How to Subscribe to RSS Feeds in Safari

RSS, also known as Really Simple Syndication, provides a great way to keep up with your favorite websites and skim through the headlines to find the articles. Safari makes it really simple to subscribe to a website's RSS feed in just a few clicks.

1. Open the website you want to subscribe to.

2. Click the RSS icon on the website. The look and placement of the RSS link will differ by site, but here's an example:

3. Click the Sidebar button. This will expand the bookmarks, reading, and shared links menus.

4. Click the @ symbol tab and then click Subscriptions at the bottom.

5. Click Add Feed.

6. Click Done.

iOS: Turn Safari Into a Simple RSS Reader

Full-featured RSS readers are essential to some people, but overkill to many more. Apple’s Safari for iOS has a feature that should fill the void between “No feed reader necessary” and “All kinds of bells and whistles in a feed reader.” Safari for iOS gives us this in a simple, bare-bones feed reader by the moniker “ Shared Links .”

What and where are Shared Links, and how does that turn Safari into a feed reader?

Shared Links is a tab that’s been around since iOS 7, but it used to just support Twitter accounts. Since then, it’s been greatly expanded to support RSS feeds in addition to your Twitter timeline.

All I see there is Twitter. How do I add more Shared Links?

If Add to Shared Links doesn’t appear, try going to an article on that site instead of the home page. The Shared Links option will often appear then. If not, an email to the site’s administrator might be in order. Or, you might have to use a more full-featured feed reader for that particular site. One of our favorites is Reeder .

Does not pick up on relative blog urls

This plug-in works great as long as the URL in the link tag has the full URL of the feed. If it only uses the relative URL (i.e. without the http and domain), it will not pick up on it. Also, seems to have trouble with feeds that use URL parameters &. Fix those 2 issues and the plugin will be good.

Version 1.5.3 should be available in 24-48hr and fixes an issue that is likely the cause of the problem you are encountering with root relative URLs specifically on sites specifying a base URL with the base HTML element. How to Add an RSS Feed Subscription to Safari on Mac

• Open Safari and visit a webpage that has an RSS feed available that you wish to subscribe to (for example, the lovely osxdaily.com )
• Click on the sidebar button to expand the bookmarks and subscription bar
• Select the @ at symbol tab to visit the social section, then click on “Subscriptions” at the bottom

• Choose “Add Feed”

• At the “Subscribe to” popup, select “Add Feed”

That’s all there is to adding RSS feeds to follow in Safari. You can repeat the same process on any website that offers RSS, you’ll find that most blog and news websites offer the subscription service.

Reading RSS Feeds in Safari

To access and read your favorite RSS subscriptions, just open the Safari sidebar again, and then go back to the @ tab. The RSS feeds will automatically populate into the sidebar. Clicking on any of the feed items open the feed item into the accompanying browser window (and yes, it expands to the full article if the RSS feed is excerpt only).

You can also use the Reader function to simplify the appearance of a rendered RSS feed item.

While the Safari RSS feed reader works fine for following a handful of websites, if you’re subscribing to and managing a lot of RSS feeds you’ll likely still want to use a third party app. Two of the best RSS readers in OS X are Vienna and NetNewsWire , try out both and take your pick.

This is a really great feature that at the moment is unique to Safari in OS X, let’s hope it comes to iOS soon too. In the meantime for iPhone and iPad users, you can use the Social Shared Links feature in Safari for iOS to serve a similar function.

Good analysis . I was fascinated by the information , Does someone know if I could find a sample a form document to edit ?

Everything said was actually very reasonable. But, what about this? suppose you composed a catchier post title? I ain’t suggesting your information isn’t solid., however suppose you added a headline that makes people desire more? I mean Subscribe to RSS Feeds in Safari for Mac in OS X El Capitan & Yosemite is kinda boring. You might look at Yahoo’s front page and watch how they create post headlines to grab viewers to open the links. You might add a video or a related pic or two to grab people excited about what you’ve got to say. Just my opinion, it might bring your posts a little livelier.

Hello, is there a way to sort subscriptions (Feeds) by date in Safari 9?

Now they seem to be sorted alphabetically by each subscribed Feed.

Hi I there a way to delete individual RSS post as you read them. I don’t see a delete button

RSS feeds are maintained on the website server you are pulling the RSS feed from, you can not modify a website or servers RSS feed, but when you read one locally it marks it as read in Safari.

Try doing it from within a post rather than the homepage.

Look for a “Subscribe to Newsletter” type of link on websites to see if you can do this, but Safari does not allow it by itself.

