It used to be that posting cool travel pictures on Instagram was enough. People would enjoy the content, like and comment, and sometimes… even share.

That is (usually) no longer the case.

Great travel Instagram captions alongside great photos and videos are now a must-have.

However, not just any Instagram caption will cut it. You need the right “Nomadic Narratives” to take your content to the next level.

Here are the best tips and tricks for creating these types of narratives.

Using Emojis Effectively

Nomadic Narratives rely on emojis to bring out the emotions.

Emojis can transform multiple words and phrases and boil them down to a single symbol. This symbol represents your best feelings as you explore new countries and touch down in different destinations.

However, a word of warning.

Do not go overboard with emojis. Too many and you’ll lose people. If your viewers need to take time to figure out what you’re saying, chances are you’ve gone overboard.

The right dosage of emojis is the first key to building Nomadic Narratives.

Leveraging Trending Topics

Nomadic Narratives are all about trending topics. These topics grab people’s interest and, most importantly, cause them to stop scrolling their Instagram feeds.

The question then becomes, “what does a trending topic look like?”

The short answer is that it’s a popular topic that’s talked about by a large group of people.

This could be a new destination opening up, the start of the summer travel season, or even a specific food that locals have just discovered.

What’s important is that you find a way to combine your images and videos with the trending topic in your caption.

After all, you want your Nomadic Narratives to be relevant to your content.

Here’s a quick example.

Let’s take the “start of summer” as a trending topic. If you’re posting a picture of yourself at the beach, you could have a caption that says:

You can also consider the 5W’s and 1H or narrative. The 5Ws are Who, What, Where, When, and Why. The 1H is How.

Tailoring Your Nomadic Narratives To Fit Your Audience

Finally, consider that your Nomadic Narratives are specific to your audience. There’s no point in having specialized captions that your audience can’t relate to.

Here’s an example scenario:

• you’re a travel agent
• catering to middle-aged people
• your audience wants to book a once-in-a-lifetime cruise around the Mediterranean.

Quite a specific target audience.

In this case, you can’t have Nomadic Narratives that say: “Hey, budget travelers, get ready for your backpacking adventure!”

This would not resonate with your audience (at all).

Instead, you want to have narratives like:

This concept also applies to personal Instagram accounts. If you’re a 20-year-old traveling solo for the first time (and your audience resonates with this), don’t use captions that don’t align with your target audience.

A great caption might be:

On the other hand, a bad one might be:

Jet-setting around the world in first class, living my best life. #blessed

There’s an obvious disconnect in the second example.

What we know about CrowdStrike’s update fail that’s causing global outages and travel chaos

A faulty software update issued by security giant CrowdStrike has resulted in a massive overnight outage that’s affected Windows computers around the world , disrupting businesses, airports, train stations, banks, broadcasters and the healthcare sector.

CrowdStrike said the outage was not caused by a cyberattack, but was the result of a “defect” in a software update for its flagship security product, Falcon Sensor. The defect caused any Windows computers that Falcon is installed on to crash without fully loading.

“The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed,” said CrowdStrike in a statement on Friday . Some businesses and organizations are beginning to recover, but many expect the outages to drag on into the weekend or next week given the complexity of the fix. CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz told NBC News that it may take “some time for some systems that just automatically won’t recover.” In a later tweet , Kurtz apologized for the disruption.

Here’s everything you need to know about the outages.

What happened?

Late Thursday into Friday, reports began to emerge of IT problems wherein Windows computers were getting stuck with the infamous “blue screen of death” — a bright blue error screen with a message that displays when Windows encounters a critical failure, crashes or cannot load.

The outages were first noticed in Australia early on Friday, and reports quickly came in from the rest of Asia and Europe as the regions began their day, as well as the United States.

Within a short time, CrowdStrike confirmed that a software update for Falcon had malfunctioned and was causing Windows computers that had the software installed to crash. Falcon lets CrowdStrike remotely analyze and check for malicious threats and malware on installed computers.

At around the same time, Microsoft reported a significant outage at one of its most used Azure cloud regions covering much of the central United States. A spokesperson for Microsoft told TechCrunch that its outage was unrelated to CrowdStrike’s incident .

Around Friday noon (Eastern time), Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella posted on X saying the company is aware of the CrowdStrike botched update and is “working closely with CrowdStrike and across the industry to provide customers technical guidance and support to safely bring their systems back online.”

What is CrowdStrike and what does Falcon Sensor do?

CrowdStrike, founded in 2011, has quickly grown into a cybersecurity giant. Today the company provides software and services to 29,000 corporate customers, including around half of Fortune 500 companies, 43 out of 50 U.S. states and eight out of the top 10 tech firms, according to its website .

The company’s cybersecurity software, Falcon, is used by enterprises to manage security on millions of computers around the world. These businesses include large corporations, hospitals, transportation hubs and government departments. Most consumer devices do not run Falcon and are unaffected by this outage.

One of the company’s biggest recent claims to fame was when it caught a group of Russian government hackers breaking into the Democratic National Committee ahead of the 2016 U.S. presidential election. CrowdStrike is also known for using memorable animal-themed names for the hacking groups it tracks based on their nationality, such as: Fancy Bear , believed to be part of Russia’s General Staff Main Intelligence Directorate, or GRU; Cozy Bear , believed to be part of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, or SVR; Gothic Panda , believed to be a Chinese government group; and Charming Kitten , believed to be an Iranian state-backed group. The company even makes action figures to represent these groups, which it sells as swag .

CrowdStrike is so big it’s one of the sponsors of the Mercedes F1 team , and this year even aired a Super Bowl ad — a first for a cybersecurity company. 

Who are the outages affecting?

Practically anyone who during their everyday life interacts with a computer system running software from CrowdStrike is affected, even if the computer isn’t theirs. 

These devices include the cash registers at grocery stores, departure boards at airports and train stations, school computers, your work-issued laptops and desktops, airport check-in systems, airlines’ own ticketing and scheduling platforms, healthcare networks and many more. Because CrowdStrike’s software is so ubiquitous, the outages are causing chaos around the world in a variety of ways. A single affected Windows computer in a fleet of systems could be enough to disrupt the network. 

TechCrunch reporters around the world are seeing and experiencing outages, including at points of travel, doctors’ offices and online. Early on Friday, the Federal Aviation Administration put in effect a ground stop, effectively grounding flights across the United States, citing the disruption. It looks like so far the national Amtrak rail network is functioning as normal. 

What is the U.S. government doing so far?

Given that the problem stems from a company, there isn’t much that the U.S. federal government can do. According to a pool report, President Biden was briefed on the CrowdStrike outage, and “his team is in touch with CrowdStrike and impacted entities.” That’s in large part because the federal government is a customer of CrowdStrike and also affected.

Several federal agencies are affected by the incident, including the Department of Education , and Social Security Administration, which said Friday that it closed its offices as a result of the outage.

The pool report said Biden’s team is “engaged across the interagency to get sector by sector updates throughout the day and is standing by to provide assistance as needed.” 

In a separate tweet, Homeland Security said it was working with its U.S. cybersecurity agency CISA, CrowdStrike and Microsoft — as well as its federal, state, local and critical infrastructure partners — to “fully assess and address system outages.”

There will no doubt be questions for CrowdStrike (and to some extent Microsoft, whose unrelated outage also caused disruption overnight for its customers) from government and congressional investigators. 

For now, the immediate focus will be on the recovery of affected systems.

How do affected customers fix their Windows computers?

The major problem here is that CrowdStrike’s Falcon Sensor software malfunctioned, causing Windows machines to crash, and there’s no easy way to fix that. 

So far, CrowdStrike has issued a patch, and it has also detailed a workaround that could help affected systems function normally until it has a permanent solution. One option is for users to “reboot the [affected computer] to give it an opportunity to download the reverted channel file,” referring to the fixed file.

In a message to users , CrowdStrike detailed a few steps customers can take, one of which requires physical access to an affected system to remove the defective file. CrowdStrike says users should boot the computer into Safe Mode or Windows Recovery Environment, navigate to the CrowdStrike directory, and delete the faulty file “C-00000291*.sys.”

The wider problem with having to fix the file manually could be a major headache for companies and organizations with large numbers of computers, or Windows-powered servers in datacenters or locations that might be in another region, or an entirely different country.

CISA warns that malicious actors are ‘taking advantage’ of the outage

In a statement on Friday, CISA attributed the outages to the faulty CrowdStrike update and that the issue was not due to a cyberattack. CISA said that it was “working closely with CrowdStrike and federal, state, local, tribal and territorial partners, as well as critical infrastructure and international partners to assess impacts and support remediation efforts.”

CISA did note, however, that it has “observed threat actors taking advantage of this incident for phishing and other malicious activity.” The cybersecurity agency did not provide more specifics, but warned organizations to stay vigilant.

Malicious actors can and will exploit confusion and chaos to carry out cyberattacks on their own. Rachel Tobac, a social engineering expert and founder of cybersecurity firm SocialProof Security, said in a series of posts on X to “verify people are who they say they are before taking sensitive actions.”

“Criminals will attempt to use this IT outage to pretend to be IT to you or you to IT to steal access, passwords, codes, etc.,” Tobac said.

What do we know about misinformation so far?

It’s easy to understand why some might have thought that this outage was a cyberattack. Sudden outages, blue screens at airports, office computers filled with error messages, and chaos and confusion. As you might expect, a fair amount of misinformation is already flying around , even as social media sites incorrectly flag trending topics like “cyberattack.”

Remember to check official sources of news and information, and if something seems too good to be true, it might just well be.

The Palm Beach Daily News reported scores of people lined the Southern Boulevard causeway between West Palm Beach and Palm Beach. Some carried U.S. flags and large flags bearing slogans of Trump's 2024 campaign. Others carried signs showing their support for Trump.

The district attorney for Butler County, Penn., where the rally was held, confirmed to the press later that a member of the audience and the shooter were dead. Another person was seriously injured.

Though Mar-a-Lago is the posh resort he's owned for decades, it's Trump's private club and Florida home. It was dubbed during his presidency the Southern White House.

