Prohibited Items

Consistent with heightened security measures across our nation, the PGA TOUR will continue its normal security policies and expand screenings to ALL patrons, sponsors, volunteers, media and vendors attending or working at all events.

While attending a PGA TOUR tournament, officials request everyone participate in making the event safe and enjoyable by being aware of their surroundings. Should you notice an activity or an individual that might be suspicious, notify a uniformed law enforcement officer, private security personnel, a tournament official, or dial 911. Everyone is urged to keep a simple phrase in mind: "See something, say something."

As the safety and well-being of everyone who attends a TOUR event is of the utmost importance, please become familiar with and adhere to the TOUR’s standard tournament policies which include a Permitted/Prohibited Items List and a Bag Policy.

The TOUR's Prohibited and Permitted Items List can be found here .

All persons and items are subject to search prior to being granted access to a tournament. Persons found to be in possession of prohibited items or bags that exceed the permitted size specifications, will be asked to return those items to their vehicle before being allowed to board shuttles or enter the tournament grounds. The tournament may not provide a “bag check” facility, so attendees are urged not to bring prohibited items.

*All portable chairs must be removed from the course each night.

6 Items You Need To Bring To A PGA Event (And What Not To Bring)

If you are an avid golf fan and a PGA tour event is coming to a golf course near you then it’s only natural that you are going to attend the event. After all, it’s not every day that you get the opportunity to watch the best golfers in the world play in person.

Once you have tickets, you are going to want to figure out what you are and aren’t allowed to take to the course with you. The last thing you want is to turn up at the course only to be turned away by security for having prohibited items with you. Today, we will be looking at what should (and shouldn’t) be in your bag when you go to a PGA golf tournament.

If this is your first time at a PGA Tour Event, check out our article on Spectator Etiquette (How To Act At PGA Event.) This article will outline all you need to know about the dos and don’ts as a spectator at a PGA Tour Event.

What You Should Bring To A PGA Golf Tournament

There are a few items that we would classify as necessities when it comes to spending a day at a PGA golf tournament. Without these items, your day isn’t going to be as enjoyable as it could be so take note.

Golf is typically a sport that follows the sun all year round. While it can be played in the wind and the rain, tournament organizers and players favor the sun. With that in mind, it is more than likely going to be a sunny day when you attend a tournament so make sure to pack a bottle of sunscreen.

No one can predict the weather though, so it’s always worth bringing an umbrella just in case. An umbrella may also come in handy if the course you’re visiting doesn’t have much shade. Your umbrella will help protect you from the sun and reduce the risk of sunstroke.

A Collapsible Chair

If you’re planning on getting your money’s worth and spending a full day on the course, then it’s going to be a struggle without a chair.

Many people choose to set up base, on a particular hole for an hour or so before moving on to a different hole, while others move around the course all day with a certain group. If you are in the former category, then bring a collapsible chair and make yourself comfortable. Chair bags are prohibited, though, so bring your chair folded up and loose.

A Mobile Phone

Your mobile phone is going to be the only way for your to take photos and videos throughout the day as DLSR cameras and video cameras are both prohibited at PGA tour tournaments. Your phone will also come in handy if you lose any members of your party throughout the day. Golf courses are huge, it’s entirely possible.

The PGA tour does have a strict mobile device policy , which we will look at shortly.

Food And Drink

While they do sell food and drink at most PGA tournaments, it’s more cost-effective to bring your own. Ensure that your food is sealed in a clear, plastic bag otherwise, it won’t be allowed in. In terms of a drink, bring one in a reusable plastic cup or bottle.

The final item that should be packed when you head to a PGA golf tournament is a pair of binoculars. There are going to be times when you are a significant distance away from certain players (particularly on greens) so get out your binoculars and gain a closer look at the shot without having to move.

What You Aren’t Allowed To Bring To A PGA Golf Tournament

The PGA tour is quite specific and strict on what you aren’t allowed to bring to the course. Take a read of these prohibited items and make a note of anything that you didn’t previously know.

While the idea of taking a drone to a golf course is quite appealing due to the incredible footage you would get, these are banned from PGA tour events so don’t bother turning up with one.

Posters and Banners

Posters/banners have risen in popularity at sporting events in recent years but as it stands you aren’t allowed to bring them to golf courses for PGA tour events. The reason being some banners could be offensive or they could distract the players.

Additionally, any kind of sports memorabilia such as flags, balls and photos are also prohibited.

Electronics Including Radios, TVs, and Speakers

Don’t bring any of these items to a PGA tour event as the noise has the potential to put off the players.

This seems like an obvious one but don’t bring any firearms, knives, or anything else that would qualify as a weapon to a PGA tour tournament. If you do, the weapon will be taken from you and the authorities will be called.

In general, pets aren’t allowed to PGA events, with one exception. If you have a service dog then they are allowed in.

Bags Larger Than 6×6 Inches

Finally, ensure that the bag you bring to the course is no bigger than 6×6 inches. If you can’t fit everything you want in a big of this size then, unfortunately, you are going to have to leave some items at home.

PGA Tour Mobile Device Policy

The final thing to look at is the PGA tour’s mobile device policy. While you are allowed to bring your phone to a PGA tournament, there are some rules that you have to abide by if you don’t want your phone confiscated. These are as follows:

  • Your phone must be on silent at all times
  • Do not use flash at any point whatsoever
  • The content you have filmed or photographed must only be used for personal use
  • No live streaming
  • Phone calls are only allowed in designated areas.

