by anybody who will be entering the UAE on an official business trip. This visa is restricted to those who already have close relatives or friends who are UAE nationals or permanent residents.

Visitors need the following in order to be granted entrance for a brief labour mission:

  • A short-term employment agreement
  • An explanation of the visit’s objective in writing from the employer
  • Physical and mental fitness documentation

Entry Permit for Study and Training

The new UAE visa regulations 2023 include an entrance permit for study and training, which is aimed particularly at students and trainees in the nation to take advantage of the many educational opportunities and internships available. Sponsors for this visa type include governmental or commercial entities, as well as UAE-licensed academic and scientific institutions. A letter from the organisation detailing the study, training, or internship program’s specifics are required in order to apply for a visa.

Residence Permit for Humanitarian Cases

Individuals with special humanitarian situations will be eligible for residence permits under the revised visa requirements in 2023. Citizens of the UAE with foreign passports may now apply for residency permits for their parents or children, as can residents of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states with international passports for their spouses and children.

Dubai & UAE Re-Entry Permit

Dubai & UAE Re-Entry Permit

Anyone who leaves the UAE for more than six months would now have to apply for re-entry permission. Residents of the UAE who have been away from the country for more than six months will be able to return within 30 days after the re-entry permit’s acceptance.

Even if a resident of the UAE travels outside the country for more than 6 months, their residence visa will not be revoked. The re-entry permit is only available to citizens who have a valid cause for being abroad for more than six months and can present evidence supporting that reason. You may submit your application for a re-entry visa on the website of the Federal Authority for Identification, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security (ICP).

UAE Entry Permit Extension

Depending on the reason for the visit and other considerations, visitors to the United Arab Emirates may be eligible to have their initial entrance permits extended for up to 90 days. A valid passport (with at least six months remaining on its expiration date) is required, and the appropriate travel agency should apply for tourist entrance permits on your behalf. If the criteria are satisfied, the entrance permit may be extended within as short as 48 hours.

To apply for a visa extension, applicants must first sign up for the ICP Smart Service system and establish an account. After signing up, applicants will be able to access the application form and costs. An additional 30 days may be added for AED 610 ($166.07) each time, but only for those who aren’t citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council states. Residents of the GCC are required to pay AED 260 (USD 70.78) and provide a passport copy when applying for a 30-day extension.

Permits for medical treatment, accompanying family members of GCC residents, and students may all be extended for up to an additional month. Additionally, the time for which a visitor is allowed to remain in the country on a visit visa will be determined by the visitor’s intended activities and the discretion of the relevant authorities, although it cannot be more than one year.

The new visa rules in UAE 2023 are set to have a significant impact on visitors and expatriates in the country. With the aim of making it easier for people to visit, live and work in the UAE, these new regulations represent an important step towards attracting more foreign talent and boosting the country’s economy. It is vital to stay informed about these changes and how they may affect your plans. By keeping up-to-date with the latest developments of new visa rules in UAE 2023, you can ensure that you make the most of the opportunities available in this exciting and dynamic country.

This article is not formal advice, and is here for informational and educational purposes only. The facts might have also changed since we wrote it.

Those seeking formal advice should contact government agencies directly.

Introduction

New visa rules in UAE have been made by the UAE government.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) has implemented some of the biggest residence and entrance permit reforms in the UAE.

UAE’s visit visa system has undergone significant change as a result of the new system, which also brought forth new UAE visa regulations.

In this guide, we’ll cover all of the adjustments that have been made, starting with the October 2022 increase in costs for Emirates IDs and visas for visits and residence in the UAE , up to the most recent revision.

New Visa Rules In UAE

1. new uae visit visa extension rule.

The UAE Immigration agencies in all Emirates have stopped extending visiting visas without requiring visitors to leave the country . Instead, visitors must leave the nation, seek an extension, and then re-enter.

Airport-to-airport services are one way to extend your visa in the UAE.

To use this service, book a flight through a travel company like Arabiers to the closest Middle Eastern nation, such as Oman, and then wait a few hours at the airport while your visa extension application is processed.

You enter the visa after the extension has been authorized, and then you arrange a ticket back to the UAE.

2. New UAE Visa Stamping Rule

The government of the UAE (UAE) has stopped stamping resident visas on passports in favour of providing Emirates ID cards.

Because of this, it won’t be necessary to gather passports before stamping them, and UAE nationals may now submit a single application to get their Emirates ID and residency visa .

