The Tour of Britain is making its debut in Derby for the first time in the race's 20-year history, with the fourth stage starting outside Derby Arena.

The Lloyds Bank-sponsored tour is the biggest professional bike road race in the UK, and Derby has been given the honour of hosting the start of the fourth stage, which finishes in Newark-on-Trent.

The route for the race has just been announced, covering 138.5km from Derby , through Derbyshire and into Nottinghamshire before moving onto the last leg of the fourth stage.

The elevation of the route will provide some challenge to racers on Friday, September 6, with 1,229m to climb through the day.

The route starts at Derby Arena before heading through to the scenic Elvaston Castle country park before heading through Borrowash, up to Risley, Dale Abbey, West Hallam, Stanley Common, Smalley and then through Heanor and Langley Mill before it crosses the border in Nottinghamshire to finish in Newark-on-Trent.

The East Midlands stage route includes an intermediate sprint with time bonuses and points toward the sprints in the final kilometres of the race at Collingham.

This year's stage is expected to finish between 2.13pm and 2.52pm on race day, as contestants will rush into Newark-on-Trent as it hosts the tour for its third time. Previous years' winners have included Fernndo Gaviria (2017) and Olav Kooij (2023).

The Tour of Britain begins on the Scottish border on Tuesday, September 3 before progressing into Tees Valley. It then heads into South Yorkshire and the East Midlands, before heading to West Northamptonshire, before concluding the heroic effort in Suffolk on Sunday, September 8.

British Cycling announces final Tour of Britain host towns for 2024

East Midlands to welcome men's race on stage four

Stevie Williams

British Cycling has announced that stage four of the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men will take place in the East Midlands this September.

The fourth stage of the shortened six day race will start in Derby on Friday 6 September before finishing in Newark-on-Trent, a town located northeast of Nottingham.

The rest of the host towns were announced by the national governing body last week . Starting in Kelso in the Scottish borders on Tuesday 3 September, the race will then finish in Felixstowe, Suffolk on Sunday 8 September.

In between the start in Scotland and the finish on the Suffolk coast, the race will also visit the likes of Darlington, Sheffield and Northampton as it gradually heads south.

Following on from the announcement that Northampton will play host to the race for the first time, Derby will now join that list as a first time host in 2024. The stage is set to start outside the Derby arena, a well-known track cycling venue, before heading through Derbyshire and across the border into Nottinghamshire.

Newark-on-Trent has hosted the race on two previous occasions. Visma-Lease a Bike’s Olav Kooij won a sprint finish in the town during last year’s race marking his fourth consecutive stage win. His teammate Wout van Aert went on to win the race overall for the second time in his career.

If Van Aert returns to the race this year, he will be familiar with the finish along the seafront in Felixstowe on the final day, after winning a sprint finish in the town last September .

The full route details for each stage are expected to follow in the weeks ahead as British Cycling gets set to stage the Tour of Britain Men for the first time. After the liquidation of the race's former organiser, SweetSpot , British Cycling took over the running of the event .

It has also been shortened to six stages with the aim of achieving parity with the newly created Tour of Britain Women moving forward.

After the success of past stages in the county, British Cycling Events managing director Jonathan Day said that he expected huge crowds of roadside fans to gather once again in Nottinghamshire for stage four.

Day said: "We have seen the great support across Nottinghamshire for recent editions of the race, so have no doubt that communities in Derby, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire will again be out in force to welcome the riders and to make for another memorable stage of the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men, coming at the end of a huge summer of cycling."

Tour of Britain 2024 Cycle Race - Stage 4: Derby to Newark

6 september 2024 , 11:00 am - 12:00 pm.

Come and watch Britain’s most prestigious cycling race pass through South Derbyshire at Elvaston Country Park.

For the first time in the 20-year history of the modern race, the city of Derby will welcome the race, with the stage getting underway at 11am outside the Derby Arena. Thulston, Elvaston, Borrowash, West Hallam and Heanor all feature as the Tour heads through the roads of Derbyshire for the first time since 2015, crossing into Nottinghamshire at Eastwood and continuing through Hucknall, Ravenshead, Blidworth, Southwell and Tuxford, before crossing the River Trent to race south to the finish alongside Sconce and Devon Park in Newark-on-Trent.

The Tour of Britain is a multi-stage cycling race conducted on British roads in which participants race across Great Britain to complete the race in the fastest time.

The event dates back to the first British stage races held just after the Second World War. Since then various different events have been described as the Tour of Britain, including the Milk Race, the Kellogg’s Tour of Britain and the PruTour. The most recent version of the Tour of Britain began in 2004 as part of the UCI Europe Tour. The 2024 race is the twentieth anniversary of the modern incarnation of the race, starting in Kelso, Scotland and finishing in Felixstowe, Suffolk.

  • Men’s Tour of Britain Route Revealed (Stages 5 & 6)

tour of britain route newark

The routes for the final pair of stages of this year’s Men’s Tour of Britain have been announced, to complete the stage details for September’s 20th edition of Britain’s biggest professional cycle race.

