Time

The Northern Territory is the place to delve deeper into Indigenous Australia with an impressive number of Aboriginal tours available.

With so many options available, we know it can be hard to choose one of the many Northern Territory Aboriginal cultural tours. Which is why we’ve pulled together our top picks of the best cultural experiences to further your understanding of Australia’s first peoples.

Saltwater Cultural Tours Darwin

You don’t have to head into the wilds of the Northern Territory to experience a great Aboriginal cultural tour, with Larrakia descendent and guide Trent Lee catering to Darwin -based visitors.

Whether you want to try the art of lighting a fire the traditional way, learn how to play the didgeridoo or simply sit back and enjoy storytelling, Saltwater Cultural Tours Darwin has you covered with its ‘3-Hour Tour’.

If you’re not short on time, the company also runs a one-day ‘Out on Country’ tour that introduces tourists to the local language and cultural artefacts.

Why we love it: Being based in Darwin, the 3-Hour Tour is a super simple option for travellers on a quick city break.

Top Didj Cultural Experience

Hear what it’s like growing up in ‘the bush’ and learn the art of rarrk painting (cross-hatch) during the twice-daily Top Didj Cultural Experience , in Katherine (May to October).

You’ll spend around 2.5 hours with Top End Aboriginal artist Manuel Pamkal, who, along with the painting, will also teach holidaymakers how to throw a spear and light a fire with only two sticks. Afterwards, it’s worth having a look through the art gallery to pick up a souvenir or two.

Why we love it: The tours are suitable for children as young as three, so you can start their Indigenous Australia education early. How cool is that?

Karrke Aboriginal Cultural Experience & Tours

Promising more than your typical Aboriginal tour, Karrke offers an in-depth experience that focuses on bush tucker and bush medicine.

The one-hour Aboriginal Cultural Tour from Watarrka National Park (February to October) will educate visitors on the traditions of the Luritja and Pertame (Southern Aranda) people, particularly when it comes to seasonal food such as edible tree and grass seeds.

Why we love it: There are two reasons – it’s based out of the majestic Watarrka National Park, and you will learn all about the witchetty grub, and may even get to taste one.

SEIT Outback Australia

For an Uluru experience like no other, join SEIT Outback Australia for tours from the sprawling Ayers Rock Resort .

The tours educate visitors on the history of the ‘big red rock’, the fight for land rights around it, Creation stories and rock art – and that’s just the Uluru excursions. The SEIT Patji – A True Aboriginal Experience tour is a seven-hour cultural tour open to anyone aged five and above.

Why we love it: It will open your eyes to what the region was like before Uluru became one of Australia’s most iconic landmarks.

Maruku Arts

Located at Uluru, Maruku Arts is owned and operated by A n angu, with some 900 Aboriginal artists from more than 20 remote communities in the Central and Western Deserts represented in the not-for-profit collective.

The centre runs tours and workshops, and you can take part in a 90-minute dot painting experience under the tutelage of a local artist, and try your hand at panu  (woodcarving).

There is also the opportunity to walk with an artist to Mutitjulu Waterhole, at the base of Uluru, and hear about the connection between art and the land, before taking part in a painting session.

Why we love it: One, you’ll be taught some of the local language, and two, it’s great value for tourists, with adult tickets costing only $72. Did we mention there are interpreters, too?

Pudakul Aboriginal Cultural Tours

This Aboriginal-owned-and-operated family business, based on the Adelaide River Flood Plains on Limilngan-Wulna Land, offers a number of cultural tours , including a Kakadu Rock Art day tour taking in the famed Noulangie Rock Art.

The tour starts with a ‘Welcome to Country’ at Pudakul, includes a stop at Cahills Crossing to see the resident saltwater crocodiles (keep your distance), and ends with a healthy lunch before returning to Darwin.

Why we love it: There is also a two-hour Aboriginal Tour that’s a great introduction to local customs, and damper is served before the tour kicks off, so don’t be late.

Kakadu Cultural Tours

Owned and managed by traditional owners, Kakadu Cultural Tours showcases the best Aboriginal experiences in the national park.

We love the Guluyambi Cultural Cruise (May to November) along the beautiful East Alligator River. Passengers learn about ancient mythology, the flora and fauna (no doubt the local crocs), and bush survival skills over one hour and 45 minutes.

