If this is your first time at a PGA Tour Event, check out our article on Spectator Etiquette (How To Act At PGA Event.) This article will outline all you need to know about the dos and don’ts as a spectator at a PGA Tour Event.

What You Should Bring To A PGA Golf Tournament

There are a few items that we would classify as necessities when it comes to spending a day at a PGA golf tournament. Without these items, your day isn’t going to be as enjoyable as it could be so take note.

Golf is typically a sport that follows the sun all year round. While it can be played in the wind and the rain, tournament organizers and players favor the sun. With that in mind, it is more than likely going to be a sunny day when you attend a tournament so make sure to pack a bottle of sunscreen.

No one can predict the weather though, so it’s always worth bringing an umbrella just in case. An umbrella may also come in handy if the course you’re visiting doesn’t have much shade. Your umbrella will help protect you from the sun and reduce the risk of sunstroke.

A Collapsible Chair

If you’re planning on getting your money’s worth and spending a full day on the course, then it’s going to be a struggle without a chair.

Many people choose to set up base, on a particular hole for an hour or so before moving on to a different hole, while others move around the course all day with a certain group. If you are in the former category, then bring a collapsible chair and make yourself comfortable. Chair bags are prohibited, though, so bring your chair folded up and loose.

A Mobile Phone

Your mobile phone is going to be the only way for your to take photos and videos throughout the day as DLSR cameras and video cameras are both prohibited at PGA tour tournaments. Your phone will also come in handy if you lose any members of your party throughout the day. Golf courses are huge, it’s entirely possible.

The PGA tour does have a strict mobile device policy , which we will look at shortly.

Food And Drink

While they do sell food and drink at most PGA tournaments, it’s more cost-effective to bring your own. Ensure that your food is sealed in a clear, plastic bag otherwise, it won’t be allowed in. In terms of a drink, bring one in a reusable plastic cup or bottle.

The final item that should be packed when you head to a PGA golf tournament is a pair of binoculars. There are going to be times when you are a significant distance away from certain players (particularly on greens) so get out your binoculars and gain a closer look at the shot without having to move.

What You Aren’t Allowed To Bring To A PGA Golf Tournament

The PGA tour is quite specific and strict on what you aren’t allowed to bring to the course. Take a read of these prohibited items and make a note of anything that you didn’t previously know.

While the idea of taking a drone to a golf course is quite appealing due to the incredible footage you would get, these are banned from PGA tour events so don’t bother turning up with one.

Posters and Banners

Posters/banners have risen in popularity at sporting events in recent years but as it stands you aren’t allowed to bring them to golf courses for PGA tour events. The reason being some banners could be offensive or they could distract the players.

Additionally, any kind of sports memorabilia such as flags, balls and photos are also prohibited.

Electronics Including Radios, TVs, and Speakers

Don’t bring any of these items to a PGA tour event as the noise has the potential to put off the players.

This seems like an obvious one but don’t bring any firearms, knives, or anything else that would qualify as a weapon to a PGA tour tournament. If you do, the weapon will be taken from you and the authorities will be called.

In general, pets aren’t allowed to PGA events, with one exception. If you have a service dog then they are allowed in.

Bags Larger Than 6×6 Inches

Finally, ensure that the bag you bring to the course is no bigger than 6×6 inches. If you can’t fit everything you want in a big of this size then, unfortunately, you are going to have to leave some items at home.

PGA Tour Mobile Device Policy

The final thing to look at is the PGA tour’s mobile device policy. While you are allowed to bring your phone to a PGA tournament, there are some rules that you have to abide by if you don’t want your phone confiscated. These are as follows:

  • Your phone must be on silent at all times
  • Do not use flash at any point whatsoever
  • The content you have filmed or photographed must only be used for personal use
  • No live streaming
  • Phone calls are only allowed in designated areas.

Final Thoughts

To conclude, if you thought you could just turn up at a PGA tour tournament with anything you wanted then think again because there are some strict rules in place. By following the information in this article, though, we can guarantee you will have an enjoyable and rule-abiding day at the event.

Rory mcilroy won’t return to pga tour policy board after ‘uncomfortable’ response from players, share this article.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The PGA Tour’s best players are at Quail Hollow Club this week for the sixth of eight $20 million signature events this season, but the early discussion so far at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship has been focused off the course.

