Inside Staterooms

Inside staterooms are located on the interior of the ship and don’t have any windows. These are the best rooms on a cruise ship if you’re looking for a lower-cost option or plan to spend the majority of your time on adventurous excursions, relaxing by the pool, or dining in our world-class restaurants at a leisurely pace.

Oceanview Staterooms

Oceanview staterooms are ideal if you want to enjoy savings while being able to soak in beautiful ocean views from your room.

Though the windows aren’t as large as staterooms with verandas, these staterooms can still sleep the same number of guests thanks to the spacious bed arrangement (which fits two adults) and the pull-out couch for an additional adult guest.

Premium Sky Suite with Infinite Veranda

The Premium Sky Suite provides luxurious amenities and experiences. You’ll have open-air access to the sea, where you can even dine in your suite al fresco. At 337 square feet and featuring a spa tub and shower, the Premium Sky Suite is a good option for couples on a romantic getaway.

Ultimate Sky Suite with Infinite Veranda

The biggest Sky Suite at 365 square feet is aptly named: the Ultimate. With an outward-facing tub and shower, you can be close to the ocean’s edge with the touch of a button in your fully automated suite. With more space than the other Sky Suites, this is an excellent option for those who crave comfort.

Royal Suite

The Royal Suite does indeed offer special treatment. From the floor-to-ceiling window in the shower, where you can feel one with the ocean, to the in-suite espresso machine, you’ll have every need taken care of. There are 559 total square feet in the Royal Suite, which includes a separate living area, bedroom, and private veranda.

Penthouse Suite

Slip on your complimentary monogrammed robe and slippers and take in the beauty of the Galapagos Islands from your floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows. The Penthouse Suite is the ultimate haven for travelers, and our most spacious suite on Flora is up to 1,288 square feet in size. Is upgrading to a balcony room worth it?

Many passengers plan on spending the majority of their cruise outside of their room, whether they’re pumping iron at the gym, relaxing in the spa, or suntanning out on the pool deck. It’s up to you if a balcony feels like an important feature for your stay.

If you enjoy the leisurely routine of sipping your morning coffee on the veranda or want a private space to watch the sunset with your loved one, you might consider upgrading to a stateroom with a veranda.

Choose a Deck

Once you’ve chosen your stateroom category, you can decide what deck you want to stay on. When you book a cruise early, you’ll have a better opportunity to choose what deck of the ship you want to be on.

Some staterooms have larger verandas (typically ones on the bow or aft of the ship ) and some have partially blocked views, which may or may not be a big deal to you.

Foodies may want a stateroom closer to the many incredible dining options onboard. Returning cruisers might have a favorite bar or lounge where they become a regular during their vacation.

If you’re traveling with friends or a group, you’ll want to consider how far apart your staterooms are. Will it be harder to meet up if they’re on the opposite side of the ship? Is it better to be on a higher deck?

Each of the twelve ships in the Celebrity fleet is unique in terms of their deck designs and the way the decks are organized. Some cruisers prefer lower levels as you’re less likely to feel any rocking while the ship is in motion, but that varies from person to person.

• Forward: The very front of the ship
• Midship: The middle of the ship
• Aft: The back of the ship

Aft staterooms are closer to the ship’s vibrations and engine, so keep that in mind if you want as silent of a stateroom location as possible. Forward and aft staterooms tend to have more sway than midship, which is something to keep in mind as you’re booking your room.

How to choose the right stateroom on a viking ocean cruise.

Now that we’ve sailed with Viking Ocean Cruises on the Viking Star and have given you the first impressions from our sailing, we thought it might be helpful to circle back around and offer you some help on how to choose a stateroom that’s right for you.

One of the first things to know is that all of the Viking Ocean Cruises ships are identical, so our Viking Ocean Cruises Stateroom Guide will help you regardless of which of the Viking ocean ships you’re considering.

The Viking Ocean Cruises ships hold a maximum of 930 passengers with 465 staterooms divided into the following categories:

• 42 Veranda (V) staterooms
• 272 Deluxe Veranda (DV) staterooms
• 104 Penthouse Veranda (PV) staterooms
• 32 Penthouse Junior Suites (PS)
• 14 Explorer Suites (ES)
• 1 Owner’s Cabin (OS)

As you can see, Viking Ocean Cruises has designed every stateroom to have a veranda with the smallest offering passengers a comfy 270 sq. ft. This size is quite a departure from competitor ships where many of the entry level staterooms can be as small as 150 sq. ft.

All right, let’s start  by exploring the specific differences between the various staterooms, and we’ll share our opinions at the end of this article.

Highlights of the Viking Ocean Cruises Staterooms

Veranda Staterooms

There are 42 Veranda Staterooms (V) on each of the Viking Ocean Cruises ships. These staterooms are located on Deck 3 with the V1 staterooms towards the front and the V2 staterooms towards the rear.

