Tourist plummets 300 feet to his death after crossing ladder on instagram-popular mountain.
A 42-year-old British man plummeted 300 feet to his death in Austria after slipping off a ladder bridge in the Dachstein Mountains, a popular place tourists flock to for a good Instagram photo.
The unknown victim was alone on the famous 130-foot ladder when he experienced trouble and fell into the valley below, according to the Mirror.
The ladder connects the lower portion of the Donnerkogel mountain to the Großer Donnerkogel or “Greater” part of the mountain that includes the 6,740-foot peak.
Investigators called the man’s fall an accident and ruled out any third-party negligence, the outlet reported.
The ladder is promoted as the “new TOP attraction on the Zwieselalm for climbing enthusiasts” by the Dachstein region tourist website, which notes the climb is done in four stages with the ladder waiting “as the ultimate adrenaline kick.”
The climb is listed as a via ferrata, or “iron path,” a climb that uses steel cables, rungs, pegs and ladders that climbers are attached to via harness for their safety.
Two helicopters and multiple officers from two nearby police departments recovered the man’s body from the gorge.
On Instagram, thousands of thrill-seekers have shared their experiences of ascending the hair-raising tourist attraction, with some using its nickname “the stairway to heaven.”
The climb is rated moderate/difficult and is “Not ideal for beginners.”
Several Austrian towns have gotten tired of tourists invading their hometowns for social media content, with some even going as far as begging to be left alone.
In May, the small hamlet of Hallstatt closed down its famous lakefront view after tourists began to take over the town to check out what is believed to be the inspiration for several scenes in the Disney movie “Frozen.”
Mayor Alexander Scheutz said his town of 750 permanent residents gained over 7,000 visitors daily who were there to see the views that inspired “Arendelle” in the 2013 film.
Earlier this month, a 55-year-old Virginia man died while he attempted to complete the grueling, 24-mile Rim-to-Rim hike of the Grand Canyon.
First responders received a call around 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, about a hiker in distress near a campground on the North Kaibab Trail, where Ranjith Varma fell unconscious and needed to be airlifted out of the canyon, but lifesaving measures from park rangers were unsuccessful.

A British tourist died after he plunged more than 90 meters to his death while scaling a narrow ladder on an Austrian mountain, Metro reported. This area is popular among tourists seeking picturesque Instagram photos. The aerial ladder, known locally as the "stairway to heaven" rises sharply in the Dachstein Mountains outside of Salzburg.
The tragic incident happened on September 12 when the 42-year-old embarked on a solo climb up the ladder. However, he slipped and fell into the valley below. Police officers and a pair of rescue helicopters rushed to the scene following the accident, but the man couldn't be saved. Shortly after, rescuers retrieved his body.
Authorities have ruled out any third-party negligence, asserting that the climber was entirely alone at the time of the accident. The identity of the man has not been released.
Notably, the ladder is promoted as the ''new TOP attraction on the Zwieselalm for climbing enthusiasts'' by the Dachstein region tourist website , which notes the climb is done in four stages with the ladder waiting ''as the ultimate adrenaline kick.''

''The Panorama-ladder with its 40 meters is the new TOP attraction for all fans of via Ferratas. The via ferrata on the Donnerkogel at the Zwieselalm in Gosau at Dachstein presents amazing and breathtaking views of the glacier of the Dachstein, as well as of the highest mountain of Austria - the Grobglockner. The Ladder to heaven was built by Outdoor Leadership with their professional climber Heli Putz,'' the description on the website reads.
However, the website warns that the climb is "only [for] experienced climbers" and should be completed in mild weather and calm wind conditions.
The climb is rated as moderate/difficult and is not recommended for beginners.

A British man fell 300 feet to his death last week after slipping off an Instagram-famous ladder bridge in the Austrian mountains, police have said.
The 42-year-old man, who was not named, fell off the end of the aerial ladder in the Dachstein Mountains, in western Austria, and fell into the valley below, the Mirror reported.
He was alone at the time and was retrieved by two helicopter crews and multiple officers, Hallein Alpine and Abtenau police said, according to the outlet.
The fall has been ruled an accident, it added.
The ladder, known as "the stairway to heaven" or "sky ladder", connects the lower part of the Donnerkogel mountain to the higher part, which includes the 6,740-foot peak.
It is around 130 feet long and very popular on Instagram. Stefanie Millinger, an extreme athlete with more than 700,000 Instagram followers, balanced on the ladder in a ballet costume in 2020.
A website promoting the climb says it is usually done in four stages with the ladder being in the final leg of the trip and providing the "ultimate adrenaline kick."

