Cruises to Scotland

Scotland cruises bring you to a world rich in legend, history, and extraordinary beauty. Mist-shrouded mountains are reflected in glassy lochs. Wild deer graze on hillsides purple with heather. Towering cliffs plunge into water that is as turquoise as anywhere in the Caribbean. Brooding castles lie amid dense forest, guarding the secrets of the centuries.

A cruise to Scotland offers you a thrilling range of places to visit. Stroll the Royal Mile in chic Edinburgh and tour Edinburgh Castle. Join a whisky tasting—you’ll find opportunities to sample the country’s finest at every turn. Take a cruise along the tranquil shores of Loch Lomond, hemmed in by forested, sometimes snow-dusted mountains. Further north, the islands of Orkney are dotted with fascinating Neolithic remains, while Shetland is famed for its birdlife, white-sand beaches, craggy mountains, and shaggy little ponies. Scotland and its islands are without doubt a highlight of Europe cruises in every sense, from history and nature to cuisine and culture.

Scotland Cruise Highlights

Haggis & whisky.

Scotland’s cuisine is unique, with specialties you’ll want to try. Haggis—a dish of spiced meat and offal—is a classic, served with neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes). The game and seafood here are spectacular. You’ll find opportunities for whisky tasting everywhere; at the 150-year-old Glengoyne Distillery, you can even create your own blend. Have a “wee dram” on your oatmeal in the morning, or try a whisky-flavored “tablet”, which is similar to fudge.

Historic Castles

Scotland is dotted with magnificent, turreted castles and stately homes, many of which are open to the public. The fairytale Inveraray Castle, on Loch Fyne, is home to the Duke and Duchess of Argyll and houses priceless treasures in its soaring Armoury Hall. From Glasgow, you could also spend a day at the imposing fortress of Stirling Castle. Another option is to travel to Edinburgh and explore Edinburgh Castle, perched on the black crag of Castle Rock.

Remote Islands

Cruises to Scotland visit Kirkwall, the capital of Orkney, and Lerwick in Shetland. Both are remote archipelagos scattered off the north coast. In Shetland, you’ll find jaunty, red timber-framed houses that cling to the treeless hills and seals basking on creamy-white beaches under vast skies. In Orkney, meanwhile, you can explore five-thousand-year-old Skara Brae, one of the best-preserved Neolithic villages in the world.

Featured Scotland Cruise Ports

Edinburgh, scotland.

Beautiful Edinburgh lies on the shores of the Firth of Forth, the dramatic Edinburgh Castle at its heart, which clings to Castle Rock. Stroll the Royal Mile, lined with historic buildings and medieval alleys. Visit the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Scottish residence of the royal family. Royal enthusiasts can also tour the Royal Yacht Britannia for an inside glimpse into the life of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Make time for a whisky tasting while you’re in the Scottish capital.

Glasgow (Greenock), Scotland

Imposing architecture, world-class museums, and a lively pub scene make Glasgow a captivating city to explore. Follow the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Trail to admire the work of the city’s pioneering architect. Gaze at the Monets and Renoirs at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and admire the blooms at the impressive Botanic Gardens. Out of town, take a trip to Inveraray Castle, gazing over the shore of serene Loch Fyne, or visit Stirling Castle, dating back to the 12th century.

Lerwick, Scotland

A remote archipelago off the northern tip of Scotland, Shetland is a landscape of towering cliffs, sweeping beaches inhabited only by seals, and grassy hills where hardy Shetland ponies graze. In Lerwick, the bustling little capital, speed through 5,000 years of history at the excellent Shetland Museum and visit the Textile Museum to learn about the islands’ famous knitwear. Take a trip to the fascinating Jarlshof archaeological site to see settlements dating back to the Stone Age and Iron Age.

Scotland Cruise Itineraries

Cruise itineraries featuring ports in Scotland last 11 or 12 nights. There are multiple choices of itinerary available. You could sail from Rotterdam on a cruise visiting Ireland, Liverpool, Glasgow, and Lerwick, in the Shetland Islands. Alternatively, sail from Rotterdam to Kirkwall in Orkney, Iceland, and Lerwick. Round-trip Iceland and Ireland cruises from Southampton include a day in Kirkwall, while Iceland and Scotland itineraries include both Glasgow and Kirkwall.