PGA Tour Policy Board member Webb Simpson had planned to step down from his role and have Rory McIlroy – who resigned from the board back in November – take his place. After some “complicated” and “messy” discussions, Simpson will see out his term which ends in 2025 after players voiced their concerns about McIlroy returning.

“There’s been a lot of conversations,” McIlroy said with a coy smile, noting how the discussions partly reminded him of why he left the policy board in the first place. “It got pretty complicated and pretty messy and I think with the way it happened, I think it opened up some old wounds and scar tissue from things that have happened before.”

“There was a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason,” he added. “I think the best course of action is if, you know, there’s some people on there that aren’t comfortable with me coming back on, then I think Webb just stays on and sees out his term, and I think he’s gotten to a place where he’s comfortable with doing that and I just sort of keep doing what I’m doing. I put my hand up to help and it was — I wouldn’t say it was rejected, it was a complicated process to get through to put me back on there. So that’s all fine, no hard feelings and we’ll all move on.”

Simpson contradicted McIlroy no less than an hour later and denied any negative sentiment towards the world No. 2’s potential return to the board.

“I think the players on the board were very supportive of him being more involved, and in those conversations I think they all see the vital role he plays not only on the PGA Tour, but he’s a DP World Tour member and they’re such an important piece in the game of golf and our Tour,” said Simpson, who also noted he didn’t get any sense that McIlroy wasn’t welcomed. “So his perspective is tremendous to us. He’s a global player, always has been, so I just think his views are important, and the other guys feel the same.”

McIlroy, who has been on the front lines for the PGA Tour in its battle with LIV Golf, joined the board in 2022 and was supposed to serve out his term until the end of this year until he abruptly resigned late last fall. McIlroy was then replaced by Jordan Spieth via a board vote. After sticking up for the Tour for the better half of two years, his decision to bail on the board didn’t sit well with his colleagues .

“He was very clear that it was too much for him. He had business dealings, he has a kid, he wants to focus on his game. Trust me, I get it. But once you quit, you’re not getting back,” Kevin Streelman, a former member of the policy board who ran against McIlroy for Player Advisory Council chairman, told Golfweek . “I wouldn’t quit on something that you were elected to by your peers. To want back in is peculiar.”

Since he left the board, McIlroy has been adamant and outspoken on why the Tour needs to get a deal done with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund – LIV’s financial backer – in order to reunite the game.

“ Golf and the PGA Tour has been so good to me over the years, I just feel like it’s my obligation or duty to try to give back and try to set the next generation of players up like we were set up by the previous generation,” McIlroy said of his reasoning to try and rejoin the board after stepping down. “I think there’s a responsibility with every generation to try to leave the Tour, leave the place that you’re playing in a bit of a better spot than it was before. That’s what it’s about.”

Despite being stiff-armed out of consideration, McIlroy is “still optimistic” a deal will get done and believes Simpson staying on “is a really good thing.”

“I think he’s got a really balanced voice in all of this and I think he sees the bigger picture, which is great,” McIlroy explained. “My fear was if Webb stepped off and it wasn’t me that was going in his place, what could potentially happen. Yeah, I’m really happy that Webb has made that decision to stay on and serve out the rest of his term.”

As a 35-year-old from Northern Ireland, McIlroy made an interesting comparison of the current state of professional golf to the Good Friday Agreement that brought peace to Northern Ireland and Ireland in the 1990s.

“I would say I’m impatient because I think we’ve got this window of opportunity to get (a deal) done, because both sides from a business perspective I wouldn’t say need to get it done, but it makes sense,” he explained. “I sort of liken it to like when Northern Ireland went through the peace process in the ’90s and the Good Friday Agreement, neither side was happy. Catholics weren’t happy, Protestants weren’t happy, but it brought peace and then you just sort of learn to live with whatever has been negotiated, right?”

“That’s sort of how I, it’s my little I guess way of trying to think about it and trying to make both sides see that there could be a compromise here. Yeah, it’s probably not going to feel great for either side, but if it’s a place where the game of golf starts to thrive again and we can all get back together, then I think that’s ultimately a really good thing.”