Hutton when she commissioned Marion Sims Wyeth to build her a 58-bedroom Spanish-Moorish-Portuguese-Venetian palace on 17 acres of jungle between the ocean and the Intracoastal. By the time it was finished in 1927, Joseph Urban, a Viennese architect and theater designer, had provided much of the ornamentation.

Security at Mar-a-Lago

There were a number of security breaches during Trump's presidency, with some occurring when he was not in town.

Her car was shot at multiple times. She survived, but her car was destroyed. The woman, who has a history of mental illness, entered an insanity defense.

• Two Chinese women tried to enter Mar-a-Lago. One woman was carrying four cellphones and a USB infected with malware.

• A University of Wisconsin student was intercepted when he was in the tunnel, whichconnects the club to the beach.

• Other people have hidden in the bushes — and been caught.

Video shows passengers sheltering in place at Chicago airports due to possible tornadoes

Hundreds of passengers at the two major Chicago airports were stranded and ordered to shelter in place due to possible tornados hitting the region on Monday night.

Video shows an enormous crowd of people inside the Chicago O'Hare International Airport sheltering in place from possible tornadoes passing through Monday.

The same day, video from Chicago Midway International Airport shows an unmoving plane sitting at the gate as storms gusted around the aircraft.

Multiple flights arriving and departing from both O'Hare and Midway Monday night during the severe storm warnings were delayed or canceled , according to the airports' records.

The National Weather Service in Chicago issued 16 tornado warnings on Monday around the region, the most in a single day in 20 years. This included Cook and DuPage counties, where O'Hare and Midway are located.

The weather service also reported power flashes from both airports' webcams due to tornadoes or destructive wind gusts near those areas.

As completion of the barrier neared in 2023, there were 14 recorded suicides. Since Jan. 1, when the barrier was finished, there have been three confirmed suicides, said Paolo Cosulich-Schwartz, spokesperson for the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District.

In a typical year before the net, there would have been 15 to 20 suicides at this point in the year, he said.

Attempts have also declined since it was completed. There have been 56 successful interventions this year where first responders or bridge workers dissuaded people from jumping. That’s compared to the average of at least 150 interventions for this time in the pre-net era.

“The net is working as intended to save lives and deter people from coming to the bridge to harm themselves,” Cosulich-Schwartz said.

This week, after years of work to complete the barrier, dignitaries joined families who lost loved ones to the bridge to commemorate the completion of the $224 million project.

Although a barrier has been in place since New Year’s Day, the commemoration was delayed until the contractor could remove most of the scaffolding used to do the work, Cosulich-Schwartz said.

Kymberlyrenee Gamboa, whose 18-year-old son Kyle Gamboa died after jumping off the bridge in 2013, was among those who celebrated the barrier at the ceremony at Vista Point in Sausalito on Monday.

Gamboa said the completion “signifies hope, compassion and a commitment to saving lives.”

“This deterrent is not just a physical barrier, it is a symbol of our collective effort to prevent the loss of life and the lifelong heartache that follows,” she said. “This deterrent shows we care, that we all care about human beings, that we all care about life.”

“Nothing will ever bring my son back, and I miss him every single day, as I know so many feel the same who have lost a loved one to this bridge,” Gamboa said. “But this deterrent shows that we care deeply about those we have lost and those who may be at risk in the future.”

Officials approved the barrier project more than a decade ago. Though work began in 2018, the installation of the 20-foot-wide stainless steel mesh nets didn’t start until 2022, due to repeated delays.

The net sits 20 feet below the deck and extends 20 feet out, running the length of the 1.7-mile bridge. It’s not visible from cars crossing the bridge, but pedestrians standing by the rails can see them.

The net is meant to both deter people from jumping and to catch anyone who does, though they will likely be badly injured if they do, officials said.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who helped the Golden Gate Bridge district secure federal funding for the project, attended the ceremony to show her gratitude for the families who pushed to get the barrier built.

“You turned your pain, and your anger in many cases, into action, so that we can save other lives,” said Pelosi, a former House speaker. “We are grateful to you for that. Thank you for your advocacy, your generosity of spirit.”

Pelosi said when the project was proposed, “people would say, ‘It’s too much money, it costs too much money to do that.’”

“Well, how much money is too much money to save lives?” she said. “We just had to reject that attitude.”

“This is an iconic bridge and a source of pride to us,” Pelosi said. “But it has been a source of pain to families and we want that to stop. It must stop, and it will stop because of the families activism and mobilization.”

Sonoma County Supervisor David Rabbitt serves on the boards of the Golden Gate Bridge district and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

“The suicide deterrent net will give people another chance and shed the dark cloud that has loomed large over the bridge’s legacy as an engineering marvel,” Rabbitt said. “The net will not bring back the loved ones lost, but it will spare countless other families from similar heartbreak in the future, and for this we can be thankful, thoughtful and, above all, hopeful.”

More work remains. The physical barrier refers to net and fencing, but there is still a section where there is fencing instead of a net due to ongoing construction of the bridge’s maintenance traveler system.

The traveler system is expected to be completed in 2027. The remaining section of netting is expected to be completed by the end of the year, Cosulich-Schwartz said.