Each room has the following features:

• 11:00 a.m. embarkation
• 3:00 p.m. stateroom access
• Priority shore excursion reservations: 60 days prior
• King-size Viking Explorer bed with luxury linens
• Large flat-screen LCD TV
• Luxury toiletries

• Security safe, hair dryer, 110/220 volt outlets
• Interactive TV & movies-on-demand
• 24-hour room service

Deluxe Veranda Stateroom s

When choosing a stateroom remember that there are 272 Deluxe Veranda Staterooms (DV) on each of the Viking Ocean Cruises ships with classifications going from DV1 – DV6.  Besides earlier access to your stateroom and shore excursion reservations, the biggest difference between these staterooms is the location on the ship.  You will also find a small difference in price between each of these categories.  Let me explain:

• DV1 – there are just a dozen or so of these staterooms and they are located in premium spots on the ship alongside the Explorer Suites.  These sell out quickly as there are so few of them.
• DV2 – there are quite a number of these stateroom located primarily mid-ship on decks 5 and 6.
• DV3 – again, just a handful located in desirable locations on the ship.
• DV4 – there are quite a number of these staterooms located primarily mid-ship on deck 4.
• DV5 – about 25 of these located on deck 4 fore and aft.
• DV6 – less than 20 of these located on deck 3 just behind the atrium.

The Deluxe Veranda Staterooms are physically identical to the Veranda Staterooms and offer the following improved features:

• 2:00 p.m. stateroom access
• Priority shore excursion reservations: 67 days prior
• 1 guaranteed priority reservation at each specialty restaurant (60 days prior to departure)
• Mini-bar with soft drinks, water & snacks, replenished once daily
• Luxury robes, slippers & toiletries
• Direct dial satellite phone & cell service

Penthouse Veranda Staterooms

There are 104 Penthouse Veranda Staterooms (PV) on each of the Viking Ocean Cruises ships.

These staterooms are the largest of the Veranda Staterooms, are located on decks 5 and 6 and come with the following more improved features:

• 1:00 p.m. stateroom access
• Priority shore excursion reservations: 77 days prior
• 2 guaranteed priority reservations at each specialty restaurant (70 days prior to departure)
• Mini-bar with alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, water & snacks, replenished once daily
• In-suite binoculars, coffee maker & cashmere blanket

• Shoe shine & pressing
• Bottle of champagne

Penthouse Junior Suites

There are 32 Penthouse Junior Suites (PS) on each of the Viking Ocean Cruises ships.  These junior suites each feature a close-off between the bedroom and living area and come with the following features:

• 11:00 a.m. priority stateroom access
• Priority shore excursion reservations: 87 days prior
• 3 guaranteed priority reservations at each specialty restaurant (80 days prior to departure)

• Laundry, dry cleaning, shoe shine & pressing

Explorer Suites

There are 14 Explorer Suites (ES) on each of the Viking Ocean Cruises ships. Each of these suites is large, luxurious, has the very best locations on the ship with expansive verandas, and are certain to appeal to luxury travelers looking for the quiet ship experience that is found with Viking.

• Priority shore excursion reservations: 97 days prior
• 3 guaranteed priority reservations at each specialty restaurant (90 days prior to departure)

• * Stateroom configuration varies depending upon the location on each deck

After you choose a stateroom, the next decision is where on the ship you’d like your stateroom to be located.  So, to help with your choice, here’s a peek at the various decks on Viking Ocean Cruises ships.

Putting it all together to choose the perfect stateroom

At the end of the day, I suppose it will be your wallet that will determine which of the staterooms will best suit your needs.  But once you choose a stateroom that best matches your finances, you will also notice that the staterooms also have a further division into various classes.  For example, the Deluxe Veranda (DV) has six different classifications (DV1 – DV6) depending on its location on the ship.  Therefore, a DV1 stateroom, as it has a better location on the ship, will carry a higher price tag than a DV6 stateroom.

In our opinion, Viking Ocean Cruises has built a ship that will nicely meet the needs of a great swath of the boomer travelers – you should be able to choose a stateroom that fits your needs perfectly.

Your comparison of state rooms is very helpful. However perhaps you should point out that the Excursion booking in advance according to state room category means that those in the lower categories at the end of the line can be seriously disadvantaged. We are booked into a Veranda Stateroo for our upcoming cruise to Japan and have discovered that all the prime iconic sites are fully booked – the reason for spending so much money on the cruise was to be able to visit them and now we find we cant. e.g for the two days we are docked at Hiroshima not one paying excursion is available to us. Many other excursions in the cruise are also fully boked. We feel this to be very unfair,and that we have been discriminated against by wealth. Surely Excursions should all be released at the same time and not with a possible 40 ,day difference. Perhaps it would be helpful if you could warn your clients about this.

First of all, don’t forget that everyone gets a complimentary shore excursion in every port. So, everyone gets a complimentary tour that will give you the highlights in each port.

However, after that, the optional shore excursions are bookable by stateroom category with the Suites getting first dibs and the regular Veranda staterooms getting the last availability. And as there are only 42 Veranda staterooms on the Viking ships, there are a lot of folks ahead of you vying for the available optional excursions.

With this being the case, we recommend that: 1) consider booking at least a DV6 if this is a problem for you. 2) Mark the date that the shore excursions come available to you and call right away. Most people forget and tend to want to book these shore excursions at the last minute.

If it’s not too late, maybe the best course of action would be to upgrade to a DV6 and get access to those shore excursions at an earlier date.

We have booked a DV2 room on the Viking Star on level 6. It appears that this room is directly under the main pool. Have we made a mistake? Is there going to be a lot of noise above us?

