COMING SOON ARCHITECTURAL FIREWORKS CRUISE

2 hours — river & lake* , architectural fireworks cruise.

Adults : $48    Seniors : $46    Youths : $26    Children 6 and under : Free

Enjoy your favorite drink while gazing Chicago’s magnificent architecture and finish your cruise with a fabulous light show, at Navy Pier!

Fireworks, one of the Four Great Inventions of ancient China were invented in the 12th century.

Chicago approved City-Wide Use of Fireworks on the 4th of July 1893. Mayor of Chicago Patrick Eugene Prendergast issued a proclamation approving the use of fireworks to celebrate the World’s Colombian Exposition and to celebrate the nation’s 117th Independence Day.

This fascination with fireworks, noise, and color continues today. The City of Chicago offers a fireworks show at Navy Pier on Wednesdays at 9:30pm and Saturday nights at 10:15pm.

Drinks may be purchased individually with a credit card on the boat. Complimentary Coca-Cola soft drinks, lemonade, and cookies are included. Depending on lock traffic, our fireworks cruise will sail along one of two routes, river only or river and lake.

Join us at 8pm on Wednesday nights and 8:30pm on Saturdays for our narrated Architectural Fireworks 2-hour Cruise. There’s something for everyone on this one of a kind cruise!

* Subject to change, depends on lock traffic and weather conditions

  • Due to heavy Lake traffic, cruises may return to dock 30 minutes later than scheduled.

This is my 8th time on a Chicago architectural river cruise and this was by far the most informative and biggest bang for your buck. Operagolf / LaHabra
The best guide on our whole USA trip. We took the Architecture tour where the boat meandered in between all of the incredible buildings of the city with the guide knowing EVERYTHING about each building; its style, age, height, architect, cost, purpose, owner ….. Quite brilliant! DrCumbrian / TripAdvisor
I've done several of the architecture cruises since my family moved to Chicago, and this is the best one yet! Allie K / TripAdvisor
If you only have time for one sight-seeing event while in Chicago, do this. We really have no great interest in architecture, but this tour came highly recommended and we did not regret it. Allice I / Oklahoma
My wife and I very much enjoyed the Chicago Line Cruise jazz cruise... My spouse said this was one of the favorite things she has done in Chicago since moving here in the past year, and I agree. I am a jazz snob, and ... I was very pleased with the music offered by the Geordie Kelly group. He's a fine jazz guitarist, and his band was great. Augie R / Yelp

If you're hoping to see as much of Chicago as you can in a short amount of time, you may want to sign up for a boat tour. During each tour, you'll learn the historical significance of the skyline's iconic buildings while enjoying breathtaking views of the Windy City. Considering traveler reviews and expert opinion, U.S. News selected the best Chicago boat tours, ranging from an architectural boat tour on the river to a thrilling speedboat ride on Lake Michigan.

Editor’s Pick: Wendella Boats – Chicago River Architecture Tour

Price: Adults from $44; kids from $20 Duration: 1.5 hours

U.S. News independently paid to send Cortney Fries , an award-winning writer based in Chicago, on this tour to provide readers with an unbiased, first-hand perspective of what to expect. The Wendella Boats Chicago River Architecture Tour was selected by our team as an Editor’s Pick thanks to its popularity and favorable user reviews.

Cruise three branches of the Chicago River as you take in views of famous Chicago landmarks, such as the Willis Tower and Merchandise Mart. A knowledgeable guide provides an overview of the architecture and interesting lessons in Chicago history along the way. For instance, did you know that the Lyric Opera House was built in the shape of a giant throne, or that the Chicago River is the only natural river reversed by humankind? Learn about: the four stars on the Chicago flag and what they represent, the legend of the O’Leary cow starting the Great Chicago Fire, the statue atop the Chicago Board of Trade and Chicago’s famous drawbridges.

Refreshments and snacks are sold on board. Sit on the top deck to listen to the live tour with unobstructed views, but bring a jacket or sun hat if it’s cool or sunny. Climate-controlled seating is offered below, as are restrooms. Tours are generally available daily beginning at 9:30 a.m., with multiple departures throughout the day and evening. If you’re short on time or traveling with kids, the 45-minute version of this architecture tour may be your best option.

Chicago has one of the most beautiful lakefronts in the world, backed by a skyline of soaring skyscrapers. Travelers landing at Navy Pier will find a combination of Crystal Palace, stained glass museum, lovely Coney Island and festival marketplace stretching out into the lake. With the only exception of a few miles of industry on the southern extremity, the entire lakefront is devoted to recreational uses, with museums, beaches, parks and harbors, which include Lincoln Park to the north, Jackson Park to the south and Grant Park opposite the city center. The central part of Chicago has several of the tallest buildings in the world, including the Sears Tower, which at 110 stories is the tallest in the U.S.

Pepsi Skyline is a stage facility (1500 seats) hosting various live events (music, comedy acts, acrobatic shows, theatrical) in the summer and early fall.

At the Navy Pier (its far end) is permanently docked the USS Chicago ship (Baltimore-class heavy cruiser).

