19 Best Things to Do in Xian: Touristy Stuff + Local Favourites

Once the starting point for the ancient Silk Road , Xian City is one of China’s most popular places to visit. If you’re looking for things to do in Xian, this guide has you covered.

Located in North-Central China, Xian is the capital of the Shaanxi Province , with a population of around 13 million people. Known as the birthplace of Chinese civilisation, Old Xian City was home to Emperor Qin Shi Huan (founder of the Qin dynasty ), and it was China’s capital city for a total of 13 imperial dynasties.

With thousands of years of history to explore, there are many exciting things to do in Xian. You should definitely consider adding a trip to Xian to your China itinerary.

The Top 10 Things to Do in Xian City

1. your absolute #1 must see in xian – the xian terracotta warriors.

Xi’an’s most famous attraction is the Terracotta Warriors Museum . You’ll need your comfy shoes and a fully charged camera here because you’re in for a long day, with lots of walking and unusual things to see.

If you have a private tour guide , everything will be taken care of, but it’s pretty easy to find your way around independently.

Terracotta Horses in Xian

As one of China’s most popular tourist destinations, the Terracotta Warriors Museum will be busy; you should expect large crowds.

Aim to arrive as soon as the gates open and avoid weekends and Chinese public holidays like the plague!

The Terracotta Warriors Museum is one of the most popular things to do in Xian; we took the Xian Skip-the-Line Terracotta Warriors Private Day Tour to concentrate on simply loving every second at this iconic site!

2. Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum

While the terracotta warriors and horses are world famous, the mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor Qing Shi Huang, which has yet to be excavated, is less well known.

If you have time, it’s worth taking the free bus from the museum to the mausoleum site. You will need to show your ticket to the museum to use the bus and get to the mausoleum site.

Guides will tell you that the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum took 720,000 labourers almost 40 years to build and that the burial chamber is larger and more splendid than the Great Pyramid. It’s also believed to be intact – not raided like so many of the tombs in Egypt.

The Chinese government won’t allow the mausoleum to be opened until archaeologists know how to preserve any treasures they find. We may have to wait many years for the secrets of this tomb to be revealed. Meanwhile, there’s little to see apart from the great burial mound.

💡 TIP: The site is enormous! You can ride a cart around the excavation sites, but make sure you have lots of water in your refillable water filter bottle as the site can get very warm.

3. Cycle Around the Old Xian City Wall

Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, constructed the 14th-century brick and timber Xian Bell Tower in Xi’an. Standing 118 feet (36 meters) high, the two-storey tower is topped off by three layers of eaves.

It’s very colourful, with grey brickwork, green tiles, red-painted woodwork, and gilding on the roof. Inside, there’s a spiral staircase and many traditional decorations from the Qin and Ming dynasties.

Packed with stalls and restaurants selling tempting dishes with ancient recipes, the sights, smells, and tastes of the Muslim Quarter tantalise every sense.

Good to know: The ridiculously cheap food in the Muslim market is far more inspiring and authentic than a bland hotel meal . A visit here is the perfect way to end your day.

TIP: Don’t worry if you don’t speak Chinese, as most of the stalls and restaurants have pictorial menus. With a bit of pointing, sign language, and a smile, you’ll soon be eating amazing food that’s so much better than any Chinese food you’ve experienced in the West !

Filled with architecture and sculptures telling Tang stories and lively street performances, it’s a great place to shop, eat and people-watch. During Chinese New Year , expect there to be lots of extra activities!

While Xian City is one of the most popular tourist destinations in China, it’s also a great base for day trips in the local area. There are so many things to do near Xian – here are some of the most popular ones to get you thinking about what you want to do on your trip:

15. Mount Hua Shan – Climb One of the Five Great Mountains of China

Walkway at Mount Hua Shan near Xian China

While you may not want to attempt the infamous “ death walk ” high up in the mountains, this spectacular landscape is a delight.

This Xi’an Huashan Mountain Adventure Day Tour leaves Xi’an early to make the most of your day and includes a cable car ride to the summit of Mount Hua Shan.

16. Daming Palace and Danfeng Gate

Dafeng Gate at the Daming Palace Xian China

The super-sized Daming Palace was the Imperial Palace of the Tang Dynasty for almost 300 years but fell into disrepair long before England had even trembled at the thought of William the Conqueror.

The palace was (re)discovered in 1957 and now forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang’an-Tianshan Corridor “.

TIP: The best thing to do at the Daming Palace site is gasp in awe at the sheer size of the Dafeng Gate – the central southern entrance to the palace. It has an astonishing five massive doorways. Everything at this site is super-sized!