If you can, you might want to move forward under the Wintergarden. If not, however, it’s not like this boat is full of 30-year-old partiers. The ship is going to be pretty quiet after dinner.

We’re sure we want a Deluxe Veranda category but as you said within that category there are different locations. We were leaning toward a DV4 but can you mention any other advantages of location on the ship in terms of forward, aft, which deck, port or starboard. Also just to doublecheck within the categories DV1-DV6 you get the exact same amenities? Thanks so much, your article is helpful!

The amenities for DV1 through DV6 are identical. The only difference is the location on the ship. I generally don’t make a big deal out of which side of the ship you sail on as you will ultimately be sailing in the shipping lanes 20 or more miles out to sea. That far out, you really can’t see much. The DV2 and the DV4 staterooms are popular as they are more midship and will offer less movement should you get into high seas.

We are booked for a 28 day ocean cruise in room 6060 on Sun across from the elevators….will this be noisy?

I wouldn’t worry about it. With these ships being full of baby boomers and older, the ships are pretty quiet and most everyone is in bed after dinner. 🙂 Have fun!

We’re looking at a Norway cruise in May of 2021. Will we spend much time on the veranda (we like it outside, did an Alaskan cruise in June, and spent most of the at sea time on the veranda)? Is it worth the money to upgrade from Penthouse Suite to Explorer Suite? I saw a review that said the ES 3000 (bow on deck 3) was noisy from anchors and thrusters – is that the case? And is it a good idea to use Viking Air to make flight arrangements? Thanks!

I think the suite question is more of a personal preference kind of thing. If you plan to spend a lot of time on your deck, those Explorer Suites are very nice. My personal favorite on these ships are the Penthouse Jr. Suites. However, I would not likely spend a whole lot of time on my deck, so the Penthouse Jr. is kind of like Goldilocks, “just right”. Again, happy to talk on the phone.

With regards to your concerns about being below the infinity pool, keep in mind that Viking’s ships are full of 70-year-olds. Not a party ship by any stretch of the imagination. Therefore, the only sounds that you are likely to hear are the occasional movements of a chair on the deck above your head. And the most pronounced of this would likely be in the early evening as people are getting ready for dinner and the staff is preparing the area for the evening. And, as most are sound asleep by 10:00, I don’t know that I’d be too worried about it. I hope this helps. 🙂

We’re booked on a 2021 Western Mediterranean Ocean cruise on Viking (unfortunately rescheduled from this year) and I’m currently researching a possible 2022 In Search of Northern Lights cruise. The ships, although different names, look identical in their layout. We’re booking a DV4 on our first cruise and we’ll be on Deck 8. I noticed that on the ship’s layout there are only a few DV4 rooms on Deck 7 and Deck 8 and the rest are suites. Wondering if you’ve seen this layout on the cruise(s) you’ve been on and can comment on how the location is? Also can you comment on using Hurtigruten Expedition instead for Northern Lights? Thanks!

Just so you know, Viking’s ships are all identical when it comes to stateroom layouts. The DV4 staterooms are all on deck 4 with a few DV1s on decks 7 & 8. If you don’t mind being towards the front of the ship, we like the location of the DV1s on decks 7 & 8. If you like, please give us a call and we’d be happy to help you with the booking.

With regard to Hurtigruten, they are a completely different kind of experience as they are expedition ships. We like that, you just have to be careful NOT to get on one of their “mail ships” that stop in every port along the way. Hurtigruten’s new expedition ships are beautiful and we look forward to sailing with them ourselves one day.

What are the differences between Explorer Suite 1 and 2. We already know about the location but my question is which has more windows and light in it, explorer Suite 1 (forward) or Explorer Suite 2?

I’m not certain about the glass space from one to the other, but I would guess that the ES1, being larger, might have more light in the room. Did that answer your question? We have the option of booking cabin 8001, but will this be noisy with the Explorer lounge next door and foot traffic to that area? Cabins are very limited on the cruise we are booked on. Basically, is upgrading to this cabin worthwhile?

Stateroom 8001 is a fairly quiet area of the ship. Generally speaking, folks are going to enter the Explorers’ Lounge from deck 7. We would like to talk with you. I have researched 2022 Baltic cruises pretty thoroughly and keep coming back to Viking. We haven’t decided between Russia & Baltic Sea and Viking Homelands but we know the door is closing on both. If we could design our own cruise, it would end in Copenhagen because we want to visit the south of Sweden for a short time. But we could travel from Stockholm or Bergen. hello, we are on the viking star world cruise jan 2022 and are booked in pv2. a room in ps3 just opened up, but is a handicap room. Would this be a better room? what is the advantage, disadvantage of a handicap room. thx

The handicapped rooms are designed for those who use a wheelchair. For example, a shower that can accommodate a wheelchair rolling in. It would NOT be a desirable room for those who are not handicapped.

We are scheduled to cruise on the Viking sky in room 5001 explorer es1. A balcony is very important to us. I am hearing that the es1 balcony is very closed in? Should I try to get a different room?

We prefer the suites on the back of the ship. While the deck is more narrow, it provides a fair amount of shade. Also, there is less wave movement in the back of the ship versus the front.

