What are the can’t-miss tourist spots in Ifugao province aside that every avid adventurer should visit aside from marvelous rice terraces? Find out more on this comprehensive article.

Ifugao is world-renowned for its majestic Banaue Rice Terraces. These man-made structures signify the brilliant and ancient engineering skills of the Ifugao people. If connected from one end to another, these terraces can span halfway around the globe.

But more than these earthen masterpieces, Ifugao also boasts of other eco-cultural wonders. In fact, the rice terraces are just icing to what Ifugao offers.

As usual, many of the spots I included are off-beaten. This means that they are unspoiled by the impacts of mass tourism. It is my hope that showcasing them would lead to sustainable management.

This will not only sustain the natural environment and protect local culture but also promote community-based development.

Now, here are the must-see tourist attractions in Ifugao.

The best months to visit Banaue are during the months of April to May and October to November since these are the times when the rice terraces are at their greenest and most scenic state.

Visiting during the rainy seasons of July and August is not recommended due to the possibility of landslides in some areas making it difficult for activities like hiking and trekking.

How to Get to Banaue

Inside a bus to Banaue

But as they say, the journey is indeed worth it once you see the postcard-perfect view of the Banaue Rice Terraces. There are a number of routes that you can take when going to Banaue:

It takes about 9 hours (depending on traffic) to get from Manila to Banaue and the only way to get there is via land transportation. There are no direct plane flights available to the province of Ifugao. Most people choose to travel by bus during nighttime so that you can arrive early in Banaue the next day and have more time to explore it.

The Ohayami Bus Transit which can be found in the corner of Fajardo Street and Lacson Avenue in Sampaloc Manilla operates from 9PM daily. If you want to reserve seats in advance, they accept booking online through their website.

Another option is Dangwa Transit which has their terminal in Cubao. Be sure to arrive at the station early if you plan to go by Dangwa bus since they operate only one trip daily and accommodates passengers on a first come, first serve basis. Their earliest schedule leaves at around 8PM.

The bus from Baguio to Banaue takes approximately 3 hours including transfers and departs at least three times a day. You can go by Ohayami Bus transit stationed along Otek Street near Burnham Park or KMS bus that offers two trips daily and can be found near Rizal Park.

Local houses at Batad Rice Terraces in Banaue

The top places to stay here are in the Banaue town proper or Batad. However, you must consider that Batad is less accessible since there is no road that directly leads to the village. It takes approximately 20 minutes to walk/hike in and out of this place.  Given that it is more secluded, there is no proper signal in Batad, therefore, be prepared to unplug and disconnect.

As they say, there’s no better way to spend your vacation than to be one with nature. Banaue will surely not disappoint.

Here are some of the most recommended places to stay in Banaue:

Batad Top View Homestay and Restaurant

Popular with backpackers and tourists alike, Batad Top View Homestay is at the end of a 100-yard side trail off the main Batad rice paddies. It’s like a hidden gem in the middle of nowhere. What visitors love most about this place is that it gives you a front-row seat to an unobstructed view of the Amphitheater Rice Terraces.

Uyami’s Greenview Lodge

A family-friendly basic hotel that’s conveniently located near the Banaue Rice Terraces. The hotel also has its own restaurant for guests who would rather stay, relax and enjoy the view within the area.

Bogah Homestay

Located 10 minutes away from the town center, Bogah Homestay offers a convenient location for guests coming from the city. It offers a relaxing ambiance as it provides a beautiful overlooking view of the rice terraces and the town’s river valley.

Ramon’s Home Stay in Batad

Experience the traditional Ifugao houses and wake up to the magnificent view of the Batad Rice Terraces. Their huts are simple, but the breathtaking views make up for it.

You’re also in for a treat as the owner Ramon goes the extra mile by organizing bonfires and storytelling sessions at night. Guests are encouraged to join and socialize as Ramon shares stories about Batad and the Ifugao culture. Truly a recommended place to stay if you want to immerse in the local’s way of living.

Banaue Homestay

The cozy Banaue Homestay is right in the center of town, which makes it the easiest choice for tourists. With its perfect location, it is close to everything and is literally just 10 minutes’ walk from Banaue town proper and the bus station. On a good day, the view from their balcony makes you feel like you’re looking at a little piece of heaven with the clouds almost touching some of Banaue’s beautiful rice fields.

Native Village Inn

Upon entering the driveway to the Native Village Inn, you’ll be welcomed by a sign that reads: “Welcome to Paradise. We hope you have a pleasant stay.” Indeed, the place is a paradise in its own way.

Imagine looking at the green, luscious stretch of rice terraces while having your coffee in the morning or over a bottle of beer during dinner. Imagine listening to the sound of nothing but the flowing river or the cheerful tunes of the playful birds as the sunsets. Nature at its finest is what you will get from staying at the Native Village Inn.

A part of its charm is also the fact that you can experience their traditional Ifugao tribal huts while savoring all that Banaue has to offer. The owners and staff show genuine friendliness that makes you feel a part of their community.

There’s more to Banaue than rice terraces. The place is full of spots to discover that you will surely not run out of things to do here. Just make sure to fuel up and energize since most of the activities almost always involve a bit of trekking and walking. Nothing that you can’t handle anyway!