Itineraries

Why cruise to scotland with celebrity cruises.

On board a Celebrity cruise to Scotland, you’ll find a spa, a state-of-the-art gym, and live music and entertainment all over the ship. Multiple restaurants and bars offer everything from delicious sushi and seafood to French classics. If you’ve chosen Celebrity Apex, then take in sweeping views of the wild Scottish Highlands from the vantage point of the Magic Carpet. On Celebrity Silhouette, get into the spirit of the destination with a Highlander cocktail featuring Scotch whisky at the intimate World Class Bar. On either ship, choose The Retreat ® for suite accommodation, and try signature dishes created by chef Daniel Boulud in the exclusive Luminae at The Retreat.

Marvel at the highlights of Scotland and its islands as you explore Neolithic ruins, majestic castles, whisky distilleries, towering mountains, and serene lochs. Whether you’re shopping for tartan, tracing your family’s roots, following in the steps of the Vikings, or learning why Scotland is so beloved by Britain’s modern royals, you’ll be endlessly surprised by this multilayered country.

The Majestic Line has been hosting Scottish cruising holidays on the waters off the West Coast for 20 years. Most of our cruises depart from Oban, gateway to the Highlands and the Islands of the Outer and Inner Hebrides – sailing in these waters is the best way to explore the islands and the beautiful coastline of Scotland. Our five small cruise ships are beautiful floating hotels and have been designed to access remote and sheltered anchorages that larger boats find inaccessible. You can find out more about where we go on our Cruising Area.

The Scottish Small Ship Cruising Holiday

Our four small cruise ships offer you a truly unique experience, a Scottish holiday with a difference. Our converted fishing trawlers, Glen Massan and Glen Tarsan , provide accommodation for up to 11 guests, whilst our purpose-built vessels, Glen Etive and Glen Shiel , can accommodate a maximum of 12 guests. Each of those boats has a crew of four onboard; Skipper, Chef, Engineer and Steward.

Our crews provide the very best in Scottish Hospitality and do their best to ensure your cruise runs smoothly. Meals are freshly prepared on board utilizing the wonderful Scottish Larder with our Chefs focusing on locally sourced seasonal produce – seafood is of course a highlight for many on our cruises with mussels from Loch Spelve, langoustine and occasionally a lobster caught in the creels that we keep on board.

The Majestic Line offers a choice of 17 different cruise itineraries from 3 nights , 6 nights or 10 nights . We cruise waters surrounding some of Scotland's iconic islands such as Islay, Jura, Mull, Skye, St Kilda, Staffa and Iona, the small isles of Rum, Muck and Eigg. You can go ashore to enjoy the fantastic scenery, take a walk, visit one of the malt whisky distilleries or gin distilleries, watch the local wildlife. We also operate a river cruise through the Caledonian Canal and Neptune’s Staircase to Loch Ness and sail to Inverness. Discover our Cruises .

The seas off the West Coast of Scotland provide an incredible habitat for all sorts of marine wildlife and our guests regularly see dolphins, porpoises, seals, basking sharks, minke whales, orca, not to mention the amazing sea birds from puffins and petrels to gannets and guillemots. Find out more about the species we regularly see at Wildlife of the West Coast of Scotland and Hebrides .

See for yourself what small ship cruising is all about, visit the royal palace of holyroodhouse, royal palace of holyroodhouse.

At the opposite end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile from Edinburgh Castle stands the Royal Palace of Holyroodhouse (Holyrood Palace), the official residence of the monarch while in Scotland. The earliest part of the palace dates to the 16th century, when Mary, Queen of Scots resided here; see her rooms and more on Tauck's early-opening visit, available when members of the Royal Family are not in residence. The palace was transformed into a modern royal residence by the current Queen's grandfather, King George V. You'll also enjoy the royal gardens and wild Holyrood Park.

Sightseeing choices on Orkney Islands

Orkney islands choices include the neolithic village of skara brae.