We are in a room DV2 on Viking Sky and across from the Lift. Are we able to hear the Lift each time it is used in evening?

We generally like to keep our clients away from the lift and the stairs. However, these are pretty quiet ships and don’t have kids running up and down the stairs. So, if you can move, do. But if not, I wouldn’t lose sleep over it. I doubt you’ll hear a thing.

We are going on the Greek Odyssey Cruise at the end of this month. We are in DV6 3065 which appears to be somewhat midship. Any thoughts on this room? Also, we are probably going to book another cruise while on the ship. Can we use your agency as a referral?

We sailed with Viking in the ES2 on deck 6. You should know that if you get into some rough seas, it is possible that you could get some spillage from the infinity pool above your head on your day bed on decks 4 & 5. Just a little insider’s tip. 🙂

Are the DV6 cabins located above the night club Torshaven noisy?

It depends on what is going on in there. I’d spend just a few more $ and get into a DV4.

We just returned from a Viking Ocean to Iceland and wished someone would’ve warned us about being in the back of the ship on deck 6(6096), as we heard constant noise from the crew above us dragging chairs/tables about from as early as 5a till well past midnight. It was unbelievable and totally ridiculous that there wasn’t some type of soundproofing put in during the building of this brand new ship(Mars). Hope folks will think about this when booking…I know we will if we ever go again.

We are interested in sailing on the Viking Sea for the Empires of the Mediterranean cruise from Athens to Venice. Do you happen to know the square footages on each deck for the Explorer Suite – ES2.

I would choose 3095. The view from the veranda is better as you’re looking right out over the ocean. 3001 has quite a bit of ship between you and the ocean. Also, it seems to me that the ride is better in the ship’s rear than the very front as the propellers seem to have a grounding effect. Although, I have no scientific proof of that. I checked with our Viking representative, and he could not put his hands on a chart showing room measurements other than square feet. Also, Viking does not have a waiting list, so you’re best to keep an eye on their website for fallout. It’s not uncommon for there to be cancelations prior to people making the large final payment.

Hi – my husband and I are interested in the South American tour on the Viking Jupiter – looking at the Penthouse Junior Suite… My husband needs grab bars for getting off the toilet and for using the shower. He is not wheelchair-bound (although he does need it for shore excursions). We carry stick-on bars for the bathroom, but need a tile or glass wall for that to work – do you know if the shower wall next to the toilet is near enough for this to be feasible in the PJS? Which are the desirable suite numbers for this?

Not much. Perhaps a little from people congregating and talking. But I wouldn’t be too concerned. When booking staterooms, we tend to avoid that area, but it shouldn’t be a serious worry if everything else is sold out away from the laundrette.

Hello. I see in the earlier post here that the Viking ES2 aft explorer suites on the ocean. Cruises are stated to vary slight in size from the 5th deck to the 4th deck with the es2 aft being about 100 sqft larger on the 5th deck. Viking has told me twice now that ‘all es2 the aft are the same size’. Is this true? Can any compare being on the fifth deck for an es2 vs being on the fourth deck. Does the overhang from deck seven cause less sun on the fifth deck? I know the rooms are both great back there but curious about size and also overhang from above. Thanks!!

We cruised on Viking Sky in a PV2 suite. This time we are looking at Viking Star cabins 5025, 4039, 4041 or 5004 There is a substantial difference in price My concern is the lack of storage space i.e., drawers, and size of room. This is New York to Bergen. Could you provide information on these level of cabins

I just got this information from our Viking rep:

Cabins 4039 4041 are dv4 ( deluxe verandas ) 270 sq feet vs PV 338 sq feet The bathroom is the same size I imagine dressers and storage area would be same if not very similar to size Pv has 12 more sq feet on balcony and 56 sq feet more inside Dv 213 interior 57 veranda 35 bathroom Pv 269 interior 69 veranda 35 bathroom These are the cabin sizes in sq feet

3097 is a DV1, where 4097 is a DV4. So there are price differences between the two. The DV4s and DV2s are generally the most midship, and generally, the staterooms folks gravitate to if they are worried about seasickness. However, 3097 is in the back of the ship and will give you beautiful 180º views. So, I would pick the DV1 if you don’t mind the additional expense.

Secondly, as it doesn’t cost you any more money to book with an expert travel advisor, I recommend finding one. And in particular, one that has been on these ships multiple times to guide you better. And, of course, we’d be happy to help. Just give us a call.

Question- On the western Mediterranean viking cruise leaving from Rome, Is it best to be in an odd # stateroom on the right side of the ship? That way at port and at sea, you are facing the scenic landscape?

We don’t recommend that our clients worry too much about what side of the ship they are on. However, yes, if you can book the cruise facing the land, then that’s what we generally will look for first. However, keep in mind, that in many locations, you will be sailing in the shipping lanes that are 20-30 miles out to sea and there is very little land to see from that distance. So, yes, but the side facing the land, but don’t get hopes too high that you will always see land.

currently booked on viking mars sailing august 17 have pv2 cabin 5028 booked looking at pv1 cabin 5090.looking at changing to cabin5090 is $100 more . also looked at the penthouse junior suite. seem to pricey. are they worth it ?