Men’s Tour of Britain Route Revealed (Stages 5 & 6)

Stages five and six of the race will see the men’s peloton visit West Northamptonshire for the first time, for a 147-kilometre (91-mile) stage starting out from the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus and finishing on Derngate in Northampton town centre, before concluding a day later on familiar roads in East Suffolk with a 158-kilometre (98.5-mile) leg from Lowestoft to Felixstowe.

Three intermediate sprints, each with time bonuses, on the final leg at Beccles, Aldeburgh, and Grundisburgh, will ensure riders are fighting for the bonus seconds right down to the finish line on Sea Road in Felixstowe.

Commenting on the route announcement, Men’s Tour of Britain Race Director Rod Ellingworth, said: “The penultimate stage of this year’s race is in area new to the Men’s Tour of Britain, which is always exciting as it means that the majority of the peloton will be unfamiliar with the roads that we will be using.”

“With the stage being on a Saturday and its central location, we are expecting a lot of fans to be at the roadside to cheer the riders on. With the start on the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus so close to the finish line in the town centre, it will make for a great location for fans of all ages to come down and see the start and finish of the stage and to make a day out of it.

Looking ahead to the final stage, Ellingworth added: “This year’s final stage of the Men’s Tour of Britain is deceptive, with plenty of challenges to overcome before our 2024 champion can be crowned on Sea Road in Felixstowe. Suffolk has always provided great racing in the Tour, and this year will be no different, with sections along the exposed coastline that will be a real challenge if the wind blows, while the three intermediate sprints will ensure competitive racing thanks to the time bonuses on offer, which could become very important if the overall lead is slender going into the last day.

“Our thanks go to our partners at East Suffolk Council, and in both Lowestoft and Felixstowe, for hosting the final stage of this year’s Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men.”

The stage will get underway at 11:00 from the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus, where a full day of activities and entertainment is planned, including race coverage on big screens, just a short walk away from the town centre finish location.

During the stage riders will tackle the final pair of categorised King of the Mountains climbs of the 2024 race, at Newnham Hill and Bullshill, just south of Daventry, and an intermediate sprint at Holcot, at the eastern end of the Pitsford Water causeway.

Leaving the Waterside Campus the stage heads west from Northampton, through Daventry, and then onto a loop south of the town over the two King of the Mountains climbs and through Abthorpe, Wappenham, Helmdon, Culworth, Byfield and Hellidon, before looping around Northampton via Watford, West Haddon, Naseby, Kelmarsh and Brixworth for the approach to the finish via Sywell and Ecton.

The stage is expected to finish with a sprint in Northampton town centre between 14:23 and 15:05.

While it is the first time that the men’s Tour has come to Northampton, the town’s Derngate hosted the first ever stage finish of the women’s Tour, won by Swedish rider Emma Johansson, in May 2014, and Daventry in West Northamptonshire has twice also hosted the women’s race, with a start in 2017 and a stage finish in 2018, won by Coryn Labecki.

STAGE SIX East Suffolk will hold the final stage of Britain’s biggest professional cycle race on Sunday 8 September for the first time, with a 158-kilometre (98.5-mile) stage between Lowestoft and Felixstowe.

tour of britain route newark

Stage six will get underway at 10:30 from Lowestoft’s Promenade, the first time that the town has hosted the Men’s Tour of Britain, with the stage heading inland via Beccles and Bungay, and then south through Halesworth, Framlingham, and Saxmundham, before racing along the Suffolk coast between Thorpeness and Aldeburgh.

The second half of the route takes in Snape, Wickham Market, Kesgrave, and Martlesham, before a run in and finish on Sea Road in Felixstowe familiar to riders from 12-months ago, when Wout van Aert took a stage win in Suffolk. The stage is expected to finish between 14:08 and 14:53.

The stage will feature three intermediate sprints – each with time bonuses – at Beccles, Aldeburgh, and Grundisburgh, that will help shape the outcome of who follows in the wheel tracks of Wout van Aert as Men’s Tour of Britain champion.

Tour of Britain returns to the North York Moors

The Tour of Britain is returning to the North York Moors, for the first time since the dramatic finish in Duncombe Park, Helmsley in 2022 where Tom Pidcock was pipped at the line. Stage two on Wednesday 4 September of the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain 2024 will depart from Darlington, winding its way through the North York Moors National Park before heading north at Whitby skirting the coast to the finish line in Redcar. The Tour of Britain is the UK's biggest professional bike race and a UCI ProSeries event.

Within the National Park there will be a series of unclassified climbs around Commondale, Castleton, and Danby, before the first King of the Mountains climb above Ugglebarnby, averaging over 8% across its one-kilometre length.

The race then drops down to Robin Hood’s Bay, climbs back out before heading north past Whitby Abbey to descend into the famous North Yorkshire seaside town.

Stage two’s final categorised climb is the 1.7 kilometres of Lythe Bank, averaging 7.7% as it ascends from Sandsend, ultimately taking the race past Staithes into Redcar & Cleveland, where it will tackle a lap made up of many of the roads used in June’s Lloyds Bank British National Road Race Championships.

