Travel CPAP Power Supplies

With the exception of the AirMini, each of the most popular travel models has the option of running off a battery. The battery life will vary based on how much pressure is being delivered and whether accessories like a heated humidifier are being used.

As an example, the DreamStation Go has a battery that will reportedly last two nights when the CPAP pressure is set to 10 centimeters of water pressure (cm H2O). The battery will presumably last longer at lower settings.

In practical use, the battery life for most travel CPAP machines is one to two nights with standard use.

The lithium-ion battery used in travel CPAP machines is rechargeable. With that said, the battery cannot be recharged unless you have a power source. This is a consideration if you decide to take the unit out with you while camping.

Of the four recommended models, the Transcend has a solar charger that can make it useful for wilderness outings (unless, of course, it rains).

Pros of Using Travel CPAP

Travel CPAP machines have several features that may make them attractive for people who are on the road or away from home:

• The units are quiet . Newer technology has led to devices that create virtually no noise. This is a big step forward from older models which often had a disruptive whirring sound.
• The slimline tubing is sleek. Some devices feature smaller slimline tubing, reducing the size of the standard CPAP tubing. This makes the unit easier to pack and allows for greater movement during sleep without altering the airflow dynamics.
• There are various mask options . With standard tubing connectors, it is possible to use any type of mask with most newer travel CPAP machines. The only exception is AirMini which requires one of several proprietary masks to accommodate the humidifier design.
• Integrated displays are standard . Rather than using a smartphone app to control and view the machine's settings, each of the four models has touch-responsive integrated displays that are far easier to use and monitor.
• Auto-CPAP function is standard . Each of these models has an auto-CPAP option with default settings ranging from 4 to 20 cm H20. This automatically adjusts the airflow pressure based on the amount of resistance it encounters from your breathing.
• Battery power allows for remote use . Most travel CPAP models (with the exception of the AirMini) have an integrated battery. The battery is safe to take on an airplane without restriction.

Cons of Using Travel CPAP

There are several reasons that you might not want to buy a travel CPAP. These may range from relatively minor nuisances to significant drawbacks, such as:

• Higher pressure settings may be needed . Travel CPAP machines may not work as well at lower settings and be less responsive to subtle changes in airflow resistance. This can be a problem since higher pressure settings may not be appropriate for you.
• There may be no humidifier . While many travel CPAP machines have a built-in humidifier, others don't. This could be a deal-breaker if you are prone to nosebleeds or persistent dry mouth from standard CPAP machines.
• Button responsiveness varies . The navigation buttons on some travel CPAP models are hard to push and vary in their responsiveness. Newer streamlined models generally overcome these concerns.
• Some models are cumbersome . While the DreamStation Go arguably offers more consistent pressure at high and low settings, it does so because it is larger. At 3.4 pounds, it is five times heavier than the AirMini and Z1, making it harder to transport in carry-on luggage.
• They are generally costly . Expect to pay $500 to $900 for the four recommended brands. You can opt for inexpensive models you find online, but their performance tends to be lackluster.
• Insurance may not cover the cost . Insurance will typically only cover a new CPAP device every five years, so you may need to pay for a travel unit out of your own pocket.

The AirSense 10 has an ambient light sensor that adjusts your screen’s brightness to the lighting of your room. This makes it easier to read in low light and the LCD screen will turn off after a period of inactivity so the light from the screen won’t disturb you while you sleep.

The AirSense 10 also has a taller and slightly wider humidification water chamber that can make it easier to grip and remove than the slimmer chamber in the AirSense 11.

It’s a portable CPAP machine that weighs 0.48 pounds (a paperback book weighs about 1 pound). At four inches in diameter, it’s roughly the size of a baseball.

At 27 dBA, the Transcend Micro is supposed to be as quiet as a whisper, plus the included  WhisperSoft muffler  helps to further dampen tubing and mask sounds.

The EZEX Pressure Relief feature can help you breathe more comfortably while you sleep by reducing added pressure from the machine when you exhale. The feature, which can be turned off, has three settings that allow you to customize your desired pressure relief.

This affordable CPAP machine delivers all the necessary functions, including CPAP and APAP modes, though it’s slightly heavier and louder than other devices reviewed here. On the plus side, it’s universally compatible with any CPAP mask on the market.