View of Banaue Rice Terraces at dusk

It’s amazing to think that these rice terraces were created thousands 2000 years ago by the Ifugao people and still stands marvelously up to this as a symbol of the impressive skills and hard work of the Ifugao people who cultivate them through the years.

The rice terraces of the Philippines in the Cordillera region were built to address the problem of rice farming up the slopes of mountains.

Surrounded by rugged terrain, the Ifugao people had to find a way to grow rice despite the landslides and erosion around the area. You would be amazed to know that they are using the same ancient irrigation system up to this day.

Commonly referred to by the locals as the 8th Wonder of the World, Banaue Rice Terraces is more than just a sight to behold but a bewildering remnants of the years and years of the Ifugao’s inspiring way of preserving and cultivating their rice culture – a culture that have been intricately woven in their way of living.

For instance, their major traditions are closely tied to their planting and harvesting seasons. They perform thanksgiving celebrations during harvest season and strictly observe “tungo or tungul”, known to be their days of rest during the off season.

Immerse in the Ifugao culture at Tam-An Village

Traditional native house in Banaue, Ifugao

Aside from souvenirs, the village is also known for its native Ifugao houses referred to as the “no-nail houses”. These houses are built out of Amugawan trees, carefully and sturdily used as timbers to hold the houses together.

Upon entering, you can see authentic wooden carvings and designs that ultimately represent the owner’s cultural heritage. Visiting this side of town gives you a quick glimpse of the Ifugao’s way of living through the years.

Tappiyah Falls in Batad, Banaue

The one-hour trek from Poblacion to Chappah Falls in Barangay Bocos is surely worth it with its cold and refreshing water. It also offers a panoramic view of the whole town, as well as a close perspective of the rice terraces.

The Tappiyah Falls in Barangay Batad is also popular among tourists.  You’re in for a treat with its enormous natural swimming pool. Don’t forget to bring your swimming gear and packed lunch as you enjoy the sight and sound of this magnificent waterfall.

The museum displays over a thousand pieces of indigenous artifacts. It is located 1.8 kilometers south of downtown Banaue and is accessible via a 10-minute tricycle ride from the town center.

Practical Information and Tips

Ifugaos planting rice at dusk Banaue Rice Terraces

Activities and itineraries in Banaue require a great deal of walking, hiking and trekking so it’s better to be physically prepared.

You will get a weak mobile signal and sometimes even none in Batad so make sure you won’t be needing your phone for work or any urgent matters while you’re there. You’re on vacation anyway!

If it’s your first time, drop by the Tourism Office of Banaue so that they can orient you about available tours and transportation transfers.

Some tours don’t require you to get a guide but for someone not familiar with a place like Batad, it would be better to have one to walk you through and lead your path. You’d rather spend your precious time ticking off the itineraries on your list than being lost.

Be mindful of the schedule and availability of public transportation especially in Batad to avoid spending more. Public jeepneys leave Batad at 9AM and returns from Banaue at 3PM.

Bring clothes that are appropriate for trekking and the cold weather. Bear in mind that the temperature in the mountains can be unpredictable, so bring an extra jacket wouldn’t hurt.

Bring enough cash with you. There are no accessible ATMs, especially in Batad.

Everything is on cash basis. The homestays and restaurants don’t accept credit cards so having cash handy will save you from any inconvenience.

Appreciate the beauty around you but leave no trace of trash or rubbish.

Buy locally produced souvenirs as your way of support to the local community.

Respect the local culture. Be considerate of the Ifugao people. Bear in mind that this is their home. This is their way of living, their beliefs, and their ancestor’s heritage.

Truly, Banaue is a paradise in its own way, a place of exceptional happiness and delight. A place where you can be one with nature. A place that encourages you to be fully present.

A place that gives you a glimpse of a rich culture lived centuries ago and has been cultivated by its younger generations. There might have been a bit of a modern touch into it now but Banaue still has its inexplicable charm – one that makes you want to be in the moment.

As they say, it’s nice to be in places that make you realize how small you and your worries or concerns are. Banaue is one of them. It reminds you of how simple and humble life in the mountains is.

Despite the lack of modern facilities, the Ifugao people were able to survive and thrive for centuries. Moreover, it’s such a moving thought to ponder how these world-renowned rice terraces were built with almost nothing but their bare hands.

Imagine the sun as it slowly peaks in between the mountains. Imagine the morning light as it strikes the Banaue Rice Terraces that glimmers in the morning. Imagine the cool breeze as it softly touches your face while walking amidst the luscious rice fields in Batad. Imagine listening to the sound of the river as it flows down the valley.

Imagine the sky as it changes its color from blue to a shade of sea green as you watch the sunset at the top of the mountain overlooking the magical rice terraces of Banaue.

The next time you find yourself dreaming of your next adventure, think no more. Banaue is the place to be. Go ahead and see it for yourself.

The stretch of green mountains that expands its way into the horizon, the warmth of the Ifugao people, the untouched forests, river valleys and waterfalls are more than enough reasons to tease and satisfy your wanderlust.

15 Best IFUGAO TOURIST SPOTS (History, Heritage & Nature)

There has been much debate and questions surrounding the Filipino identity and how we are so different from our neighboring countries. Some claim we are too westernized for comfort that we write with the roman alphabet instead of our indigenous writing, baybayin .

