With trail bikes in Trek’s lineup reaching five-digit prices, it is nice to see the industry giant offer a full-suspension trail bike that doesn’t break the bank. Trek was kind enough to send us the Fuel EX 5 to ride and review in our budget-bike shoot-out. At just under $2,500, the Fuel EX 5 is one of the most expensive bikes on test. We were excited to get the Fuel EX 5 out on the trails and see how it stacks up against the others in our test bike group.

ABOUT THE TREK FUEL EX 5

Many of us are familiar with Trek’s trail-busting Fuel EX line. The Gen 6 Fuel EX saw added travel – not to mention a new frame design – but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for the shorter-travel younger sibling out on the trails. With 140/130mm of travel and relatively moderate geometry, the Trek Fuel Gen 5 has been a trail bike many have reached for years.

FRAME AND FEATURES

Trek’s Fuel EX 5 features Alpha Platinum Aluminum. Trek boasts their aluminum “is continuously cold extruded and butted at multiple points, and hydroformed into sophisticated tube shapes for maximum strength and minimum weight.” The Fuel EX also has Trek’s Knock Block headset system, which prevents the handlebars from hitting the top tube and causing damage in a crash. Cables are internally routed, and the frame is offered in two color options: black, or the black and yellow we received.

The Fuel EX is offered in seven sizes, from XS to XL. X-small and small frame sizes come with 27.5-inch wheels and a pronounced dip in the top tube to help with standover height. Sizes medium and up are all equipped with 29-inch wheels. If you are familiar with Trek’s sizing, you will know that they also offer a medium/large size for those in between the two sizes. This is the only “in-between” size offered.

Trek’s Mino Link allows you to change the Fuel EX’s geometry. Switching from high to low will slacken the bike by 0.5°, drop the BB by 6mm, and shorten the reach by 5mm. While the bike comes with a 140mm travel fork, Trek gives allowance for bumping up to 150mm to improve descending capability.

The Fuel EX is essentially a linkage-driven single-pivot with one key difference—a pivot at the rear axle. Trek calls this their Active Braking Pivot (ABP) design. On most suspension designs, braking is considered to negatively impact the rear suspension’s ability to absorb impacts and provide traction. Trek’s ABP design aims to allow the rear suspension to remain more active under braking forces.

The Fuel EX 5’s geometry remains relatively moderate compared to today’s trail bike trends. For clarity’s sake, I’ll share the geometry in the “high” setting of the geometry-adjusting Flip Chip. The head tube angle is 66.5° and is paired with a 75.5° seat tube angle. The Stack Height ranges from 559mm to 623mm and Reach lengths range from 400mm to 500mm. Our size large came in at 609mm and 475mm respectively..

The BB height is 341mm in X-small and small, then 346mm for medium and up. Similarly, the BB drop is only 14mm below the axles on the two smallest sizes, and 28mm on sizes medium and up to account for the larger wheels. 436mm chainstays feature across all sizes. Our size Large Wheelbase totalled 1211mm.

BUILD SPECS

For the Fuel EX 5, Trek only offers two build options: a higher-end, 9.8 AXS Gen 5 and the budget-friendly EX 5 they sent us at $2,499. Leading the charge on our test bike was a Rockshox Recon Silver with the Motion Control damper and lockout. In the rear, there was a X-Fusion Pro 2 shock with “open” and “climb” positions.

The drivetrain is a complete Shimano Deore M6100 12-speed build, with Shimano’s 10-51 tooth cassette and a 30-tooth chainring. Shimano also handles the brakes, with 2-caliper hydraulic stoppers and 180mm rotors. 35mm width Alex MD35 wheels are laced to Bontrager hubs, and roll on wide 2.6 Maxxis Rekons. Bontrager makes up the rest of the build with tires, cockpit, and saddle—with the exception of a TranzX dropper post at a short 130mm drop length.

With a brand name as large as Trek, our expectations with the Fuel EX 5 were reasonably high. Even with a more budget-friendly component build, we figured Trek’s proven platform would shine through, regardless of the parts hanging from the frame.

When we tested the Trek Fuel EX 5 on the trails, we found it best suited for riders looking to put in miles. Its very moderate 66.5° headtube angle—the steepest of any of the bikes on test—puts the rider’s body more toward the front of the bike. This allows for a comfortable pedaling position, especially on climbs, which the Fuel EX 5 did reasonably well on. That forward-heavy position also provided good handling on the relatively techy bits of the climbs.

Even with a steeper headtube angle, the Fuel EX 5 wasn’t overly twitchy on faster descents. With 130mm of rear travel, it tackled some rough and chunky trails reasonably well, but finding its limit was quite easy for our aggressive riding crew. It also jumped decently, although the suspension had been firmed up quite a bit. This was done out of necessity, to add support to prevent harsh bottoming out on harder hits. Less aggressive riders looking for a more conventional light-duty trail bike may not feel the need to do the same.

One thing that seemed to hold the Trek Fuel EX 5 back while descending was the dropper post. Our size large EX 5 came with a 130mm dropper, a much shorter length than we’re used to for a size large frame. This meant having quite a bit less post insertion to get proper saddle height for climbing. When it was time to point the EX 5 downhill, the seat, even when dropped all the way down, was high enough between your legs to make handling the bike uncomfortable.

Initially, the expectation was that the Trek Fuel EX 5 might be the most efficient and best pedaling bike on test. However, we found that this wasn’t the case once we hit the trails. The bike’s geometry teased that as the case, but something seemed to be holding it back. After several of our testers spent considerable time on the Fuel EX, we concluded that the rolling weight of the wheels made the bike seem sluggish. We’re not sure why a trail bike is spec’d with 35mm inner width rims, but that, combined with 2.6 width tires, surely hurt the Trek’s performance when it came to rotational efficiency.

As with many of the other budget bikes in the field, the suspension and brakes were also where the Trek Fuel EX 5 came up short. The Fuel EX 5 shared the same suspension, and many of the same issues, as the GT Sensor Sport. The fork and shock both seemed sticky, and there were very few adjustments. The air pressure X-Fusion recommended for me (Travis) essentially turned the bike into a hardtail. When I let air out to get an appropriate SAG, the shock bottomed out hopping off a curb. Regarding brakes, the Shimano 2-pistons performed better than some of the other brakes on the budget bikes, but they still left us wanting a bit more power.

High value, high performance, and impressive versatility– those are three features many would love to see in a mountain trail bike. But does Trek Fuel Ex 5 hold up to its marketing in a review– or are there better options?

Trail mountain biking is nothing new. But in the past decade, trail mountain biking has steadily grown from a niche activity to one loved by many. You only need to look at 2020 mountain bike riding statistics to get a picture of just how impactful trail biking has become and what it means for many.

Trail riding is unsurprisingly the most popular of all types of mountain biking , including enduro, downhill , and more. In a survey, over 92 percent of cyclists participated in the trail ride, a little over 56 percent in enduro, and 30 percent in downhill in 2 years.

But what’s driving so many to hit the trails? Trail riding is the most accessible for new riders, requires less heavy-duty equipment, and poses a lower risk of injury vs something like downhill riding. Mountain biking of all forms is a means of exercise, exposure to fresh air, and enjoying the community.

But even though the survey also indicated mental health benefits– with over 92 percent of respondents saying cycling helps balance negative emotions–there remains a barrier. Mountain biking is expensive, and not everyone can afford the equipment. But even if you can, you don’t want to overspend– and you also want to find a bike that will provide a smooth, stable ride.

That’s why I want to look at Trek Fuel Ex 5 , a trail bike that claims to be of great value. This guide will tell you my selection criteria for finding the best trail bike and review how Trek Fuel Ex 5 compares.

Fuel EX 5 Gen 5 | Trek Bikes

Fuel EX 5 is a full-suspension trail bike that's ready to handle it all. The Fuel EX 5 hits the mark as a high-value, high-performance mountain bike with exceptional versatility.

What is trail mountain biking?

Trek Fuel Ex 5 Review

When you think about mountain biking, you may picture steep inclines and declines and even jumps. But in between that rigorous biking and road biking is trail mountain biking. Trail riding is a general term that encompasses off-road riding.

Dirt and grass path away from a hectic life. Unlike with road biking, you’re not going to encounter cars– though you could encounter other cyclists if you pick a popular TRS that are most common, and they may feature twists, turns, and inclines or declines– but that isn’t the main focus.

The concept of trail riding is providing timail. You’ll contend with various terrain, and trail mountain biking is more challenging in terms of technique and balance– but also slower than road cycling.

Is mountain biking a better workout than road biking?

Whether or not mountain biking is considered a better workout vs road biking, as you can imagine, is somewhat a matter of perspective. That is: how do you define a good workout? For some, it’s calories burnt. Others are worried about muscle gains or enjoyment.

All of these, and, of course, cardiovascular fitness, are valid factors. Mountain biking is more ideal for muscle development and a full-body workout. You’ll use more upper body strength, while road riding is mostly focused on lower legs and cardiovascular endurance.

You can cover more ground more quickly road cycling, but the ground you’re covering riding on trails is more challenging. Holistically, mountain biking is considered a slightly better workout– with the added advantage of scenic and quiet locations. Still, road biking can be an excellent workout if you enjoy it more or if that’s simply what you have access to.

Do I need a trail bike?

trail bike

The first step is to assess whether or not you need a trail bike. Chances are if you’re considering a trail bike, it’s for good reason. If you already have a road bike it may be tempting to take it out on a trail- but that’s not a good idea. While bike categories may seem arbitrary, they exist for a reason.

Road bikes are typically made with a lightweight aluminum frame or other lightweight material, slim tires, and dropped geometry. A road bike is designed to reduce friction and optimize speed– so it’s not going to hold up well on uneven terrain. Road bikes simply don’t provide the traction and control you need for trail riding.

What is the difference between a trail bike and a mountain bike?

Mountain bike is an umbrella term for many types of bikes. A trail bike is a form of a mountain bike, so it’s a misnomer to say the two are different. So instead, I want to take a look at specific bike types and how they compare with a trail bike.

What is the difference between enduro and trail MTB?

Enduro mountain bikes are hardy bikes designed for downhill riding. They’re notable for their long travel and also accelerate at steep inclines. Enduro bikes are bulkier than general trail mountain bikes but are also more efficient, designed for trail racing competitions. You should get an enduro if you plan on racing or want to take on steep descents and inclines.