The OxyGo ResPlus Auto CPAP is our Reviews Team’s pick for “Best Value” because it provides all of the necessary functions at a much lower price point. Three of the standout features include its large color LCD screen that makes it easy to read the settings and other options on the machine. The humidifier tank holds enough water for one to two nights of use, but keep in mind that it’s always best to empty and clean the water chamber daily to avoid bacterial growth. Plus, it has both CPAP and APAP modes for standard and automatic functioning. Our Reviews Team also liked that the OxyGo ResPlus Auto CPAP machine is universally compatible with any CPAP mask on the market. This allows you to choose the mask you like best.

The fact that this sleep apnea device is heavier, at 5 pounds, and slightly louder, at 30 dBA, means that it ranks lower than the other devices we reviewed. It’s still quiet enough for undisturbed sleep and light enough to travel with on occasion. One downside our Reviews Team noticed is that the ResPlus Auto CPAP cannot use heated tubing, so be sure to only use it with standard, non-heated tubing.

OxyGo customer reviews

OxyGo is not accredited by the BBB and has an  F rating  on its website. Its BBB profile has no customer reviews, but has two unanswered customer complaints from January 2021 which is likely the reason for the rating. The complaints are in reference to OxyGo portable oxygen concentrators, not a CPAP machine. OxyGo has no profile or reviews with TrustPilot.

Positive airway pressure (PAP) is a type of breathing treatment where a machine uses mild pressure to push air through the airway to keep it open and clear while the user is sleeping. The sleeper receives air through a mask that’s connected to the machine by a flexible tube. The maximum and minimum pressure settings for your PAP unit are set by the prescriber based on the severity of your sleep apnea. Since the precise treatment and pressure the sleeper needs varies, there are four different types of machines your specialist can prescribe.

A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine disperses air at a consistent and fixed pressure throughout the night. CPAP is the most common type of PAP therapy device because it can be used for a variety of sleepers. This device is best for those with severe obstructive sleep apnea who need constant high pressure to keep their airway open while sleeping.

An automatic positive airway pressure (APAP) machine automatically adjusts the level of pressure according to the sleeper’s needs throughout the night. The machine monitors breathing patterns and adjusts the pressure as needed. Breathing patterns can change throughout the night (for example, depending on the user’s sleeping position), or over time (for example, if the sleeper’s weight fluctuates). A bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) machine delivers air at two pressure levels, a higher level while you are inhaling and a lower level while exhaling. This device is best for users with severe sleep apnea who have trouble exhaling against the CPAP machine’s constant pressure level.

Travel PAP machines weigh less than a traditional PAP unit, are compact in size, and should easily fit in luggage or carry-on bags. They also come equipped with rechargeable batteries, which is ideal when traveling. If you want to use your travel unit while flying , you should check with the airline’s PED (portable electronic device) policy before booking your flight.

How to get a CPAP machine

Before shopping for a sleep apnea machine, you will need a diagnosis and prescription from your doctor. “To diagnose sleep apnea, an overnight sleep study called Nocturnal Polysomnogram must be done,” said Elizabeth Lyda , registered respiratory therapist and research quality improvement specialist at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York. These devices require a prescription to purchase since they are class II devices regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). 6 This classification means that even though CPAP machines are effective therapeutic devices, they can pose risks to the user if used incorrectly or when they are used without medical recommendation and oversight. A CPAP machine can cost a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Devices on our list cost $590–$989. CPAP machines can be purchased with cash or credit card, but other payment options are available.

Health insurance: As with most medical devices, CPAP machine and mask coverage will depend on your insurance plan. Most private health insurance plans will offer some amount of coverage for CPAP machines and CPAP masks. 7 In order to maintain coverage, many insurance plans will require proof that you are using the machine nightly as prescribed. This information is typically stored in your machine or on a memory card and, depending on which device you have, that data can be accessed through an online portal, app, directly from the memory card, or supplied by your CPAP equipment supplier.

Out of 600 survey respondents, 29% used Medicare, Medicare Part B, or Medicare Advantage to help pay for their machine, while 28% used private health insurance and 43% didn’t use insurance.