You'll have several choices for sightseeing on a visit to the Orkney Islands. The heartland of the Neolithic North is a bleak, mysterious place that has made Orkney a magnet for archaeologists, historians and researchers from many decades past to present day, as they continue to walk the island measuring and excavating its original Stone Age sites. Your visit here includes several of the most important monuments that make up the heart of this region including the stone-chambered tomb of Maeshowe, the Ring of Brodgar, and the settlement of Skara Brae, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you'll gain an up-close understanding of a land that has been inhabited for at least 8,500 years.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much stricter in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may not be accessible during daytime travel.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

Scotland's climate is temperate and, as in the rest of the U. K., the weather tends to be unpredictable. In general, Scotland tends to be cool, damp and cloudy, and is colder on average than the rest of the U.K. The coldest areas are the highlands, and the northern latitude has short winter days and very long summer evenings. The east coast experiences more sunshine, but colder winters, compared to the west. The average high temperatures for May through September range from 55 to 65˚F (13 to 18˚C) and the average low temperatures range from 45 to 55˚F (7 to 13˚C). Glasgow on the west coast has almost 50% more rain per year than Edinburgh.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings (Necessary Gear) who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. Formal wear is never required.

In the ship's main dining room, slacks and a collared shirt are acceptable for gentlemen, and for women, slacks/skirt and a blouse are appropriate.   We have found, however, that the international mix of travelers on board tend to dress somewhat more formally than one might expect.   Thus, you may prefer to wear a jacket and tie or a cocktail dress for special evenings like the Captain's welcome and farewell dinners aboard the ship and for the special welcome and farewell dinners at the beginning and end of your journey.   For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing swimming shorts, bathing suits, t-shirts, tennis shoes or flip-flops.

Valet laundry and dry-cleaning services are available for a fee at the hotels. Onboard, valet laundry and pressing services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the cruise ship other than those prescribed and stocked by the ship's physician.

Hairdryers are available at the hotels and aboard the ship. For safety reasons, curling and clothes irons are not permitted aboard the ship.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for a cruise:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (VERY IMPORTANT)
  • Hiking boots for those who choose to hike
  • Trekking poles or a walking stick
  • Water shoes or sneakers for those who choose to go on the rib boat (recommended)
  • Rainwear, such as a raincoat and rain hat, plus a collapsible umbrella, waterproof shoes/boots
  • Long pants, fleece jacket or warm sweater; light sweater for warmer days
  • Warm hat, gloves and socks (It can be cool and windy on the Scottish Isles)
  • Sport coat for men (with tie suggested for Captain's dinners) and slacks/dress for women for evening wear
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, chargers and extra memory cards
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Small flashlight
  • Daypack for your photographic equipment or other belongings
  • Washcloth - not all European hotels provide washcloths, so you may want to bring one along.  A package of pre-moistened towelettes is an excellent alternative.
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Prescription medicines (an adequate supply to last your entire journey), and written copies of your prescriptions from your doctor.  While it may be possible to refill prescriptions during your journey, the availability of refills cannot be guaranteed.  What's more, refilling prescriptions in foreign countries can be difficult and time-consuming.
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your ship cabin while traveling

Embark in Glasgow (Greenock)

Start in Scotland's stylish city of culture

A former industrial powerhouse, Glasgow has reinvented itself as a cultural hot spot, packed with museums, galleries and parks. Discover the splendid Art Nouveau architecture of Charles Rennie Mackintosh before your expedition cruise begins.

You’ll embark in Glasgow (Greenock) where MS Spitsbergen, one of our smaller vessels purpose-built for close-up exploration, will be waiting for you. Get to know the ship before meeting the Expedition Team – your guides for the adventure ahead. Enjoy your first onboard dinner as we set sail.

scottish islands cruise 2024

Beautiful Isle of Arran

Enjoy wildlife spotting on Arran

Welcome to the Isle of Arran, known for its heather-cloaked landscapes. Why not try a hike with views of the craggy peaks of Goat Fell and see if you can spot Scotland’s ‘Big Five’: the Golden Eagle, red deer, red squirrel, otter and harbour seal, all of which can be found on Arran.

Explore the woodland and gardens of Brodick Castle, and marvel at the Neolithic treasures and huge upright slabs at the Machrie Moor Stone Circle. Your stop wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Isle of Arran Distillery and a taste of their distinctive malt.

scottish islands cruise 2024

Islay's whisky and nature

Fire up your spirit of discovery on 'Whisky Island'

Islay, the ‘Queen of the Hebrides’, is the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides, with rugged uplands and coastline . The island is the proud home of world-famous peaty single malts – but that's far from the only reason to visit.