If you just want to ride recreationally on moderate trails, a trail bike will save you money, storage space and is a bit easier to learn how to ride.  All-mountain bikes are included in the general category of enduro (which refers to racing), so the differences between trail and all-mountain bikes are the same as for enduro.

What’s the difference between a trail bike and a motocross bike?

Motocross bikes have a very specific purpose. These bikes are a form of a motorcycle and are ridden on muddy tracks with controlled conditions. Not only are they motor-operated, but they also feature bulky tires and handlebars and are bulky.

Dirt bikes are in between– nonmotorized bikes meant to tackle muddy conditions with knobby tires and a heavy frame. Trail bikes are far lighter and a bit more versatile, meant to tackle different trial types, and also designed for riding in fair to moderate conditions.

What’s the difference between XC and trail?

XC, or Cross Country , is a popular mountain bike type known for its versatility. XC bikes are ridden on trails and roads, making them a great crossover bike– though they’re more efficient on trails and not meant as a replacement for road bikes. It depends on the model you’re looking at.

Still, XC bikes are more lightweight and accelerate more easily than your average trail mountain bike. XC bikes are used for tortuous paths, but they’re not equipped for climbing or descending as much. XC bikes are used more for racing, while trail bikes are used for general rides and focus on control and greater shock absorption.

What is a trail bike good for?

trail bike

A trail bike is the most popular type of mountain bike for a good reason. It’s less specialized than other mountain bikes and can be used for most trails. Trail bikes can climb up or descend, though they aren’t intended for racing or especially steep inclines and declines or as inclement weather. Think of a trail bike as a recreational bike that’s harder than a road bike and offers more stability than a racing XC bike.

Can you jump a trail bike?

Technically you can jump just about any bike, but there are bikes designed for jumping. Trail bikes are not a great option for jumping, as they don’t have the acceleration and inertia to get much air. And while they offer control, that control isn’t designed for performing jumps. At most, you could do some modest jumping. If your main objective is to find a bike for jumps, I recommend a dirt bike.

Can I take a trail bike to a bike park?

While trail bikes are more versatile than some mountain bikes, they aren’t designed for road or bike parks. Trail bikes do perform at their best on trails.

Can you use a trail bike for downhill?

Trail bikes climb and descend efficiently. They offer control, but they’re not meant for the very steepest trails, nor are they designed for purely downhill biking. The key here is to understand that trail bikes value control over speed.

You can’t expect to do downhill racing, but a good trail bike can handle inclines and declines.

How do I choose a trail bike? ( My Buying Criteria)

If you’ve decided that a trail bike is the right type of bike for you, make sure that you find a bike that’s going to last and provide stability. Before I review Trek Fuel Ex 5, here’s a succinct guide to my selection criteria for finding a great trail bike.

What trail mountain bike size should I get?

Determining the right size is important for comfort and control, but it can also be tricky. Different brands have different sizing standards. Smaller frames or sizes may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, so the best idea is to refer to that brand’s sizing guidelines. Click Here for Trek Mountain Bike Sizing .

How important is bike standover height and the top tubes?

Another sizing consideration is the standover height. A bike’s standover height refers to the length of the top tube to the ground and most commonly included within sizing information. This is important and also can lead to a better fit.

A standover height that’s too great can risk injury, while a too short height can leave you feeling cramped. For straight handlebars, I recommend an inch to two inches of clearance

. This provides a good fit and proper visibility. A sign a bike is too small is if you’re sitting on the bike and easily able to touch the ground with your feet.

Is a 27.5 or 29er tire better for a trail bike?

For the tire size, your most common options are a 27.5 vs a 29er. Both are fine, but I mean more towards a 29er for a trail bike. A 27.5 tire is generally more efficient at accelerating, but a 29er is going to provide a bit more traction and control.

But size isn’t the only factor in finding the best tire type. A dual compound improves durability. You’ll want a tread pattern that offers grip and traction for turning corners and some sidewall support. Puncture resistance is ideal for trail riding too.

What material is best for trail cycling?

You’ll have an option of aluminum, carbon, steel, and titanium for most mountain bikes. Of these, I’d recommend carbon the most for a trail bike. While titanium is a bit smoother and lasts just as long, it does get quite pricey, and may not be necessary for a trail bike.

Carbon is lightweight and, unlike steel, not prone to corrosion. Aluminum is attractive for being lightweight and budget-friendly– but I’d prefer aluminum for something like a road bike, as it’s more prone to damage.

How many gears should a trail bike have?

Considering that mountain bikes can have up to 40 gears, it can feel like you need as many gears as possible, but that’s not the case. For a solid trail bike, I recommend around 20-27 gears.

This provides more control and versatility- needed for trail riding– but doesn’t require you to search long and hard and pay top dollar. Aside from the number of gears, also pay attention to the type of gears.

You’ll also have the option between single, double, and triple drivetrains.

Of these, I recommend a double drivetrain. It’s a nice balance for a trail bike. You’ll have situations where you may need more than a single, but you also aren’t using a trail bike the same way you would an enduro bike.

Are disc brakes better on a trail mountain bike?

Between disc brakes and rim brakes, I recommend disc brakes for trail bikes. They’re smoother, more reliable, and less likely to become damaged when riding on trails. Some even consider a bike on a trail without disc brakes to pose safety hazards– I’d consider this feature nonnegotiable.

But you will need to decide between mechanical vs hydraulic brakes. Hydraulic brakes use fluid for stopping power, while mechanical brakes are purely based upon traditional brake chain force. Hydraulic brakes tend to be smoother and more expensive, and they’re quicker to respond.

I prefer hydraulic brakes for a trail bike, especially if you get caught in inclement weather. That doesn’t mean mechanical brakes are bad– they’re just not as efficient.

Is a hardtail mountain bike good for trails?

Full suspension tech is better for a trail bike if you have the money, though you can argue it’s not a must-have. With the full suspension, you’ll get both rear and front shock, equipping the bike with greater traction, steering control and making for a more comfortable ride for bumpy trails

. You’re adding weight and cost, but for many, those trade-offs are well worth it, especially since trail bikes aren’t intended for racing and quick acceleration. With a hardtail, you have a rear shock and a lighter setup. If you opt for a hardtail bike, I recommend sticking to even trails. If you’re doing fairly light trail riding, a hardtail may be just fine.

How much travel do you need for trail riding?

Bike travel is measured to determine the distance from the front or rear suspension that will absorb force. Thus, the greater the travel, the more shock resistance.

Bikes with greater travel may not accelerate as quickly, but they provide a smoother, more controlled ride for uneven trails. 100mm is the minimum I’d go, but 120mm to 130mm is a great range.

Above 140mm isn’t necessary for a general suspension trail bike.

How much is a trail bike?

How much is a trail bike?

As you can imagine, the price of a trail bike ranges depending on materials, construction and brand. Trail bikes are more expensive than road bikes, but they’re also less expensive than something like an enduro bike.

You’re unlikely to find a trail bike that quality features for under $1,500, but spending a bit more leaves room for some great upgrades.

Are dropper seatposts worth it?

Dropper posts are sometimes used for mountain bikes to provide greater adjustments than your Seatpost. This can provide greater visibility and comfort, and for some avid cyclists, it’s worth it. However, for a trail mountain bike, it’s not usually necessary.

How do I choose the right mountain trail bike seat?

There is no perfect saddle for a trail bike seat, as we all have different bodies and different personal preferences. There are three general categories for mountain bike saddles: performance, racing, and recreation.

Since trail bikes aren’t used for racing, opt for a recreation saddle, or a performance saddle if you like a little versatility. You’ll want some cushioning and shock absorption, with gel offering the best cushioning and foam second.

A synthetic material like nylon that’s weather-resistant is wise for a trail bike. A center cut-out will provide a lighter profile and some breathability. Still, a saddle without a cut-out has more overall cushioning.

What is Trek known for?

Now that you know my criteria for finding the best trail bike, I want to examine Trek as a brand. If you’ve considered buying a mountain bike before, chances are you’ve heard the Trek name, and for a good reason. Trek is one of the most popular makes for mountain bikes of all kinds.

Trek is also known for its wide selection of entry-level bikes, which some competing brands don’t offer to the same extent. That is of course tied to the fact that Trek is the largest US-based cycling company. The Roth Distributing Company owns Trek.

Where are Treks made?

Up until 2017, Trek bikes were all manufactured and shipped from Waterloo, Wisconsin. Now they outsource some of their manufacturing to Asian countries, so none of their bikes are fully made in the United States.

Is Trek a good movie?

Trek retains its reputation as a solid brand for entry-level and more specialized mountain bikes. One way they’ve done so is by staying on top of new biking technologies while still offering bikes at an accessible range of prices. Their diverse inventory and willingness to improvise both highlights why Trek bikes remain well regarded and popular.

How long does a Trek bike last?

Trek bikes don’t all last the same time because that depends on the materials used and how heavily the bike is used. There’s so much variability– for all brands– for these and other factors that it can be difficult to estimate.

While most Trek bikes are well made, you’re not guaranteed that a bike will last a certain length of time. Regular bike maintenance is critical for whatever model you purchase.

Is the Trek Fuel Ex 5 Worth It?

Trek Fuel Ex 5

Trek Fuel Ex 5 is a striking but approachable bike, marketed as a high-value and high-performing option. With a dropper post and other great features, is it all hype or worth your money?

What type of bike is the Fuel Ex 5?

The Fuel Ex 5 is a mountain trail bike equipped with a blend of higher-end and accessible materials and features. It’s touted as a gateway to a mountain bike. The wording makes me think that the Fuel Ex 5 is trying to cater to those new to mountain or trail biking, or perhaps those who want great features but not at an eye-watering price point.

How much does a Trek Fuel Ex 5 cost?

Still, the price is higher than some trail bikes by a good $1,000, so it’s important to investigate every feature offered. Prices are subject to change and vary based upon your make and specifications. Still, you’re looking at spending roughly $2,500 as of the end of 2021/ early 2022.

What material is the Trek Fuel Ex 5 made out of?

The Trek Fuel Ex 5 features a lightweight aluminum frame, which surprised me for a few reasons. For one, at the price point, I expected perhaps a carbon fiber frame. But it also is a little heavy for its make.

Aluminum isn’t a terrible choice if you’re starting suspension trail riding. It is reasonable for moderate trails– but it can dent and become damaged by impact and debris. I do appreciate that aluminum won’t easily rust.

How much does a Trek Fuel Ex 5 weigh?

The Trek Fuel Ex 5 comes in at 34 pounds and 6 ounces for medium frame size. This is interesting because the average weight for a full suspension trail bike with an aluminum body is between 29 and 33 pounds.

This makes the Trek Fuel Ex 5 a bit heavy for what you’d expect, especially considering it’s not a full-suspension bike. I would argue this isn’t the biggest problem for a trail bike, but it still should be noted.

Your ride will feel a little less springy than you might expect from an aluminum body.

How much travel does a Trek Fuel Ex 5 have?

Here’s where the Trek Fuel Ex 5 shines: the travel. You get an impressive 140mm of travel, providing a smoother and more controlled ride. This is generous for a general trail bike, and an advantage over some competing bikes.

Does the Trek Fuel Ex 5 have a dropper post?

The Trek Fuel Ex 5 likewise has a dropper post. By opting for a dropper post, you’re getting more versatility out of your seat positioning, as well as offering a slight advantage for visibility. While not a must-have, it’s a nice feature to have if you know how to use it effectively.

What kind of drivetrain does the Trek Fuel Ex 5 have?

drivetrain

Trek Fuel Ex 5 has a Shimano 1×12 drivetrain. You’re getting 12 gear speeds and a single cassette. The 12 gears are sufficient for a trail bike for moderate trails, even if it’s not as generous as some models.

Shimano is a respectable brand and usually makes quality products. Their 12-speed drivetrain provides a stable and clean stop with new Hyperglide technology that’s meant to improve the single drivetrain experience.

For a single drivetrain, it’s a solid option, but I do wish they added a double drivetrain.

What type of brakes does Trek Fuel Ex 5 have?

type of brakes of Trek Fuel Ex 5

Hydraulic disc brakes are used for this model, which is a great upgrade for a mountain trail bike. The breaks are also manufactured by Shimano, which is another plus.

Is the saddle comfortable on the Trek Fuel Ex 5?

saddle is comfortable on the Trek Fuel Ex 5

The saddle is a Bontrager Arvada . This is a performance saddle seen on both road and trail bikes and is made with microfiber. Microfiber is known to be lightweight and fairly durable. While it’s not fully weather-resistant, it can repel water.

The rail is made out of steel, which is strong but also can corrode over time. The cut-out is designed for pelvic rotation and is focused on balancing comfort and efficiency.

It’s a reasonable saddle choice– not a stand-out, but suitable for regular trail riding.

Bontrager Arvada Comp Bike Saddle | Trek Bikes

Arvada Comp adds comfort and reduces soft-tissue pressure by creating a strategic cut-out in the saddle shell.

What are the tires like for Trek Fuel Ex 5?

tires

The tires are a  27.5” Bontrager XR4 Comp , with a 30 TPI. The size is designed a little more for acceleration than traction. 30 threads per inch for the tire is on the low end. Utility tires are around 15 tpi, while the high end may be 120 TPI.

For general trail riding, you want a tire that falls between 60 and 120 TPI, and it is always a trade-off and balance. The highest tapis has less rolling resistance, while the lower end is less likely to puncture.

If you do buy the Trek Fuel Ex 5, you may want to consider if you can swap out the tires for a bit higher tpi.

Bontrager XR4 Team Issue TLR MTB Tire | Trek Bikes

The XR4 Team Issue TLR tire offers incredible grip and fast-rolling efficiency in a new and improved tread pattern with 120 TPI casing. Save yourself from punctures with our Inner Strength sub-tread protection while squeezing out every bit of cornering traction with the 61a/50a dual-compound rubber.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answer: This depends on the model you’re considering. If you look at a newer model of both, you’ll be getting a carbon body with either bike. They also both feature full suspension for a general mountain bike. The main difference is that the Trek Fuel Ex 9.7 and the Top Fuel 9.7 are in the wheels, travel, and gear capabilities. The Top Fuel comes with either 27.5 or 29ers, while the Top Fuel Ex has 29ers and more gear capabilities. The Ex is better for a trail bike, while the Fuel could be argued for as an XC bike.

Answer: Ther Trek Fuel EX 9.8 features a carbon frame and weighs 28.94 pounds for a medium frame.

Answer: This Trek model is a versatile trail bike with a platinum aluminum frame and 150mm travel. It weighs 31.92 pounds for a medium frame.

Final Thoughts

The Trek Fuel Ex 5 has some great features going for it: hydraulic brakes, a dropper post, impressive travel, a respectable saddle, and well-designed gears. It is a bit limiting in other ways.

For example, an aluminum body frame but a heavier than average weight and low TPI tires make this bike a bit mixed in terms of features. It’s a decent bike for general light to moderate trail, and what’s here is mostly well done– I do wish it was a little cheaper.

Trek Top Fuel vs Gen5 Fuel Ex

  • Add to quote

We’re loving the TF but haven’t ridden the FEX, so no comparison here. It feels very quick but stable. One is likely a slightly better climber and the other a slightly better descender. Your best choice depends on riding style and priorities. There’s probably a two-pound weight penalty for the extra travel, so consider which matters more to her. A skilled rider will love both and outride me on either model. Recently a guy on the Sig Sauer forum replied to a post asking which pistol of two similar models was more accurate by saying all of mine are more accurate than I can shoot.

The new Top Fuel actually weighs .88lbs more when comparing the aluminum models. TF8 vs EX8 Thanks for sharing your info on your bike.

I own both. The TF's pedaling is quite a bit more lively or snappy. The FEX is a bit smoother. For me, the snappy pedaling trumps the smoothness factor. Note that I set my TF up with a 130 mm fork right out of the gate, and I believe all 2023 TFs are coming that way stock. I believe frame weights are darn near identical.

I’m hoping they will release a 2023 TF8 that is 130. Right now you have to get a 9.8 or higher to get a stock 130. Thanks for posting your perspective

trek fuel ex 5 opiniones

I don’t understand why they are suddenly putting 130mm forks on the TF, what was wrong with 120mm ?

The 44mm offset on new forks messed up the geo so they had to go longer to compensate?

I owned the previous gen TF (2020 115/120mm) actually traded it for a Gen 5 just to switch up and make the overall stable a little more versatile. Wasn't riding the TF since I had purchased a new Ripley. I originally didn't think keep the Fuel around long but every time I ride it don't want to get rid of it. In General it is a question of what is more important, some versatility lots of speed, more versatility but more forgiving and comfort. Some info for consideration: I think the Fuel EX (gen 5) gets a bad online rep. Based on limited reviews versus rep from riders who own and ride one. It is definitely a pure do it all trail bike. Jack of all Master of none. It wont pedal like a short travel bike, it wont descend like a long travel slacked out bike. It will be versatile and keep your riding through any real trail system. Has active rear suspension for tech climbing and plowing through the trail and is plenty firm if you have a shock with compression adjustment switch. If you want short travel firm pedaling bike that can still descend and speed is the most important factor for you TF. If you want a more pure trail bike where steady all day long efforts still reward hard pedaling but comes at expense of slower climbing but more forgiving bike than Fuel. I would also argue I bet can find deals on the old Fuel EX or great deal used as everyone is liquored up on the new Fuel Gen 6 which IMO is just a totally different bike.

What you end up getting? I'm looking at the TF8 or FEX8 Gen 5 too. And to throw in a little wallet creep the TF9.7. I like the 9.7 but afraid at 210 lbs I'd fall on it a break some carbon. Like the TF8 has the threaded BB. Did some short test rides of both on pavement, rough grass and on and off curbs. I like the quicker steering of the TF. FEX is a little cushier. My current ride is an old cobbled together bike with a Performancebike frame and 60mm travel Tora. I have not broke it like the 5 Raleigh warranty frames before. So 120mm travel looks like a downhill bike to me.

Bikes have gotten heavier. May be the creep of suspension travel or I hope ruggedness. InN 2018 the Slash still had more travel. More than I'm looking for.

So what ya get. I’m still on the fence. Bumped my Tora fork to 225 psi (the correct pressure) and added a PNW Coastal dropper to my 26er hard tail. A little compliance (40mm) in the post helps.

I have a the fuel ex 8.9 and have really enjoyed the bike. Great geometry and reliable components. However a bit heavy for true xc riding and more travel than most really need. TF has my interest.

Tough choice. I came close to a TF 9.7. Chickened out and went aluminum. Changing from 2.6 tires to 2.4 or narrower tires and lighter wheels will lighten it. Oh I have some GR1 35 mm tires on my stick Domane wheels. Wonder how they would fit on the Fuel EX wheels. I think if I want something more XC I’ll get a Super Caliber. N+1.

Is Trek Fuel EX 5 Worth Buying? [Trek Fuel EX 5 Review]

Table of Contents

Trek Fuel EX 5

  • Price: $2,699.99
  • Frame: Alpha Platinum Aluminum
  • Tires: 29×2.60″/27.5×2.60”

What we love about it: A full-suspension high-performance mountain bike that can resist all kinds of trail obstacles.

What we don’t like about it: The relatively low price makes some compromises in the performance of the components, and the heavier body weight makes climbing a little slow.

Rating: (4.7/5)

Trek Fuel EX 5

Cycling is very popular, as we can see now, and mountain biking is an adrenaline rush in cycling, so cycling is very popular.

Therefore, we reviewed the Trek Fuel EX 5. During the three-month evaluation, I not only experienced the feeling of adrenaline rushing, but also experienced enough security that the Trek Fuel EX 5 gave me. Needless to say, I am overwhelmed by the charm of the Trek Fuel EX 5, and I would like to be the Trek Fuel EX 5’s mountain off-road comrade-in-arms.

Below is our breakdown of the Trek Fuel EX 5 for climbing and trail riding, key features, components, and specs, as well as previous editions of the series.

If you want to know more, check out our review column.

What is Bike Climbing? Is the difficulty of climbing a bicycle the same as that of climbing a mountain? I think this simplified understanding is possible, but what we should pay attention to is that the climbing of mountain bikes is not only affected by the bicycle itself but also related to the terrain. The Trek Fuel EX 5 is a full-suspension bike, and in fact, we were a little apprehensive about its climbing (you really can’t ask for much from a mountain bike under $2800). But I found we were wrong.