Why we love it: There is also the Arnhemlander Cultural & Heritage 4WD Tour, which takes tourists into northern Kakadu and remote Arnhem Land.

Ayal Aboriginal Tours

Join the half-day Kakadu Historical Buffalo Camp and Wildlife Tour to escape the crowds and see a different side of Kakadu National Park. Go off the beaten track on a walk around Gabarlgu Billabong and the South Alligator mangrove forest as you learn about wildlife, bush foods and the cultural connection to the land.

Ayal Aboriginal Tours also runs half-day private charter (4WD or 2WD bus) wetlands, rock art and wildlife tours. Check in with the company for up-to-date departures.

Why we love it: The history of buffalo hunting isn’t something you hear a lot of when visiting the park, and that’s why we rate the camp tour.

  • You’ll take away a deeper understanding of Aboriginal life, its relationship to country and its place in modern society.
  • You’ll be enriched by this unforgettable experience.

Litchfield Tour Itinerary

Pick up and return.

We’ll pick you up for your Litchfield tour in a comfortable, air-conditioned tour vehicle from your Darwin accommodation between 7:15 and 7:30 am (a bit later for suburban and outlying accommodation). We’ll return you to Darwin about 4:30 pm.

Finniss River Crossing

Back roads from Darwin take us to the Finniss River and beyond, into Tess’s family’s country. We’ll stretch our legs at this shady riverside stop and discover the resources available from this riverine environment. *   During our tropical summer, from about December to May, road authorities often close the back road into Litchfield due to flooding at this crossing. When this occurs we will enter and leave Litchfield by the main road through the pretty town of Batchelor.

Bush resources

At various places we’ll demonstrate seasonal bush resources used by local Aboriginal people for thousands of years, and describe the relationship of Litchfield’s landscape features to local indigenous culture.

Termite mounds

You’ll learn about the many termites, primary herbivores of the Northern Territory, and the huge housing complexes they build. You’ll be amazed at how indigenous people use these industrious creatures and their homes.

Bamboo Creek Tin Mine

We know the Bamboo Creek* area as Marchinbar, an important place for our people. You’ll find out why and learn about the pioneering efforts of our ancestors at the old tin mine here.

* During our tropical summer, from about December to May, road authorities close the road into Bamboo Creek Tin Mine due to flooding. When this occurs we will instead visit Tolmer Falls, which is spectacular at this time of year.

Tolmer Falls

During our tropical summer we’ll take a short walk through Litchfield’s stone country to Tolmer Falls. The stone country comes alive at this time of year with a profusion of life and a gushing of water into Tolmer’s deep chasms.

* During the dry season the stone country around Tolmer Falls is very dry and hot. At this time of year we’ll instead visit the heritage-listed Bamboo Creek Tine Mine.

Woolaning Spring

You’ll be exclusive visitors to Tess’s family’s private land at beautiful Woolaning Spring*. We’ll enjoy a morning tea stop here in our little patch of rainforest by a crystal clear stream. You can take a therapeutic dip in the warm spring waters or explore the remains of Tess’s family’s sawmill camp.

* During our tropical summer, from about December to May, the track into Woolaning Spring is often too boggy to use. When this occurs we will have morning tea at a more accessible spot.

We’ll present a freshly cooked lunch of wildcaught barramundi, crocodile and kangaroo, in beautiful surroundings.

Wangi Falls

You’ll visit iconic Wangi Falls, its plunge pool a popular dry season swimming spot and a special place for indigenous women. Cool off with a swim* or explore the nearby lush rainforest, home to a variety of birds and restless fruit bats. For the keen there may be an opportunity for a more strenuous walk around and over the falls.

*   When water levels rise to a pre-determined point during our tropical summer, from about December to May, park authorities close the Wangi Falls plunge pool to swimming due to strong currents and the potential for saltwater crocodiles to enter the plunge pool. Viewing the falls, however, and doing the walk around and over them, is safe and especially spectacular at this time of year.

