Squeezed between mountain peaks amid the dramatic Andes, Quito’s setting is just as dramatic and inspiring as its character and identity, which can be discovered in everything from historic streets and bustling markets, to vibrant restaurants and awe-inspiring nature.

What started out as a small port town has impressively developed into a vibrant, bustling city; the largest in Ecuador in fact.

The heart of Ecuadorian craftsmanship and folk traditions, Otavalo is the place to experience authentic Ecuadorian culture. The handicraft market here is world renowned and a good place to pick up some excellent souvenirs, as well as learn more about the indigenous identity of Ecuador.

The central sierra of Ecuador is a beautifully scenic highland area and it’s here you’ll find the aptly named Avenue of the Volcanoes.

Encountered where the Andean highlands run down to the Pacific coastline, set amid tumbling hills blanketed in exuberant rainforest and home to diverse and abundant wildlife, hidden here are some of Ecuador’s most stunning and delicate cloud forests.

One of the world’s last great natural areas of wilderness, the Amazon is a truly awe-inspiring location that has to be experienced to be fully understood. Home to one fifth of the world’s fresh water, the sheer scale of the Amazon River is breathtaking, with new fish, bird and animal species constantly being discovered amid its wild landscapes.

A vibrant colonial city set in the south of Ecuador, Cuenca is the country’s third largest city and is packed with historic landmarks and rich heritage.

Midwest Lowlands

Heading east of Guayaquil, and just before you hit the mighty Andes mountains, you’ll find yourself in Ecuador’s midwest lowlands. Despite being just 74km from the country’s biggest city, it is a quiet and secluded region and perfect for exploring Ecuador’s natural beauty.

Set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Chimborazo volcano, Riobamba is primarily used as a base for excursions into the surrounding wilderness, although there are a handful of attractions within the city to keep you occupied, even if your stay is a brief one.

Shortened from Baños de Agua Santa, meaning Baths of Sacred Water, it will come as no surprise that the town’s greatest attraction is the hydrothermal springs of the Cascada de la Virgen (The Virgin’s Waterfall). Baños is also known by the moniker ‘The Gateway to the Amazon’, for it is the only city located in the mountain region found just before the start of the Amazon jungle.

When to go to Ecuador

June to September are the busiest times of year to visit Ecuador, especially the Galapagos Islands, due to school breaks. This is also the driest time of year, but that doesn't necessarily mean the best time to travel to Ecuador as it's chillier, often choppier out at sea, and visibility is poor for diving. December to May offer calmer seas making for excellent sailing conditions and often sunny mornings ideal for trips to the best Ecuador beaches. But bear in mind this warmer time of year is also the rainy season, so you can expect afternoon showers. The rainforests are wet year-round, but they can be particularly soggy this time of year, too, with some areas inaccessible, so you'll likely be travelling by boat.

Cloud forest

The varying altitudes of the cloud forest create cooler temperatures than the Amazon and numerous microclimates, resulting in an incredible assortment of flora and fauna. So while it is less well known than some of Ecuador’s other highlights, the beautiful cloud forest is a perfect addition to a tour of Ecuador. Perched on a plateau at 3,117 feet, the five-star Mashpi Lodge is both a private, luxurious hideaway in the clouds, as well as an active nature reserve. The Galapagos Islands were formed out of the Earth’s crust, which means they are constantly moving from west to east. Around 5 million years ago, when the Earth’s crust passed over hotspots with higher temperatures, the pressure and temperature caused the formation of holes. These holes gave rise to a series of volcanoes, from which molten lava stones flowed. As they reached the surface and emerged from the sea, they formed the islands we see today. Hence, the Galapagos Islands emerged from the sea and have a volcanic origin.

Delta takes fast, free Wi-Fi international

Delta has started rolling out fast, free Wi-Fi presented by T-Mobile on select long-haul international routes – a major milestone in the airline’s journey to bring reliable, streaming quality connectivity to its entire global fleet for free. Most transatlantic flights are expected to be in service with free Wi-Fi by the end of the summer. 

Delta’s industry-leading Wi-Fi rollout is taking off internationally. Starting this summer, customers on select Viasat-equipped long-haul international flights can enjoy fast, free Wi-Fi presented by T-Mobile – bringing the airline one step closer to recognizing its goal of offering free Wi-Fi on its entire global fleet.  

Today, free, streaming-quality connectivity is available on nearly 700 aircraft – more than 90% of Delta’s domestic mainline fleet – and the airline expects the vast majority of customers will have access to the product by the end of the year.   

“As we continue to roll out fast, free Wi-Fi and the in-flight experiences it powers, we’re able to serve customers traveling both domestically and internationally in new, in-the-moment ways,” says Ranjan Goswami, S.V.P. – Customer Experience Design. “The scale at which we’re bringing free Wi-Fi to customers is unmatched in the airline industry, and it’s a testament to the incredible efforts of Delta teams across the business that have expertly navigated an extremely complex rollout.” 

What’s Next   

To ensure Delta is delivering the premium service customers expect, the airline is rolling out fast, free Wi-Fi on Viasat-equipped widebody aircraft on a route-by-route basis. Additional routes will be phased in as high-quality, reliable service becomes available. This strategy mirrors the approach taken with domestic installations in 2022.  

As free Wi-Fi rolls out internationally, the international Wi-Fi portal will not require a SkyMiles log-in initially. Later this year, all Viasat Wi-Fi-equipped aircraft will officially convert to the personalized Delta Sync Wi-Fi experience unlocked by customers’ SkyMiles memberships for exclusive onboard experiences and offers.  

Timeline  

Last month, fast, free Wi-Fi rolled out on most flights to/from France (CDG and NCE) out of/into all U.S. stations. Looking ahead, the airline anticipates the following timeline 1 : 

1 This is an expected timeline and is subject to change based on testing and satellite availability.   

2 Expected timeline based on aircraft installation schedule.   

Delta’s regional routes are expected to follow a similar process and come online into 2025, including those serviced by Boeing 717 aircraft.  

Knowing what Wi-Fi service to expect on your next flight   

During the airline’s Wi-Fi transition period, there are unfortunately some coverage gaps where Wi-Fi is not available until additional satellites are positioned to provide full coverage. Some aircraft will have a paid Intelsat Wi-Fi experience until these additional satellites are in service and these aircraft are outfitted with upgraded satellite Wi-Fi. To know if free Wi-Fi is available on their flight, customers can:
