Power Steering Pressure Line Replacement

So I just struggled through this and came up with a few pointers along the way. A little history. 2003 AWD Astro. I've had a leak for a while. It had gotten as bad that I could fill the upper reservoir to quiet the squealing and moaning and in 45 mins. the noises were back. I'm in ND and unless your in a city/town or on a Highway or a few county roads then you are driving on gravel/mud/frozen gravel/mud depending on the weather. I bought the van up here in 2012 and had never cleaned it prior. This was difficult to clean up to try and locate the leak. After about two partial weekend days spent with some engine cleaner and pressure washer I thought I had found the leak but was not sure. The only thing I could see was the first drops appeared on the pressure hose to the pump as it curved around from the top and bolted into the pump. I figured this had to be it as it was the only thing initially appearing wet after the clean up. This thread is invaluable and I would not have gotten through it with out it. viewtopic.php?f=46&t=8714 A couple of things I've not seen mentioned here that were helpful. I went and bought the fan clutch removal kit from the LAP store but it was missing the wrench I needed. So after some internet searches I found a decent sized crescent wrench and went with it. To remove the fan I found a YouTube video where the guy suggested using the tensioner in the reverse direction than usual to further tighten the belt and then knock the wrench with a hammer to get it loose. Worked very well. The other thing that I didn't see mentioned here was after removing the A/C compressor bolts and hoisting a couple of inches with something I wasn't sure what to do with the power steering pump bracket. The problem was I had bypassed my A/C compressor with the bypass pulley and belt. The bypass pulley covers one of the bolts needing removal to pull of the bracket and pump. Once I got that figured out and got the additional bolt out I was a little nervous about just pulling the bracket and pump off where I could see the pressure hose connection. Finally just kept pulling and got it to flop off and turned where I could see the pressure hose connection and got it loosened. I had also gotten a set of crowfoot line wrenches that did also help out some along the way.. Got her done and she lasted over 45 min. since filling with fluid so I've got an improvement anyways. Looks like your info says RWD. If that is the case you might be able to access from beneath from what I gathered from videos and posts online. There is no room on AWD other than to look from beneath. Taking the three bolts and one nut off of the face of the power steering bracket and loosening that hidden nut at the 45 degree angle behind the pump is not that difficult though if you just wanted to get at it from the top. You definitely will not need a pulley puller. I had rented one in case because I didn't know what I was doing and wanted to make sure I had everything I needed.

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help me here. These repair places -- ugh. I just purchased 2000 Astro. When I don't know the service history, I have all the fluids replaced, radiator flush etc done, so I have a baseline for maintenance. It's so hard finding a mechanic that doesn't try to upsell, esp as a woman, I don't even know if they're competent. Anyway, I had all the fluids done, new fuel filter, they sold me on a brake fluid flush (I questioned this because some people say never needed, others say every 2-3 years and the shop said the fluid was dirty, so ok) and power steering fluid flush. Re: the power steering they said it had a slow leak, just "seeping" not to worry right away. I asked them to put some Lucas stop leak in there, (it's like eight bucks at Napa, they charged me $18) but anyway, the power steering pump is making noise now. It isn't loud, but what could they have done to cause this? I understand from reading these forums that it's a pressurized system, could they have blown the seal? Not put enough fluid in? Didn't bleed it enough? They charged me $900 to do oil change, trans flush, differential service, flush radiator, check brakes, fuel filter, and the brake fluid and power steering flush. I wish I'd said not to those things, but after reading about how the pumps fail if the fluid isn't kept clean, I approved it. Also, does anyone know of an honest mechanic in Southern CA? This shop told me its $800 to replace this pump, but they rip off on parts prices so I'd really like to find someone else. Trouble is, the other shops sounded worse/bigger bullshi**ers. Thanks for any advice.

Thank you, What do you mean, the "loop may need blurping". Is that accomplished simply by taking the cap off? And as far as I can see, I can't see the fluid level from the outside, but I"ll look again. I can't imagine they did a flush and didn't fill it up enough, but you never know. Barb  

Burping it will do most often on it's own. Keep an eye on the expansion tank. When cold it should be about 1/3 full, as the motor reaches operating temp and circulates air is trapped at the top of the radiator and "burped" out into the expansion tank. As it cools the system creates a vacuum and sucks the fluid back in. Running the heat on high will be sure the coolant circulates through the heater core that is the highest point in our systems and often can't be filled when on level ground.