Navy Pier Chicago city bus lines are number 2 (Hyde Park Express), 29 (State), 65 (Grand), 66 (Chicago) and 124 (Navy Pier bus shuttle).

Illinois River

Illinois River is one of the Mississippi's principal tributaries and has length ~ 273 mi (439 km). Illinois River originates in Chicago (Lake Michigan), flowing to the southwest across Illinois and emptying into the Mississippi River near Grafton. In the 18th-19th-centuries, the Illinois River has always been an important trade waterway connecting the Mississippi with Lake Michigan (the Great Lakes ). The river's importance for commercial shipping increased since the opening (in 1848) of the "Illinois and Michigan Canal" (length 96 mi / 154 km) connecting with the Chicago River and running between Chicago IL (Bridgeport neighborhood) and LaSalle IL. The Canal's transportation operations ceased in 1900 when was opened the "Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal"/aka Chicago Drainage Canal (length 28 mi / 45 km) connecting the rivers Chicago and Des Plaines. With the Chicago Drainage Canal (1907-extended), the Chicago River's flow was reversed (now out of Lake Michigan).

In 1933 was completed and opened of the Illinois Waterway (length 336 mi / 541 km) connecting Calumet River (Chicago) and the Illinois River (Grafton). The waterway has 8x locks, the upper/first one (T.J. O'Brien lock and dam in Chicago IL) is approx 7 mi / 11 km from Lake Michigan, while the lower/last one (LaGrange lock and dam in Beardstown IL) is 90 mi / 140 km from the Mississippi. The other 6 locks and dams are in the IL's towns Lockport (Lockport), Joliet (Brandon Road), Morris (Dresden Island), Marseilles (Marseilles), North Utica (Starved Rock) and Peoria (Peoria).

Want to catch a coastal cruise from navy pier you can in 2025..

Victory cruise boat

Navy Pier's only coastal cruises traversing the Great Lakes are making a comeback in 2025.

The two Victory Cruise Lines vessels, Victory I and Victory II, will return to Chicago after a yearlong hiatus. The 190-passenger vessels were out of commission in 2024 after their previous owners went bankrupt and were forced to sell the ships at auction in April.

The ships were long operated by American Queen Voyages under the names Ocean Voyager and Ocean Navigator. John Waggoner, who founded American Queen Voyages in 2011 but left the company a few years ago, came out of retirement to buy the vessels back for a relatively cheap $1.9 million. He has since refurbished them and established the Victory brand.

chicago navy pier boat cruise

"As long-time enthusiasts of maritime adventures, my wife Claudette and I are thrilled for the team to open reservations of the inaugural season and we prepare to sail these magnificent waters," Waggoner said in a statement announcing their return. "Our cruise experience will offer many special touches, including being the only cruise line to dock at Chicago’s Navy Pier, and most of all, our ships will be a home away from home exploring all five Great Lakes."

Most other Great Lakes cruises originate or end in Milwaukee, but the Victory line is unique in that it is bookended by Chicago and Toronto. Itineraries vary by voyage, but the vessels touch all five Great Lakes and make stops at Mackinac Island, Sault Ste. Marie, Cleveland, Detroit, Niagara Falls and more.

Cruises are an increasingly popular way to explore the Great Lakes for those seeking an elevated experience and willing to pay for it. There's the inherent beauty of the lakes and the surrounding nature, of course, but sailing back and forth between two countries is also a big selling point. Another driver is that vacationers are seeking "experience" travel. People also increasingly want to explore destinations closer to home. Companies therefore are significantly increasing their investments in the region with new and larger ships, longer routes and more frequent service.

The return of the Victory coastal cruises promises to be a boon to Navy Pier's businesses. "I think this is a great tourism booster," said Navy Pier President and CEO Marilynn Gardner.

chicago navy pier boat cruise

Victory will offer 36 voyages on the Great Lakes each season and bring thousands of maritime tourists to the pier.

"We always like to say the pier is the city's welcoming front porch and a gateway to the Great Lakes, so it's really just a great opportunity to ensure international tourists are able to see our incredible city from the lake and experience all the incredible ports in between," she added.

The victory boats were built in 2001. They span 286 feet in length, small for cruise ships but necessary to navigate the Great Lakes waters. "None of the cruise lines on the Great Lakes are big because they can't be," a spokesperson for Great Lakes Cruises said. "If they're too big, they can't fit through the canals and the locks that they have to go through."

Still, the ships boast 101 suites and decks and can accommodate 84 crew members in addition to the 190 passengers.

chicago navy pier boat cruise

Victory says the boats are "purpose-built to cruise on all five Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and the French-Canadian Maritimes, offering a refreshing alternative to river and ocean cruises. The size and maneuverability of these ships are perfectly suited for coastal cruising in this region." The ships are currently registered in Nassau, Bahamas.

A nine-night cruise from Chicago to Toronto starts at $5,799 per guest, an 11-night cruise from Chicago to Montreal runs $6,999 and a 14-night roundtrip from Chicago costs $8,699.