Florence Falls

You’ll see stunning Florence Falls from the plateau-top lookout, a short walk from the car park. Keen swimmers can tackle the 135 stairs that lead down to the clear, refreshing waters of Florence’s stone-walled gorge and plunge pool. Easier walks allow swimming too, in the warmer waters above Florence Falls.

Back to Darwin

We’ll settle into the comfort of our air-conditioned vehicle to return to your hotel in time to catch the sunset over Darwin Harbour, markets and nightlife.

* For a really special way to cap off the day, package up and learn about the different traditions of saltwater Aboriginal people, the Larrakia, on a Sunset Dreaming cruise run by Sea Darwin on Darwin Harbour.

Day 1. Welcome to Darwin

Get to know the steamy NT capital at your own pace – you’ll fast find that the characters here are almost as colourful as the sunsets. You’ll enjoy the latter over drinks and nibbles with your Travel Director and fellow adventure-seekers. A tasty entrée to your 11-day odyssey. Hotel: Vibe Hotel Darwin Waterfront

Day 2. Darwin

Today is about getting your Darwin bearings on a city tour revealing the events that have shaped the city over the decades, from wars to natural disasters. You’ll be a Darwin expert after visiting attractions like East Point Military Reserve and the Darwin Museum. The afternoon is at your leisure. If you’re at a loss for ideas, we can point you in the direction of the Royal Flying Doctor Service Tourist Facility, perhaps, or the Mindil Beach Sunset Market, loaded with 200+ stalls. Grab a bite and watch the day end with your feet in the sand. Hotel: Vibe Hotel Darwin Waterfront. Included Meals: Breakfast

Day 3. Darwin – Kakadu

Aboriginal culture is strong in this part of Australia, and its kept alive by Traditional Landowners on this morning’s tour. 100% Aboriginal owned and operated family business, Pudakul offers cultural and nature-based cultural experiences from the Adelaide River Flood Plains on Aboriginal owned land Limilngan-Wulna. On this MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience, dive deep into First Nations heritage, highlighting art, music and bush tucker. Your next deep dive is into the heart of Kakadu, a World Heritage listed national park that is one of Australia’s most important living ecosystems. Hotel: Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel. Included Meals: Dinner, Breakfast

Day 4. Kakadu National Park

Kakadu is vast, spanning almost 20,000 square kilometres. The best way to gain appreciation for just how immense it really is from the air on an optional (but highly recommended) morning flight. Now that you have your bearings, take to the land to discover ancient Aboriginal rock art and cruise the wildlife-packed Yellow Water Billabong to search for enormous saltwater crocs – your eagle-eyed guide knows where to look. End your Kakadu tour on a high, watching the sun set over floodplains. Hotel: Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel. Included Meals: Breakfast

Day 5. Kakadu – Katherine

From one glorious national park to another… today’s backdrop is the end-of-Earth escarpments of Nitmiluk National Park, carved by rivers millions of years ago. Cruising through Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge is a humbling experience even before you know the region’s history. Small wonder freshwater crocs and all manner of birds call the cavern home. Hotel: Contour Hotel Katherine. Included Meals: Dinner, Breakfast

Day 6. Katherine – Tennant Creek

If the Elsey Homestead looks familiar, that’s because it starred in the 1982 Aussie drama We of the Never Never. Today it’s better known for its Mataranka thermal hot springs. Pop on your swimsuit and have a soothing soak, the magical setting surrounded by palms. The only thing more refreshing is a cold beverage at the Daly Waters Pub, self-declared as Australia’s ‘original outback pub’. You can imagine the kind of swagger the locals bring. Visitors are encouraged to leave their mark as well; a memento, perhaps, or autograph on the walls. Hotel: Bluestone Motor Inn. Included Meals: Dinner, Breakfast

Day 7. Tennant Creek – Alice Springs

The Stuart Highway is long (2,700 kilometres), very straight and very flat. Which makes the appearance of Karlu Karlu (Devils Marbles) on the horizon all the more dramatic. These massive granite boulders pock the countryside. But they’re not just a pretty sight – they’re a sacred place for the Aboriginal community, created by the fossilised eggs of the Rainbow Serpent. Get the lay of the land atop Alice Springs’ Anzac Hill. From this vantage, the East and West MacDonnell Ranges appear to stretch to the horizon. Hotel: Doubletree by Hilton Alice Springs. Included Meals: Breakfast