When we book Viking’s Penthouse Veranda (PV) staterooms, we default for the PV1 staterooms towards the aft of the ship vs. the bow. There is more wave movement in the bow of the ship. I prefer the Penthouse Junior Suite over the Penthouse Veranda as we enjoy the larger bathroom, and one can close off the living area from the bedroom. I am an early riser.

Hello! Newbie here. Any info on stateroom 6001 on a Viking Star ship? It is the 1st cabin next to the bridge on deck 6. I do not know if that is a plus or minus … is there a better access and/or visual advantage or potentially should stay away from due to noise or wind? Thanks!

Thanks for stopping by. We have personally sailed in stateroom 6001 on Viking. It’s a PV1 stateroom in the very front of the ship. While we found nothing objectionable about the stateroom, we would prefer and recommend a PV1 toward the aft of the ship. Being in the very front of the ship allows for more up-and-down movement if you find yourself in waves, while the aft of the ship is more grounded to the ocean because of the ship’s propellers. So, if there is still availability on your particular sailing, I’d move towards the back of the ship. I hope that helps.

we are going on the Viking Star in December for the Ancient Mediterranean Treasures cruise. We have a DV1 and were assigned Stateroom 4122, which looks great to me, but would like your opinion on it. I do sometimes feel a little queasy for the first day or so. Will this be a problem on the back of the ship. Do I need to pack extra dramamine. Also, wondering about the weather about the weather in Istanbul. Being from Florida, we’re looking forward to the chilly Christmas weather, but not quite sure what to pack. thank you for your insights.

The best place to avoid sea sickness is in the center of the ship, and the second best place is the back of the ship. So I wouldn’t worry too much. The DV1s on the back of the ship are quite lovely.

In December, Istanbul experiences cold and wet winter weather. Daytime temperatures typically range from 45°F to 52°F, while nighttime temperatures drop to between 39°F and 45°F. Rain is frequent, with about 4 inches of precipitation expected over 11 days, and the city is often overcast or mostly cloudy about 57% of the time. Although snow is rare in December, the city’s proximity to the sea can make it feel colder due to the winds. Visitors should prepare for variable weather by dressing in layers and bringing an umbrella.

Everything you want to know about cabins and suites on Carnival Cruise Line ships

Picking a cabin on a Carnival Cruise Line ship isn't nearly as complicated as picking a cabin on, say, a Royal Caribbean or a Celebrity Cruises ship.

Unlike some of its biggest competitors, Carnival isn't known for a huge range of cabin categories on its vessels.

That means that when you're trying to find the best Carnival cruise ship cabin for you, you'll have an easier time than you will when booking with some other lines.

The vast majority of the accommodations on Carnival ships fall into one of three broad buckets: Windowless "inside" cabins, oceanview cabins and balcony cabins.

You'll find relatively few suites on Carnival ships. Each of the vessels in Carnival's recent Vista-class series, for instance, offer fewer than 75 suites. Each of the line's earlier Conquest-class ships have around 50 suites. The oldest Fantasy-class vessels have 28 suites and 26 junior suites.

This is in part due to Carnival's focus on offering an affordable product. The typical Carnival customer isn't in the market for a super fancy, high-priced suite.

That said, Carnival has seen the success that some of its competitors have had with a bigger range of upscale accommodations, and it's eyeing more suites for future vessels. The line's two newest ships, Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration , each have 180 suites — more than twice the number found on the vessels Carnival was unveiling a few years ago.

Note that Carnival's two oldest ships — those that are part of the 1990s-built Fantasy Class — have relatively few balcony cabins by today's standards. (After retrofitting, they have around 150 balcony cabins, out of a total of more than 1,000 cabins in all.) In part because of this, Carnival has been phasing Fantasy-class ships out of its fleet in recent years.

A Carnival Cruise Line cabin primer

As is typical for many cruise ships, Carnival vessels offer cabins in four broad categories: Windowless "inside" cabins, oceanview cabins, balcony cabins and suites.

On newer Carnival ships, a significant portion of cabins are balcony cabins — the rooms everyone wants these days. But the ratio of balcony cabins to non-balcony cabins on Carnival's newer ships isn't nearly as high as on the newer ships of some rival lines such as Royal Caribbean.

About 44% of the 2,004 cabins on Carnival's Carnival Panorama (launched in 2019) are balcony cabins, for instance. Compare that to the 65% of cabins on Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas (launched in 2018) that are balcony cabins.

As noted above, Carnival ships also have fewer suites than you'll find on the ships of some of its rival lines. By contrast, the line's newer ships have a higher percentage of inside cabins than you'll find on the newer ships of some rival lines.

Here's a breakdown of the broad cabin categories on Carnival Panorama, which is typical of the line's newer ships:

Inside cabins: 789 (39%) Oceanview cabins: 254 (13%) Balcony cabins: 891 (44%) Suites: 70 (3%)

On older Carnival ships (and, in general, all older cruise ships), there are far fewer balcony cabins. Fewer than 10% of cabins on the line's two oldest vessels, Carnival Paradise and Carnival Elation, are balcony cabins. The two ships date to 1998.