Islay is a wildlife haven, home to over 200 species of birds – including oystercatchers, gannets and Golden Eagles. From its sandy beaches, you can sometimes spot dolphins and basking sharks.

Port Ellen is the gateway to three of the island’s nine distilleries. Of course, no trip to Islay is complete without a 'wee dram' from one of these famous and historic whisky producers, including Laphroaig and Ardbeg.

Sustainable Isle of Gigha

Discover a slice of paradise in the Hebrides

Today our Scottish isles cruise takes us to tiny Gigha (pronounced ‘Gee-a’), a little sandy slice of paradise in the Hebrides. The island is community-owned, bought by its 163 residents in 2002, and has a sustainable local economy. Why not try some of its seafood, such as Gigha halibut and oysters.

At only seven miles long, the only way to get around Gigha is on foot or by hiring a bike. Visit the woodland gardens of Achamore House and admire the colourful rhododendrons. Then explore white sandy coves and the turquoise waters along the coast, such as the Bàgh Rubha Ruaidh and Bàgh na Dòirlinne beaches.

scottish islands cruise 2024

The spirit of Iona

See Iona's sacred abbey and Fingal's Cave on Staffa

Your adventure continues to Iona, off the coast of Mull in the Inner Hebrides. You can visit the restored 6th century abbey, one of Scotland's oldest and most sacred Christian pilgrimage sites. Or enjoy a hike with the Expedition Team up Dùn I for breathtaking views of St Columba's Bay – and take a sip from the 'Well of Eternal Youth'.

We’ll also sail to the Treshnish Isles – home to Atlantic Puffins, razorbills and grey seals. At nearby Fingal's Cave, marvel at the hexagonal basalt columns, superb natural acoustics and mesmerising, coloured waters.

scottish islands cruise 2024

Expedition day

Explore the tranquil southernmost islands of the Outer Hebrides

Today, we’ll explore the southernmost islands of the Outer Hebrides.

We’ll attempt a nature landing on the white sand beaches of Vatersay, located at the beginning of the renowned Hebridean Way. The mighty wind and waves of the Atlantic have carved sheltered harbours here, allowing settlements to arise as far back as the Neolithic period. Explore the rich history and admire the tranquil beauty of this tiny island, before heading south to remote Mingulay.

Abandoned by its resident population a century ago, Mingulay is home to some of the largest bird colonies in the Hebrides. Puffins, guillemots, fulmars, kittiwakes and more make their nests across the island, including on the towering Carnan Cliffs, a protected breeding area. If conditions allow, we’ll take our small expedition boats around the island on the lookout for some of these magnificent birds.

scottish islands cruise 2024

Stalwart Stornoway

Experience ’Scotland’s Stonehenge’ and find your tweed

We travel next to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides, home of the famous Harris Tweed cloth. We'll visit Gothic-style Lews Castle, with its trails and fantastic views. Don’t miss 'Scotland's Stonehenge', the 5,000-year-old Callanish Standing Stones, and Dùn Carloway, the best-preserved Iron Age broch in Scotland.

We'll also cruise the wild and beautiful Shiant Isles, a tiny archipelago set in the Minch Strait. One of the most important breeding colonies for seabirds in Europe, keep an eye out for European Shags, Common Eiders, Northern Fulmars and Great Skuas in the surrounding waters or on volcanic ledges.

scottish islands cruise 2024

Isles of beauty

Get close to dramatic scenery and wonderful wildlife on Skye and Eigg

We’ll sail to Loch Scavaig on the Isle of Skye, where dramatic scenery surrounds us. “The wildest scene in the Highlands” – that's how the Victorian poet Lord Tennyson described Loch Coruisk and the surrounding craggy peaks of the Cuillin Mountains. We'll put on our hiking boots to explore the loch with the Expedition Team.

Our next stop is the remote Isle of Eigg, home to incredible wildlife. You might spot Golden and White-Tailed Eagles, Red Throated Divers, stonechats, seals, dolphins and porpoises. Stroll along the white sands of Laig Bay to the quartz beach where the sand sings, or hike to the top of An Sgùrr.

scottish islands cruise 2024

Mull’s Colourful Fishing Port

Get ready for the dreamy beauty of the Sound of Mull

Brightly coloured Georgian houses line the waterfront in the picturesque fishing port of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. Learn about the local heritage at the Mull Museum, try a dram of local whisky, stroll around the loch in Aros Park or pay a visit to the Baliscate Standing Stones.