Meanwhile, our neighboring Asian countries still use the writing method of their ancestors. I know that the Filipino culture is an amalgamation of different cultures as diverse as its people; however, it still saddens me that many things that are distinctly Filipino have been left to the past and no longer passed down to the younger generation.

I thought that was just it, a sad reality to accept. Until I went to the mountain region in the Philippines and discovered that a significant trace of Filipino culture is still very much intact and practiced by the Ifugaos. This is one of the reasons Ifugao (and the rest of the Cordillera region ) is an important destination in the Philippines, not only for foreigners but more so for us Filipinos.

Bangaan Rice Terraces Ifugao Banaue

Beautiful… Thanks for the photo Ronald Ruiz!

Ifugao is one of the six provinces of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), the least populous region in the Philippines. It’s a landlocked province with 11 municipalities; its capital city is Lagawe. There are many variations as to the etymology of Ifugao, such as it was derived from the words, i-pugo meaning “people from the hill,” pugaw meaning “the cosmic earth,” and ipugo, a type of grain in local mythology.

Ifugao is among the smallest provinces in the Philippines, with a total land area of 251,778 hectares. The people from this region are called “Ifugaos,” but they are also referred to as “Igorot” or Ygolote, the term used by Spanish conquistadors.

Going to Tappiya Falls Batad Ifugao

Nice hat. LOL!

Ifugao is one of the best destinations in the Philippines for a number of reasons; the landscape is varied and stunning, the people are friendly and welcoming, and the region is rich in culture and history. If you want to explore Ifugao, the Land of the Eighth World Wonder, here are some of the best tourist spots to visit:

1. Batad Rice Terraces

Batad Rice Terraces is one of the five included in the list of Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Batad Amphitheater is a sight to behold, but if you want to see it, prepare for the arduous hike ahead.

When I went there with my friends, we took an 11-hour bus ride to Ifugao, then another hour of a jeep ride to Batad. If you’re up for an adventure, you may do it “taplod” style; you’ll be sitting on the jeep’s roof. It was such an exhilarating experience—it might be scary to some—to feel the wind on your face and enjoy the unobstructed views of the mountains.

Going to Tappiya Falls Batad Ifugao

Star of the trek going to the village.

Batad Banaue Ifugao

Our morning at Batad.

After one hour, we reached the jump-off point, where we had to trek for another hour (it felt like forever, to be honest) over steep and coarse trails that were sometimes slippery. Through our walk, we spotted a few locals sitting in front of their houses, carving wooden objects. Wood carving is part of the Ifugao culture; they make wooden trinkets, furniture, and idols of Ifugao deities, which they use for their own home or sell to tourists.

We were rewarded for all of our labor by the sight of the famed Batad Rice Terraces. It’s one of the most majestic views I have ever seen; it is no wonder many people are willing to take the long trek to get there.

2. Banaue Rice Terraces

The most famous attraction in the Ifugao province is the Banaue Rice Terraces, a man-made rice field carved into the mountains over 2,000 years ago. It is sometimes referred to as the 8th Wonder of the World.

The terraces were built at roughly 4,900 feet above sea level and are sustained by an ancient irrigation system from the rainforests.

Banaue Rice Terraces Banaue Ifugao

Despite its popularity, it’s not included in the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras that were recognized on UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995. It didn’t make it to the list as it received a low score in the integrity criterion of UNESCO due to the numerous modern infrastructures surrounding the terraces.

However, Banaue Rice Terraces remains popular with tourists as it’s easier to visit than other rice terraces in Ifugao.

3. Tappiya Falls

When you visit Batad Rice Terraces, trekking to Tappiya Falls is likely to be your next point of business as it’s just a kilometer away from Batad Amphitheater. The 230-foot waterfall is a popular side trip in Batad, and people go there to appreciate the view, have a picnic, and swim in its cold waters.

Tappiya Falls Batad Ifugao

the majestic Tappiya Falls from afar.

Tappiya Falls Batad Ifugao

Enjoying Tappiya Falls with good friends.

According to our guide, it only takes 30 minutes to get there, but based on our experience, it took us about two hours before we reached the waterfalls. It wasn’t an easy hike by any means, so be prepared to walk over narrow trails and uneven, steep stairs.

With your effort, you will see the popular waterfall in all its glory. Get your swimsuit ready to cool off in the waters but remember to stay in the shallow parts because the closer you get to the waterfalls, the deeper the water gets. It could be dangerous, given how strong the impact the waterfalls make as they cascade down the river.

4. Bangaan Rice Terraces

Aside from Batad, Bangaan Rice Terraces is also included in Cordillera Rice Terraces, UNESCO World Heritage List. What makes this site unique is the existence of “ba-leh,” the traditional Ifugao houses; hence it’s been recognized as a Living Cultural Landscape.

Bangaan Rice Terraces Ifugao

When I went to Banaue in 2015, I didn’t know about Bangaan until one of my travel companions mentioned that we were going there before visiting Batad. A sentiment I shared with most Filipinos, who were only taught about Banaue Rice Terraces back in grade school. It’s a good thing that it was included in our itinerary; otherwise, I would have missed this underrated beauty.