Medicare: Medicare has specific terms for CPAP machine and supply coverage, which typically starts with a three-month trial. 8 After that trial period, Medicare will likely require confirmation from your doctor that you have been compliant with treatment. Medicare will want to know if you use the machine nightly as prescribed, and that CPAP therapy is helping your condition. Like oxygen concentrators, Medicare covers the rental of your CPAP machine as opposed to coverage or reimbursement to purchase the machine in full. You will need to get your CPAP device and supplies through a Medicare-enrolled retailer. Medicare will cover most of the cost of renting a CPAP machine for 13 months, after which you will own the device.

Retailer financing: Many retailers offer financing for CPAP machines, typically through third-party financing companies. CPAPSupplies.com and Oxygen Concentrator Store offer financing through Affirm , and CPAP shop offers financing through Bread Pay. These two financing companies offer plans with varying repayment terms and interest rates. You will also need to receive credit approval to use Affirm or Bread Pay. Respshop has in-house financing options and payment plans that do not involve a credit check.

Health savings account (HSA): An HSA is an account you can deposit pre-tax money into that can be used for eligible health expenses. 9 The full list of qualifying expenses includes respiratory equipment like CPAP machines. 10 HSA funds do not expire and will continue to be available until your funds run out.

Flexible spending account (FSA): An FSA is an account your employer deposits pre-tax money into and can be used to reimburse medical expenses like CPAP machines. FSA funds do expire if you don’t use all the money before the annual expiration date.

CareCredit: CareCredit is a credit card made specifically for health care expenses. CPAP machines are qualifying purchases if you have a CareCredit card, but you’ll need to make sure you purchase through a participating retailer. Eligibility for the card is subject to credit approval.

Features and specifications

Size and weight: Your CPAP machine will need to be the right size to fit on a nightstand or table next to your bed. Make sure that the surface you plan to place it on will have enough space for your CPAP machine, along with the things you typically keep next to you in bed. A crowded nightstand could result in accidentally bumping your CPAP machine, which could alter settings, or things falling onto the floor. Weight is also important if you want to travel with your CPAP. Heavier machines may be more cumbersome to pack up and travel with, so you may want to look at lighter CPAP machines like the Transcend Micro, AirSense 10, or AirSense 11.

Noise level: A CPAP machine will never be completely silent, but many of them are whisper-quiet (30 dBA or less). A low noise level means it is less likely the device will disturb your or a partner’s sleep. In our Reviews Team’s CPAP survey, 56% of respondents shared that their machine’s noise level didn’t affect their sleep at all, while 32% said they sometimes see their sleep affected. About 12% said the noise often or always affects their sleep.

Humidification: CPAP usage can lead to dry airways, which may cause irritation and discomfort, especially in the throat and nasal passages. Some CPAP machines have an integrated humidification system, while others have detachable humidification components. Humidification is either cool or heated. Heated humidification starts in the water chamber, and warmth and humidity are maintained throughout the system with heated tubing.

APAP vs. CPAP: APAP settings are designed to automatically adjust air pressure coming from the machine according to the pressure of your breathing, and adjustments stay within a set of prescribed pressures determined during your sleep study. Breathing pressure typically decreases once you fall asleep, so auto CPAP devices start with lower pressure and increase it once the machine senses that you’re asleep. Standard CPAP machines will increase air pressure as soon as you turn the machine on to start your therapy, and it will keep air pressure consistent throughout the night.

Mask styles and compatibility

CPAP therapy is meant to be used every night while you sleep. Many people have difficulty sleeping for other reasons, and wearing a mask for CPAP use can add to sleep issues. It’s important to find a mask that works for your face shape, sleep style, and comfort preferences. A CPAP device that is compatible with most masks on the market is ideal, especially for new CPAP users because you can try different masks with your CPAP machine to find the best mask for you. CPAP mask styles range from full-face (completely covers your nose and mouth) to nose-only styles.

Of the CPAP users we surveyed, 43% used a full mask and 26% used a nasal mask. Total face masks, nasal cannulas and pillows, hybrid masks, and oral masks were less common.

