Well, Gr8Tops has finally anounced their pricing on those Safari Tops: This email contains graphics, so if you don't see them, view it in your browser. LJ Safari Cab Available GR8TOPS is thrilled to announce that the first of our new Safari Cab full tops for LJs are now available for purchase. See the details below on this exciting new offering, soon to come for TJs as well. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LJ Safari Cab Top Available GR8TOPS will have an initial run of 6 LJ Safari Cab full tops available for purchase and installation starting March 8th. This initial product run is for the Wrangler Unlimited models made from 2004 to 2006 known as the LJ. These tops feature: modular design with bolt-together sides, door surrounds and roof panel sliding/screened side windows and four additional small windows easily removable rear barn door upper insert that opens with the tailgate bedlined interior on all panels exterior finish options including smooth sanded, body color paint or gelcoat For this first run of tops, all buyers will be required to bring their LJs to our shop in South Carolina for GR8TOPS to complete the top installation for purposes of photography and documenting the installations. Buyers selected will need to make a good faith deposit of $1000. There will be no shipping or pickup of this first run of tops. The pricing of the tops is as follows: top including black textured roof panel, side panels, door surrounds, rear door upper, all windows and hardware: $4,100 installation: $600 painting/gelcoat door surrounds, side panels and rear door upper (white or black gelcoat or single factory Jeep paint color): $500 For people purchasing one of these first run tops, GR8TOPS will waive the basic installation fees (any additional services desired will be priced as usual and can be discussed when setting up an installation appointment.) Due to the huge amount of interest we’ve had in these tops and to try and be as fair as possible to those interested, GR8TOPS will conduct a random drawing from all registrants entered by midnight on 3/1. We will email the selected people ASAP to confirm their selection and will follow up with a phone call to finalize details and arrange installation timing. To be entered into the drawing for a chance to purchase one of these first tops, use the link below to provide your information.

Looks like I am going to have to find $4k somewhere in my budget in teh next few years. Don't think I will be able to make the drawing deadline. Wonder how much it would cost to have them glass in a thin steel plate in the roof as a ground plane for my Amature Radio and CB antennas?
I really like the looks of the top, but that's an awful steep price, IMHO.

Agreed. I can't imagine my LJ will ever enjoy one of these.

Safari Hardtop from Gr8tops

  • Add to quote

I know this has been discussed on here, so I thought I'd post for anyone interested. http://charlotte.craigslist.org/cto/4240532854.html

Nice top. Nice jeep. Price is too high for that old of a jeep tho.

gr8tops safari top

They are expecting the Safari top to lure in an unsuspecting victim. I know it says it is worth 3800 dollars, but even if it was worth that much the total price of the jeep should only be around 8000. Anyone with any knowledge would not buy that jeep for that price no matter what top was on it. You can find much newer and lower mileage TJs all over South Carolina right now.

He just paid 8900 for on eBay last week... Jschreb posted a link to it in one of his threads Edit http://m.ebay.com/itm?itemId=261346912788 Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 using JeepForum

I don't think it sold on ebay. The ebay ad says to email them through the gr8tops email and so does the Craigslist ad. I think it is still gr8tops trying to sell it.

That's a pretty snazzy lookin sahara. I think it would look better if the top of the hardtop was painted black though

Don't get me wrong, I like the top and the jeep, but accessories do not add value to vehicles so it is only worth what the blue book price is.

LJ Hardtop: OEM vs Rally vs GR8TOPS

gr8tops safari top

That settles the matter. I want the Gr8top safari. Now, do I sell my 86 Tula AKS-74U, or my SAN StG-553??????

skrelnik said: Jeff's is similar but different than the gr8tops top. After doing endless diligence I found out that Jeff is the designer of this top but licensed out to Matt at gr8tops. Jeff's has different features like those roll up sides. The gr8tops version cannot do that without some sort of modification. Click to expand...

jscherb said: That's correct. Think of my Safari Cab as the "concept car version", it has a lot of features that Gr8Tops decided not to put into the production version, such as the roll-up soft sides. If someone buys a Gr8Tops version and wants to implement some of the features that are part of my version I can provide info on how to do any of the features. Since I now have the Top I would love to hear any feedback on how to implement the soft roll-up sides and any other ideas you may have. I would also love to know how you attached the rear window to the gate. I did not use a nutsert and instead used a bolt that goes through the back part of the gate - not all the way through the gate. I was thinking about going all the way through the gate to make it easier to take off, but I would love to hear your thoughts. Click to expand...