One of the best viewpoints to see Bangaan Rice Terraces is at Batad Junction. Get your camera ready because trust me, you will want to get as many photo souvenirs as you can once you see this attraction.

5. Banaue Ethnic Village and Pine Forest Resort

Banaue Ethnic Village and Pine Forest Resort is a small village resort about 6 kilometers away from the city proper. It was built in the 1990s by the Department of Tourism to preserve and help promote the history as well as the old customs and traditions of the Ifugao people.

Banaue Ethnic Village

The village is open for day trips for a small fee. Visitors may also stay overnight at the Pine Resort (named so as it’s surrounded by pine trees), where they may choose to sleep in traditional Ifugao-styled huts or modern lodging. Other amenities in the village include a restaurant and swimming pools.

6. Hapao Rice Terraces

Hapao Rice Terraces is situated in Hungduan, Ifugao, and is one of the five Cordillera Rice Terraces on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It’s about an hour away from Banaue.

Hapao Rice Terraces

Out of the five terraces, Hapao is the longest. You can easily view Hapao Rice Terraces from the side of the road. The rice fields sit atop stone walls that are 20 feet in height. The place is less touristy, but there are a few accommodations in the area, the most popular of which is the Native Native Village Inn and Restaurant.

You can walk through the rice paddies and enjoy the view of the terraces up close. While you’re there, you may also check out the Hapao river and Bogya hot Springs.

7. Tam-An Village

Tam-An Village

Immerse in the Ifugao culture at Tam-An Village .

Tam-An Village is an Ifugao community frequently visited by tourists. If you want an opportunity to immerse in the Ifugao culture, this is the place to go. You can stay in the native houses, eat local cuisine, meet and interact with the residents, witness or participate in some traditions like cultural dancing, and even enjoy the view of small rice terraces from the village.

8. Kiangan Shrine

Kiangan National Shrine, also known as the Yamashita Shrine, is a war memorial built to commemorate the surrender of General Tomoyuki Yamashita, a Japanese officer to the Allied Forces. The event is said to have led to the end of the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War II. The shrine’s design is modeled after the native Ifugao hut, but it is made with concrete and steel.

Kiangan Shrine

It is one of the most popular attractions in the province, declared a National Landmark by the National Historical Commission.

9. Banaue Museum

Banaue Museum sits in a small two-story building that houses artifacts of the Ifugao people. Most of the collections are owned by an American anthropologist known as the Father of Philippine Anthropology, Henry Otley Beyer.

If you want to get deep into the history of the people of the hill, this is a good place to start your education. You will learn about the tribes from Ifugao, Kalinga, and the Mountain Province and see their weapons used for hunting and tribal wars. Ifugao accessories, traditional clothing, and furniture are also on exhibit.

There are also newspaper clippings and old photographs on display, including the story of the trial and eventual execution of General Tomoyuki Yamashita, a Japanese officer and general in the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II.

10. Balentimol Falls

Balentimol Falls, also known as Tobak Falls, is about 25.6 meters in height. It’s found at the foot of Mt. Napulawan in Hungduan, Ifugao, and is a popular side-trip spot for hikers who climb the said mountain.

Balentimol Falls

It’s one of the best off-the-beaten-path destinations in Ifugao but is frequented by the locals. To get there, take a tricycle from either Hapao or Poblacion, followed by a hike that takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

11. Hiwang Village

Hiwang village

The community is warm and accommodating, eager to share their culture and knowledge of history with the visitors. You will find numerous artworks made of wood around the place, including carved figures of “bulul” known as the rice deity or rice guardians from Ifugao mythology.

12. Bogyah Hot Spring

Bogyah Hot Spring is a small natural swimming pool in Hingduan, Ifugao. It’s a pretty popular spot for the locals who frequent the pools for picnics and to benefit from the alleged healing properties of the water.

You need to hike for about 40 minutes to an hour to get to the hot springs, past the view of mountains, rice fields, and Hapao River. Don’t worry because it will be well worth the effort, especially when the weariness melts away as soon as your body hits the therapeutic, warm water.

13. Mayoyao Rice Terraces

Mayoyao Rice Terraces is located in Mayoyao municipality in Ifugao. It’s included in the five Cordillera Rice Terraces on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It’s less touristy and least visited compared with other rice terraces in the province; however, its charm rivals its counterparts.

Mayoyao Rice Terraces

Mayoya is not easily accessible to tourists; you need to travel over three hours (or more, depending on the bus schedule) to get there from Banaue. But the beautiful landscapes and the sweeping view of well-preserved, unexploited rice terraces merit the extra time and effort.

14. Ambuwaya Lake

Ambuwaya Lake

Small, placid, and non-touristy, Ambuwaya Lake is situated in a modest village in the municipality of Kiangan. It’s about 2.6km away from Poblacion or the city center and a favorite spot for swimming and fishing by some locals. It is named “ambuwayya” because, according to some people, a crocodile used to inhabit the lake.

The tragic story of the Legend of the Ambuwaya Lake is one of the most popular Ifugao folklore in records.

15. Bintakan and Nah-toban Caves

If you’re up for some spelunking adventure, you may visit Bintakan and Nah-toban caves. Both caves are eco-tourism sites that serve as tourist attractions for the town’s inhabitants.