On both Carnival Paradise and Carnival Elation, inside cabins and ocean-view cabins make up the majority (nearly 90%) of accommodations, and suites account for fewer than 10% of rooms. Here is the breakdown for Carnival Paradise:

Inside cabins: 420 (40%) Oceanview cabins: 466 (44%) Balcony cabins: 98 (9%) Suites: 78 (7%)

The takeaway here is that you'll have a tougher time locking down a balcony cabin on an older Carnival ship than on a newer vessel. If you're planning a cruise on one of the line's older vessels and a balcony cabin is a must, you'll want to book early to make sure you get one.

You'll also want to book early if you're aiming for a suite — particularly if you want one of the best suites on a Carnival ship. An old saw in the cruise industry is that "ships sell from the top and the bottom." That is, the first cabins on any vessel to sell out are the most expensive cabins, which are the suites, and the least expensive cabins, which typically are the inside cabins. The "middle" sells last.

Design-wise, Carnival's cabins and suites are fairly basic and comfortable, if not super stylish. Cabins on recently unveiled or overhauled vessels mostly have a soothing palette of creams and blues. Cabinetry in these rooms is a crisp and clean faux wood. Cabin bathrooms are neutral.

One exception is the new Carnival Venezia , which has a darker (faux) wood finish to furniture in cabins that ties into the ship's Italy theme.

Inside cabins on Carnival Cruise Line ships

Inside cabins are the cabins you stay in when you're on a tight budget. On any Carnival ship, they almost always are the least-expensive option when you're booking a cabin, and you often can save considerable money by booking an inside cabin versus an ocean-view or higher-level cabin.

What you'll give up, of course, is that ocean view. Your room will have four walls and no windows offering a glimpse of the outside world.

On many cruise ships, inside cabins are smaller than oceanview and balcony cabins. But on Carnival ships, that's not always the case. On Carnival Panorama, for instance, most inside cabins measure 185 square feet. That's the same size as the interior area of some oceanview and most balcony cabins on the ship (not including the extra square footage from the balcony).

Inside cabins on Royal Caribbean's new Wonder of the Seas , by contrast, measure just 149 square feet — quite a bit less than the inside cabins on Carnival Panorama.

Note that, in a quirk of the cabin categorization system at Carnival, there are a few inside cabins on some Carnival ships that do, indeed, have a view to the outside world. These cabins either have an obstructed view (often due to lifeboats) or a porthole, such that the view isn't all that great. For that reason, the line classifies them as inside cabins.

Oceanview cabins on Carnival Cruise Line ships

With an oceanview cabin, you get a window looking out to the sea but not an attached balcony where you can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air.

Carnival's newer ships have relatively few such cabins, as generally cabins that face outwards now are built with balconies. But older Carnival ships are loaded with oceanview cabins.

Oceanview cabins on Carnival ships can sometimes be bigger than inside cabins and even bigger than balcony cabins (when comparing their interior space). On Carnival Panorama, some oceanview cabins measure 185 square feet — the same as inside cabins. But there also are bigger "standard" oceanview cabins that measure 220 square feet and "deluxe" oceanview cabins that measure 230 square feet.

Balcony cabins on Carnival Cruise Line ships

Balcony cabins are what everyone wants these days, and Carnival is building its newest ships with far more of them than in the past. As noted above, about 44% of the cabins Carnival Panorama are balcony cabins. But that percentage jumped to 56% on the newer Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration. It will be the same on Carnival Jubilee, a sister vessel to Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration coming out in December 2023.

The typical Carnival balcony cabin has a contemporary look, with clean lines and relatively minimalist furniture. It typically features twin beds that can be converted into a king bed, a built-in desk area and a sofa that often pulls out into an additional bed. Some rooms have pull-down bunks to create more sleeping spaces. Balcony cabins typically measure around 185 square feet, not including the veranda area, which often measures 35 square feet.

Note that on some Carnival ships, specific categories of balcony cabins have larger balconies than most. These are wonderful for sitting out and watching the waves. Often these rooms are at the back of the ships overlooking the wake.

For instance, Carnival Panorama has "Family Harbor" and "Havana" balcony cabins with 60-square-foot balconies overlooking the wake. That's 71% more balcony space than the typical balcony cabin on the ship.

Carnival Panorama also has "Havana Cabana" balcony cabins with even bigger, 100-square-foot balconies.

Suites on Carnival Cruise Line ships

As noted above, Carnival ships generally don't offer a lot of suites. For the most part, the suites they have are relatively modest in size and amenities compared to the suites at some of the line's rivals.

The biggest suites on Carnival Panorama, the ship's eight Grand Suites, have 345 square feet of interior space, plus an 85-square-foot balcony. Contrast that to the biggest suites on Royal Caribbean ships, which can measure more than 1,500 square feet.

Suites on Carnival ships also haven't traditionally come with butlers and access to private concierge lounges like the suites on many other vessels.

Still, some of that has begun to change with the debut of Carnival's new Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration. Carnival went big with the suites on the groundbreaking, 5,282-passenger vessels — the biggest Carnival ships ever.

Unveiled in 2021 and 2022, respectively, Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration each feature two sprawling Presidential Suites that measure 1,120 square feet — bigger than any other accommodations in the line's fleet.

Located at the top of each ship on Deck 17, the complexes have separate living and sleeping areas and the most expansive balconies in the Carnival fleet — all unusual-for-Carnival features. Measuring more than 600 square feet, the balconies also offer a lounging area with a large sunbed and a private outdoor hot tub and shower.