The application procedure will be made simpler and take lesser time thanks to this new rule.

3. New UAE Visit Visa Overstay Rule

You are regarded to have overstayed in the UAE if you stay longer than the number of days permitted by the visa you used to enter the country , and you will be subject to overstaying penalty.

If you wish to leave the nation through Dubai, you must obtain an outpass or departure permission in order to do so.

It’s vital to keep in mind that the outpass is only necessary when leaving the UAE through Dubai; other emirates don’t require you to get it.

At the airport and at the immigration offices at the land borders, you can obtain a Dubai/UAE exit permit. Alternatively, the Al Awir Immigration office is where the outpass or departure permit may be acquired. This outpass costs between AED 200 and 300.

4. Standardization of UAE Visa Overstay Fine

ICP has announced that the overstaying penalty will be standardized at AED 50 per day of overstay.

After you’ve used up the grace period provided after the visa you used to enter the UAE expires, the overstaying fines begin to mount.

If you are unable to depart the nation on time due to airport closures or aircraft disruptions, you won’t be penalized for remaining longer than permitted.

5. New UAE ICP Visa Services Fee

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) recently announced an increase in all service fees of AED 100.

The increase was mandated by the new regulations and applied to all services provided by ICP, including the issuance of Emirates IDs, visit visas, and residency permits.

6. New UAE 5-Year Multiple Entry Visa

You can enter the UAE on self-sponsorship many times after receiving the visa. When you enter the nation, the visa enables you to stay for 90 days.

If your visa expires and you wish to remain longer, you can renew it for 90 days. It is the best visa for individuals who have a loved one in the UAE since you have adequate time to spend with them.

The following are some of the documents needed when applying for this 5-year visa with multiple entries:

  • A bank statement for the last six months that shows a balance of $4,000 or the equivalent in other currencies
  • Proof of health insurance in the UAE
  • A copy of the applicant’s flight ticket in copy form, and
  • A letter of invitation, serving as proof of residency, from friends or family members who live in the UAE

7. Resumption of UAE 60-Day Visa

Following the implementation of the new changes, the ICP resumed the 60-day travel visa on October 3rd, 2022. Tourists are permitted to stay in the UAE for up to two months.

8. New UAE Entry Permits to Visit Family or Friends in the UAE

You are eligible to apply for a UAE entry permit to visit a friend or family if they are a UAE citizen or resident . No travel agency, sponsor, host, or other intermediaries will be required in order for you to obtain permission.

However, if the bearer of a Golden visa neglects to renew or cancel the dependents’ visas, the dependents may be required to pay an overstay fine.

Recently, the UAE launched a brand-new tool in the shape of an online test that can quickly and accurately determine if prospective candidates are qualified for the Golden visa .

The UAE recently debuted a new tool that determines if prospective candidates are in fact qualified for the Golden visa in only two minutes. The tool is in the form of an online quiz which you can access here .

The general rule is that if an expatriate resident lives outside the UAE for more than 180 days continuously, his/her residence visa will be nullified automatically. If this happens, they will have to apply for a new entry permit to enter the UAE again.

However, there are some exceptions which allow an expatriate resident to stay outside the UAE for more than six months and at the same time maintain the validity of his/her residence visa. The rule does not apply to:

  • foreigner wife of an Emirati citizen
  • domestic helpers accompanying Emiratis having a scholarship for study abroad
  • domestic helpers accompanying UAE patients travelling or sent abroad for treatment
  • expatriate residents and their companions sent abroad for treatment, provided they submit a medical report approved by medical authorities in the UAE

Your sponsor must renew your residence visa before it expires. A renewed visa will let you continue living legally in the UAE without incurring fines or facing legal consequences for the same. UAE residents are granted longer flexible grace periods that reach up to 6 months (according to resident cateogry) to stay in the country after the residence permit is cancelled or expired.

The ICP has standardised the overstaying fines in the UAE. According to the new rules, visit, tourist and residence visa overstaying fees have standardised at AED 50 per day. Those overstaying on a residency visa will have to pay AED 50 each day (AED 50 per day instead of AED 25).

Remember that when the visa expires, your Emirates ID card issued by the ICP also expires.

If there is a need to renew your residence visa a few months earlier (one to six months) for travelling reasons, you must first take special permission and approval from ICP.