The caves are located in Lagawe, Ifugao, and are often explored together in a single trip. Bintakan is near the Ibunao river and is known for its impressive limestone formation. Nah-toban is located in Boliwong and is larger than Bintakan. It has three caves inside; Lagalag, Magyan, and Bong Bong.

Start your Ifugao escapade from Banaue, home of the famous Banaue Rice Terraces.

The Batad Rice Terraces is one of the top tourist spots in Ifugao. The majestic amphitheater-shaped rice terraces carved on the mountains is proof of the engineering and architectural skills of the Ifugao ancestors. Batad Rice Terraces is part of the famous Rice Terraces of the Cordillera, the 8th Wonder of the Ancient World, and listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ifugao ancestors used big boulders from the river at the foot of the mountain to build the rice paddies. Isn’t it a wonder?

How to get there? From Banaue, take a jeepney up to Saddle Point. From Saddle Point, hike for less than an hour to reach Batad. Head to Banaue tourist information center for current advice.

From Batad, hike for almost an hour to reach Tappiyah Falls. If you’re not used to trekking on the mountain, it’s better to bring with you a cane or a stick to support you from falling down the rice paddies. Falling from 75 meters high, the Tappiyah Falls welcomes visitors to enjoy its cold water. It is better to go there during summer, from March to May, because the water is unbearable during colder months.

One of the must-see Banaue tourist spots is the Banaue Viewpoint. It offers visitors the best glance at the Banaue Rice Terraces and there are some shops to buy souvenirs also. Just like the Batad Rice Terraces, the Banaue Rice Terraces are carved by hands more than 2000 years ago by Ifugao ancestors. Stopping by Banaue ethnic village is also recommended.

Of the five rice terraces of Ifugao included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bangaan Rice Terraces is the most preserved but most accessible. Alternatively, Nagacadan rice terraces come highly recommended also.

One great thing about Hapao Rice Terraces is you can experience walking on the rice paddies and see the farmers working on the fields during planting season. It is one of the great places for farmers to watch!

Bogyah Hot Spring is a great place to relax after visiting the different tourist spots of Banaue and Hungduan. From Hapao, hike for 45 minutes to reach the hot spring and enjoy a relaxing sulfur bath to soothe your tired body and mind.

Adjacent to the hot spring is the cold water of Hungduan River, where you can enjoy a cold bath.

The local tourism office built a mini pool, which can accommodate ten people, to contain the water coming from the spring.

This list of Ifugao tourist spots wouldn’t be complete without Mt. Napulawan. This mountain got its name from the Tuwali word “pulaw” which means “white” because fogs and clouds hover over its mountaintop every day.

Mt. Napulawan is a mysterious mountain rising 2, 643 meters above sea level. History says that General Tomoyuki Yamashita sought refuge in this mountain during World War II.

Hiking to the peak of this mountain may take 2 to 3 days which is one of the tiring but fun outdoor activities in the area. If need, you can seek help from the Tourism Office of Hungduan to make your trip seamless!

Your trip to the town of Hungduan will not be complete without visiting Balentimol Falls situated at the foot of Mt. Napulawan. Dropping by Balentimol Falls is one the best destination for hikers looking for refreshing waterfalls to massage their tired bodies after exploring Mt. Napulawan.

The vast mountain of Hungduan is the source of another waterfall, the Buyukan Falls. Going to the falls can be risky because of the trail; that’s why they only recommend expert hikers to take the three-hour hike to reach the falls.

The best time to visit Buyukam Falls is during summer because leeches swarm the falls during the rainy season.

Another mountain to explore in the town of Hungduan is Mt. Anapowan. It is a perfect camping site for hikers and nature-lovers. From the summit of Mt. Anapowan, one can see the municipalities of Kiangan and Lagawe and the green mountains, pine forest, and terraces of Hungduan.

Bintakan and Nahtoban Caves are located in the province’s capital town of Lagawe. You can take a tricycle from the town proper and hike for about 20 minutes to reach the cave’s entrance.

This three-room cave overlooks the Ibulao River from the entrance. Inside the cave are different forms and shapes of stalagmites and stalactites formed from dripping waters.

On the other hand, Nahtoban Cave is 4 kilometers away from the town proper and has larger chambers than Bintakan Cave.

Kiangan Shrine was erected to commemorate the surrender of General Tomoyuki Yamashita during the Second World War.

It is a symbol of the bravery of Filipino veteran soldiers. Every 2nd of September, the provincial government of Ifugao hosts a program at the shrine to honor these veteran soldiers. The shrine is shaped like an Ifugao native house, and when you reach the top, you can see the grand mountains of Ifugao.

Inside the compound of the Kiangan Shrine is the Ifugao Museum. The museum houses different artifacts of the Ifugao people and their ancestors.

Upon entering the museum, visitors are welcomed by a recording of the Ifugao gong and a video clip of essential events in the Ifugao history and culture.

The Open Museum is part of Nagacadan village in Kiangan, where tourists can personally experience planting rice in the terraces, listen to century-old songs and chants, and examine carefully old native houses and granaries. Visitors can walk on rice paddies, usually a meter high, and can have a short conversation with local villagers about their way of living also.