Philips Respironics CPAP machine recall

Philips Respironics is a leading name in CPAP therapy, so it is notable that its models are absent from our list. Philips issued a recall of many of its CPAP, bilevel positive airway pressure machines, and ventilator devices that were manufactured between 2009 and April 26, 2021. 12 The recalled devices contain a polyester-based foam that reduces noise and vibrations. This foam was found to break down in some units, and those small pieces were released into the breathing system and tubing. It’s a potential health hazard to inhale those particles. The FDA issued a list of affected models and instructions on what to do if you own or use one of the recalled units. 13

Other ways to improve sleep

Improving your sleep hygiene can make it easier to fall and stay asleep while using your CPAP machine, and finding the best mattress for your individual sleep style can make a significant impact on sleep quality. The right mattress can balance comfort with appropriate support for your body type and sleep style while addressing personal considerations, like choosing a mattress for back pain or to reduce overheating. 

Additionally, sleeping on an adjustable bed can allow you to customize your sleep position and alleviate some of the concerns that come with sleep apnea.

I’m a big traveler, so when I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea, my mind immediately went to the complexities of traveling with a CPAP machine . Once I got comfortable sleeping with my machine, I couldn’t imagine a night without it, even on the road. But each leg of a journey brought unique challenges, from packing to airport security to remembering to get filtered water for the machine’s water chamber (which often was not remembering and needing to buy expensive hotel room bottled water in a pinch).

That’s why I decided to splurge on the ResMed AirMini , a waterless CPAP machine that weighs less than a pound. I’ve already traveled with it both internationally and for weekend getaways, and it’s my new travel must.

How the ResMed AirMini Rates:

• Usefulness: 10/10. It’s crucial for me to use a CPAP to have a good night’s sleep, and a night away with this machine was no different. The one drawback is that it’s louder than my regular machine, so consider using a sound machine if you’re sensitive to noise (my favorite is the Marpac Rohm Portable White Noise Sound Machine ).
• Value: 8/10. This was a big purchase, as it wasn’t covered by my insurance. But I found myself in a position to buy when a year-end sale aligned with the need to use the remainder of my healthcare flexible spending balance. It may not be worth it for everyone, but as someone who is on the road at least once a month, I’ve found it a worthwhile investment. Plus, just think of all the money I’m saving on not having to buy hotel room bottled water.
• Durability: 10/10. No complaints yet. I’ve taken it on a week-long international trip (it works with an adapter plug ) and multiple weekend getaways with no issues.
• Portability: 10/10. It’s so small that I was able to fly on Spirit Airlines with no carry-on bag (the ultimate test). Plus, the machine uses humidification filters, which means no more lugging around a clunky water chamber.
• Cool Factor: 10/10. If CPAP machines are cool, consider this one Miles Davis (to paraphrase a quote from the movie Billy Madison ). But seriously, it is cool to manage your health, including getting a good night’s sleep on the road. It’s also discreet: It fits easily into a carry-on, so other travelers won’t notice you’re traveling with the machine.

Final Verdict: It’s a big investment, but the ResMed AirMini is a game changer for road warriors who use a CPAP.

The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP offers both CPAP and APAP settings . The CPAP setting provides a fixed level of air pressure, which is determined in a  CPAP titration study , while the APAP setting uses an algorithm to automatically adjust the air pressure to accommodate a sleeper’s changing breathing patterns. A sleep specialist can determine which mode is best for you and program the machine accordingly.

The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP is highly streamlined, even compared to other travel CPAP machines. Traditional humidifiers can be bulky, but the Z2 uses a disposable heat and moisture exchanger (HME) that uses moisture in the sleeper’s breath to provide humidification without a water tank.

Other Z2 features include ramp mode, a reusable Qlite muffler to quiet the sound, automatic start and stop, a Nitelog app to track sleep data, and a proprietary Z-Breathe algorithm that provides a more comfortable air pressure level.

What Comes With It

The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP comes with the components required to use the machine, such as a power cable, tubing, tube adapter, USB cable for data transfer, and filter. The user must  purchase their mask  separately, as is common with CPAP machines.

• Optional battery power source:  For people who want to use the Z2 Auto Travel CPAP without plugging the device into a wall outlet, a PowerShell accessory is available for an additional cost. This accessory provides enough power to run the device for a full night of sleep.

