Meet Chinchilla, the pop artist who wants to celebrate empowerment at every turn

Through her defiant music and mantra, chinchilla is already proving to be a champion for the oppressed..

By Nick Reilly

chinchilla music tour

“You’re so f***ing bad for me, still I censor every feeling and profanity,” comes Chinchilla ‘s defiant cry on ‘Cut You Off’, which has become a breakout hit for the rising London artist.

The track, she tells Rolling Stone UK, has attracted a legion of fans who have identified their own struggles – from abuse to toxic relationships – with the song’s central theme of taking a stand against people who need to be cut out of our lives.

“It’s a fuck you song and a liberation scream,” she says. I think that’s what it’s about and the feeling of biting your tongue for so long and then screaming, which is something I feel like I do quite often in my life.”

Another theme central to the pop artist’s music is empowerment, she explains. Both in the slew of defiant pop songs she’s carved, but also in her own trajectory as an independent artist who has shaken off the shackles of a major label deal. “It’s been the best fucking thing ever,” she proudly attests.

Now, firmly on her own path and fresh from releasing her latest single MF Diamond (view that below), Chinchilla is determined to become of pop’s most exciting new voices.

Hello, Chinchilla! How’s your 2024 been so far?

Brutal, but good! I’ve got a meeting with my managers on Friday and we’ve just been like OK, let’s do it in a spa. Things have been really busy so we’ve just said let’s have a meeting in a hot tub. I feel like that’s very necessary.

It’s no surprise, really. ‘Cut You Off’ has been a massive TikTok moment.

It has, but ‘Little Girl Gone’ was the song I released before it and the one that changed my life. So I feel like the follow-up was always going to be a weird thing that I was slightly nervous about.

But it has felt like a great one to follow-up with, I really loved it because there’s a good mix of big belting choruses and a slight nonchalant cool vibe too, I think I nailed it with that song.

I think the way it’s connected with people is amazing too. A lot of people reached out and told me about the people they’ve cut out of their lives and this song is really getting through to a lot of single mums who had to cut out their partners. I have a lot of messages from women who have been through a lot of abuse. It’s really dark, but also an amazing thing that they have reached out to me. I really don’t take that for granted.

What was the story behind that song for you specifically?

I have a bit of a thing with this song where I don’t like to say exactly what it was about because I feel like when I released it, it became meaningful for so many women and it was really special they had found something that liberates them in it. It’s a fuck you song and a liberation scream. I think that’s what it’s about and the feeling of biting your tongue for so long and then screaming, which is something I feel like I do quite often in my life.

That’s where all my best music comes from, when I’m not biting my tongue anymore. I love that sense of putting it all out there and being unapologetic.

This is our PlayNext series, where artists are given the chance to be introduced to our readers. How would you describe yourself and your music, Chinchilla?

Well, it’s sometimes hard to put yourself in a box but I think the biggest word that ties together my whole sound and project is empowerment. That’s the word I always like and the one that means the most to me and what I want to do with my music. The artists I love, that’s what I feel with them. Beyonce is my everything and she’s like that. Empowerment is always my main holy grail. In terms of my music, I’d say it’s like feisty pop. Someone once described it as ‘Tarantino Pop’ and I laughed at that.

You were signed to a major label, but you’re now finding success on your own imprint. Does that fit into the empowerment theme?

It’s been the best fucking thing ever. I just had a really awful year in 2022. I split with my management and had a really tough situation there and then I split with my label. It was a year of just not good things. I found myself approaching managers and sending demos and they’d just send feedback saying ‘this is what you need to do’, or ‘this one is cheesy’. I got to a point where I’d had too many meetings of being spoken at and I just wanted to get a placard made that said ‘I’M NOT FINISHED’ because people interrupted me so much and drove me crazy.

But eventually I just became fed up and turned into this sort of Albert Einstein in my bedroom, with flip charts and calendars everywhere, just working away and planning my whole career.