At the beginning, we were in the nearby countryside, and as soon as we looked up, we saw a yellow rocky mountain to the northwest, and the reviewers and I decided to challenge this rocky mountain.

Trek Fuel EX 5

Maybe I’m used to hardtail mountain bikes, and the gravel trails always take me out of the saddle a little bit. Technical climbs inevitably involve enough difficult gravel and roots.

The wet clay of the woodlands not only made my ascents extremely difficult, but I failed on the first ascent. I also had to do it all over again from the bottom, the second time I adjusted the fork, and this time I didn’t feel too hard on the climb, although it wasn’t as fast as I thought it would be.

The rocky trails are steeper, and the Shimano Deore 1×12 drivetrain is as efficient as I’ve ever ridden on a hardtail. The second time I used the lowest gear, the 10T pinion and 27.5×2.60″ tires did not have much difficulty on such a hilltop.

Without thinking too much about the impact of X-Fusion on the whole process, it just feels like such a climb is a certain challenge for the Trek Fuel EX 5.

Brief Summary

On the one hand, the tires played a big role in the climbing process. On the other hand, it is undeniable that the Trek Fuel EX 5 platinum aluminum frame offset a lot of vibration during the climbing process.

More importantly, the Trek Fuel EX 5’s shock-absorbing fork and rear fork provided just the right amount of shock during the second half of the ride, allowing me to maintain stable control during the climb, and I was able to maintain a good amount of control. Step on the pedals without any scruples, without worrying about other things.

If you choose a difficult climb on the mountain, we still recommend starting at the other end of the mountain, as the longer climbs and not the steep ones will make it easier for you to enjoy the process.

In most cases, mountain bikes under $2800 probably won’t have as much climbing performance, but the Trek Fuel 5 EX is a real differentiator for me, and it gives me a better impression of a low-priced mountain bike.

Forest Road Cycling

Trek Fuel EX 5

I have to say, if it weren’t for the Trek Fuel EX 5’s outstanding climbing performance, I’m afraid I wouldn’t have such high expectations for its forest-to-road riding.

We took the Trek Fuel 5 EX for a review on the woods trails. The trail is rugged and slippery, with no end in sight. As far as this trail goes, even though I’m a little scared, I’m still pretty confident in the Trek Fuel 5 EX, and the results really didn’t exceed my expectations.

Even in the face of sharp turns, the Trek Fuel EX5 overcomes this hurdle with its nimble steering. When I rode quickly on slippery ground, the tires still gripped the ground tightly, maintaining steady forward momentum. The grip of the Trek Fuel EX5 tires really amazes me.

For a more comprehensive review, we also came to another forest trail, the narrow trail only allows one bike to ride and can be called forest singletrack.

Not only that, because of the season, the trail is almost all fallen leaves, and the scenery is beautiful, but it was another great challenge for my riding.

Unexpectedly, the aggressive tires directly turned the Trek Fuel EX5 into a shredder, and the Trek Fuel EX5 still maintained a steady ride speed. Trek Fuel EX5 shock absorbers effectively absorb shocks in the ups and downs encountered during the forward process.

Main Feature

Trek Fuel EX 5 Frame

The Trek Fuel EX 5 we reviewed was available in two paint colors, Lithium Grey and Matte Dnister Black. I like both paint colors better, but I wish there were more options as I do review quite a few bikes.

Additionally, the Trek Fuel EX 5 uses an Alpha Platinum Aluminum frame, which is a very affordable frame that is relatively cheap, but has plenty of strength.

Not to mention the Straight Shot that Trek’s frame designers designed for the Trek Fuel EX 5. In addition, the Straight Shot design not only optimizes the stiffness-to-weight ratio, but also achieves a more responsive ride in this way.

If riding conditions get bad, you can protect your bike from injury with the Knock Block.

The reason the Knock Block protects the bike is that the Knock Block is an integrated frame guard system that prevents the handlebar lever from rotating into the top tube and preventing the cable tube from being pulled out.

The Trek Fuel EX 5’s Control Freak cable management came naturally when we looked at the frame. Control Freak is an excellent cable management system that runs any combination of shift, brake, lockout, and dropper post lines through the frame, giving us the Trek Fuel 5 EX very neat and clean.

On top of that, the Fuel EX 5 Trek has a very thoughtfully designed smaller (XS and S) frame with a top tube that slopes down as it approaches the seat tube. This design effectively reduces standover height, which is beneficial for short-stature riders.

Because it makes it easier for them to straddle the bike, it really boosts my preference for the Trek Fuel EX 5 for a rider like me who is under 5’4″.

In fact, we found the overall frame of the Trek Fuel EX5 to take the shape of an obtuse triangle. Not only that, but when we measured the seat tube angle (67.5° in size M) and the head tube angle (66° in size M), there was very little difference in the size of the angle. The seat tube and head tube are almost parallel, which makes me want to ride the Fuel EX 5 Trek more to experience the experience.

After my 3-hour ride on city roads, I found that the slack head angle slowed down my steering response. But have to say, it makes it easier for me when I get downhill. The looser seat tube angle allows me to easily lift the front of my Trek Fuel EX5 and keep it moving forward, which really surprised me.

Do you think that’s it? No, Fuel EX 5 Trek also adds MinoLink configuration, MinoLink can adjust the geometry and just need you to turn the nut to fine-tune the head tube angle. BB height can be fine-tuned by up to 10mm without negatively impacting suspension performance. Don’t underestimate this 10mm, the height of the BB determines the height of your center of gravity. Whether it is climbing or descending, the height of the center of gravity will affect the stability of your riding.

Of course, we also measured the Chainstay length. The shorter Chainstay length (43.7cm) puts the rider’s center of gravity back, which makes it easier for the bike to lift the front end, making it easier for technical riding. In my opinion, I think the geometric design of the Trek Fuel EX5 is very technical and stylish.

Components and Specifications

Shimano deore m6100 1×12 drivetrain.

Shimano Deore M6100 1×12 Drivetrain

Generally speaking, there are few full-suspension mountain bikes like the Trek Fuel EX 5 at this price. While it’s excellent in frame and geometry for this price range, the Trek Fuel EX 5 hasn’t ditched its drivetrain for this.

The first thing we saw was the Trek Fuel EX 5’s Shimano Deore M6100 1×12 drivetrain, and the Deore 12-speed rear derailleur was pretty impressive considering its price in the Shimano hierarchy.

It still has the Shadow RD+ clutch mechanism for improved chain retention and shifting precision. So when I was on a natural road ride I noticed that the Shimano Deore M6100 1×’s drivetrain was easier and smoother to shift than the 2× I’ve ridden before.

Not only that, but it also has a 12-speed option, which I think is adequate even for off-road riding, or urban riding.

Shimano Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Trek Fuel EX 5 Brakes

Of all the bikes I’ve ridden, the Shimano series has the most braking, but there’s no denying that Shimano hydraulic discs have their own.

Since our review of the Trek Fuel EX 5 is very comprehensive, I rode the Trek Fuel EX 5 over a variety of terrains, but it was a thrilling ride within three months of this review.

That time we did a forest road ride, but it was a very challenging and technical trail. When I started riding, I saw with my own eyes an unfamiliar rider whose face was in direct contact with the ground of the forest road as he descended. When we went over to help, we found his mouth full of dirt, thankfully, no major problems.

So my heart went out to my throat on this ride, but we did this review anyway, and the Trek Fuel EX 5 didn’t hurt me, and it braked even when I encountered sharp turns and slippery roads. The heat still held me and the tires firmly so I didn’t fly out.

I would also like to talk about the ABP function of Trek Fuel EX 5. It plays an important role. It saves me a lot of effort when controlling the bike, and it almost makes me feel the realm of human and vehicle integration.

If you’re serious about safe braking, you can really try the Trek Fuel EX 5.

Trek Fuel EX 5 Tire

Another interesting thing about the Trek Fuel EX5 is its tires. Its 29×2.6” tires are, in my opinion, the absolute king (in this price range) when it comes to climbing or descending. Whether it’s muddy country trails or rocky singletrack, there’s super grip and traction to keep you firmly in your saddle.

Not only that, but the bumps on the tire surface not only play a good role in traction, but also have a good shock absorption effect. Still, some would argue that the Trek Fuel EX5’s large tires would have trouble riding on smooth and flat city roads.

But my rides told me otherwise, the Trek Fuel EX 5 maintained its charm even in the city. The Trek Fuel EX5 27.5×2.6” tires have more flexible steering, and while it may not be as fast as a professional road bike, I think the Trek Fuel EX5 is an absolute value for money.

TranzX JD-YSP18 Dropper

TranzX JD-YSP18 Dropper

Although the Trek Fuel EX5 is not expensive, its configuration is very complete. The Trek Fuel EX5 also features a TranzX JD-YSP18 dropper post.

The TranzX JD-YSP18 dropper post is equipped with a pneumatic drive, which allows me to freely adjust my seat position even when facing uphill or downhill terrain or even rolling trails.

Not only that, but the thoughtful design of its invisible internal wiring and the simple-looking remote-controlled dropper are even more praiseworthy.

RockShox Fork

Trek Fuel EX 5 Fork

Based on the professionalism of our review, one more word must be said about the Trek Fuel EX 5 fork.

When I’m riding on the road, I want to get a fast-paced experience on the road. At this time, the shock absorption function of the front fork will consume my power. So the fork lockout feature set by the Fuel EX 5 Trek solves such a problem.

When I locked the fork, I even caught up with the car in front when I hit a downhill on a flat road ride. If you are riding on a flat park trail, the suspension front fork can effectively absorb the shock at this time, allowing you to ride comfortably and feel the fun of riding in the park.

Not only are SoloAir springs lighter, but they also protect the rider’s wrists during high-speed rides and can be easily adjusted to fit a specific rider’s weight. All in all, I’m already looking forward to riding the Trek Fuel EX5 again.

Rear Suspension

Trek Fuel EX 5 Rear Suspension

The Fuel EX 5 is a full-suspension bike, and its rear suspension is just as important. The 130mm rear suspension does a great job of slowing down big mounds when jumping. Not only that, but when I was riding rough mountain trails, the rear suspension gave me effective traction when making turns, making it more comfortable and easier to turn.

Previous Versions of The Trek Fuel EX 5

2020 Trek Fuel EX 5

First introduced in 2007, the Trek Fuel EX5 has gone through several iterations. We found the Trek Fuel EX5 in Trek’s database to compare it with the latest model.

