Google Maps Releases Virtual Tour of USS Constitution

You can now explore four decks of the USS Constitution Street View–style via Google Maps.

If you’re like us, you were bummed to hear that starting in March, the USS Constitution will be dry docked for three years to undergo repairs. Fortunately, Google has your back. Last fall , Google Maps teamed up with the U.S. Navy to photograph the vessel and create a virtual 360-degree tour of four decks of Old Ironsides.

Well, the dry dock isn’t even in effect yet, and Google Maps has made good. The site published the complete virtual tour online Tuesday, so now anyone can explore the Constitution from the comfort of their own home, or office, or anywhere with Internet access.

Of course, exploring the Constitution online does not offer the same realism as being there in real life. However, it’s an excellent substitute while the vessel is being worked on, not only for the thousands of tourists and locals who visit the historic ship annually, but also for people around the world who might otherwise never have the chance to see her.

“Adding interior imagery of the USS Constitution to Google Maps was the next step towards providing the most accurate, useful and comprehensive map of the world,” said Deanna Yick, Google Maps Street View program manager, in a press release . “We hope this encourages curious observers to visit this historic ship in person one day.”

The Constitution , the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat, joins other notable sites around the world—the Taj Mahal and the Louvre, just to name a few—in an exclusive club of “places you can now tour online thanks to Google.” Last year, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum partnered with Google as well. You can now browse the museum’s galleries via Google Art Project .

Google has unveiled a 360-degree virtual tour of the USS Constitution.

Using Street View technology, Google Maps photographed the ship in late last year to create an online 360-degree virtual tour of the historic ship.

The 217-year-old warship is scheduled to undergo nearly three-years of restoration work during which time "Old Ironsides" will have her copper siding replaced, along with major restorations to areas of the ship's hull, interior, and stern. 

The digital tour offers a unique view of most decks and spaces in the warship, including some spaces typically closed off to visitors, and will allow full virtual access of the landmark during the restoration.

The USS Constitution is the world's oldest commissioned warship afloat, actively defending sea lanes against global threats from 1797 to 1855.

Google Maps Takes Landlubbers on a Visit to Old Ironsides

Google Maps isn't just for finding a nearby burger joint anymore. Now, users can tour the USS Constitution using Google Maps' Street View.

Google published the 360-degree virtual tour Tuesday (Jan. 20), using pictures taken in the fall of 2014. The ship, nicknamed Old Ironsides, launched in 1797 and was named by President George Washington himself. The USS Constitution became famous during the War of 1812 , when it defeated the British ship HMS Guerriere.

More than 200 years later, the USS Constitution is in need of some TLC. The ship is set to move to dry dock in March for major restoration work, including the replacement of its renowned copper siding, according to the U.S. Navy. Anticipating this work, Google and the Navy collaborated to photograph Old Ironsides at its usual berth in Charlestown Navy Yard in Massachusetts. "The timing was ideal," Cmdr. Sean Kearns, the commanding officer of the Constitution, said in a statement . "It enabled Google to photograph the ship pierside in her normal fully-rigged configuration before we down-rig the ship and move her into dry dock."

Touring the Constitution

The new virtual tour shows the Constitution on a blue-sky day in Charlestown, with panoramas of the ship's spar deck, gun deck, berth deck and orlop deck. Replica guns are visible on the gun deck, while hammocks can be seen hanging in the berth deck. The orlop deck is the lowest deck on the ship.

The Constitution is typically open to tourists year-round, but will be inaccessible for the estimated three years that it will spend in dry dock.

"This effort is particularly exciting because not only will it allow the public to go on a virtual tour to areas of the ship that will not be accessible while Old Ironsides is in dry dock, it will also bring this virtual tour experience to millions of people worldwide who might otherwise never get the chance to visit the ship in person," Kearns said.

Google Maps gone wild

Google Street View has moved far beyond its original purview of photographing the highways and byways of the United States. Street View is now available in more than 64 countries, and Google has also documented coral reefs, raging rivers and even polar bears in their natural habitat .

Google Maps users can also take virtual tours of such landmarks as the Taj Mahal and the Louvre Museum in France, as well as Egypt's archaeological wonders . Other not-quite-on-the-street views include Congaree National Park in South Carolina, the Statue of Liberty National Monument in New York, Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, St. Louis' Gateway Arch and the Memphis Zoo.

Nor is the USS Constitution the only ship featured on Google's Street View. Google Maps has previously photographed the USS North Carolina, a World War II battleship that is now a museum ship in Wilmington, North Carolina, and the USS Lexington, an aircraft carrier that is now a museum ship in Corpus Christi, Texas. Google Maps users can also tour the SS United States, a luxury liner built in 1952 that is now docked in Philadelphia.

The virtual tour of the USS Constitution can be viewed as part of the Google Maps Street View "U.S. Highlights."