The Isle of Mull is a magnet for birders. It has the highest breeding density of Golden Eagles in Europe, and White-tailed Eagles can often be seen soaring above the coast. We may also explore Loch Sunart, a Marine Protected Area known for otters, dolphins and porpoises.

scottish islands cruise 2024

Colonsay birds and blooms

Immerse yourself in unspoilt island beauty

Take a coastal walk on the Isle of Colonsay and enjoy breathtaking views from Kiloran Bay and Plaide Mhòr. Or if you’re lucky enough to be in a kayak, you may catch sight of whales, porpoises and dolphins.

Flora thrives on Colonsay, with over 400 species of plants present. You’ll see some of them in the woodland gardens of Colonsay House. It's a paradise for birdwatchers, with choughs, Red Northern Divers, eagles, fulmars, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes and shags among the birds you can spot. Be sure to listen out for the rattle of the elusive corncrake.

scottish islands cruise 2024

Back to Glasgow

Your island-hopping odyssey comes to an end in Scotland’s biggest city

Your adventure to the wild Scottish Isles ends back in Glasgow (Greenock).

Lying on the shores of the Firth of Clyde with views across to the high hills of Argyll, Glasgow’s impressive fishing and shipping heritage is manifest in the Victorian architecture of the west end of town. It’s well worth exploring this area some more if you have time before you head home.

Cruise from Scotland

Join small ships Lord of the Glens and Lord of the Highlands in Inverness for a cruise along the dramatic Caledonian Canal through the majestic lochs of Scotland’s Great Glen, including Loch Ness to Fort William in the shadow of mighty Ben Nevis. Continue on to the hauntingly beautiful Hebridean Islands of Mull, Skye, Iona and Eigg. Visit colourful Tobermory and imposing Duart Castle on Mull, revel in the peace and quiet at Iona’s historic abbey and enjoy a drink at the most remote pub in the British Isles at Inverie before crossing the sea to Skye and the picturesque town of Portree.

Luxurious 50-passenger Hebridean Princess offers itineraries from Oban exploring the beautiful Hebridean Islands of Canna, one of the earliest Christian settlements, Skye, the largest of the Inner Hebrides and Eigg, owned by its community since 1997. The ship also calls at ports off the beaten track including the privately owned Shiant Isles and the remote Orkney Islands.

Itineraries visiting Scotland

Cruises around the British Isles often visit the remote Orkneys, Outer Hebrides and Isle of Mull as well as the town of Invergordon on the shores of the Cromarty Firth and Newhaven, gateway to the grand city of Edinburgh.

Lerwick, the capital of the rugged Shetland Islands and Kirkwall, capital of the remote Orkneys are visited en-route to the breathtaking Norwegian fjords and Iceland, the Land of Ice and Fire. Lerwick was founded as an unofficial marketplace to service 17th-century Dutch herring fleets. Today, it is home to the Shetland Museum which features archaeological and maritime exhibits. The town of Kirkwall is dominated by the magnificent St Magnus Cathedral, Britain’s most northerly cathedral and known as the Light in the North.

The city of Edinburgh is visited from the ports of Rosyth and Leith, the latter being home to the Royal Yacht Britannia, now open to visitors. Elegant Princes Street is lined with shops, and overlooked by cliff-top Edinburgh Castle. The famous Royal Mile stretches from the castle to the Palace of Holyrood House. Tours can be taken by open-top bus around the city, which has an old town and numerous museums and galleries.

The city of Glasgow is served by the port of Greenock. Glasgow has a variety of shopping areas - the new Buchanan Galleries near famous Sauchiehall Street, the elegant Argyll Arcade and open markets. The Glasgow School of Art, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintoch, offers tours, and Glasgow is also home to the magnificent Burrell Collection. The Museum of Transport has a fascinating collection of exhibits and Clyde-built ship models, and in the harbour visitors can board the restored Tall Ship Glenlee.