Near the rice terraces is the Imbuliklik Rock, which measures 22 meters high. If you’re into mountain climbing, you may try going to the top of this enormous rock which makes it one of the fun ifugao tourist spots.

Before leaving Kiangan, head to Ambuaya Lake at Barangay Ambabag. It is a perfect place for picnics. Green vegetation surrounds the area making it a serene place to relax and enjoy nature. Legend says that a boy and his grandmother made fun of a leech, which put the curse to the place and made it into a lake.

To reach this cave, one needs to hike for almost two hours from the foot of the mountain to the cave’s entrance. At the cave’s entrance, you need to go down using a ladder of more than 50 steps. It takes two to three hours to navigate through the crevices of the cave. Stalactites and stalagmites in different shapes are present everywhere.

On the other hand, the most challenging part of exploring the cave is going through narrow and slippery spaces. So, prepare yourself to be wet and muddy.

Near the end of the cave is a cold stream, and when you reach the end, you’ll be welcomed by a waterfall with clear water inviting your tired body to take a cold bath.

Himmifoy Falls, located in Lamut, Ifugao, is one local tourist attraction to be discovered. The word “himmifoy” is an Ayangan term, which means “gutter.”

One can reach Himmifoy Falls through an hour and a half hiking from the national road. The distinctive feature of this falls is its heart-shaped basin of cold water.

Matangili Rock Formation is located at Lamut, Ifugao. It takes a 2-3 hours hike to reach the summit and enjoy the breath-taking view of the green valley below.

One thing hikers expect when reaching Matangili Rock is the sea of clouds surrounding the area. However, you need to be early to experience this one-of-a-kind experience.

Dar-awan Viewpoint at Lamut, Ifugao offers a beautiful view of the Ibulao River flowing beside the green cornfields of Hapid village.

The panoramic view of the valley, along with the river, is ideal for picture-taking and picnics, making it one of the popular tourist attractions. To go there, take a tricycle from Lamut town proper and savor a 20-minute ride along rolling hills.

The Mayoyao Rice Terraces, as a whole, is also listed as World Heritage Site and as majestic as the other rice terraces in the province.

Rice terraces are present in almost all parts of Mayoyao, like in Chumang, Chaya, Banhar, Mapawoy, Bongan, and Buninan.

Tenogtog falls in Mayoyao, Ifugao is one must-see tourist destination. The word “tenogtog” means “chopped.” Before, hunters chop the meat of their prey like wild pigs or deers near the falls.

Unlike Tappiyah Falls, Tenogtog Falls, which is a 20-minute hike from the town proper, has three tiers of falls with small basins in between them.

The Apfo’or Burial Tombs were made with large stones like paddies of the rice terraces. These dome-shaped graves, which are found only in Mayoyao, are the tombs of the bones of ancient warriors and wealthy Ifugaos before.

Another mountain to climb in Ifugao is Mt. Nagchayan in Mayoyao. It is 1, 445 above sea level and can be an excellent destination for hikers and mountain climbers.

On top of Mt. Nagchayan, you can view the mountain ranges dotted with rice terraces.

Another waterfall to discover in Mayoyao is Pikhu Falls. It has no basin at its base because of big boulders, but one can lay down on its cascading water and savor the soothing fall.

While laying down enjoying the freshwater, let your eyes feast on the surrounding green landscapes and vegetation.

25. 1000 Steps

Aside from the majestic mountains of Ifugao to climb, there is also the 1,000 steps in Alfonso Lista to ascend. Upon reaching the last step, one can have a great view of the Magat Dam, Asia’s largest dam.

Also, keep your eyes peel for the Ifugao festival which can be a great way to understand the local culture. There you have it, the 25 must-see Ifugao tourist spots in the Philippines!

If you’re a nature-lover and looking for an adventure in the mountains, what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and travel to Ifugao!

Mayoyao rice terraces.

Recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage inscription, Mayoyao is one of the five Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras. It is one of the top tourist attractions in Ifugao Province.

The view of the native houses and stonewalled rice terraces is very picturesque. It doesn’t seem to end; its stretch and size seem to look like it is never-ending. Just enjoy and watch the water cascade as you swim around the pool.

Still remains to be the most famous rice terraces in the world; Banaue Rice Terraces is a national cultural treasure; just like the other rice terraces. Our ancestors were able to make such a magnificent work that soars at 1,500 meters high; all that they did by hand. The great thing about this place is despite how many years old it already it is, it remains to be breathtaking and majestic. It is a perfect mixture of something manmade but has molded into the mountains over time that it looks natural.

Hungduan Rice Terraces

Spectacular, it is the best way to describe the beauty of Hunduan Rice Terraces. All these rice terraces are included in the best tourist spots in Ifugao because clearly, it showcases that farming can have beauty in it, too. It isn’t just some means of survival, but it is also a way of life.

Banaue & Batad Rice Terraces in Ifugao Province

Dea Mariano

Ifugao Province is home to several rice terraces proclaimed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. This living cultural landscape is a reflection of resourcefulness, creativity, and passion of our native Ifugao people. That’s why a visit to this province in the north is a kind of trip anyone should make at least once in their lifetime.

These rice terraces were carved into the mountains with minimal equipment by the indigenous people. Who said you can only plant rice crops on plains and valleys? Seems like our indigenous Ifugao people hate to make excuses!

