Gavi Eco-Tourism , a project of the Kerala Forest Development Corporation, has caught the attention of tourists for a while now. The project is exclusive in many respects and the majority who visited were nature lovers and adventure tourists. Over a short period of time visitors to Gavi gradually increased, especially after 'Alistair International' the world-acclaimed tourism major listed it among the leading eco-tourism centres and one of the must-see places in India.

A highlight of the Gavi Eco Project is the involvement of the local populace in its activities as guides, gardeners and cooks. This provides livelihood for the locals and also helps to create awareness on the conservation of nature. Gavi, located in Pathanamthitta district offers its visitors activities like trekking, wildlife watching, outdoor camping in specially built tents and night safaris.

The road leading to Gavi is blanketed by tea plantations, which itself is a refreshing experience. En route to Gavi are places of interest like Mundakayyam, Kuttikanam, Peermedu and Vandiperiyar from where the road deviates to Gavi.

Once you reach Gavi the serene eco-lodge 'Green Mansion' awaits you like a mother to embrace you in its protective fold. From the 'Green Mansion', one can savour the spectacular view of the Gavi Lake and the adjoining forests. Besides the accommodation provided in 'Green Mansion' visitors can also try out the tree houses here and can even pitch tents in the wilderness. Here one can have outstanding trekking experiences, which are overseen by trained local people. Those who would love to be left alone can do so in the tranquil environs of Gavi or may even go canoeing in the placid waters of the lake or enjoy a breathtaking sunset. Visitors are usually provided vegetarian food and snacks, which further adds to the eco-friendly ambience of the place.

The place is rich in flora and fauna. There are hills and valleys, tropical forests, sprawling grasslands, sholas, cascading waterfalls and cardamom plantations. Endangered species including the Nilgiri Tahr and Lion-Tailed Macaque are often sighted on the outskirts of Gavi. With more than 260 species of birds including the Great Pied Hornbill, Woodpecker and Kingfishers, Gavi is literally a paradise for birdwatchers.

Some of the breathtaking viewpoints at Gavi like the Valley View offer a spectacular view of the deep ravine and forest below. From Kochu Pampa, a point near Green Mansion eco-lodge, one can track the grazing Nilgiri Tahrs.

The famous pilgrim destination, Sabarimala is a short trek from Gavi. For those interested in observing nocturnal wildlife, night safaris to Kullur, Gavi Pullumedu, Kochu Pampa and Pachakanam provide ample opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Another unique feature of Gavi is camping in the forests. One can pitch a tent in the camping site, which is a rarity in many Indian forests. As dusk stretches into the silence of the night, one can feel the presence of wildlife in the middle of nowhere, an experience that cannot be explained in words. There are also tree-top houses where one can enjoy avian life to the fullest.

The active involvement of tribals in Gavi makes it a unique venture of its kind in the country. Traditional knowledge of the forest and its way of life helps Gavi to sustain its surroundings in its original state.

Gavi is bound to cast its magical spell on every visitor and is surely a place that should not be missed in one's lifetime. Day wise Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival

Gavi Eco Tourism

Gavi is an Eco-Tourism a project of the Kerala Forest Development Corporation located in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. Gavi, located in Pathanamthitta district offers its visitors activities like trekking, wildlife watching, outdoor camping in specially built tents, and night safaris. Distance from Pathanamthitta To Gavi is 109 km 428 mtrs & Travel Time is 2 hour 5 mins By Road. Gavi is 14 km south west of Vandiperiyar, 28 km from Kumily, near Thekkady. Gavi is inside the Ranni reserve forest. Gavi is a part of Seethathode Panchayath in Ranni Taluk. Gavi is part of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, and the route can be covered by car from Vandiperiyar. The entrance fee is 25 rupees per person and 50 rupees per vehicle. Cameras are 25 rupees and video cameras are charged 100 rupees. Both day and night stays are available. Forest tent camping is available from November through March.[citation needed]. It has been said that most enjoyable route to Gavi is the way from Pathanamthitta. The rough journey to Gavi may better be made on a sturdy vehicle like a jeep. Entry passes must be obtained from the Forest Check Post en route at Vallakkadavu. Advance booking with the Kerala Forest Development Corporation Ltd. is highly appreciable wherein such formalities will be taken care of by the company itself.