Thanks, Sometimes. The more I research, the more I realize I’m out of luck with the latest software. RSS feed subscriptions are back in Safari with Yosemite. Seems we have to look in Shared Links, period, as there’s never a mention of viewing through Mail.

This (more than) frustrated me as well. I had RSS feeds set up in Mail and they’re all just gone with my new laptop running Yosemite.

Is there a way to get an RSS feed to show up in Mail? You could add an RSS feed to Mail using OS X Lion, but now that I’ve upgraded to OS X Yosemite, that feature seems to have disappeared?

I think ReadKit is the best reader for OS X. It was certainly the first and only (for along time) to support synching after Google Reader shut down.

I read this article, thought to give it a try. I opened up the @ tab and found perhaps fifty different websites listed. I don’t know how they got there. And I don’t know how to get rid of them, either. Control-click brings up nothing useful.

Nothing easier! You’ll see a little grey circle with an”x” to the left of each individual feed in your “Subscribed Feeds” list. Just press it to remove the feeds you do not want.

I get my Twitter meesages on the RSS feed in Safari. Also on iOS this feature works.

how i file send to Skype and Facebook my complete album in iphoto ?

This is an article about subscribing to RSS feeds in Safari. As far as I know, Skype and Facebook do not support RSS and they can not be subscribed to that way. Additionally, iPhoto offers access to Photo Streams of an album, but not RSS either.

That is correct, neither Skype nor Facebook support RSS.

How to Follow RSS Feeds in Chrome, Safari and Firefox

Did you know Safari has an RSS reader? Neither did I. It’s one of the neat little features hidden inside Apple’s browser. It’s a nice touch, and very helpful for people interested in using RSS within the browser.

At least on desktop, using RSS within a web browser seems logical. With the demise of Google Reader, though, it’s worth looking at other alternatives. You could always a web service like Feedly, but why not make RSS a part of your browser?

How to Use Safari’s Hidden RSS Reader

Apple hides this feature in Safari with no explanation or pointer explaining that it’s there, so you’d be excused for not knowing about it.

Open up a Safari window and click on the sidebar button at the top.

Click on the “@” icon at the top of the page. This is your “Shared Links” page, which is a fancy term for a way to keep up with your RSS feeds.

To add new feeds, you have to visit the website you’d like to follow. Go to the sidebar under the “@” tab and click on “Subscriptions” at the bottom. Now click “Add Feed.” This will open up a box of possible selections, including the current page if it has an RSS feed.

Click “Add Feed” and “Done” at the bottom of the sidebar and voila! Your browser is now populated with RSS feeds.

How to Use Chrome’s RSS Reader Extension

While Chrome doesn’t have the same built-in functionality as Safari, it does have a rich library of extensions that can do almost anything you need.

RSS Feed Reader is an awesome extension I would highly recommend for Chrome users. It puts a minimalist RSS reader right there next to the omnibar.

The icon shows you how many stories are unread, with options for marking as read or mass-making as read. Clicking stories opens them in a new tab, which is better than Safari’s current-tab approach.

Best of all, all the stuff I just listed can be changed. I greatly prefer stories to open in a new tab when clicking through RSS links, but you may prefer to use the current window. It’s nice to have the option.

How to Use RSS in Firefox

For Firefox, there are plenty of good extensions as well. I liked Brief , a minimalist RSS reader that hooks into your browser. Click on its menu bar icon and it opens up a new tab with RSS feeds.

The experience is more akin to a traditional RSS app that simply operates within a web browser than something redesigned like RSS Feed Reader for Chrome.

Adding feeds is confusing as hell, though. Doesn’t help that the in-extension tutorial doesn’t work. To subscribe to a feed in Brief, here’s what you do:

Visit the feed page you want to add in the browser. Firefox should recognize the page as a live feed. Add it as a live bookmark by pressing “Subscribe Now.”

Now open up Brief by clicking on the menu bar icon. Click “Organize” on the left. Now to to Bookmarks Toolbar on the left navigation. Find the site you saved, right-click it, and select copy.

Go back to “Subscribed Feeds” and paste it into the right-hand side. Close the window. Now you have an RSS feed. Simple, right?

If Brief wasn’t such a decent RSS reader, this confusing setup process would be inexcusable. However, it’s quite nice once you get it going.

Out of all of these, RSS Feed Reader for Chrome impressed the most. It is robust, fast, simple and customizable. It checks every box and isn’t a total pain to set up like Brief.

You could always try to bypass all this RSS extension stuff by using something like Feedly. Feedly syncs your feeds across all platforms and offers browser extensions for all the major browsers.

However, it’s also serving you ads or charging money for a “pro” account. It’s a business in a way different from a homegrown RSS extension.