It was hard work, but the best thing for me. I burnt any yearning for the industry’s approval to the ground and that’s when it all started working, I was totally in charge and in control and then people started to resonate with what I was doing and it massively blew up. Then I was suddenly running a global campaign single handedly- I needed to recruit more people to help me, but I was in a different headspace where I knew what I valued in people and I think that helped me maintain control. I’m signed with Universal now – releasing my songs under my imprint, Chinchilla Music Ltd. I’m driving my project – and the right people around me only empower me to do that more. I love that. It’s a completely different ball game.

I wanted to ask about your close friendship with Ren, who we’ve featured on Rolling Stone UK. His independent artistry is quite something – a Number One album under his belt and quite the ardent fanbase.

We’ve known each other for years and we’re very close. We were on the same management for a while and and we’ve done like a few songs together, so I feel like we’re musical siblings.

We’re very tight and musically quite similar too. We come up with a lot of the same ideas and things like, quite literally the other day, I met him and it turned out we’d designed the same merch!

But our relationship is good and his fans are amazing, they will just do whatever for him, in a great way, they really have his back. And I think I feel that with my fan base as well. A lot of our fans are very die hard and there’s something special about going through this journey with them.

You can’t buy that loyalty. Thanks for your time, Chinchilla!

Mr. Coward, you wrote the song title incorrectly 5 times, along with many grammar mistakes. How embarrassing. You didn’t even listen, did you? You don’t even know the answer, do you? In the doghouse and you’re lyin’ through your dog chew.

CHINCHILLA is a trailblazer artist who takes pride in being DIY and disruptive. “I have to be in control of everything I put out – from music to visuals,” says this fiercely unique rising star. CHINCHILLA self-released her breakthrough single Little Girl Gone in April 2023, it has racked up more than 200 million combined streams and nearly 14 million combined views. She also became the first UK female soloist ever to top Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart.

On the Rise CHINCHILLA

London-born singer/songwriter and pop polymath CHINCHILLA found her creative freedom after taking a fiercely independent approach to music.

With her recent single, the female empowerment anthem “Little Girl Gone,” artist, writer, designer and producer Chinchilla landed millions of streams, attention from every corner of the music industry and an ever-growing fanbase. It might seem like her success happened overnight, but the roots of her artistry and ambition have been nursed over many years, highs and tribulations.

Sharing new single, the ferocious and unforgiving “Cut You Off”, Chinchilla – the pop alias of Daisy Bertenshaw – finally finds herself in a position where she’s free to capitalise on her newfound momentum, even if it means she has to make some quick u-turns along the way. Calling in from her bedroom, surrounded by flip-charts and wall planners, she speaks with confidence, assertion, and just the right amount of self-deprecation.

Born and raised in London, both her parents worked as actors, although in recent years her mum pivoted to start her own business. “I feel like both are quite inspirational to me because it’s like, my mum’s a real boss. I don’t know how else to put it better than that,” she smiles. “They’re both really creative and I’ve been really lucky to have a creative job in the realms of possibility.”

Alongside their supportive position and embracement of the arts, those formative years backstage at theatres also gave Chinchilla a window into the rapture of imagination. Through her explosive songs, pioneering style and striking visuals, she now pulls on that early inspiration. “Something I’m quite often drawn to is almost no one has an identity, they’re more characters. I think that’s often what I go to. I just like this idea of it being a whole world,” she says. “My dad was in pantomimes every year and it’s just one of my favourite memories, going backstage afterwards and being so amazed with the set and props. I used to love it.”

While she was at school, she played in a band with six of her friends, gigging all around London. “I’ve always loved a scrappy attitude,” she laughs. Despite achieving a respectable level of success, Chinchilla knew in her heart that it was a solo career she craved, and as school came to an end, so did the band.