The Presidential Suites are among 180 suites you will find on Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, the most ever for a Carnival ship.

The two ships have 11 different categories of suites in all, four of which are part of a new premium "Excel" category of suites with extra amenities and access to a new-for-the-line, resort-style enclave at the top of the ships called Loft 19.

In addition to the two Presidential Suites, the Excel suites include a dozen 861-square-foot Excel Aft Suites that overlook the back of each ship and boast separate living rooms and bedrooms and large wraparound balconies with hot tubs.

Slightly smaller are a dozen 710-square-foot Excel Corner Suites offering separate sleeping and lounging areas and wraparound balconies. A step down are six smaller Excel Suites that measure 614 square feet.

Every one of the suites in those categories is bigger than any suite found on Carnival Panorama.

Passengers staying in all four categories of Excel suites on Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration have access to a dedicated concierge phone line and guaranteed dining times at the extra-charge specialty restaurants found on the ships (except for Japanese eatery Bonsai Teppanyaki and the Chef's Table). Other upgraded amenities for Excel suite passengers include complimentary Bottomless Bubbles soda packages, room service and laundry service, sparkling wine upon arrival and upgraded bathroom toiletries.

The new Loft 19 enclave found on both Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration offers full bar service, a private pool surrounded by sun loungers and cabanas available for rent.

Bottom Line

Fun-focused Carnival offers a solid mix of cabins on its vessels for a range of price points. If you're looking for an inexpensive vacation option, the inside cabins on Carnival ships are more spacious than the inside cabins you'll find on the ships of some rival lines. Oceanview cabins on Carnival ships also can be larger than normal for the category. Balcony cabins on Carnival ships hold their own in size against most competitors. Just don't expect a huge number of suites when sailing with Carnival.

I always book the interior cabins on cruises — and it's not because I'm cheap

• I'm a frequent cruiser who's been on more than 25 voyages, and I always book interior cabins.
• Interior cabins on cruises are for anyone who wants to travel smarter.
• They're usually the cheapest, and the lack of a balcony or window encourages me to explore the ship.

When I started cruising in 2003, my family insisted on booking a balcony stateroom or a suite.

Having a big cabin to share was nice, but we didn't spend much time in the room and seldom used the balcony. It was a costly amenity that was largely unused.

When I started sailing independently, I booked balcony rooms out of habit.

Years later, I saw an inexpensive last-minute deal on a cruise from New York on Norwegian Cruise Line's Getaway, but it was in a 100-square-foot solo cabin without so much as a window.

I went for it. Since then, I've solely booked interior staterooms. I'm convinced these cabins are the smartest choice.

Interior cabin or not, you're unlikely to spend much time in your room — or on its balcony

No matter the cruise line, there's always more to enjoy outside the cabin than in it, from the spa to ports of call.

After 25 cruises and more than a decade of sailing in balcony rooms, I can estimate I've probably spent just a few hours on cruise-ship balconies.

Spending mere minutes or an hour on a balcony per cruise doesn't justify the extra cost .

And unless you've booked an extra-large balcony or a suite, the outdoor space will likely be teeny tiny.

Even cabins designed for families, like the 299-square-foot deluxe family ocean-view stateroom on the Disney Fantasy, don't have a balcony big enough for a group of four to sit comfortably.

Add in the potential for noisy neighbors or windy conditions that may force you indoors, and balconies become largely a waste of space and money.

Interior cabins are often just as big as, if not bigger than, rooms with windows

Though you're spending more money, you often aren't getting a bigger room by opting to have a window.

They vary by deck, location, and ship, but interior staterooms can be the same size as or larger than ocean-view ones.

For example, on Holland America Line's Rotterdam, double-occupancy interior staterooms are 143 to 225 square feet, and ocean-view staterooms are 175 to 282 square feet.

Interior cabins have fun features you don't get in exterior ones

Technology has helped make interior cabins feel comfortable instead of claustrophobic.

I've enjoyed the one-way window into the ship's corridor in Norweigan Cruise Line's interior cabins. Its cordless metal blinds let me adjust the light coming in, and sliding shutters offered a complete blackout.

Disney Cruise Line's interior rooms feature "magic" portholes, where footage featuring surprise character visits is displayed on a porthole-shaped monitor.

Some Royal Caribbean interior rooms have floor-to-ceiling virtual "balconies," which are screens that project real-time outside views.

I like that interior staterooms save me money so I can go on even more cruises

The savings add up, especially if you're on a tight budget or cruise often.

Plus, there's always a chance you could get upgraded to a balcony room for free if a cruise is undersold or you have a high-enough loyalty status.

I use the money I save on my room for onboard expenses on my next cruise — which I'll take in an interior cabin, of course.

Kimberly Semien knows how to seize a beach day. The 47-year-old lives far from the sea in Moore, Oklahoma, so when she visited Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in the Bahamas in May, she made the most of it.

Semien, who was on a week-long MSC Cruises sailing with her husband Phillip, spent the day reading under an umbrella, taking naps on the beach and swimming. “This water was crystal clear,” she said. “Like, I could see all the way down to my feet and tell what color my nail polish was.”