Whichever option you use, all are good for RSS.

Safari in Mac OSX 10.10 Yosemite is a great browser. I’ve switched from Google Chrome and now use Safari as my browser of choice for every day web usage. That said, Safari is terrible when it comes to handling RSS feeds. There simply is no way to change Safari’s RSS preferences without adding a 3rd party extension.

I remain an RSS loyalist and read (or at least parse) hundreds of feeds on a daily basis. My RSS service of choice is the amazing (and constantly improving) feedbin.com . Feedbin is a web service and not a native Mac application. To add a link to an RSS feed you need to copy it from your browser. Not an easy task with Yosemite’s Safari.

I tested many extensions for Safari before finding the one that solved the problem: RSS Button for Safari . What does it do?

• Adds a button to the Safari toolbar listing feeds on the page you are viewing.
• Automatically select the URL of the feed for easy copy/pasting.

Just as the internet revolutionized communications in the early ’90s, RSS is fundamentally changing the way we receive information. Years ago, before RSS came into its own, we visited websites that published news, posted links, and provided information. We bookmarked our favorite websites and checked them frequently, because there wasn’t any other way to tell when they were updated.

No longer. Thanks to RSS - which stands for Really Simple Syndication - we can receive everything from news and blogs to podcasts and iPhoto pictures without even opening our web browser.

These days, you don’t go to websites - websites come to you. You can tap into the power of RSS immediately - and for free! We’ll show you how.

Don’t Bite the Website that Feeds

To get started, you’ll need to find a website that syndicates its content. Usually, websites syndicate with what’s commonly known as an “RSS Feed.” Feeds are small files that are constantly and consistently updated with a website’s newest content. Where do you find these feeds? Sometimes they’ll appear in the Safari and Firefox address bars. Other times, websites will simply provide an RSS link that says (surprise!) “RSS.” Also watch for the unmistakable orange RSS images.

Once you’ve found a website with a RSS Feed, you’re ready to add it to your RSS reader.

Adding an RSS Feed to Safari

In this tutorial, we’ll add Macinstruct’s RSS Feed to Apple’s freely-available Safari web browser. Remember that this is just an example - you can add any website’s RSS Feed to any RSS reader that tickles your fancy. Here’s how to do it:

Using Apple’s Safari web browser, visit Macinstruct’s homepage .

Click the RSS button in Safari’s address bar.

You’ll be taken to Safari’s built-in RSS reader. What you’ll be looking at is Macinstruct’s RSS Feed - those are our newest articles! To add the feed, click Add Bookmark… in the right-hand sidebar.

Since we want easy access to this RSS Feed, we’re going to add it to our bookmarks bar. You can always always add it as a regular bookmark if you don’t want it on the bookmarks bar. Click Add once you’ve decided on a location.

We’ve successfully added Macinstruct’s RSS Feed to our bookmarks bar. Now, any time Macinstruct publishes a new article, Safari will alert us. Notice in the image below that there’s a (43) next to the collection of Apple RSS Feeds. That means there’s 43 unread articles in there!

Other RSS Readers

Safari isn’t the only game in town when it comes to reading RSS Feeds. There are dozens of RSS readers for Macs - many of which are freely available. If you’re serious about RSS, you need to look into these freeware gems:

Vienna is, in our opinion, the best RSS reader for Macs. This application sports a three-pane interface similar to iTunes, Mail, and other Apple applications. That’s a nice feature, but the best thing about Vienna is its simplicity. It’s an application that everyone can learn in a matter of minutes. We recommend it!

Firefox isn’t technically an RSS reader, but it does a pretty good job of keeping track of RSS Feeds. In fact, it’s almost as good as Safari. Almost.

NetNewsWire is probably the de-facto standard when it comes to Mac RSS readers. Everybody is raving about it, and lots of people are downloading the freeware version. Our opinion? Not bad, but you can probably pass on this one - especially since you have to pay $30 for the full version.

Configuring Safari for an RSS Reader

Safari sports seamless integration with third-party RSS readers. Here’s how to make the switch from Safari’s built-in RSS reader to a third-party application:

From the Safari menu, select Preferences.

Select RSS.

Change the Default RSS Reader to a third-party RSS reader.

Close the Preferences window. Safari will now default to the third-party RSS reader.

The new Safari browser has a very nice RSS reader built right in. For those of you that aren't familiar, RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds are the wave of the future. You can get articles in your inbox, browser, or desktop feed reader without actually having to check every site on your list.

To bookmark an RSS feed, browse to the page you want to get your RSS feed from.  Click on the RSS button on the right side of the address bar.