2023 09 13 CHINCHILLA SHOT 01 138

Trying to balance her desire for the traditional uni experience with her passion for music, she enrolled in a creative artistry course at Metropolis Studios, run by the music college ACM. “Music is the best because there’s so much to do. You have like, fifty different jobs,” she laughs. “You’re doing fashion, graphic design, film and you’re doing accounting. At one point I was like, maybe I should just do a law degree so that I’ll have that.”

While nearing the end of her two year course she was discovered by a management team and released her debut single “Elements” off the back of graduating in 2019. “A seamless transition,” she shrugs.

A formidable cut of RnB-spiked pop, it marked the start of a run of independent releases, culminating in her 2020 EP Awakening . Early that year, she hit the road in support of the release, opening shows around Europe for Texan electronic duo MISSIO. “We were driving through cities as they were being locked down and the last city that we managed to get a show in was Berlin,” she says. “There was an A&R person there from Sony Germany. It was literally the last live show I was able to do before lockdown and I ended up signing a record deal off the back of that.”

As with most things in 2020, their new relationship didn’t go to plan. The distance, uncertainty, and lack of normal practice left her unable to get things off the ground. “I couldn’t even get there,” she says. “It felt quite like a disconnect and that’s eventually what it came down to and we agreed to part ways.”

Last year, Chinchilla split with both her label and management and set about planning her own path. With the help of her beloved flip-chart, she plotted out a blueprint for the next twelve months. “I planned everything. I went turbo crazy scientist on it,” she laughs.

Instead of bringing on new management, she worked with fellow artist Dwara to bounce ideas around, mapping everything out in ink. “That was really valuable. Just talking it out makes you realise what you want to do,” she explains. “I didn’t even think about what would happen if it worked, and it worked, instantly. I was like, oh fuck. So then I had to rethink it.”

Her first single without a team, “Little Girl Gone” went viral on TikTok, its success spilling over into streaming. To date, the track is nearing a million videos on the platform and well over 200 million streams. “When the song blew up, all the labels came out of the woodwork,” she says. “I was running a global project by myself and it was completely insane. I started off being like, I’m passionately independent. Eventually I was like, I’ll have the conversation.”

After a lot of soul-searching, Chinchilla finally admitted that she needed help. “I was really burning out. I was looking at what my goals and ambitions are for my project and I was thinking, are you being too proud? Are you actually shooting yourself in the foot because you’re being too proud to work with a team of people?” she says. “I wanted to be able to have more freedom and be creative, rather than being on my emails all the time.”

2023 09 13 CHINCHILLA SHOT 04 005

She signed a deal with Universal, using all her leverage and experience to ensure the details fell in her favour. Despite the u-turn, she’s adamant that the experience she gained from being independent means she’s fully in control moving forward. “I think it’s definitely shaped and moulded me into someone who’s very well prepared for where I’ve landed and for what’s ahead,” she says. “I had a rough time, last year was terrible, but I think it’s put me in a position where I know what I want and I’m a lot more headstrong with it all. It’s all fallen into place quite perfectly, in a very horrible way.”

“Cut You Off” is her first single with the label, but it’s still Chinchilla through and through. Developing the melody while working on the live arrangement for her previous track “Fingers,” she went into the studio with co-producer mintsauce, the idea locked in her voice notes.

A defiant, sharp, witty and instant rip of rap-hooked alternative pop, it’s as vitriolic as it is addictive. Just as Chinchilla was involved in co-producing, something that’s strongly important to her, she also co-directed the video. “I don’t think I’m a control freak, I just have a very strong vision of exactly how I see something,” she explains. “With my favourite songs I’ve written, I’ll usually have an idea for a video that I’m writing as I’m writing the song.”

Despite her headstrong approach and determined work ethic, collaboration is something that Chinchilla is ready to embrace, be it creative or administrative. “It’s more fun if you’re working with creative people who bring more ideas to the table,” she smiles. “It’s this fiery, creative explosion.”

EXCLUSIVE: Interview with CHINCHILLA

Written by live nation asia / april 29, 2020.