17. Volunteer to Work With Pandas 🙂

Volunteer work with critically endangered pandas is just about the most enriching cultural thing you can do on a day trip from Xi’an.

It’s a bit of a faff to get to, but this Volunteer with Pandas tour , with a private guide, is fantastic! It might just be the #1 highlight of your whole China holiday.

TIP: Don’t forget your camera! Take an extra SD card and a spare battery too – you WILL need them for all those oh-so-cute panda pics!

This site is an easy tag-on to a trip to the Terracotta Warriors Museum, as there’s a direct bus between the two sites. Don’t miss the reconstructed houses that are designed to look like the original Neolithic settlement on this site.

19. Xingqinggong Park

Visiting Xingqinggong Park in the Beilin district is one of the most fun things to do in Xian , and it’s also FREE. If you’re travelling with kids, it’s a great place for them to let off steam for a while.

Built on the ancient Xingqing Palace site, this is the largest park in Xian – perfect for a leisurely stroll around the Xingqing Lake where Emperor Xuan Zong enjoyed boating!

Where to Stay in Xian

We stayed “within the walls” to be within walking distance of the Xian City Wall and other central landmarks, including the Muslim Quarter. The centrally located Bell Tower Hotel – just 200 yards from the Drum Tower and the Muslim Quarter – was fantastic.

The Sofitel Legend Hotel is just outside the old city, but you’ll revel in the comfort and high standards here. It’s also on the doorstep of several Xian attractions.

  • Xi'an in 3 Days
  • Xi'an in 2 Days

Side Trip Itineraries from Xi'an

In general, spending 3 to 4 days is ideal for a trip in Xi'an with a comfortable pace without missing all the highlights.

If you only have two days, you could focus on the main highlights — the Terracotta Warriors and some city sightseeing.

We do not recommend a one-day trip, as it gives only a hurried and cursory glance at scenic spots.

Discover real reviews of Highlights Travel Family 's best-rated service across trusted platforms.

Xi'an in 4 Days (Rich Experience)

If you want a full and rich experience in Xi'an, spending four days is recommended.

Without missing the highlights, you'll have the opportunity to have some special experiences like making your own terracotta warrior, trying on Chinese traditional costumes, and a food tour.

You could also visit Mount Hua, Taoism's sacred mountain, and admire its breathtaking peaks. If you're more adventurous, you can also challenge its famous trestles. Here is the itinerary:

  • Day 1: Arrival and free exploration
  • Day 2: One day trip to the Terracotta Warriors with a hands-on experience of making clay warriors
  • Day 3: A full day in Mount Hua
  • Day 4: City highlight touring (museums, pagodas, Ancient City Wall, and a food tour) and departure

See 4-Day Xi'an and Huashan Mountain Tour

All our tours can be adjusted based on your interests and needs. Our private trips are hassle-free and flexible.

Xi'an in 3 Days (Essence of Xi'an)

With three days in Xi'an, you could still enjoy a full and rich experience. The difference with the four-day itinerary is that you won't visit Mount Hua. Here is the itinerary:

  • Day 1: Arrival + museum visiting
  • Day 2: A trip to Terracotta Warriors with a food tour
  • Day 3: City sightseeing (Ancient City Wall, museums, pagodas, etc) with a hanfu experience and departure

The Terracotta Warrior is a big attraction. It is the mausoleum and burial pits of the first emperor of China and the largest one in China.

In order to get a good understanding of the history and stories behind it, we will arrange a hands-on experience of making your own clay warrior.

Thus, you're going to spend most of your second day there. If you are particularly interested in this attraction, it is worth spending a day on it.

Our schedule is flexible. Just contact us if you want to make some adjustments or have any needs.

Xi'an in 2 Days (Focus on the Terracotta Warriors)

If you have two days, you could focus on the Terracotta Warriors with some city sightseeing. Here is the itinerary:

  • Day 1: Arrival + city sightseeing (Ancient City Wall, museums, and pagodas)
  • Day 2: Visit Terracotta Warriors + departure

Two days' visiting is a little tight. If you want to have a better experience when visiting the Terracotta Warriors, we suggest a full day's visiting and leave in the third day's morning.

Our private transfer and local guide's accompany will make the most of your time and maximize your travel experience.

There are also some worthwhile destinations close to Xi'an that you might consider visiting:

1. Luoyang and Shaolin Temple

Luoyang, an ancient capital like Xi'an, and its nearby Shaolin Temple are the most popular choices, especially if you are interested in Chinese history and Chinese kung fu.

A trip to Luoyang and Shaolin Temple takes about one day. Luoyang is about a 1-hour bullet train travel from Xi'an.

In Luoyang, the main attraction is its spectacular Longmen Grottoes where you could marvel at the exquisite carvings and Buddha statues.