The Tour’s Chief Competitions Officer Tyler Dennis wasn’t able to provide a material update on the status of the conversations between the PIF and the Tour, but did note the discussions are still ongoing and positive.

Mike 'Fluff' Cowan leaving Jim Furyk's bag for PGA Tour return

Caddie Mike "Fluff" Cowan and Jim Furyk have parted ways amicably after 25 years of working together.

Cowan, who was on the bag for Tiger Woods in the late 1990s, is returning to the PGA Tour.

Cowan is working with Taiwanese pro C.T. Pan at this week's CJ Cup Byron Nelson in McKinney, Texas.

"It's hard to part ways after 25 years," Cowan said, per USA Today's Golfweek. "Sometimes the right thing to do is staring you right in the face and you've got to have the guts to do it."

Furyk and Cowan have worked together since the 1999 Masters.

The timing of the move for Cowan is based on simple economics, as Furyk has been sidelined with injuries over the past two years. His best finish in three starts on the Champions Tour this season is a T33 at the Hoag Classic in March.

"We play for $2 million. They play for $8, $20, $25 million," Furyk wrote in a text to Golfweek. "I knew it was a good opportunity for him, and C.T. has been playing pretty good. (Fluff) was hesitant. Because he's a great person at heart. But I pushed and we both knew it was best for him and his family."

Pan, 32, has earned $674,187 so far this season, compared to $19,464 for Furyk.

Furyk's son, Tanner, is scheduled to caddie for the 2003 U.S. Open champion at three to four events this summer.

Cowan has previously caddied for Ed Sabo (1976-78), Peter Jacobsen (1978-96) and Woods (1996-99) in addition to Furyk.

Kris Kim, 16, shoots 68 in PGA TOUR debut at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson

McKINNEY, Texas – 16-year-old Kris Kim received sound advice before his PGA TOUR debut at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson on Thursday morning.

“At the end of the day, it's just hitting a golf ball around, and then whatever you shoot, whatever you shoot,” Kim’s mom Ji-Hyun Suh, a former LPGA player in the 1990s, told her teenage son.

The accomplishment for the week would be the experience gained for Kim – process over results. But Kim can be proud of the results, too. The English amateur shot a first-round 68 with two chip-ins, beating the field average and setting himself up with a chance to make the cut.

Kim would be the youngest player to make the cut in a PGA TOUR event since Kyle Suppa, 16, made the cut at the 2015 Sony Open in Hawaii.

What’s in Kris Kim’s bag?

“I would say it was pretty good,” Kim said of his 68 at TPC Craig Ranch. “Conditions out there were pretty easy today, especially with the greens having a bit of rain. But, yeah, I would say 3-under I would definitely take.”

Kim opened with a par on the 10th, his first hole of the day, then birdied the 11th, holing a 15-footer. That calmed the nerves, which Kim admitted were “pretty high.” After bogeys on 12 and 15, Kim chipped in for birdie on 16 and birdied the par-5 18th to make the turn in 1-under 34. He offset two bogeys on the inward nine with a pair of birdies, then chipped in again on the par-5 ninth, hooping his pitch from 67 feet away for eagle.

16-year-old Kris Kim eagles final hole to shoot 68 at THE CJ CUP

“I would say short game is my strength, but just got lucky a bit today,” Kim said.

Kim bested Russell 5&4 in a singles match last fall in the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup. While Russell has gained notoriety as the No. 1 junior in the world, Kim’s resume is littered with accomplishments, too.

In 2023, Kim won the Boys’ Amateur Championship, the European Boys’ Individual Championship and the McGregor Trophy. He is the first amateur golfer to be sponsored by CJ Group, which sponsors numerous pro golfers, including Sungjae Im, Si Woo Kim, K.H. Lee and Byeong Hun An. Kim is the first European amateur to sign an NIL contract with Under Armour and the first British amateur to sign an NIL deal with TaylorMade. He went undefeated in the Junior Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, claiming 3.5 points as Europe won the event for the first time since 2006.

Kim could do one better than Russell if he makes the cut this week in a PGA TOUR event. With an abundance of low scores, it will take another round like Thursday’s for Kim to make it a reality.