This will pop up the RSS Feed site on that particular web page. Notice the difference in the RSS icon.

Next, click the  Add (+) button on the navigation bar. Type in the name of the bookmark, choose where you want to save it then click the Add button.

Now go to the bookmark you saved and you can check out the latest articles via RSS!

While RSS fans of years past still mourn the loss of Google Reader, numerous RSS apps have risen in its place. That’s especially true for macOS, where developers have introduced a bevy of dedicated apps since the dismissal of Google Reader. For anyone looking to not be reliant on a web-based RSS reader we take a look at some of the best RSS reader apps for macOS.

1. Reeder 5

Having always been at the forefront of RSS reader apps for macOS, Reeder 5 is a standout option for RSS reading on the Mac. Designed with a minimal interface in mind, Reeder incorporates a wide variety of services such as Feedbin, Feedly, Feed Wrangler and The Old Reader. Reeder also integrates with Instapaper and Pocket for offline reading.

Want a light or dark mode? That’s here too. The option of hiding read articles or starring articles to come back to later is also available. Background refresh ensures that you don’t have to do anything to get NetNewsWire to pull in new articles for you. A built-in Reader view strips out all of the unnecessary web page fluff and helps you focus solely on the articles you want to read. If you ever want to add new news sources on your own, a Safari extension ensures you can do exactly that with just a few clicks.

ReadKit has been around for a long time. ReadKit is similar to its competitors in that it helps you focus solely on what you want to read. Instapaper and Pocket are also accessible so you can add plenty of offline reads for another time. When it comes to reading directly through the app, Smart Folders will help keep you organized. Want dedicated folders for iOS, Mac, Apple TV and Apple Watch? You can set that up with just a few clicks.

Adding to your feeds can be done through a variety of RSS services including Feedly, NewsBlur, Feed Wrangler, Fever and more. If you want to block out the world and focus just on ReadKit, enable “Focus mode,” hide all of your folder columns and go full screen. One of the best aspects of ReadKit is its ability to be customized, as you can tweak font style, height, alignment, line spacing, page width and more. You may never want to touch anything, but knowing you have the option makes ReadKit all the more attractive an option for Mac owners.

Feedly initially started as a web app but now comes with a desktop app for macOS. For RSS beginners, Feedly may be the best option, as it helps you immediately organize subjects including Business, Health, Technology, Sports and more. Start by picking a category that interests you, news or blogs within that category that you’d like to read, and Feedly does the rest.

Beyond its web features, the macOS app adds a few new options including logging in with a Google or Twitter account. Adding new feeds is also much easier on the Mac app. Additionally, Feedly includes its own built-in browser so you don’t have to jump into Safari, Chrome, Edge, Brave, etc. to read.

Feedly is 100 percent free for most users. If you want to add more sources or share via social networks, you can join Feedly Pro for $6 per month.

5. News Explorer

When you want your RSS reader to go beyond RSS, News Explorer can come to the rescue. The clean interface enables the option to add RSS, JSON, Atom and Twitter subscriptions all to one main feed. You can also add in Podcast RSS feeds. Beyond its sources, article lists can include thumbnails that can be adjusted for visibility and alignment so you can customize the app to your liking.

Reader view allows you to read just the full text of articles without any ads or extras. Navigating right to your content feed can be done with a single click. If you want to reply to tweets in the app, you can reply and retweet without leaving the app or opening the browser. Like its other RSS counterparts, Pocket and Instapaper are available for offline reading, or you can share articles via Messages, Facebook or other sharing services.

News Explorer is available for macOS users for $9.99 as a one-time purchase.

Final Thoughts

RSS has long solidified its place as the go-to for news reading. While Feedly is the backbone to just about every RSS Mac app on this list, that doesn’t make it a must-use, as apps like Reeder and ReadKit offer plenty of features on their own. If you don’t want to fork over any cash or prefer open-source options, NetNewsWire is the best option for you. For Linux users, you can check out Tickr .

What happened to RSS subscriptions on Safari on iPhone?

It used to be that you could subscribe to RSS feeds directly within Safari, both on Mac and on iOS, in the form of "saved links" or "subscriptions." Safari for Mac eliminated this capability a few years ago, and now Safari on iPhone and iPad has followed suit with iOS , removing RSS subscriptions from mobile Safari.

While some are probably sad to see RSS subscriptions go, it's likely that Apple is looking to bring parity between all versions of Safari. Given that the browsers on macOS and iOS sync so much, from bookmarks and reading lists to the actual tabs that you have open, it's not surprising that Apple would remove this feature from iOS when it had already done so on the Mac in Safari 11.