Then head to Shaolin Temple, which takes about 1½ hours by car. Walk around the temple and learn about Chinese Buddhism and martial arts. You could also enjoy a wonderful Kung Fu show. See One Day Longmen Grottoes and Shaolin Temple Tour .

2. Pingyao Ancient Town

In Pingyao, you could get a glimpse of the ordinary life of a merchant in ancient times. Pingyao is about a 3-hour journey from Xi'an by the bullet train. Spending about two days touring the highlights of Pingyao Ancient Town is recommended.

There you could explore the original site of the first draft bank in China, visit an interesting museum — Armed Escort Company Museum, watch the sunset from the city wall, and pay a visit to Wang's Family Compound (the Forbidden City in Folk). Check out the 2-Day Pingyao Highlights Tour .

If you have more time, you could explore further north to Datong, which is famous for its Yungang Grottoes and the Hanging Temple. See the 4-Day Datong and Pingyao Tour .

1 Day in Xian

To be honest, one day is too short to have a fantasy tour in Xian, but it is even too wrong to leave Xian behind when you have a chance to take a day layover during your China vacation or international flight journey. Ideal trip length of Xian tour (excluding arrival day) is one and a half or two full days, while one day is also long enough to enjoy a glimpse of the best part of the ancient capital Xian. Then how to spend your precious ONE DAY in Xian? China Discovery has the best idea for you.

Riding on Ancient City Wall - Our Guests from USA

1 Day Efficient Xian Tour including Terracotta Warriors

This Xian Day Tour is suitable for those who are already in Xian and looking for a classic Xian day tour, or those who have a day layover in Xian, or come to Xian from Luoyang, or arrive at Xian in the early morning from Beijing. A short brief day to explore the best highlights of Xian, including a memorable visit to Terracotta Warriors, leisure stroll or biking on the Ancient City Wall, exploring Muslim Quarter and around.

Where to Start Your One Day in Xian?

Xian North Railway Station

Xian North Railway Station is the High Speed Train Station as well as the starting point of Xian tour for most tourists. It is located at Yuanshuo Road, Weiyang District, Xian City (陕西省西安市未央区元朔路), about 20km from downtown and 48km from Terracotta Warriors. It has frequent subways to downtown as well as tourists to Terracotta Warrior, also has access for travel agencies to pick up guests. You’d better take high speed trains which arrive at Xian before 9~10 A.M. if you want to take a Xian city day tour from the North Railway Station. The earliest high speed train from Beijing arrive at Xian at around 11 A.M., which is not early enough to have a day tour in Xian. Shanghai and Chengdu are more recommended to take a train to Xian to have a day tour. Shanghai has an overnight train which arrives at Xian at around 9 A.M., and Chengdu’s earliest high speed train to Xian arrive at around 10 A.M. Luoyang is also a good option. If your train arrive at Xian after 10 A.M., you’d better skip the sites in the city and only visit the Terracotta Warriors, or stay one more day in Xian.

Xian Xianyang International Airport

Compared with Xian North Railway Station, Xian Xianyang Internaitonal Airport is easier to start a day tour in Xian as it has many morning arrival flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing, etc. But you also have to catch the earliest flights. The airport of Xian is located about 40km from the downtown and 66km from Terracotta Warriors. You can take shuttle buses to downtown and Terracotta Warriors directly (subway is not available at the airport). To make the best of your precious time in Xian, we recommend our private tour service for you. Our tour guide and driver will pick up you at the arrival hall of the airport, then transfer to attractions to start sightseeing directly.

Your Hotel in Xian

If you are independent traveler, you’d better stay in a hotel with convenient connections to public transportations, better be not too far from the city center area (around the Bell Tower, Ancient City Wall ). If you prefer travel with a more comfortable and flexible way, we can also arrange tailor-made Xian day tour for you with hotel pickup and drop off.

Recommended Itinerary A: 1 Day Xian City Tour with Terracotta Warrior - suitable for both travelling with travel agency and solo

Set out from Xian North Railway Station / Xian Xianyang International Airport / your hotel, and transfer by private car (or tourist bus) to No. 1 attraction in Xian discover one of the greatest man-made wonders in the world – the Terracotta Warriors and Horses which was built by the first emperor of China Qin Shihuang to protect him in his afterlife. Over 8,000 life-size warriors, horses and chariots, buried in 3 pits for more than 2,000 years until uncovered by a local farmer in 1974, form an ancient military army with complete battle units of infantry, cavalry, etc. Standing in front of these figures, one can’t help being amazed not only by the ambition of Emperor Qin Shihuang but also by the fabulous artistic skills of ancient Chinese artisans. Sightsee around 2 hours at Terracotta Warriors, then go to have lunch.