Invergordon

Invergordon in Easter Ross is a gateway to the Scottish Highlands and lies on the Cromarty Firth, an area of natural beauty with a wide diversity of marine and birdlife, including a colony of bottlenose dolphins. Nearby are 14th-century Cawdor Castle and gardens, the site of the Battle of Culloden and several distilleries, including Glenmorangie. There is little of interest in Invergordon itself.

The colourful waterfront houses of Tobermory are instantly recognisable. It is a small harbour town on the island of Mull, with galleries selling artwork and jewellery by local craftspeople and a choice of cafes. There is a short coastal walk to Aros Park and to the lighthouse where there are views to the Ardnamurchan peninsula. Further afield on Mull are Glengorm, Torosay and Duart Castles and gardens.

We recently returned from the splendid Scottish Highlands and Islands Cruise and must say that it is one of the best cruises we have ever experienced

Initially whilst booking we thought the price high compared with other river cruises. We were later to realise how unique the Caledonian Canal journey really was and taking into account that the excursions were covered by the price we finally felt that the holiday was value for money.

The scenery was stunning and views of Ben Nevis were magnificent!

The Crew were always so pleasant and this led to a very happy atmosphere aboard the ship. Brian the Hotel manager kept us all amused with his talks and his attention to every detail ensured that events went like clockwork. Konia our guide was a fount of knowledge and added even greater interest to excursions. Seeing so many Dolphins in the open sea was an extra bonus!

Above all the food was so good and varied, fresh, locally produced and well presented that this really made our holiday!

We travelled in June 2013 from Inverness to Kyle for 7 days. The competence of the sailing crew cannot be doubted - the locks on the Caledonian canal leave only inches each side of the vessel yet there was never the a hint of a ding which meant operating the vessel was most precise. The weather was generally kind, it rained when it didnt matter and our times on-shore were mostly dry, if a bit cool. To be able to see and learn of so much of Scotland in such a short period was a delight as was being in the company of such agreeable fellow passengers. The ship is very pleasant: comfortable and reasonably spacious public areas, cabins lacked nothing and even had plenty of space to stow luggage. But the real bonus was the staff who made our holiday such a pleasure. Quite how the confined galley could magic 52 covers for every mealtime at such a consistently high standard is a mystery. The serving staff were attentive, cheerful and efficient and worked well both as individuals and together. Together with the Hotel Manager who seemed to be everywhere all the time, they are a superb credit to the operators of Lord of the Glens - professional is the word that seems to come most to mind so bravo to all! While not very experienced cruisers, we have been on 5 or 6 and this experience beats all of them by far - for us, it set a standard others should strive to match.

An absolutely wonderful holiday. The itinerary was great, the scenery incredible and the ship very comfortable. However special thanks must go to the Captain, Brian, (the hotel manager) and crew of the Lord of the Glens whose hard work, dedication and enthusiasm made it such an enjoyable experience. Your tour manager, Konia, was brilliant and gave us so much information about everywhere and everything. The quick and responsive action when our coach broke down on the way back to Inverness showed how efficiently everyone works together.

We have done and enjoyed a great deal of river cruising but this trip was something unique and special and one which we very much hope to repeat.

Many thanks to all concerned and to all at Blue Water Holidays - the booking arrangements were easy and clear and information and advice freely given.

Summer Solstice Arctic Circle Crossing Cruise

View of solar eclipse.

When you are in the path of totality to watch a solar eclipse from a cruise ship, it is an awe-inspiring sight. After two highly successful solar eclipse sailings in 2024, three ships from our Holland America Line fleet will be positioned under the path of totality for the Aug. 12, 2026, total solar eclipse. You could join us in the Mediterranean aboard Oosterdam to view the eclipse off the coast of Spain.

If you prefer a summer vacation with cooler temperatures, join us on a coolcation in Northern Europe, where you can experience the total solar eclipse off the coast of Iceland. You can also sail aboard Zuiderdam for the popular Voyage of the Vikings cruise to take in the sights of the solar eclipse.

Here are highlights of each solar eclipse cruise itinerary:

Join us on Rotterdam and Nieuw Statendam and explore Norway with an overnight in Alta, which is known as the “City of the Northern Lights.”

Join us for our 14-Day Arctic Circle Crossing: North Cape Solstice aboard Nieuw Statendam, departing June 12, 2026, roundtrip from Dover or June 13, 2026, roundtrip from Rotterdam .