Final Thoughts

To conclude, if you thought you could just turn up at a PGA tour tournament with anything you wanted then think again because there are some strict rules in place. By following the information in this article, though, we can guarantee you will have an enjoyable and rule-abiding day at the event.

Hopefully you liked this article and found it informative. Check out our other  blog posts  if you liked this one!

'You Shall Not Engage In Conduct Unbecoming A Professional Caddie' – The Long List Of Regulations Bagmen MUST Comply With On The PGA Tour

The regulations surrounding what caddies can and can't do on the PGA Tour are numerous, according to the organisation's Player Handbook for 2024...

caddies on the PGA Tour

Caddies are governed by a strict set of regulations on the PGA Tour, as detailed in the official 2024 PGA Tour player handbook, and "players shall be responsible for the conduct and behaviour of their caddies during tournaments."

One of the things caddies can't do on the PGA Tour is get fined, however. The players are responsible for their caddies, so any fine falls on them. For example, the PGA Tour rulebook states that “a caddie may enter the locker room during the week to assist the player with retrieving items from his locker. Caddies are not allowed in the locker room at any other time. Players whose caddies enter locker rooms initially (not for reason provided above) will be fined $100. Subsequent fines during a season will be $250 and $500, respectively.”

However caddies can, in effect, be sacked by the Tour as those who “do not comply” with the Tour’s Caddie Regulations will be “subject to losing the privilege to caddie on the PGA Tour. Also, for any violation of these regulations, disciplinary action may be taken against the player for whom the caddie is providing services.”

There have been some famous player-caddie partnerships and anyway caddies are not optional for players are required to employ caddies. The caddie is also required to carry the clubs as pull or push trolleys and carts are not allowed.

Caddies and players alike are required to “present a neat appearance in both clothing and personal grooming.” But whereas “clothing worn by players shall be consistent with currently accepted golf fashion ,” the caddies have a more detailed list of clothing dos and don’ts.

Players cannot wear shorts, unlike caddies; but caddies can only wear “solid-colored khaki-style long pants, which touch the top of the shoe, or solid-colored, knee-length tailored shorts or skorts, and a collared shirt while on club property.” These have to be of “an acceptable colour.” As to what is acceptable colour, this is “determined at the discretion of the PGA Tour Chief Referee.”

More guidance is given on the colour of shoes, where “permissible colours are limited to white and earth tones such as navy, blue, black, brown, tan gray, dark green and the like. Bright colours that are intended to draw attention to a person’s footwear are not acceptable.” Nor are golf spikes , nor open-toed footwear.

However the Caddie Regulations are not always impositions on the caddies. Although they state that “Caddies shall not falsely register for accommodations or leave unpaid bills,” they also require that “caddies shall be paid promptly.”

Here are some other things caddies must adhere to on the PGA Tour:

– Caddies must conform to the Player Endorsement Policy

– Caddies may not walk on putting greens on any day, at any time, before or after a Pro-Am or official tournament round

– Caddies shall not be permitted on practice greens except to retrieve pitch and run shots or putts

– Caddies shall not hit shots or putts anywhere on the practice areas or course, except in specially approved competitions

– Caddies shall not engage in any conduct that is prohibited for players under the PGA Tour Anti-Doping Programme

– Caddies shall not engage in any conduct that is prohibited under the PGA Tour's Integrity Programme

– Caddies shall not engage in conduct unbecoming a professional caddie, as determined in the sole discretion of the PGA Tour

Etiquette and respect for fellow competitors is one of the first things golfers learn when playing the sport. It's ingrained in the competition. Players often applaud their competitors on the golf course, call penalties on themselves, move out of their line of site to remain still and silent when other players are hitting, etc. As such, we hope that the fans at THE PLAYERS Championship will show their pride at hosting this event and their community by applying the same standards to how they act as spectators. We all have pride in hosting one of the biggest sporting events in the world in our backyard. We want to make sure that pride shines through during tournament week. Fred couples returns to action on pga tour champions with six woods in his 'old man's bag', share this article.

pga tour bag policy

We haven’t seen Fred Couples on the PGA Tour Champions since late March in Newport Beach, California, where he withdrew during the second round. He tried to play the next week at the Galleri Classic in Palm Springs but pulled out just hours before the action started with a lingering back issue.

Couples did play at Augusta National for the Masters in April (did you ever think he was going to miss that?) but he shot 80-76, missed the cut but vowed to return in 2025.

This week, the Seattle native is feeling good enough to play his hometown event, the Boeing Classic at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge in Snoqualmie, Washington.

Friday’s first round will be just his 10th on the season and he’s brought with him a unique mix of clubs.

“I have six woods,” he said in a PGA Tour Champions video on X. “Driver, 3-wood, 5-wood, 4-rescue, 5-rescue and a 6-rescue.”

Fred Couples has six woods in his bag this week 😅 The 64-year-old is making his first start since April @BoeingClassicWA . pic.twitter.com/e68rclDCOk — PGA TOUR Champions (@ChampionsTour) August 9, 2024

You might call that an old man’s bag but he was quick to add that he’s “loving life” with this set up.

Couples tied for 26th at the Boeing a year ago. It’s been since March of 2023 that he’s posted a top 10. He’s playing alongside Steve Flesch and David Duval in Friday’s first round. There are eight regular-season Champions tour events before the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs begin.