After lunch, take private car (or tourist bus) to Xian downtown to continue your sightseeing. Go to the Ancient City Wall , the largest and best-preserved ancient city wall in China first where you can stroll or bike leisurely to examine this well-maintained city wall which is 12 meters high and 18 meters wide with a total circuit of nearly 14 kilometers. Nextly , go to the bustling and lively Muslim Quarter to try different local snacks and explore Muslim culture. If you are still energetic, go to take a leisure stroll at the Bell & Drum Tower Square, where the biggest and most intact Bell Tower and Drum Tower in China stands. You can go up to Bell Tower to enjoy panoramic views of the ancient capital.

After the tour, be escorted back to your hotel, or go to catch your flight or train departing Xian. Tour ends! More details at【 1 Day Xian Essence Tour from $116 】

One Day in Xian

Recommended Itinerary B: 1 Day Mount Huashan Leisure Hike from Xian - China Discovery's private tour package

This morning, your tour guide and driver will come to your hotel to meet you, then drive about two hours to the foot of Mount Huashan.

To save time and energy for the highlighting part of Mount Huashan, you will take the cableway directly from East Gate up to the North Peak (about 10mins ride). North peak has good views of other four peaks. Start hiking from North Peak to East Peak which will take about 2 hours to get to the East Peak. On route, you have several spots to see, such as the Heavenly Ladders, Riyue Cliff, Canglong Ling, Golden Lock Pass, etc. Continue hiking about 1.5 hours to the South Peak where you can try the famous Plankroad in the Sky which is seen as one of the most dangerous hikings in the world. It is a more than 100 meters long, 0.3 meters wide plank road built along the surface of a vertical cliff. About 30 minutes are needed to walk from this side to another, then return. Keep hiking about 40mins from South Peak to the West Peak. The West Peak is also called Lotus Peak because of its unique shape. This peak is formed by a huge rock. Hence it's very steep. Lastly, take the cableway down to the foot of Mount Hua. Your driver will take you back to Xian.

Tips: pack some favorite foods and drinks with you because there is not much food you can buy on the mountain. More details at【 4 Days Xian Essential Highlights Plus Mount Hua Day Trip 】

Most Important Xian Travel Notes

Xian applies to the 72-Hour Transit Visa Exemption. Visitor from 53 foreign countries who hold valid travel document & connecting flights to a third country/region can enter Xian from Xian Xianyang Airport, and stay in Xian up to 72 hours without a Chinese Visa. If you have a short layover less than 24 hours, you also don’t have to apply for a visa to visit Xian.

Generally speaking, you can travel to Xian all year around as most of the attractions are located in and near downtown. But the best time to visit is in autumn (mid-September to early November) when it is neither too hot or too cold, and the number of tourists is relatively smaller than the summer time’s. If it is not possible to schedule your Xian tour in autumn, March, April and May are also a good choice, for the comfortable temperature.

What t wear in Summer? - light, quick-dry and easy to wear clothes, hat, sunscreen, rain jacket and comfortable shoes. What t wear in Winter? - double layer jacket, long underwear pants and tops, sweaters, long sleeve shirts, wool blend socks, boots, winter jacket, winter hat, winter gloves, winter scarf. What to wear in Spring? - long underwear, fleece outer layer, face mask, light hat, scarf, and gloves. What to wear in Autumn? - thermal warmer jacket, light hat, gloves, scarf, wool socks, fleece pants.

Flight and high speed train are two major transportation to get to Xian. Currently you can take nonstop, stopover, or connecting flights to Xian from more than 50 countries and regions, such as Hong Kong, Macau, Taipei, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Sydney, Kuala, Bangkok, etc. Xian is also connected wide by domestic flights from majority of big cities in China, such as Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai, etc. For train journeys less than 6 hours, you can take high speed trains from Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Luoyang, Zhengzhou, Pingyao, etc.

Bell & Drum Towers Area - strongly recommended for first-timers, easy access to Ancient City Wall, Muslim Quarter, Bell Tower, Drum Tower and popular restaurants. Hotel rates are higher than other areas, but you have a lot of choices of different standards. Xincheng District - not very far from the city center as well as Xian’s main attractions, recommended for families as there are shopping center and parks to enjoy a stroll. Yanta Distict – Yanta District is on the south of the city center, also near main attractions, including Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, History Museum, etc. It has many hotels of budget class.

The city area of Xian can be explored in brief two days, while the surrounding regions also have a lot of places to explore, such as Mount Hua, Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, Shaolin Temple in Dengfeng. If time allows, you can extend your trip from Xian to above places. Each place only need about 1 day to visit.