The price has increased by $600, but the transmission system has been greatly improved, from 1X10 to 1X12. Wider gear range. Good news for riders who like technical climbing.

2019 Trek Fuel EX 5 29

We reviewed the Trek Fuel EX5 over a three-month ride. Its Shimano Deore M6100 powertrain and Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, fork, and dropper post cost less than $3000. There is hardly anything in the range that makes us dissatisfied. I even think it’s the champion among them.

In fact, there are many versions of the Trek Fuel EX series. If you want to pursue higher component combinations, we have also made an in-depth review of the Trek Fuel EX7. Its price is around $3500, you can refer to our review.

What do we like about it?

1. Better at forest road riding, the design of a full shock absorber can enjoy the stimulation of riding more.

2. Internal wiring makes the bike look more concise and elegant.

3. In this price range, Trek Fuel EX5 is more value for money.

4. The neat and aerodynamic geometry can easily perform the technique of lifting the front wheel during riding.

What do we not like about it?

1. Some people think that the selectivity of car paint is too small.

2. The remote control dropper is not advanced enough, I hope it can be improved.

  • What is the powertrain of the Trek Fuel EX 5?

The powertrain for the Trek Fuel EX 5 is a Shimano Deore M61001×12 drivetrain.

  • What material is the frame of the Trek Fuel EX 5?

The frame of the Fuel EX 5 Trek is Alpha Platinum Aluminum.

  • What is the largest tire size for the Trek Fuel 5 EX?

The largest tire size for the Trek Fuel EX 5 is 29×2.60″.

Trek Fuel EX 5 Specs

Comparison Chart

Trek fuel ex 5 vs fluid fs a4.

2023 Norco Fluid FS A4

We can learn that the Trek Fuel EX 5 and the Fluid FS A4 are about the same price. But when we rode it, the TTrek Fuel 5 EX’s aluminum frame felt lighter and easier to handle. The Fluid FS A4 6061 alloy is relatively heavier and a little sluggish on technical road riding.

Not only that, but the Fluid FS A4 has fewer speed choices than the Trek Fuel EX 5, and I felt the Trek Fuel EX 5 had smoother shifting while riding.

Also, for braking, I prefer the Trek Fuel EX 5’s Shimano hydraulic discs, which give me a stable ride in all conditions. If the price is the same, why not choose one that suits you better?

Trek Fuel EX 5 vs Cannondale Habit 5

Cannondale Habit 5

The Cannondale Habit 5 costs $2,525, which is really not that high for a full-suspension bike, or even cheaper.

But for me, it just wasn’t enough for my riding needs, and the Cannondale Habit5’s Tektro M275 hydraulic discs took a toll on my tires when braking hard. Probably because of my tires, but I’m still disappointed with the Cannondale Habit5.

That’s where I have to mention the Trek Fuel EX 5, which is only slightly more expensive than the Cannondale Habit 5. Both its brakes and its speed options are superior, not to mention some of the thoughtful components of the Trek Fuel EX 5. For example, the Trek Fuel EX 5’s ABP feature.

If you want a great-value bike, why not give it a try?

Trek Fuel EX 5 vs EX7

2023 Trek Fuel EX 7

The Trek Fuel EX is the same series as the 7 and 5. There is almost no difference in geometric design between the two, but we can see from the data that the Fuel EX7 is a little lighter.

In addition, the same 1×12 speed, although their transmission system is not the same, but I think they all meet my needs in terms of speed. But the Trek Fuel EX7’s tubeless tires allow the Trek Fuel EX7 to gain more traction.

So if your needs are different, you can choose a bike that suits you according to your actual situation.

But to be honest, I like both of them equally.

Trek Fuel EX 5 vs Trek Roscoe 8

2023 Trek Roscoe 8

The Trek Roscoe 8 is a hardtail bike, and at $2,399.99, its components are excellent.

The first is the lightweight aluminum frame, which is light, and the lockout RockShox 35 Gold fork and SRAM NX Eagle 1×12 drivetrain and other components are good enough for the price.

Still, the design of the Trek Roscoe 8 hardtail makes the bike lighter, but bumps are more noticeable on gravel trails due to the lack of a rear shock. However, the full suspension Trek Fuel EX 5 has no such concerns. In fact, I pay more attention to the shock absorption function of mountain bikes, after all, I will often go on mountain trail riding.

If you need a bike, I recommend that by all means choose the one that suits you better.

2023 Trek Fuel EXe Review | This brand new lightweight e-MTB is the stealthiest we’ve ever tested

The not-so-minor details.

Trek Fuel EXe 9.9 XX1 AXS

https://www.trekbikes.com

$13,999 USD

- The near-silent motor performance - Solid chassis with excellent weight distribution - Great geometry and all-round handling - Supportive suspension offers exceptional control at speed - Sleek frame is low on e-bulk - The 9.8 model is surprisingly well priced

- Highly damped RockShox suspension isn't the plushest - TQ motor can lag - Not as light as some of its competitors - Rear axle lever makes noise while riding - Crankset Q-Factor is very wide

Mick & Wil review the Trek Fuel EXe

Following two years of development, the Trek Fuel EXe launches as a brand new electric mountain bike for 2023. Aiming to straddle the gap between the Rail (Trek’s full-powered, big travel e-MTB) and the regular Fuel EX, the Fuel EXe is built around a unique, never-before-seen motor that is claimed to be one of the quietest and lightest on the market. Along with its slim battery and carbon frame, the Fuel EXe is purported to weigh around 18kg in its lightest configuration, which is a good 5kg lighter than the Rail. That puts it into direct competition with the Specialized Levo SL and Orbea Rise ; two bikes that have had a significant head start in the lightweight e-MTB category. So what exactly does the new Trek Fuel EXe bring to the party? And how does its new motor perform on the trail? We’ve been testing it for the past few weeks to find out!

Watch our Trek Fuel EXe review here:

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

Overall it’s a very clean system, and combined with the compact motor and slim downtube, the Fuel EXe does a remarkable job of not looking like an e-MTB.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

An overview of the Trek Fuel EXe

Whereas the Rail is based upon the Slash enduro bike, the Trek Fuel EXe is essentially an electrified version of the Fuel EX trail bike. It features 29in wheels, though it gets a touch more travel with a 150mm fork and 140mm of rear wheel travel courtesy of the ABP four-bar suspension platform.

OCLV Mountain carbon fibre has been employed to construct the Fuel EXe frame, while a two-piece alloy rocker link drives the rear shock via a trunnion bearing mount. Unlike the regular Fuel EX, Rail and Slash that feature Trek’s proprietary Thru Shaft damper, the Fuel EXe relies on a conventional rear shock.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

The compact TQ motor

Powering the Trek Fuel EXe is a brand new and extremely compact motor that has been developed in collaboration with Bavarian company TQ.

TQ has previously been known for producing the 120Nm monster motor found within the Haibike Flyon. Taking the same patented Harmonic Pin-Ring (HPR) mechanism, those clever Germans have shrunken it right down to create what it believes is the lightest and smallest e-MTB motor on the market.

Comprised of just two moving parts, the HPR drive unit doesn’t require a belt or additional cogs, and it spins at an RPM that is three times lower than a conventional motor. Thanks to its simplified construction, the HPR design is claimed to result in fewer operating frequencies, reducing not only the overall decibels produced by the motor, but also lowering the ‘tonality’ (read: annoyance) of the sound.

Despite its compact form, the German-manufactured HPR50 motor delivers a healthy 50Nm of torque and a peak power output of 300W. TQ claims this motor has the highest torque density on the market, while offering seamless power delivery with virtually no lag.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

It’s bloody light too

According to TQ, the HPR50 motor weighs just 1.85kg. That’s lighter than Specialized’s SL 1.1 motor (1.95kg), Fazua’s Ride 60 motor (2.3kg), Shimano’s EP8 (2.6kg) and Bosch’s Performance CX (2.79kg).

To make the most of its weight advantage, the HPR50 motor is paired to a modest 360Wh battery. This is claimed to weigh 1.83kg, which is notably lighter than the 360Wh battery used in the Orbea Rise (2.2kg), and about the same weight as the Specialized Levo SL’s smaller 320Wh battery (1.8kg). The compact battery allows the downtube to be made much slimmer, which results in further weight savings.

Putting the motor and battery together, here’s how the total system weight compares between the new Fuel EXe and its two main competitors;

  • Trek Fuel EXe (50Nm motor & 360Wh battery) – 3.68kg
  • Specialized Levo SL (35Nm motor & 320Wh battery) – 3.75kg
  • Orbea Rise (60Nm motor & 360Wh battery) – 4.8kg

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

Unlike the Levo SL and the Rise, the Fuel EXe’s battery can be easily removed from the frame without having to drop out the motor. This means you can charge it in the bike, or separately if you don’t have a power point in your shed. Trek claims you can fully charge the battery in just two hours with a fast charger.

Trek will also be offering a 160Wh Range Extender battery that customers can purchase separately for $1,199 AUD. Boosting range by a claimed 40%, the piggyback battery is designed to fit into a standard water bottle cage with the addition of a built-in retention strap for security. Unfortunately the Range Extender battery won’t be available in Australia until late 2022 however.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

Tidy, integrated display

Just like the Specialized Levo and Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay , the Trek Fuel EXe features a display that’s integrated directly into the top tube. This 2in O-LED screen forms the control hub for the bike, with a single button that turns the system on and off. This same button is then used to cycle through four pages that display key metrics including battery status, riding speed, average speed, rider power, motor power, and estimated range. Because of its integrated display, the Fuel EXe doesn’t have room for the Knock Block steering limiter, and so omits it entirely.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

A discreet two button controller sits next to the left-hand grip, allowing you to toggle between the Eco, Mid and High assist settings. Holding the top button also engages the Walk mode, which delivers power to the rear wheel when you’re off the bike and pushing uphill.

Bluetooth and ANT+ capability allows the TQ system to pair with your GPS head unit and mobile phone. Further functions can be unlocked via the Trek Central app, which offers navigation and integration with third party apps. You can use the app to tune the motor’s assistance levels, and it’ll also provide you with tyre and suspension pressure recommendations if you’re using a TireWiz and AirWiz.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

Geometry & mullet capability

Without a bulky motor getting in the way, there are few compromises forced upon the suspension layout and geometry of the Trek Fuel EXe. For example, the chainstay length sits at an impressive 440mm, which is quite short given the 29in rear wheel and 2.5in tyre clearance. Trek has also chosen to stick with conventional Boost hub spacing and a 55mm chainline, so there’s nothing funky in terms of standards.