A British man has been hospitalised with serious injuries in Vietnam after climbing on a rock face and falling while trying to take a selfie on his phone.
The man, who has not been named, had his left leg crushed following the incident in Xeo Sa Lung village, Pai Lung commune, Meo Vac district on 17 March.
The tourist had been climbing on a rock locals refer to as the ‘Cliff of Death’. He was hit by a boulder while taking the photo, causing him to fall and badly injure his leg.
Emergency services were called and first responders from Pai Lung administered first aid to the man.
An ambulance then took him to Ha Giang General Hospital for further treatment. His condition was not left threatening.
The patient was given pain relief and had bandages and splints on the injured leg. He was later transferred to a larger hospital in the capital city, Hanoi.
The Cliff of Death, which near the popular Pi Leng Pass, is dangerous, with many large, unstable boulders stacked on top of one another, officials say.
Tourists often scale the cliff to take photos on a rock formation overlooking a picturesque view, despite the lack of safety rails and the often slippery conditions.
Officials said there were several signs warning tourists not to scale the cliff, as well as fences blocking access to the area, which are regularly disregarded,.
In December last year an Irish tourist died after falling out of a moving train in Vietnam.
Patrick Ward, 45, was travelling with a tour group from Thai capital Bangkok to Kanchanaburi town.
At a brief stop over the river Kwai, the group made its way to the Sai Yok waterfall, a popular tourist destination.
Ward fell when he opened the door of the train carriage near a slope, according to the police.
The tourist had opened a door in the train carriage and fell 7-8 metres down a slope when the train slowed down at a scenic spot, police said.
Officers did not confirm whether the tourist was attempting to take a selfie, as was reported by local media outlets.

British tourist ‘falls overboard’ from cruise ship near remote island
Share this with
An urgent hunt has been launched for a British passenger who has fallen overboard off a cruise ship.
Croatian authorities have confirmed a ‘young Brit’ went missing from the Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas ship early today, and hasn’t been seen since.
Several ships helped join the search, with passengers being awoken with an emergency message blaring across the cruise.
Nicole Bullock wrote online: ‘Woken up on the cruise ship around 3.40am to the emergency message ‘Oscar Oscar Oscar off the port side’. Man overboard.
‘Been watching the rescue efforts off my balcony all day, hoping for a positive outcome.’
A search and rescue operation is being carried out on the island of Jabuka.
The ship is reportedly on a seven-day Greece-Croatia route which departs on August 3.
Metro has contacted Royal Caribbean for comment.
In March a Scottish tourist died after falling overboard from a cruise ship.
Liam Jones, 23, was last seen on the deck of the MSC Euribia on March 16 as it set off from Southampton to Amsterdam in The Netherlands.
It’s now been revealed Liam messaged his wife Sophia Mcphee to say he was seasick that same day – and that was the last time his devastated wife heard from her.
Sophia told the Daily Record that the last time she saw her husband was March 14 when he travelled from their home to Glasgow to meet his family.
She said: ‘I feel so lost. He’s just… gone. I’m never going to see him again. I’m devastated.
‘I have so many questions, and I’m not getting any answers to what’s happened.’

A British tourist has fallen overboard from a cruise ship near Croatia, according to the country's authorities.
Listen to this article
The man, who has not been named, is said to have fallen from the Explorer of the Seas cruise ship in the Adriatic Sea in the early hours of Friday morning, sparking a huge search.
Croatian officials said that coastguard boats, other cruise ships, a drone and a plane were searching for the man in the area of the Vis archipelago. The cruise ship was heading from Dubrovnik towards Zadar, further north up the coast.
Nicole Bullock, who said she was a passenger on the same cruise, wrote on social media: "Woken up on the cruise ship... to the emergency message “Oscar Oscar Oscar off the port side.”
"Man overboard. Been watching the rescue efforts off my balcony all day, hoping for a positive outcome."

Speaking to Croatian outlet HRT, Captain Željko Kuštera from the Port Authority of Split said that the outlook for the man was unclear.
"It is the height of the cruiser itself," he said. "The sea is warm, but everything depends on the circumstances, how he fell into the sea, but it works out that it is now summer and the sea is quite warm, so we plan to continue this action."
The Croatian government said in a statement: "The National Center for Coordination of Search and Rescue at Sea in Rijeka (MRCC) is coordinating the search and rescue operation for a missing person in the sea of the Vis archipelago, which was launched this morning, August 9 at 05:00, after receiving a report from the captain of a passenger ship while sailing near the islets Jabuka, from the direction of Dubrovnik towards Zadar.
"In accordance with the established search and rescue plan, the Port Authority of Split, the Office of the Port Authority in Hvar, and the Coast Guard of the Republic of Croatia with a ship and an aircraft are involved in the search for the young citizen of the United Kingdom."
Royal Caribbean has been contacted for comment.

Eyewitness: "I knew something was going to happen and then we just saw panic"
A British tourist has died in Australia after falling from the top of a waterfall.
The 20-year-old man, who has not been named, is said to have fallen about 100 metres (300ft) at Wentworth Falls, west of Sydney, after slipping from rocks.
His body has now been recovered following a search by rescue crews and a police helicopter, New South Wales Police said.
Wentworth Falls, in the Blue Mountains, is a popular beauty spot.
New South Wales police said the man, who was on holiday in Australia, was in a group of eight friends and had travelled from Sydney's Bondi area to the Blue Mountains for a picnic and a walk along a bush trail.
He was walking with friends at Wentworth Falls when he slipped at midday local time on Sunday.
His friend called for help and police, ambulance and rescue teams arrived at the scene but were unable to reach his body due to high winds.
At 20:00 local time a team of rescue squad officers arrived at the scene and worked with a police helicopter to winch out the man's body.
A police spokeswoman said: "The location is extremely rugged and difficult to access, despite the rescue crew being very experienced."
His family and the British Consulate in Australia were notified of his death on Sunday night and a report will be prepared for the coroner, police said.
The Foreign Office said it was aware of the death of a British national in New South Wales on Sunday and was providing consular assistance to his family.
The Blue Mountains national park is a World Heritage site and covers a million hectares, with huge cliffs, deep rainforest gulleys, sandstone canyons and waterfalls.
