John Payne became the frontman of the supergroup ASIA in 1992 at the invitation of keyboardist Geoff Downes, replacing vocalist/bassist John Wetton. Progressive rock band ASIA extensively toured the world for the next 14 years performing new classics and old favorites. With John Payne fronting the band, ASIA released 8 stunning studio albums and several live recordings. In 2006, Geoff Downes left the band to reform the 1982 lineup for their 25th anniversary.

On the 9th of May 2007, John Payne, Geoff Downes, John Wetton, Carl Palmer and Steve Howe contractually agreed that John Payne would continue his 14 year legacy with ASIA as “ASIA Featuring John Payne”. ASIA Featuring John Payne has been touring in North America since 2008.

Asia featuring John Payne announce plans for double anniversary tour

Planned Asia featuring John Payne tour will showcase the 1982 Asia and 1992 Aqua albums

Asia featuring John Payne have announced plans for a double anniversary tour to celebrate the original band's 1982 debut album, as well as 1992's Aqua , the first album from the line-up that featured Payne, along with keyboard player Geoff Downes and briefly Steve Howe and Carl Palmer.

“This is going to be very nostalgic for me, I haven’t played some of these songs in 30 years and I’m extremely excited to do this tour with our band," says Payne. "We want the shows to sound as close to the original recordings as possible."

Founding Asia members Carl Palmer and Geoff Downes recently announced plans for a 40th anniversary tour to celebrate the release of the Asia album, with a line-up that will feature current Yes bassist  Billy Sherwood  and former Keith Emerson guitarist Marc Bonilla.

Dates for both tours have yet to be announced.

Welcome to episode # 53 of the Rock Interview Series. For this feature, I have -John Payne vocalist/bass player/songwriter of the prog-rock band ASIA featuring John Payne AS MY GUEST.

John Payne joined the multi-platinum band ASIA in 1992, after original member John Wetton left the band. Payne was in ASIA for the next 14 years and during that time recorded eight amazing records with the band.

In 2007, shortly after ASIA reunited with the original members, Payne was given the right to continue under the name ASIA featuring John Payne.

ASIA featuring John Payne is currently on the “Double Anniversary Tour” to commemorate the original band’s 1982 debut album, and Payne first record with ASIA the 1992 “Aqua” release.

What follows is an exclusive interview with John Payne in which he discusses his upcoming tour dates, past history and his plans for the future.