The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP is exceptionally streamlined and fits easily into a carry-on bag or purse. At 6.5 by 3.3 inches and only 2 inches tall, the Z2 weighs less than a pound and is one of the smallest travel CPAP machines on the market. The use of an HME also provides humidification without a bulky tank, so sleepers don't have to choose between small size and comfort.

APAP and travel CPAP machines tend to cost more than standard CPAP machines. The Z2 has an average price-point for a travel CPAP machine and is priced lower than most small APAP machines.

Is This CPAP Machine Easy to Use?

The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP features a backlit LCD screen and a settings menu that users can navigate using three large buttons. Most people are likely to find the Z2 easy to use, though some users may need to use glasses to read the display information.

How Compatible Is This Machine With Other PAP Products?

Like most other CPAP machines, the Z2 is compatible with all standard size and slim-style tubing as well as CPAP masks that work with standard tubing. The Qlite muffler is also compatible with all standard tubing.

Sleepers must purchase replacement heat and moisture exchanger cartridges from Breas Medical. Breas does not recommend purchasing a separate humidifier tank to use with the Z2 Auto instead of the HME cartridges, since using a humidifier may affect the Qlite muffler.

Smallest CPAP Machine on the Market

When it comes to traveling, the weight of your luggage matters—as we know from airline baggage fees and the increase in the amount of gas burned on road trips. However, traveling without your CPAP equipment will result in interrupted sleep for you and your partner due to the increased possibility of snoring as well as long and exhausting days due to daytime sleepiness . Not treating your sleep apnea on your travels can take away from your vacation due to a lack of quality sleep, causing irritability, grogginess, and the desire to take a nap. Quiet Design for Light-Sleepers

We’ve all been there—when you’re sleeping in an unfamiliar place, it can be harder to fall asleep and stay asleep due to foreign sounds and unknown sleeping arrangements. The last thing you want when traveling is a loud CPAP machine. Thankfully, Somnetics designed the Transcend Micro with sound and vibration dampening technology to quiet the amount of noise expelled from the machine. It has a unique air-bearing blower to deliver your therapy air without the sound of excessive blowing air. To further quiet the night, the Transcend Micro comes with a WhisperSoft Muffler to dampen the sound output for you and your partner.  

Quieter than a whisper, the Transcend Micro has a noise level of 27 decibels, which is comparable to the sound of rustling leaves. The sound level on the Micro can vary by up to two decibels, depending on your settings and if you choose to use the included WhisperSoft Muffler.

Notable Comfort Features: Adjustable Ramp and Pressure Relief Technology

Designed for your comfort, the Transcend Micro has adjustable ramp technology, GentleRise, to deliver you with a lower pressure when you first turn your machine on. The lower pressure when beginning your therapy ensures that you’re not experiencing your full therapy pressure all at once. The GentleRise feature will gradually increase your pressure settings until your doctor-prescribed pressure is reached. The Micro’s ramp technology is fully adjustable, so you can customize the amount of time it takes to reach your prescribed pressure in a range from zero to 45-minutes. You can also shut the GentleRise Ramp off completely. Before embarking on your travels, test out different ramp settings or select the identical amount of time as your standard machine to achieve the same comfort you’re used to at home. 

In addition to the GentleRise Ramp Technology, the Transcend Micro also has AirRelief Technology, which reduces your pressure on exhalation. You may have heard of this feature referred to as EZEX Pressure Relief Technology on previous Somnetics machines. If you’ve come to know and love the EZEX Pressure Relief feature, don’t fret—the AirRelief Technology is the same comfort feature you’re used to. The AirRelief Technology makes for a more natural breathing experience. When you breathe against your full prescribed pressure, you could experience breathlessness or difficulty catching your breath. To counteract this, the AirRelief Technology lowers your exhalation pressure while keeping your inhalation pressure the same to ensure your airway stays open.

Convenient 30-Minute Drying Mode for Your Mask and Hose

When you’re traveling, the last thing you want to do is worry about or waste your precious vacation time drying your CPAP hose or mask. With the push of a button, the Transcend Micro will start the convenient 30-minute drying mode, which removes any excess water from your previous night of therapy in your CPAP mask and hose to reduce contamination buildup. When moisture sits in your CPAP mask and hose, it can cause bacteria and mold to develop. Sitting water can also cause unwanted odors, which you may breathe in during your next night of sleep apnea therapy. When you turn on the drying cycle, a steady stream of air will flow through your hose to your mask to dry your equipment, ensuring that they are dry and ready to use when it’s time to hit the hay after a long day of adventures. 