If you a have a residence visa sponsored either by a family member or by your employer, and you decide to leave the country permanently, your residence visa must be cancelled officially.

Normally, only the sponsor can cancel your residence visa. You cannot process the application on your own.

If a company decides to cancel an employment visa of its employee, it must first approach Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation with an application to cancel the employee’s labour contract and labour card. The employee must also sign this application. Then, the employer should apply to ICP for visa cancellation.

The company must also cancel the work permit. For this, it must submit a letter signed by the employee stating that he has already received all his wages and end of services benefits to Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.

An individual sponsoring his/her spouse, children and other dependents must cancel the dependents’ visas before he cancels his/her own.

How to cancel your residence visa?

There are two ways to cancel your visa. You can do it either through a registered typing centre or online.

The sponsor may visit any typing office registered by ICP in the respective emirate. The typing office will fill the cancellation form on your behalf and process it online through ICP.

Alternatively, the sponsor may process the cancellation  online through the ICP website or the ICP application Google Play or App Store .

Greece's New Golden Visa programme 2024

Greece's New Golden Visa Programme 2024

September 3 rd 2024 | Europe, Property, Residency, Investor Visa, Programme News -->

As of September 1st, 2024, Greece’s revised Golden Visa programme is now officially in effect, bringing significant updates to how foreign investors can obtain residency through property investment.

Key Changes To The Greek Golden Visa Programme:

Two investment zones: €800,000 and €400,000 minimums.

The new regulations introduce a tiered investment requirement based on the property’s location:

  • €800,000 Investment Zone: This higher threshold applies to sought-after areas such as the entire Region of Attica (including Athens), Thessaloniki, the islands of Mykonos and Santorini, and 32 other islands, which include: Crete, Euboea (Evia), Rhodes, Corfu, Lesbos, Chios, Zante (Zakynthos), Salamis (Salamina), Kos, Kefalonia, Samos, Lefkada, Syros, Naxos, Kalymnos, Lemnos, Paros, Thassos, Aegina, Tinos, Ikaria, Andros, Leros, Karpathos, Skiathos, Milos, Skopelos, Spetses, Kythera, Patmos, Poros, and Alonissos.
  • €400,000 Investment Zone: For properties located outside these prime areas, the minimum investment is set at €400,000.

Investment Criteria:

Single Property Requirement: Investors must put their funds into a single property with a minimum size of 120 square meters (approximately 1,292 square feet).

Use Restrictions: Properties purchased under the Golden Visa cannot be used for short-term rentals, such as through Airbnb. Failing to comply with this rule could lead to the revocation of the residence permit and a fine of €50,000.

Exceptions to Greece’s Revised Golden Visa Rules:

Despite the new thresholds, certain types of investments allow for the previous €250,000 minimum:

Conversion of Commercial to Residential Use: If a property is converted from commercial to residential, the minimum investment remains at €250,000 , regardless of its location.

Restoration of Listed Buildings: Properties that are classified as listed buildings and undergo full restoration by the investor also qualify for the €250,000 minimum. However, completing the restoration is necessary to renew the Golden Visa after five years.

Transitional Period:

A transitional period has been introduced for those who started their investment process under the previous rules:

Investors who signed a pre-contract and made a 10% deposit by August 31st, 2024, can still qualify for the €250,000 threshold providing they complete their purchase by December 31st, 2024.

If the initial purchase isn’t completed by the end of 2024, the investor can transfer the investment to another property, as long as the acquisition is finalized by April 30th, 2025.

Considerations for Golden Visa Investors

At this early stage, qualifying €250,000 projects are few and far between. However, La Vida has partnered with several developers who are preparing to launch new qualifying options in the coming weeks. Given the expected strong demand and limited supply during this initial period, it’s likely that many developers will wait to see how the market settles before introducing more options. If you’re keen to secure a Golden Visa under the €250,000 category, it’s advisable to act swiftly as these opportunities may be quickly snapped up. Overstayers who wish to leave the UAE must apply for the visa amnesty in the emirate where their residency was issued, the authority in Dubai has clarified.

Those who wish to continue residing in Dubai after regularising their status can follow up with the emirate. “If they wish to remain in the country and obtain a job opportunity in the Emirate of Dubai, they can follow up on amending their status with Dubai Residency, regardless of their file with the other emirates,” the statement added.

This directive comes as part of the ongoing amnesty programme , which aims to assist overstayers in regularising their status and either leaving the country or securing employment opportunities.