Banaue Rice Terraces

The Banaue Rice Terraces, or Hagdan-hagdang Palayan ng Banawe in Filipino ,  are the rice terraces particularly close to Banaue downtown and the ones printed on the twenty peso banknote. They are easily accessible and surrounded by concrete structures, causing it to score low in the UNESCO inscription. The presence of too many modern structures makes it less appealing. To be honest, the rawness of the place seems to be fading.

Although not included in the UNESCO list, the Banaue Rice Terraces were declared as National Cultural Treasure by the Philippine government. How can they not? No matter how many modern structures are present, these rice terraces are over 2000 years old, built by the ancestors of indigenous Ifugao mainly by hand, and passed on from generation to generation — that alone is amazing!

banaue ifugao tourist spot

However, there’s another problem. Most of the younger generation of Ifugaos do not find farming interesting and the older ones are now becoming weak. As a result, the “steps” which require constant care are now becoming more prone to erosion.

Since the Banaue Rice Terraces became a main tourist attraction, the locals, including the youth became more drawn into the hospitality industry as it seemed to be more lucrative. We cannot blame people who need to support their families. We can only hope that the government and the local people would unite to keep this cultural wonder alive.

As you would notice in the photos, a large portion of the terraces are empty of rice crops. I don’t know exactly why, but it’s either it’s past the harvest season or they really stopped farming already.

Now that the pandemic has hugely affected the tourism industry, it somehow caused us to give farming the attention it deserves. I hope that our beloved Ifugaos, both the government and the people, will be encouraged to utilize this cultural wonder that they richly inherited from their ancestors.

banaue ifugao tourist spot

Since the terraces are located approximately 1,500 metres above sea level, the temperature is relatively lower (about 20°C in average) even during summer months. That’s why apart from Baguio City , it became another favorite summer destination for people to escape the scorching summer heat.

Batad Rice Terraces

Located in Brangay Batad in the municipality of Banaue is the famed rice terraces that resemble an enormous amphitheater — the Batad Rice Terraces. It is one of the 5 clusters of rice terraces listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . This tiny village is a paradise tucked away from modern civilization and only those with wondering hearts are willing to take the path to discover it.

Batad is a remote village with around 1,500 people. It is said to be home to the most well-preserved rice terraces in the Cordillera region. The rice paddies in Batad are built with stone walls which is why it looks more neat and stable compared to those with mud walls.

banaue ifugao tourist spot

Apart from the amphitheater-like rice terraces with a village at its base and stunning landscape, Batad also has a nearby waterfall that offers a natural swimming pool: the Tappiya Waterfalls. The trek to the falls may take 2 to 3 hours depending on your pace. This waterfall is found at the bottom of the terraces where you can swim and marvel at its beautiful scenery.

Batad can be reached by a 10-km jeepney ride from Banaue town proper to the saddle, and about a 15-minute hike down into the village through mountain trails. There’s no transportation that can take you directly to the village, but a little hike allows you to really appreciate the scenery along the way and be one with nature.

Must Visit Tourist Spots in Banuae Ifugao, Philippines

If there is one place I would recommend anyone to visit in the north of the Philippines, it would be Banaue. With its culture and tradition, it is impossible not to be amazed and fall in love with the place; especially when you are surrounded by the Banaue Rice Terraces, which are considered a Unesco World Heritage Site.

On our second visit to Banaue, we wanted to make sure we stayed longer and visit as many places as possible. We were very excited because we really missed the place and we had some good memories of our first visit.

Manila – Banaue – Sagada V.V. by BUS?

When going to Banaue, expect long hours of a bus ride. You are talking about 8 hours of travel. If you are going to Sagada, it’s even longer. But what’s nice is that you can relax and catch up on your sleep while on the bus. One bus company I know that travels to these places is the CODA LINES.

Hiwang Native Village

There are so many places to stay in Banaue. But upon searching, we ended up staying at Hiwang Native VIllage . The native village is located a few minutes away from the main town. But it didn’t really bother us because the view from Hiwang will leave everyone speechless!

We stayed in a native Ifugao hut overlooking the rice terraces. It was peaceful and cold. We loved this place! The huts are also quite far from each other, so you have your own privacy as well with a CR and shower for your exclusive use a few steps away from the hut.

We stayed in one of the topmost huts which provided a stunning view, but expect a climb and many steps!  But the steps are all laid out in a naturally landscaped garden which makes many steps a pleasant journey.

Banaue Ifugao Tourist Destinations

For 3 days two nights. We really wanted to maximize our itinerary. We arrived early morning in Banaue; literally, it was around 5 am. It was still dark and cold. I loved it! We asked Hiwang Native Village to organize a pick-up van for us at the Tourist Center. That’s where the bus stops too.

If you haven’t arranged a pick-up, do not worry because there are so many tricycles readily available. We immediately rented a van to take us to some places around Banaue organized by the Hiwang Native Village and coordinated by the Banaue Tourism Center.

Banaue Rice Terraces View Deck Areas

There are 3 viewing deck areas that your tour guide will bring you. I totally forgot some of them.