Compatible With Most CPAP Masks

A unique feature of the Transcend Micro is that it can be used with (almost) any CPAP mask . With the Micro, you don’t have to compromise on your mask selection or purchase a totally new one, reducing your overall travel CPAP equipment costs.

However, there are a few versions of ResMed CPAP masks on the market that are only compatible with the AirMini Travel CPAP Machine. If you have one of these AirMini masks, it will not work with the Transcend Micro or any other machine.

Reliable Travel Battery Solution

If your next adventure takes you off the grid, a portable battery is the perfect travel companion. The Transcend Micro is compatible with the PowerAway P8 Portable Battery , which can be used as both a travel battery and a battery backup in the event of a power outage if you have it charged and ready to go at home. The PowerAway Battery can power your machine for up to 14 hours of run time, depending on factors such as your pressure settings or humidifier use. The Transcend Micro comes with an AC Adapter so that you can plug your machine into a standard wall outlet in the United States or Canada. If you are traveling abroad or to a country with a different outlet type, add a plug adapter to your CPAP setup to use your machine whenever life takes you.

FAA-Approved for In-Flight Use

For your next long cross-country or international flight, you can use your Transcend Micro on the plane with your PowerAway P8 Portable Battery, as it is FAA-compliant. 

AirMist Heat Moisture Exchange: Waterless Humidification 

If a traditional or built-in humidifier is a must-have in your at-home CPAP setup, then that should be an important feature in a travel machine. A CPAP humidifier adds moisture to your therapy air to prevent a dry mouth or nose . If you’re traveling to a drier or colder climate, then a humidifier will be even more beneficial to provide you with moist, warm air that can help relieve congestion. Luckily, for all our humidifier lovers, the portable Transcend Micro has AirMist Heat Moisture Exchange (HME) Technology, which is waterless humidification that allows you to leave the distilled water at home. When you breathe out, the HME traps the humidity from your exhaled breath and recirculates it back for your inhaled breath. HME allows you to receive the benefits of humidification without having to pack a separate humidifier. The AirMist HME will work with any CPAP mask without a short tube. Masks, like the AirFit P10 and the AirFit N20, have a short tube, which extends out and away from you and is about six inches to a foot long. To work properly, the HME needs to be connected to your mask’s elbow, so keep that in mind if your go-to mask has a short tube and you want to use the HME technology. 

To utilize the AirMist HME technology, you will need to purchase the HME cartridges (coming soon), which are also small and won’t take up much space in your travel bag.

Data-Tracking and Compliance: Utilize the MySleepDash App via Bluetooth

To be your own advocate and monitor your therapy data, the Transcend Micro is compatible with the mobile MySleepDash App, which is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. The MySleepDash App allows you to stay informed about your pressure information, leak summaries, and your number of therapy hours. The MySleepDash App will guide you through the setup process of your new Transcend Micro Travel Machine by providing you with helpful videos and useful information. On the app, you can also view your machine’s settings and access Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to arm yourself with the information you need for therapy success. Through the mobile app, you can download or share your compliance information with your healthcare provider. 

In order to connect your new Transcend Micro to the MySleepDash App, download the app and make sure that Bluetooth is enabled. If Bluetooth is successfully enabled, the button on the machine—that has the same Bluetooth symbol as your smartphone—will be blue. If it is showing white, then press the Bluetooth button on the machine again. After Bluetooth is enabled, follow the prompts on the MySleepDash App and scan the QR code on the bottom of your machine. 

Once you sync your machine and the app, ensure that your Transcend Micro Machine data is reaching and recording on the MySleepDash App by confirming the machine’s Bluetooth button is glowing green.

SleepStart: Automatic Start/Stop Technology

If a CPAP machine has a start/stop feature, then your machine will automatically turn on and begin delivering your therapy pressure when you put on your CPAP mask. Alternatively, when you take your mask off, your CPAP therapy will stop. This comfort feature allows you to get comfortable and effortlessly begin your therapy without getting tangled in your hose or straining to reach your machine’s power button on your nightstand. 