She appreciated the simplicity of the destination, which is devoid of the thrill rides and big water slides some other cruise line private islands have. “I could go to ( Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Oklahoma City ) or Frontier City and do the other stuff, but having the ocean, that's something we don't have here, so I take advantage of that,” said Semien, who works as an electric company switchboard operator.

The focus on nature is intentional. “We don't have huge theme parks, we don't have water parks,” said Ocean Cay Managing Director Andrew Brett. “We're all about the natural beach day experience.” But there’s more to the 103-acre island than what passengers might see at first glance.

Ocean Cay is also the site of scientific work aimed at addressing the impacts of climate change on marine habitats. The island is ramping up educational opportunities for guests in the coming months, offering more than just fun in the sand and sun.

"Sustainable tourism is the way to go," said Brett. It's the future, and I think it's what consumers and our guests want."

How is MSC restoring Ocean Cay?

The island was the site of industrial mining of aragonite sand before it was abandoned. MSC signed a long-term lease on the island in 2015, with the agreement they would uphold conservation work, and began cleaning it up. The company removed over 7,000 tons of scrap metal and moved 400 hard coral colonies from debris on the ocean bed to a place where they could grow.

The Bahamian government designated Ocean Cay and the surrounding waters a marine reserve in 2020.

Restoring coral reefs at the site is a key focus for the MSC Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the MSC Group, which owns MSC Cruises. Through its Super Coral program, the foundation is growing critically endangered coral to be outplanted within a 64-square-mile area surrounding the island.

“According to conservation scientists, the key to reversing the rapid decline in coral reefs lies in assisting coral’s natural selection process by establishing certain hardy species and varieties, dubbed ‘Super Coral’, which are more resilient to severe environmental stresses like extreme heat,” the foundation’s website reads.

Marine heat waves caused mass coral bleaching – a sign of stress – and die-offs in the Florida Keys and the Caribbean in 2023. Many of the reefs at Ocean Cay were impacted but have remained “very healthy” overall, according to Dr. Owen O’Shea, Marine Research Program Manager at the foundation.

Those events also provide useful intel. “Essentially, we monitor the reefs here and look for signs of bleaching, disease and increased mortality as part of our holistic marine management, so when we see a reef that has experienced significant bleaching and yet there remains colonies of seemingly healthy and living corals despite what the overall reef has experienced, we then source fragments from these surviving colonies.”

The island’s nursery corals experienced bleaching as well, but 100% survived. “This is evidence – albeit anecdotal – that our selection process for nursery specimens is valid and that our proof of concept is working, that is, selecting for those genotypes that may be exhibiting a greater (adaptation) to increased water temperature,” he said.

MSC also planted 75,000 plants and shrubs and 5,000 trees and palms, 95% of which are native to the Caribbean, in an effort to create a “natural infrastructure,” he added. Native plants can help conserve water, prevent erosion and provide food and shelter for animals.

The team has seen birds return to the island and turtles come back to nest.

“So I think nature is also vindicating that what MSC has done is sustainable in the long term,” O’Shea said.

Last year, marine conservation nonprofit Mission Blue – led by oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle – named Ocean Cay a "Hope Spot," a site deemed critical to the ocean’s health. “This recognizes its comprehensive restoration efforts and commitment to protecting marine biodiversity,” Earle said in a video announcement .

What can guests do at Ocean Cay?

MSC largely lets nature do the talking at Ocean Cay, with many activities taking place in or near the water. Visitors can go snorkeling, paddleboarding and kayaking, or play beach soccer and volleyball. Guests can climb a lighthouse that offers sweeping views and a light show at night. Ships stay at Ocean Cay from at least early morning through sunset, and often overnight.

Of course, relaxing beach days are also on the menu, with cabana rentals and loungers available. Guests can also snack on Bahamian cuisine, sip drinks, and visit an on-site shopping village.

Semien and her husband spent their day in an area exclusive to guests of the Yacht Club, MSC’s ship-within-a-ship concept . They also had access to a private restaurant. 

O'Shea noted that the island's walking pathways were also designed to steer people away from sensitive areas so that vacations and conservation efforts could coexist.

What's coming to Ocean Cay? 'We all have a piece to play'

MSC plans to further integrate those in the coming months. A marine conservation center on Ocean Cay will host both working scientists and students, and educational opportunities for guests, with pavilions, coral exhibition tanks and a lecture hall. The facility is expected to be accessible to cruise passengers in March 2025.

While many current tours take place in the water, guests will be able to take a new land-based tour and hear about the island’s transformation, see wildlife like iguanas, pelicans and egrets, and learn about the marine ecosystem beginning later this month (the tour will incorporate a visit to the conservation center upon its completion). Snuba – a cross between scuba diving and snorkeling that doesn’t require certification – will also allow visitors to see corals that are deeper underwater starting in mid-September.

MSC has taken other steps to minimize Ocean Cay’s carbon footprint, such as barring single-use plastics from the island and utilizing mostly solar power. The company added a third solar farm this year as part of enhancements.

And while sustainability is still a work in progress for the cruise industry, including MSC, only the line’s newer, more energy-efficient ships stop at the destination.

When guests visit the management building on the island, Brett said he relishes sharing the details of those efforts with them “and how we all have a piece to play in replenishing the natural world and the environment that we take so much from.”