After over 2,500 metres of ascent in the stage, the final few kilometres alongside the North Sea between Marske-by-the-Sea and Redcar will offer some respite, but the exposed nature of coast road means that the wind could pose a final challenge to overcome in the home stretch to Zetland Park.

Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers) will race in the Tour of Britain, becoming the second gold medallist from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games to confirm his participation in the race.

The 25-year-old joins the likes of double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel, and former race winner Julian Alaphilippe (both Soudal Quick-Step) on the provisional start list for the 20 th edition of Britain’s biggest professional cycle race.

Can't catch the action live? Worry not, there'll also be a one hour highlights show each evening. ITV4 and ITVX will be broadcasting live coverage of every stage of the Tour of Britain.

Planning ahead for the day

Some of the best viewing will be in the Esk Valley, given the challenging climbs the race pace will be relatively slower. Danby Lodge National Park Centre in the heart of the Esk Valley will be a great place to base yourself, with activities, walks and a café – the route will past right behind the building before heading up the climb towards Danby Beacon. Have a look at the new accessible adventure playground, Danby Den.

British Cycling provide a detailed route guide for the stage, including elevation profiles.

If travelling by car, please park sensibility, not blocking the race route or access to property.  Parking restrictions will be in place across the race route to ensure the safety of the riders, support vehicles, spectators and other road users.

Rolling road closures along the race route will generally last no more than 30-45 minutes within, apart from at the start and finish, up-to-date details on predicted road closures are available from   North Yorkshire Council and Redcar and Cleveland 's website

Police motorcycles will close off the race route before the riders are expected. Roads will reopen after the last support vehicles have passed.

Fast rail and travel options make the National Park an easy place to get to - options for travel via fast rail on the Esk Valley Rail line , between Middlesborough and Whitby or North Yorkshire Moors Railway between Pickering and Whitby.

Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men 2024 Stage Six: Key Locations

This is it, the final stage of the 2024 lloyds bank tour of britain men, hosted in stunning east suffolk..

Starting in the vibrant seaside town of Lowestoft, our riders will wind their way south taking in some of the most scenic areas the area has to offer before finishing in Felixstowe, a town familiar to Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain followers as the location for stage five of the 2023 edition.

As well as over 100 of the world’s top cyclists battling it out for victory in the 20th edition of Britain’s biggest professional cycle race, East Suffolk will be welcoming fans to both locations with a range of free events and activities for all the family.

If you’re looking to catch the final stage action in person, then check out some of the best locations and what you can expect there, below.

Lowestoft will provide the perfect welcome to fans and riders alike on Sunday 8th September, with the free-to-attend First Light Festival running from 09:00 to 15:00 in the town, centred upon the Royal Green next to East Point Pavilion where the professional teams will begin to arrive just after 09:00.

Fans can welcome the teams between 09:50 and 10:50 as they’re presented to the crowds on the podium, before the stage starts at 11:00. After the race leaves Lowestoft, there’s plenty of fun, sport and community activities on offer including a BMX pump track, a series of creative and educational workshops, fun physical activities and more.

Intermediate Sprints

With the King of the Mountains jersey wrapped up by stage five of the race, all eyes will be on the three intermediate sprints as riders look to secure points points and time bonuses in their bid to take the red Points jersey.

The first intermediate sprint can be found in the market town of Beccles just 14.5 kilometres into the stage and fans can expect the riders to pass through at roughly 11:40.

The riders will then take on another 75.8 kilometres of East Suffolk road before reaching the next intermediate sprint in the beautiful seaside town of Adelburgh at approximately 13:29. Following this sprint, riders will turn sharply back inland navigating their way to the final intermediate sprint of the 2024 Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain in Grundisburgh at roughly 14:20.

With the final intermediate sprint settled, the riders will be eyeing an exciting finish on Sea Road in Felixstowe to crown the 2024 Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men champion. Fans can expect the riders to reach the finish area at approximately 15:06 and for those that want to see the action unfold ahead of this a big screen will be showing the ITV4 coverage live.

The fan village in Felixstowe will also feature a number of other exciting free activities throughout the day such as circus performances, a 10km community ride and  presence from race title sponsors Lloyds Bank, plus British Cycling partner’s Alé Cycling, Vittoria, Ridgeback, and Shimano, with the latter providing free bike safety checks for fans, plus the chance to try food from Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men hospitality partners Gaucho.

Away from the finish line, viewers should look out for the eye-catching artwork created by pupils at Langer Primary Academy in Felixstowe with help from local artist Jim Lait, to celebrate the final stage of the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men.

How else can I watch the action?

Fans wanting to see Remco Evenepoel, Julian Alaphilippe, and more in action firsthand at the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men can now book and enjoy a range of premium hospitality opportunities and experiences, available via Sportive Breaks here .

If you’re unable to make it to East Suffolk to see the 2024 Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Champion crowned, live flag to flag coverage will be available on ITV4 and ITVX in the UK, and around the world via other broadcasters, as well as a live stream on the British Cycling YouTube channel.