The Transcend Micro is equipped with SleepStart, which will engage when you put your mask on and start breathing as you normally would. Once your Micro is on, the ramp technology will engage unless you have that feature turned off. If you are having trouble with the SleepStart feature, it may be due to your mask configuration.

To end your therapy, remove your mask and test if your machine will turn off on its own. However, due to the machine’s air circuit configuration, it may not automatically turn off when you take your mask off, which will require you to simply push the power button. 

Air Filters: Transcend Micro PureFresh

To ensure you are receiving clean therapy air, the Transcend Micro uses the Transcend Micro PureFresh Air Filters (coming soon), which need to be replaced at least every six months or when they start to show signs of wear and tear. If you are visiting a dusty climate, you may need to replace your filters more frequently. If you are noticing louder than normal noise from your travel machine, that may also indicate that it is time to change your filter.

The filters are simple and easy to replace:

• Locate the tab on the right side of the filter cover to separate it from the machine.
• Remove and throw away the existing filter. 
• Place the new filter in your Transcend Micro.
• To reattach the filter cover, first, insert the left side of the cover and then click the right side, ensuring it is securely in place.

Resmed AirMini vs the Transcend Micro

Key Similarities Between the AirMini and the Transcend Micro

In the travel department, the AirMini and the Transcend Micro have numerous similarities that are worth noting to help you make an informed buying decision.

App Integration and Bluetooth Capabilities: Both the Transcend Micro and the ResMed AirMini have compatible smartphone apps to view your CPAP therapy data. The Micro has the MySleepDash App and the AirMini has the AirMini App. Since neither of these travel machines has a screen, the apps are the primary way to view your therapy information. 

It is important to note, however, that the AirMini is not compatible with the popular, ResMed MyAir App that would be used if you have an existing ResMed device . 

Exhalation Relief and Ramp Technology: Exhalation relief is designed to make your therapy breathing experience more natural by ensuring that you don’t have to breathe against your full therapy pressure when you exhale. The AirMini and the Transcend Micro both have exhalation relief technology to make your therapy more comfortable. 

Both machines also have ramp technology to ease you into your prescribed pressure, so you aren’t hit with your full therapy pressure when you initially put your mask on. However, some of our community members on CPAPtalk compare the ramp feature to breathing out of a straw when your therapy first begins. If you are experiencing this sensation as well, the ramp feature on both machines is fully adjustable and can be turned off completely. 

Machine Design: When it comes to the design, the AirMini and the Transcend Micro both do not have an LCD display or touch screen on the unit itself. Your machine settings and therapy data cannot be seen on the actual device. To see your CPAP therapy data, you will need to use the machine’s companion smartphone app.

Noise Level and Sound Dampening Accessories: Light sleepers understand—each decibel of noise matters. The AirMini ranges from 25 to 30 decibels, depending on your pressure and settings. Many of our AirMini customer reviews explain that the sound is similar to a white noise machine. If you use a sound machine at home but don’t have the luggage space to take it on your travels, you’re in luck, thanks to the AirMini’s white noise comparison. The Transcend Micro’s sound level is similar to the AirMini at 25 to 29 decibels. The sound level of these two travel machines is also similar to other travel machines on the market.

In addition, both the AirMini and the Micro have accessories that can be used to further decrease the noise output, but there are some significant differences. As we’ve explained, the Transcend Micro comes with the WhisperSoft Muffler Kit included and has sound and vibration dampening technology built in. The AirMini does not have any included sound muffling accessories. The WhisperSoft Muffler was designed by Somnetics to be used with the Micro, while, on the other hand, the AirMini does not have a companion accessory that’s designed by ResMed to reduce sound. Our CPAPtalk community members have mentioned that the AirMini can be used with the Q-Lite CPAP Muffler to quiet the noise.

Start/Stop Feature: The auto start/stop feature isn’t a major game changer when it comes to your CPAP therapy if you are able to press your machine’s power button before turning off the lights. However, if it is a feature that you’ve grown accustomed to in your at-home CPAP therapy experience, then don’t worry—both the AirMini and the Transcend Micro have automatic start and stop features, so you don’t have to fumble with your equipment while you’re sleeping under the stars. This feature can be finicky due to certain mask types, so make sure you test it before your travels if it’s a therapy must-have for you.