Gavi tour package: KSRTC continues to wait for forest dept’s approval

Pathanamthitta: KSRTC has been facing a dilemma in connection with the Gavi- Vandiperiyar- Parunthumpara- Vagamon tour package service here. The forest department has not responded to or approved the application submitted by the KSRTC yet. It is learnt that the KSRTC has forwarded the application to the forest department five months ago for operating the tour services from Pathanamthitta.

Officials informed that the Pathanamthitta KSRTC depot has been receiving several enquiries currently about the tour services to Gavi and Vagamon. KSRTC has decided to launch the service by expecting that the Department of Forest will give a nod for the tourist package.

The Forest department officials informed that a decision over the bus service could be taken by the DFO in Ranni. However, KSRTC had submitted requests to the Chief Forest Conservator along with the Divisional Forest Officer. Hence, KSRTC has to obtain permission from the top authority to launch the service, which causes a delay in gaining approval. The controversies concerning forest land management in Gavi may backlash the demand of KSRTC.

KSRTC's plan to improve revenue

KSRTC had decided to charge Rs 700 per passenger for the trip in the forest region. It includes the entry pass worth Rs 100 collected by the forest department. Three ordinary buses with 36 seats were set aside for this tour package. The service which commences from Pathanamthitta at 6 am will return via Mundakayam by night. Daily ordinary KSRTC services to Gavi were deployed mainly for the people residing here. However, the arrival of more tourists has increased the rush in the buses considerably. Hence, special tourist services to Gavi have great demand at present.

Kottayam: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has announced more destinations for its much-popular budget tourism packages.

The new trips would start from the Kottayam depot of the public carrier and an added attraction of these packages is the parking facility available for passengers at the bus station. The tourism trips will be conducted on the following days:

May 21: The destination is Anchuruly and the fare per passenger is Rs 580. The bus will depart at 5.30 am and arrive back in Kottayam depot by 10 pm. The route of the trip covers the dams at Idukki, Cheruthoni and Kulamavu; Calvary Mount; Anchuruly, Vagamon Meadows and Pine Valley.

May 23: The package takes tourists to Sambranikodi and Munroe Thuruthu and ticket charge is Rs 990. Leaving Kottayam at 6 am, the bus will return to the same place by 10 pm. The fare includes expenses for canoeing on the backwaters.

May 26: This trip is Gavi and the fare is Rs 1,650 per person which covers lunch, entry fee and boating charges. The KSRTC bus will start from Kottayam at 5 am and head to Pathanamthitta, from where a 70-km jungle safari starts. Boating is also part of the schedule and after visiting Parunthumpara, the bus will arrive back in Kottayam by 10 pm.

New daily service to Munnar

Meanwhile, the KSRTC has launched a daily regular super-fast service which would be beneficial for tourists to the renowned hill station of Munnar. This service starts from Kollam depot at 4.50 am and takes the Karunagappally, Kayamkulam, Mavelikkara and Thiruvalla route to reach Changanassery bus stand by 6.50 am.

From Changanassery, the super-fast bus covers Thengana, Vakathanam, Puthuppally and Manarcaud. From Manarcaud, the route is along Pala, Thodupuzha, Paingottoor, Oonnukal, Neriyamangalam, Adimali and Anachal. The scheduled arrival time at Munnar is 12.10 pm.

The return trip to Kollam leaves Munnar at 4 pm and taking the same route arrives at Changanassery by 9.25 pm. The bus later reaches Kollam by 11.45 pm.