jscherb said: Since the beginning Gr8Tops attached the barn door differently than it is on my Safari Cab. Originally they used two z-shaped brackets (kind of like stake pockets) that attached to the tailgate with longer bolts throug the four bolt holes in the side of the spare carrier (all the way through the tailgate). The stakes for the upper door slid into the brackets and clamped in place. They may have changed that in later versions, since that version didn't use/need the nutserts you mentioned. My stakes have holes in them for bolts that go into threaded inserts in the tailgate. My threaded inserts are welded in place - I never intended this technique for production, only for mine. There were several options for production and Gr8Tops chose the z-brackets. But as I said, they may have changed those since the early tops, I don't know. I'm writing at a rest stop on the road, I'll answer the roll-up soft sides question in detail later when I'm not on the go, hopefully this evening. Click to expand...

skrelnik said: I am lost for words on how awesome your designs are. As you noted the gr8tops rear corners are connected to the side panels so you would need those brackets. I don't even know if those brackets would support the roof since we now have different designs, nor would I even know where to begin to have them properly fabricated. If you do run a group buy, or decide to mod any tops on the side please keep me in mind. I'd love to to be able to remove the sides while keeping the roof in place and utilize the soft sides or no sides....Im in the northeast if you ever make a run into New England. Click to expand...

skrelnik said: I ended up going with the GR8TOPS hardtop because as I previously mentioned I wanted OEM but couldn't find one that was in good shape, by my definition of good shape. There were a few out there in the $1k - $1.5k that require a bunch of work, touch up paint, new wiper, broken glass or it just looked "ratty" looking. Didn't want to end up paying $2.5k-$3k for a 12 year old hardtop. I explored CamperKing and was ready to pull the trigger but they have an awful shipping policy that would have required me to drive 2 hours (each way assuming no NYC traffic) to JFK airport in NYC. No thanks! Install took about 5 hours with two other guys helping out. The main panels were not difficult to install, but require patience to make sure all seems are in place. The rear door was the most difficult to install, mainly because it requires a special tool - nutsert tool. We opted to use bolts instead which were difficult to install because we didn't want to drill through the rear gate. So we had to balance a nut inside of a wrench and then stick inside the vent opening, while trying to get those bolts to thread. It took time but we did it. I'm happy with the results! Click to expand...

I have to ask. What do you think of the GR8TOP safari hard top, now that you have had it for three years. They no longer sell it with the brackets to remove the sides. Has it lived up to your expectations? I'm on the fence. Thanks for your response.

Alternative to the Gr8tops LJ Safari Top?

http://gr8tops.com/shop/wrangler-lj-2/lj-safari-cab-full-hardtop Here is the original. I think it is awesome, but $4100 for the top and another $600 for the install that is required? A little ridiculous. Anyone know of anything else that is maybe, I don't know, half that?

AngryRedBird

Yep.. Gr8tops is about the only Safari top supplier, I mean I kind of like the WildBoar system.. But as I said in one of my other post.. If one was to convert the Freedom hard top off a JK (for me at least) into a mini top.. But a thought came to mind.. You know those van conversion companies.. where they add on the taller more aerodynamic top.. I would if they would be willing to handle the challenge.. but then again.. there always room to flip a fiberglass boat upside down and retrofit something out of it..

Jeep or Tacoma

WHAT DOES IT ACCOMPLISH FOR THE jeep I really don't get what this accomplishes for the jeep> is there little more head room? better mileage an inside sleeping platform. I think a ursa minor has more benefits, true it cost more . But am I missing something?

I just like the look, and it seems to have a little more room.

Not so much a fan of the full safari type top.. but I have seen some with windows and ports to store things the about the design.. Some could use a bit better thought in the design.. I think the main reason I'm just needed the 2 panels.. is so we can actually remove that section if need be.. the Bestop bikini was a pain to put on and remove.. This is one Reason I like the Wildboar setup.. it has a "t" top option.

Is that the design Jsherb(sp?) made? also, what is the ursa minor?

Haf-E

Ursa Minor makes a poptop for sleeping in/on a JKU - I assume you have a LJ series Jeep? Nothing from them for an LJ...

Correct.. However you're miss a few key elements.. No rear seat and the wraparound Windjammer along with the Duster.. But again I'd prefer to have the mini hard top extend out past the speaker bar (small extended cab) then down into the cargo area.. thus getting rid of the duster cover. This would mean having to cut/splice a 2 or 4 door hard top to mesh together.