My apologies for that but some of them appear on our Php 20 and 1000 banknotes. But these places are great to get a nice glimpse of the Rice Terraces. You will also find many souvenir shops here, so no worries about bringing pasalubong to your friends or family.

Things to see around Hungduan Ifugao

After visiting the viewpoints around Banaue, we then headed to Hungduan Ifugao. It’s approximately a 20 min ride from the main town. Once you get there, you have to register at the Tourist Information and Assistance Center.

Environmental Fee: Php 70.00

Hapao Rice Terraces

After your registration, you will then go to the drop-off point where a local guide will be allocated to your group and accompany you on your hike along the terraces.

The hike takes you from the viewpoint along the walls of the terraces to the Hapao Hot Spring. It was so much fun but do be aware to walk cautiously as the walls are narrow and the drop quite high. It was beautiful, especially seeing them all lush and green with newly planted rice.

Bogya / Hapao Hot Spring

banaue ifugao tourist spot

One of the main tourist spots here, aside from the rice terraces, is the hot spring. It is located next to a river with freezing water. I am not sure where the volcano is, but you could really smell the sulfur in the water. It was relaxing! After the hot swim, we went to the main river to call off and back to the hot spring again. It’s like a hot and cold bath!

Hungduan Heritage Village

banaue ifugao tourist spot

After Bogya Hot Spring, we walked back to a Heritage village where the local people live. It was nice because the people were very friendly and some even speak English very well. It was special and an interesting trek back to our van!

Banaue Hotel

banaue ifugao tourist spot

After an uneventful short trip back from the Hapao Rice Terraces, we headed back to the town proper and decided to walk a few meters towards Banaue Hotel for an appetizing meal while overlooking rice terraces. I find it very romantic, especially with the view. After a pleasant meal, we took a tricycle towards our resort.

Batad Rice Terraces

banaue ifugao tourist spot

On the next day, we woke up early and went to visit Batad Rice Terraces. You will have to travel from the town proper for at least an hour to get to Batad. You can take a Jeepney, but it may take a while. So it’s better to hire a vehicle to take you there. It’s best to coordinate with the Tourism Center.

banaue ifugao tourist spot

When we arrived at the Batad Rice Terraces, we were so amazed at how beautiful it is. I couldn’t believe it myself that everything is man-made. There are so many restaurants offering a nice view of the rice terraces. So slow down and take some time to absorb everything. It’s quite overwhelming, actually!  The hike along the terrace walls here is even more challenging for those with a fear of heights as the drop is higher than the terraces at Hapao, but it is all part of the adventure!

Tappiya Falls

tapiya falls banaue

What’s more interesting in Batad Rice Terraces is the Tappiya Falls. With your local tour guide, you will actually be walking along the rice terraces going to the falls. That was exciting because walking around. You can get a different view of the terraces. Just prepare yourself for a long walk because going to the falls could be challenging for some. Make sure you have water with you, and pause if you need to – especially on the long climb back to the terraces.

tapiya falls banaue

After a few minutes of walking, we finally caught a glimpse of the falls. It was amazing! And after the long walk, I couldn’t think of anything but to have a dip in the freezing water. Yes, the water was really cold, but it was refreshing! It’s worth it! I think this is one of the most beautiful waterfalls you could find in the Philippines.

Other tourist spots to visit Banaue

After having lunch in Batad, our tour guide took us to different rice terraces around Banaue, such as the Bayninag Rice Terraces, Bangaan Village Rice Terraces, and the Ducligan Snake River. All of these places can be seen from the road above.

banaue ifugao tourist spot

What I like about these terraces was how each one is actually different from the other. It was also interesting to find villages in the middle of the terraces. The farthest was the Ducligan Snake River, where the river goes around in the shape of a snake. But for me, this is more of a lifeline providing water to the terraces and other crops around the area.

Bronzesmith at Barangay Bokos

banaue ifugao tourist spot

On our last day, we checked out early and decided to stay in the town proper. Based on the tourist map, there is bronzesmith around the area. I was really intrigued, so I asked my friends to take a walk to the bronzesmith and maybe buy some souvenires.

banaue ifugao tourist spot

With Google Walk and asking local people, we ended up at the home of one of the bronze smiths and, because of their hospitality, had a unique experience. When we arrived at the house, we couldn’t find any bronzesmith and this lady came out of the house, her name is Elsa. We told her that we were looking for the Bronzesmith, and she said, yes, this is the place, but her husband, who was doing it, was taking a break because he was not feeling well.

banaue ifugao tourist spot

She was so sweet because she said that she still has stocks that she could sell, and she even showed us how they make it. They were so accommodating that they even invited us inside their home and had a chat. They even let us tried their homemade Basi (Rice wine), and that was delicious!

banaue ifugao tourist spot

Before we left, they even gave us Banaue Rice that came from their terraces. They were so hospitable, and it made our trip to Banaue even more memorable! Sometimes, aside from the destination, it’s the people of the community that makes a trip, a trip to remember!

banaue ifugao tourist spot

Banaue definitely has a special place in our hearts. It makes you slow down from the fast-paced life in the Metro, and I like that. The place is beautiful, the people and the culture are amazing, and it’s the experience that is difficult to let go of! Banaue, Ifugao is definitely a place to visit and a place to be protected! In the first place, it’s a National Heritage, and I am very proud of that!