British newcomer CHINCHILLA is set to embark on a global tour from the comfort of her own home, with the self-produced pop powerhouse confirmed to be going live across Live Nation channels in what will be her first Asian dates.

Having already spread her wings across Europe supporting Sting on his 2019 arena tour and performing at the last two annual Estonian Music Awards, CHINCHILLA has recently released her debut EP ‘Awakening’ to tremendous critical acclaim, with her song ‘One Time’ being featured as ‘Record of the Day’ earlier this month.

We caught up with her to chat about her debut EP ‘Awakening’ and musical background before she ‘performs’ in Asia.

Hi, CHINCHILLA! Why don’t we start the interview with a short introduction of yourself? Let’s talk about your background and music.

I’m CHINCHILLA, I’m from London and I’d describe my music as kind of fiery soulful empowering pop... I grew up in London in a creative family, and was always singing! Then in secondary school I started singing in a big brassy band with 6 of my best friends, which was a lot of fun and a massive part of my growing up. My favourite artists have always been strong solo female singers like Beyoncé, Janis Joplin, Etta James, Christina Aguilera, and I’d always had in the back of my mind that that is the kind of music I wanted to make - so when my old band naturally went our separate ways, I had a gap year before going to uni where I started doing that! I taught myself how to produce properly and began the CHINCHILLA journey...

Congrats on releasing your debut EP ‘Awakening’! Can you describe the album in three words?

Audacious, flirtatious, and vivacious!

Now tell us more about the concept behind it.

‘Awakening’ is all about a time of intense personal growth in our life. I think we all go through it at some point, a time when we really find ourselves independently, sexually, morally. As females we tackle our femininity and societal pressures and expectations. The EP looks at unorthodox subjects like body positivity, infidelity, sexual desire, feminism, wrong and right, and does it in a really honest and Frank way! It is my proudest work to date.

What’s your favourite track from the album and why?

Difficult question... my favourite changes every day! ‘One Time’ is definitely up there because it’s just fun, and I think those people who really get it LOVE IT, and the reaction is absolutely priceless - that song brings joy to my life in a different level! But ‘Shadows’ is the most personal to me, one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written actually, so that is a special one to me.

You collaborated with other artists in this album. ‘Shadows’ was written with Jordan Lees and ‘Know No’ was co-written and produced by Mort. What was it like working with other artists?

It’s great if you find the right people! I like working by myself and with others. Both methods have pros and cons, but either way it’s great when there’s a special vibe in the room when you both know you’re writing a banger!

What would be one guiding principle in finding collaborators?

I think it’s good to try doing some different sessions with new people and see what works for you. Artists really work in different ways and like to write with different numbers of people etc. Me personally, I like to find someone I feel really comfortable with in the room, who leaves their ego at the door. If I feel judged or like someone is trying to be ‘cool’, it stunts my creativity, and everyone else’s in the room for that matter. And I don’t love to write in massive groups of people if it’s a song for me. One to two other people in the room is ideal.

Who would you like to collaborate with next and why?

SO MANY PEOPLE!! Someone it’s always been a dream to collaborate with is Mark Ronson. I think he’s incredible.

We know you supported Sting on his European Arena tour. Did he invite you? Tell us the experience working with such a legendary musician.

It was epic! It really threw me in at the deep end because I had only just released my first single and was suddenly performing to arenas! But honestly it was an incredible experience, a dream! Sting is lovely and his whole team were amazing, really generous and made me feel right at home!

Which musician influences you the most?

B.E.Y.O.N.C.É.

We know you are bringing your ‘Awakening’ Virtual Tour to us soon. That’s amazing! What should people expect? Any special message to people who will be watching the performance?

Yeeaaa baby! Expect energy and SASS LEVELS. Dancing, singing, and OUTFITS - as always! I can’t wait for it! A special message to viewers would be: THANKS for partying with me, now go and stream my EP!!! Xxx