With the Mino Link flip chip set in the Low position, the Fuel EXe features a 64.7° head angle, a 76.7° seat angle and a 38.5mm BB drop. In the High position those angles steepen by 0.5° and the BB lifts by almost 7mm.

In that same High setting, Trek also states that the Fuel EXe can be run as a mullet with a 27.5in rear wheel. This will affect the motor’s output and 25km/h cutoff point however, as there’s currently no way for users to adjust the rear wheel circumference in the TQ system.

Trek Fuel EXe price & specs

Globally, there will be six Trek Fuel EXe models offered for 2023. Only three of those models will be available in Australia, with prices starting at $9,499 AUD for the Fuel EXe 9.5, and maxing out at $12,999 AUD for the Fuel EXe 9.8 XT.

All Fuel EXe models make use of the same TQ-HPR50 motor, 360Wh battery and OCLV carbon frame. There will be no alloy models for the foreseeable future.

The bike we’ve been testing is the top-end Fuel EXe 9.9 XX1 AXS, which in the States will come with a staggering retail price of $13,999 USD (that’s approximately $20,000 AUD!). It features RockShox Ultimate-level suspension, Bontrager Line Pro carbon wheels, a one-piece RSL carbon bar and stem, a SRAM XX1 AXS drivetrain, Code RSC brakes and a Reverb AXS dropper post. While this model won’t be available in Australia, aside from the wireless bits the spec isn’t drastically different from the 9.8 XT. As usual though, our review won’t be focussing a whole lot on the individual components, but rather the important stuff that’s shared throughout the range; the frame, handling, suspension and drive system.

Noise isn’t everything, but geez it’s nice when you’re on a quiet bike. And in this regard, the Fuel EXe sets a whole new benchmark that we expect other brands will attempt to follow over the coming few years.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

Trek Fuel EXe sizing & fit

Deviating from the regular Fuel EX, which comes in six sizes, the Trek Fuel EXe will only be available in four. To suit our 175-178cm testers we chose the Medium, which features a 452mm reach.

We had few complaints with sizing, though the stock handlebars are comically wide at 820mm. Those were promptly chopped down to a more conventional 780mm width, which proved to be a better fit with the 45mm ‘virtual’ stem length.

While the big diameter seat tube is nice and short, the 150mm dropper post limited our freedom of movement when riding down steep descents and along jump trails. We’d prefer to see a 170-180mm dropper on a bike that’s as capable as this.

Otherwise the Fuel EXe cockpit is a comfortable place to be thanks to the agreeable Bontrager saddle and lock-on grips. The seat tube angle isn’t too steep, with neutral weight distribution that doesn’t put a load of pressure on your hands. There’s plenty of adjustability thanks to the long saddle rails for those who do want to shunt it forward for a more aggressive climbing position.

Where the Fuel EXe definitely feels like an e-MTB is in its Q-Factor. Although the TQ-HPR50 motor is very compact, the fat e*13 carbon crank arms see the pedalling width blow out considerably. We measured the Q-Factor at 195mm, which is wider than any other e-MTB we’ve tested, and around 20mm wider than a regular mountain bike. Many riders will be unfazed by the difference, and indeed the wider stance can improve your overall stability on the bike. However, flat pedal riders will need to be wary when riding through deep ruts, and those with sensitive knees may simply find the Q-Factor to be too wide for comfort.

Suspension setup

The rear shock on the Trek Fuel EXe is designed to be run with 30% sag, a process that’s made easy thanks to the anodised gradients on the RockShox Super Deluxe.

Jose Gonzalez of Trek’s Suspension Lab explained to us that the Fuel EXe does have a slightly lower leverage rate compared to the regular Fuel EX, and the rear shock has been valved with a medium compression tune. The aim here is to provide more support to handle the additional weight of the battery and motor. Because of the greater damping forces generated by the shock, we trended towards having the compression adjusters backed off from the neutral setting. High-speed was set at minus two clicks (fully open) and the low-speed dial was set at minus one click. Rebound was set a couple of clicks faster than halfway to suit our 68-75kg testers.

Up front is the new 2023 RockShox Lyrik that features the new DebonAir+ spring and Charger 3 damper. RockShox recommends an extra 10psi for this fork when it’s fitted to an e-MTB, but we found this pressure to be too high when paired with the highly supportive Charger 3 damper. We ended up running 10psi less than recommended on the chart, set the rebound on the faster side, ran the high-speed compression at minus one click, and set the low-speed adjuster a few clicks lighter than neutral.

Trek Fuel EXe weight

Confirmed weight for our Trek Fuel EXe XX1 AXS test bike is 18.6kg, weighed without pedals and with the tyres set up tubeless.

That’s an impressive weight for a full suspension e-MTB, especially when you factor in the aggressive Bontrager tyres, powerful brakes and piggyback shock. Still, it’s not quite as light as some of its competitors;

  • Specialized Levo SL Expert – 17.84kg
  • Orbea Rise M10 – 18.38kg
  • Trek Fuel EXe XX1 AXS – 18.6kg
  • Specialized Kenevo SL Expert – 19.12kg

When you consider that the Fuel EXe is the only bike in that list with carbon wheels and crank arms, as well as a one-piece cockpit, its weight becomes a little less impressive. Given that the Fuel EXe supposedly has the lightest drive system out of the lot, we suspect some of the additional weight is found in the frame itself. That’s no bad thing, especially if it equates to having a stiffer and more robust chassis.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

What does the Trek Fuel EXe do well?

When riding the Trek Fuel EXe the first thing you notice, or more accurately don’t notice, is just how quiet the TQ-HPR50 motor is. No doubt about it, this is easily the quietest e-MTB we’ve ever ridden.

The overall decibel output is low, and the motor’s pitch is significantly less prominent than other motors we’ve ridden. Rather than droning or whining, the TQ-HPR50 motor emits a more discreet sound that’s a bit like a gentle breeze whistling through the trees. Furthermore, there’s no annoying clacking noise on the descents like you’ll find with the latest Shimano and Bosch drive units. The TQ motor does feature an integrated freewheel that allows the drive wheel to disengage from the cranks to minimise drag, but despite this we couldn’t detect any obvious noise when descending on rocky trails.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

Indeed the motor and chassis are well damped, with very little vibration or rattling present. While riding back-to-back with our Canyon Spectral:ON test bike, which features a cavernous downtube and a Shimano EP8 motor, the difference in trail noise was stark. Noise isn’t everything, but geez it’s nice when you’re on a quiet bike. And in this regard, the Fuel EXe sets a whole new benchmark that we expect other brands will attempt to follow over the coming few years.

Initially the muted motor gave the illusion of providing us with less assistance. This is because the power delivery is less obvious than a louder, whinier motor. However, a glance at our average riding speeds had us soon correcting that illusion.

Of course there’s not as much punch compared to the bigger 85-90Nm motors on the market, which is to be expected. During our standardised range test (more on that below), climbing speeds aboard the Fuel EXe hovered around 14km/h, compared to 18km/h on an EP8-equipped bike. This means you’ll be working harder on the Fuel EXe if all your pals are riding on full-powered e-MTBs.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

Still, if you only ever ride singletrack aboard your e-MTB in the Eco or Trail assist settings, the TQ motor is likely to meet your needs. This will especially be the case for lighter and fitter riders, who will find the 50Nm output to be just about perfect for trail riding.

Well-damped suspension & no-fuss handling

It isn’t just the motor that’s quiet either, with the Trek Fuel EXe delivering a nicely damped ride quality that’s complemented by the distinct lack of any slurping noises from the fork’s new Charger 3 damper.

The carbon chassis feels stout and reliable, with no hint of twisting or excessive flex under load. It somehow manages to achieve this sensation without feeling harsh or pingy, and instead offers an accommodating platform that allows you to push it quite hard without fear of being punished for less calculated line choices.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

The top-notch suspension plays into this beautifully when you’re smashing down rowdy descents. The Lyrik’s mid-stroke is particularly good, offering a heap of support with plenty of big hit damping control that encourages you to let off the brakes when gravity takes over.

While the suspension is good, it’s worth acknowledging that the Fuel EXe is not as plush as the Rail. Along with its lower overall weight, it can’t monster-truck down wide-open terrain like the Rail can.

The Fuel EXe takes the upper hand as the trail gets squigglier though, with less exaggeration required from your handling inputs. The smaller and shorter battery puts less weight up towards the head tube, helping to centralise and lower the bike’s centre of mass. Combined with the stout frame, there’s very little understeer present with the Fuel EXe. Compared to bigger and heavier e-MTBs, it never feels like it’s trying to push wide or ride away from you.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

The excellent handling and weight distribution makes the Fuel EXe an easier bike to ride for less experienced riders. For more advanced pilots, the Fuel EXe delivers a thoroughly involving ride quality. Yes it’s still an 18kg bike, but it’s far more playful than the heavier Rail, with the shorter chainstays helping to encourage front wheel popping shenanigans.

It dips into corners without requiring constant persuasion, and it takes to the air well too, maintaining a steady trajectory without making you feel like you’re an unwilling passenger. There’s a heap of support from the suspension for soaking up ill-timed landings when things do go awry, with the shock’s Hydraulic Bottom Out ramping up the travel in the final 20% of the stroke. While the O-ring indicated we’d used full travel on many occasions, not once were we able to detect it while riding.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

What does it struggle with?

Though the progressive RockShox suspension on the Trek Fuel EXe offers bucketloads of high-speed control, it does feel quite aggressively damped on smaller chatter. This is more so the case with the new Lyrik, which hasn’t amazed us with its small-bump compliance, transmitting more feedback through to our hands.

The fork on our test bike has improved noticeably over the first dozen rides as the seals and bushings have bedded in, and there’s no denying the incredible support and control that the Charger 3 damper brings. However, the Fuel EXe hasn’t exactly delivered a cloud-like ride quality, certainly not compared to the floaty Spectral:ON we’ve been testing alongside it. For this reason, we’d be curious to try out the Fuel EXe 9.7 to see whether its Fox suspension package brings about a more supple ride.

We’ll point out that heavier and more aggressive riders may not encounter the same experience as us. And it has to be said that the damping support does make the Fuel EXe a highly responsive and rewarding bike to ride. Still, those eager for the cushiest ride on the chunkiest of terrain will likely be better served by the Rail.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

Overall we’ve been impressed by the usable and natural-feeling support from the TQ-HPR50 motor. It doesn’t spike or surge, offering a nicely progressive power band that makes it predictable and easy to modulate on tricky climbs. The 25km/h cutoff point is about as seamless it gets, and because the motor is so quiet, it’s difficult to tell when the motor has disengaged from the cranks.

It took us a few rides to get used to though, as it can occasionally lag before the power starts to come on. Spinning a lower gear at a slightly higher cadence seems to be its preferred input, though we’ve not found it to be as adept at responding to rapid changes in RPM compared to some other e-MTB motors.

There are options to tune the TQ motor via the Trek Central app, which allows you to tweak the pedal response, assist factor and the maximum power of each of the three settings. Unfortunately the app hasn’t been available prior to the Fuel EXe’s public launch, so we’re yet to play around with those tuning options. We’ll be exploring more of that functionality over the coming weeks of riding.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

What range can you get with the Trek Fuel EXe?

Depending on the terrain, most of our rides on the Trek Fuel EXe have typically racked up 1,000-1,300m of elevation gain over a distance of 30-38km. We’ve mostly utilised the Mid power setting, which strikes a nice balance for general trail riding.

It’s been mighty helpful having the battery status displayed as a percentage, and the remaining ride time and range estimations have proven to be surprisingly accurate. When you do get down to the final 10% on the battery, the motor’s power output automatically lowers a few notches to help conserve what’s left. It doesn’t totally limp home though, retaining a usable level of support all the way down to 0%. When you have finally cooked the goose, the lack of drag through the TQ motor means it’s not an awful experience to ride the Fuel EXe on human power alone.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

To see how the Fuel EXe’s efficiency compares directly to some of the other e-MTBs we’ve reviewed, we subjected it to our standardised range test. This involves the same rider pedalling up a road climb with a 10% average grade, with the motor set to its most powerful setting, before bombing back down a singletrack descent. The idea is to see how much elevation, and how many laps each bike can rack up on a single charge, while keeping the variables as constant as possible.

Here’s how the Fuel EXe faired in our range test;

  • Norco Sight VLT (Shimano EP8, 900Wh Battery) – 2,478m climbing (12.8 runs)
  • Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay (Dyname 4.0, 720Wh Battery) – 2,108m climbing (10.9 runs)
  • Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 (Bosch Gen 4, 625Wh Battery) – 1,800m climbing (9.3 runs)
  • Canyon Spectral:ON (Shimano EP8, 630Wh Battery) – 1,570m climbing (8 runs)
  • Orbea Rise (Shimano EP8-RS, 360Wh Battery) – 1,388m climbing (7.2 runs)
  • Specialized Levo SL (SL 1.1, 320Wh Battery) – 1,377m climbing (7.1 runs)
  • Trek Fuel EXe (TQ-HPR50, 360Wh Battery) – 1,312m climbing (6.8 runs)
  • Specialized Kenevo SL (SL 1.1, 320Wh Battery) – 1,053m climbing (5.5 runs)

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

As you can tell by those figures, the Fuel EXe managed to achieve considerably more range than the Kenevo SL, and not just because it has a larger capacity battery. The Fuel EXe is also lighter, comes fitted with faster-rolling tyres and features a more efficient suspension platform.

It didn’t get quite as much as the Levo SL however, and there are reasons for that. The 35Nm output of the Levo SL’s motor is naturally less demanding in terms of its fuel requirements, since it delivers a slower average riding speed. This makes the Fuel EXe a noticeably quicker bike on the climbs, which isn’t accounted for in our range test data.

Given the Orbea Rise has the same capacity battery as the Fuel EXe and a more powerful motor on paper, how did it achieve more range? The simple explanation is the tyres. The Rise M10 we tested was fitted with a lighter and much faster rolling Maxxis Dissector and Rekon tyre combo, which likely accounts for the difference.

Of course it’d be possible to get more range out of the Fuel EXe by fitting lower profile tyres, and you can also utilise the lower assist settings to reduce power consumption. Once the Range Extender batteries are available, Fuel EXe owners will have the opportunity to boost range by up to 40%, which will see it get closer to some of those bigger capacity e-MTBs.

Component highs & lows

As mentioned earlier, we won’t be dwelling on the components of our Trek Fuel EXe 9.9 XX1 AXS test bike. And truth be told, there’s not a lot to be said about the ultra high-end build kit that we haven’t discussed before.

We’ve largely ignored the TireWiz and AirWiz gizmos to begin with, partly because we’ve been experimenting with tyre and suspension setup. However, we’ll be delving more into their functionality now that we have access to the Trek Central app that pairs with the sensors to provide live readings and recommendations.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs bontrager se5

It is worth touching on the new Bontrager SE5 tyres, which are spec’d on each Fuel EXe model. These 2.5in wide tyres feature a Minion DHR II-inspired tread pattern and a dual compound mix that combines a firmer 61a rubber in the centre tread, and softer 50a rubber for the cornering blocks. They’re built upon the Core Strength casing, which combines sidewall protection with a sub-tread reinforcement for puncture protection. The result is a solid, durable and well-damped tyre that isn’t overly stiff on the trail, while also feeling predictable across a broad range of surfaces. They’re decent all-rounders, though they aren’t as tacky as a Maxxis 3C compound or a Specialized T9 tyre. If this were our bike, we’d likely be fitting something softer up front for a little more bite.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

There have been some mild annoyances on our test bike, like the rattling thru-axle lever at the rear dropout. Thankfully this lever can be removed, though you do lose its handy 6mm hex key. That didn’t matter too much as the fork’s steerer tube comes loaded with a Bontrager BITS multi-tool inside. The tool can be a bit tricky to remove, and we also found the bits have a habit of coming loose, allowing them to rattle around inside the steerer. Once tightened up, the Fuel EXe returned to its blissfully silent state.

We love how the TQ display sits flush with the top tube, though it’d be nice to see a clock offered on one of the data screens. The option to display cadence would also be useful, especially while getting accustomed to the TQ motor’s output. The controller offers a nice tactile platform with an audible, yet discreet ‘beep’ whenever you switch assist levels. However, accessing the Walk mode requires you to constantly press down the top button with your thumb, which is awkward when you’re holding onto the bars and pushing the bike up a steep and slippery incline.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

Otherwise all the electrics on the Fuel EXe have proven to be totally functional. Being able to easily remove the battery will be a welcome feature for anyone who needs to charge it separately to where the bike is stored, and we like that the main charge port is located high up on the downtube where it’s protected by a thick rubber plug. Internally there’s also an automatic lock built into the main battery’s connector, basically eliminating any chance of the cable coming loose while bouncing down the trail. Sure they’re only small details, but they’re also clear signs of a well-considered design.

Trek Fuel EXe vs Specialized Levo SL vs Orbea Rise

Over the past year we’ve spent a load of time aboard two of the Trek Fuel EXe’s main rivals; the Specialized Levo SL and Orbea Rise. So how do these bikes compare?

Specialized Levo SL

2022 specialized levo sl expert

Specialized launched the Levo SL at the start of 2020, which shows just how far behind Trek and most other brands have been. No, the Levo SL wasn’t the first lightweight e-MTB to hit the market, but it is the bike that has legitimised the category.

The Levo SL is built around the SL 1.1 motor, which you’ll also find in the Kenevo SL and the Creo e-Road bike. This motor dishes out 35Nm of peak torque, making it considerably less powerful compared to the TQ motor in the Fuel EXe. It’s also much noisier, emitting an annoyingly whiny pitch that takes a while for the rider to tune out. However, the SL 1.1 motor does offer more intuitive power delivery, and it’s also better at handling high-cadence pedalling spurts.

In terms of ride quality, the Levo SL delivers noticeably plusher and more active suspension performance, which makes it a comfortable bike to pedal over choppy terrain. It does have 10mm more travel at the rear, though the suspension kinematic and shock tune also feels lighter compared to the Fuel EXe. We have found it easier to bottom out the Levo SL, and the sensation is harsh with the Float DPX2 shock.

2022 specialized levo sl expert

The Levo SL’s handling is nice and lively, though the front-end steering is a little light with the 51mm fork offset, resulting in some twitchiness at speed. In comparison the Fuel EXe feels better balanced across a range of riding speeds thanks to its solid chassis and well-damped suspension. It’s no doubt the more modern bike of the two, making the two year-old Levo SL feel a little outdated.

It also has to be said that the Fuel EXe kills it on value compared to the Levo SL. The Levo SL Expert we tested features a Fox 36 GRIP2 fork and Float DPX2 shock, alloy Roval wheels, a SRAM GX/X01 drivetrain and Code RS brakes. In comparison, the Fuel EXe 9.8 XT gets a similar level of suspension albeit with a Shimano XT groupset, carbon wheels, carbon cranks and a one-piece carbon cockpit. Despite featuring a higher-end spec, the Fuel EXe sells for $2,100 AUD less , making for a far more appealing package.

orbea rise

The Orbea Rise arrived not long after the Levo SL at the tail-end of 2020, though it took a slightly different tact by taking an off-the-shelf Shimano EP8 motor and de-tuning it to reduce the peak torque output to 60Nm. Orbea also developed its own ‘RS’ firmware for the Japanese motor, which aimed to provide a more natural feel to the power delivery while improving efficiency. This was then paired to a smaller 360Wh battery and a gorgeously svelte carbon frame to deliver complete bike weights from as low as 16.2kg.

The more sensibly-spec’d Rise M10 we tested came in at 18.38kg, though it was fitted with lightweight Maxxis tyres that felt somewhat out of place. With more appropriate rubber, the Rise would likely come in at a similar weight to the Fuel EXe.

While value for money from Orbea is better than Specialized, it’s still not as impressive as the Fuel EXe. The Rise M10 comes with blingy Factory Series Fox suspension, a Shimano SLX/XT drivetrain and alloy Race Face wheels, but sells for two grand more than the Fuel EXe 9.8 XT.

orbea rise

On the trail the Rise is a closer match to the Fuel EXe. The geometry is pretty similar, though the Rise chassis doesn’t feel quite as stout when being pushed hard. This also comes down to the steeper head angle (65.5° vs 64.7°), and it’s also due to the suspension, which is marginally more sensitive off-the-top. It delivers terrific traction and a comfortable ride quality, though it’s not as supportive as the Fuel EXe.