Day 8. Alice Springs

Sleep in, take to the skies in a hot-air balloon as the desert awakens, explore the West Macs on a guided tour or visit the Alice Springs Desert Park. It’s home to a vast range of plants and wildlife native to the area. You can really experience the beauty and diversity of this incredible landscape. The Arrernte people, traditional owners of the park, are also on hand to share their local wisdom and knowledge. this morning is yours to spend as you choose. Save some energy for this afternoon’s visit to the historic Telegraph Station – the reason the town was formed – and School of the Air, to gain an insight into outback and remote learning. Hotel: Doubletree by Hilton Alice Springs. Included Meals: Breakfast

Day 9. Alice Springs – Uluru

From the moment you wake up until the last of day disappears, spiritual Aboriginal culture is all around on today’s Northern Territory tour. Get set to be in awe over Dreamtime stories about the creation of Uluru, the world’s largest monolith. It’s particularly pretty at sunset when the fading rays change the desert’s colour with every sip of your sparkling wine. Hotel: Outback Hotel & Lodge. Included Meals: Breakfast

Day 10. Uluru

There aren’t many things worth getting up in the dark for. Sunrise over Uluru is one. It’s a magical time of day, the shifting light casting the countryside aglow. Exploring the base of ‘the Rock’ on an Uluru tour, you’ll begin to understand why this part of the country is so special to the Anangu people, who have called the region home for millennia. Go at your own pace this afternoon. We wouldn’t blame you for taking a dip in the resort pool to cool off. But if you want to see the monolith in another different light, opt to chopper around it on a scenic helicopter flight. Either way, you’ll have plenty of stories to tell over your Farewell Dinner. Hotel: Outback Hotel & Lodge. Included Meals: Farewell Dinner, Breakfast

Day 11. Farewell from Uluru

Another reason to rise early: to catch the (optional) Field of Light art installation by artist Bruce Munro that blankets the desert floor. Your spirit will glow just as brightly as you bid farewell to this epic Northern Territory tour. Included Meals: Breakfast

Pudakul Aboriginal Cultural Tours

Aboriginal Territorians are the custodians of the world's oldest living culture; they and their families have lived, hunted, held ceremonies and practiced culture on country for over 65,000 years. Aboriginal cultures are a significant draw card for international and domestic visitors to the NT, with people from all over the world coming to immerse themselves in the rich and diverse cultural traditions of Aboriginal Territorians.

With Aboriginal ownership of approximately 50% of land and around 84% of the coastline in the NT, we are uniquely positioned to provide visitors with unique Aboriginal cultural tourism experiences. Research indicates that there is a gap between the market demand for and supply of Aboriginal cultural experiences in the NT, despite market perceptions that the Territory is the foremost provider of Aboriginal cultural tourism in Australia.  Guided by the Aboriginal Tourism Committee and the Northern Territory's Aboriginal Tourism Strategy 2020 - 2030 , Tourism NT is working to support tourism development opportunities for Aboriginal businesses and organisations to create flexible long term development pathways, mentorships and industry partnerships. Respectfully supporting the Aboriginal tourism sector development will deliver sustainable experiences for our visitors and deliver economical, social and cultural benefits for Aboriginal people.

For further information please contact Tourism NT's Director Aboriginal Tourism on [email protected] or 08 8999 7420.

Gaze at ancient rock art and watch the sunset at Ubirr

Gaze at ancient rock art and watch the sunset at Ubirr

What: Kakadu offers front-row seats to some of the most incredible rock art on the planet

Where: Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory

Ubirr is home to two ancient Indigenous rock art galleries that can be explored via an easy one-kilometre loop track. For the best experience, go with an Indigenous guide. We recommend the incredible Victor Cooper, a Bininj man who runs Ayal Aboriginal Tours Kakadu . A former Indigenous ranger in Kakadu, Cooper specialises in translating the significance of the rock art and historic sites at Ubirr. Keep your eyes peeled for etchings of a Tasmanian tiger, the ethereal mimi spirits and a musket from the 1800s. After you’ve had your art fill, clamber up the rocks to find a prime spot to sit and watch the sunset drench the stretching flood plains.