Cruise ship stops in Detroit are about to surge

Jack Grieve r4

Jack Grieve is a Crain’s reporter covering the news people are talking about, from Detroit and Grand Rapids to Chicago , Cleveland and New York .

Victory Cruise Lines

Two of the grandest Great Lakes cruise ships are making a comeback in 2025 and will bring thousands of maritime tourists back to the Port of Detroit.

The Victory Cruise Lines vessels, Victory I and Victory II, will return to Detroit after a year-long hiatus. The 190-passenger vessels were out of commission in 2024 after their previous owners went bankrupt and were forced to sell the ships at auction in April.

The ships, previously operated by American Queen Voyages under the names Ocean Voyager and Ocean Navigator, stopped in Detroit 24 times and accounted for roughly 40% of all dockings during their last active summer.

"When we lost them for this year, it was a big drop for us," said Mark Schrupp, executive director of the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority.

The vessels are now scheduled to dock in Detroit between 32 to 36 times next year.

"That's some 4,500 passengers who will get off and spend the day in Detroit," Schrupp said.

He expects the port to see a record year with more than 75 dockings thanks to the Victory lines. Visit Detroit, the city's visitors bureau, says that could total north of 12,000 cruise passengers.

"That's a boat load of people who will get to experience Detroit," said Jennifer Ollinger, manager of domestic and international tourism at Visit Detroit. "They're going to really take passengers into the community. They'll be all over metro Detroit visiting our local attractions."

chicago navy pier boat cruise

Stops range from the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation to the Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores. The ships will stay all day in Detroit, meaning passengers will patron local restaurants, too.

Entering Detroit via cruise ship is a spectacle on its own, Ollinger said. "While it does have a tremendous economic impact for Detroit, for us it also has that intangible impact of changing perceptions of Detroit."

The ships are returning after John Waggoner, who founded American Queen in 2011 but left the company a few years ago, came out of retirement to repurchase the vessels for a relatively cheap $1.9 million. He has since refurbished the ships and established the Victory brand.

Drawing inspiration from the current popularity of “competitive socializing,” the free, two-day event is being billed as the biggest competitive gaming festival Chicago has seen. All along the mile-long Pier, inside and out, guests will be able to challenge each other in games of strength, skill, and strategy, including inflatable obstacle courses, classic arcade and video racing games, axe throwing, bull riding, a dunk tank, and more, capped off by the largest game of Simon Says in Chicago history.

“I don’t suspect Daniel Burnham could have imagined the ‘competitive socializing’ craze when he drafted his 1909 Plan for Chicago,” said Jim Harris, Vice President of Tenant Partnership & Engagement for Navy Pier. “But this event is definitely a modern-day nod to the architect’s vision of Navy Pier as ‘a public space on the lakefront for active recreation and social interaction.’”

Among the planned Pier-wide activations, slated for 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, are:

• Inflatables, including obstacle courses, Gladiator Joust, and life-size Hungry Hungry Hippos – outside, in Polk Bros Park;

• Dunk tank and electric bull riding – outside, near Chicago Children’s Museum;

• Giant soccer darts, axe throwing, inflatable archery, cornhole, and can jam – outside, on the Sable Hotel porches;

• Tricycle racing and giant pong – outside, near the Navy Pier Beer Garden;

• Golf putting challenges and mini-games – outside, along the South Dock;

• Classic arcade games (Pac Man, Golden Tee, and more) and video racing games – inside the Family Pavilion;

• Reenactments of popular TV gameshows, including Family Feud, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy – inside the Family Pavilion;

• Board games and “Minute to Win It” challenges – inside, in the Food Experience Culture Corner;

• Family Game Room, featuring foosball, pop-a-shot, air hockey, and ping pong – inside, Door 7 lobby;

• The largest game of Simon Says in Chicago history, with a DJ and pre-game Double Dutch Squad performance – 7 p.m. both nights at the outdoor Wave Wall Stage.

All activities and dates are subject to change. Check www.navypier.org for updates.

About Navy Pier

Located on Lake Michigan, Navy Pier is the top nonprofit tourism destination in the Midwest, stretching more than six city blocks and typically welcoming nearly 9 million annual guests. Originally opened in 1916 as a shipping and recreation facility, this Chicago landmark showcases more than 50 acres of parks, restaurants, attractions, retail shops, sightseeing and dining cruise boats, exposition facilities and more.

The Pier celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016 with the unveiling of the iconic Centennial Wheel, Polk Bros Park, Family Pavilion and Peoples Energy Welcome Pavilion. In 2021, Navy Pier continued to usher in its second century with ongoing Pier-wide redevelopment efforts—including Sable, a 223-room Hilton hotel, new restaurants and partnerships, and thrilling additions to Pier Park. The Pier is also proud to continue providing free, year-round arts and cultural programming designed to inspire, educate and connect communities across the city and globe. Click here to donate to Navy Pier, a mission-driven 501(c)(3) organization, in support of the organization’s post-pandemic revival and free public programming.