Speaking of suspension, we wouldn’t be opposed to seeing both the Rise and Fuel EXe equipped with 150mm of rear travel like the Levo SL. Sure these are lightweight e-MTBs, but travel is travel, and we’re still talking about 18+kg bikes that are capable of going very fast on rough terrain. That said, any increase might see them encroaching too far into the territory of their bigger travel, full-powered siblings (the Wild FS and Rail).

We found there to be terrific power on tap from the Rise’ EP8-RS motor, and the E-Tube app allows you to tweak the acceleration response and assistance character of each setting, depending on how you want the power to come on. The stock tune works mighty well though, with the Rise being an efficient performer that feels natural and intuitive on the trail, with just a fraction more punch available for scaling crux features on a technical climb.

As mentioned earlier, the Shimano EP8 drive unit is much noisier than the Fuel EXe’s TQ motor, which is basically silent in comparison – both on the climbs and on the descents. We also prefer the clean integration of the TQ system, with its bright and easy-to-read top tube display. The standard display on the Rise is a rather austere junction box that features a couple of tiny LEDs. You can upgrade this to the Shimano EM800 display for an additional fee, though it comes with additional wires that add clutter to the cockpit. It’s plenty functional, just not as tidy as the Fuel EXe.

2023 trek fuel exe 9.9 xx1 axs

Flow’s Verdict

The Trek Fuel EXe is a terrific example of just how far e-MTB technology has come. Not only is it a fantastic looking bike that’s low on bulk, it also manages to deliver a load of performance out of an impressively lightweight package.

The unique TQ motor is stunningly quiet, and for many riders its 50Nm output will be ideal. Heavier folks and those chasing maximum power with maximum range will still be better served by the Rail and is full-powered Bosch motor. The Rail also features a plusher ride quality that suits brainless bombing down the roughest descents.

In comparison the Fuel EXe is a more involving bike to ride, and it rewards an active pilot that seeks to work and play with the terrain. It’s responsive and fun to ride on twisty singletrack, with the sort of on-point handling and geometry that we expect we’ll be seeing in the next generation Fuel EX.

While the suspension isn’t buttery smooth over smaller chatter, it does produce a heap of support and incredible control at higher speeds. Along with the stout chassis, the Fuel EXe exhibits a well-damped ride quality that shrugs off the big hits and awkward landings despite not having a tonne of travel.

Indeed for those riders who are looking for that hallowed middle-ground between a regular mountain bike and an e-MTB, the Fuel EXe presents one of the most compelling options to date.

"A world-class trail bike"

"Fuel EX is a beautifully balanced and capable trail bike. The rear suspension is beautiful; as close to ideal as any bike I've ridden. It's sensitive where you want it to be, firm and crisp where it should be. It feels deep and controls big hits very well, and there's a nice platform for pedaling, and to pump and pop off when you're playing."

"Good at pleasing everybody"

"Fuel EX has a few tricks that help it keep a level head when outside of its comfort zone, and to be a cloud on rails when it's in the zone. Everything about the Fuel EX, which was already good at pleasing everybody, is now even better at it."

"An absolute trail rocket"

"Thanks to its burlier components, increased travel, and more aggressive geometry, it has become more of a shredder than ever! More performance, fun, and trail prowess."

"Perfect all-arounder"

"In a world where most new full-suspension mountain bikes are amazing, Fuel EX stands apart as even more than that."

Product features

Will my bike have a curved top tube.

Smaller frames (XS and S) have a top tube that dips down as it approaches the seat tube. This design makes for a lower standover height, which is good for shorter riders because it allows them to straddle their bike more easily. Larger frames (M and up) have a straight top tube because taller riders with longer legs typically don’t have the same issues with standover height.

Active Braking Pivot

Active Braking Pivot allows our engineers to tune how the suspension reacts to acceleration and braking forces independently. That means you get more confident control when you need it most.

Straight Shot w/Knock Block

Trek's Straight Shot frame design optimizes the stiffness-to-weight ratio for a more responsive ride. You'll be able to push harder and stay more planted on your line when the going gets rough.

Shimano Deore

Shimano Deore brings even more adventure with a wider range of gear choices for the steep stuff, the fast stuff, and the fun. With smooth riding, improved chain stability, and sharp shifting, Deore heightens your mountain biking confidence and control so you can focus on the trail and enjoy the ride.

You almost forgot your pedals

This bike doesn’t come with pedals because you'll have a better ride if you choose your own. Explore the pedal guide to find the best pedals for your riding style. Reach for flat pedals for simple versatility or go for clipless MTB pedals if you want control & efficiency.

Suspension Calculator

This suspension calculator will help you optimize your suspension settings for your riding weight. Simply follow the steps to find your best set up.

Mino Link adjustable geometry

Fine tune head tube angle by 1/2° and BB height by up to 10mm with the simple turn of a nut. Just flip the link to choose between slack or slacker geometry, without negatively affecting suspension performance. A Trek exclusive.

Alpha Platinum Aluminum

Our premium lightweight aluminum is continuously cold extruded and butted at multiple points, and hydroformed into sophisticated tube shapes for maximum strength and minimum weight.

Control Freak Cable Management

The lightest, quietest, most versatile cable management system allows any combination of shift, brake, lockout, and dropper post lines to be routed through the frame for clean looks and the ultimate custom setup.

Boost148/110

Wider dropouts (110mm front, 148mm rear) give you the stiffness of a 27.5" wheel with all the benefits of a 29" wheel, and Boost148 in the rear lets you run wider tires and a larger chainring without affecting q-factor and pedaling efficiency.

How tall are you?

To measure your height, stand straight up, barefoot, with your back, heels, shoulders and head all touching a wall. While looking straight ahead, place a book or straight edge on your head and slowly push it against the wall. Your straight edge should be parallel with the floor. Mark the spot where the bottom of the book is touching the wall. The distance from the marked spot to the floor is your height.

What is your inseam?

How to measure: Stand barefoot with your back straight and against a wall. Tuck a ruler or something that extends to the floor between your legs. Using both hands, and keeping it level, pull the ruler up into your crotch as if you were sitting on the saddle. Measure the distance from the top edge of the ruler to the ground to find your inseam measurement. Your inseam is very important to your final bike size so please measure carefully.

  1. Trek Fuel EX 5 Review

Trek makes bikes for the masses, and with the Fuel EX 5, they are offering a quality, versatile trail bike at an accessible price. Of course, $2,100 is still a chunk of change, but in a world where mountain bikes can cost upwards of $10K, we feel this is a great value. This is an excellent entry-level trail bike that would serve a lot of riders ...

  2. 2023 Trek Fuel EX 5 Gen 5 Review

The 2023 Trek Fuel EX 5 Gen 5 is the pinnacle of mountain biking performance with features designed to give riders unprecedented freedom and control on the trail. It features an aluminum frame with light and stiff geometry, as well as a dropper seat post for tackling big climbs, mountain descents, and off-road adventures with ease.

  3. Review: Trek Fuel EX 5 Gen 5

In the rear, there was a X-Fusion Pro 2 shock with "open" and "climb" positions.

  4. 2022 Trek Fuel EX 5

Dec 2022 · Mike Levy. The downtube storage compartment is on the new bike, and while it seems like Trek has put all the things onto the latest Fuel EX, there's one that they didn't: Knock Block. Highs. Wide range of effective geometry adjustments. Just as much fun on smooth trails as it is on scary trails.

  5. 2020 Trek Fuel EX 5

The 2020 Trek Fuel EX 5 is an Trail Aluminium / Alloy mountain bike. It sports 29" and 27.5" wheels, is priced at $2,100 USD, has RockShox suspension and a Shimano drivetrain. 6. Trek Fuel Ex 5 Review and Buying Guide

  7. Opinions on the 2021 Trek Fuel EX 5 : r/MTB

Opinions on the 2021 Trek Fuel EX 5 . I am having trouble finding a used full suspension trail bike in my size. Every one I've come accross so far have been medium frame, but I need a large as I am around to 5'10"-5'11", 170 lbs. An example being a medium frame 2018 Giant Trance 2 that felt a touch too small. I don't want to compromise on size ...

  8. Field Test: Trek Fuel EX

  9. Trek Top Fuel vs Gen5 Fuel Ex

49 posts · Joined 2018. #1 · Oct 5, 2022. The reviews for the new Trek Top Fuel are all very positive. (It's snappy, progressive, ect…) I'm looking at getting my wife a new bike and I have been comparing the Current Top Fuel to the Gen5 Fuel EX. To me they look pretty similar, but I don't remember so many positive comments about the ...

  11. Is Trek Fuel EX 5 Worth Buying? [Trek Fuel EX 5 Review]

While it's excellent in frame and geometry for this price range, the Trek Fuel EX 5 hasn't ditched its drivetrain for this. The first thing we saw was the Trek Fuel EX 5's Shimano Deore M6100 1×12 drivetrain, and the Deore 12-speed rear derailleur was pretty impressive considering its price in the Shimano hierarchy.

  12. Trek Fuel EX 5 2023 Review

  15. 9 Lessons We've Learned About Our 2020 Trek Fuel EX Test Bike

The Fuel EX delivers 130mm of rear travel, though for the 2020 model the Full Floater linkage has gone in favour of a stiffer fixed shock mount and a wider main pivot. Anti-squat increases by around 10%. Compared to previous Fuel EX's we've tested, the new model is much better behaved in the Open mode.

  16. 2023 Trek Fuel EXe Review

  17. What's wrong with Trek Fuel Ex 5? : r/MTB

The Fuel Ex is a great platform, and are super capable bikes but given the 5 is the lowest spec, causes people to look down on it. As you go up the list, you are getting components that are more adjustable (e.g. fork has independent high and low speed compression damping), lighter parts and arguably better performing.

  18. Trek Fuel EX 5 Gen 5 worth it with a big discount? : r/MTB

I have the Fuel EX 5 Gen 5. All the gen 5 bikes have the exact same frame, just the higher end ones have carbon fiber. The only difference are the parts on the bike, which you can upgrade as you see fit. So get the entry level bike like I did, then just start upgrading parts on it as you get better. IMO, right off the bat, go for tubeless tires ...