Filters : For confidence in your air quality, the AirMini and the Transcend Micro have compatible air filters. The AirMini Disposable Filters and the Transcend Micro PureFresh Air Filters need to be replaced every six months or sooner if they are discolored or dirty. Both machine’s filters are disposable, so no extra cleaning or maintenance is required.

Key Differences Between the AirMini and the Transcend Micro

To decide between the AirMini and Transcend Micro, let’s explore the major differences, so you are equipped with the information on which travel machine is right for your CPAP needs.

Size and Weight: A small travel CPAP machine, like the AirMini, paved the way for the Transcend Micro. Luckily for you, both the ResMed AirMini and the Transcend Micro will likely fit in the palm of your hand. The AirMini weighs 0.66 lbs while the Micro weights 0.48 lbs, making the Micro 0.18 lbs lighter than the AirMini. If you’re going on a hiking, camping, or backpacking trip, then traveling as light as possible matters. While the weight difference between the two machines isn’t major, if you are looking for the lightest travel machine, the Transcend Micro wins.

When it comes to the size of each machine, you want to be sure to analyze how much space it will take up in your travel bag. The AirMini has more of a 3D-rectangular shape while the Transcend Micro is like a 3D-sphere with a flat top and bottom. The Micro has the AirMini beat in the length category by 1.8 inches. However, in width and height, the AirMini is slightly smaller. 

Humidification: If you have grown accustomed to the comfort of a humidifier in your at-home machine, then you’re set with either the AirMini or Transcend Micro, which both have waterless humidification technology. Both machines reuse the moisture from your exhaled breath to moisten your inhaled air. As we discussed with the Micro, the AirMini also requires a small disc. Unlike the Micro, however, you have two cartridge options with the AirMini, Standard HumidX , and HumidX Plus . The Standard HumidX uses paper ridges to capture the moisture from your exhaled breath while the HumidX Plus has a wider radius to be even more effective at trapping moisture.

The major difference between the waterless humidification on the Micro is that you can use HME with any mask that does not have a short tube. Alternatively, the AirMini Standard HumidX and HumidX Plus waterless humidification can only be used with the setup packs that are designed for the AirMini: The AirFit P10 Nasal Pillow and the AirFit N20 Nasal . Unfortunately, this limits your mask choices and eliminates your ability to use the HME technology if you are a full face mask wearer. 

Mask Compatibility: The Transcend Micro truly shines in the mask compatibility category in comparison to the AirMini. The Micro is compatible with almost all CPAP masks on the market, giving you the ability to (most likely) travel with your favorite CPAP mask in tow. The almost universal mask compatibility feature allows you to save money since you hopefully won’t have to buy a specific mask or the necessary accessories. 

On the other hand, the AirMini was created to work with specific ResMed masks, which limits your ability to customize your CPAP setup to your comfort needs and may require you to purchase a new mask in order to use your AirMini. The AirMini is compatible with the AirFit F30 Full Face , AirFit F20 Full Face , AirTouch F20 Full Face , AirFit N20 Nasal , and AirTouch N20 Nasal . These masks can also be used with other machines on the market.

In addition, ResMed designed masks for use with only the AirMini, such as the AirMini AirFit N30 Nasal and the AirMini AirFit P10 Nasal Pillow . If the mask mentions the AirMini in its name, then that is your sign that it is only compatible with the AirMini. The AirMini-only masks are the one caveat to the Micro’s universal mask compatibility. 

We do have a potential solution for the AirMini’s mask selectiveness. As a workaround, we carry the Zephair AirMini Universal Adapter , so you connect your standard hose to your favorite CPAP mask. However, at its core without the Zephair adapter, the AirMini is not universally compatible, which results in an additional cost and extra items to pack if you choose to not use one of the ResMed masks we listed above. Because of this, the Transcend Micro wins in this category. 

Drying Mode: A standout feature on Somnetics machines, like the Transcend 3 miniCPAP Auto and Transcend Micro is the Drying Mode, which removes leftover moisture in your tube and mask to prevent condensation and contamination build-up. The AirMini does not have a drying mode feature, meaning you’ll have to manually do what the Micro automatically does by just pressing a button on the top of the machine, which may keep you from getting back to your travel adventures sooner.
